Hope: SCEGGS’ 130 Anniversary Concert

Hope: SCEGGS’ 130 Anniversary Concert

We are very excited for our 130th Anniversary Concert on Monday evening. There are a handful of tickets still available (please see the SCEGGS Mobile App for booking links), with the concert beginning promptly at 6.00pm.

A few reminders about the arrangements for the day.

Secondary School

Students in Years 7-12 are not required to attend school on Monday. Year 12 students will have a study day while all students in Years 7-11, including all musicians, will meet their Form Teachers in Sydney Square  (next to the Town Hall) for rehearsals.

  • 10.30am: Year 7 Form Teachers to meet Year 7 students in Sydney Square, mark the roll carefully and then move inside for rehearsals.
  • 11.00am: Years 8-11 Form Teachers to meet Years 8-11 students in Sydney Square, mark the roll carefully and then move inside for rehearsals.

Secondary students will be dismissed from the rehearsals at the Town Hall at approximately 12.30pm, unless they are required for additional music rehearsals throughout the afternoon. Precise rehearsal schedules for all Secondary musicians have been provided by the Music Department. Parents of Secondary girls who are in musical groups that rehearse throughout the afternoon should be aware that girls may be dismissed for short, unsupervised breaks in the vicinity of the Town Hall.

Primary School

Students in K-2 will have a usual school day, with lessons, co-curricular activities and After School Care activities (if required) running as usual on the Monday. For the rest of the Primary School (Years 3-6), girls should come to school in the morning at normal time and will travel by bus to and from the Town Hall accompanied by their teachers. Girls must arrive at school by 8.30am, and we expect them to return to school at approximately 1.00pm. Parents or carers may collect their daughter from school at 1.30 pm if they wish, but supervision will also be available for students in Years 3-6 from 1.30pm – 4.00pm that afternoon.

Arrangements for the evening Years 3 – 12

Attendance at the evening concert is compulsory for all girls from Years 3 – 12. Correct winter uniform including blazers should be worn by all students.

  • Prefects will meet at the Town Hall at 4.15pm.
  • Years 7-12 will meet their Form Teachers directly at the Town Hall at 5pm.
  • Years 3-6 students have already made arrangements to either meet their teachers at School at 4pm to travel by bus back to the Town Hall accompanied by their teachers or meet at the Town Hall in Sydney Square at 5pm.

It is anticipated that the Concert will conclude just before 8pm. All students should arrange to meet their parents afterwards in Sydney Square promptly at 8pm.

As is standard etiquette at most concerts, any latecomers with tickets will only be admitted during a suitable break in the performance.

It is shaping up to be an amazing evening of music, celebration and connection,  featuring the premiere of several new works commissioned specifically for the school’s birthday – we can’t wait to experience it with you!

SCEGGS Wins Gold in the 2025 Senior Ethics Olympiad, NSW/ACT Division

On Friday 2 May, two teams of five SCEGGS students from Years 10-12 competed in the NSW/ACT Senior Division of the International Ethics Olympiad. The competition is hosted over Zoom and involves over 300 teams, 34 of which were involved in this round. The form of the competition is a series of structured conversations, somewhat like a debate with the important difference being that teams do not have to take a certain position and can even agree with each other. Scoring is based on the depth and appropriateness of the ethical arguments put forward by the competitors. The case studies in this year’s competition included the ethics of dog-eating, romantic relationships with chatbots, assisted dying, banning tobacco, age-based curfews, and the revision of Roald Dahl’s works to make them fit better with today’s moral standards.

Judges commended the two SCEGGS teams on their insight and their broad knowledge of ethical frameworks.

SCEGGS Purple placed ninth overall. The team members were: Zoe Lindner (Year 12), Florence Furness (Year 11), Jasmine Cohen (Year 10), Harriet Christie (Year 10), and Giulia Peroni (Year 10).

SCEGGS Blue came first and were awarded gold medals. They will compete early next term in the International Final against teams from the United States, South Korea, New Zealand, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, The UK, Canada and every state and territory in Australia.

The gold medal-winning SCEGGS team were Eleanor Lawrie (Year 12), Emily Taylor (Year 12), Aliyah Bensan (Year 11), Leona Brenton (Year 11), and Jemima Lowe (Year 11).

Congratulations to everyone involved!

The gold medal winning “ethletes”. L–R: Jemima Lowe, Aliyah Bensan, Leo Brenton, Eleanor Lawrie, and Emily Taylor

Our Wider Community In Mind

Thanks again to everyone who has brought in blankets and warm clothing over the last few weeks. I already have a truck load of items and am happy to receive more. I will be delivering these items later next week so if you can bring in those hoodies, blankies and trackies before the holidays that would be great. I have also appreciated your support in providing grocery items. It is always interesting how certain needs follow a trend around the variety of welfare agencies we are connected to. At the moment, there is a big call out for toiletries (particularly shampoo, conditioner and roll-on deodorant). I have even been asked if we supply nappies! If anyone knows where we might be able to find these goods I am more than happy to make contact. All of these items can be delivered to my office, to me in the morning at the front gate or in the baskets outside the Chapel.

One of our Year 8 mums, Philippa Baker, has kindly set up the next lot of dates for Term 3 in the SignUp app here for those that are interested in the Monday Food Delivery. If you are not sure what this is or haven’t been involved before, go onto the app and you will find all you need there. If you have any questions, please contact me at anytime. Thanks again to everyone within our community for your continued generosity. I can assure you that every meal is very well appreciated.

The SCEGGS Podcast “Walk The Mile” Episode 66: Leaders Creating Leaders with Ian Narev

One of our hopes as a school is that we would be helping to create the leaders of the future. How that is done and the best way to do that is a complex process which requires lessons in all forms. Ian Narev has been a leader in a number of large organisations and is currently the CEO of SEEK, the leading online employment agency in Australia. He is also a father of three daughters at SCEGGS and a long standing Director of the School Board. In this conversation, we discuss what it takes to be a leader, creating future leaders and how passion and commitment play a big part in leadership. We also talk a little bit about rugby!

And a reminder that we are published on Spotify, Apple, Google Podcast and Deezer, so you can access it easier from your preferred device. I always welcome your feedback or any ideas you may have for further episodes. You will find each podcast as they are produced in this newsletter and on the other platforms as well as our website.

Sienna Weir Poetry Workshop and Prize

Sienna Weir Poetry Workshop and Prize

Last year we were excited to invite Australian poet Jane Gibian to SCEGGS to work with a small group of Year 6 and 7 students as a part of the inaugural Sienna Weir poetry workshop and prize. The students spent a day learning about poetry, writing and drafting their own pieces while also receiving feedback from Ms Gibian. After drafting, revisions and editing, each student’s work was published by the school and considered for a Speech Night prize.

Sienna’s parents are generously supporting this workshop again this year and we are delighted to invite Ms Gibian back in Term 3 to work with a new group of students. Students are invited to apply for this opportunity by submitting one or two pieces of poetry to either Ms Cristi Wilsmore (Year 6 students) or Ms Jenny Bean (Year 7 students) at the email addresses below.

Students may submit any pieces they have composed this year (including pieces they may have worked on in class or submitted for other competitions). All entries must be submitted electronically by Friday 25 July (Week 1, Term 3). We look forward to reading the entries

Peer Mentor Program

Peer Mentor Program

We, the 7BN Peer Mentors are so grateful to be able to spend time with our Form class; from the fun memories from Year 7 Welcome Day to our recent success in Mid-Week Madness.

The year started with the Year 7 Welcome Day which was an amazing opportunity to meet our wonderful Form class and give them a little introduction to life at SCEGGS. Throughout Term 1 we went to their Form classes, participated in Mid-Week madness and gave them a send off when they left for Year 7 camp.

We have loved watching the girls work as a team and cheer each other on from the sidelines in both Basketball and Soccer – a shoutout to Gabriella Botros for scoring our Form’s first goal in Mid-Week Madness!  Although we may not have been winning in Mid-week Madness it was still great seeing lots of 7BN showing up and ready to play always with a positive attitude.

In Term 2, we have helped the girls with study skills in Form before exam week. The highlight has been Mid-Week Madness as everyone has really gotten involved and the atmosphere in the Sports Hall is contagious and LOUD! We are inspired by the Year 7s every time we see them, their outstanding perseverance and joy as they battle it out every Wednesday lunch – their energy and enthusiasm is so infectious and they are always making us laugh, so thank you to you all!

130th Concert Sunday Rehearsals

On Sunday, we had over 250 students across both Primary and Secondary School come to school to rehearse for the upcoming 130 Anniversary Concert. Composers Jayne Groves, Matt Moore and Jodie Blackshaw were able to listen to their commissioned pieces this week, some for the very first time. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm of all of the students and staff as their pieces come together.

Keep up the practice! We look forward to sharing these performances with you at the 130th Concert.
