There really is no place like home.

I have returned from the March of the Living educational experience with a full heart, the deepest conviction we are doing the right thing for humanity by continuing to focus on our Social Intelligence pillar through nurturing a culture of kindness and giving back to people in need, and an enormous appreciation for our amazing Pymble family. Of course, the best part of coming home is reconnecting with our girls, especially our Year 12s at their photo day today; I’m so proud of the young women they have become. Lunchtimes in the Secondary School have been joyous occasions filled with the sound of PAC Week performances (and a great deal of cheering), and our Junior School students are beyond excited to be officially inaugurated into one of our eight spirit Houses in a Hogwarts/Harry Potter-esque ceremony, complete with “sorting hat” and fabulous new House banners. It’s heartening to see the girls supporting each other so fiercely and with a sense of belonging to something that is bigger than them alone.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had a real insight into the hardship of feeling unwelcome in your homeland and, sadly, this continues to be the reality for many refugees. Here at Pymble, we are keen to continue to support refugees and are delighted to be hosting The Village Championship on Sunday. You may remember hearing about this event last year. It stemmed from one of our Year 12 students at the time, Tahmara Thomas, who was so moved by televised footage of Afghan locals desperately trying to leave their war-torn city that she wanted to do something to help. Joining forces with Her Village Foundation (HVF), she pitched the idea of hosting a festival at Pymble to welcome newly arrived refugee children from Afghanistan to our community. Tahmara is now at university studying Law and Psychology, in between organising this year’s event and making plans to head up HVF as CEO when it becomes a fully-fledged charity. It is my pleasure to hand over to Tahmara to tell you more.

Dear Pymble,

Please join us at The Village Championship on Sunday.

The Village Championship is a three-day program of friendship and collaboration between 20 Pymble girls and 20 Afghan girls. Day one is a leadership program with ice breaker activities. Day two is a football training day held at Rydalmere Football Club. The program summates on Sunday 7 May with a thrilling football match and Afghan cultural festival showcasing experiential stalls, inspirational speakers, and a taste of Afghan food, music and fashion.

The Afghan girls involved are high school aged, the youngest being 12. Most of them have arrived in Australia in the last two years and some of them are here alone, having had to leave their families behind in Afghanistan. All of them have seen tragedy and war at close quarters and yet they are filled with spirit and hope. They want to get on with their lives in the best way possible. They aspire to go to good schools and universities, just like us. Our vision at HerVillage is to harness the power of connection to help empower young refugee women as the leaders of tomorrow. We want to be the bridge between these girls and the different services they might need to embrace life here. We believe in building a village of support and care around these young women who have been forced to leave behind their homes and communities and navigate major life changes at a very young age. Our next focus is practical services we can provide the girls such as scholarships and funding for academic tutoring, English lessons and driving classes.

We are currently working with KPMG to become a registered charity and establish our board and constitution so we can be a sustainable organisation for change. I am excited to take on the role of the CEO, supported by our amazing team. I feel privileged to work with such an inspiring, diverse group of people and hope to use this opportunity to further the cause of young female leadership.

Last year’s event raised $15,000 and we also worked with KPMG to donate a further $30,000 to Mahboba’s Promise. Mahboba Rawi will be at the festival on Sunday to share her inspirational story, which you can also watch here. But perhaps the greatest success of last year were the friendships that were created between the girls. Despite coming from two different worlds and the language barrier, both sets of girls embraced the opportunity to learn from each other’s lives and experiences. It has been great to see that legacy continue this year.

This event couldn’t happen without the unwavering support and dedication of Pymble staff Greg Meagher, Meredith Coleman, Shervin Keshavarz Adeli, Timothy Colvin, Tonya Grelis and Cameron Munro, as well as our student volunteers. Greg Meagher has been the backbone of our operation, putting in countless hours and energy and being a great mentor to me. The school executive has been very supportive from the beginning and has enabled us to think big.

Turning up to the event at Pymble on Sunday with your friends and family would be a great show of support.  We ask everyone to join us on the day with open hearts, minds and ears to talk to, learn from and celebrate these girls.

Tahmara Thomas (Class of 2022)

We are incredibly proud of Tahmara and the students, staff and family members who are working together to support this event and the establishment of the charity. This is a great example of the power of one; how you can change the world by refusing to look away from people in crisis and choosing to lean into supporting them with hope, love and kindness.

The College has further extended our assistance to the refugee community in Sydney by co-running an after-school activity program for children from Afghanistan and Ukraine in partnership with Barker. Pymble’s involvement is led by Julie Shaw, in her new role as Head of Social Impact. Mrs Shaw would love to hear from any families who may be able to contribute educational items such as books, toys and games for play and learning sessions with the students or volunteer their time to support the program. We intend to build a library of resources the children can borrow and use during the program, which is open to refugee children from all countries. Please feel free to reach out to her  via jshaw@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au if you would like to know more or be involved.

Invitation to our annual Alumni Networking Event

As Tahmara has discovered, changing the world can start with just one idea but often requires a network of support and mentors to help bring it to fruition. Each year in May, the College hosts an event dedicated to supporting the career progression of our younger graduates as part of our ongoing commitment to helping Pymble girls pursue their professional dreams and aspirations after their time with us at school. If you have older daughters who have graduated from Pymble in the last 15 or so years, or you are a former Pymble girl with professional experience to share, please click on the invitation below for to learn more about this year’s Alumni Networking Event. We warmly invite both experienced professionals in our community as well as graduates aged 18 to 35 who are interested in building their professional network and hearing from a range of leaders in industry.

Click here if you would like to attend as a mentee, and click here if you would like to attend as a mentor.

Register now for next week’s Rural Health Careers Forum

For our current students, we continue to rollout a schedule of careers events to help them start thinking about, planning and exploring pathways beyond their Pymble education. Thank you to our Junior School parents who are busy getting ready to showcase their work and professions at the Years 4 to 6 careers day on 17 May – this is such a great age to start talking to our girls about what happens in different workplaces.

For Secondary students interested in a career in Rural Health, we encourage you to attend our annual Rural Health Careers Forum next Thursday 11 May. This is a great opportunity for students and parents to learn about more about health professions in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia and the support provide by the Rural Doctors Network. The evening will provide invaluable insight from ex-Pymble students and an expert panel who have dedicated their lives to the health and wellbeing of those living beyond the big cities.

Capacity is limited so click here to secure your place.

Looking forward to reconnecting with our beautiful Pymble family at these events and on campus throughout the rest of the term. Gosh, it’s good to be home.

The capacity to think creatively is a critical skill our girls will need as they navigate future careers beyond school. As such we continually investigate, through research and professional discussions, how we can integrate creative thinking further into the curriculum.  The English curriculum defines creative thinking as the capacity in children to ‘generate and apply new ideas in specific contexts, seeing existing situations in a new way, identifying alternative explanations, and seeing or making new links that generate a positive outcome’.  Play and playful learning is an easy way for our girls to develop their creative thinking skills.

As we seek to inspire wonder and curiosity in our girls, creativity opportunities have come to the playground this term. With the money generously donated by our JSPG last year, we have purchased some new play equipment and STEM equipment which we introduced last week. Thank you all for your generosity. The girls are loving being able to explore their creativity through play. Play is not just for the youngest children; it’s a crucial tool in the normal development of all children. Children change and experiment whilst they play, they create their own rules and explore what it is like to be in control. Play helps them develop a sense of self and how to interact with others.  When playing, children can explore emotions through the stories they create as they play, without any real consequences. They can also have some control over uncertain situations, often of their own making, allowing them to start developing resilience.

As someone who has always loved the craft of writing, I love seeing our Junior School girls engage enthusiastically in creative writing and the writing process. This term I am lucky enough to be collaborating with girls and their teachers across Year 2, 4 and 6 in their writing journey, and it’s wonderful to watch the girls play with language, explore texts, share ideas and use their experiences to shape their own voice as writers. Thank you for supporting the growth of your daughter as a writer by encouraging her to read widely, to talk about texts, to observe and connect with the world around her, and to make new friends. Experiences like this help enhance our voice and power as a writer.

Our girls have also showcased their creativity with their entries to our Sustainability Art Competition led by our Semester 1 Sustainability Captains, Georgia Friedel and Charlotte Pang. Whilst not everyone can be awarded a certificate, we are immensely proud of the Pymble Spirit shown by each girl who entered an artwork that she had created, and which reflected her passion for the environment. To acknowledge their efforts and courage at sharing their creativity we enjoyed a special morning tea together this week.

House Spirit

This week the girls are celebrating house spirit with a special assembly for Years 3 to 6 on Monday and Kindergarten to Year 2 tomorrow, to officially launch the new house banners and badges. The assembly had a wonderful spirit of magic and pride as the girls celebrated their house and learnt about the history behind their house, its motto and the badge. A formal presentation of the house badge to each girl from her 2023 House Captain forms a key part of this assembly.

This year we are proud to introduce House Champions for each house and thank these teachers who have enthusiastically stepped into this leadership role:

Lang: Miss Rosie Prince

Marden: Miss Penny Charalambous

Thomas: Miss Imogen Kennett

Bennett: Mrs Shaira Musico

Ingleholme: Mrs Nicola Michie

Hammond: Mrs Tracy Reid

Wylie: Mrs Cindy Anderson

Goodlet: Miss Sarah McGeoch

We look forward to many varied opportunities throughout this year, and in future years, for our girls to build strong connection to their house. This term we have our Athletics Carnivals and our inaugural Inter-House Robotics Competition.

Post cards to raise funds for the Welcoming Refugees Project

We are very proud to announce that our Junior School girls have created over 800 postcards for this project. This means over $8,000 has been raised. The Bezos Foundation will be contributing funds for every postcard created. This is a massive effort by our girls.

Careers Day

We still have spots available for parents to showcase their careers to our girls. The event will be for our Year 3 to 6 girls and will take place on Wednesday 17 May, Week 4 from 10.45am to 12.45pm. We will have ‘stalls’ set up in the hall and the library again to showcase the careers. Parents can set up from 10.00am. Parents who wish to participate will be invited to join their daughters for lunch. There is no requirement to stay after 12.45pm, this is merely an invitation.

Please don’t be shy, this is a request from your daughters to find out more about what you do in your day. We look so forward to hearing about your chosen careers. If you are interested in partaking in this initiative, please click here to register.

An invitation to have your say: An invitation to be part of a focus group

I need your help please! I feel very honoured, and deeply challenged, to be co-leading our College’s Social Intelligence strategic focus and looking at how we shape our community. We are determined to foster an inclusive community for all our families to enjoy and in which we all feel safe and valued. I openly say this is a challenge because my cultural background shapes my knowledge base and experiences and I’m trying to broaden these by learning from the stories of others.  As such, I am hoping to work with a wide range of our community, so all perspectives and members of our College family are heard. It is important that we strive for equity of voice, active engagement for all members of our community and a strong sense of our collective citizenship.

There are a number of dates and times available for focus groups to come and share your thoughts with me, so if you are interested, please select the one that suits you.

Well done our Year 7 girls who represented Australia in the Opening ceremony at the Vex Worlds in Robotics. What a wonderful achievement.

Special mention to Addi Woods from Year 8 who competed at the CIS Swim and Diving Championship on Tuesday and has made it through to the State Diving Championship.

This week in Middle School we have launched the Gloucester Gathering schedule for Term 2 with a Dance Competition. You may remember that these are fun activities that occur across lunchtimes on Tuesdays and Thursday and are run by our Middle School Leaders. Everyone is welcome to join in and make new connections. Click here to see the schedule of events. Please encourage your daughters to get involved.

It was also wonderful to see our Middle School girls performing confidently at PAC: Pymble Performing Arts Competition across lunchtimes this week. Well done also to our Chapel Leaders who dramatized the bible message during our Service last week. All girls have been invited to get involved in this initiative in future Chapel Services.

We have been reminding the girls about the expectations around mobile phone use throughout the school day. Students in Middle School are expected to leave their devices in their lockers from 8.15 until 3.20. Thank you to Sophie Beveridge for designing the poster below for our Locker rooms.

On Tuesday I spoke to Year 8 about a National Exchange opportunity that will hopefully role out in Term 3. We have posted an Expressions of Interest link on the Parent Portal. Please fill this in if this is something you and your daughter feel would be appealing. Further information will follow once we get an idea of the possible uptake.

Congratulations to Alannah Tang, Cindy Jin and Leila Rich of Year 8 who have recently published their own books. Yes, an amazing achievement that demonstrates great initiative and perseverance. They completed writing their books independently at the end of last year and were fortunate to be mentored throughout the writing process by the author, Tim Harris.

Congratulations to the following Year 8 girls who received their Medallions for Cross Country this week: Amelia Bicego, Chloe Ayton and Nicole Zhang.

In the spirit of this year’s focus on Pymble Gives Back I would like to acknowledge the commitment of Olivia Randle (07WA) and Abigail Martin(07GA) who in the holidays raised $622 for Vision Australia. Both girls walked 50 km as part of the 100km requirement and were sponsored for their efforts. Well done.

At our Year Assemblies this week Michelle Hunt – Head of Wellbeing – spoke to the girls about Service across the college and encouraged them to log their commitments in order to track their hard work. We are hoping that across the year our Year 7 and 8 students will achieve eight hours of service. There will be many opportunities to engage in Service activities at school.

A message from Mr Riley, Head of Upper School

It has been lovely to see our girls back enjoying the sunshine in our Upper School courtyards this week. I too was fortunate to go out on an expedition with our Year 9s at Vision Valley and look forward to Thursday-Saturday on a trek along the Central Coast. Let’s hope the fine weather continues!

A brief reminder for our Year 10 families to please sign up for the upcoming vaccination program via the MyPymble App. Additionally, a reminder about leave; leave is only granted for illness, bereavement, elite sport or work experience. Vacations should be restricted to the prescribed holiday periods.

Applications for special leave should be completed on the ‘Exemption from Attendance’ form found on MyPymble via the College website and signed by a parent or carer. Forms are to be sent to the respective school office as soon as possible or at least fourteen days in advance of the intended period of leave.

This week, I would like to share the amazing achievements of Grace Peters and Sophia Slater (in addition to the many Upper School girls who attended) at Athletics Nationals in Brisbane over the break, together with Ang-Ya Koo, Sophia Chang and Allison Wang at the Robotics World Championships in Houston.

Hi, my name is Grace Peters. I’m in year 10, and during the holidays I represented NSW at the Australian Track and Field Nationals held in Brisbane from April 14th to 17th, 2023.

The championships were held at QSAC (Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre). This was my third year at nationals, and I always enjoy seeing and competing against other girls from all over Australia, many of whom I have known for quite a few years now. It was great to be able to watch and support my teammates in their events as well.

I competed in the Under 16 women’s discus and shot put and placed 6th in discus and 7th in shot. Not the results I was hoping for, but grateful for my efforts and coaches.

During my time in Brisbane, apart from competing, we went and explored the city and Southbank, which was gorgeous. I went on the Wheel of Brisbane, which gives fantastic views across the entire city of Brisbane.

Written by Grace Peters (Year 10)

In the school holidays, I travelled to Brisbane to compete in the Australian Athletics Junior Championships. The two events I competed in were the 2,000m Steeplechase and the 1500m. The Saturday was an exciting day as I was competing in one of my favourite events – the 2000m Steeplechase.

In the lead up I was very nervous and a bit scared, but I ran a pretty good race and managed a Silver medal which was really exciting and satisfying. The next day my legs were so tired, and I felt really flat in the 1500m. Overall the experience was incredible seeing the talented athletes from all over the country compete across a whole bunch of different events as well as bump into girls that I am getting to know over the years and who have become friends.

It was wonderful to cheer on all of the Pymble girls who competed, and congratulations to those who achieved personal bests or got a medal. Thanks also to my coach Deb Walsham who is so supportive and also Katie Edwards and Mel Gainsford-Taylor who are always so beautiful and encouraging to us girls.

Written by Sophia Slater (Year 10)

Last week, Pymble’s robotics team 6510 Pymble Pride competed at the FRC World Championships in Houston, Texas where our team competed against the best of the best.

The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a high school robotics competition that challenges teams to design, build and program a robot to compete in a unique game every year. This year’s challenge was to score cones and cubes, and balance on platforms. The reality is a lot harder than it sounds!

First, the group travelled to Houston where we had the opportunity to explore the city. The team visited Houston Zoo, the Natural Science Museum of Houston, and the Museum of Fine Arts.

In the days leading up to the competition, we were testing, coding and practising driver skills. Pymble Pride was fortunate enough to be hosted by team 4639, The RoboSpartans at their robotics space.

Now onto the competition itself! It was fierce, but Pymble Pride managed to show determination to navigate through the mechanical and code issues that arose. The level of calibre accumulated in one event space was incredible, each team showcasing a unique engineering approach to the game.

All in all, the FRC World Championships was a wonderful opportunity to learn from teams all around the globe and share our perspectives, as well as make new friends along the way. It was an invaluable experience for all 24 girls who attended.

Congratulations to Amber Li!

Amber Li (Year 9) received a Gold Medal in April for the Australian Maths Olympiad, completed in February of this year. She was one of 20+ students (Years 9 to 12) who were invited to attend the AMO Camp in Melbourne in the April school holidays. This was a highly rewarding experience; Amber was able to delve into many maths topics in depth which are not taught at school.

The goal of this camp is to be selected as one of six students to represent Australia at International AMO. Amber was not successful in being selected this year. She is currently studying Year 12 Extension 1 and 2. Amber’s goal for next year is to study University level maths in 2024, potentially at UNSW.

Service Opportunities

Year 11 students have been invited to participate in the Red Shield Appeal, in support of the Salvation Army. All students are being asked if they can support the Balmoral Burn, with funds being raised for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation. All details for how to engage in these activities are available on the student portal.

From the Deputy Head of Senior School – Ms Patricia Gallardo

As the application process for university begins, I would like to highlight the Educational Access Scheme (EAS). The aim of the EAS scheme is to help those students, whose education has been negatively affected during Year 11 and Year 12, receive a university offer. To apply for EAS students must be able to demonstrate that, as a result of circumstances beyond their control or choosing, their studies have been negatively affected for at least six months during Year 11 and/or Year 12.

The University Admission Centre processes applications for admission into university which calculates the students’ ATAR and processes applications for EAS for entry into university.

Students received information on this subject at their Year assembly this week as it is the student’s responsibility to log in to their application and start this process. For further information please click here.

In the year of Pymble Gives Back, our Boarders are exploring ways that they can ‘pay it forward’ and contribute to those in need. On Tuesday night we were delighted to welcome Lyn Braico from the Country Women’s Association (CWA) who opened a world of possibility for our generous Boarders. This wonderful organisation has been supporting women, children and their communities for over 100 years and there was much excitement about ways in which our Pymble Boarders can be involved. Our Community Engagement Prefect, Indi Tishler, will be leading the discussion about opportunities and I look forward to sharing our plans in the near future.

Another fabulous day at Hillbilly Cider

A real highlight of the Love It program is our visit to the home turf of Year 7 and 8 Boarders, Cleo and Leander McLaughlin. Fellow Year 8 Boarder, Phoebe Pockley shares the joy below:

This weekend, we went to Bilpin in the Blue Mountains where we went apple picking and visited the McLaughlin’s pizza and cider shed. Eighteen of us headed up to Bilpin with Mr and Mrs Burgess. When we arrived, we went to Shield’s Orchid to go apple picking.

This was a really great experience as we learnt how to pick the right apples, learning which ones were ripe and getting the perfect ones to take back to share with our Boarding sisters. After we were all pleased with the apples that we got, we headed just down the road to the pizza and cider shed. It was overcast but we managed to miss most of the rain and we had the best time.

We all had a taste of their non-alcoholic cider which everyone thoroughly enjoyed, and a share of pizza, particularly the Apple Calzone with cream, which was definitely the favourite for all of us. This Love It activity has been one of the best yet and the bus trip there was most definitely worth it, a special thanks to Shane and Tessa who supplied all the pizza and cider, organised the trip and made it all happen.

It’s not too late to come and see us in Dubbo!

This weekend team Pymble will be in Dubbo for the Boarding Expo. I will be joined by the wonderful Clair Stock and Jackie Garment, along with Boarder extraordinaire, Grace Peters. We would love to see you either at the Expo or at our event on Friday 5 May at Press. Please click below to RSVP if you are going to join us at Press.

Get ready for Garden Party!

Planning is underway for our 2023 Boarders’ Produce Stall and we are looking for volunteers to be involved in this most special event on the Boarding calendar. I am delighted to report that the wonderful Kylie Levy has once again offered to lead our efforts as our Boarding Garden Party Convenor. If you are interested in being involved please email Kylie at k_levy@bigpond.com. More details will follow soon.

Love It – Mrs White

As mentioned above, last weekend was a stellar weekend for Love It. Besides the apple picking, we also had two other wonderful events. The first was a Mother’s Day creations workshop with Mrs Myles. Hopefully some of the creations make their way home in the next week or so.  On Saturday night we had 20 Boarders head out to Homebush to watch the Sydney Swifts take on the GWS Giants in the Super Netball. It was a special night, with our very own Year 12 Boarder Grace Whyte playing in the pre-match.

This weekend is our Community Weekend for Term 2, and we have lots of exciting events planned. We begin the weekend with our annual Year 7 to 9 Social, welcoming Knox, Shore, Abbotsleigh, Wenona, Loreto Normanhurst, Ravenswood and Ascham to the event. The Boarders have been spending time this week planning their outfits under the theme of ‘Famous Groups’.

Saturday night we will be hosting the very popular Just Dance event, followed by our Community Church Service on Sunday with Pymble Gordon Uniting Church. Following Sunday brunch, the girls will be heading to the gym for the Angus Cup Bench Ball competition before attending the Afghan Cultural and Football Festival hosted by the College.

View From My Window

Hi! I’m Airiana. I was new to Pymble last term, I’m in Year 11 and freshly turned 16. I started learning the violin when I was 3 but if you heard my playing back then, let’s just say you’d have a collection of earplugs by now like my parents do, allegedly!

My parents are really supportive of me, they’re currently back in Hong Kong. I lived there pretty much my whole life and the past four generations of my family are all there. My uncle has a small farm in a rural area of Hong Kong and we love helping them harvest radishes on a seasonal basis.

I am an only child and I only had one cousin for the first decade of my life until secondary school where suddenly, three of them came out of nowhere. My first cousin, Libby, is the closest thing I have to a sibling. She’s a huge Disney fan which is why a bunch of my old Disney toys are probably laying around in her bedroom right now.

As a city girl, it’s hard to see even one star in the Hong Kong sky so the first time I saw so many stars here, it got me so excited and I wanted to take many pictures and send it to my parents. I definitely miss my family a lot but I’m also really grateful to be here at Pymble to grow and experience new opportunities.

Boarder of the Week

Congratulations to our fabulous Boarder of the week, Madeleine (Mads) Gaden. Mads is a much-loved member of our Year 7 cohort who joins us from Dunedoo in the Warrumbungle region of Central West NSW. She has been an exemplary member of our Boarding family from her very first day.

Mads is kind and caring of other people’s feelings. She exudes ‘Pymble Pride’ wearing her uniform with care and maintaining an organised and beautiful Boarding bedroom. She is committed to her studies, working hard in our Learn It program and balancing her many commitments.

Mads is an accomplished horsewoman and competes in equestrian events at a national level, most recently winning the Childs Grand National Galloway Championship at the Show Horse Council of Australasia Grand Nationals. We couldn’t be more proud of her!

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

It has been a great honour this term to take on the role of Assistant Chaplain, alongside the Rev. Punam Bent. It is an honour because this work is focused on the nurturing of the spiritual life of the College, and I cannot think of anything more important than this.

I love to see the students in Chapel, and to know that it is a welcoming space for all of them, whatever their faith background or spiritual practice. Our Chapel is the heart of the College, both physically and metaphorically, and it provides a space where at least once a week each student can slow down, pause, pray or simply reflect on some of the bigger questions of life.

I remember sitting in Chapel as a Pymble student myself, looking up at the sun shining through the beautiful stained glass windows. Those times in Chapel gave me an anchor and a safe place at school, amidst all the busyness and ups and downs of teenagehood.

I strongly believe that we are not merely physical, intellectual and emotional beings – we are also spiritual creatures who yearn for spiritual sustenance and peace.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin was a French philosopher, palaeontologist and Jesuit priest who thought deeply about the way our spirit, our soul, connects us with the Divine. He wrote that “we are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

His words resonate strongly with me because they pull me out of today’s present, physical, immediate reality and remind me that there is another spiritual reality that we are a part of.

Working alongside Rev. Punam Bent is a great joy. I look forward to the year ahead, as together we strive to spiritually nourish and support the Pymble community. I pray that all of us can somehow acknowledge the spiritual in ourselves.

And may the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

HSC Timetable Released

The HSC Written Examination Timetable has been released and in assembly this week, we spoke to Year 11 and 12 about preparing for the HSC and examinations in Term 3. Why now?

The earlier students start planning for exams which test understanding of a large amount of content, the less stressful they are. The more consistently they review their work, the longer it is retained. Students will often say ‘I need to learn my work at the last minute otherwise I will forget it’ – a strategy that may work for a small amount of information but impossible when preparing for an exam.

In their study skills lesson for this term, Year 11 and 12 were taught to be considerate of their cognitive load, the limited ‘slots’ of working memory and the importance of sleep and retrieval practice in building long term memories. Below is a graph of the Forgetting Curve. It demonstrates that the rate of forgetting something you have studied once is steep but becomes less steep upon repetition. This is the basis of the study strategy called retrieval practice. Research shows that the arrangement of exams in the timetable has little impact on results. All the hard work is done in the lead up to exam periods.

Preparing some flash cards, mind maps or annotated diagrams that they review regularly over the year enables those ideas to be recalled easily during an exam, plus aids in their progress in terms of depth of understanding of the course as a whole. Students who are successful in exams are not only able to recall information but are able to see the connection between concepts and ideas and apply their knowledge.

The Year 12 Trial examinations will take place in Week 3 and 4 of Term 3

(Monday 31 July to Friday 11 August)

Study Camp – Preparation for Trial Examinations

Last year over 170 Pymble students came to our study camp and the feedback from students indicated this was of high impact in their preparation for Trials. The dates for our study camp are below.

Monday 26 June to Friday 30 June (first week of the holidays)

Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Book in for help with teachers and/or alumni
  • Study in a supervised environment
  • Complete 3 hour practice exams in a mock exam room
  • Have individual appointments with Mrs Stanfield and Ms Wawryka for study planning and ATAR estimates

Click here to register for Study Camp

Parents and students are encouraged to register early so we can plan for the number and variety of teachers required and catering. Students design how they wish to spend their time during study camp. They can come in and out of study camp to work on major works if they wish.

After Hours Study – Term 2

Free tutoring by our experienced HSC teachers from 4-6pm in the KM atrium continues this term. Students are encouraged to book in on the sign up sheets near the JLT to secure a time in advance.

Paid Supervisors for Year 11 and 12 Examinations

Each year we employ invigilators to supervise examinations. This is a paid role and would suit retired teachers or any interested adult who would be available for the two week examination periods or part thereof. Training and guidance will be provided by our curriculum staff and experienced invigilators. A current working with children check number (WWCC) is required.

If you or any friends or relatives would be interested, please email curriculum@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au

2023 Events

All College community events can be viewed in the MyPymble app from the calendar tab. You can also view our calendar for Semester 1 by clicking here. This month we are looking forward to catching up with some of our community at our annual Alumni Networking Event at KPMG (more details below).

Alumni Events – Calling Potential Community Mentors

On Thursday 18 May we are hosting our annual Alumni Mentoring Event at KPMG in Barangaroo. This event helps to connect recent Alumni aged 18 to 35 years with mentors (from our Alumni and parent community), cultivating relationships that can support their careers post-Pymble. The event is proudly sponsored by the Ex-Students Union (ESU).

We are inviting Pymble parents, carers and ex-students over 35 years who have a passion for their industry to register as a mentor for the evening. There is no formal speech requirement for mentors; we will create relaxed, industry-based ‘breakout hubs’ where mentors and mentees can chat informally following the guest speaker presentations.

The evening will also provide an opportunity to forge professional network connections across a variety of industries and organisations. A light supper will be served.

If you would like to register as a Mentor, please click here.

If you would like to register as a Mentee (18 to 35 year olds) please click here.

For more information please contact: Katrina Corcoran, Alumni Relations Manager at kcorcoran@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au or Fiona Walmsley, ESU President at pymble.exstudents@gmail.com

Alumni News

We know many of our parents and carers are ex-Pymble students and we are happy to share with you the latest copy of our Alumni e-newsletter, the Jacaranda Post. For those non-Pymble ex-students, this newsletter is a wonderful summary of what our graduates are doing post-Pymble.

Parent Coffee Catch-Ups

The work of the Community Engagement team is immensely supported by the Pymble Parent Association (PPA). In particular, we’d like to extend our gratitude and thanks to the sub-school Parent Support Groups and volunteer parents for enthusiastically facilitating coffee catch-ups, morning teas and dinners across Term 1 and into Term 2.

These smaller events, which are either held in restaurants, cafes, local parks or private homes, are a great way to welcome new parents and build current friendships throughout the school year. Keep your eye out on social and chat groups for these events.

2023 Cultural Community Event – Dragon Boat Dinner Tickets On Sale Now

All College families are warmly invited to the 2023 Cultural Festival celebrating the diversity of our Pymble community. Each year the festival will spotlight the customs of a different cultural community; in 2023 we are celebrating the Double Fifth or Dragon Boat holiday, stemming from the history and heritage of our Chinese families. The event will feature craft activities, a cocktail dinner and musical performances.

Date: Friday 21 July

Time: 5.30pm

Venue: Main Hall, Pymble Ladies’ College

RSVP: Thursday 22 June

Please note: Siblings are welcome at this event.

Garden Party – Portobello Road Markets

We are delighted to invite the College community to express their interest in holding a stall at the Portobello Road Markets at this year’s Garden Party.

Please note that the Portobello Road Markets allocations are limited and, as such, registering your interest today does not confirm a position. Once a convenor of Portobello Road Markets has been appointed, they will be in touch in mid-July with further instructions.

To send an expression of interest, please click here.

In the coming weeks we will also be seeking the assistance of parents to run various PPA stalls which will be raising funds for two of our 2023 College charities; The Smith Family and Dignity. To find out more please contact us at events@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au

Enrolments Tour of Regional NSW

Across Term 2 our Enrolments team will be travelling around country NSW in order to showcase the College to potential regional Boarding families. This week we venture out to Dubbo for the Boarding Schools Expo, while later this month we will be hosting a stall at the Sydney Boarding Schools Rural Expo, the Griffith Pop-Up and Wagga Wagga and Young Boarding Schools Expos.

This country road trip is an excellent opportunity to highlight the many attributes of our College and the opportunities afforded by an education at Pymble. We absolutely love visiting our country families!

From the Co-curricular Performing Arts Team

This week has seen the Pymble Arts community in full throttle.

The iconic amphitheatre in the heart of the Secondary School has resonated with the performances of students from Years 7 to 12 with passionate, compelling and often courageous performances in the annual PAC event which has been recognised and celebrated with standing-room-only audiences at every lunchtime performance this week.

Hats must be doffed in respect to the PAC Prefects, Piper Markson and Claire Oslington, who have expertly and independently led this event.

Various venues around the school have reverberated with the musical and dancing rhythms of students involved in the Dance intensive weekend. It was a privilege to witness many of the rehearsals which culminated in the exciting progress final concert on Sunday night attended by hundreds of family supporters.

Drama classes and competitions under the leadership of Sarah Boyd continue apace in exciting directions and the many competition events of Language Arts are in the initial stages of preparation.

Anchors away and full steam ahead for Term 2!

Dance

The Eisteddfod Intensive Weekend took place last weekend and was filled with workshops, rehearsals and activities for the girls to develop their skills and teamwork.

To kick off the weekend, the girls received their costumes which got them excited for the weekend, and on Friday night an informative session was held to discuss the upcoming USA Dance Tour for 2024. The girls then enjoyed their first workshop, ‘Dance Cheer’, where they learnt fundamental cheer skills, tricks, and dance cheer movements. The girls had so much fun and loved learning a new style, by guest teacher Hannah from Applause Entertainment.

Throughout the weekend, the dancers dedicated themselves to their routines, rehearsing tirelessly in their choreography sessions, receiving guidance from Dr Sly, who gave the girls a presentation on training load, injury prevention, nutrition, and body image.

The Dance Captains, Claire and Georgia, ran a fun and interactive Trivia Workshop, where they covered several questions on array of topics including questions on their dance teachers! The weekend also included training sessions on floor work skills, and strength and flexibility classes that focused on building musical strength and stretching exercises, ran by guest teacher Miss Isabella Stanfield. The Dance Vision Workshop ran by Miss Cluff, involved a brainstorming session on ideas for Pymble’s new Dance Centre, and the Juniors dancers received valuable training on what it means to part of the Eisteddfod Team, and had a Hair and Makeup Session to prepare themselves for competitions.

The weekend concluded with a viewing of all the routines in the Gillian Moore Centre for Performing Arts which left everyone astounded by the high standard of dancing displayed, as the girls cheered each other on from the audience.

Overall, it was a successful and productive weekend, and the dancers should be very proud of their hard work, passion, and dedication, as they look forward to the Eisteddfod Season ahead!

Round 1 of igsa Basketball

Round 1 of IGSA basketball saw our Pymble girls raring to go, and with only one practice session under our belt, the girls did well overall. Our Year 7 Firsts got a win in their first Senior School basketball experience. Our Senior firsts got a thrilling win over Wenona by just two points. Pymble 15, in their first Senior School basketball experience, got an intense one-point win at St Vincent’s college. Very proud of these girls and their coach Nate Cassar as away wins are always harder than home wins! Our Pymble 12 team won a convincing 64 to 11 win at Abbotsleigh and our Pymble 7 team also won a convincing 41 to 14 away win at Queenwood.

All in all, the future of Pymble Basketball looks bright!

2023 NSW Pathways Eights – Interstate Schools Regatta

During the holidays, seven members of the Rowing team trial took part in the NSW pathways crews to represent NSW in the Interstate Schools Regatta from Thursday 27 to Friday 28 April 2023.

Mia Booth (Year 11), Jessica Colbran (Year 12), Megan Wood (Year 11) and Tilly Morgan (Year 12) were all selected into the NSW Firsts Crew, coached by our Head Coach, Ali Williams.

Charlotte Hartin (Year 12), Alessandra Braysich (Year 11) and Serena Leung (Year 12) were all selected into the NSW Seconds Crew, coached by Pymble coach, Ben Booker.

The crews trained through the holidays in preparation racing the Heat on Thursday 27 April where the Firsts crew had a strong win qualifying for the A final, and the seconds crew having a tough battle to just miss out on the A final and progress through to the B final.

The finals were raced on Friday 28 April, where the Seconds crew had an awesome race winning the B final by open water, following the B final the Firsts crew had a cracking race battling with Victoria the whole way down the course just missing first and finishing second overall.

Well done to our Pymble girls for representing NSW.

From the PPA

From the PPA

Welcome back to Term 2 at Pymble! We trust your girls have now settled into their school routine and are enjoying the cooler weather.

Mother’s Day Morning Tea

To all our mums and carers, we thank you for being a wonderful role model for our girls. You are brave, gracious and beautiful both inside and out. To celebrate Mother’s Day please join us for our annual gathering with your amazing girls on Friday 12 May 2023 from 10.15 am to 11.15 am on Main Oval. Click here to register – ticket sales close today.

The girls are encouraged to wear Mufti dress in their house colours for a gold coin donation towards our charity for Mother’s Day Wayside Chapel.

Vision Valley

We currently have the third and largest group of adventurers from Pymble and St Ignatius’ College Riverview at Vision Valley, happily completing their residential program.

It is an incredible feat for our girls to register and attend this program. For some it will be their first time away from home and for others who are used to travelling and trekking it will be second nature to them. From our the entire community, well done and congratulations to all our students who have participated.

The residential program is pivotal in helping our girls develop not only their mental and physical resilience but their emotional intelligence and cognitive and social skills in a natural environment. It is a period where they are learning practical life skills, such as doing the laundry and building shelters to developing their creative thinking by putting together plays and musicals.

Rather than learning these things on social media and entertainment platforms like TikTok and YouTube they are learning how to develop their potential in real life scenarios, with real people, in relaxed surroundings.

Click here to read a great article from The Australian newspaper as to the benefits of students participating in Vision Valley Residential Program.

Annual feedback surveys for parents and students

Annual feedback surveys for parents and students

As part of the College’s continual improvement process, MMG has been commissioned to conduct the annual reviews from parents and students. These surveys give us the chance to receive feedback so we can build on our strengths and prioritise areas of focus. Whilst doing surveys takes time, we are eager to use the research-informed feedback from parents and students and are very appreciative of each response.

Parents of students in Year 3, 5, 8, 10 and 12 would have already received their personal email with a link to the MMG ‘Tracking’ survey. This voluntary survey takes about half an hour. It invites parents to share feedback on areas including academics, wellbeing, boarding, co-curricular activities, sport and leadership. If parents are in one of the target year groups and have not received a personal email with a link by Friday 5 May, please let me know.

Students in Year 5 completed their surveys this week, and students in Years 8, 10 and 12 will do theirs in the next couple of weeks. Students will be supervised in Mind, Body, Spirit time to do their survey but the surveys are voluntary to complete.

In Term 3, students from Year 6 to 12 will be invited to complete the MMG Wellbeing survey. This survey goes into greater depth than the Tracking survey which also includes some wellbeing questions. Further information will be shared in Term 3.

At the conclusion of the research period, MMG Education compiles final reports for the College. In months ahead, we look forward to sharing insights from the research with the community.

Please remember, that by completing the questionnaires, parents and students are making an invaluable contribution to the future of the College as we strive to ensure that we are providing the best opportunities possible for our students.

Thank you for your feedback and contribution.
