From the Principal

Happy Diwali to our families and friends of Pymble who will be celebrating The Festival of Lights on Sunday. Each year, the festival takes place on the darkest night of the Hindu lunar calendar and celebrants create light displays in their homes and the community to symbolise the triumph of good over evil, and wisdom over ignorance. It was such a joy to see students and staff from a wide range of backgrounds came together in our Junior School at lunchtime today to share stories, learn some of the language, and enjoy the dancing, food, music, diyas, rangoli and mehendi associated with Diwali celebrations. Thank you to our Intercultural Connections student leadership committee and helpers from Year 3 to our Senior School who brought this colourful event to life.

We are proud of all our students, staff and families who chose to ‘have a go’ and learn about a new culture this year, whether that was through our Diwali celebration today or other cultural events. Celebrating the traditions and stories that shape us as a community is an important component of our Social Intelligence pillar. At the core of this pillar lies the strong commitment to ensuring our College continues to be a welcoming and safe place where people of all cultures and beliefs know they are free to be their true selves, and where our connections strengthen and deepen from listening to and learning about things of importance to each person in our extended Pymble family.

‘Have a go’ is the resounding theme for tomorrow when Years 6 to 11 (along with our incoming Year 7s for 2024) will attend our third annual Have a Go Expo. Designed to showcase the College’s extensive range of Co-curricular programs, the expo allows students to explore the many and varied different activities on offer at Pymble and, where feasible, ‘have a go’ to see whether they may like to consider signing up for next year.

The beauty of this event is that it is based on students talking to students about the joys and benefits of each program. Girls are encouraged to explore and ask questions in a welcoming and inclusive environment, and our enthusiast Co-curricular leaders relish the opportunity to showcase their knowledge and passion for the programs at Pymble that make their hearts sing. After last year’s event, our Snowsports Team was delighted to record a big intake for this year – which goes to show the power of the passion of our student ambassadors!

I am often asked to define what makes Pymble so special, and it’s near impossible to pinpoint just one thing. In the context of this week, when our students are leading and participating in everything from Diwali celebrations and the Have a Go Expo to our highly-anticipated end-of-year showcase for K-12 dancers called Future. It Could Be…, I would have to say that Pymble fosters an environment where each student is seen and valued for who they truly are, and for what they bring to our Pymble family. They have every opportunity to take a seat at whatever table they choose, supported by teachers and staff who value each student’s wellbeing and sense of belonging at school as highly as they value their learning outcomes.

Research from around the world provides strong evidence that girls-only education leads to higher academic achievement, higher self-esteem and confidence levels, greater participation in STEM subjects, and enhanced career aspirations. In an all-girls’ school, teaching is tailored to girls’ learning needs and preferences, and activities and academic opportunities are free of gender-stereotyping. In fact, a recent study points to girls in all girls’ learning environments being “more likely than co-educated girls to report experiencing learning environments in which they are able to fulfill their learning goals due to substantially lower amounts of disruption or distraction”. However, the following opinion piece in the SMH about why the author sent her two daughters to an all-girls’ school sums it up best.

“I want my daughters to be loud, to take up space, to claim their place in the world. I want them to be bold, to feel comfortable putting themselves out there and taking risks.”

“…when we talk about promoting gender equality, we’re often told we can’t be what we can’t see. At girls’ schools, kids see every opportunity being given to a girl; every leadership position going to a girl.”

“For me, it’s about my daughters being educated in a space where they are seen and valued, where they’re not striving to fit in with the boys – rather, they are celebrated as girls.”

Say hello to our HOLAs

Developing awareness of the ethical dimension of history, society and the world around us is an important part of our work as educators of compassionate and influential global citizens. This week, we resume our series of Head of Learning Area profiles by getting to know Ms Caragh Warth, our HOLA – History, Society and Ethics. Ms Warth leads the team that delivers the following courses to Years 7 to 10: Religion and Ethics, History, Elective History, Big History, Modern History, Ancient History and History Extension, Philosophy, Aboriginal Studies, Society and Culture, Legal Studies, and Studies of Religion. A permanent member of our academic staff since 2015, she currently teaches History, Modern History and History Extension.

Caragh, what was the ‘aha’ moment that led you into teaching?

“It was more of a gradual process than an ‘aha’ moment for me. I loved my subjects that I completed at University in my Bachelor of Arts – History and Italian. I loved the continuous nature of learning History and Italian which led me into teaching.”

What is the most rewarding aspect of the work you do here?

“A definite highlight is the relationship you develop with the students. I find it deeply rewarding in helping them to explore the world and understand the layers of meaning in history. I love inspiring a deep love of learning and allowing them to think about issues and problems facing our world and how it developed from history. The other aspect I find most rewarding is supporting a highly professional and dedicated group of teachers, who are all passionate about their subjects and supporting the students they teach.”

What are you most proud of achieving as a Pymble HOLA?

“I am proud of achieving a dynamic and supportive environment for my colleagues in our faculty.”

Work aside, tell us a fun fact about you…

“There are many fun facts – but I always have a song running through my head and I love to sing.”

Finish this sentence: If I could impart one life lesson to our students, it would be…

Be open to ideas and people.”

Congratulations to all our students who are taking up space, taking risks and taking their place in the world, whether that’s on stage tonight in the second Dance Showcase for the week or at any table or playing field of their choice. We are #PymbleProud of you, one and all.

Our Social Intelligence Pillar in action in our Junior School

Our Junior School Teacher Research Conversations Club met on Thursday 2 November with Dr Debra Dank – the inaugural Research Fellow of the Pymble Institute. During the lunch session the group discussed commonalities and differences in educating young children in mainstream and indigenous communities.

Our passionate and dedicated Pymble teachers were excited to learn from Debra, especially in her capacity as founder of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The Junior School has been building capacity among staff in better understanding indigenous books, culture and history. Teachers have participated in the Goodooga indigenous games and Miss McGeoch and Miss Buchner are off at the end of this week to Millingimbi as a service trip and to support a return visit of students to the College later this year.

Dr Debra Dank is a class teacher (primary and secondary), special education teacher, lecturer and author of award winning book, We Come With This Place. Debra is Gudanji/Wakaja, and comes from the Barkly Tablelands in the Northern Territory.

Celebrating Diwali

This week we celebrate Diwali in our Junior School on Thursday 9 November. During the day, girls will be invited to create Rangoli, watch traditional Indian dances and learn more about the culture with some of our Secondary students coming to our Hall at lunchtime to share their knowledge and stories too.

Good luck to our Dancers

I know our dancers have been working hard over the year, and particularly over the last few weekends in preparation for their dance showcases this week. I am excited to be watching all these showcases this week to support our girls.

Congratulations to our Robotics teams at State Championships

I want to start by saying how #PymbleProud I was to hear how many of our parents volunteered to help at the Robotics competition held at Knox on Sunday. Thank you all for showing our Pymble spirit in this way and the way you support our girls as they compete and the teachers who mentor and support the teams.

Congratulations to all our girls who competed with confidence, determination, courage and team spirit throughout the day. Mr Brown and Mrs Tedesco were both so proud at the end of the day with the way our teams challenged themselves, competed and supported one another.

Congratulations to Lydia Chen, Emma Fu, Emma Popli, Charlotte Wu, Michelle Xing who progress to Nationals later this year.

Year 4 Creative Writing Club

Hedgehog House was abuzz with authors on Tuesday, as a small group of Year 4 girls celebrated their works in a showcase for parents. The Year 4 creative writing club girls, have been working with Mrs Brown across the year to develop their own historical fiction linked to real world historical events and inspired by their reading of the novel The Dangerous Business of Being Trilby Moffat by Kate Temple.

The girls researched their historical context and then wrote their own novel, designed their book cover using AI and presented artefacts representative of that time period. Reading their work, the girls incorporated such wonderful imagery and figurative language that transported the reader back in time, travelling the journey with the characters within. Congratulations girls on a wonderful showcase and thank you Mrs Brown, for your knowledge and absolute passion for literature, and for supporting the girls in their journey as writers.

Sokratis Jr

Congratulations to all students who participated in the Sokratis Jr Research Project for 2023. Across the year the girls have researched a topic based on the theme ‘What matters to me‘. Projects focused on a wide range of areas including the history of medicine, gender inequality in sport, Artificial Intelligence (AI), fashion, animal welfare, architecture, cultural dance, wellbeing and literature.

The girls not only developed research skills but also developed their skills in time management, communication, problem solving, critical and creative thinking and collaboration. Thank you to our wonderful parent community for supporting the girls on their journey. We are very Pymble proud of our girls.

Wild with Words AND Mrs Brown Poetry Competition

Students in Years 1-6 across Ku-ring-gai are invited to submit a poem about a favourite animal, plant, tree or special place in nature, sharing their love and respect for our environment. Girls are to submit a hardcopy of their poem which includes a hand drawn picture. Entries close on 14 November.

For more details, please click here.

Mrs Brown loves poetry and nature and as such, she is inviting girls to submit a hardcopy of their poem to her too and she will select winners from different grades to then be displayed at our Let’s Get Creative Festival. Winners will each be awarded 10 House Points.

Yesterday we were really excited that Mrs Jenny Roberts, Pymble’s Chief Operating Officer, came to the Junior School Sustainability Club meeting to speak with us again. We shared with her the details of our rubbish audit and the changes we wanted to see in the Junior School to prevent food waste, limit rubbish and make our school a more sustainable place. We were excited to learn that we will be getting more bins and bins for specific items such as paper, bottles and cans and that Mrs Roberts will talk to the kitchen about some of other suggestions.

This week, Year 7 joined their big sisters in Year 8 on campus after their adventures at Vision Valley. Once again, we would like to congratulate Year 7 on their enthusiasm whilst away. We would also like to thank Heads of Year, Mr Andrew Heggie and Ms Theresa Mimmo and their dedicated team of Compass Teachers who participated fully and supported Year 7 whilst away.

Below is a beautiful piece by Ella Zhang who is reflecting on her week at Vision Valley and conquering her fear as well as building reliance whilst participating in the ‘leap of faith’.

During the one-week journey, Year 7 participated in the following activities: bushwalking, abseiling, archery, orienteering, swimming, canoeing, rock climbing, high ropes, nature connections, raft building, mountain biking as well as a seven-kilometre hike to the Crosslands Reserve where they cooked group meals and spent the night in tents. The students thoroughly enjoyed this experience, in particular, the high ropes course.

In the high ropes course, there is an activity called Leap of Faith. In this activity, students climb up a 10m pole, and once the student gets to the top, they take a leap of faith and jump off (with a harness attached of course). This activity is done in compass groups, and everyone takes a turn and attempts the Leap of Faith. Throughout the course of this activity, every single student has battled the fear of heights to her own level, with the rest of her compass group cheering down below. Despite the initial fear, the feeling of being lowered to the ground and the achievement is all the worthwhile.

When everyone got on to the bus home, all their faces were filled with bright smiles. Everyone had lost quite a bit of energy, but they had all gained lifetime skills and memories as well as new built courage and trust to take home with them. It has been an incredible experience, but it would not have been the same had it not been for the hard work of the Middle School Staff, compass teachers and Vision Valley staff. Thank you to Pymble for organising such a wonderful program and thanks to all the teachers and staff who have dedicated their time to make this a memorable journey. – Ella Zhang, Year 7

Whilst away, Compass Teachers nominated students they believed showed resilience, teamwork and upheld the College Values throughout the week. It was an incredibly difficult decision with so many students showing courage, respect, integrity, care and responsibility. On Tuesday, we celebrated these students in Year 7 assembly. Congratulations to the following students:

Links Day

On Friday November 10, the Middle School is hosting Links Day for the incoming 2024 Year 7 class. I would like to acknowledge the student leadership team and Transition Leaders who have been working hard to make this day a success. Students have been organising a scavenger hunt, lunch time activities and decorations for our Middle School space to make Year 6 feel welcome.

Year 8 Five Ways to Wellbeing

On Tuesday in Mind Body Spirit this week Year 8 enjoyed some much needed play time on Main Oval. They were exercising some of their 5 Ways to Wellbeing such as connecting with others, learning a new skill and being active. It was a great opportunity to engage in fun and play, reconnecting with something that was special and much loved when they were in Year 7.

A message from Mr Tom Riley, Head of Upper School

It has been lovely to have some noise and energy back in the Upper School this week as our girls returned from their examination block. We also welcomed a few new students and excitedly had our Year 8 into 9 and Year 10 into 11 Transition Day. Both year groups were treated to a barbecue lunch with the rain just about holding off.

Year 10 enjoyed some activities outside post their lunchtime gelato, whilst our current Year 9s led circle group activities with the incoming Year 9s to discuss the Residential Program in its entirety. Both year groups then had extended talks as they met members of the Upper and Senior School staff. Our incoming Year 9s and new students also had a look at the plans and anticipated finishes for our new Upper School, which is excitingly only a month or two away from starting!

Elsewhere our Upper School Leaders led a Christmas themed assembly in the Chapel this week as the culmination of their year in those positions. Whilst there were a few technical issues, it did not dampen spirits with Christmas themed trivia and ‘just dance’ a particular hit.

Pymble Ladies’ College is excited to announce that we will be hosting a presentation/workshop “Winning’s a Lousy Teacher” by Dan Haesler on Thursday 23 November from 5.00pm to 6.00pm in the Kate Mason Lecture Theatre, with an opportunity for Q&A after the workshop. Athletes and parents will explore how mindset impacts their approach to sports and life, and will learn strategies to nurture their mental game, handle setbacks, and enhance performance.

Dan Haesler is a performance coach with a wide range of clients, including elite athletes and corporate leaders. The workshop is open to students in Year 7 to 12 and their parents who represent Pymble in a sports team. There is limited space, so please be sure to RSVP by Friday 17 November.

Please click here to RSVP.

Mrs Gray, Mrs Harrison, Mrs Seymour and I enjoyed judging the Year 10 Food Technology cake decorating classes this week. The competition was fierce with so many amazing creations to choose from.

Farewell HSC 2023!

The final HSC examination, Food Technology, was completed last Friday morning. The KM rang with the delighted cheers of the students who finally finished their schedule of exams, as they rushed out into the sunshine and celebrated! As stated previously, on behalf of all the Senior School community, best wishes for every success and happiness to our 2023 graduates!

Outstanding Effort Recognition

Congratulations to our second group of Year 12 students who were recognised for their outstanding effort in Year 11. These students received all Consistent Effort across all subjects in their Learning Profiles, in both Semesters 1 and 2. This is a significant achievement, and it was a pleasure to recognise and honour their work ethic in Senior School Assembly this week. Congratulations to all!

Transition to Senior School

Last week we hosted the current Year 10 students to welcome them to the Senior School. Following a barbecue and gelato lunch, the students heard presentations from the Head of Senior School, the Curriculum Department, the Senior School counsellors and the Futures Team. They then engaged in a panel discussion with current Year 12 students, who gave them tips for a successful start to Year 11 and answered questions from the floor. It was a lovely afternoon and a great opportunity to meet many of the incoming Year 11s (2024). My special thanks to our Year 12 students who assisted – Sameera, Yvette, Harriet, Arabella, Bella and Julie.

Tanzania Tour

This week the students who visited Tanzania had a presentation night, where they shared their experiences and the new perspectives they had gained. We are so very proud of how these students acted as fine ambassadors for Pymble and provided so much assistance and care. Sincerest thanks to the teachers who also accompanied the girls – Mrs Hunt, Ms Cole and Mr Fogale. I am confident in saying that this was a life changing experience for many of the participants.

Here are Tanvi’s reflections:

I think I can speak for everyone when I say this was one of the most incredible trips to have the privilege of going on. Immersing ourselves in the culture of Tanzania, meeting wonderfully interesting people and hearing their stories truly gave me a whole new perspective.

Beginning at East Meru Community School, our first day consisted of transporting construction materials alongside some of the parents. We spoke completely different languages but regardless laughed together and managed to formed a unique connection. It really made me think about the power of body language, human connection and most importantly big smiles.

It was refreshing to see the kids so happy and so grateful, with the limited resources they had. They were so excited to respond to the letters from the Year 5 Pymble students, which really was a testament to how connections were made despite being continents apart. On the last day, when we played games and did face painting for them, the pure joy was infectious.

I remember Mary telling me that for many of these kids, the Snake Park was their first time seeing a proper road, which really made me reflect on the access to basic infrastructure that we may take for granted in our everyday lives. We tried different foods, such as spinach and makande, which is a maize based meal.

Visiting Maternity Africa was a hugely important and inspiring part of our journey. Many of the patients delivering babies were not too far from our age, and the prevalence of fistulas really highlighted the reality of limited healthcare there. As confronting as this was, it also made many of us think on how we can help beyond visiting for one day and making care packs. It inspired me to want to come back in the future and help in any way I can.

Immersing ourselves in the Maasai culture was a fascinating experience. From the School of St Jude’s we brought along a goat with us in our mini-bus to donate to the tribe, and spent the day dressing up, dancing and learning about their culture.

This trip truly gave me a whole new perspective on the world around us and the privileges we have in our everyday life that we may take for granted. I have made it a personal goal of mine, as I’m sure others have too, to go back to this incredible place.

Sportwomen’s Awards Night

Last week I had the privilege of attending the Sportwomen’s Awards Night at Miramare Gardens. Congratulations to those girls who received awards and to all students who have committed themselves to training and competing in a Pymble sport this year. Your participation and enthusiasm, and great skill, is so much appreciated, and creates that magical Pymble spirit!

Out of Hours Support for Year 12 Uni Applications

Many students have already finalised applications for tertiary applications, including organising references and academic transcripts for Australian and overseas institutions. The College has communicated the importance of observing internal deadlines and being organised prior to graduation. If students require support or advice, please contact the Futures Department before we will be on leave. Our office will be closed from COB 15th December 2023 until late January when Term 1 resumes. Should students require careers advice or assistance, they can access the recommended services outlined in this guide.

Please discuss 2024 plans with your daughter and check for any requirements and submission dates for the respective institutions which interest her.

Please also note that Pymble staff will also be on annual leave from 16 December until school resumes in late January 2024. As a result, it will not be possible to organise references or other supporting documents after 15 December.

From the Secondary School Parent Group

Susan and I (Pilar) would like to warmly invite all Year 12 2024 parents and carers to the end-of-year celebration.

Balmoral Adventure

Last Friday our fabulous Year 8 Boarders headed out to Balmoral Beach for a sunset picnic. Although the water temperatures were crisp, many were brave and enjoyed a paddle around the famous wharf. As the sun started to set, the girls enjoyed kicking a footy and a bite to eat on the shores before travelling back to Boarding (we hear there was plenty on singing on the journey home!)

Bowling Adventure

Saturday night was full of excitement for our Marden ladies as they headed on a bowling adventure to Chatswood. The girls showed off their bowling talents with a few landing strikes throughout the Evening! It was lovely to see the girls encouraging one another, as a few tried the bowling for the first time. After bowling, the girls enjoyed dinner together

Macquarie Adventure

Due to the rain over the weekend, our youngest Boarders were treated to a shopping adventure to Macquarie. Many used the adventure to prepare for end of year celebrations whilst admiring the Christmas decorations in stores. The girls enjoyed lunch together whilst watching the ice-skating which was a treat!

What’s on this week:

Friday: Year 10 Balmoral Adventure and Year 7/8 Sleepover

Saturday: Manly Adventure

Sunday: Bondi to Bronte Walk and Lang Housewarming

View From My Window

Hi, my name is Sophie Webster! I am a Year 8 student and I have been Boarding since Year 7. I live on a property of about twelve and a half thousand acres with my parents John and Kerri and my big brother James. Our property is situated between Cowra and Boorowa in a little village named Reids Flat, New South Wales approximately four hours from Sydney.

The thing I love about Reids Flat is that you know everyone in the community because it is so small. On our farm we have lots of animals including sheep, cattle and a fat horse called Marge. We also have five dogs, four of them being work dogs and one being our pet black Labrador, Lottie. We also have a cat called Spike that always wants food and has a very soft spot for my brother James.

For a few years we have experienced lots of floods. This year was different though and we haven’t had that much rain so Dad is irrigating our crops, so they are tall and healthy. They should be ready to harvest around Christmas time.

When I am at home I also love riding on my CRF 230 and in the summer we go skiing with friends and family. I play with Lottie to give her a lot of exercise but I also take her in the buggy in which she sits in the front seat with you or on top of you!

Even though living on a farm can be hard and not knowing what the weather is doing, my family and I wouldn’t choose anywhere else! I love being home on the farm with my family that is a beautiful spot and I am very lucky to live there.

Boarder of the Week

Congratulations to our Boarder of the Week, the wonderfully talented Airiana Chan. Airiana joined us from Hong Kong at the start of the year, and has been a thoughtful, caring and supportive Boarding Sister to her younger peers. Airiana has contributed to our Boarding Community throughout the year, with outstanding musical performances at Boarders’ Chapel and community events. Airiana has an outstanding work ethic, and is always seen studying hard during the Evening Study Program. She never fails to uplift Goodlet House when practicing her violin on weekends.

Airiana is proud to be a Pymble Boarder, with her immaculate uniform and room. Her smile and friendly nature makes her well regarded among her peers. Congratulations Airiana on a well-deserved Boarder of the Week.

From the Chaplains

From the Chaplains

Lately, I have been thinking about seasons. Perhaps this has been because of the magnificent purple jacaranda trees that have begun to pop up in my street, surrounding neighbourhoods, and within the school. As they sway in the breeze and drop their purple flowers to make colourful carpets, I am reminded that Christmas is coming.

In Chapel, we have begun to celebrate the season of Advent. Each week we light the Advent candles and remember the hope, peace, joy and love that Christmas brings as we remember the birth of Jesus Christ. As part of our Religious Education classes for K- we have also been thinking about Advent. Each week we have been learning about this season as we remember; the hope that the Prophets foretold of the coming of Jesus – reminding us of the hope we have in Jesus and God’s promise, the peace that is attributed to the Holy Family – reminding us of the peace we receive through Jesus Christ (and the peace we pray over Bethlehem and its surrounding nations during this time of unrest), the joy of the good news shared by the angels to the Shepherds that Christ had been born – reminding us of the good news of great joy for all people, and the gift of love – reminding us of the gifts the wise men brought to baby Jesus and how God sent this baby to show the great love God has for all.

Also, in Chapel this term we have been celebrating the many seasons and events that take place in the lives of those within our Pymble family such as; Navaratri (A Hindu festival that celebrates the Goddess Durga), The birth of Bab (A day honouring the birthday of the cofounder of the Baha’i faith), The birth of Baha’u’llah (One of the 9 holy days in the Baha’i faith that honours the birthday of one of the co-founders), and Dussehra (The final day of 10 Hindi holy days that honours Asuj Navratras). And, before the term is finished, we will celebrate; Diwali (A five-day festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains that honours gods, goddesses, harvests, New Years, etc.), Guru Nanak Ji’s Birthday (A day commemorating the birth of Guru Nanak Ji who founded Sikhism), and Jain New Year (A day celebrated on the first day after the month of Kartika).

Seasons are a part of life. They come and go and sometimes even circle around again. Sometimes there are seasons in our life that bring us great joy and sometimes they may also bring sadness (and sometimes even both at the same time!). Whatever season we find ourselves in, let us be comforted by the words of King Solomon, who is attributed to writing the book of Ecclesiastes and for the stories told in the bible about his wisdom. Solomon dai, “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven”. May we embrace the seasons that we find ourselves in, knowing that at some point they will end, and new ones will begin. That the good times build our character, and the not so good times have the potential to do the same.

A Time for Everything

For everything there is a season,
a time for every activity under heaven.
A time to be born and a time to die.
A time to plant and a time to harvest.
A time to kill and a time to heal.
A time to tear down and a time to build up.
A time to cry and a time to laugh.
A time to grieve and a time to dance.
A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones.
A time to embrace and a time to turn away.
A time to search and a time to quit searching.
A time to keep and a time to throw away.
A time to tear and a time to mend.
A time to be quiet and a time to speak.
A time to love and a time to hate.
A time for war and a time for peace.

Junior School Grandparents Morning Tea

Students and grandparents were delighted to share this special day together last Friday. Chat and laughter abounded, stories and books were shared and the girls were thrilled to host their special guests and show them around. There were many memories made in this special time carved out of the busyness of the end of school year.

Fifty-year reunion

On Saturday 4 November, we welcomed the Class of 1973 back to the College for their 50-year reunion. It was a wonderful day of rekindled friendships filled with laughter, ‘remember whens’ and a delicious lunch.

We can’t wait to see you all again in 2028 ladies!

Year 6 Parent Cocktail Party

On Thursday 30 November from 6.30pm to 8.30pm Year 6 parents are invited to attend a parent-only cocktail party on Marden Lawn. The event coincides with the final event for the 2023 Year 6 class, a Silent Disco hosted by the Junior School. This gives our parent community the opportunity to celebrate the Junior School journey and the start of a new chapter for their daughters in Middle School.

We look forward to seeing you then!

Celebration Events to Close Out 2023

The year end is just around the corner and planning is underway for a number of events to celebrate. Dates to save include:

Work Experience Stories – Marie Claire Magazine

By Madeline Potts (Year 10)

Work experience commenced from the 25 to 29 September, at Marie Claire a leading fashion magazine, working in both the beauty and fashion industry sectors. I effectively exhibited professionalism, eagerness to learn, initiative, versatility, and ability to promptly follow directions. I adeptly managed the substantial volume of samples in the fashion cupboard, maintaining an organised workspace. I showed commitment to completing tasks within deadlines, reflecting a strong work ethic. Additionally, I had commendable communication skills that enhanced collaboration within the team, fostering a creative and efficient work environment. The role involved ;

  • Assisting in fashion cupboard
  • Manage large quantities of samples whilst maintaining a tidy fashion cupboard
  • See first-hand how fashion editors style and plan editorial shoots
  • Gain experience being a part of a creative team, in a professional environment
  • Gain insight into how fashion and beauty departments of a magazine operate
  • Beauty product management + shoot preparation
  • Image filling, captions, and archiving used imagery
  • Pitching and conceptualising beauty features’
  • Listened in on team meetings

Overall a valuable insight into the fashion industry and Fashion magazine, I would highly recommend.

Out of Hours Support for University Applications

Overseas Applications

In recent years, the interest in exploring overseas university pathways has increased exponentially at Pymble. This year we had over 100 separate applications to overseas tertiary institutions, including Oxbridge, Ivy League, Arts Colleges and for Sports Scholarships.

To see where our Alumni have studied internationally, visit the Overseas University Pathway page on our Futures@Pymble site.

We have recently reviewed our processes and will be launching a new structure for supporting students who are committed to applying for an Overseas University pathway.

If students are interested in exploring an overseas university are invited to attend an information session on Monday 13 November in the Library Learning Studio with the Futures Department.

In this session we will explore:

  • Initial research of overseas institutions, including pros and cons
  • Support structures at Pymble
  • Student responsibilities and commitments

In 2024, we will launch an online portal for student overseas applications and attendees will be invited to join to start their application process. The portal will be used to guide students in collection of supporting documentation as well as keeping them informed on the internal deadlines that are required for receiving support for their application.

If your student is interested in learning more about Overseas Pathways, please encourage them to sign up for the session which will be advertised via email and through the Portal.

Athletes and parents will explore how mindset impacts their approach to sports and life, learning strategies to nurture their mental game, handle setbacks, and enhance performance. Dan Haesler is a performance coach with a wide range of clients, including elite athletes and corporate leaders.

2023 Sportswomen’s Awards Night

The 2023 Sportswomen’s Awards Night was held last Friday 3 November and what a terrific event it was!

This year, the awards night was held at Miramare Gardens, and it was such a pleasure to be there to celebrate our students’ achievements in sport.

In 2023, award winners demonstrated a consistently high level of skill, exceptional leadership qualities and an infectious team spirit in their chosen sports.

We had the honour of hearing from a very special guest speaker, Melinda Gainsford-Taylor (AM). Melinda is one of the truly great runners of Australian athletics history. Melinda is a three-time Olympian, adapting her learnings to inspire and motivate Pymble students as a valued coaching staff member for the College since 2016.

As we celebrated and reflected on 2023, we also look ahead to several exciting developments which will greatly benefit our Pymble athletes future sporting endeavours in 2024 and beyond.

Please click these links to view the award recipients and criteria.

Remembrance Day

As you are no doubt aware, Remembrance Day falls on this Saturday 11 November. Remembrance Day is traditionally observed with a minute’s silence at 11.00am to commemorate the signing of the armistice to end the First World War.

To recognise and commemorate Remembrance Day when Saturday Sport is commencing, or has commenced, we would recommend the following:

  • Fixtures commencing at 11.00am (Touch Football and Water Polo): both teams should observe a minute’s silence prior to the start of the match.
  • Fixtures that will be underway at 11.00am (Tennis and Water Polo): all students should recognise that whilst they may not have the opportunity to commemorate the day at 11.00am, they should take a moment to reflect on what the day means to them.

Students will also be reminded to observe Remembrance Day when they arrive for their scheduled games.

Cricket

Cricket

It was a wet dreary day on Saturday 4 November and unfortunately our Pymble 2 team had to abandon their match halfway through due to the weather.

Luckily, the weather had cleared later in the afternoon for our Pymble 1 team to take the pitch against our old foe, Abbotsleigh. Our fearless captain, Dezi Magann-Jones (Year 10), top-scored with ten runs, hitting two boundaries in her innings. Tia Pillai (Year 7), Alice Mao (Year 9), Indigo Meldrum (Year 7) and Charlotte Henderson (Year 8) all batted well and were able to contribute to the total score

In the bowling attack Tia Pillai (Year 7) secured a wicket and Indigo Meldrum (Year 7) and Miesha Gal (Year 7) were strong with the ball with the opposition struggling to get runs off their overs. After a tough hit out, Abbotsleigh just snuck home and surpassed our total of 64 runs.

Northern Schools Cup

This Friday 10 November, Round 1 of the Northern Schools District Cup takes place, with Pymble playing Abbotsleigh at Knox Gillespie Fields. This competition is a great chance for our club and school students to join forces to represent the College!  Good luck to our Pymble cricketers!

Touch Football

Touch Football

In the third round of igsa Touch football on Saturday 28 October, five Pymble teams played tough matches at Frensham School, Mittagong. Pymble 6 have continued their winning streak and secured another victory with a score of 8 to 1.

Over the weekend, Pymble had a total of 11 teams playing. Seven teams came away with a win in their respective matches. I would like to give a special shoutout to the Year 7 Pymble 19 and Pymble 20 teams for their commitment to attending regular training sessions with their entire team. As a result of their hard work at training, Pymble 19 managed to secure a draw, while Pymble 20 won their match.

Good luck to all Pymble touch football teams for their upcoming matches on Saturday 4 November.

Round 4 of the 2023 Santa Sabina Invitational Volleyball Competition took place on Saturday 4 November. On a morning affected by rain, Pymble still managed to play all eight of their matches. Most of the games went down to the wire in each set, with most being very close and won by only two points. Pymble 4 put on a dominant display by outscoring Loreto Kirribilli by 75 to 31 points. Pymble 3 showed tremendous heart to draw with Sydney Girls High School after losing their first set by only two points. They were also missing four key players who were away for Volleyball NSW State Cup. Our two senior teams remain undefeated for the season after impressive wins against Meriden and Monte.

Senior First Report by Caitlin Costello (Year 11)

Pymble 1 showed resilience in this weekend’s match, battling through rain, mud, and overall uncomfortable wet conditions to overcome Meriden and win 2 to 0. The first set was extremely successful with our very own Charlotte Dhanu (Year 11) serving 11 times in a row to bring us to a 25 to 16 victory. Shoutout to Chloe Gu (Year 10) showing outstanding skills with constant and intimidating presence at the net. However, due to wet conditions, we had to adapt our play.

Setting switched from finger passing to bumping to minimise slips, which unfortunately happened a few times, and the covers were tighter to the net as the opposition did not want to risk hitting hard. Adaption to the opposition’s style gave us a better advantage to read their plays and ultimately score some points! As our team prepares on the court and at the gym for Nationals, we have also worked on some cheers to use which were practised throughout the match.

It’s important to regularly cheer as maintaining high energy is a necessity in such a fast-paced game. The second set showed the importance of this, where a slight slump in energy caused the game to tie 17 to 17. From this experience, we learnt as a team to keep the energy high and the technique better, as the constant serves from Meriden had begun to wear us down.

But as Pymble 1 does, we rose to the challenge to win 25 to 19. It’s been, and continues to be, such an amazing experience to watch my teammates develop into such talented players and I can’t wait to see how well we will do in future matches. Go Pymble!

Volleyball NSW State Cup

It was great to see Pymble represented in the NSW State Cup Division 2 Under 18’s finals today. Vanessa Liu (Year 11), Alicia Slobodian (Year 11), Isabella Chen (Year 10), and Vicky Hu (Year 10) represented the Acers who won in a very close and exciting match against Sydney North Volleyball, with two Pymble players in this team: Charlotte Dhanu (Yr 11) and Caitlin Costello (Yr 11).

Well done to our Pymble Volleyball players, we are very proud of you and look forward to you representing the college in the upcoming Volleyball Australia Schools Cup.

Sportswomen Awards Dinner

On Friday 3 November the Jazz ensemble and Stage Band performed for the Sports Women Awards Dinner, which was held at Miramare Gardens. I was so proud of the students as they showcased all that music can do, alongside the other busy discipline of sport. Zara Sandham is one of those students who seems to be good at both – she played her saxophone ably, before quickly changing and sitting at her table to receive her sports award.

Thanks to Mr Stafford and Ms Ashton for preparing the girls so well and to Mr Karl Schmidt for helping us transport the gear to Miramare Gardens.
