Avoid Forbes Street on Monday 16 September!

Avoid Forbes Street on Monday 16 September!

Weather permitting, our builders will be pouring the second slab of Wilkinson House on Monday 16 September.

This will mean a concrete pump and many concrete trucks moving up and down Forbes Street throughout the day. Forbes Street will remain open and our builders will have an expanded traffic control team on site directing traffic movements around the construction site.

We encourage all staff and students (if old enough to do so safely) to take public transport on Monday or be dropped safely nearby and walk the last little way to school.

If you do drive into Forbes Street on Monday, please expect delays and follow the directions of the traffic control staff at all times.

Year 9 Camp

Year 9 Camp

Bourke Street becomes a mad scramble as 108 Year 9 girls board the two buses bound for Glenworth Valley. As the scenery changes from city streets to rolling hills, stories are shared, lollies are scoffed, and memories are made. At 10am, we reached our campsite for the night. We are sorted into seven groups, we meet our group leaders, we set up tents. Lunch is a furious frenzy of salad wraps and leftover bus trip stashes. We are welcomed to the site by Traditional Owners, who tell us stories of the past, and advice for the future. Then the activities begin – first up a three-hour hike to the top of Mount Olive. The sun beats down hard on our faces and sweat drips through cotton as we push ourselves further, higher. Several ant bites and a swollen ankle later, we reach the top. We write letters to our Year 12 selves, trying to capture exactly how we felt in that moment. It will definitely be interesting to read them back in three years’ time…

That night, we gathered ceremonially around the Trangias, cooking our dinner and telling stories of the day. We roll into bed, thoroughly exhausted from the day’s efforts. Not exhausted enough, though…the next morning we crawled out of tents, weary from lack of sleep (two words-bird noises) and ate our breakfast in companiable silence. By 8am, we had set off once again, chatting and laughing in the sun as we made our way to the river. Canoes are dragged to the river’s edge as we climb aboard, all too carefully as to not fall in. We paddle until our arms ache, stopping for a snack and racing back to the shore. In the afternoon, the events that occur will now be formally known as The Mountain Biking Expedition From Hell. We stumble back to the campsite, our knees bruised and bloody, well and truly worn out. We play cards, eat our dinner and gather around the bonfire. At 9pm we are ushered into our tents. We crash, eager to sleep away the day’s endeavours.

In the morning, we painstakingly collapse our tents, shove our sleeping bags into their covers (do they shrink overnight? Why are they always so hard to get back in the bag?) and set off to our final activity of abseiling. Though many pushed themselves (literally) and reached the bottom of the cliff, I was quite content with being everyone’s photographer after seeing the drop. On the way back from abseiling, we froze in shock as a stampede of horses began running towards us. Despite being told to be quiet and stay still, the adrenaline of it all was too much and we ran into the bushes, screaming in fear. Eventually the horses lost interest in us, realising that we were merely a group of overly terrified private school girls and not, in fact, of any appeal to them. When we finally reached the campsite, we were all grateful for the opportunity to dip our feet in a nearby river, ridding ourselves of the past three days of mud. Before we knew it, everyone was clambering onto the buses once again, drained and ready for a shower.

Many thanks to Ms Bloomfield for making this all happen – it was quite an eventful three days and none of these stories could have been without your amazing organising of our camp!

Cambodia International Immersion 2025

Cambodia International Immersion 2025

When: Wednesday 18 September at 6pm

Where: SCEGGS Lecture Theatre

SCEGGS has a proud tradition of running immersion trips for students in Year 9 to Year 11. Our latest trip, in the upcoming October school holidays, is a domestic trip to remote Indigenous communities around Cape York. In the past, students have also had the opportunity to travel overseas to Uganda originally and then to Cambodia.

We are pleased to share the news that SCEGGS will again work with Habitat for Humanity in 2025 and travel to Cambodia. The immersion is planned for the October 2025 school holidays. SCEGGS students and staff will work with Habitat for Humanity on building homes for local communities in Cambodia. This service project provides an opportunity for students in Years 10 and 11 in 2025 to provide hands-on construction support to build homes for vulnerable families in the Siem Reap area.

Cambodia Immersion 2019

If you are interested in finding out more about this wonderful opportunity, please join us in the Lecture Theatre on Wednesday 18 September from 6pm to 7pm.

Science Week at SCEGGS

Science Week at SCEGGS

Wow! What a week we had. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm for Science amongst so many of our students!

Forensics

On Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtimes, students volunteered to help solve the forensics case of “Who Stole Beryl?” (NB – Beryl is Mr Searl’s very elegant dog). Students investigated a number of clues such as footprints, fingerprints, soil pH and type, information from a datalogger, and a series of notes on the whereabouts of various Science Staff Members on the day the crime was committed.

Mr Searl was very thankful for the 75 students who provided forensic assistance in the case. Due to the students’ clever analysis of the clues, it was discovered that Dr Guss had stolen Beryl. However, in his interview, he stated that it was a miscommunication, and he only took Beryl for some experiments into Static Electricity to see if dog hair would stand on-end better than human hair.

The award for the best team name went to:

Bumbling Beryls Year 11
  • Savannah Wechgelaer-Eyssens
  • Isabella Anastasiou
  • Stella Argyrides

The 3 runners up teams that both correctly identified Dr Guss and provided a sound analysis of the clues were:

Beryl’s Finders Year 7
  • Bonnie Turnbull
  • Annabelle Miller
  • Lucia Tam
  • Dion Tziortzis
  • Anastasia Botros
  • Milla Serfontein
Beryl Bonanza Year 10
  • Isabelle Rath-Mazzochi
  • Jess Weatherall
  • Amelie Hewitt-Taylor
  • Florence Furness
  • Alathea Hutley
  • Melody Li
Capybaras Year 10
  • Isabella Lyndon
  • Olivia Hickey
  • Aiyana McKinley-Rowe
  • Emily O’Shea

The winning team with excellent analysis of the evidence was:

Beryl’s Bandits Year 11
  • Emma Hawkins
  • Alexandra Tavendale
  • Francesca Emblin
  • Alicia Singh
  • Evie Vigil

Inter-House Science Competition

The annual Inter-House Science Competition was held recently. The Science Leaders and Vice-Leaders MC’d the event beautifully. After an Acknowledgement of Country, teams in the competition started completing a puzzle to match animals with their collective name and the name of their young. Did you know that a platypus’ baby is called a puggle? And a group of platypuses is called a paddle? While the puzzle was completed, audience members completed “heads or tails” questions, such as “How many teeth does an adult human have?” and “What is the study of mushrooms called?”.

After this, teams competed in a round of Science Trivia, followed by the most important, final event – The Science Set-Up. One person at a time from each team needed to collect a piece of science equipment and set up a particular arrangement of equipment (e.g. Bunsen burner, tripod, bosshead and clamp etc). The fastest team to safely set up their equipment won. This resulted in much laughter and excitement, and the Year 7 students are particularly commended for putting their newly learnt science skills to the test.

Congratulations to Docker (1st Place), Christian (2nd Place) and Beck (3rd Place).

Giant Bubble Experiment

As our final celebration of Science Week, students made hypotheses as to the longest bubble that could be created. Students practiced pulling bubbles from a giant paddling pool and managed to create a 7 metre long bubble. Congratulations to Olivia Phillips (Year 8) for creating the longest bubble, and to Gemma Munro (Year 8) for creating the best Human inside a Bubble.

Lastly, a big thank you to the Science Leaders, Vice-Science Leaders and all the Science Department for their help in preparing and conducting such wonderful experiences for our students. It is hoped that such memorable experiences will inspire our students to even greater enjoyment of Science at SCEGGS.

Debating

Debating

Our Year 11 Seniors and Year 9 Juniors are Archdale Champions!

On Tuesday our Year 8A team, Junior team (consisting of Year 9s) and Senior team (consisting of Year 11s) competed in the Archdale Grand Final at Abbotsleigh. It was wonderful to have such a strong SCEGGS contingent at the Final – SCEGGS was one of two schools to have three teams in the Grand Final, and we came 2nd in the overall Archdale Shield.

Our Year 8A team were runners-up in a split decision after an extremely high quality debate. They were on the affirmative of the topic “that we should abolish formal student leadership positions.” The team consisted of: Flora Balagna, Josephine Hatherall, Anna Luo, and Marina Roberts. This Year 8 team has had a remarkable first two years of high-school debating, having made the Archdale Grand Final also in Year 7, and having won the ISDA Grand Final earlier this year. They are extraordinarily talented, and it is a privilege to witness their dedication to debating and care for each other.

Our Junior team won their Grand Final debate, making them Champions of their division. They were affirmative on the topic “that we regret the notion of a ‘dream job’.” The team consisted of Year 9 Daisy Carson, Ava Dua, Holly Johnston, Pascale Otton, and Amelia Wilcsek. It has been wonderful to watch this team develop and excel over the season, and in their final debate they clearly demonstrated the high standard of debating they are now capable of.

Our Senior team were also Champions of their division. They were affirmative on the topic “that, as a feminist parent, we would send our daughter to an all-girls school rather than a comparable co-ed school.” The Senior division of Archdale includes both Year 11 and Year 12 debaters, so it was particularly impressive for our team of Year 11s to win this division. SCEGGS also won this division last year, so it is exciting to see our consistency in developing competitive senior teams. This year of debaters has been notable for their enthusiasm and success from when they first started inter-school debating in Year 6, and their win on Tuesday was very well-deserved. It is not often that we see a dependable team of eight rotate and support each other throughout a debating season, and this team was the largest in attendance on Tuesday. It was a pleasure to watch their debate and to see their heart-warming celebrations.

The team consisted of Year 11 Gabrielle Cheung, Isabella Collister Estevez, Katharine Conaglen, Bianca Hardge, Simran Murphy, Madeleine Soo, Georgia Tsangaris, and Celia Watson.

Mondovision 2024

Mondovision 2024

Despite the recent flurry of school activities, you might not expect students to find time for yet another school event. However, the diverse performances and the passion of the participants made it clear that there’s always room to captivate an audience with multilingual renditions of popular songs. Mondovision provides a platform for students studying Chinese, French, Latin, Japanese or Spanish as well as those eager to showcase other languages they speak. Once again, this year featured a wide range of participants, from Year 7 students performing in French to Year 12 students singing in Chinese, French and Japanese. The performers deserve praise for their creativity and the vibrant energy they brought to the stage. It was evident they thoroughly enjoyed singing in these languages.

This year, the teachers got in on the action as well during the judging break. The Music Department’s stunning rendition of “Nessun Dorma!” received a standing ovation, with a special shout-out to Ms Holmes for her impressive operatic skills. We were also treated to some singing and comedic flair from our very own ABBA (Ms Kidston, Ms Saxton, Mr Eyers and Mr Hanson), performing “Chiquitita” in Spanish! The talent at Mondovision truly knows no bounds.

A big thank you goes to Ms Wymer, Ms Axford, and Mr Hainsworth for their expert judging. Their task wasn’t easy, but they awarded first place to the fantastic Year 12 group of students who performed “Aux Champs-Elysées” in French. Congratulations to Isabelle Barlow, Teagan Barrack, Gabrielle Cunningham, Sybilla Hooke, Gabrielle Papas, Ilana Patkar, Julia Richards, Isabella Stern, Bella Talib, Lucy Thomsen and Alexia Yuile for standing out with excellent French pronunciation, joyful singing and fun choreography!

Thank you to everyone who auditioned and performed—we loved all your acts and hope to see many of you again next year. Special thanks to Year 11 Camille McCarthy and Julia Piazza for being wonderful hosts!

2024 Latin Reading Competitions

2024 Latin Reading Competitions

Students in Year 9 and 10 recently competed in the Latin Reading Competitions for their year groups, held at the University of Sydney and St Ignatius’ College, Riverview.

The purpose of the competitions is to hear Latin read aloud as it was back in the courtrooms and poetry recitations of Ancient Rome. Students compete in solo verse, solo prose and group verse recitations and are judged on their accuracy of pronunciation as well as their ability to bring out the meaning and emotion of a passage. Year 10 students are also given an unseen passage which they must read aloud after only 10 minutes preparation time.

The nights are a lot of fun, with students able to meet other Latin students from schools around Sydney and participate in the singing of Latin songs such as the ‘hoci poci’.

SCEGGS achieved wonderful results in both competitions.

  • Bridget Murray placed first overall in the Year 10 competition.
  • Pascale Otton placed second in the solo verse for Year 9.
  • Jess Weatherall of Year 10 and Yang Zhou of Year 9 were both selected to represent SCEGGS in the finals and did a wonderful job.

The group verse is the hardest section, with all students required to memorise the passage for recitation and speak as one cohesive group. Unfortunately our Year 9 SCEGGS group was too small to be considered for the judging, but they spoke wonderfully and with excellent cohesion.

Congratulations to Emilia Laban (Year 5) who was selected to play for NSW in the NSW vs Queensland Super 10s Tennis State of Origin competition at Sawtell last weekend. Emilia had a great time representing NSW and competed in singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions. She came away with a convincing win in her singles match against her Queensland opposite number (6-1,6-2) and won her mixed doubles match. Queensland just got the win overall this year, but it was an excellent experience for Emilia. What a fantastic effort!

Year 3 Minkey and IPSHA AFL and Touch Football

It is hard to believe that Year 3 Minkey and IPSHA AFL and Touch Football competitions have only one more round to play. It has been great seeing the improvements made across each of the teams in their respective sports.

On Saturday, the Year 4 teams led the charge in IPSHA Touch, coming away with two wins. The Year 5 team played without reserves against a full strength Kambala team in warm conditions. The team showed excellent perseverance and kept competing until the final whistle, including a diving effort from Josephine Smith (Year 5) to finish the game which will go down as a one of the highlights of the season!

Upcoming Dates:
Saturday 14 September Final Round of Year 3 Minkey competition at Ascham (Week 8)
Saturday 14 September Final Round of IPSHA AFL and Touch Round 5 (Week 8)
Tuesday 17 September IPSHA Basketball and Year 3 Football Trials commence (Week 9)

A reminder, if your daughter cannot attend a Saturday match due to another commitment, you must contact Mrs Dempsey to request permission for leave. This request must be made at least one week prior to the date being requested.

Visual Arts

Sydney Contemporary opened with a typically vibrant and exciting evening at Carriageworks in Redfern last week.

Sydney Contemporary is Australasia’s premier art fair – the largest and most diverse gathering of leading contemporary art galleries in the region and we were thrilled to reconnect with so many SCEGGS Old Girls in the crowd as leading arts professionals and on the walls as exhibitors.

Here are some of our past students we chatted to during the evening.

India Ford (Class of 2017) Fair Manager
Eliza Gosse (Class of 2012) exhibiting with Olsen Gallery
Thea Anamara Perkins (Class of 2009) exhibiting with NSmith Gallery
Prue Stent and Honey Long (Class of 2011) exhibiting with ARC One Gallery
Sophia Mavris (Class of 2017) VIP Relations Team
Saskia McCarthy (Class of 2019) Gallery Assistant at MContemporary
Isobel Parker Philip (Class of 2007) Deputy Director of the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra

…and too many Old Girls to name in the audience as discerning viewers and buyers!

We love seeing how a SCEGGS Art Education informs such diverse pathways to achieve success in the art world.

And speaking of spectacular evenings we are thrilled to share some images from the Year 12 Visual Arts HSC Exhibition that was on show during Week 6 of this term. This event is a highlight of the HSC calendar, when senior SCEGGS girls get to celebrate their creative achievements, reflecting on their problem solving, technical skills and sophisticated conceptual investigation. The calibre of work, the pride, laughter and love in the room was amazing!

Secondary and Primary Tournament of Minds

Secondary and Primary Tournament of Minds

Tournament of Minds (TOM) is a problem-solving program for teams of students from both primary and secondary years. Tournament of Minds aims to enhance the potential of young people by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment. Congratulations to both our Secondary and Primary teams who represented SCEGGS.  Below are their reflections.

Secondary

On Sunday 8 September six teams from SCEGGS Darlinghurst competed in the Secondary Division at Randwick Boys High School. Their presentations were the culmination of six weeks of positive teamwork, creativity and ingenuity.  This year, the Social Sciences teams explored the beneficial impacts of the spirit of TOM being released to the world. The STEM team devised an innovative device to mitigate the effects of plastic pollution in water bodies. The ARTS team creatively retold a key moment in the life story of our very own Mr Lee Linsday.

Well done to everyone involved in TOM this year. All SCEGGS entries in the Sydney East Regional Competition were of a very high standard, with special congratulations going to the following teams on gaining awards:

Team 1 gained the Merit Prize in the Social Sciences Challenge, Secondary Division
Team 4 gained the Merit Prize in the Language Literature Challenge, Secondary Division
Team 2 gained Tournament Honours in the STEM Challenge, Secondary Division
Team 6 gained First Place in the Arts Challenge, Secondary Division

Team 6 will now go on to compete in the NSW State Finals, to be held on Sunday September 22 at the University of New South Wales, Kensington Campus. We wish them all the very best. Thank you to the SCEGGS staff who acted as Team Facilitators, supporting the six teams that entered this year’s tournament.

Tournament of Minds Facilitators (Secondary)

Primary

We are very proud of our Year 5 and 6 students who participated in the Regional Finals of the Tournament of Minds Competition on Sunday 8 September at Randwick Boys High School. Primary School entered a team in each of the Language Literature, STEM and Arts disciplines. Each team worked hard to develop their Long-Term Challenge over six weeks and performed admirably on the day to present their Long-Term Challenge solution as well as compete in the unseen Spontaneous Challenge.

The STEM Challenge was titled, Not So Fantastic Plastic. The team was required to create an innovative device to remove or mitigate a specific type of plastic pollution. As part of the presentation, the girls had to demonstrate their working prototype and present a scaled drawing of the device. The STEM Team, consisting of Year 6 Matilda Reuss, Mackenzie Jothy, Chloe Park, Sarah Ibrahim, Mia Castro, Audrey Park and Susanna Brown, worked to address the problem of plastic pollution derived from medical waste with their creation of the Dewy Dexter 3610 – a machine that uses geothermal energy to melt plastic to create chairs that can be used in medical facilities. The girls approached this challenge with persistence and resilience, working well as a team and being awarded with a Merit Prize on the day.

Telling stories through the arts is a timeless way for people to share their experiences, passing wisdom and knowledge from one generation to another. The Arts Challenge required students to choose a living local person from their community to interview and discover their stories. The Arts Team, consisting of Year 6 Viola Heery, Alexandra Millin, Eve Parker, Annabelle Dempsey, Serafina Kwok and Holly Shennan, interviewed Aunty Viv and learnt much about her early life. The girls then needed to bring Aunty Viv’s story to life through storytelling forms including music, dance and visual arts. It was fabulous to see the girls bring a diverse range of skills together to perform confidently on the day. The team was awarded a Merit Prize on the day for their efforts.

The Language Literature task required students to firstly select a fictional character from literature. They were then challenged to prepare to launch a biography for this character. However, at the 11th hour, the character comes back from the past and is surprised to discover that the team has written a biography about them and something in the biography isn’t right! The Language Literature Team, consisting of Year 5 Eva Geha, Aleisha Yeung, Olivia Yeo, Annabel Ling, Eliana Raissis, Aisling Blackburn and Minttu Guss, chose to share the biography of Dr Suess’, Lorax. However, on his return from the past, the team were amazed to discover that the Lorax is not one person as we have all incorrectly assumed…there are, in fact, multiple Loraxes! In rewriting the history books with their creative performance, the Language Literature Team worked with determination to also be awarded with a Merit prize on the day.

Congratulations to all the Primary girls who participated in the Tournament of Minds Competition.

Cat Empire Project

Last week 49 of our secondary school choristers enjoyed the exciting opportunity to be back up singers for iconic Australian band The Cat Empire. This project saw them performing last Friday and Saturday night at a sold out Sydney Opera House accompanied by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. These students loved the chance to work with professional musicians and be an important part of a show that included charismatic flamenco dancers, latin brass, salsa piano, Spanish flamenco guitar, a spectacular light show and ended with the audience and choir standing up and dancing infectiously. It was a true choral rockstar experience that our students will never forget!

2025 Music Tour

Thank you to everyone who has paid the deposit for the 2025 Music Tour. Fresh Fruit Friday

Fresh Fruit Friday

Get excited! Fresh Fruit Friday has a drive coming up on Friday 20 September (Week 9). This is an ongoing initiative led by the SRC, providing fresh fruit and vegetables to local charities.

We have been thrilled with the response from our community to this initiative over the past year and are looking forward to supporting this great cause again!

Students are asked to bring fresh fruit and vegetables to the Jacaranda Gate on Friday, Week 9. It’s an easy, small gesture, but one that will be deeply appreciated and enjoyed.
