From the Chaplain

From the Chaplain

Thanks to all of those within our community that have been sending messages of support and offering a helping hand as we continue through a difficult time in the life of the School. Someone said to me recently that as hard and horrible as it is, the strength of the community comes to the forefront in a situation like this. I am extremely appreciative for all that you give to make SCEGGS what it is.

Donations for those less fortunate

As I travel around to different community centres, speak to their staff and engage with people living on the street, it certainly seems like our city is hitting crisis point. More and more people are seeking help with food, clothing, bills and just someone to hear their story of struggle. I am encouraged by the willingness of our community to donate towards the lives of the underprivileged in our area. You can always email me if you have something you would like to give but uncertain about where it should go.

At the moment, there is a huge call out for grocery items to help fill the food pantries of certain welfare organizations. Some of the specific items that are being requested are:

UHT milk, tea bags, coffee, cereal, tuna, salmon, baked beans, spaghetti, noodles, tinned vegetables, spreads, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste.

There is a basket inside my office where items can be placed anytime. You may also leave any donations at the General Office with my name on it. We will also be running our annual Hoodies, Trackies and Blankies Drive soon and more information will be coming out soon.

There are still some spaces available for our Monday Food Delivery and you can find these in the SignUp App. If you have been thinking about getting involved or have had no idea that we do this, here is your opportunity.  Any questions, let me know.

Eloise’s journey began with a love of storytelling. After completing a Bachelor of Media (Writing) at Macquarie University, she earned a scholarship to study in London, before returning to Australia to train as an actor at Actors Centre Australia, where she graduated with an Advanced Diploma of Performing Arts.

Since then, Eloise has built an impressive career across film, television and theatre. On screen, she has appeared in major productions including Disney’s The Artful Dodger (Season 2) and CBS/Binge’s hit series Colin From Accounts (Seasons 1 and 2). On stage, she recently starred as Mary Jane in the Australian premiere of Mary Jane by Amy Herzog, named one of the Sydney Morning Herald’s Top 5 Shows of 2025, and will return to the Ensemble Theatre this year in Midnight Murder on the Christmas Cruise of Death.

As a writer, Eloise’s debut play Pony was a breakout success, shortlisted for multiple major awards and applauded by critics and audiences alike. After premiering in Sydney, Pony is heading to London later this year and is now being developed for the screen.

To hear about Eloise’s real-world experiences, challenges, successes and advice, please join us on Friday 22 May!

Musicale 2

Thank you to all our performers and guests who joined us for Musicale 2 – an evening of joyous music and celebration!

K-2 Piano Concert

Last Friday at lunchtime, 17 keen piano students performed for parents and grandparents in the Primary Music Room. Many of the performers learn at school from one of our wonderful tutors – Catherine, Chloe, Lisa or Natalia – and a few have tutors outside of school. All were happy to sit atop the piano stool and share their music with the attentive audience. Congratulations to all performers – we look forward to hearing you play again soon!

Open Mic

As part of Music Week, the opportunity to perform for lunch-goers in the Cafeteria was offered last Wednesday and Thursday. A lovely woodwind quartet opened proceedings on Wednesday and, after a little bit of encouragement, more brave souls came forward to strut their stuff! Zoe Coudounaris sang a favourite from Moana, while Camille Asher warned us that The Winner Takes It All. A classic by Billy Joel called Vienna impressed the lively crowd of onlookers, as did that old favourite, Stand By Me. On Thursday, Miss Harrigan and Ms Holmes had to stir the hesitant few into action by smashing out some old-time numbers such as I Feel Pretty and I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues. Some enthusiastic Year 11 Elective Music students couldn’t resist the opportunity to revisit Wade in the Water and Since You’ve Been Gone. Ying Huang was inspired to entertain on the keyboard, as was Dasha Jolley. All in all, it was fun to try something new and bring some musical talent to the place of feasting. Perhaps we should do it again soon!

Flash Mob

Monday at lunchtime in the cafeteria was the designated place for a rendition of Opening Up from Waitress the Musical by members of the Contemporary Vocal Ensemble.

Emma Pask in JF Foyer

Last Friday morning, the Emma Pask Jazz Band set up in the foyer of the JF building to serenade students as they arrived at school.

Open Percussion Rehearsals

Both Edwardes and Van Reyk Percussion Ensembles opened the doors to interested parties for their regular rehearsals last Thursday and Friday mornings before school. The observers who attended were suitably impressed by the rhythmic warmups and masterful mallet manipulations of the students involved, all under the watchful eyes of either Matt Moore or Jayne Groves. We look forward to their next appearances at Festival on Forbes and Musicale!

Beyond the Green Gate

Olivia Yan, Year 3, piano, has been selected as a finalist in the 33rd Chopin International Piano Competition for Children and Youth in Szafarnia, Poland.

She is one of only two children representing Australia in this prestigious competition. The competition brings together young pianists from around the world aged 10 to 16, so we were especially surprised and proud that Olivia was able to reach the final at just 8 years old.

Cheryl Zhang, Year 8, piano, has been selected to compete in this year’s Young Lev Competition.

Only 12 students from Australia and New Zealand were selected. Early next month, she will compete in the first round.

We love hearing about ways our musicians are involved in music-making outside of school. Please send details to Heidi Jones.

The Lion King

Twenty students attended a performance of The Lion King at the Capitol Theatre last Sunday. As a new generation of theatregoers, they had never witnessed the spectacle and magic of this iconic, award-winning production. It was great to see it anew through their eyes.

Students will have an opportunity to see the musical Waitress in Term 3.

Year 11’s Charlotte Self and Josephine Grayden report on The Lion King theatre party:

The Lion King was a bold and energetic show that made great use of movement, colour and live music! The opening was easily one of the most memorable moments, with performers coming down the aisles as animals. Seeing them up close really showed the physicality of the cast. The way they moved, crouched and carried themselves made the animal characters feel believable without relying on heavy effects. It set the tone for a production that relied more on performance and staging than on technical tricks.

The overall design was striking, with strong lighting choices and costumes that created a clear sense of place. The percussion added a lot of drive to the bigger scenes, and the ensemble handled the choreography with confidence.

I am currently in rehearsals for Girl Asleep so fellow castmate Zara and I got some cool ideas for our characters, and the physicality of the performers gave me some ideas for my character. The Lion King was an engaging and fun show with a very talented cast.
Charlotte Self

What struck me the most about this production was the incredible stagecraft and artistry which brought the African savannah to life. From the moment the curtain rose, we were transported to a wonderful world of intricate choreography, masterful puppeteering and inspiring choral work.

The show covered a range of vocal and dance styles including traditional African incantation, theatre jazz, ballet and contemporary dance. It was truly unlike any other musical production I have ever seen!

Being in a play myself (Girl Asleep) which uses shadow puppeteering techniques, it was so inspiring to see these techniques mastered by industry professionals. The experience was incredibly immersive, with performers sweeping down the aisles in song, and two percussion players from the live orchestra seated in boxes on either side of the stage. I only wish the songs could have been longer- while the production had an incredibly talented ensemble cast, there was not a lot of ensemble singing.

Otherwise, this show was such a joy to watch, and so accessible to audiences of all ages- I think every audience member could take away something, from the elaborate sets and costumes to the innovative use of puppets, to the awe-inspiring song and dance, there was something for everyone.
Josephine Grayden

Girl Asleep

Rehearsals for our first SCEGGS production of the year, Girl Asleep, are well underway.

Production dates are:

  • Wednesday 17 June, Thursday 18 June, Friday 19 June at 7pm
  • Saturday 20 June at 1pm.

Bookings open on Monday 1 June.

Cast member Nina Fitzgerald (Year 8) reports from the rehearsal room:

Rehearsals for our school production of Girl Asleep are steadily in motion and excitement is building throughout our cast and Drama Department.

For those who don’t know, Girl Asleep is a play set in Australia set in the late 1970s. It is about an introverted girl called Greta navigating her social, romantic and emotional life after moving to a new school and the dreamscape-like events that happen the night of her 15th Birthday party…

Over the past few weeks, the cast and crew have been working hard to bring this imaginative story to life. The play is really beginning to take shape, with costume fittings now underway. We can’t wait to showcase the beautiful designs created by our talented costume and set designer, Anna Gardiner.

The unique characters and symbolic storyline make Girl Asleep a captivating, surrealist and escapist production. Our director, Poppy Lynch, is looking forward to sharing the play’s messages about adolescence and growing up, and we hope audience members will each take away something meaningful from the performance.

Between long, weekend rehearsals and relaxed prop-building “craft-a-noons”, the cast has poured an incredible amount of time, creativity, and heart into the production. Girl Asleep has become a truly collaborative project, shaped by the ideas and contributions of everyone involved.

We are excited to share Girl Asleep with our school community and look forward to welcoming audiences soon.

The Government Inspector

Congratulations to Year 10 students Sophie Downes, Sarah Bird and Victoria Bradman on being cast in the Newington production of Nikolai Gogol’s The Government Inspector.

  • Anna: Sophie Downes
  • Maria: Sarah Bird
  • Locksmith’s Wife: Victoria Bradman

Eisteddfod

Congratulations to Nancy Newton (Year 12) who obtained second place in the Sydney Eisteddfod Shakespeare.

The adjudicator remarked; “So good! Made the verse feel so relatable, and the use of the prop paper cleverly used. You have a natural knack with the text, with good vocals, good interpretation and nice effortless presence.”

Nancy performed Julia’s monologue from Act 1, Scene 2 of ‘Two Gentleman of Verona’.

Theatresports Challenge

SCEGGS will have teams competing in a Theatresports Challenge being hosted at Sydney Grammar on Wednesday 27 May.

Competing schools are Sydney Grammar, Scots and Ascham.

Students have been in training with Coaches Ms Emilia Higgs and Mr Stephen Colyer.

Teams announced in future editions of BTGG.

Theatre Buzz

The Lion King is the best-selling theatre production of all time on New York’s Broadway. Still running today, it has grossed over $1.6 billion since it opened in 1997. It is followed by Wicked, which opened in 2003 and has grossed $1.37 billion, and The Phantom of the Opera, which opened in 1988 and has grossed $1.25 billion. The newest play to reach the top ten is – of course – Hamilton, which opened in 2015 and has grossed nearly $650 million.

Year 11 Retreat

Year 11 Retreat

The Year 11 Retreat, held at Attunga, in the absolutely breathtaking Southern Highlands, was truly a wonderful experience which fostered endless laughs, unbreakable bonds and memories that will never leave me.

Settling back into school after the holidays and after a term of extremely stressful exams, the Retreat was an amazing opportunity to just take a moment of pause in the busy school term, to leave our phones and worries behind and to relax and spend time all together while being immersed in the serene Australian landscape.

One of the most notable memories was the excessive number of meals we were served; in fact, one day we ate breakfast, first morning tea, second morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, dessert and supper.  May might say the camp put the ‘eat’ in retrEAT.

On the first night we had a bonfire where many of the musically talented girls in our year group played the guitar while we all sang in unison – that night created an unparalleled feeling of cohesion amongst us and really made me realise how grateful I am to be able to spend my high school days with such a lively, caring and supportive cohort. Across both days there were a wide range of activities that we participated in from the absolutely terrifying flying fox that spanned across rolling valleys to the landscape painting where we had the privilege of capturing the beauty of our environment in a creative way. But what I enjoyed most was the two daily hours of free time to explore the camp and connections within ourselves. I remember going on a walk with one of my best friends and noticed girls sitting on the front porch giving each other henna tattoos, girls writing each other gratitude notes, girls playing volleyball together and girls sitting in the hot tub chatting.

Seeing everyone come together while doing the things they loved was so heartwarming and allowed us to deepen our connections with each other which is vital in our senior years of high school. Between the immoderate cardio Ms Wymer made us do, which she disguised as ‘barn dancing’ and witnessing the entire year group belt Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’’ led by Mr Massey, it was such a special experience that we will all cherish forever.

Year 6 Camp

Year 6 Camp

In Week 3, Year 6 embarked on their Outdoor Education Camp at Attunga. Despite the chilly conditions, the girls approached every challenge with enthusiasm and resilience. From mountain biking and canoeing, to zip lining on the flying fox and conquering the giant swing, they consistently encouraged one another and stepped outside their comfort zones. Along the way, they created lasting memories, strengthened friendships, and demonstrated a strong sense of teamwork and pride.

Here’s what the girls had to say about their camp experience:

I was petrified to go on the giant swing. However, after a bit of encouragement from my friends, I did it. On my second turn I even went higher!
Chloe Anderson

During one of the evenings, we had a trivia and talent night. It was so funny watching and listening to everyone during the animal sound competition. I loved chatting with friends during cabin time.
Poppy Poyntz

It was challenging to continue persevering during mountain bike riding. I was so proud and glad that I kept going!
Ivy Zhang

The food at Attunga was amazing. What made it even better were the incredible chefs, particularly Nicky. We loved Year 6 camp. It was such a memorable experience.
Zoe Hepple, Maya Clark and Sasha Booth-Bali

One of my favourite parts about camp was seeing kangaroos and star gazing. We even saw the Milky Way!
Victoria Tang

The amount of singing I got to do during the activities made me have an absolute blast of a camp! Also, the flying fox was the most adrenaline‑rushing thing I have ever done!
Kaylee Wang

We extend our sincere thanks to Miss Madeleine Whitfeld, Miss Katherine Lock, Mrs Helen Dempsey, Mrs Olivia Whelan and Miss Bella Anderssen for their care, guidance and commitment in supporting the girls and keeping them safe throughout the camp.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Term 2 is always a busy time for Public Speaking and this year has been no exception.  In week 3 SCEGGS hosted the first heat of the Dame Enid Lyon Oratory Award with three more heats to run over the next three weeks.  The final for this competition will be held at Government House on 10 June 2026.

Pippa Brenner (Year 12) represented SCEGGS and spoke on the quote “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— / I took the one less travelled by, / And that has made all the difference.” From The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost.  She delivered a clear, thought provoking exploration of the ideas in this quote and spoke about the value in leaving our roads open, exploring more than just those two roads and being open to possibilities.  The finalists will be announced after the final heat has been completed so watch this space.  Good luck Pippa!

Daisy Carson (Year 11) and Isobel Weston (Year 10) both spent last Friday at Newtown School of the Performing Arts competing against students from Loreto Kiribilli, Sydney Grammar, Newington, Riverview and more at the Plain English Speaking Award.  It was quite possibly the strongest heat I have seen at a first round of this competition in 20 years – it was a very enjoyable day but tough competition.  Daisy and Isobel spoke beautifully in both their prepared and impromptu speeches but did not progress to the next round.  Congratulations to you both, you did the School proud.

Finally, on Monday this week the Regional final of Rostrum Voice of Youth was held.  Four of our original six competitors made it through.  They are Bianca Elias (Year 8), Siena Walsh (Year 8), Sofia Tzouganatos (Year 10) and Pippa Brenner (Year 12).  Congratulations to them all and a special congratulations to Pippa and Siena who won their heats and will progress to the State Final which will be held on 13 June at Meriden School.

Touch

On Friday 1 May, SCEGGS proudly took two teams to compete at the NSW All Schools Touch Championships in Gosford. It was a fantastic day of competition, with both teams progressing through to the semi-finals and ultimately finishing in the top four of their respective divisions, an outstanding achievement.

This success is a reflection of the players’ enthusiasm, commitment, and willingness to continue developing their skills beyond the Term 1 Touch season. It was also wonderful to see the continued support and dedication of our coaching staff, who played an important role in guiding the teams on the day.

Congratulations to all players and coaches involved for representing SCEGGS with such energy, teamwork, and pride.

Basketball

Well done to our SCEGGS 4 and SCEGGS 5 Basketball teams who played off against one another in the IGSA Competition. The match was a tightly contested fixture that changed leads multiple times with SCEGGS 4 eventually winning 14-12.

Round 2 – IPSHA Sport Results

Round 2 of the IPSHA Netball, IPSHA Minkey/Hockey, and Year 3 Touch Football competitions took place last Saturday. It has been a strong start for the SCEGGS teams across each of the sports.

The IPSHA Netball teams managed five wins, including SCEGGS Blue having their second convincing win of the season, managing to score over 20 goals in their fixture. One of the standout performers so far has been Zoe Hepple (Year 6) with her pinpoint shooting. Ms Abby Moar has been particularly impressed with the ball movement of each of the teams.

In IPSHA Minkey/Hockey, the teams have won three out of four fixtures from the first two rounds. On Saturday, the SCEGGS 1 team had a narrow 1-3 loss against a strong KRB team and the SCEGGS 2 (Year 4) team proved too strong for Ascham. Alessia Maksimovich had a strong game with her tackling and communication on the field. Well done to both Minkey/Hockey teams for their positive start to the term.

In Year 3 Touch Football, the girls have shown impressive skills in what is a new sport for many of them. Each of the teams has shown good passing and teamwork skills by utilising all players on the field. The teams have also made improvements with their defence by sliding and working together to stop the opposing team scoring tries. Carmen Draper, Aria Zhang and Romy Allen have been strong performers through their speed and ability to find the try line. Well done to all teams for their efforts so far.

Term 3 Co-Curricular Sport – Activity Selection

The activity selection form for Primary Term 3 Co-Curricular and Sport is now open in Clipboard. To support planning for all Term 3 sport programs, we ask that parents and carers complete the online form with their child by Friday 15 May.

Students will not be able to participate unless an activity selection has been submitted in Clipboard.

When enrolling your child in a sport, please ensure they are able to attend all scheduled training sessions and matches. Students should not be registered if they have existing commitments—such as club sport, dance, or other regular activities—that are likely to cause ongoing clashes.

SCEGGS expects parents and carers to request Saturday Sport Leave from Mrs Helen Dempsey in the same way leave is requested for a normal school day. Requests must be submitted at least one week prior to the date of absence.

Once an enrolment form has been submitted, it represents a commitment to all selected activities, and associated costs will be charged to your school account. Withdrawal fees will apply if a student withdraws during or after Week 1. Families should ensure they understand the commitment involved before submitting selections.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr Adrian Hammond or Ms Brittany Robbins. Please click the link to enrol in Term 3 Co Curricular Sport.

Please note: Charges for all activities will be placed on your school account.
