Smoke Ceremony at the Local Preschool

Smoke Ceremony at the Local Preschool

On Monday 17 June, four girls from the Student RAP Committee were invited to The East Sydney Early Learning Centre on Bourke St to take part in a Smoking Ceremony. Raymond, the Aboriginal Elder leading the Ceremony, taught us all about the significance of how it is used as a spiritual connection.

The younger kids were slightly less involved but enjoyed it just as much. While the smoking was taking place, he taught us a fire song. He told us that this song is sung to make the fire last longer. One of the interesting things he told us about the Smoking Ceremony is that fire in his language is wii and because his People’s language is verbal you can spell it how you want.

At the conclusion of the Ceremony, Raymond buried the fire and talked to the younger kids about how the spirits will always remain at the Learning Centre. We interpreted it as him leaving it behind so it will never be forgotten just like his culture will never be forgotten. We said goodbye to our little friends and went back to school with a smoky scent in our hair and on our clothes. After this special experience we will always remember the strong Indigenous culture and the spirits that guide us each and every day.

Kindness Convention 2024

Kindness Convention 2024

On Tuesday 4 June, I had the privilege of accompanying Daisy Grice, Josephine Smith and Eliza Wilcsek from Year 5 to Pymble Ladies College, to attend the Kindness Convention. This event has been running for three years and is an opportunity for students to explore empathy, compassion and collaborate with likeminded peers from other schools. Daisy, Josephine and Eliza represented SCEGGS with maturity and were able to display this through a group project that focused on the importance of kindness and how it can positively impact their lives and those around them. Thank you to Daisy, Josephine and Eliza for being so supportive towards each other and taking on the challenges of the day confidently. We look forward to seeing how you will continue to make a difference locally and globally by spreading kindness in the community.

NSW Touch All Schools Regional Championships

Year 7 & 8 Team – June 12

On Wednesday 12 June SCEGGS sent 13 students to compete in the NSW All Schools Metro South 7/8 Touch Competition. We arrived at Vale of Ah reserve in Milperra early in the morning to wet, muddy fields but despite this we all had a smile on our face ready to play. We started out with a rough game against Mount St Benedict which resulted in a 5-0 loss. In spite of this we continued to push ourselves, clarifying any questions with our coaches to make sure we were playing our best.

Our second game was a massive success with a win against Randwick girls 4-0. This was just the start of what turned out to be a fantastic day. After this we won our next three games putting us in 2nd place on the ladder, which secured us a spot in the quarter-finals. When we hit the field, we knew it would be a hard game, but everyone tried their best and put in a tremendous amount of effort. Unfortunately, it did result in a 2-1 loss to Pymble Ladies’ College. Although this did mean our day had come to an end, we were all incredibly proud of ourselves and each other. We were proud to finish 5th out of 18 teams in the tournament. Most of all we had an amazing day, the team represented SCEGGS with a solid effort, ending the day with a well-deserved celebration at Macca’s!

Obviously, this day would not be possible without the help of the PDHPE staff so thank you to Ms Thompson, Ms Barr and Ms Gowan for organising and the incredible coaching skills of Lily Helene, Abby Burge and Head Coach Matt Wagstaff. We 100% recommend this to anyone interested in playing for the SCEGGS team next year, it is an amazing day with all your friends and a great way to improve your skills.

Adelaide Gilpin (Year 8) and Anastasia Kamper (Year 7)

Year 9 & 10 Team – June 13

Matt Wagstaff’s famous saying, ‘Touch is Life’ proved right with our early morning bus ride out to Bankstown in the cold. After blasting some music, we were all ready for a full day of touch football. It comes as no surprise that Ms Barr was shocked at our collective struggle to set up the SCEGGS tent as the first team in the field. With a strong offensive and defensive Year 9 and 10 team, we started the day out strong with a 4-1 win against Cheltenham Girls with Liv Davis having not only a hat trick but scoring all four tries! After a warning from Mr Hammond that the Pymble team had two high level touch players, we grew nervous before our second game, however our positive attitudes led us to another 4-0 win. Through Tuesday morning and Thursday lunchtime training sessions, we perfected our box drive, line attack and defence which was very useful in helping us secure our first two wins of the day. Despite touch football being the reason for the day, the highlight was definitely watching Matt get defeated in an intense card game of 500! Our last two round games against Randwick girls were easier than previous matches, however they served as an opportunity to nail our policies. Injuries proved to be a challenge during the day with Liv having a minor hand injury, leaving us with 4 middles for a game.

We still managed to score 13 tries against Randwick girls over the two games with our strong dump and scoop being our leading play. We even scored two tries in a row from runs down the wing, finished off by Sadie’s somewhat unnecessary dive at the try line. With our SCEGGS Year 9/10 team remaining undefeated and finishing first in our pool, we entered the Quarter Finals with high hopes to win and progress further than last year.

A powerful start to our game secured our 3-1 win against Mater Maria CC with Ms Barr once again catching a try on camera. With one link gone and another injured, our semifinal was a testament to our determination as a team. Despite losing 8-4 to Hunter Sports, our powerful drive led us to 2 tries off middle quickies and another try to Ava off her skilled wing quickie and impressive dive at the try line. We were all very proud of our undefeated efforts until the semifinal, progressing further than any previous SCEGGS team. With a celebratory Macca’s trip on the bus ride home, we finished off a full day of touch football in high spirits. We are all very grateful for the efforts put into training and game day by our coaches, Matt Wagstaff, Abby Burge, Lucy Juneja and Mr Hammond and teachers Ms Barr and Ms Thompson. After bonding together as a collective Year 9/10 team, we can all finally agree with Matt that ‘Touch is Life’!

North-West Interschools Equestrian Expo

Well done to Abby Simmons (Year 9) and Scarlett Webber (Year 9) who competed at the North West Interschools Equestrian Expo that was held recently at Coonabarabran.

Abby placed 10th overall in her group for the EV65 eventing (dressage, show jumping, cross country), which was a wonderful result as it was her first time competing in cross country. Abby placed 3rd in EV65 show jumping.

Scarlett placed 1st in EV80 eventing after strong results in each of the 3 disciplines. She also placed 1st in the 6 bar show jumping. Scarlett has now qualified to represent NSW at the Nationals later this year. Congratulations to both riders.

AFL Paul Kelly Cup

On Tuesday, a team of 17 students across Years 5 and 6 competed in the Paul Kelly Cup at Timbrell Park, Five Dock. The girls went undefeated in their round of games, winning 27-15 against Petersham, 29-0 against Orange Grove, and 31-6 against Drummoyne. The team came up against Petersham again in the final, and what a nailbiter it was! SCEGGS started strong and were close to scoring a goal, managing four behinds in the first half. Petersham came close to scoring in the second half, however the SCEGGS tackle and defence proved to be the difference, with the team coming away with a 4-0 victory. They have now been invited to attend the regional tournament on Wednesday 31 July at Timbrell Park. Congratulations girls. What an excellent achievement! We wish you the best of luck at the tournament.

Strings (Contemporary Strings) – Sunday 28 July

Training Band Open Rehearsal

Last Friday, our training band hosted an open rehearsal for parents and friends, offering a delightful glimpse into our weekly practice sessions. The girls demonstrated their dedication and talent, performing several pieces, including the classic “Hot Cross Buns.”

The rehearsal provided an opportunity for the audience to see the band’s progress and the hard work that goes into each session. Our musicians not only showcased their pieces but also explained how they practice at home using backing tracks, illustrating effective ways to improve their ensemble skills outside of regular rehearsals.

Parents and friends were impressed by the enthusiasm and discipline of the band members, and we look forward to more events like this that connect our band with the wider school community.

String Performances for Kindergarten

Kindergarten students have the opportunity to enrol for tuition on violin, viola, and cello, with lessons starting in Term 3. Last week, the girls in Kindergarten were lucky to have two performances to introduce them to the string instruments that they can learn. The Primary String Octet visited the Kindergarten music class and played the beautiful Air on the G string by J.S Bach and the Stringalong String Ensemble performed two fun pieces at the K-2 Assembly – D String Daydream and Sunny Day Song.

If you are interested in your daughter enrolling to start tuition in violin, viola or cello please complete the Music Tuition Form here. Learning a musical instrument is lots of fun, both musically and socially, and once your daughter has had a term or two of lessons, she will be invited to join one of our four primary string ensembles at SCEGGS. If you have any queries or concerns, please contact K-12 Director of Strings Mrs Anne Sweeney.

Debating

Debating

Year 8 are ISDA Champions

Last Friday was the Grand Final of the ISDA Debating Competition. We had an extremely successful ISDA season this year – our Year 9 team made the Quarter Finals, our Year 10 and Primary A team made the Semi Finals, and then our Primary B and Year 8 teams represented us in the Grand Final. All of our ISDA teams should be very proud of their performance this year.

The Grand Final was a wonderful evening, and thank you to all those who showed up to support SCEGGS in the audience. It was especially lovely to see the Primary A team (and some of their parents!) watching and supporting the Primary Bs. This has been by far our most successful season for Primary ISDA debating, and that is a testament to the teamwork, care, and enthusiasm of this cohort.

The Primary B team debated on the negative of the topic: “That we should ban advertising aimed at children’ and were runners up in their division.

The team consisted the following girls:

  • Susanna Brown
  • Belle Dempsey
  • Mackenzie Jothy
  • Anara Murugesan
  • Audrey Park
  • Holly Shennan

Making it to the top two of 32 schools is a truly phenomenal achievement – congratulations to this team for a great season and Grand Final debate.

The Year 8 team debated on the negative of the topic ‘That victims of crime should be allowed to choose a punishment for the person who offended against them (i.e. a judge would allow the victim to choose between jail time, rehabilitation, paying compensation, or community service).’ They won their debate unanimously, making them Champions for their division.

The team consisted of:

  • Flora Balagna
  • Josie Hatherall
  • Perri Lawrence
  • Anna Luo
  • Marina Roberts

It was a fantastic way for this team to wrap up their season – they finished first in their pool, having won six of their seven debates in the rounds, and they then debated spectacularly in the final.

Archdale

Well done to the Year 7B, Year 8B, Year 8A, Juniors, and Year 10 for winning their Archdale debates on Tuesday night. Round 5 was the last round of debates this term, and Year 7B and Year 10 remain undefeated. All our teams are on at least three wins, which is a very good place to be with two rounds remaining.

Debating resumes in Week 2 next term, with training on Monday and then Round 6 of Archdale on Tuesday, when we will be travelling to Wenona.

Public Speaking at SCEGGS

Public Speaking at SCEGGS

Term 2 has been an outstanding term for SCEGGS Public Speaking. This Saturday 22 June Jessica Gallie (Year 9) will compete in the state final of the Rostrum Voice of Youth at Sydney Grammar, not Shore as previously stated. Jessica is one of the six who have made it through from over 400 students in the first round. Anyone who would like to support Jessica is welcome to attend but students must be accompanied by an adult.

 The details are:

Date:   Saturday 22 June
Time:   1.30 – 5.45pm
Venue:

Sydney Grammar School
Alastair Mackerras Theatre
Stanley Street, Darlinghurst NSW 2010

Celia Watson (Year 11) competed in the third round, the semi-final, of the Plain English Speaking Award last Friday. Hundreds of students competed in round one and Celia was one of just 23 students competing for a place in the final. Unfortunately she wasn’t successful but did deliver two powerful speeches.

Congratulations to both our girls for their outstanding achievements and good luck Jessica.

Amnesty International

Amnesty International

Amnesty International at SCEGGS supports Refugee Week. This year the theme is Finding Freedom, with a focus on family. This theme aims to shed light on the power of familial bonds, chosen or not, in the face of adversity. It seeks to emphasise the crucial role that these connections play in providing solace, support and a sense of belonging to those forced to flee their homelands.

Refugee week is a celebration of the many ways in which refugees contribute to our society. This ranges from their expansive wisdom and knowledge to their participation in a range of professions. It’s also an opportunity for us to educate ourselves about the issues that affect refugees and listen to the stories of those seeking asylum. Below are several resources to get you started:

Amnesty international, a social justice organisation, advocates for neighbourhood-driven solutions to increase humanitarian intake and bring our share of refugees safely to Australia. A key initiative for refugees is a community sponsorship program. It aims to allow groups and individuals to provide refugees with employment prospects and support them in their settlement journey.

At SCEGGS we support Refugee Week through the House of Welcome, a safe community for refugees, or otherwise forcibly displaced individuals. For Refugee Week each year, SCEGGS donates food and material aid to our community. Each year group is asked to bring in a specific product, listed as follows:

  • Year 7 – savoury biscuits
  • Year 8 – shampoo and conditioner
  • Year 9 – deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes
  • Year 10 – sugar and flour
  • Year 11 – laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid
  • Year 12 – coffee, tea and cooking oil

We request you to put them in the basket outside the Chapel, and to ensure no spaghetti or baked beans are brought in.

This is an immediate and easy way in which we can provide assistance to those who need it. Our donations really benefit the neighbouring communities that they go to. These goods restock the House of Welcome’s supplies, who hand them out to the people in need, many of whom are refugees.

Thank you in advance,

Isabelle Rath-Mazzochi

Year 10 (& Year 7 catch-up) Vaccination Clinic Dates and Online Consent

Year 10 (& Year 7 catch-up) Vaccination Clinic Dates and Online Consent

In Week 2 of Term 3, all Year 10 Students will be offered the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine through the NSW School Vaccination Program offered by NSW Health on Friday 2 August.

Additionally, any Year 7 students who missed the Term 1 Clinic will be caught up with the dTpa and the HPV vaccinations. If your Year 7 child is on the list to be vaccinated at the upcoming Clinic you will receive an email from the school.

Vaccinations will only be provided at school if consent has been received. Online consent is accepted through the NSW Health School Vaccination Program portal.

How to provide consent:

  1. To complete online consent for your child’s school vaccinations, visit here.
  2. Follow the steps to log in to your existing ServiceNSW account. This is the same account you may already use to renew your driver’s licence. If you don’t have a ServiceNSW account, refer to ServiceNSW to create one.
  3. Update or confirm your personal details in ServiceNSW as required.
  4. Complete the School Vaccination Consent Form for your child/ren. You will need to:
    1. Enter your child’s personal details
    2. Provide the Medicare card details for you and your child
    3. Read the Parent Information Sheet and privacy statement
    4. Provide consent

Detailed instructions can be found on the NSW Health website.

If you or your child do not have a Medicare card, consent can still be provided by requesting a paper consent form from the school.

We ask that Parents of Year 10 students complete their online consent form by Thursday 25 July.

If your child misses the school vaccination clinic, the immunisation nurses will try to catch them up at their next visit. Alternately, you can speak to a GP or pharmacist about catching up on vaccinations.
