From Ms Allum

From Ms Allum

On the eve of our Term 2 holidays, I am sure you are all looking forward to what will hopefully be a few weeks of rejuvenation. Although a short term, there have been many occasions where the SCEGGS spirit has come to fore, from our Drama productions, Music concerts, Sport Carnivals, National Reconciliation Week celebrations, P&F gatherings and of course, the rich learning opportunities in the classroom and beyond.

Many of you would have seen that the redevelopment of Wilkinson House is progressing! Australian-owned firm Grindley Constructions has taken possession of the building. Pre-construction activities, including establishing the site compound and construction zone and installing the hoardings/gantries are well underway, and the crane is currently being installed. Initial work will ensure the protection and retention of the façade as well as the foyer (the Forbes Street entry). Following this, the builders will remove the roof to allow for the demolition to occur from top to bottom, with the four walls being further fortified. Further excavation to accommodate the bottom floor and connection to the Sports Hall will take place and the builders will then build the new internal structure from the bottom to the top. While it is still very early days, we are hopeful that our school and community will be able to enjoy the benefits of a revitalised Wilkinson House by the beginning of 2025. I take this opportunity to thank you all for your patience and support as we work together to bring our girls the best learning spaces possible.

During the break, our school will turn 128 years young (on 17 July) and we will mark this occasion with our annual Foundation Day Assembly on the first day of term.  Until then, Happy Holidays!

Best wishes

SchoolTV Special Report: Mobile Phone Separation Anxiety

SchoolTV Special Report: Mobile Phone Separation Anxiety

The use of mobile phones and technology in schools has been a highly debated topic internationally, including in Australia. Almost all states and territories in Australia, have implemented full bans on mobile phones during class, recess, and lunch times, while allowing students to carry their phones during travel to and from school. In NSW public secondary schools, students will be banned from using mobile phones at school from Term 4 2023.”. At SCEGGS, the school rule around mobile phones, as stated in the school diary, is: “Each student must only use her mobile phone during the school day for educational purposes after seeking consent from a member of staff and be familiar with the behaviour expectations surrounding phone use.”

Even in our context where this school rule is respected and our students meet this expectation, there is nonetheless a rising concern about the addictive nature of mobile phones and the ensuing consequences outside of the school day. For parents and carers concerned about mobile phone separation anxiety in their children, it is important to acknowledge it as a real issue and discuss the negative effects of phone addiction, such as sleep problems and mental health issues. Gradually introducing phone-free periods at home, setting clear expectations and boundaries, and modelling healthy behaviours can help your child cope. It is also crucial to establish a support network and seek professional help if needed. Supporting the school rules about mobile phones allows for better focus on teaching and learning, minimising distractions, and interruptions.

This Special Report will help address mobile phone separation anxiety and provide guidance on supporting your child’s wellbeing. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Creative Writing Opportunities

Creative Writing Opportunities

During the assessment period this term I was fortunate enough to be able to see a number of incredible creative and persuasive presentations: interrogations of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet by Year 9, reflections on their favourite novels from Year 7 and creative poems and presentations from Year 8. Reading creative work from Year 10 and students in a number of our Senior courses, the English Department and I have often been impressed by the initiative and talents of so many of our students.

We are always keen to encourage our students to submit their work into external competitions, and I know that many teachers have been sharing information with their classes about some of the upcoming opportunities. As we move towards the holidays, we wanted to share some of the links below as we know there are many keen writers who may want to work on pieces over their break. Many of these websites also have incredible resources for passionate poems and writers. The English Department wishes everyone all the best for the Winter – what a wonderful time to read a book and get back to writing for pleasure!

The Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers is open to secondary school students across Australia. Students are invited to submit Fiction, Creative Nonfiction or Poetry pieces. This competition offers exciting opportunities for winners to be a part of workshops in Melbourne. Entries for this competition are due on Friday 4 August. More information can be found here.

The Dorothea Mackellar Writing Competition is one of Australia’s most prestigious poetry awards for young people. This year’s theme is “A Winding Road.” Year 8 students who completed poems in Term 2 may be particularly interested in submitting their poems. The school has registered an account for this competition and your daughter will be able to check with her teacher about entering before the due date on Friday 30 June. More information can be found here.

Red Room’s Poetry Forest Competition encourages students to compose poems which have a positive message on climate change. This competition is open until Friday 22 September. More information can be found here.

The Insight Writing Competition is open to students in Years 7 – 12. Students are invited to compose creative pieces of up to 1,400 words. The theme for this year is “Promise.” This competition is open until Friday 1 September. More information can be found here.

 Primary and Secondary Piano Concert

Congratulations to the 50 primary and secondary students who performed over the two piano concerts that were held last Thursday 15 June in the Great Hall.  It was a wonderful afternoon featuring a range of piano pieces and it was great to see students sharing their music at their various stages of learning.  Many thanks to our SCEGGS piano tutors Lisa Adamik, Natalia Deasy, Catherine Lie, Chloe Waldron Reilly and external piano teachers for preparing their students for the performance.  Special thanks to Ms Heidi Jones for organising the concerts as performance opportunities for our piano students.

Sunday Funday Primary String Workshops

From 10.00am until 3.00pm last Sunday, the halls were alive with the sound of music in the Primary School, with 65 string players rehearsing repertoire for the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival! Our talented primary violinists, violists, cellists and double bass players worked hard in tutorials with string tutors Ms Jedda Thorley, Mr Adrian Bendt, Ms Amelia McCluney and Mr Oliver Simpson to perfect their three ASBOF pieces required for each ensemble. Congratulations to all the girls involved, we look forward to the ASBOF performances at the end of Week 3 next term. Musgrove Opera: Sid the Serpent Performance

All girls in the Primary school attended the Musgrove Opera performance on Tuesday 13 June. The five performers were young, vibrant and gave a fun-filled and entertaining performance to a very appreciative audience.

As a slithering snake in a circus, all Sid the Serpent wanted to do was to sing. However, no-one liked his singing! This problem was resolved when his circus friends told him that we can all be our best when we are ourselves, even if that is different to others. It was a beautifully presented message.

AFL Paul Kelly Cup

Last Wednesday, 16 girls took to the field for the Paul Kelly Cup, the largest Primary Schools Competition in NSW and ACT. With a largely new team playing the game for the first time, it was fantastic to see the progress made throughout the day.

The Year 5/6 played five games throughout the day, winning one and losing four. It was a great experience, providing extra preparation for IPSHA AFL next term.

With such a fun day had by all, the girls are already gearing up, ready for next year!

Saturday Sports

Well done to all of our teams across Year 3 Netball, IPSHA Netball and IPSHA Minkey/Hockey for an amazing term.

Thanks to all the coaches and sports staff for their ongoing hard work and dedication to helping girls improve their skills and enjoy themselves at all weekly sessions and Saturday games in Term 2.

Term 3 Saturday Sports Trials

Thanks to all the girls involved in Tuesday’s trials for IPSHA AFL, Touch Football, and Year 3 Minkey Hockey. It was beautiful to see such excellent attendance in the afternoon. A big thanks to our coaches and PE staff for the afternoon.

A reminder that there is a final training session for Term 3 sports on Tuesday 18 July (the last day of the school holidays). This training session is open for those who can make the session. Selections will not be affected due to not attending this day.

In preparation for Term 3 Sports, please remember that while some selections may not always be the desired outcome, parents should challenge their daughters to work hard and develop skills throughout the year, regardless of whether they agree with the team selection. Encouraging a positive attitude and a focus on improvement can lead to a successful and enjoyable sports experience for all involved.

As always, please contact Tom Mitton if you have any questions regarding team selections.

Holiday Tennis Clinic

SCEGGS Exclusive Tennis Coaches, Justin and Vince, are hosting a SCEGGS JUNIOR SCHOOL ONLY tennis program this upcoming school holidays.

Note that this tennis program is also on the same day as IPSHA AFL, Touch Football and Minkey training sessions. Any students wishing to attend both in the day will be given the opportunity. Girls can be walked from the trials to the tennis courts if arranged beforehand with Tom Mitton. Alternatively, parents can collect from the training session and dropped at the tennis courts afterwards.

All standards are welcome and programmed for; Beginners, Intermediate and Frequent Players.

Justin and Vince are the long-time and current SCEGGS Tildesely Tennis Team coaches, PE tennis classes for SCEGGS junior school.

Student achievements: NSW Cross Country Championships

Congratulations to Beatrice Emanuel, who competed at the NSW Cross Country Championships at Tapitallee Cross Country Course on Saturday. She finished 2nd in her age group on a challenging course. A fantastic achievement Beatrice!

Primary Sport Achievements

Does your daughter compete in any sport outside of school (for example, at a representative level or a sport we do not currently offer)? If so, we would love to celebrate their achievements by recognising them in this newsletter!

Please email Tom Mitton any information (and photos, if possible) These will be included in newsletters throughout the year.

Wishing you all a wonderful holiday break. We look forward to doing it all again next term!

Visual Arts

Visual Arts

This weekend you are warmly invited to join the SCEGGS Visual Arts Department for an exhibition of new works by Heidi Jackson, Head of Visual of Arts, Anita Tesoriero, Visual Arts Teacher and Katrina Collins (Former Head of Visual Arts).

Katrina, Heidi and Anita share an extensive exhibition and professional history spanning over two decades. All three artists are painters, primarily responding to colour, light and form, illustrated in the painterly vibrancy of Katrina’s abstract compositions, Heidi’s subjective representation of the landscape and Anita’s lively, expressive figurative work.

Katrina Collins’ paintings celebrate colour and pattern, creating vivid systems of line, space and form that reiterate her dedication to the most essential aspects of abstraction.

In this new series Heidi Jackson’s works have become depictions of an illusory infrastructure that both underlies and overlays the landscape. Canopies of trees, stippling like rain, the blurring of fence lines into shelter belts, the sense of being underwater as above ground transgress the boundary between memory, reality and the imagination.

As an artist, Anita Tesoriero finds herself drawn to the vibrant energy and joy that people experience on a sunny day at Wylie’s baths, a picturesque tidal pool in Sydney. Her series of paintings aim to capture the essence of these moments, to convey the sense of relaxation and freedom that comes with immersing oneself in the cool, refreshing water on a hot day.

Please join us for Opening Drinks on Saturday 24 June, 1pm – 5pm.

The Exhibition will be held at The Shop Gallery: 112 Glebe Point Road, Glebe Exhibition Opening Hours: Friday 23, Saturday 24, Sunday 25 June, 11am – 5pm.

Preview the works here:

Happy Holidays from all of the Visual Arts Department! It’s been a highly productive and rewarding semester.

History Debating

History Debating

Last week the Year 10 History Debating team, joined by the Year 9 team for their inaugural year in the History Debating Competition, competed in their respective pool rounds of the J.A. Thompson History Debating Competition. Our Year 9 team was hosted by Emanuel School on Tuesday and debated two Emanuel teams arguing the negative on the topics That Australian involvement in the Vietnam War was justified and That violence was a necessary method in order to progress Civil Rights in the USA. In two tightly contested debates, the SCEGGS team had one win and one loss. Friday was the turn of our Year 10 team who hosted De La Salle Caringbah and Emanuel School, debating the affirmative case That the United Nations was established as a toothless tiger in 1945, and the negative case That the Allies won WWII at Stalingrad. In two interesting and close debates, the Year 10 team also had one win and one loss. Congratulations to all students who researched and constructed thoughtful and compelling cases and who engaged so well with the process of historical inquiry and debate. We wish them well for future debates.

Cook4Good – Kids Giving Back

At SCEGGS, our goal is to empower the girls to become kind and socially mindful community members. One of the ways we achieve this is through the guidance of Mr Lee-Lindsay, who shares his experiences of active service during Chapel and sheds light on the challenges and inequalities faced by people in our local area. He also encourages the girls to contribute actively by donating items needed by those he seeks to support.

In line with this spirit of service inspired by Mr Lee-Lindsay, the Year 5 girls recently participated in a program called Cook4Good, organised by Kids Giving Back. This program aims to foster a culture of learning whilst instilling values of compassion and service in the participants. During the experience, the girls had the opportunity to learn about homelessness in Australia and were particularly moved by the story of their team leader, who had personally experienced homelessness. Motivated by this newfound understanding, the girls then enthusiastically cooked a total of 206 nutritious meals and assembled breakfast boxes for those experiencing homelessness and food scarcity.

Through this hands-on experience, the girls not only developed practical cooking skills but also gained a deeper appreciation for the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness and the importance of action in making a difference. Some of the students share the reflections below.

Year 5 Reflections

“We learned from today’s experience that kindness and effort are the two most important qualities of life.”

“I learnt from today’s experience that the people who sleep on the streets (sleep rough) make up only 9% of the homeless population. The other 93% of homeless people are finding refuge with other people by couch surfing, they might live in cars and sometimes even rubbish bins that have lids on them so that they can keep warm. Another thing that I learnt was that there are about 44,000 children under the age of 10 who are homeless and there are over 200,000 people who are homeless in Australia.”

“After this amazing experience I am much more grateful to have a warm and safe home, fresh food on the table every day and my wonderful pets.”

“I have learnt from today’s experience that you should always be generous and kind because some people might be going through tough times and even small acts of kindness can really make a big difference.”

Philosophy Club

SCEGGS Team Wins Gold at the Ethics Olympiad

On Tuesday 2 May, five members of the SCEGGS Philosophy Club competed in the Ethics Olympiad. This round, which included teams from 30 schools, was the Senior division of the ACT/NSW region of the international competition. The team took home the gold medal, and are now preparing for the International Ethics Olympiad! They will be thinking away with teams from countries including Canada, Singapore and India.

The format of the Olympiad is similar to debating, but the emphasis is on raising relevant ethical questions, rather than winning the argument. In fact, it is common for teams to agree in general terms but to take different philosophical pathways.

The SCEGGS team members were Leyla Bensan, Zoe Lindner, Sophia Papadakis, Bella Talib, and Chiara Weaver. They discussed eight cases including “Bullfighting: Art or Not?”, “National Service” and “Anger in Politics”. During a discussion of “Lookism and Free Cosmetic Surgery” the SCEGGS philosophers discussed ideas around what would actually solve the issue of lookism permanently, instead of conceding to it via surgery, but also pointed out the inherent human nature to prefer beauty and beautiful things. To extend this argument, they linked the issues of lookism with that of sexism- do we ‘fix’ sexism by making everybody a man? Their opponents looked at the case through the lens of utilitarianism, agreeing that surgery was perhaps too rash of a decision and does not generate the greatest good or happiness, and added to the discussion by bringing up how ever-changing beauty standards are in the modern world.

It was a long day of discussions and thinking, and the girls were thoughtful and well-considered in each round, rounds being adjudicated by PhD students, bioethicists, and deep-thinkers all around the world.

The Middle School Ethics Olympiad (ages 12-15) is up next, so if you think you’re keen, come along to Philosophy Club! If you would like to sharpen your mind against some truly deep thinkers, and to discuss big ideas such as the ideal society, the role of education, and the morality of prisons, it’s the club for you. Our discussions are led by Hamish Lewis, a Philosophy student at the University of Sydney. We meet every Tuesday afternoon from 3.15 pm to 4.45 pm in C4. If you have any questions, send an email to Dr Guss. We hope to see you there!

Work Experience Placements Wanted

SCEGGS supports all students wishing to undertake work experience and presently we are searching for a placement that might combine economics and law for a Year 11 student. However, a placement that explored either profession would be very much appreciated, too. All students are provided with insurance cover whilst at a workplace. If you are in a position to offer work experience from 3 – 5 days, please email our Careers Adviser Andrea Pinnock.

The Science Experience 2023 for Years 9 & 10

The Science Experience is a fun 1, 3 or 4 days of science activities for Year 9 and 10 students in 2023 program year held on the following dates:

  • 26–28 September at UTS
  • 4–6 October at Macquarie University

Each program is designed to provide students who have an interest in science with an opportunity to engage in a wide range of fascinating science activities under the guidance of scientists who love their work. The program takes place in over 35 universities and tertiary institutions, within many different laboratories and lecture theatres. Participants perform experiments in the laboratories, meet and hear senior lecturers in the lecture theatres, attend site visits and walk around and experience what it is like to be on the campus of a university or tertiary institution. More than 84,000 students have taken this rare opportunity, up to date.

The program also provides information about further studies in science, technology and engineering. It highlights the wide range of careers that allow students to pursue their interest and abilities in the sciences. One aspect of the program often commented on by participants is the opportunity to meet and share ideas with students from different schools. Head to their website here for more information.

IT Infrastructure Update

IT Infrastructure Update

On Friday 7 July we will be carrying out internal tests on our IT Infrastructure. This will result in intermittent outages throughout the day to the main school phone lines, as well as the Parent Portal. If you are unable to contact the School via phone, you are welcome to leave a message via our Get in Touch form on the website. Email to SCEGGS addresses will still be delivered but will likely be delayed. Testing will commence at 8:30am and should be completed by 4pm.

Year 10 Vaccination Clinic Date and Online Consent

Year 10 Vaccination Clinic Date and Online Consent

In Week 2 of Term 3, all Year 10 Students will be offered the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine through the NSW School Vaccination Program offered by NSW Health on Thursday 27 July.

Parents can now provide consent online for their child’s routine school vaccinations. Vaccinations will only be provided at school if consent has been given.

  • To complete online consent for your child’s school vaccinations, visit here.
  • Follow the steps to log in to your existing ServiceNSW account. This is the same account you may already use to renew your driver’s licence. If you don’t have a ServiceNSW account, refer to ServiceNSW to create one.
  • Update or confirm your personal details in ServiceNSW as required.
  • Complete the School Vaccination Consent Form for your child/ren. You will need to:
    • Enter your child’s personal details
    • Provide the Medicare card details for you and your child
    • Read the linked Parent Information Sheet and privacy statement
    • Provide consent

If you or your child do not have a Medicare card, consent can still be provided by requesting a paper-based consent form directly from your child’s school.

We ask that Parents of Year 10 students complete their online consent form by Thursday 20 July.

If your child misses the school vaccination clinic, the immunisation nurses will try to catch them up at their next visit. Consent can be provided online for any Year 7 students who missed the Term 1 Clinic, for them to be caught up with the dTpa and the HPV vaccinations at the upcoming Year 10 Clinic. Alternately, you can speak to a GP or pharmacist about catching up on vaccination.

For more information on routine school vaccinations, please visit here. .

or if you have any questions, please contact South Eastern Sydney Public Health Unit on:

If you require information in your language, please visit here.

Update regarding Year 7 & Year 8 Catch-up HPV Vaccinations

From February 2023, only one dose of HPV vaccination is required to be fully vaccinated. If your child is in Year 7 or above and previously missed their second dose of HPV vaccine, they are now considered fully vaccinated and do not require a second dose.
