NAIDOC Week – Cookie Stall

As part of our SCEGGS NAIDOC Week celebrations, the Cape York 2026 Immersion students will be holding two Cookie Stalls as per below:

• Monday 27 July in the Primary Playground (Cash only)
• Tuesday 28 July in the Secondary School (Cash or card)

The cookies are made in Wiradjuri country (Wellington) and are endorsed by Supply Nation.

Two biscuits are in each pack. Each pack is $3.  

Funds raised will directly support the homelands and communities that our girls will work alongside during the Cape York Immersion in September, contributing to community-led projects that provide lasting benefits for local families.

Welcome back to school, to Term 3 and to the second half of the year. I hope you all had a good break from the rigours of school life. I was speaking to the staff this week about the need for “rest” in our lives. Not just the sitting on the couch doing nothing type of rest but being able to switch off from certain responsibilities or roles that we might have, even if its momentarily. A place where you can be yourself without any expectation or agenda. I hope that our community, as busy as it can be, can be a refuge of rest for those who belong to it.

Community Initiatives

 Thanks to all those people that have signed up for our Monday Food Delivery Program. If you don’t know what I am taking about or would still like to sign up please click here to get more information. There are still quite a few spots available for the rest of this term and you can volunteer as little or as many times as you like.

I was able to deliver all of the trackies, hoodies and blankies during the holidays and they were all delightfully received by a wide range of welfare agencies. We often have the opportunity to give out these items personally to people in our local area, sleeping rough and doing it tough. Our annual socks and undies drive will be coming up later in the term if you would like to start preparing for that.

Pre 2020, before Covid, we had a program where I would take out a small group of Secondary School students during the school day just before recess to hand out home made baked goods and other food to a neighbouring community centre in Woolloomooloo and those living on the streets. It was very popular with both students and clientele but unfortunately had to stop because of the obvious restrictions. I have decided to resurrect the program and would like to start it up again this term. It is on a volunteer basis and students will need to sign up using a specified link. I am planning to go out at least three or four times a term. I will be speaking to students about this initiative in chapel next week. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Last term I was asked by a parent and SCEGGS Board Director, Ian Narev, if he could interview me on this podcast!! I was surprised by my own reaction as I started to get a bit nervous. Worrying about what I was going to be asked, how would I come across, have I got anything interesting to say. It was a good insight into what its like to be on “the other side”. If you are interested, it’s basically about me: my history, how I came to be doing what I do and the stuff that drives me. And of course, more of those stories which you may or may not have heard before. I hope it’s not too self-indulgent but it was good to stop and think about my life for a moment.  I hope you enjoy our conversation.

Bourke Street Car Line – Working Together for a Safe Dismissal in the Primary School

As we move through the first few weeks of Term 3, afternoon routines begin to take shape for families, students and staff alike. The Bourke Street Car Line is a key part of our dismissal process and, when used as intended, allows pick-up to run smoothly, safely and efficiently for everyone.

With a shared understanding of expectations, and a little patience, we can establish positive routines early and ensure the Car Line remains a safe environment for students, staff and families each afternoon.

What helps the Car Line run well?

For a safe and efficient dismissal, we ask families to please note the following:

Pick-up times are staggered to support traffic flow:

Year 6 pick-up arrangements

To assist with traffic flow, Year 6 students are asked to be collected from Forbes Street where possible. This approach helps reduce congestion and supports a more efficient dismissal for all families.
Families are welcome to continue using Bourke Street if a Year 6 student has a younger sibling being collected from the Primary School.

• Remain in your vehicle at all times. Staff on duty will assist your daughter to her car and ensure a safe departure.
• Join the queue correctly from the northern end of Bourke Street. Double parking or cutting in on the Car Line is not permitted and causes significant disruption and creates safety concerns.
• Move forward in the queue as space becomes available. Keeping gaps to a minimum helps traffic move steadily.
• Display your daughter’s name sign clearly. If you need a replacement, please contact the Primary Office  
• Follow staff directions. Teachers on duty have a clear view of the overall flow and are best placed to guide vehicles safely.
• Encourage students to enter vehicles promptly. Students should enter from the kerb side with bags placed on the seat rather than in the boot.
• Minimise distractions. Avoid phone calls during Car Line time so your full attention remains on safety.
• Use the pedestrian crossing. Families arriving or leaving on foot are asked to use the Bourke Street pedestrian crossing. For safety reasons, please do not cross between vehicles.

We all share a responsibility in keeping dismissal arrangements efficient. A calm and consistent approach from families makes a significant difference. By following these expectations, we help maintain a safe environment for students, staff and the wider community.

If you have feedback or suggestions, we welcome your input as we continue to refine these arrangements together.

SCEGGS P&F Primary ‘Magical Carnival’ Disco – Save the Date!

• Kindergarten to Year 3 from 3.30pm to 5.00pm

Year 10 Market Day

On the final Monday of Term 2,  Year 10 Commerce students participated in the annual SCEGGS Market Day event.

Market Day requires students to create their own small business and ultimately produce products and services that are sold to the SCEGGS school community. Students are responsible for developing business ideas, sourcing materials, marketing and promoting their products, and managing sales throughout the day. It provides students with the opportunity to apply the theory they have learned about running a business during class in a tangible and practical way.

This year’s theme, “Colours of the Rainbow”, challenged students to incorporate either a single colour or a range of colours into their products, branding and marketing materials. The result was a wide range of businesses and a colourful marketplace enjoyed by students and staff. Stalls ranged from ‘Mama’s Mac’ mac & cheese and ‘Nachobell’ nachos, to a variety of sweet treats, drinks and handmade bracelets.

Market Day also serves a broader purpose by supporting a charitable cause. Profits from the event will be donated to Let’s Build a School, a charity that has been improving access to education in a rural Cambodian school since 2013. Let’s Build a School supports a range of school-based programs that enhance opportunities for primary school students. Funds raised from last year’s Market Day contributed to the creation of a new school vegetable garden, the employment of a new English teacher, and provided funding for Khmer cultural classes and a sports program. This year, students generated more than $5,000 in revenue, with proceeds going towards supporting the ongoing work of Let’s Build a School.

Congratulations to all Year 10 Commerce students on their hard work and contributions to an incredibly successful day. A special thank you to everyone in the SCEGGS community who supported the event, including the SCEGGS maintenance and catering teams.

Visual Arts

Inaugural SCEGGS Landscape Prize

A reminder to all students who are participating in the Inaugural SCEGGS Landscape Prize that paintings are due next Monday by 9.00 am.

The Official Opening will be on Wednesday, 29 July with speeches commencing at 5.00 pm in the Auditorium.

The exhibition will be judged and opened by Tom Carment, who is a highly regarded contemporary painter.

Tom’s portraits have been selected for the Archibald Prize 12 times, and his landscapes for the Wynne Prize eight times and for the Sulman prize four times. His works are held by the Art Gallery of NSW, City of Melbourne Art & Heritage Collection, NSW State Parliament, State Library of NSW, Kedumba Drawing Collection, Macquarie Group Collection and many other private and regional collections.

Tom was the winner of the 2014 NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize, the 2008 Gallipoli Art Prize and the 2005 Mosman Art Prize. Over one hundred of Tom’s works were shown at the 2014 Dobell Australian Drawing Biennial at the Art Gallery of NSW. In 2008 the Hawkesbury Regional Gallery held a survey of his work entitled, People, Paddocks, Coastlines.

At the Opening, Tom will announce the three category winners for Primary, Junior (Years 7 to 9) and Senior (Years 10 to 12) as well as three highly commended works for each of these age sections.

Refreshments will be served and all in the community are warmly invited.

Select paintings will be for sale with proceeds going to the Let’s Build a School Foundation which is committed to social and economic justice through supporting and improving access to education in rural Cambodia. EFTPOS facilities will be available at the Opening.

The exhibition will be open: Wednesday 29 July  8.00 am to 3.00 and Thursday 30 July  8.00am to 1.45pm.

Hockey

Congratulations to Jess Weatherall (Year 12) who has been selected in the Australian U18 Indoor Hockey Team to compete in the Pro Series Indoor, South Africa in December. In the July holidays Jess also represented NSW at the Australian U’18 Hockey Championships that were held in Darwin. NSW placed 4^th overall after an exciting playoff against ACT which went to penalty shoot outs.

Congratulations to Maddison Soulos and Romy Schmidt (Year 9) who represented Sydney East Hockey Association (SEHA) at the U16 Girls State Championships. Maddison’s team placed 5^th in Division 1 after a close game to eliminate them from making the semi-final. Romy’s team had mixed results but it was a great experience to further the team’s development.

Cross Country

Congratulations to Beatrice Emanuel (Year 7), Annabelle Jessup (Year 10), Lily Cooney (Year 12) & Matilda Emanuel (Year 12) who all competed at the NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships that were all held at the International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park.

Our athletes performed exceptionally well, and we are so proud of these wonderful results:

• 13 Years – Beatrice Emanuel placed 17^th
• 16 Years – Annabelle Jessup placed 4^th
• 18 Years – Matilda Emanuel placed 5^th, Lily Cooney placed 10^th

Sydney Regional Snowsports Championships 

The final week of the school holidays was filled with excitement on the slopes as 57 students from Years 2–11 represented SCEGGS across a fantastic week of Snowsports racing. 

The week kicked off with the Redlands Cup in Thredbo, and despite the conditions, students were thrilled to compete in their first races of the season with the Division 1 & 3 teams both earning podium finishes. Alyssa Rayment (Year 9) won the individual Bronze Medal in Division 1.

The action then moved to Perisher for the Sydney Regional Championships with the week beginning in some slightly unfavourable weather, however thankfully brought plenty of snow! As the skies cleared, competitors were rewarded with bluebird days and great skiing and snowboarding conditions. 

The Scots Cup, where racing had converted into an exciting afternoon and evening event, brought more success with students once again producing outstanding performances with a Gold Medal to Cleo Harrington (Year 10) and a Silver Medal to Amelia Pellegrino (Year 10).

Throughout the week of Interschools racing, many students achieved personal best performances, while others celebrated medal-winning results in individual and/or team events. Most importantly, every student demonstrated resilience and determination tackling each course with confidence and embracing every challenge with a positive attitude… and a smile! 

Mrs Dempsey, Miss Vaughan-Johncey and I had a fantastic week supporting students while also undertaking race duties. We observed school spirit, sportswomanship, and most importantly JOY during the competition, with students supporting each other on and off the mountain and having fun at each event. 

A special thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to assist with race duties. Your support helped make another successful and memorable Snowsports event possible. 

Congratulations to all 57 students for representing SCEGGS with enthusiasm, courage and pride. We look forward to another exciting season on the slopes and invite more SCEGGS students to join next year! Good luck to those students who will progress through to the NSW State Interschools Championships in August.

Futsal

In June we took a talented group of Year 7, 8 and 9 students to compete in the Futsal NSW Schools Competition that was held at Bankstown Basketball Stadium: Macy Barnett, Juliet Brook, Klemintine Chylek, Audrey Cunningham, Isabel Dermody, Christina Gouveros and Daisy Grice.

The team started the day strongly with an impressive 5–0 win over Blakehurst High School, with goals from Macy Barnett (3), Christina Gouverous and Audrey Cunningham. Their momentum continued into the next match securing a 2–0 victory against Picnic Point High School, thanks to goals from Christina Gouverous and Audrey Cunningham.

The girls then faced a tough challenge in their third game against St Scholastica’s going down 0–4 in a hard-fought match. In the semi-final, they showed outstanding resilience and determination narrowly losing 2–3 to Al Zahra College, with Macy Barnett scoring both goals.

Overall, it was an excellent effort from the team. The competition provided a valuable opportunity to play schools outside of the IGSA pathway, and the girls demonstrated impressive teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day.

K-6 Athletics Carnival 2026

The K-6 Athletics Carnival took place at the end of Term 2 and what an excellent day it was. There were many outstanding performances across both track and field events. The spirit and energy amongst K-2 students were fantastic as the girls threw themselves whole-heartedly into their respective events. It was wonderful to see all Years 3 to 6 competitors trying their hardest and supporting each other throughout the day, and most importantly, enjoying the experience. Congratulations to Barton who were once again the winning House. A big thank you to all the staff and coaches for their efforts and making the experience such as positive one for all the students.

Student Achievements

Georgina Sharp (Year 6) represented SCEGGS at the Equestrian NSW State Interschools Championships in the school holidays. The competition had over 450 riders from primary and high schools from all over the state and ran for five days. She had a very successful few days and qualified to represent NSW at the Australian National Interschools Championships to be held in Victoria in September.

Georgina achieved the following results:

• Reserve Champion overall primary novice dressage with a second in both the novice 2.2 and 2.3
• 3rd place overall primary show horse with a 1st in the show horse and two 4^th places in the rider and handler
• 4th overall primary preliminary dressage with a 2nd in preliminary 1.2.

She had a great time representing SCEGGS. Congratulations to Georgina for the excellent results.

During the break, Lark Xiao (Year 4) participated in the SMNE regional meet. She competed in six events and won a medal in each one. Lark took gold in the 100m Individual Medley, 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, and 50m Butterfly events. She placed third in the 50m Backstroke and 50m Breaststroke. Congratulations to Lark for her efforts!
