Head of Senior School

The school year started with grades still ‘cohorting’ together and some pandemic restrictions were still in place. As the school year progressed, what we would say is ‘normal’ started to occur.

New beginnings can be daunting, scary and life changing. For many of us, the unknown can be something we struggle with. For me, the last few months has been all about trusting in God’s ‘bigger picture’ for myself and my family.

I was privileged to address our Year 12 cohort at this year’s Valedictory Dinner. The following is an excerpt from that speech. I share this now as the message extends to those beyond that cohort. An observation of what is in front and some words of encouragement.

It is the time when our newly appointed House Captain or Prefects will be announced, with the School Captains being announced later this year. Unfortunately, we are unable to appoint all applicants to formal positions of leadership. There will no doubt be joyful responses and, conversely, sadness. I would therefore like to provide some advice and encouragement to those who applied.

As you think about how to treat others, begin by thinking about the ways in which you would want to be treated by others. Those words lead us to exactly the kind of respectful, supportive and inclusive community that we desire to be.

It is human nature to shy away from challenges. They are daunting and taxing and leave us open to failure, but a challenge creates the possibility for true learning and growth to occur. Here at the College, we want to develop courageous learners.

It’s a cliched expression, but raising children is a marathon – not a sprint. In most cases my experience is that open and honest communication with your child, along with clear and consistent guidance will help them to navigate these years well. Hang in there!

My hope is that this encourages you wherever you are and whatever you may be doing, particularly given the upcoming Easter break. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

My final message to the students was to do the best they can with all their heart, soul, mind and strength, then with faith in God, He will help them to do incredible things.

It has been fantastic to have Senior School students back on campus this week. A school is a very lonely place when it is not filled with students so it was wonderful to have that buzz back again.

One thing is for sure though, if we approach the holidays with the mindset that we are going to make the most of it, we will feel more refreshed and be better placed to cope with whatever Term 4 brings.

In Matthew 6:34 Jesus says, ‘therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
