A Royal Honour for SCEGGS Cadets

A Royal Honour for SCEGGS Cadets

SCEGGS Darlinghurst was proudly represented at the King’s Birthday Parade at Government House. Central to the parade was a Royal Guard consisting of 96 high school aged Navy, Army and Air Force Cadets from around New South Wales. Commanding this tri-service Royal Guard was none other than SCEGGS’ very own Simone Turner in Year 12!

As part of this honourable role Simone also invited Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley to inspect the Royal Guard with her.

You can see Simone’s dignified and composed leadership here.

Congratulations Simone!

Poetry Writing Prizes and Opportunities

Poetry Writing Prizes and Opportunities

Sienna Weir Prize for Poetry

Sienna was a vibrant young woman with a passion for English, and in particular, poetry writing. She wrote and studied poetry from Primary School through to University and completed English at the highest level at SCEGGS, where she excelled in her HSC results and completed an Extension 2 Major Work. To celebrate her life, her family wanted to help foster a love of poetry in young writers and have sponsored a poetry workshop and Speech Night Prize aimed at students in Years 6 and 7.

This year we are excited to invite Australian poet, Jane Gibian, to SCEGGS to work with a small group of Year 6 and 7 students. The students will spend a day in Week 8 of Term 3 learning about poetry, writing and drafting their own pieces while also receiving feedback from Ms Gibian. Their work will be published by the school and considered for the Speech Night prize. Students are invited to apply for this opportunity by submitting one or two pieces of poetry to either Ms Cristi Wilsmore (Year 6 students) or Ms Jenny Bean (Year 7 students) at the email addresses below. Students may submit any pieces they have composed this year (including pieces they may have worked on in class or submitted for other competitions). All entries must be submitted electronically by Friday 28 June. We look forward to reading your work!

Dorothea Mackellar Writing Competition

It is one of Australia’s most prestigious poetry awards for young people – this year it is celebrating its 40th Anniversary! This year’s theme is “Listen, I have an idea.” The school has registered an account for this competition and your daughter will be able to check with her teacher about entering before the due date of Friday 30 June. Many Years 7 – 10 courses explore poetry in Term 2 and our 7 – 9 cohorts will have visits over the next few weeks from performance poetry group, Poetry in Action. Hopefully this will help to inspire our budding young poets! More information can be found at the website here.

Red Room’s Poetry Forest Competition

The competition encourages students to compose poems which have a positive message on climate change. This competition is open until Friday September 27. More information can be found here.

Striders

We would also like to share a photo from the Striders early morning run last week around the local area. This is where the joy of running all starts at the grass roots level. We run at a leisurely pace and everyone is welcome to join in the fun. Please speak with Ms Thompson if you would like to come and give Striders a try.

Sailing

Well done to Isobel Payne (Year 11) who competed at Newcastle in the first round of the Interclub Challenge. Created in 2001, the Interclub Challenge is a fleet racing series contested by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club and Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron with each Club hosting a stage of the series. Each stage consists of up to two teams from each Club, participating in a maximum of six races at each venue.

Newcastle Harbour is known for its shifty and quick-changing conditions, and the Sunday was no exception. The starting line was a competitive and aggressive environment for each race, with a mixture of fleet management and getting to the wind first. Isobel was the skipper of the team from Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron who won the day with four wins in six races, ahead of the team from CYCA and NCYC. Isobel credits her experienced team with superior boat handling for their success, but all were in new positions on somewhat unfamiliar boats. The team are looking forward to Round 2 later in June at the RSYS.

SCEGGS Arounds the Grounds

Lola Hush (Year 10) and Tessa McCarthy (Year 12) had the wonderful opportunity of training with Matilda superstar Ellie Carpenter during the week. At the conclusion of training, they then attended a Q & A session with Ellie and even managed a photo opportunity.  What a fabulous experience!  We look forward to watching to cheering on the Matildas in their bid for an Olympic medal in Paris.

Years K – 6 Athletics Carnival

The Years K – 6 Athletics carnival will be held at ES Marks Athletics Field, corner of Boronia Street and Anzac Parade, Kensington on Friday 21 June.

Year 3 to 6 events will begin at 9.00am. Kindergarten to Year 2 will begin at 11.30am. Years 3 to 6 will be leaving SCEGGS at 8.30am, while Years K to 2 will have classes as usual in the morning, leaving SCEGGS by bus at 10.30am. Kindergarten to Year 6 events will run concurrently. The carnival will conclude for all girls at 2.00pm. Girls travelling back to school by bus will return by 3.00pm for a carline pick up.

All sporting co-curricular activities will run as usual and After School Care will be open.

Girls are asked to wear full PE uniform to school, including sun hats. Girls may decorate their uniforms with House colours, for example: T-shirt, socks and/or ribbons in House colours and hats decorated with House colours. Girls catching public transport to and from school must wear full PE uniform, adding their House colours upon their arrival at school and returning to full PE uniform before going home in the afternoon.

Things to Take

Girls: Sunscreen, sun hats, track suits or School fleece, recess, lunch, drinks and snacks.

Parents and Friends: There are no canteen facilities available at the track, and unfortunately the field does not permit schools to have their own refreshment stalls. Parents are asked to bring their own refreshments with them.

Transport/Permission from Parents

All girls should arrive at school at the usual time and will be travelling by hired bus from SCEGGS to the track. Girls from Kindergarten to Year 6 may leave the track with their parents, or parents of friends, at the conclusion of the carnival, again only if permission from parents, in writing, has been received by class teachers before the day of the carnival.

Girls from Kindergarten to Year 6 will not be given permission to leave the field before the end of the carnival. At the end of the carnival, girls leaving the field with parents must inform their class teacher, in person and be marked off on the roll to signify they are leaving.

Inclement Weather

In the case of inclement weather, the carnival may be cancelled. In which case a normal school day will proceed. A decision will be made at 8.00am. This information will be available on Clipboard. Please ensure you have notifications enabled on Clipboard.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts

We are thrilled to announce that three Year 11 Students have been accepted into the National Art School HSC Intensive for 2024. Places are fiercely contested from applicants across the State. To have three students from SCEGGS accepted is an outstanding result.

The NAS HSC Intensive Studio Practice Program is a unique opportunity for Year 11 Visual Arts students to develop their skills in the ambience of the Art School setting.

This experience will encourage them to push the boundaries of their practice and gain new skills and an expanded awareness of techniques and processes.

We hope this experience will help shape each student’s vision for their practical work in the HSC.

Congratulations to Aurelia Cortese, Bianca Hardge and Kira Poinkin!

We encourage all in the SCEGGS community to visit a highly dynamic and engaging current exhibition by three young artists, two of whom are Old Girls. Lilli Strömland (Class of 2012) is an Art Assistant in the Visual Arts Department and has a thoroughly impressive exhibition schedule this year with back-to-back shows in 2024. Lilli holds a BFA in painting from the National Art School (2015) and has since gone on to be a recipient of multiple awards and prizes. These include being a finalist in the Brett Whiteley Scholarship (2020), the Portia Geach Memorial Award (2019), the Ravenswood Women’s Art Prize (2021, 2022, 2023) and the Salon de Refusés at S.H. Ervin Gallery (2019). In addition, she has participated in multiple solo and group shows and has work held in numerous private collections across Australia. Kate Lewis (Class of 2014) achieved a Masters in Contemporary Art from the VCA in 2022 from the University of Melbourne. Since graduation she has continued her journeys into the Australian bush and coast, painting smaller ‘en plein air’ works, as well as larger ‘alla prima’ (in one sitting) pieces back in her Melbourne studio – forever blurring lines between fiction and reality.

All But Mirrors group show by Lilli Strömland, Kate Lewis and Olivia Chin.

The show is currently on at AIRspace Projects, 10 Junction St Marrickville, and concludes Sunday June 23. Open hours are Thursday and Friday 5.00pm-8.00pm, Saturday and Sunday 10.00am-4.00pm.

Finally it is with immense pride that we share news that Thea Anamara Perkins (Class of 2009) is currently a finalist in this year’s Archibald Prize with a painting of her Mother, Hetti and also a finalist in the Wynne Prize with a work titled Atherreyurre. Atherreyurre in Mparntwe, is also known as the Telegraph Station in Alice Springs. This is where her grandfather Charles Perkins was born and where he rests, and where her great-grandmother Hetty Perkins worked.

Congratulations to all our current students and Old Girls who are flourishing in the art world!

This week’s banner is a class work from Term 1 by Aurelia Cortese (Year 11)

Musicale 2

The Great Hall was filled with the joyous sound of music during the Musicale 2 concert last Wednesday evening. Featuring special guest artist Katie Noonan, audiences were delighted to experience performances from Primary and Secondary choirs, a variety of ensembles, as well as the debut of several original songs from students. Here are some student reflections and images from what was a magical night!

Reflections from our students

The growing anticipation and buzz in the atmosphere, the encouraging hand-squeeze from friends sitting next to me and the excited, although somewhat nervous, grins we exchanged with each other as we found our places on the stage, was all part of what made this night so memorable and special. I was involved in a few items in Musicale 2, including Amati Strings, Secondary Jazz Combo, and the combined choir’s item. But my personal highlight of the night was our Electric Fuse performance (our Year 9 rock band). We performed ‘The Middle’, by Jimmy Eat World. Just before we began our song, there was a moment of stillness, and the rest of the world fell away – until it was just us, our band, playing for our friends and families. And then the moment broke- the first guitar note pierced through the air… and we were off! Drums kicked in and the vocals soon joined. Halfway through the verse, the bass guitar came in. The music kept on building and the tension rose – we reached the chorus at the peak. Standing up on the Great Hall stage, I knew the hours of preparation, from weekly lunchtime commitments to the last-minute morning rehearsals, had completely paid off. The feelings of exhilaration, of triumph at our performance rushed through me, and looking at the others in the band, I could tell they felt the same. Musicale 2 was an incredible experience and a night we would never forget.

Caitlin Cameron (Year 9)
Elective Music student, member of Amati Strings, Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, Glennie Percussion Ensemble, Secondary Jazz Combo, Year 9 Rock Band

Musicale 2 opened with an Acknowledgement of Country, The Promise, sung by Cantare, the Year 7 Choir, Choir and Madrigal Ensemble. Composed by Thomas-Peddell and Chance, this uplifting piece evoked messages of healing and encouraged us to use our voices in support of First Nations people. Holst Concert Band then performed Michael Brown’s arrangement of Coldplay’s global hits, written by Chris Martin and conducted by Mr Tierney. I enjoyed playing this collection with its expansive dynamics on my clarinet. Next, the Secondary Jazz Combo performed Listen Here by Harris. With a catchy melody, I had fun playing this tune on my electric guitar alongside my friends. We each took turns to improvise above the chord progression in a jazz style. Our Year 9 rock band, Electric Fuse, then played The Middle, by Jimmy Eat World, which is an upbeat and motivational anthem. Abby Tattersall, Lilla Brennan, Caitlin Cameron and I rehearse once a week without assistance, so we always feel a great sense of accomplishment after performances. Jamming together has become a highlight of my week! Finally, CVE, Choir and Madrigal Ensemble backed Katie Noonan’s Bluebird. It was a pleasure to support Katie’s rich vocals. Sharing the eclectic music we’d worked on this term was a rewarding experience.

Marnie Flett (Year 9)
Member of Madrigal Ensemble, Holst Wind Ensemble, Secondary Jazz Combo and Year 9 Rock Band.

It was incredible to witness Katie Noonan last Wednesday, live at SCEGGS, singing alongside the School’s choirs and ensembles. It was even more impressive to find out what an inspiring, down-to-earth person she was. She got the crowd laughing during breaks, casually filled in the space between performances, and sang with the ease of someone who knew every genre back to front and could bring the story of any song to life – and yet, she still had the humility to praise and encourage the next generation of singers. To have that level of authenticity, whether in singing or character, is the best kind of inspiration.

Having the chance to sing my own song, Inertia, in front of an audience (accompanied by the talented Ms Jones on piano, Mark Howard on bass, and Matt Moore on drums) was another incredible experience. Sharing songs can be daunting given how personal they are, but the environment of this concert was truly welcoming and supportive in a way I could not have expected – and I hope more SCEGGS girls share their songs (or start writing their own) because, whether recorded in your closet (great acoustics in there) or performed in front of a crowd, it is such a rewarding experience.

Lila Eversgerd (Year 11)
Singer-songwriter

Over the course of this term, I have been working on an original song worthy of potentially singing in the Term 2 Musicale. Within my writing process, I was inspired by many musicians including Katie Noonan, whose almost alternate and perhaps more complex songwriting style projects a more meaningful message to audiences, therefore deeply influencing my song. Taking after these musicians, I decided to write a song which followed a more complex and existential theme – about a meteor crashing into earth causing the end of human existence – to be exact. But through interrogating this superficial idea, I wanted the song to illuminate what it meant for it to be ‘the end’, and hence allow us to be grateful that we can continue living out our future which we have worked so hard to reach towards. Within the Musicale, Katie Noonan’s incredible stage presence and angelic voice was inspiring, and further encouraged not only myself in my performance, but each and every girl to courageously perform with love, consonance and pure joy. It was an honour to perform for both SCEGGS and Katie Noonan, and Musicale 2 could not have been more meaningful in inspiring SCEGGS girls on their musical journeys.

Featuring special guest artist Katie Noonan, audiences were delighted to experience performances from Primary and Secondary choirs, a variety of ensembles, as well as the debut of several original songs from students. Here are some student reflections and images from what was a magical night!

Reflections from our students from Year 5 & 6

The stage was set for a magical Musicale 2, Soloists, Choirs and Rock Bands waited with bated breath, eager for their chance to shine. At 6 O’clock my foot started tapping, and it couldn’t stop…the Musicale showcased SCEGGS’ Musical talent, and trust me there is a lot of talent to showcase. I loved Samantha Millen’s performance of her original song, Meteorite. She combined funny and thought-provoking lyrics with catchy flawless piano playing. I really felt what she meant in her lyrics, and it was funny at the same time. Additionally, Lila’s piece was really outstanding as she took the effort to write an original piece also. She showed lots of emotions while singing which was really nice”.

“The overall experience of Musicale 2 was enthralling…I wasn’t expecting the students to write their own music and that it would relate to me, especially Inertia….I loved Katie Noonan because she had such a spectacular voice and was always on point with everything. I especially loved her improvisations that worked with us”.

“The performance was amazing. It was life changing and extraordinary”.

“Katie Noonan adapted her voice to suit every genre and lifted each ensemble as she sang with them. The experience was new to me because it was so relaxed even though it was a formal concert. Katie was fun and relaxed and brought fun to the seriousness….The girls who wrote their own songs were amazing and they sounded ‘famous worthy’ and blew my socks off ”.

“I felt very confident as a performer because I knew the song and the lyrics well; …I remembered there were 52 other people singing with me and I didn’t feel so small…Year 6 did lots of practice and was ready for the concert. In Down By the Riverside, Katie sang her own improvisation using words and notes from the song to add a wonderful texture to our piece. The tempo and mood of the song was quite free and happy”.

“Amati strings played a really emotive and relaxing piece. It was calming and the melody was soothing with Katie Noonan singing. The textures changed as they started plucking, then picked up their bow and played together. Katie adapted her voice to all the different genres”.
