Use Public Transport … and Tap On and Off every time!

We strongly encourage SCEGGS students to use public transport to travel to and from school when they are old enough to do so safely!

Why? Public transport is a greener option, reduces traffic, congestion and pollution, and builds independence in our students. I think all SCEGGS families want their daughter to grow up to be a strong, independent, resilient adult who can safely travel the world in the future if she chooses to do so … and that means we have to develop these skills of independence while she is still at school. (And secretly, I am yet to meet a SCEGGS parent who also wouldn’t like a little more time back in their own week!)

So if your daughter is in the Secondary School and you are still driving her to and from school every day, I encourage you to ask whether there is another afternoon each week where she could safely make her own way home on public transport …?

When using public transport, students must make sure that they:

  • have a valid Opal card for travelling to and from school each day.
  • Tap On and Off every time they use a bus, train or ferry service.

It is an important condition of the Student Code of Conduct when travelling that students must Tap On and Off with their School Opal Card or Child/Youth Opal Card every time when using public transport. Data from the Opal Network, particularly about student travel patterns, is a key piece of information in determining school bus routes – timing, frequency and the routes themselves. Tapping On and Off demonstrates how frequently all bus routes are used by SCEGGS students, so please make sure your children Tap On and Off every time so that this data is accurate.

If your child’s School Opal Card has expired or been damaged, lost or stolen, please visit www.transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply  to reapply.

So here is the challenge … which extra morning or afternoon can your daughter make her own way to and from school next term? Now is the time to have the conversation with her to plant the seed for a new arrangement next term, and help establish a new greener and more independent routine in Term 3!

Air Force Cadets

Air Force Cadets

Our Air Force Cadets in 306 Squadron have been busy, particularly on ANZAC Day when many of them marched and performed official duties, such as Florence Furness (Year 12) performing the role of Drum Major, around Sydney.

The weekly parades continue each Friday and now include a termly parade at SCEGGS.  Last Friday was one such parade where we welcomed 306SQN onto campus where they paraded on the Top Court and trained using a variety of our facilities.

2026 National Songwriting Competition

The Australian Children’s Music Foundation’s 23rd annual National Songwriting Competition is now open for entries. The Competition is aimed at fostering creativity, self-expression and nurturing the next generation of songwriters. This year’s competition is the biggest yet, with a prize pool valued at over $30,000.

ACMF believes every child, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity to experience the transformative power of music. The National Songwriting Competition is free to enter for all school-aged children from Kindergarten to Year 12.

“Songwriting is a highly creative process,” says Don Spencer ACMF Founder and CEO. “This competition provides a unique opportunity for them to find their voice, build confidence and discover the joy of music.”

Kindergarten Learning String Instruments at School

Kindergarten students are eligible to enrol to have instrumental lessons at school from the beginning of next term! Last week the Kindy class was treated to performances demonstrating string instruments by Amelia Chow (Year 6) violinist, Monica Zhang (Year 5) violist and Bronte Lusted (Year 5) cellist. These talented musicians were able to show the younger students how each instrument sounded and share their enthusiasm and love of music. Information has been sent to Kindy parents this week about enrolling for violin, viola or cello lessons at school. Once the Kindy students have had a few terms of tuition, they will be invited to join a string ensemble. Students enjoy playing together very much, both musically and socially.

We love hearing about ways our musicians are involved in music-making outside of school. Please send details to Heidi Jones.

Clipboard

All co-curricular music ensemble schedules are now available on Clipboard. For any issues with Clipboard set-up, contact our Music Administrator.
