From the Principal

From the Principal

Last night’s Secondary School Ensemble Concert was just incredible. The singers, musicians, conductors, event organisers, technicians, the weather and our magnificent Gloucester Lawn all combined to deliver a sensational, albeit mildly chilly, finale to the term. Thank you to the students and staff for the many hours you dedicate to your craft and thank you to their biggest fans – our dedicated Music Support Group, parents and carers – for being such engaged supporters of your daughters’ gifts and talents. We are very proud of our Music Program, which is a credit to our Pymble family.

Family has been on my mind for the past couple of weeks, as I have been reflecting on time spent recently with our Boarding community in country NSW. When speaking to students about this experience, I asked them to raise their hands if they have been to a couple of the 11 stops Matt and I made on this trip, and then to raise their hands if they had been to Europe. It was interesting to note most students have visited Europe, but only a handful have seen Bourke or Nyngan. As you head into the holidays or consider planning your next family vacation, you might like to consider showing your children parts of our beautiful country that they have never experienced before. There are so many unique and fascinating things to see, do and learn about in our own backyard; you would also be doing a wonderful thing by investing in regional and rural Australia.

Before we say farewell for our two-week break, I wanted to give a huge shout-out to our girls for their willingness to embrace all the opportunities on offer in Term 1.

The culture of ‘having a go’ is an important component of learning at Pymble. It has been wonderful to see Pymble Pulse in action this term, with students encouraging each other to show up and cheer on their friends and peers in their co-curricular sports and activities – not just for the wins and awards, but for having the courage to try new things and work on new skills. It’s been gratifying to see our student body come together in this way and demonstrate the strength and unity of our Pymble family.

Just as we have ‘written’ and ‘unwritten rules’ of what we expect of each other in our own families, so too is it important for our community to establish guidelines around how we expect each other to show up. We love how our community is always keen to give feedback and share with us the importance of our College values – in fact, our values are frequently highlighted by parents as one of the key reasons why you chose this school for your daughter(s).

Next term, we will be focusing on the development of our Pymble Values Project and looking to draft an agreement to define values-based expectations for all in our community: students, staff, parents, siblings and carers. Thank you in advance to our parent representatives who will be working with us on this agreement.

You’re invited to our inaugural Pymble Foundation annual update

We are delighted to see our Pymble family has grown this year with the introduction of three new students who recently arrived in Australia as refugees from Afghanistan. What a gift they are to our school community; we are learning so much from their courage, dignity and wisdom. Our four refugee girls’ education and place in our Pymble family have been made possible by our Pymble Foundation and our generous community. Our hope was to offer an additional two refugee students places at Pymble from 2025 but, sadly at this time, our Scholarship Fund does not have the surplus required. If supporting this program is of interest to you, please come along to our Pymble Foundation event on Wednesday May 1 2024, or feel free to contact our Foundation team directly, via Foundation@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au.

The event will include a Site Tour of the Grey House Precinct development, an update from our Foundation Chair, Mr Simon Rothery, and reflections from one of our new students from Afghanistan, and one of our First Nations Scholarships graduates. We hope to see you there.

Please click here to RSVP.

Finally, as we wish you a happy, safe and restorative break from routine with your loved ones, please enjoy this beautiful definition of ‘family’ from Oprah Winfrey. Thank you for your ongoing support of the College and all we do, and we look forward to welcoming our students back here for the first day of Term 2 on Tuesday 30 April.

“Family should be the place where you can be your most complete self. Where you’re accepted and appreciated, seen and valued, even in moments of disagreement. It should be your soft place to fall, the place where you’re reminded that no matter what happens to you, in the face of your deepest challenges, you are loved.”

Windows into Learning

A big thank you to our wonderful academic staff from Kindergarten to Year 12 who have been kindly sharing stories of lightbulb moments in learning across all areas of the College in Term 1. This week, it’s lovely to see one of our students celebrated for bringing an idea come to life, and to hear more details about a workshop with an award-winning writer at last week’s Sharing Stories Festival.

Junior School Wellbeing Day

“Earlier in Term 1, a student asked if I could supervise her Paper Recycling Club, which is her own initiative from an activity she saw during theholidays. Not only did she organise friends and others who were interested to join in, but she ran the whole rotation for her cohort during our recent Wellbeing Day. The support from her friends and the school allowed her idea to come alive and be shared and has already inspired a number of other students to come forward with their ideas. It was amazing to see a student confidently lead a new task, idea, and way of thinking to all those in Year 5.”

K-12 Sharing Stories Festival – Author Workshop

“As part of the Sharing Stories Festival, best-selling author Tania Blanchard gave a fascinating talk on the process of writing historical fiction novels for Year 12 History Extension students and College staff. Tania explained that all her works (The Girl From Munich, Suitcase of Dreams, Letters From Berlin, Daughter of Calabria and A Woman of Courage) are inspired by her own family history. Family photographs often spark ideas, and she starts looking for relevant primary sources in the form of birth and death certificates, family letters, newspaper articles and oral accounts. She then embarks on secondary research to fill in details.

“Students asked inspired questions that stimulated some wonderful historical debate. Topics ranged from the validity of historical fiction as a form of investigating the past, to the balance between historical accuracy and the need to engage and entertain readers. The delicate question of unearthing family secrets was also broached.

“This was a valuable experience centred around one of the core foci of the Extension course: evaluating different approaches to history and the complexity of factors that shape historical interpretations.”

Term 2 Bus Registrations: Important changes

Term 2 Bus Registrations: Important changes

Pymble regularly reviews our services in response to parent feedback, to improve efficiencies and minimise our energy consumption in line with our College sustainability goals.

As such, we are pleased to announce two new trial bus services for the Northern Beaches in Term 2. These services will be shared between Pymble, Barker College and Abbotsleigh. If successful, we envisage that the two additional transport options will be made permanent.

There are no changes to Bus Routes 1, 2 and 3

Changes for Bus 4 and Bus 5

1.  Introduction of a new Early AM and Evening Bus Service

Introduction of two new services along the Northern Beaches (Bus 4) route, which will be shared between Pymble, Barker College and Abbotsleigh:

(a)  an Early AM bus, arriving at the College at 6.41am

(b)  an Evening bus, departing the College at 5.00pm (departure at 5.10pm on Monday evenings)

2.    Introduction of a shared-service model with local schools

Our existing Bus 4 on the Northern Beaches route will become a shared service between Pymble, Barker College and Abbotsleigh from Avalon to Austlink in Belrose. From there, Pymble students will transfer to Bus 5 which will then make its way to the College. The arrival time of 8.00am remains unchanged.

A similar transfer will apply to the regular afternoon route departing the College at 3.35pm.

3.    Changes to stops on Lower Northern Beaches route (Bus 5)

We have also taken this opportunity to review our Lower Northern Beaches bus route (Bus 5) and amended some of our stops based on usage and demand, including the introduction of a bus stop at the Fairlight shops.

4.    St Ives bus stops now changed from Bus 4 to Bus 5 on the regular morning and afternoon routes

Finally, our existing St Ives stops will move from Northern Beaches Bus 4 to Lower Northern Beaches Bus 5 on the regular morning and afternoon routes. Please note that for the new Early AM and Evening service, students for St Ives will board Bus 4.

Please refer to the full timetable here.

Who will be affected by these changes?

The changes will only impact families who currently use, or would like to use, the Northern Beaches service (Bus 4) and the Lower Northern Beaches service (Bus 5).

How will the new shared bus service work?

In the mornings, students on the regular Northern Beaches Bus 4 will disembark at Austlink in Belrose where they will make a simple transfer onto the Lower Northern Beaches Bus 5, bringing all students to Pymble.

In the afternoons, students for both Bus Route 4 and 5 will board Lower Northern Beaches Bus 5. The bus will stop at Austlink in Belrose where Northern Beaches Bus 4 passengers will transfer onto the shared Pymble, Barker and Abbotsleigh bus towards Avalon.

Please note CDC Charters will provide a marshal at the Austlink stop to ensure that all students are safely transferred onto the correct buses. Students will also remain seated on the first bus until their connecting bus arrives.

In addition, CDC Charters will provide a marshal onboard the shared bus services in the first week of Term 2 to ensure that the trip runs smoothly as students adjust to the shared services.

The new early morning and evening services will start and finish their journey at Pymble, via Abbotsleigh and Barker College to and from Avalon. There will be no transfer at Austlink on these services.

What does the new shared bus look like?

The new shared bus is a coach similar to the standard Pymble-branded buses. It is white in colour with the Pymble, Barker and Abbotsleigh logos emblazoned on the side.

An image is included below.

How will the early morning/evening service work?

The early AM bus will depart Avalon at 5.50am and arrive at Pymble at 6.41am. It will then continue to drop students off at Abbotsleigh and Barker College. This service will have a co-branded bus with signage of all three schools.

The evening service will depart Pymble at 5.00pm (departure from Pymble at 5.10pm on Monday evenings) before making its way to Avalon via Abbotsleigh and Barker College. It is scheduled to arrive at the last stop at 6.30pm (or 6.45pm on Monday evenings). This will also be a co-branded bus.

Please refer to our website for more information.

What will the cost be for these changed services?

As we have been able to consolidate and share resources and costs with Abbotsleigh and Barker College, we have managed to keep registration fees at the current price of $430 per term for our Term Registrations and $7.50 per trip for Flexible Registrations.

When can I register my daughter for Term 2?

Term 2 bus registrations are open now.

While CDC Charters has advised that all current bus users across the three schools will be accommodated, we encourage you to only select the days your daughter/s will need to catch the bus so that we can accommodate as many families as possible.

We also encourage you to register early to avoid disappointment, as spots on our bus services are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. To view the changed timetables and to register, please click here.

Can I register my daughter for a combination of the Early AM/Evening and regular Northern Beaches bus service?

Yes, but seats will be limited, and we encourage all parents to only select the days and times your daughter will definitely need to catch the bus so that we can accommodate as many families as possible.

What if I cannot register my daughter for all the days/times she needs?

You will have the option to register for the waitlist if your preferred days/times are not available. We will then contact you as soon as a seat becomes available

What if my requirements change throughout the term?

You may log in to the registration form through the MyPymble parent portal at any point throughout the term to change your required days. Please keep this information accurate to ensure that we can accommodate as many families as possible. Please note that you may only cancel full-term registrations in the first week of term.

I want to register my daughter for St Ives bus stops. Which bus do I choose?

Our St Ives stops will move from Bus 4 to Bus 5 on the regular routes. Please select Bus 5 on the registration form for St Ives stops.

To register for our Early AM and Evening services, St Ives stops will remain on the Bus 4 route.

If you would like to register your daughter to travel to/from St Ives on both the regular routes (Bus 5) and the new early AM/Evening routes (Bus 4), please register for one and contact collegeservices@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au for assistance to add the additional service to your registration.

Please do not hesitate to contact College Services if you have any further questions about transport to and from Pymble Ladies’ College.

This week our phenomenal music teachers provided us a Windows into Learning with the chance to attend a series of open rehearsals. Thank you to all of you who were able to come and see your daughter’s dedication to her music through listening to her rehearsal. A huge shout out to Mr Kurt Schweinberger and our Performing Arts team who lead such exceptional music and performance learning for our girls.

Pymble Proud as a group of Year 5 girls connect with country

I am very proud of a group of Year 5 girls who are on a service-learning opportunity this week by immersing themselves in learning alongside the students at Brewarrina Central School. Ninety-seven per cent of the students at this school are Aboriginal and the town sits 800 kilometres northwest of Sydney on land owned traditionally by the Ngemba, Ualarai, Murrawarri and Wailwan people. I drove out to Dubbo on Sunday to surprise the girls on their way to Brewarrina and we spent a wonderful evening together at Dubbo Zoo where we had an evening guided tour through the zoo.

Whilst the girls are in Brewarrina, they will work collaboratively with the students at the local school to plant saplings and connect with country through that shared project.

A huge shout out to the three teachers, Mrs Emily Clutterham, Ms Gabby Gunson and Ms Meagan Bartlett, who are guiding the girls through this experience.

Congratulations to our e-Sports legends

This week Mya Aggarwal, Elaine Liu (Year 5), Isabelle Yeh and Salma Hassan (Year 6) participated in an e-Sports competition and performed exceptionally well progressing to the quarter finals. Many of our girls had not played the game before so they were justifiably proud of their fabulous results.

A huge thank you to Mr Jake Turnbull and Miss Thomasina Buchner who support the girls in e-Sports and cheered them on in the competition. I am particularly proud to hear how our girls were the most supportive and encouraging students at the competition #PymbleProud!

Holidays are here!

As we come to the end of Term 1, I want to wish you all a wonderful holiday. For those of you travelling, I wish you safe travels and special memory-making moments wherever you go. For those who, like me, are looking forward to a stay-cation, I hope you have many wonderful adventures and lots of relaxation time in and around your homes.

This term we have focused on kindness to self and as I have said to the girls it’s really important, they use the term break to relax and re-energise ready for the term ahead. The girls have worked so hard over the last 11 weeks and they deserve, and need, space and time to rest and be ready for the many new learning challenges of next term.

Thank you all for your care and trust this term and for your constant support and respect to our amazing Junior School teachers.

Happy holidays!

A message from Mrs Lara Bird – Deputy Head of Junior School – Academic

This term our Junior School girls have been immersed in learning opportunities to build their academic knowledge and skills. As a Junior School we notice each student for the strengths that she brings to school, her areas for growth, as well as her passions and interests. We are Pymble proud of our girls for continuing to challenge themselves and have a go, often stepping outside their comfort zone in their learning.  Well done girls on a great term of learning.

A message from our Year 6 Kindness Leaders – Safina Burgess, Melody Chen, Ria Iyer, Chloe Morrison

On Tuesday the four Kindness Leaders, alongside Mrs Giles and Mrs Musico, visited the Westmead Children’s Hospital. We met with the doctors and social workers of the HARK Refugee Clinic and gave them the stationery and school supplies that our generous K-2 girls and families had donated.

We were so proud that there were over 90 satchels of school supplies to donate. We enjoyed learning from the clinic that these children who will get the packs arrive in Australia with nothing and were sad that they did not have any items to help them at school.

We enjoyed the experience thoroughly and we are grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the HARK refugee clinic and help spread the kindness from our K-2 families to them.

From the Middle School

From the Middle School

As we draw to the close of our first term for 2024, I’d like to congratulate all of the Middle School students on their achievements within the classroom and on the sporting fields. It has been a busy and productive time in which the girls have stepped up to opportunities, embraced challenges and consolidated friendships. Year 7 in particular has already established a proud reputation as keen and enthusiastic members of our Pymble community. The team has been impressed by the way they have taken things in their stride and made a very successful transition to high school. Thank you to all of our Middle School families for your support and encouragement of your daughters over the last 11 weeks.

I would like to particularly thank our Middle School team – our administration staff, our Heads of Year and the Deputy Head of Middle School – for their dedication to ensuring that the girls have felt supported and cared for throughout the term.

In the past week, Year 7 had the opportunity to join an author talk with Maryam Master, author of No Words and Exit Through the Gift Shop as part of the Sharing Stories Festival organised by our Library team. Maryam’s debut novel Exit Through the Gift Shop was shortlisted for Book of the Year in the Younger Readers category in 2022 by the CBCA. Her latest book is No Words, a uniquely narrated, moving story about a young refugee trying to find his place in the world.

I wanted to share with you some of the student feedback comments from the Year 7 Outdoor Education program which sum up the benefits of this important experience. We found many consistent themes across the year group which acknowledged individuals conquering their fears, facing new challenges and most of all, establishing new friendships and bonds with their Compass groups.

“I loved the Leap of Faith because I was proud of myself that I touched the ball!”

“I enjoyed the hike the most because I could see gorgeous views and I experienced different challenges during the hike. I can also share this experience with my dad.”

“The dinners because the food was really good, and the crate stacking was really fun and made us use our thinking skills.”

“I enjoyed doing activities with my friends because we could understand more of their strengths and do more teamwork with one another. My favourite activity out of all of them was rock climbing. I have always loved rock climbing and try to use more power on the legs.”

“I liked the team challenge activities because it helped me make new friends from interacting with people I usually don’t talk to. It also encouraged me to learn about new things, step out of my comfort zone by trying new activities, and work on building my teamwork and group collaboration skills. It was very fun.”

“I enjoyed hanging out with my friends the most because it gave me some more time to bond with them. One of my favourite nights of the OEP was Trivia Night; it was so much fun and me and my friends laughed a lot in the process.”

“Having the opportunity to bond and connect with my compass group allowed me to feel more comfortable around my peers”

“I enjoyed trying all the activities at Vision Valley because they really challenged me and many of them were out of my comfort zone. Overcoming my fears and doing these activities gave me confidence and pride to try more new things.”

“Getting to spend time connecting with new people in my class who I wouldn’t usually hang out with and trying lots of fun new activities with them.”

“Going down the waterslide, with my friends. I am really scared of going down big slides, and I’m glad I got the opportunity to face my fear, and I ended up really enjoying it and going down many more times.”

Pymble Mornings have begun in Middle School. Our Year 8 Tour Guides have done an amazing job showing our campus to prospective students and families.

All the best for a safe and happy term break. We are looking forward to welcoming the girls back for Term 2.

From the Middle School Parent Groups

Year 7

We are looking forward to our Year 7 Ladies’ Night on Friday 17 May. The evening is being held at The Greengate from 7.30pm in The Alcove.

We would like to also hold a second Ladies’ Night on Friday 2nd August at the beginning of Term 3 so everyone has the opportunity to participate.

Please note that we are also holding a dads’ function shortly.

Please also note the following dates for other events coming up:

Year 7 Mother and Daughters’ Day at Vision Valley on Sunday 16 June

This will be a lovely day for all our mothers and daughters to spend quality time together at Vision Valley undertaking a range of activities. It is the first event of its kind and promises to be very special!

PPA Trivia Night on Saturday 22 June

This is an exciting night not to be missed! One of the most popular and fun whole school events in the year, this year’s Trivia Night is being held at a new venue, event centre “Miramare Gardens” at Terrey Hills.

The theme is “Rock Pop Stars” and dress up is encouraged but optional, so we look forward to creating at least a couple of Year 7 tables for a really fun night out!

There are also wider Pymble Dads’ events happening this year which we are finding out about to ensure our Year 7 dads and carers can attend.

Wishing all our Year 7 parents a happy and safe holiday period.

Kind regards

Stephanie, Leigh and Briar

Year 8

Year 8 Dinner

Our next Year 8 event will be a “parents’ night out” for our parents and carers to meet up over dinner and drinks.

We are currently looking at either Friday 24 May or Friday 31 May (Term 2). We will include a poll within our WhatsApp group to see which date suits the majority.

In terms of a venue, local options like The Greengate Hotel or The Governor Hotel usually work well as they are cost-effective and we can individually order our dinner and drinks at the bar (not requiring prepayment for a large group). However, please let us know if you know of any other good venues.

Hope most of our parents can make it, it should be a wonderful night catching up with everyone!

Year 8 Coffee Morning

Our next coffee morning will be held on Friday 7 June.

I apologise that I have not placed the submission into a Word document as I am away from home and do not have access to my computer.

A message from Mrs Victoria Harrison, Head of Upper School

As the girls attending the second Residential Program of the year gear up for their Term 2, Week 2 start at Vision Valley, they had a great chance to meet with the Vision Valley staff this week, building excitement for the upcoming adventure. Packing lists have been shared once again, encouraging students to use the holiday break to get ready for what promises to be a fun experience.

Additionally, this weekend marks the start of our International Exchange Program for 2024, with Jojo and Phoebe heading to Wrekin College in the UK. We wish them a safe and enjoyable time abroad and look forward to hearing all about their trip when they return. As the year goes on, we will say goodbye to more Upper School students going overseas, while also eagerly awaiting the arrival of our exchange buddies here at Pymble.

Exploring new opportunities is a fundamental aspect of the Upper School journey. We take immense pride in the accomplishments of our Year 9 and 10 students this term, both inside and outside the classroom. Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate the girls’ continued expansion of their horizons in the upcoming term and all the wonderful ways they have demonstrated Pymble Pulse. Our communications leader Alice Mao has collated student perspectives on what Pymble Pulse means to them which are represented in this word cloud.

We’re thrilled to see Upper School students actively engaging in opportunities within igsa and NSW sports pathways. Special congratulations go out to Riley Atkinson and Siobhan Hsu on qualifying for National Gymnastics, and Millie Cullinane and Scarlet Olsen for their selection in the NSW 1st VIII of the NSW Interstate Pathways Team. Additionally, we commend Sosha, Millie, Ariana, and Isla for their selection in the igsa Basketball and Touch Football teams.

Pymble’s AFL Intermediate team are premiers after a resounding victory against Loreto Normanhurst and will now represent us in the AGL State Cup in October, facing off against schools from all sectors. Additionally, Badminton 4, 5, 7, 11, 20 and the 1st Water Polo team emerged as champions. Congratulations to all the girls in these outstanding teams!

The Year 10 Drama elective girls were on stage last week in their production of FANGIRLS. Thanks to Verity Haslam for this reflection.

Following ten short weeks of rehearsal, the girls from the Year 10 Drama elective sang and danced their way onto the stage with Fangirls, an original Aussie musical. This comical musical is about four teenage girls who are majorly obsessed with a boyband’s adolescent British lead who has perfect hair and a smashing smile.

Abigail McKinnon dazzled in the role of Edna, the super-serious student who managed to successfully kidnap the all-important Harry played by Monique Strong and India Wells-Lister. Verity Haslam (Jules) and Matilda Hawkins (Jess), the over-the top, deliciously wicked twins, and Brianna played by Christine Weng, delighted the audience with their engaging antics and sassy retorts.

Salty, Edna’s online confidant, was played by the delightfully talented Mahi who flipped and dipped across the stage. And, the boy band, Harry’s support crew, who consisted of Jemima Groves-Berry, Holly Hogan, Chloe Brown and Livia Armstrong sang, pranced and unleashed their versatility on the unsuspecting audience.

Ms Pedavoli’s superbly directed poptastic musical delighted the audience and engaged all the girls from the Year 10 Drama group. A thank you must also be issued to the Year 9 Drama elective girls who assisted in making this a fabulous experience for all involved.

Thank you to the Upper School Liaison Prefects; Abigail, Chloe and Charlotte. On Monday, we organised an exciting activity for Year 10 students during their Mind-Body-Spirt time. There were two Year 12 prefects that joined each Compass class for a discussion about any worries or excitements the Year 10 students might have for entering Senior School next year. Some areas we addressed included study skills, friendships, balancing co-curricular activities and subject selection.

We also looked into how the HSC works and the range of opportunities available after school, such as university or gap years. The activity was aimed to relieve any stress or worries the girls might have towards entering Year 11 and 12, and to build their relationships with the Year 12 Prefects to make sure that they have someone to go to if they have any questions in the future, further bringing the school community together.

The activity was successful with the girls actively engaging in the conversation, and on behalf of all the Year 12s involved, we enjoyed discussing with them things we may have wished we knew in Year 10. We are looking forward to continuing this activity in later terms and continuing to build relationships between the Upper School and the Year 12 Prefects.

As we draw close to the end of another term, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation for the unwavering dedication, care, and hard work of the Upper School team. The commitment displayed by Mariel Lombard, Myvanwy Carr, Felicity Gray, Stephanie Attley, Peter Fathers, and the Administration team consisting of Sally Seymour, Anthea Deschamps, and Sabine Watts is truly commendable.

It is wonderful to be part of such a caring and supportive team, who tirelessly work to provide invaluable support to Year 9 and 10. Thank you for all that you do.

We understand that both students and staff alike are eagerly anticipating the April Holidays. We encourage the girls to utilise this time to its fullest, ensuring a fun, safe, and relaxing break. We eagerly anticipate the return of the girls to school on Tuesday 30 April.

The final week of Term 1 has finished with a flourish, with many events for the students. I have been asking them to reflect upon their efforts and growth this term, encouraging them to take pride in meeting challenges and stretching themselves. The students in Year 11 have made a very successful transition to Senior School and are already establishing a wonderful climate of co-operation, diligence and maturity.

The term break will provide a welcome opportunity to rest and recharge and the Year 12 students should balance this against maintaining a routine of academic revision and preparation for Term 2. This will ensure that they begin Term 2 rested and ready to embark upon their work next term.

Assessment and reflection

Many students in Years 11 and 12 will be receiving their results from some recent assessment tasks. This is a great opportunity to discuss your daughter’s progress with her and reinforce the messages that have been given at school. Most specifically, the key point of reflecting on assessment tasks is to use these as a diagnostic tool – they help reveal your areas of strength, and areas that need further attention. They can also be of use when reviewing strategies for preparation and revision – to consider how you prepared and was that a helpful routine, or can some changes be made to ensure that you are better prepared?

Best wishes to all Senior School families for a restful and happy term break. To those who are away from home, safe travels. Thank you to parents for all your support over the past term. It is always very much appreciated.

Uniform

Please take the time to review your daughter’s uniform over the break. A number of students need to ensure that their skirt length is in line with our uniform code. Please refer to the student diary (page 25) to review details of the winter school uniform, which will be worn from the beginning of next term.

Robotics

From Friday 23 March to Tuesday 2 April a group of Year 11 students, including me, travelled to Las Vegas to compete in the 2024 FRC Las Vegas Regional to represent Pymble’s robotics team, 6510 Pymble Pride. The trip was very exciting as we were able to do many fun activities including exploring the Las Vegas strip and visiting the M&M store. We even toured an American high school – which looked a lot like the school from High School Musical!

FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) is an international robotics competition for students in Years 9 to 12. Each year a new FRC game is released and the challenge is to design, build and program a robot that can play the game in six weeks. This year the challenge was to score large foam rings into a goal and hang on a metal chain. The robots are ~56kg and the field is the size of a basketball court. The competition at Las Vegas was intense, and there were many incredible teams competing including the 2023 World Champions. It was also amazing to meet so many teams from all over, including a team from Taiwan and the Netherlands.

Our team made it to the playoffs, however we were eventually eliminated. At the end of the competition we were awarded the Autonomous Award for our reliable autonomous code, and I was awarded the Dean’s List Finalist Award, for my technical contributions to the team and commitment to promoting STEM in my community.

Overall, the trip and competition were extremely rewarding experiences, and we have made memories that will last for a lifetime. Congrats to Sophia Chang, Ashley Chow, Aria Patel, Rachel Moon, and Aysel Gupta for their amazing efforts.

Written by Ang-Ya Koo (Year 11)

The Dean’s List Awards

Congratulations too, to two members of the team who are the recipients of the presitigious Dean’s List Award – Ang-Ya Koo and Sophia Chen. This recognises the leadership and dedication of the FIRST robotics program’s most outstanding secondary school students. It is given to students who have led their team and community to increased awareness of STEM and robotics, whilst achieving personal technical expertise and accomplishment.

Lunch with the Swifts

On Thursday 4 April, a few of the Year 11 and 12 netballers were fortunate enough to attend the 2024 Swifts Season Launch out at Netball Central. This was such an amazing opportunity to meet and engage with the players.

At the launch, each player received their official dresses for the upcoming 2024 season. Bella Walker, the captain of netball, and myself had the honour of presenting Sophie Fawns and Sarah Klau with their 2024 season dresses. This was personally my favourite part of the day and certainly the most memorable. Another highlight was catching up with Grace Whyte who graduated last year and is now a training partner for the team. Overall, the day was outstanding and an incredible experience for all that attended.

Immersion Day

I had a great experience at ACU (Australian Catholic University) on Immersion day. Having the opportunity to try out different university degrees and seeing what uni life may be like was so interesting. I took part in a Sports and Exercise Science course and an Occupational Therapy course, they were both really fascinating courses and opened up new interests to me. I really enjoyed seeing different parts of the campus and the separate co-curricular activities they had available. Overall, it was a really fun day and helped me understand what I may want to do at university later on!

Written by Tully

Last Thursday, Year 11 had the privilege of going on our University Immersion Day, in which we chose between UNSW, ACU and UTS to participate in a variety of courses including health, science, art and engineering. I attended the Australian Catholic University, where we had an enjoyable and insightful day experiencing daily campus life. It was a great opportunity to learn about a university I hadn’t previously known much about, through independently travelling to the campus, learning about the courses and social life and getting to know other students in my year group with similar interests as me. I went to two workshops; nursing and occupational therapy, and I especially liked how they were led by current university students. My favourite part of the day was when we visited the practical rooms, which are used in classes and exams to mimic hospital environments. I really enjoyed Immersion day, it was a great day to learn more about the courses, career pathways and student life.

Written by Abby

Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to attend Immersion Day at UNSW. It provided me with a firsthand look into university life. We began with a campus tour were they showed us the array of  facilities that they had as well as all the different activities they run every day such as free smoothies and painting classes. We also found out that the Kensington campus is so big that it has its own postcode!

Throughout the day we participated in three different sessions that were run by UNSW professors. Each of the sessions we participated in we were able to pick before attending the day and we had a lot of different options. In these mini classes we created floating structures, played an economics computer game and got to break apart plastic structures.

Lunch was great because we got to pick from a wide variety of food options like GYG and Share Tea and (although it was raining) we were able to sit and chat with our friends about our day so far.

Overall the day was amazing because we were able to complete fun activities with our friends and also begin to think about what we want to do and where to go once we graduate. I had a great time building different objects and listening to the professors and students. I can’t wait to go to the open day later on this year.

The Year 11 immersion excursion provided a chance for us to experience the life of a university student for a day, including participating in workshops that showcased the diverse courses the university offered, buying morning tea and lunch with other students, and organising travel to and from the campus. This allowed us to involve ourselves in factors such as the day-to-day life of a student, determining if certain courses were of interest, and the dynamics of travelling across such a large campus. I felt that the excursion was quite effective in depicting these aspects of university life, and helped me to further understand what my next few years might look like, and an overall enjoyable experience.

Food for Thought

Last Thursday, the Year 12s enjoyed a special lunch with some of our lovely 2023 graduates, who very kindly volunteered their time. These recent graduates shared their HSC journey with the current Year 12s, providing advice and support. It was a great afternoon to catch up with them all and hear where they are heading in this next stage after school.

Our keynote speaker was Annika Mounstephens (ESU, 2018). She shared an inspiring story of taking opportunities as they present themselves, and the importance of learning and building your ‘toolkit’ along the way. Recently graduated from UNSW with a degree in Economics and Neuroscience, she is now working in a consulting position in the field of technology. She enjoyed a year living in Canada before using her entrepreneurial talent, starting her own business during her years of study.

Annika framed her speech around five (or six) key ideas, which really resonated with the girls and recent graduates:

#1 Be kind to yourself in the face of big changes. “This is ok, this is a work in progress.”

#2 Look after your mates.. and let them look after you.

#3 Reframe what uncertainty means to you.. its not all grim shudders!

#4 Don’t tell me you “can’t”… you always have choices.

#5 Invest in skills – Now is the time to fill up your toolbox.

Bonus/#6 … CHILL!

Sincerest thanks to Annika, our recent graduates and the staff who worked so hard to bring this wonderful event to our students.

From the Boarding School

On Tuesday night, we celebrated all things Boarding in our End of Term Chapel Service and Dinner. I was delighted to share the success of the term, including the move to a vertical system of house allocation. I remain grateful to all the incredible people that make Pymble Boarding so special, not the least your beautiful daughters!

Did you hear about it?

Each fortnight in Chapel we celebrate our Boarders’ many achievements. Our Boarders are busy girls and as you will read below, they are also incredibly talented! Congratulations to the following Boarders who are excelling in their area of interest:

Hannah Carmichael and Lily Barlow of Year 11 who are currently representing Pymble at the 2024 Swimming National Age Championships in multiple events. The competition is held in the Gold Coast this coming week and we wish them all the very best in their events.

Year 10 Boarder, Jocelyn Blair who will be competing in the Junior Athletics Championships in Adelaide over the holiday break. She will be competing in the 100m sprint and the 100m hurdles. Goodluck Jos!

Sophie Laing of Year 11 who was selected for Team 1 of the Sydney Netball Academy. She’ll be competing in the Academy Games in Wagga.

Phoebe Roberts and her team, who played in the Senior 1sts Water polo against Brigidine College and won 8-6. Phoebe also heads off on exchange at the end of this term. She will spend 6 weeks at Wrekin College in Shropshire, UK. We know everyone at Wrekin will love her as much as we do, and we wish her all the best on her adventures!

Following on from her incredible efforts throughout the Sydney Royal Easter Show, Year 11 Boarder, Hannah Weber will be representing Pymble Cadets at the Adventure Training Awards held in Lake Barrington, Tasmania, from the 9th-13th April. Last weekend, Hannah was also awarded 2024 Hawkesbury Youth Rural Ambassador award.

FANGIRLS was the fabulous Year 10 Drama Production and we couldn’t have been prouder of the wonderful Livia Armstrong who starred in the production. It was wonderful to see our Boarders out in full force to support Liv.

Over the long weekend, Mads Gaden (Year 8) showcased her amazing equestrian talents at the Easter Show. Mads rode ponies for others whilst also riding her own pony Rooster and collecting multiple medals along the way. Mads will also compete at a State Interschool competition at Horsley Park in the first week of the school holidays. Wishing Mads the best of luck.

Despite the heavy rain on Friday, Rachael Lee (Year 11) was able to compete in her Badminton Final on Saturday. Rachael and her team won their final against Ravenswood. Congratulations!

igsa Basketball

Last week, Sosha Hellman (Year 9) attended the IGSA representative trials for basketball at Abbotsleigh. Despite a huge day of trials, all Pymble girls trialling were selected for the IGSA team! Congratulations Sosha.

Lethy and Ally Levy Year 11 Goodlet Boarders competed at further trials for Football NSW Country squad for Nationals in July. They have both progressed to the final selection round in mid-April.

Ally has been named as part of the 16s GWS squad for nationals in April and has been selected to play the last two game days against the Swans this term.

Lethy continues to excel at the Football NSW Institute winning accolades not only for her playing but also for her outstanding and unfaltering sportsmanship on and off the field.

And, hot off the press, Lang House boarder, Ashleigh Henderson has been accepted into Brent Street (Full Time) Contemporary Dance – a 2-year graduate course. This is an incredible achievement for an incredible dancer who also happens to be an incredible Boarder!

Hawkesbury Rural Ambassador

Hannah Weber is a busy young woman and her talents are many and diverse. Most recently, Hannah was awarded the title of Rural Youth Ambassador for the Hawkesbury region. As part of her role, Hannah will be involved in forums focused on rural and remote life and learning, utilising a solution focused approach to address the challenges they identify. She will present to senior education staff, meet with the Minister for Education, philanthropic organisations and key stakeholder groups, in addition to presenting at education workshops, forums and conferences. I look forward to sharing Hannah’s success in this role in the months to come.

The Pink Lady award

For those who don’t already know, at the end of each term the Boarding community awards a staff member and family within the day school in thanks of their ongoing kindness and support to the boarding community. Pink Ladies are special people in the lives of our Boarders who go out of their way to make our time in Boarding easier, happier and more connected.

It was an easy choice for our Term 1 staff Pink Ladies – Mr Greg Hastie and Ms Vanessa Yu who are the incredible team who brought our dream of a Year 7 Boarding House to life, and in record time! Mr Hastie had a very clear vision of the new Year 7s carrying their suitcases through the doors to Avonmoore early in Term 1 and somehow managed, against all odds, to pull it off! It was a great lesson for us all in the power of determination, fortitude and deep care. Ms Yu was also there every step of the way, negotiating with designers and regulatory authorities to ensure Avonmoore is a beautiful, welcoming and highly functioning home. Thank you from all of us and especially our Year 7 Boarders, some of whom are here to welcome you to the Pink Lady club.

Not only are the fabulous staff at the College a significant support to our Boarders, but of course, there are so many wonderful families in our day school who so kindly help our Boarders with a place to stay, transport to and from sport, and if your lucky maybe some special treats. This term we would like to thank a family who has been a large support for Boarders, opening the doors of their home for boarders to stay in holidays for extra commitments, weekends, and the lifts to and from sport. This family has been extra welcoming for new Boarders helping them out both in the day school and out of school. This term we would like to thank the Mclean family, Harriet in Year 12 and Lucy in Year 10 for their support and kindness towards our  boarding family your efforts do not go unnoticed.

The Brooksie

The Margaret Brooke Award, also known as ‘The Brooksie’ is awarded to a Boarder who exemplifies the spirit of a tenacious, courageous, compassionate and giving woman.

Congratulations to Year 12 Boarder, Brielle Mann who epitomises the essence of the Brooksie Award being tenacious, courageous, compassionate, and giving. Her remarkable spirit transcends barriers that are just waiting to be conquered.

Her tenacity shines through in her determination to make the most of any situation, refusing to let any challenge deter her from pursuing her goals. Her courage is evident – she persists with resilience and grit.

Brielle is a true friend, always ready to step in and help anyone who needs it. She is respected for her compassion as she extends empathy and support to those around her. Brielle loves to ensure a peaceful environment in the house, does not speak ill of others, is kind and understanding.

Chatting with staff and her Boarding sisters gives her pleasure and she is an enthusiastic, and funny, storyteller. Her sense of humour just adds to her individuality and charm. She also takes pride in having an immaculate uniform.

Brielle’s creative side gives her great joy, whether it be in her dedication to her training in rhythmic gymnastics, or immersing herself in her Textiles HSC Major Work.

Don’t forget to sign up for a fabulous weekend away with our Boarding families

Following last year’s amazing parent weekend in Mudgee, the McLaughlin family has organised another action-packed weekend away, this time in the Hawkesbury.

After checking into Crowne Plaza Hawkesbury Valley, only a 50-minute drive from Pymble, we will catch a coach to the McLaughlin’s Hillbilly Cider for a late lunch. After returning to the Crowne Plaza, and enjoying the facilities, dinner and drinks will be served at the hotel.

On Sunday morning we will check out of Crowne and make our way to the Windsor Polo Club where we will enjoy a picnic lunch to conclude what’s set to be another wonderful weekend getaway.

We would love to have as many parents join in the fun. Please click on flyer below to book your activities, and click here to book your accommodation for the weekend.

It’s not too late to sign up to ‘Eat like a Boarder’

Please accept the invitation to join us for a meal on Tuesday 29 April at 6.00pm, when you return your girls from the term break. This will be the ‘real’ experience, with you being able to enjoy the regular dinner service, just as the girls do each evening. Rest as Resistance

Hebrews 11: 9-11

9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,  just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest….

Do you ever get agitated or even feel guilty when you have free space in your day? When there is nothing left on your to-do list?

It’s very hard to get space in our day, isn’t it? There is very little margin in our schedules to be present and enjoy the now moment – why? Because we want to be all that we can be, we want to be our best selves and others around us want us to produce. Even when we do get small margins of time… we feel guilty because we aren’t producing anything.

One of highlights of my week is to bring my kids to Boarders’ dinner on Thursday evening. We go – not because of a roster or obligation – but simply to hang out. There are a million other things I could be doing and need to do. But we simply love doing… not much… on a Thursday night with the Boarders. After the meal the footy is often kicked around.  Though the girls are competitive, the point of the game is not to win, but simply enjoy the “space” in their day, to be a teenager and enjoy life. To be alive.

The practice of rest, some cultures call this ‘Sabbath’, is about intentionally including space in your day or week to enjoy and celebrate being alive. Author Water Bruggemman discusses the counter-cultural nature of prioritising rest. “Practicing rest is an act of both resistance and alternative. It is resistance because it is a visible insistence that our lives are not defined by the production and consumption of commodity goods. The core of our life is not what I do, but who I am.”

We are built from the inside out.

This week I encouraged our students to enjoy their two weeks off school. To be mindful of replacing their busy school schedule with other forms of busyness.  I’m not suggesting they should book a holiday to Bali or a health retreat- as great as those options are, or throw out study.  Sabbath can take place anywhere but will require you to say “no” to the seduction of busyness. Allow yourself margin, slow the pace down, give space to listen to what’s going on in your heart, in your body- that might look like letting the first thing you look at in the morning be the sunrise out the window, rather than your mobile phone- being present to the day- maybe take a walk, sit with a friend in the park, lay down and listen to music, something that makes you feel fully human, fully alive.

Join me in praying for our community:

Holy God – in this precious time, we pause to draw our awareness to your presence.

We thank you for the term that has been, for sustaining us and nurturing our growth.

As we approach our holidays,

Help us to break from our busyness, to resist the

ever present burden to produce and “do”.

Give us courage to say “no” to distractions from our rest

that we may focus to listen,

that we may hear, that we may change.

For we insist that our lives are more than production and consumption. \Help us understand what it means to be alive.

Help us to see the sacred in the everday, and embrace the beauty of stillness, silence, of margins in our day and the renewal that rest grants us.

In Jesus name.

Blessings and peace.

Performance Nutrition and Positive Body Image for Female Athletes

We are delighted to extend an invitation to Pymble student-athletes for a keynote on Performance Nutrition and Positive Body Image for Female Athletes , presented by Melissa Juergens.

This keynote session is scheduled for Tuesday 21 May from 3.45pm until 5.15pm, and will be held in the Jobson Lecture Theatre in the Kate Mason Building.

Melissa Juergens, an accredited and practicing dietitian, as well as an accredited sports dietitian, will cover several pivotal topics, including:

  • Fuelling for Performance: Emphasising the importance of a balanced and adequate nutritional approach to meet the demands of performance.
  • Debunking Myths: Addressing common misconceptions surrounding the “ideal” female athlete body and the risks associated with under-fuelling.
  • Practical Nutrition Guidance: Offering practical advice on nutrition before and after training/competitions to support heavy training loads and optimal recovery.
  • Uniqueness of Nutritional Needs: Reiterating the crucial understanding that athletes should not compare their diets to their peers, as their nutritional requirements are distinct and specifically tailored to their individual sporting needs.

Our goal for this session is to nurture an informative space where both student-athletes and their parents can acquire a deeper comprehension of these subjects, fostering healthy habits and a positive body image among our Pymble athletes. At the conclusion of the presentation, there will be an opportunity for attendees to engage in a Q&A segment.

Melissa Juergens has a commendable background, contributing her expertise as the Head Sports Dietitian for the GWS Giants AFL,  Giants Netball, Waratahs Men and Waratahs Women team. With a mission to demystify diet and nutrition, Melissa is dedicated to helping individuals view food beyond mere calories. Her approach encourages a balanced diet that doesn’t impose unnecessary restrictions but instead supports individuals in becoming the healthiest, happiest versions of themselves, enabling them to thrive in our dynamic world.

We encourage all Pymble student-athletes and their parents to attend this invaluable presentation. The keynote is open to any student-athlete in Years 7 to 12 and their parent/carer who represent Pymble in a sporting team.

If you would like to attend the keynote, please click here to RSVP. Students and parents are also encouraged to complete the following AIS education modules from the Female Performance and Health Initiative prior to the keynote presentation.

1. Body Image in Female Athletes

2. Low Energy Availability

3. Nutrition for Female Athletes

AFL

AFL

Our AFL grand finals were impacted by the rain over the weekend. Unfortunately, our Pymble 5 team were unable to play their match against PLC Sydney due to ground closures. Our mighty Pymble 6 team’s Lightning Carnival was also cancelled.

The shining light for the weekend was our Pymble 3 team who managed to get on the all-weather surface at Narrabean Sports High. Taking on a determined Loreto, our players were dominant from the start, kicking five goals in the first quarter. They continued this dominance throughout the match, despite a late fight back from the opposition. The full-time score ended at 55 to 2 resulting in a premiership victory for our team. A huge shout out to Madison Gabila (Year 8) who kicked seven goals and was subsequently awarded player of the match.

Pymble 3 will now progress to the Junior Schools Cup State Final. As this is a year-long pathway competition involving public, Catholic and independent schools, the state final will take place in Term 4 (Tuesday 29 October) at Central Coast Regional Sporting and Recreation Complex, Tuggerah.

An amazing achievement, well done!

Captain’s Report – Angelina Lee (Year 12)

2024 has been yet another brilliant season for Badminton, filled with enthusiasm, teamwork, and perseverance. In term 1, we have witnessed an unprecedented surge in participation, with a total 35 Pymble teams who all demonstrated consistent dedication and excellent sportsmanship in the IGSA Badminton Competition. Our players always eagerly anticipate the Saturday matches which lay out a friendly atmosphere for teams of three to five badminton players to apply the skills practiced during training. These games also offer the opportunity to mingle with players from other schools, extending their friendships beyond Pymble

After countless early morning training sessions, I am delighted to announce that we have seen outstanding results with 22 teams making it to grand finals. I would like to commend Pymble 03, Pymble 09, Pymble 23, Pymble 24, and Pymble 25 for securing Bronze. Further acknowledgement for Pymble 06, Pymble 13,and Pymble 20 for achieving Silver. A big congratulations to Pymble 04, Pymble 05, Pymble 07, Pymble 11, Pymble 21, Pymble 32, and Pymble 34 for such a wonderful achievement.

None of these wonderful results would have been possible without the constant guidance and leadership of Miss Davis and the amazing team of Badminton coaches. On behalf of the players, we would like to express our gratitude for their dedication in coaching us. Their guidance and leadership extend beyond the Badminton courts to supporting the students as they explore this sport through their school life. Thank you for creating such a close-knit community of Badminton of mutual support and encouragement and for making this program run as smoothly as it did.

NSW Interschool Competition

Following the growing interest in Badminton, Miss Davis and the hardworking team of coaches has organised a NSW Interschool Competition for players to further refine their skills and to nurture the flourishing enthusiasm.

I highly encourage all students to continue their endeavour in Badminton into next year for another exceptional season. Thank you to all athletes for your unwavering commitment and enthusiastic approach to badminton and best of luck for next year!

Kindergarten to Year 12 Sharing Stories Festival – Tania Blanchard workshop

As part of the Sharing Stories Festival, best selling author Tania Blanchard gave a fascinating talk on the writing of historical fiction for Year 12 History Extension students and College staff. She explained the process behind the creation of her historical fiction novels. All of her works are inspired by her own family history. Tania explained that family photographs often spark ideas, and she starts looking for relevant primary sources in the form of birth and death certificates, family letters, newspaper articles and oral accounts. She then embarks on secondary research to fill in details.

Students asked inspired questions that stimulated some wonderful historical debate. Topics ranged from the validity of historical fiction as a form of investigating the past, to the balance between historical accuracy and the need to engage and entertain readers. The delicate question of unearthing family secrets was also broached.

This was a valuable experience centred around one of the core foci of the Extension course: evaluating different approaches to history and the complexity of factors that shape historical interpretations.

Tania’s books include The Girl From Munich, Suitcase of Dreams, Letters From Berlin, Daughter of Calabria and A Woman of Courage.

2024 RAS Royal Easter Show

This was the 10th year Pymble Ladies’ College have participated in the Royal Easter Show. Our Pymble Cattle team members engaged with the public by answering questions about the College and the cattle program. Most of the public cannot believe cattle are kept on the College campus, particularly when told they back onto the Avondale Golf course!

The show team presented three purebred steers; two Angus Steers bred by “Knowla” Livestock – Ted and Alison Laurie, one Murray Grey steer bred by “Glandmire Stud” – Dan and Anika Collins and one Angus x Simmental Trade steer bred by “Kunderang Stud” – Richard Fitzgerald. The team placed Fourth with one of the “Knowla Livestock” steers, paraded by Lucy Pennington (Year 12).

A highlight for the College was Annabelle Jones (Year 10) placing First in the school parader’s competition category, progressing to Reserve Champion School Parader prize. Annabelle was outstanding in her first round, immediately catching the eye of the judge for her ability to control a very playful, if not cantankerous, animal!  To see Annabelle drop the show cane and take immediate control of the 400+kg steer was a sight to behold and displays skills beyond her years! Annabelle is the first Pymble Cattle Team member to achieve this prestigious award – congratulations!

In the Open State Finals, two students qualified at the Castle Hill Show, Lucy Pennington (Year 12) and Eilidh Skelton (Year 10).  Lucy placed 3rd in Open State Parading Finals and Eilidh tried her Pymble best and was unlucky to miss out on a ribbon.

All Cattle team members are commended on their performance at the show.  Students exhibited Pymble pride in themselves and the College, proudly displaying their cattle whilst flying the Pymble flag.

Carcass Results

Our “Knowla” (Middleweight) steer bred by the Laurie Family weighing in at 478kg and bought by China Doll Restaurant achieved 1st in the virtual taste test with a point score of 85.5 and achieving the Reserve Champion ribbon!

The smaller Knowla steer (395kg) achieved a Bronze Award in the virtual taste test. This animal was purchased by McFarlands Gourmet Meats – Wahroonga.  Anyone wishing to buy some excellent beef cuts are encouraged to see the team at McFarlands and ask the Pymble Ladies’ College beef carcass.

Our Murray Grey steer bred by the Collins Family achieved a score of 80.20 points on the hook.

Our final Trade Steer entry bred by the Fitzgerald family achieved a score of 88.9 and achieved 9th position out of 41 animals – an excellent achievement!

I would like to praise the Pymble Cattle team for their excellent presentation of animals at this year’s Royal Easter Show. We received many compliments regarding our Pymble student’s behaviour and professionalism toward preparing and presenting the animals in this prestigious competition.
