Today the SCEGGS community comes together to mark R U OK? Day, as do many other organisations around Australia. This national day serves as a timely reminder of the significant impact a simple, heartfelt conversation can have.

Our Year 9 students have taken the lead in organising several activities in the Secondary School today, reminding us all that checking in on those around us is an everyday practice, not just an annual event. Whether chatting on the lawn, walking from class to a co-curricular activity, or catching up during recess, our girls are reflecting on what it truly means to listen without judgment and extend genuine care to one another.

In addition, I am very proud of some of our Year 12 students, The Ducks, who are completing an Out of the Shadows walk on Sunday at Centennial Park to help raise funds for Lifeline. Through connection, compassion and hope, the aim of these walks is for people to unite, reflect and to raise awareness. Go the Ducks!

We also encourage all families to carry this spirit of open conversation at home. As the national R U OK? Day initiative reminds us:

if someone’s on your mind, trust your instinct and start a conversation. If you’re thinking it, Ask R U OK? Any Day because what people value most is trust, a sense of genuine care, and someone who really listens to them, without judgement.

Summer Uniform Now Available

“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” The Summer Uniform is now for sale in The School Shop!

All students K-12 will wear summer uniform from the beginning of Term 4.

Summer uniform items may also be ordered via the Flexischools app.

There may be many students who have lost clothing, water bottles, or lunchboxes during the term. Author Helen Keller said, “what we have enjoyed deeply we can never lose”, because we have accumulated a large collection of lost property items from Term 3. Secondary students are encouraged to collect these items from us at the School Shop by the end of term. In the final week of term, any un-named, non-uniform items will be displayed outside the School Shop for students to claim.

Please note: the School Shop closes on Friday, 25 September and will re-open on Monday, 12 October.

Parent Satisfaction Survey – still time to complete

Thank you to all of those parents who have already had a chance to complete the Parent Satisfaction Survey currently being undertaken by Ipsos.

The survey will be open until 18 September and we would genuinely like to hear from all families in the 2026 wave of this survey!

You all have individual experiences of the School and so all have an important part to play in helping us to understand what is working well from your point of view, and what we might need to keep working on. So all views and ideas will all be very gratefully received. The overall results of this survey will continue to provide input into the planning process for the school moving forward, and a report of the results will be provided to all current parents via the Parent Portal when the results are in.

When Voices Come Alive – The Stage 2 Oracy Showcase

The Stage 2 Oracy Showcase took place on Monday, 7 September, providing an opportunity for our Year 3 and 4 girls to showcase their developing oracy skills and enjoyment of performance.

Throughout the term, the girls have worked with great commitment to prepare their Reader’s Theatre. Their hard work was certainly evident on the day, with the finalists using their voices effectively to bring their stories to life. They worked closely as teams, listening and responding to one another to create well-timed and engaging performances.

The girls also made thoughtful use of actions, movement and sound to enhance meaning. Most importantly, they demonstrated a strong awareness of their audience, capturing attention and entertaining the crowd.

Congratulations to all of Stage 2 for their enthusiasm, effort and engagement throughout the process. A big thank you must also be extended to our Stage 2 teachers, Ms Felicity Permezel, Ms Tammy Jacobson, Ms Kate Jordan-Watt and Ms Rachel Maclachlan for the time and preparation that went into supporting the girls and bringing the showcase together.

A special commendation goes to our Showcase Winners and Highly Commended performers, whose outstanding Reader’s Theatres were recognised by our judges.

A special mention must also be given to our wonderful Year 4 hosts, Isabelle Chirakis, Hazel Costello, Ani Krilis, and Shanaya Purkayastha. They guided the audience through the showcase confidently and ensured the event ran smoothly from beginning to end.

We are very proud of the way our girls embraced the opportunity to use their voices, perform with confidence and support one another as a team. We can’t wait for next year’s Stage 2 Oracy Showcase!

Year 6 Maths Cup

Nine Year 6 girls recently extended their mathematical thinking at the Maths Cup, held at Amity College on Wednesday, 2 September. Representing SCEGGS were Alice Chandler, Anastasia Wong, Ava Grange, Defne Aslan, Eva Lobato Williams, Fiona Wu, Ivy Zhang, Madeleine Chirakis and Olivia Tan.

The Maths Cup was an exciting enrichment opportunity for the girls to apply their mathematical knowledge in unfamiliar and increasingly challenging contexts. Working in teams of three, they were encouraged to think flexibly, reason strategically and draw on a range of problem-solving skills. Challenges included ‘Find the Target Number’, a multiple-choice mathematics test and a series of logic puzzles.

The competition was fierce, with 102 teams participating. Ava, Defne and Ivy performed particularly strongly in the opening rounds, earning a place in the semi-finals. Here, the level of challenge increased as they worked collaboratively to solve complex word problems, successfully securing their place among the finalists.

With only one minute to solve each problem in the final round, the girls were extended even further, needing to think quickly and accurately under considerable pressure. Ava, Defne and Ivy rose to the challenge, finishing an impressive 4th overall – a wonderful achievement in such a competitive field.

All nine girls are congratulated on the way they represented SCEGGS throughout the day. Opportunities such as the Maths Cup allow our girls to be challenged beyond their everyday classroom experiences, deepen their mathematical thinking and engage with other like-minded students who share their enthusiasm for Mathematics. The girls embraced this challenge with enthusiasm and determination, supporting one another as teammates and demonstrating great perseverance throughout the day.

Primary SRC

In Week 6, the Primary School Student Representatives demonstrated wonderful leadership and collaboration skills whilst organising and facilitating a lunchtime event to support the upcoming Secondary School Immersion to Cape York. The initiative provided an opportunity for the Primary SRC to contribute towards the Secondary girls’ efforts to support the communities they will be visiting during their time on Country, whilst also showing their support for this wider school initiative.

In the weeks leading up to the event, the girls worked collaboratively to plan a range of lunchtime stalls and experiences for the Primary School. They considered where each stall would be best located, which activities would be most appealing to students, and how they could create experiences that were enjoyable, sustainable and manageable to run. The girls developed a wonderful range of activities, including Cornhole, Sensory Boxes, Rock Painting and ‘Guess the Teacher as a Baby’.

It was wonderful to see the girls take ownership on the day, confidently leading their stalls, welcoming students and working together to ensure everything ran smoothly. The team were thrilled to raise an incredible $400, which will contribute towards supporting the communities that will be visited as part of the Cape York Immersion Trip.

We are very proud of the way the girls identified an opportunity to contribute to the Immersion and turn their ideas into meaningful action. We look forward to continuing to broaden their leadership skills and create further opportunities for the girls to represent student voice throughout the remainder of the year.

Book Week & Parade 2026

It was wonderful to see the sun shining brightly over the Primary Playground for our annual Book Week Parade! The aim of Book Week is to celebrate Australian children’s literature, honour local authors and illustrators, and nurture a lifelong love of reading and storytelling.

In the lead-up to Book Week, many girls have been exploring the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s (CBCA) shortlisted titles during their weekly library lessons. The full 2026 CBCA shortlist can be viewed here. Classes have been critiquing this quality literature and voting on their favourite titles. Students’ love of literature is palpable, and this year they have been particularly fond of Run by Sarah Armstrong in the Younger Readers category, Dear Broccoli by Jo Dabrowski and Cate James in the Picture Book category, and Derek by Anne Donaldson in the Early Childhood category.

This year’s Book Week theme, Symphony of Stories, reminds us that every story has its own unique voice and that, together, stories create a wonderful celebration of imagination, creativity and connection. Our very own symphony of stories at the Book Parade included students dressed as their favourite book characters, including Ella from The Ella Diaries, Friday Barnes, Nanny Piggins, Clementine Rose, Ella from Ella at Eden, Harry Potter and Alice from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland — along with many more wonderful costumes and literary favourites.

It was lovely to have student representatives from every year level take on a speaking role during the occasion. Our Year 6 students, Maya Clark, Ella Hyland, Kaylee Wang, Ava Grange and Zoe Hepple, played an important role in the event, with Maya and Ella acting as our student MCs, Kaylee and Ava managing the music, and Zoe presenting the Acknowledgement of Country. Special thanks to Nikita Ng (Kindergarten), Arabella Wilson (Year 1), Alana Swamy (Year 2), Martha Andrews (Year 3), Ada Murphy Wood (Year 3), Lily Lee (Year 4), Emily Button-Kwan (Year 4), Scarlett Africh-Bechara (Year 4) and Charlie Whitfield (Year 5) for speaking so confidently about their most treasured books and book character costumes.

A highlight of this year’s event was the book-themed musical item, performed by students from Kindergarten to Year 4. The girls sang and performed actions to When You Open a Book by Tom Kirkham and Matthew Crossley, creating a joyful celebration of the power of books and music.

The grand finale featured our Year 6 Dr Seuss inspired creations, followed by our teachers, many of whom embraced the theme by dressing as favourites from the Little Miss and Mr Men series.

It gave me great pleasure to announce the winning classes for the 2026 Premier’s Reading Challenge, with both 4P and 4J achieving a wonderful 100% participation rate. It was an outstanding achievement to have 251 of our 280 Primary students complete the Challenge.

Thank you to everyone who helped make our Book Week Parade such a joyful celebration of books, reading, creativity and community. It was incredible to see the primary school come together to celebrate the stories that inspire us all.

Snowsports

Congratulations to the 15 students who competed at the Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships at Perisher last week. This event brought together the best competitors in Australia who had qualified through regional and state championships.  It was a difficult season with limited snow and last week also added heavy rain and strong wind to the mix.

A shout out to Bowie Whittle and Alyssa Rayment who competed in the Division 2 Skier Cross event in heavy rain and the worst racing conditions I have ever witnessed on Saturday morning. The weather eventually forced the postponement of the Division 3 race until the Sunday due to the poor conditions and rising river levels!

Another mention goes to our Year 10 competitors who competed and then raced back in time for the Year 10 Social in the evening – Gemma Shennan, Sofia White and Cleo Harrington. This was SCEGGS commitment and spirit at its finest!

A special thank you goes to all of our parents who make the Snowsports season possible. We are grateful for your dedication in driving the competitors backwards and forward to the ski fields and performing team manager roles and course official duties. Without your support these events would not be able to take place. I hope you all have some relaxing downtime after a brutal winter.

Congratulations to Sofea Davey who competed in the J125 Sawtell Seaside Junior which is an annual event held at the end of August. Sofea has a busy tournament playing singles, doubles and mixed doubles!

Sofea and her doubles partner won the U14’s title. After dropping the first set the girls showed great determination and fought back to win the second set forcing a tie break to take home the trophy. Sofea showed remarkable composure under pressure and a well-deserved win for the girls. 

Football

Congratulations to Daisy Grice who represents Mosman FC in the 1st Division of the Manly Warringah Football Association U13’s.

Daisy has been playing club football with Mosman for five years and last weekend her team played in the Final.  Daisy scored the winning goal in the semi-final taking her team to the final. The team were narrowly defeated 1-0 in the final, however, the team was thrilled to finish as runners up for 2026.

Rhythmic Gymnastics

for their participation at the Australian Rhythmic Gymnastics Spring Cup held on 5 September at Australian Rhythmic Gymnastics in Rooty Hill.

Their performances were stellar and showed determination, adversity and passion for their sport. It was a great experience for all to grow in their competition experience, not to mention, all gymnasts placed in their apparatus routines and overall!

Head Coach Rachel, Coach Evie and the Rhythmic Gymnastics coaching team are pleased with the gymnasts’ resilience performing on the floor with their freehand, hoop, ball and clubs routines!

Around the Grounds

It was a warm day for Round 6 of the IPSHA competition, with SCEGGS teams competing at venues across Sydney. There were some exciting and closely contested matches throughout the day. A special congratulations to the SCEGGS 7 Touch Football team, who secured their first win of the season! Despite playing in the middle of the day, the team showed wonderful grit and determination to finish with a three-try victory. Indi Cowper (Year 4) had an outstanding game, using her speed and agility to navigate the Meriden defence and find the try line on several occasions. Congratulations to the entire team on their continued improvement, effort and commitment.

A reminder that Saturday 12 September is the final round for Year 3 Netball, IPSHA Touch Football and IPSHA AFL. Trials for Year 3 Football (Soccer), IPSHA Tennis and IPSHA Basketball will take place in Weeks 9 and 10.

IPSHA and NSWCIS Primary Athletics Championships

The IPSHA Athletics Championships were held on Wednesday, 26 August, at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre (SOPAC), with 18 SCEGGS students from Years 3–6 representing the school. The event brought together 1406 students from 59 schools, creating a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day. SCEGGS spirit was strong, with the team enthusiastically supporting and cheering on their peers. The girls gave their best against strong competition, with many impressive performances and achievements across the day. Congratulations to the following students who qualified for the NSWCIS Championships.

Junior Relay team: Sienna Fleming, Edith Herceg, Romy Allen and Eleanor Brown – 3^rd Place

Sienna Fleming – Girls 8-10 High Jump – 5^th Place

Charlotte Willis – 11 Years 200m = 5^th Place

The NSWCIS Athletics Championships were held on Friday, 4 September, at SOPAC. Charlotte Willis, Sienna Fleming, Edith Herceg, Romy Allen and Eleanor Brown did an excellent job representing SCEGGS and IPSHA at the event.

It was a wonderful day and SCEGGS came out firing! Students were excited and focussed on putting in their best efforts. All students were very competitive in their events, with two out of three achieving Personal Bests!

Charlotte competed in the 11 Years 200m, finishing 3^rd in her heat and 10^th overall with a time of 30.66 – a new PB!

Sienna competed in the 8-10 Years High Jump placing 6^th with a height of 1.20m. This is a 10cm PB for Sienna!

The Junior Relay Team of Edith, Eleanor, Romy and Sienna placed 6^th in their heat and 10^th overall with a time of 1:02.77. A huge effort for this team at the CIS level and only .45 seconds off their IPSHA time, which was their first ever time running a relay together!
