Let’s see who is awake today …. here’s a little Behind the Green Gate Quiz:

  • What is 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 ?
  • How many limbs does your average crab have?
  • What is the sum of the first three primes?
  • How many sleeps until the Festival on Forbes?

With just over a week to go, we are really looking forward to welcoming the School Community, together with friends, family, Old Girls and neighbours, to the Festival on Forbes on Sunday 23rd August, 10am-3pm.

The Festival on Forbes has always been an event run by our community for our community and beyond. So I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the parents who have given their time already!

Whether you have been busy planning, organising, donating, baking or collecting items for the day, it is the spirit of getting involved that really makes it a great day of food, fun and festivities for everyone to enjoy. So a huge thank you to those who have volunteered their time already – we all really appreciate it!

It is not too late to help out – even if just for an hour – with your Year Group stall, assisting on the P&F stalls or to help us all with the pack up on the day itself.

I wish all our SCEGGS families a lovely mid-term break on Monday … and I look forward to seeing you all at the Festival on Forbes on Sunday 23rd August!

Holly Gyton
Head of School

PS … if you noticed a pattern in your answers to all four questions above, then you are probably right!

PPS … no, 1 is not a prime number.

ICAS Competitions 2026

ICAS Competitions 2026

SCEGGS students will again participate in the annual ICAS competitions this term.

This year all students in Years 3 – 10 will participate in the English, Mathematics and Science competitions.

These competitions provide an excellent opportunity for all students to experience challenge, cultivate critical thinking skills, engage with different types of questions, and enables deeper engagement with these subjects beyond the curriculum taught in class. Additionally, participation in ICAS will provide further feedback to teachers, parents and students about each girl’s areas of strength and areas for further improvement.

There is a cost of $22 per test which will be recharged to your account.

ICAS tests will take place in class time at some point in the following weeks this term.

  • English during Week 4 (Monday 10 August – Friday 14 August)
  • Science during Week 5 (Tuesday 18 August – Friday 21 August)
  • Mathematics during Week 6 (Monday 24 August – Friday 28 August)

If you have any further questions about ICAS please feel free to contact either Cristi Wilsmore, Deputy Head, Teaching and Learning in the Primary School, or myself, Amy Webb, in the Secondary School.

We are thrilled to welcome Ruby back to SCEGGS to share her powerful journey from a successful career in fashion to now captivating young readers worldwide with her amazing novels.

Born and raised in Sydney, class of 2006 SCEGGS alumni Ruby Jean Cottle (Heery) studied Art History at COFA before embarking on a career in fashion and creative direction. During her time in roles in digital media, content creation and branding, plus a move to New York, Ruby was privately navigating undiagnosed endometriosis. After becoming a mother and having a clearer understanding of her body’s needs, Ruby decided to return to something she hadn’t done since high-school – writing.

Within a year of starting Ruby had signed a two-book-deal with Simon & Schuster Australia for her debut novel, Black River and its sequel, White Mountain – a coming of age take on the vampire genre set in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. Ruby’s storytelling explores the power of the natural world through a lens of romance, the paranormal, fantasy and sci-fi. The books have since sold into territories around the world, including the US, UK, Spain and France.

Please join us on Friday 18 September to hear more about Ruby’s inspiring experiences!

Reminders

There is no IPSHA sport or Year 3 Netball on Saturday 15 August due to the SCEGGS mid-term break. Saturday games will resume the following week, on Saturday 22 August.

Saturday Sport Review

A sunny Saturday greeted us for Round 3 of the IPSHA AFL and Touch Football competitions.

Our IPSHA Touch teams enjoyed a positive morning, securing five wins from their seven fixtures. SCEGGS 1 were too strong for St Catherine’s, coming away with an impressive 8–3 victory. Georgina Sharp (Year 6) made some strong runs, while Odette Cavanagh-Downs (Year 6) and Alyssa Kisirwani (Year 6) worked tirelessly through the middle. The team has been working hard on ‘driving’ the ball, focusing on moving it forward and gaining territory across the field.

Ms Thompson came straight from the airport to support the SCEGGS 3 team, and despite her best efforts, they unfortunately could not quite get over the line against Kambala.

SCEGGS 6 continued their unbeaten season with another strong performance, defeating Redlands 9–3. Congratulations to the team on another impressive result.

In IPSHA AFL, the team recorded a convincing win against Barker. Congratulations to the team on securing their first win of the season, and a special shout-out to Poppy Poyntz (Year 6) for scoring her first goal of the season. A fantastic achievement!

Well done to all our students for their enthusiasm, teamwork and commitment throughout Round 3. It was wonderful to see their hard work paying off on the field.

Their performances showed determination whilst competing alongside talented rhythmic gymnasts from several schools and clubs in Sydney. It was a great experience for all to grow in their competition experience.

Commitment to SCEGGS Co-Curricular Activities

Regular physical activity is an essential part of promoting positive health and well-being. Building relationships, fostering sportsmanship and teamwork is another element to co-curricular sport. We expect full commitment to all co-curricular sporting activities at SCEGGS. Students should be respectful of the impact that any absence has on team sport: their teammates, the opposition, the coach, and the reputation of the school.

Students are expected to be fully committed and attend all scheduled training sessions, trials and matches.

All absences must be communicated to the relevant department using the following guidelines:

  • Parents and guardians are to request written permission for leave from Ms Gyton (Secondary) or Mrs Dempsey (Primary) at least a week in advance from a sporting fixture or Saturday trial e.g. Year 12 student attending a University Open Day
  • If a student is sick on a Saturday, a parent/guardian must email or message the relevant coach and Sport Coordinator, or Director of Sport, prior to the match explaining the absence.
  • If a student is unable to attend a weekday training or trial session, the student, or a parent, is to notify the relevant Sports Co-ordinator as soon as possible on the day.
  • In case of a clash with school co-curricular activities e.g. Musicale, Sports Training, Duke of Ed Hike, the student is to liaise with both Co-ordinators to negotiate an acceptable outcome.

Failure to adhere to the above guidelines in the secondary school will result in:

  • A detention for any unexplained absences from a competition match.
  • A penalty point for any unexplained absence from training or trial sessions.
  • A penalty point for late arrival to more than 2 training sessions or matches in the same term.
  • If a student’s attendance is deemed unsatisfactory, they will be ineligible for house points and recognition on reports.
