You’ve got to love hands free parking in these modern cars. I think it should be a retrofit for all models and years, based on the necessity of reverse parking these days. Who remembers their driver’s test and where you did a reverse or parallel park? Have you ’nailed it’ yet? What about trailers, caravans and B doubles?

One of the necessities of our car park pick up is a better than average ability to get a reverse park completed in one go, two at the most. There’s immediate feedback, scrutiny from other drivers, often a teacher watching, and your own level of expectation along with the feelings that come all too easily when panel beating and car insurance is on the cards. Where else is so much at stake when it comes to a skill? Perhaps kite surfing or crocodile wrestling, but reverse parking is right up there.  I really am very proud of you all! There’s lots of excellent skill on show every day and I appreciate it, as do the car owners either side.

Learning at school is a bit like reverse parking. It seems intimidating and almost impossible at first, and so many others are better at it. But practice, good tuition at the right time, and a bunch of people around you to cheer you on or help correct your mistakes soon adds up to ‘nailed it’. Cars can be repaired, failure can help us review our strategy, and practice does make progress (not always perfect). The upcoming Zoom interviews and class visits will help us be a great pit crew for our young learners. I look forward to these opportunities and encourage you to be involved.
