STOP PRESS: School Uniform Next Week!

With the unseasonably warm weather forecast for next week, all students K-12 have the option of wearing either full summer uniform or full winter uniform each day next week, based on the forecast for the day.

All students should be in full summer uniform from the beginning of Term 4.

From the Chaplain

From the Chaplain

This is the last week for our Year 12 students and it always comes with a bit of sadness for me. I have known some of these students and their families for the last 13 years (some even longer) and it has been a privilege to watch all of them grow and to get to know them over whatever time their school journey has been at SCEGGS. I hope that they will be well supported in whatever they do and know that this is still, and always will be, their community. My thoughts and prayers go with you Class of 2023!!

The SCEGGS Podcast “Walk The Mile” Episode 43: Seeing the Full Story

In this episode I speak to one of our Alumni, Vivienne Smith (Class of 2008), about her career as an adventure documentary film maker and world traveller. We discuss her experience of different cultures and landscapes and how that has impacted who she is today. Viv also explains the new app that she is involved with that takes the viewer to the locations of a whole range of famous movies and television shows. Her story about documenting other people’s stories is exciting and eye opening. I hope you enjoy our conversation.

And a reminder that we are published on Spotify, Apple, Google Podcast and Deezer, so you can access it easier from your preferred device. I always welcome your feedback or any ideas you may have for further episodes. You will find each podcast as they are produced in this newsletter and on the other platforms as well as our website.

Stage 2 Oracy Showcase

Stage 2 Oracy Showcase

Oral language is more than just giving news or delivering a prepared speech in class, it is about creating a rich language environment. In Stage 2 this term, the teachers and girls have certainly created an environment rich in oracy by exploring aspects of reading fluency, practising their choral reading skills, and rehearsing and reciting a poem in small groups. This all culminated in the Stage 2 Oracy Showcase where four teams from both Year 3 and 4 were selected to present. Creating opportunities like this to showcase oracy skills to different audiences and beyond the classroom raises its status. Presenting to an audience other than their teacher or peers also raises expectations, as was proven on the day.

In delivering their performance, the girls were asked to consider aspects of reading fluency such as expression, rhythm, phrasing, and timing. They were also asked to consider presentational oracy skills such as speaking with clarity and at a volume for easy listening and ensuring appropriate posture and presentation. Finally, they were asked to consider teamwork, after all choral reading requires effective collaboration.

We would like to acknowledge the following teams who took part in the showcase:

Year 3 Finalists

  • Sophia Jarman, Bianca Carroll, Nea Bell Stiksel and Livia Holzner who recited The Crocodile by Roald Dahl
  • Emma Bozunovic, Luca Tuigamala, Ava Grange and Sasha Copley who recited The Pig by Roald Dahl
  • Maya Clark, Clementine Darling, Madeleine Chirakis and Fiona Wu who recited Television by Roald Dahl
  • Ava Yusiw, Olivia Ellmore, Odette Cavanagh-Downs and Alexandra Hackett who recited The Three Little Pigs by Roald Dahl

Year 4 Finalists

  • Harriet Hilton, Mila Gupta and Eva Geha who recited The Tale of the Custard Dragon by Ogden Nash
  • Grace McLean, Eloise Switajewski, Alessandra Voitenko Turner and Anastasia Atgemis who recited All My Great Excuses by Ken Nesbitt.
  • Elisabeth Hinchcliffe, Emily Lansdown, Alice Beaumont and Aisling Blackburn who recited Teddy Bear by A. A. Milne
  • Catherine Skamvougeras, Arabella Conrad-Martin, Aleisha Yeung and Emilia Laban who recited Sick by Shel Silverstein

Congratulations to Year 3 Maya Clark, Clementine Darling, Madeleine Chirakis and Fiona Wu whose recitation of Television was awarded first place on the day and Year 4 Harriet Hilton, Mila Gupta and Eva Geha who received Highly Commended.

A special thank you to our Year 12 judges, Ciara Henshaw and Samantha Dawson who took time out of their busy schedule to adjudicate, and our Year 5 hosts, Evie Duncan, Victoria Poniros, Alexia Marskell, Sofea Davey, Ella Ungur and Evie Thorpe.

HSC Science Extension Panel Discussion

Our five Year 12 Science Extension students presented their research at a panel discussion in the Senior Library last Tuesday. Sitting in front of their conference-style posters, the students described the challenges they faced, their results, and the implications for future research. It was standing room only with an audience full of students and staff. Milla Brown described her first-hand investigation of the nicotine content of e-cigarettes. Alice Martin explored the possibility of using chelation as a treatment for the buildup of iron in the brain that is associated with Parkinson’s disease. Sally Webster discussed the use of waste coffee grounds as a source of activated carbon for the purpose of filtering heavy metals from water. Emma Talbot treated genetically modified organisms as invasive species when investigating their impact on ecosystems. Annie Furness sought correlations between the metallicity of stars and the properties of their exoplanets. In responding to questions from the audience, the panelists mused on the increasingly-serious battle against pseudoscience, the need for blue skies research, and the responsibility of scientists to report their findings without bias. Milla, Alice, Sally, Emma and Annie are to be congratulated on their efforts in carrying out independent research over the past year.

Year 12 Chemists Excel in the Finals of the NSW Titration Competition

Each member of our SCEGGS Finalist team were awarded medals for their accuracy in the Finals of the NSW Titration Competition.

The NSW Schools Titration Competition is an analytical chemistry competition open to NSW students enrolled in Senior Chemistry. The Competition attracts over 1200 students from over 100 NSW schools from across the state.

Students compete in teams of three to complete a first-hand analytical experiment to determine the unknown concentration of an acid. Each team’s overall score depends on the accuracy of the estimates measured by each member.

Based on their results in the Qualifying round of the Competition, one of our teams was selected to take part in the Final round, which took place on Saturday 9 September at UNSW. This team consisted of Jessica Millen, Isabella Morgan, and Josephine Robson.

In the competition, Isabella achieved a gold medal for excellence in accuracy, while Jessica and Josephine both achieved silver medals for commendation. This was a terrific result and we were very proud of the students’ commitment to training prior to the day, and for their excellent performance in the final round.

A huge thank you to our wonderful laboratory technician, Selena Browne, who supported the students in each round of the competition, and ensured they were well-equipped to compete and achieve such pleasing results.

SCOPE 12

SCOPE is a biannual publication that showcases student writing about arts practice and provides compelling insights into the art world through reviews, critical writing, and interviews. It is a student led initiative that aims to bring all aspects of the artworld into focus and provide critiques and details of current exhibitions in Sydney, as well as exploring national and overseas events.

The Lead Editors for this issue have been Year 10 students Imogen Zimmerle and Maya Shearing with Zoe Lindner in the role of Special Features Writer.

Being part of the SCOPE team helps develop your research and analytical skills, builds your collaborative and critical thinking, and enables you to meet new friends and create new relationships and contacts both in the student community and in the vast network of artists, and art world practitioners associated with SCEGGS.

This is a bumper issue focusing on past and present changes within the art world. You can access the online version of SCOPE here or hard copies are available in the Secondary School Library and from the Art Staffroom.

Congratulations to all the contributors: Imogen Zimmerle (Year 10), Amelia Ransom (Year 11) , Bridgette Dunlop (Year 11), Coco Riminton (Year 12), Mia Butcher (Year 10), Portia Palmerlee (Year 12), Zoe Lindner (Year 10) and Maya Shearing (Year 10).

This week’s banner is a work from Year 12 student Holly Salter’s Body of Work titled: Crossroads.

HSC Examination Supervisors Needed

HSC Examination Supervisors Needed

We are in need of parents or Old Girls who are interested in supervising HSC exams. No previous experience is necessary. For security reasons, an individual who has a child or near relative sitting for the examinations is not eligible for appointment as a paid supervisor. Those acting as supervisors will require a paid Working with Children Check.

The HSC starts on Wednesday 11 October and finishes on Friday 3 November. Shifts can be morning or afternoon and are various in length. If you are interested in supervising this year you must be available to work on Wednesday 11 October, Thursday 12 October and Monday 16 October in the morning. These are the busiest days and we will need a large number of supervisors.

Please contact our Presiding Officer, Mrs Alison Gavan, to express interest in becoming an examination supervisor. She will also be happy to answer any queries you may have. She can be contacted by email.
