Welcome back after the break. Hopefully our students (and families!) enjoyed the chance to unwind and are ready and recharged to make the most of Term 2. To all our girls who represented Pymble during the holidays in athletics, swimming, diving, robotics, equestrian, tennis, artistic gymnastics and Cattle Team competitions, thank you and congratulations! More details and results can be found in our Co-curricular Sports and Robotics sections.

The beginning of a term always fills me with hope about what is to come; there is a sense of excitement in the air and great energy regarding the students returning.

As I write this column, which I also shared with staff earlier in the week, it’s 1.11am, I’m on my way from Poland to Israel and certainly in need of finding some hope. Many of you will know from previous communications that I have spent most of the school holidays participating in The March of the Living program to learn more about the Holocaust and consider how we can offer these learnings to our students. The last week has been hard. Really hard. The group I am travelling with includes a wonderful man and Holocaust survivor, Henry Burch, and many other people who are Jewish and who have a deep and personal connection with the Holocaust, having lost grandparents, parents, aunts, siblings and, in some cases, every family member other than their parents during this period of history. We have visited death camps, labour camps (which are more death camps, really), sites of mass murder, memorials, cemeteries, museums, and many other places of significance. We have also spent time with the Righteous Among the Nations and heard about the extraordinary courage of non-Jewish individuals who risked their lives to help Jews during the Holocaust.

Our group members have shared letters written by loved ones who were murdered; letters that were only received and read after the war. When we visited the mass graves where relatives of people in our group lie, we heard about the last days before their family members were massacred. We have borne witness to one group member coming across a large photo of her Aunty on display at Auschwitz where she was subjected to terrible medical experimentation and then killed. So, when I say it’s been tough, it really has been tough. It will take months, years and probably the balance of my life to process this experience – if that is even possible.

I have learned so much and have so much to share with our community but, for now, I will leave you with this reflection: Perhaps the opposite of good is not evil – it’s indifference.

We have all heard the saying, “The standard you walk past is the standard you accept” but let’s go a bit deeper than that. At times, it costs us very little to take action, for example, by picking up that piece of rubbish rather than walking past it or taking the time to turn off the lights as we exit a classroom.

The question is, how often do we take action when the personal cost of doing so becomes more than just ‘a little’ and possibly even ‘a lot’ – and how do we encourage this in our students?

It isn’t an easy question to answer but it certainly is worthy of deep consideration. To live together, we have to learn together. This is true in all contexts of our lives – within our own families, our Pymble family and, more broadly, our global family. If we learn together, perhaps we might open our hearts enough to relegate indifference to a back seat and usher understanding and kindness further up the aisle (away from row 31, where I’m currently seated) and into First Class where these attributes belong.

Thank you to our wonderful Deputy Principal, Lamia Rockwell, for all her support that has enabled me to be immersed in this experience. There is always a lot going on at Pymble and it has been a blessing, as it was with Julie Shaw last year when I was on sabbatical leave, to be able to step out knowing that things were absolutely in hand.

I’ll be back on campus next week; in the meantime, I am sending you my best wishes for the start of the term. A special thank you to our wonderful History Captains, Cadets, musicians and choristers for all your hard work preparing and rehearsing for our Anzac Day ceremony on Wednesday. You will see one of the photos below was taken on our group’s Anzac Day ceremony in Israel. Now, more than ever, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for our armed services, all that they have done and all that they continue to do for our country.

Signing off with a fair bit of exhaustion, a good dash of homesickness, and a strong sense of hope for the future, knowing our students are in the best of hands. Each day at Pymble, our young people are growing their understanding of the world, others around them, and their potential to use their influence and compassion to make the world a better place. They are not indifferent; they are not walking past when they encounter injustice. They are learning how, when and why it is important to take action when they see something that is not just, equitable or right, and they make us incredibly Pymble Proud.

Welcome back to Term 2. We extend a warm welcome to Annie Yuan (Year 3) who has joined our Junior School family. We look forward to getting to know you all as a family in the coming weeks. It’s lovely to see the girls back, wearing their Winter uniform with such pride, and so excited about their learning.  We wish a happy Eid to our families who have observed Ramadan

Our Kindergarten girls were thrilled to see the two mud kitchens which have been installed in their play area over the holiday break.

Kindness to Others

This term our focus is on Kindness to Others which aligns perfectly with our College mission to be of service this year. Whilst often kindness is seen as slightly soft or a sign of weakness, I believe it is a sign of strength of mind and character to show kindness in the choices we each make every day. Kindness is multi layered and throughout this term our girls will unpack their understanding of four Kindness to Others facts:

  1. I can be of service.
  2. I can be inclusive.
  3. I can listen to others.
  4. I can use my voice for change.

Each girl will be given a journal with ideas of possible acts of service she can undertake to make a difference, whether at home or within your local community. As the girls complete their chosen service acts, they are encouraged to complete a reflection at the back of the journal to think about how their service act made them feel. Being of service to others is a way to enhance our sense of self and to build personal joy. By working together, we can encourage our girls to empower themselves through their service acts of kindness to others.

I am very proud that our teachers continue to look for ways we can support our girls in growing through service. Our Junior School Robotics Coordinator, Mrs Alison Tedesco has fostered a partnership with St Lucy’s School, Wahroonga and a group of our Year 5 girls will visit St Lucy’s over this term to share their robotics skills with some of the children at that school. I know this will be a very special connection for our girls and the pupils at St Lucy’s and I am very proud of this learning and service partnership Mrs Tedesco has established.

Mrs Nerissa Davey, Deputy Head of Junior School Operations is also leading a service initiative by taking a group of Year 6 girls to Bowden Brae aged care facility throughout Term 2 to connect with the residents and to learn together through shared stories and creative projects. I look forward to hearing about the wisdom our girls get from these elders in our community and to the joy our girls will inevitably bring.

An invitation to have your say: An invitation to be part of a focus group

I need your help please! I feel very honoured, and deeply challenged, to be co-leading our College’s Social Intelligence strategic focus and looking at how we shape our community. We are determined to foster an inclusive community for all our families to enjoy and in which we all feel safe and valued. I openly say this is a challenge because my cultural background shapes my knowledge base and experiences and I’m trying to broaden these by learning from the stories of others.  As such, I am hoping to work with a wide range of our community, so all perspectives and members of our College family are heard. It is important that we strive for equity of voice, active engagement for all members of our community and a strong sense of our collective citizenship.

There are a number of dates and times available for focus groups to come and share your thoughts with me, so if you are interested, please select the one that suits you.

From the Middle School

Welcome back to all of our Middle School families. I trust that you have had a wonderful Easter break. The girls have returned full of enthusiasm for all that lies ahead in Term 2. Thank you for ensuring that your daughters are in full winter unform. The team will continue to support the girls in relation to not wearing any jewellery or makeup whilst at school and remind them about leaving campus with their hats and blazers on (if the weather dictates an outer garment).

I am very much looking forward to welcoming our new Year 7 Student Leaders to the team, they will be working with the existing Year 8 Student Leaders to ensure Middle School is a safe and welcoming place for everyone, where all sorts of exciting initiatives can come to fruition.

As Dr Hadwen mentioned in her welcome message, this term Middle School will be expanding on our Service initiatives. One project that we will be embracing is entitled Happy Boxes. This will provide opportunities for our girls to look beyond the college and themselves and to reach out to young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls from remote communities in the Northern Territory in an attempt to empower them through alleviating the barriers of accessing basic needs. I look forward to sharing further details as they come to hand.

All the very best of luck and bon voyage to the Year 7 Robotics girls who are listed below. Nicole Fan, Jessica Persson, Chloe Shao, Celine Soo, Leahara Wijesuriya, Elaine Zhang and Valerie Zhao. These talented girls will be heading to the United States to compete on the international stage. Thank you for representing Pymble.

Congratulations to our Middle School Concert Band for their inspirational performance during the Anzac Service on Wednesday. They certainly set the mood with their rendition of March of the Royal Guards. Thank you also to Fiona Pan (Year 8) for her eloquent reading of the prayer.

A reminder regarding Leave Applications

Leave is only granted for illness, bereavement, elite sport or work experience. Vacations should be restricted to the prescribed holiday periods. Where possible, leave to attend medical appointments should be minimised. Students are expected to participate in whole-school activities and should avoid making appointments on these occasions.

Applications for special leave should be completed on the ‘Exemption from Attendance’ form found on MyPymble via the College website and signed by a parent or carer. Forms are to be sent to the respective school office as soon as possible or at least fourteen days in advance of the intended period of leave.

A message from Mr Riley, Head of Upper School

Hello and welcome back to Term 2! It has been a very exciting break with some fantastic successes by Upper School students nationally in Brisbane with Athletics, and internationally with our Robotics Team in America. More of this to come next week! The week has also begun with a flurry of activity with our last Year 9 Residential Program heading off to Vision Valley on Wednesday at 7.00am, and our wonderful cadets providing a moving ANZAC Day service.

This week, I would like to share the amazing achievements of Méa Shires and Jenny Xu from over the break. Below are recounts from Méa and Jenny about what they achieved:

I had an amazing experience at diving age nationals this year. It was a week-long event held at Sydney Olympic Park. I had an intensive timetable with early morning training sessions, waking up every morning at 5.00am, then competing throughout the day followed by afternoon training sessions. My competitions felt like a marathon, one lasting over three hours! It was a big test of my resilience and mental strength. I was proud with my results, securing a silver medal for both 1m springboard and platform and also bronze for 3m springboard. Overall, I was named 2023 National Champion for girls 14/15 years.

One of the best parts of the experience was meeting people from all over Australia. We had divers from Queensland, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Victoria, Tasmania and a special guest from New Zealand. It was great to connect with others who share my passion for diving.

I was also fortunate to represent NSW as the state representative for the 14/15 category competing in the State Challenge held during the opening ceremony. It was a tremendous privilege and the highlight of my journey. I competed with my team of three other divers, ending up winning second place, with Queensland taking home the title. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience which I will always remember. I’d like to thank my coach Maddi Pullinger who has been there for me on my tremendous roller coaster of nationals supporting and pushing me to do my best, and to Rylee McKinstry, a former Pymble diver, for knowing exactly how to help!

Written by Méa Shires (Year 9)

During the holidays, I represented NSW at the Voice UN Nationals, and spoke about how the international community should respond to states and companies that play a vital role in global trade but engage in unethical practices.

I was drawn to this topic as I wanted to explore the regulatory capacity of international bodies and the reasons behind why unethical practices continue to occur after they have been exposed. I was also interested in the role that economic and political power plays in the enforcement of current treaties or legislation.

My proposal targets developing countries that are dependent on exploitative corporate giants. In order to attract investment, many developing countries currently compete in a race to the bottom, lowering tax and overlooking a variety of unethical practices.

Governance building programs managed by the UN and ILO would assist these countries in areas such as skill upgrading, procedural improvements and administrative strengthening. These programs would aim to provide an alternative to the current ‘race to the bottom’ and would provide opportunities for ethical, organic development.

From the Senior School

From the Senior School

Welcome back to all Senior School families – we hope that you had a lovely restful break and were able to spend some valuable family time together. It is always wonderful to reconnect with the students and hear their stories – some have been travelling, or competing or taking some time to rest and rejuvenate. During holidays, sometimes our routines can become a little disrupted, so it is important in these early days of term to re-establish healthy patterns around sleeping, eating and screen time.

A reminder that all families were sent the Term 2 e-book with useful information for returning to school.

Best wishes to all for a successful and productive Term 2!

From the Boarding School

From the Boarding School

It was lovely to welcome our Boarders and their families back to campus on Tuesday afternoon. I have to admit to feeling a little wobbly about leaving the holidays behind but five minutes with our beautiful Boarders sorted out any reluctance and I know I am not alone in planning on a fabulous Term 2.

A new member of our Boarding family

I am delighted to share the news that Holly Burke, our Head of Year 10 Boarding, and her husband, Mitch, welcomed beautiful little Eden Lin-Shu Burke to their family on 3 April. As you will see from the photo below, Eden is just gorgeous!

Leadership of Goodlet House

As Holly enjoys her maternity leave, the wonderful Kate Inglis, Head of Year 11 Boarding, will take on the additional responsibility of leadership of our Year 10 group, stepping up to the temporary position of Head of Goodlet House. Kate is excited about ‘officially’ adding our beautiful Year 10s to her area of leadership. Supporting Kate will be Jaimee Fischer, Taryn Mahoney and Neha Beri as Assistant Heads of Year, in addition to our trusty team of Boarding Assistants. I hope you agree this is an awesome team.

Food, glorious food!

Mealtimes remain an important part of our day here at Pymble and ensuring our Boarders have a nutritious and delicious menu is high on our agenda. Please click the following link to view the Term 2 menu. We are constantly seeking feedback and do make adjustments as the menu cycles through the term. Of course, your feedback is always welcome.

Click here to see the Term 2 Menu.

Supporting our Boarders to maintain good health

As the temperature goes down, the number of colds and infectious disease tends to rise. To this end, we will be working with the girls to have a strong focus on personal and environmental hygiene. We also encourage the Boarders to remain up to date, where appropriate, with vaccinations. If your daughter is yet to have the flu shot and/or is eligible for COVID vaccinations, please let us know so we can assist in organising appointments.

Should your daughter become ill with an infectious disease we will do all that we can to care for her here at the College. In line with Government recommendations, Boarders who test positive to COVID are required to isolate until they are symptom free and it makes sense to follow the same process for other infectious disease such as influenza. I am hopeful we will be able to manage the isolation requirements onsite and will keep you posted of our arrangements to make this possible.

Pymble comes to you!

The following weekend, I am lucky enough to be visiting Dubbo for the Boarding Expo. I will be joined by the wonderful Clair Stock and Jackie Garment, along with our fabulous Grace Peters who will be representing our Boarders. We would love to see you either at the Expo or at our event on Friday 5 May at Press. Please use the following link to rsvp if you are going to join us at Press.

Love It

We have an exciting term ahead filled with an action packed Love It program. The Boarders all received a program as they arrived back on Tuesday and there was a flurry of excitement over what was on offer.

This weekend our Boarders will be creating Mother’s Day gifts with Mrs Myles on Saturday afternoon, before heading out to see the Sydney Swifts take on the GWS Giants in the Super Netball.  On Sunday, Mr and Mrs Burgess will be taking a group of girls out to Bilpin for apple picking and lunch at Hill Billy Cider.  Our special thanks to to the McLaughlin family for treating our Boarders to this wonderful experience.

The link to the Term 2 program can be accessed below. I hope you enjoy leafing through the opportunities and planning with your daughter which events she will attend.

From the Chaplain

From the Chaplain

Welcome back to Term 2, the week of Anzac Day remembrance. Those of us in the Christian tradition are in the season of Easter and Resurrection, reflecting on death and new life. In 2010, I had the privilege of visiting Anzac Cove in Turkey just before April 25 and was able to sit with fellow Australian friends and reflect on the tragedy of the Anzacs and what this continues to mean for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, and for those who serve in the Armed Forces. My own great grandfather died in one of wars following World War I as an officer in the British Indian Army. I think of him whenever we offer prayers for all servicemen and women around the world.

Our Muslim families have just celebrated Eid Al Fitr, the festival which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, so a very happy Eid to all of you!

If you keep up to date with all things Pymble, you would have seen Principal, Dr Hadwen, who has been on a spiritual journey herself, walking with Jewish and non-Jewish sojourners in Poland (International March of the Living), remembering the Holocaust and standing in solidarity with all Jewish people around the world. On April 18 18 was Yom Ha Shoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) which is set aside to remember the six million Jews who died as victims of the nazis during World War II. Our prayers for continued compassion and mercy in the world as we remember.

As we enter Term 2, with winter on its way and seasons shifting, we can begin to think of ways to continue caring for ourselves and our families, by nurturing one another as God, in all of God’s mercy, does for us.  In post-resurrection narratives of Jesus, his followers found it difficult to see him in his transformed being and yet encountered him with great surprise and effervescent joy and disbelief. We are called to embrace change and see God through transformed lenses.

This week in my devotions this was the suggested spiritual practice which I share with you:

  • Take some time this week to walk with a trusted friend and notice the transformations occurring in nature all around you. Notice any changes occurring in your body as you do this. Take some time to sit down with each other to acknowledge any untended grief, stress or joy. Be present to the stillness and silence within, knowing it is flowing love beyond all identifications, stories, and earthly suffering. Know that this practice itself has begun another transformation. See for one another how you have been transformed. (Contemplative Outreach, April 23 Word of the Week)

Prayers for a safe and blessed term for you and your children. May the good Lord walk with you in all your mountaintop and valley moments.

As the new term starts, I look forward to being an audience as students celebrate their talents not only in final performances and presentations but also in the sheer joy of individual and collaborative rehearsals and development of their particular skills and abilities.

There is nothing more inspiring than walking around the various Performing Arts spaces at Pymble and witnessing the passionate and committed endeavours of students in Music, Dance, Drama and Language Arts as they hone their crafts.

Ballet Excursion

Our Vocational RAD Ballet students had an opportunity to see the final rehearsal for the Australian Ballet Production of Quixote at the Opera House at the end of Term 1. The rehearsal performance was a great experience for the students as the Director was stopping the show at any point to give the cast corrections. Seeing this process has allowed our Ballet students to understand the work that goes into a professional production. The show was incredible and the students all walked out feeling very inspired.

Thank you to Miss Samantha Hibburt, Miss Genevieve Gardiner and Miss Laura Fishwick for escorting the girls to the production.

April Holiday Workshops

The Dance Team brought their A-game and hosted some absolutely fantastic Dance Workshops that were so much fun. The RAD Ballet Students kicked things off with a Choreographic Workshop in preparation for the upcoming Term 3 Ballet Production, ‘The King of the Polar Bears.’

And that’s not all – it was also followed by a half-day intensive to perfect their set syllabus. But it wasn’t just the RAD Ballet Students who had a blast – the Junior Students had an absolute ball during their own Junior Dance Workshops, where they explored the worlds of Jazz, Lyrical, and Hip Hop! These workshops were nothing short of wonderful, and the energy and enthusiasm from everyone involved was positively contagious.

Eisteddfod Intensive Weekend / USA Dance Tour Info Session & Costume Collection

The Eisteddfod Team are getting ready to elevate their performance to new heights because this weekend is all about the Eisteddfod Intensive Weekend! It’s time for them to dig deep and push themselves to the limit as our team comes together for an unforgettable experience filled with workshops designed to take the routines to the next level.

From start to finish, this weekend is jam-packed with an incredible lineup of workshops that will help the groups make significant progress in their skills and technique. And, most importantly, it’s a chance for our team to come together and build an unbreakable bond. You can find the full schedule of events on our parent portal and by clicking here so make sure to check it out and get ready for an intensive weekend that will leave our dancers feeling inspired for the competition season.

Term 2 Dance

Get ready to blast off into a world of wonder and excitement, because we have some incredible news to share! Our 2023 Dance Showcase is going to be out of this world, with a theme based on the one and only ‘Future’! We recently had a two-hour creative meeting with our Dance Staff and student representatives, and let’s just say, the ideas that came out of that meeting will blow your mind!

We’ve got a ton of thought-provoking and fun themes to explore with our classes. All Onstage Stream classes are already gearing up to begin their routines this term, and trust us, you’re not going to want to miss a single moment of the action. We will be distributing a comprehensive Showcase Information Pack later this term, so keep your eyes peeled for all the details. And mark your calendars because, like always, the Showcase will be held in Week 5 of Term 4, and we can’t wait to see you there!

Attendance

We just wanted to remind everyone that maintaining suitable attendance in Cocurricular Dance is super important if students want to be eligible to perform at the Dance Showcase and/or complete RAD Ballet Examinations.

We totally understand that sometimes extenuating circumstances may arise, and if your daughter needs to take multiple lessons off for any reason, we are here to help. Just send us an email at dance@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au to discuss her situation and we will work together to find a solution that works for everyone. Our goal is to make sure every student has a chance to shine and succeed, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any assistance.

All absences must be notified via CCSA Google Form.

Cert III in Dance First Aid Certificate

We are absolutely thrilled to congratulate our incredible Cert III in Dance Students on completing their full First Aid certificate during the holidays as part of their coursework. It is no secret that having students who are upskilled in First Aid is of immense benefit to both our College and our community, and we are so grateful to our students for taking the initiative to develop these critical skills.

It just goes to show that our students are not only talented dancers but also responsible and caring members of society. We commend them on their exceptional efforts and can’t wait to see them continue to make a positive impact in the world in their dance teaching pursuits.

Music

Music

Welcome back! Our rehearsals began in earnest this week and we are very excited to continue making music with your daughters.

Congratulations to Josie Green who performed The Last Post and Reveille magnificently at the Anzac Day Ceremony on Wednesday. These pieces of music are very difficult as each note must be pitched by changing the shape of your mouth (embouchure), meaning there can often be a “split” note.

Well done to the Middle School Concert Band, under the direction of Ms Zeltzer, who performed the processional and recessional with a three-week rehearsal break. Your teamwork was testament to your dedication and commitment – congratulations!

Ensemble clashes

A note on clashes with music and sport training: Please know that sport and music are both very important activities for your daughter and both faculties do recognise this. We therefore have a wonderful arrangement whereby we allow the girls to attend one sports training and their only music rehearsal/week. Your daughter must liaise with their coach to let them know. Please be reassured that your daughter will not be “dropped” because she can only attend one training session. If you have any queries regarding this, please email me and I will discuss this with the sports team.

Pymble Diving – Australian Age National Diving Recap

During the holiday break, nine Pymble students across Years 4 to 12 represented Diving NSW at the 2023 Australian Age Nationals held in Sydney from Thursday 13 April to Sunday 16 April. The week was exciting and successful with our Pymble students walking away with five medals, great experiences, and new achievements. Led by their Diving Captain, Nikola Puhl (Year 12), the team had the opportunity to compete in both the springboard and platform fields, in events with up to 40 competitors, and gain and strengthen friendships across both the NSW team and other states.

It was exciting to have such a large and diverse team of Pymble divers compete, with this team bound to grow and improve as we get back in the pool and set some new goals for the 2023 NSW Diving season.

In addition to diving, we had the pleasure of Charlotte Allen (Year 12) singing a flawless acoustic rendition of the National anthem for the Opening Ceremony from the 7m platform.

Beyond the experiences and opportunities this competition offered all the divers, it was incredible to walk away with such inspiring results. A special congratulations to Amélie Rahme (Year 5), who won gold and was the National Champion in the 11 and under 3m springboard event, and Zara Ware (Year 4) who placed 3rd and received a bronze medal in the 11 and under 1m springboard event.

Finally, congratulations to Méa Shires (Year 9) who had an outstanding Championships medalling in all three of her individual events, taking silver in the 14/15 Girls 1m springboard and platform events, and bronze in her 3m springboard event. This resulted in Méa being awarded the overall 14/15-year National Champion diver as well as being selected as one of four NSW representatives in the State team challenge. Congratulations Méa!

For a number of our Junior divers, this was their very first Nationals.  It was an outstanding achievement to qualify for these Championships and to be representing NSW.

Annual feedback surveys for parents and students

Annual feedback surveys for parents and students

As part of the College’s continual improvement process, MMG has been commissioned to conduct the annual reviews from parents and students. These surveys give us the chance to receive feedback so we can build on our strengths and prioritise areas of focus. Whilst doing surveys takes time, we are eager to use the research-informed feedback from parents and students and are very appreciative of each response.

Parents of students in Year 3, 5, 8, 10 and 12 will shortly receive their personal email with a link to the MMG ‘Tracking’ survey. This voluntary survey takes about half an hour. It invites parents to share feedback on areas including academics, wellbeing, boarding, co-curricular activities, sport and leadership. If parents are in one of the target year groups and have not received a personal email with a link by Friday 5 May, please let me know.

Students in Years 5, 8, 10 and 12 will soon receive links to their own MMG ‘Tracking’ survey. Students will be supervised in Mind, Body, Spirit time to do their survey but the surveys are voluntary to complete.

In Term 3, students from Year 6 to 12 will be invited to complete the MMG Wellbeing survey. This survey goes into greater depth than the Tracking survey which also includes some wellbeing questions. Further information will be shared in Term 3.

At the conclusion of the research period, MMG Education compiles final reports for the College. In months ahead, we look forward to sharing insights from the research with the community.

Please remember, that by completing the questionnaires, parents and students are making an invaluable contribution to the future of the College as we strive to ensure that we are providing the best opportunities possible for our students.

Thank you for your feedback and contribution.

Late last term, the Pymble Pride Robotics team visited Tallahassee, Florida, for the FIRST Robotics Competition and their first international regional. Regionals are an opportunity to qualify for the FIRST Championship in Houston, Texas. Pymble Pride attended the Florida regional to boost the team’s international profile.

Despite a very strong start, the team finished 4th and were awarded the Engineering Excellence award for the design of their robot, Tall-e. Despite finishing 4th, the team had previously qualified for the Houston Championships in the Wollongong regionals, three weeks earlier.

With a skeleton crew of seven students, each team member was going to be busy throughout the event. The team usually comprises of 36 members. Each student was going to be stretched.

The robot, designed by students in early January, was disassembled into four check-in luggage sized pieces, to make the transportation by plane as easy as possible, and rebuilt in the hotel room once arriving in Tallahassee.

With thanks to the Capital City Chaotic Coders, we were able to test our robot in one of the University libraries, to make sure all the systems were working before the competition. After some inevitable hiccups, the robot was fully functional. Well done to our young engineers for designing the robot so successfully.

On the practice day, our rookie drive team, Sophia Chang (Year 10) and Rachel Moon (Year 10) managed to get over 16 matches of practice against top teams, gaining important match experience. By the end of the day, it became clear to other teams we were going to be one of the favourites.

Ang-Ya Koo (Year 10) and Ashley Chow (Year 10) led all work in the pit area, ensuring each member fulfilled their duties and the team coordinated and communicated clearly, making sure the small things were done correctly.

Annie Luo (Year 10), Emma Du (Year 10) and Teresa Sun (Year 10) with the help of Miss Baker, scouted out their opponents. Scouting is an important part of strategy, ensuring match data for every team is gathered so that they can make informed and accurate strategy selection and alliances for every match.

Many teams were in awe of the professionalism and focus of our teams. By the end of the qualification matches on Saturday, we were ranked 1st and looking like the favourites.

Our Pymble team were able to relax and make friends with other team members on Saturday night. They were like superstars, with other students and mentors introducing themselves and complimenting them on their approach!

Final qualification matches were held on Sunday morning before Finals in the afternoon. We were looking like the team to beat. Unfortunately, our momentum was about to take a turn.

During a judging interview while showing our robot, our amazing driver Rachel Moon (Year 10) caught her finger in one of the mechanisms, puncturing her finger in the process. Thankfully, due to general safety procedures and after medical checks, Rachel was left to drive in pain, with a heavily bandaged finger. Rachel and Sophia were now under immense pressure to retain our number one ranking.

Despite digging deep, they lost control of the robot in a split second resulting in the robot toppling over. Unfortunately, we lost our number one ranking. The team showed grit, fought back and regained that number one ranking only to lose it again in the final qualification match in an amazing fightback by other teams.

We entered the Finals as the 2nd alliance. Each finals match was immensely competitive, with small things swaying the results, with many upsets and surprises. Our students showed courage and kept going to the end. Unfortunately, we lost in the Semi-finals, finishing 4th overall against the tournament champions.

Importantly, our teams faced the challenges and gave it their all, learning so much along the way. We also made international friends, namely Taubatexas 7459, a Brazilian team, who laughed and cried with us along the way. Also, special thanks to Wolfbotics 5145 for being so welcoming and accommodating.

The event was a success and the College is immensely proud of the mammoth achievement that has been accomplished on the international stage. Our team may not have won, but they have shown Pymble courage and determination. They left Tallahassee proud of their achievements and heads held high.

Over the Easter holiday period, the team competed against the rest of the world at the FIRST Championship in Houston, Texas. Information on how the girls went will be shared in the coming weeks.

Thank you to our dedicated and passionate Robotics Co-Ordinator, Asaph Mross Becker, for inspiring the students with his work ethic and care.
