Year 7 Science

Year 7 has concluded a term learning about forces, with a multitude of improvised experiments at home involving shoes, fridge magnets, static electric charges on plastic rulers and parachutes, just to name a few. We’ve also been making good use of online simulations. Have a look at the wonderful PhET website, where you can try some of the Science simulations yourself!

As a community of readers, Book Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits, and joy that reading brings to our lives. Book Week 2021:”Old World, New Worlds, Other Worlds” presented an opportunity for senior school students and staff to celebrate favorite characters and books from classics through to contemporary books, (past, present or future) in the new norm our “Virtual world”

We kicked off Book week with two local author sessions: Karen Hendriks the author of “Home” and Clayton Comber the author of “100 Remarkable Feats of Xander Maze”. Both of the authors explained the writing process and writer’s craft in an informative and entertaining manner.

During Pastoral Care sessions the students engaged in a range of fun activities to celebrate Book Week by exploring the suggestions in the Virtual World Padlet. The categories included:  Book Recommendation, Read aloud, Dramatic interpretation of a scene from a book and an Artistic interpretation of a book character or scene

Our Book Week character dress day tradition continued in the “Virtual world”. Students and staff dressed as their favorite book week character or a character representing Old Worlds, New Worlds & Other Worlds for their House Tutor Group Zoom.

Throughout Book Week we ran two competitions:

Guess the Staff member and what he or she is reading from Book week trailer.

Thrifty Fifty: An opportunity for senior students to write a narrative or prose with a limit of 50 words. Winners for both competitions will be announced after the spring holiday break.

All in all we had a fantastic week. The senior school  library was decorated to reflect the Book Week theme and for those who came to visit us, were welcomed to the Madhatter’s Tea Party World.
