Class Parents 2027

Class Parents 2027

Are you looking for a great way to be involved in your daughter’s year group, connect with other parents and bring your cohort together? Volunteering as a Class Parent offers you this and much more!

Although 2026 is not quite over yet, the P&F are excited to have started planning for a range of wonderful events for next year to bring the parent community together. To do this we need your help!

Class Parents are an important part of the School community and act as a liaison between parents, the P&F Association, the Trust and the School. They create and organise opportunities for their Year Group to meet and get to know each other and provide invaluable assistance to the P&F.

We generally find four Class Parents per year is about right, but there are always more in some years, and we always do accept more for Year 12 and for Year 6, as both year groups have graduation events towards the end of the year.

From the Chaplain

From the Chaplain

This week in Chapel we are thinking about the environment of giving and receiving that many of us participate in during the Christmas season and what messages a gift can bring. I am also presenting to the students some other options of being able to give to those in need where the gifts we provide will make a big difference in someone else’s life. Here are a few examples:

“Mr Lee-Lindsay needs NEW Socks and Undies”

For those new to our community I would like to introduce you to our annual socks and undies drive. There are a number of welfare organisations that are always asking for NEW socks and undies for their clientele. This is a serious issue amongst the homeless in terms of hygiene and good foot care. It is a whole school activity and we would love to receive a variety of sizes for boys and girls, men and women. There is a basket outside the Chapel where all donations can be delivered. I will be taking the items to various locations in the last week of this school term.

Christmas Gift Collection

As part of our annual school Christmas service, we ask each student to contribute towards a gift for either a boy or a girl, wrapped in cellophane, to donate to Vinnie’s Community Centre in Redfern. These gifts will be distributed to children that may not otherwise receive anything at Christmas due to poverty or other family issues. The demand continues to grow as many families face financial pressure and housing stress during these unsettling times. Feedback we receive each year indicates that these gifts make a huge difference to children throughout our city, giving them the message that they are loved and cared for.

We will be accepting those gifts up until Friday 27 November. More information will be delivered to students via their Form or class teachers.

We have also been approached by some local agencies that would like help to create Christmas hampers to give to their clientele. Lou’s Place in Redfern and the Drug and Alcohol Service at St Vincents Hospital are seeking donations of toiletries and other Christmas items to give to their clientele to provide some joy this Christmas. I am still working out the finer details but will give an update next week once we have everything in place.

TEAR Australia Useful Gift Catalogue

Thinking further afield, this gift catalogue provides for someone overseas in great need of things such as clean water, an education, food resources etc. It is a gift that you can give to someone you know but also to a stranger in need. Students have the opportunity to pick up a brochure but you can also have a look at it here.

As many of us enter into this spirit of giving, why not consider those gifts that will certainly make an impact.

Cambodia International Immersion 2027 Information Evening

Cambodia International Immersion 2027 Information Evening

Date: Wednesday 28 October
Time: 6.00pm – 7.00pm
Location: Lecture Theatre
Parking: will be available in the Joan Freeman Car Park

SCEGGS has a proud tradition of offering immersion experiences that encourage students to develop a deeper understanding of service, global citizenship and social justice. Recent immersions have included work with remote Indigenous communities on the Cape York Peninsula and community partnerships in Cambodia.

We are pleased to invite students currently in Year 9 and Year 10, together with their families, to attend an information evening about a proposed Cambodia International Immersion during the October 2027 school holidays.

Working in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, SCEGGS students and staff will contribute to the construction of homes for families in the Siem Reap region of Cambodia. This unique service-learning experience will provide students in Years 10 and 11 in 2027 with the opportunity to make a tangible difference while developing teamwork, resilience, cultural understanding and leadership skills.

The information evening will provide details about:

  • the purpose and goals of the immersion
  • the partnership with Habitat for Humanity
  • trip activities and student involvement
  • accommodation, supervision and safety
  • expected costs and fundraising opportunities
  • the application and selection process

Any student interested in applying for the Cambodia International Immersion is encouraged to attend with a parent or caregiver.

We look forward to sharing more about this exciting opportunity and answering any questions you may have.

Year 11 Roughtober Sleepout and Urban Walk

Year 11 Roughtober Sleepout and Urban Walk

As in previous years, many Year 11 students have signed up to participate in the Youth Roughtober Sleepout, on Friday, 30 October.

This is an awareness and fundraising event for Rough Edges, a drop-in café for people who are living in vulnerable and at-risk situations to have a place where they can belong, receive food, and develop a sense of community with other people each night. The funds will also go some way to helping the Banksia program which is a support service for women experiencing domestic violence.

As a school with a Christian foundation, we are guided by the example of Jesus to love our neighbours. When we think about what Jesus meant by love, and how he showed this, we see that he began by noticing people in need, and those suffering, lonely or forgotten by society. Not only did he notice, but he also reached out and by doing so, was the presence of a loving God to those people.

Rough Edges relies very much on fundraising efforts to sustain its vital services here in Darlinghurst. Click here to read how this service helps people rebuild their lives and treats patrons with dignity through the care shown by those serving and volunteering at the café.

We hope that you will help support our Year 11s who are sleeping rough by donating to our SCEGGS Darlinghurst Roughtober fundraiser. Click here to donate.

We thank you for your generosity and support of this important service. I am very proud of the students who have embraced this initiative so enthusiastically and have shown great commitment to giving back to our local community.

Abang Book Launch

Abang Book Launch

On Monday, 19 October, the Social Justice group, many Year 11 students and staff, attended the launch of Buckets of Hope, the debut book from Abang Othow. Addressing her first student audience, Abang spoke about the process of writing, why she wrote the book, and read extracts from her hybrid-memoir. As Abang read, there was a  universal feeling that we were listening to a story that has been many years in the making and one that we felt so honoured to hear.

Over the past few years, Abang has presented to Year 10 students about her story of survival. As well as now being an author, Abang is also an educator, mother, model and human rights activist. She has appeared on SBS and ABC as well as featured in many articles in outlets such as the Financial Review. In her capacity as a refugee advocate and through the work of UNHCR, Abang hopes to share her story of hope through adversity with others facing the trauma of displacement and war. “I am using my voice to spread the message of hope,” she says. “Hope can be held, shaped and carried, one bucket at a time.”  To discover more of Abang’s story, click here.

Thank you to all who attended, who purchased her signed book and for all the spirit of compassion and curiosity that you brought to this event.

Year 9 Religious Education Excursion

Year 9 Religious Education Excursion

Recently, Year 9 embarked on an excursion to Chabad of Bondi as part of their Religious Education studies. Here Reina Steiner Carrion, shares her reflections of the experience.

Year 9 had the opportunity to visit Chabad of Bondi to learn about Judaism and take part in Project NOAH. During the excursion, we explored Jewish traditions and culture, including the significance of challah, a traditional braided bread eaten on Shabbat and Jewish holidays.

One of the highlights was baking our own challah. It was a fun, hands-on way to learn about an important part of Jewish tradition and understand how food can bring people together. We also had the opportunity to learn more about Judaism, its customs and the values that are important within the Jewish community.

Overall, it was a really interesting and enjoyable experience. It gave us the opportunity to learn about a culture and religion beyond the classroom and develop a greater understanding of the traditions that are meaningful to others. Many thanks to everyone involved in organising the excursion and welcoming us!

Gateway8 Academic Competition

Gateway8 Academic Competition

At the end of last term, 16 Year 5 and Year 6 students represented SCEGGS at the Gateway8 Competition, an interschool academic challenge hosted annually by Macarthur Anglican School. Bringing together students from independent schools across Sydney, Gateway8 provides an exciting enrichment opportunity designed to extend students beyond their everyday classroom learning through challenging, collaborative and creative problem solving.

Working in two teams of eight, the Year 5 team consisted of Millie Wilson, Olive Manton, Bronte Lusted, Ines Allen, Emily Yeung, Mabel Smith, Jasmine Loa and Tove Klettenberg. The Year 6 team consisted of Kaylee Wang, Defne Aslan, Ava Grange, Ivy Zhang, Madeleine Chirakis, Alice Chandler, Eva Lobato Williams and Georgina Sharp.

Throughout the day, the girls completed six different challenges drawing on areas including English, Science, Music, Humanities, Mathematics, Creative Arts and Design. The challenges draw upon Howard Gardner’s eight multiple intelligences and required students to think flexibly, take intellectual risks and apply their knowledge and skills in new and unfamiliar contexts.

This year’s theme was Sustainability, inspired by the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The girls were challenged to extend their thinking beyond traditional subject boundaries and consider complex, real-world issues from different perspectives. With limited time to complete each challenge, they needed to collaborate effectively, communicate their ideas, manage their time, solve problems and think both critically and creatively. They also needed to draw upon the different strengths of their team members as they grappled with tasks for which there was not always an obvious or immediate solution.

Both teams performed admirably on the day, with the Year 6 team achieving some outstanding results. They placed first in English and Music, second in Science and Mathematics, and third in Creative Arts and Design. These results saw the team finish second overall in the competition. An impressive achievement!

Gateway8 was a wonderful opportunity for our girls to be extended academically, work alongside like-minded peers and experience the challenge and enjoyment that comes from applying their learning in new and meaningful ways. We congratulate all 16 girls on their enthusiasm, teamwork and persistence.

Stage 1 Oracy Showcase

Stage 1 Oracy Showcase

The Power of Poetry – The Stage 1 Oracy Showcase

In the Primary School, we recognise that oral language is about so much more than sharing news or delivering a prepared speech. It is about creating rich, engaging opportunities for the girls to communicate, express ideas and build confidence.

Last term, our Stage 1 girls explored the art of poetry recitation, discovering how voice, volume, rhythm and expression can bring words to life. Through practising and performing their chosen poems, they strengthened their language skills while developing fluency and confidence as readers and speakers.

Our Finalists in the Stage 1 Oracy Showcase, held this week in The Playhouse, are a wonderful example of this growth in action. They delivered their poetry performances with confidence, expression and clarity, showing great courage in presenting to a large audience. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and love seeing their confidence and performances grow. A special mention must also be given to kindergarten who recited My Shadow by Robert Lewis Stenvenson to kick start the event. These early experiences lay the foundations for the wonderful oracy performances that we see as the girls progress through the primary years.

It certainly was a wonderful culmination of all three Oracy Showcases held this year, and I think I can confidently declare this to be the best Stage 1 Oracy Showcase yet!

Congratulations to our finalists:

Secondary Sport

Secondary Sport

In Secondary School sports news this week read about:

Volleyball

Last weekend  Volleyball was introduced into the SCEGGS sporting program. Two Volleyball teams entered into the popular Santa Sabina Invitational competition this term.

The Year 7 team had success first up with a close win against Danebank (2 sets – 1).

The combined Year 8/9 team lost a closely fought match against Rosebank College (2-1). One set went to a tie break (26-24) and SCEGGS comprehensively won the third set as they eased their way into the match.

The players have been training regularly at lunch times throughout 2026 in preparation for the competition. We are excited to see the development and growth of Volleyball at SCEGGS in future years. In 2027, Volleyball will be offered across Years 7-12 in both Terms 1 & 4, with plans also under way to enter teams into the NSW Schools Volleyball Cup events.

If you would like to try volleyball, we will have an additional net and court set up in the Sports Hall at lunch each Monday this term.

Tennis

The IGSA Tennis competition got off to a strong start last weekend.

AFL

Well done to Alice Beaumont (Year 7) who represented the Sydney Swans Academy in the 2026 Super 24 Series in Albury during the October school holidays. The U13 Sydney Swans had two strong wins against the GWS Giants girls, and Alice really enjoyed the challenge of competing at this high-level.

Emily Snow (Year 7) was also selected to play but sadly had to withdraw due to injury.

Alice Beaumont, Emily Snow and Klemintine Chylek (Year 7) have all been selected to train with the Swans Academy in 2027.

Around the Grounds

The Year 3 Football, IPSHA Basketball and IPSHA Tennis competitions commenced last Saturday, marking a positive start to the term across all sports.

In IPSHA Basketball, all Year 6 teams competed at SCEGGS. It was wonderful to see the teams encouraging and supporting each another throughout the morning, while demonstrating resilience and perseverance against strong opposition. The SCEGGS 1 team got off to a strong start with an impressive performance against MLC. Isabelle Lee had a fantastic game, demonstrating excellent ball control and accuracy in her shooting. SCEGGS 2 faced Meriden, while SCEGGS 3 took on Kincoppal. Both teams showed plenty of promise, with positive examples of teamwork and effective ball movement. Despite their efforts, however, they were unable to contain their opponents’ attacks. At training, all Year 6 teams worked on developing their defensive tactics in preparation for their upcoming games.

A reminder that no Year 6 teams are scheduled to play on Saturday 24th October due to the Year 7 2027 Allwell testing.

Good luck to all the teams competing this weekend. We look forward to another great round of sport!
