From the Principal

It was the most glorious of Summer Nights – and yes, that was the theme – for our Icebreaker last Friday. After years of restricted events, to see 530 parents and staff socialising in full flow on Gloucester Lawn was such a joy. The background music was just perfect, thanks to our talented musicians in the Senior School Jazz Band and our amazing Head of Learning for Performing Arts and Bands, Marcus Stafford, and Head of Co-curricular Music, Sarah Turner. The delicious cocktail food was served so graciously by our Year 12 Prefects, and our fabulous PPA parent convenors Sunny Hres and Julie Xie did a stellar job working with our Community Engagement team to organise many of the details of the night. A huge thank you also goes to our Chair of the Board, James Hunter, and College Board members, Rev Dr Chris Goringe and Suzy Nicoletti, as well as our Pymble Foundation Board of Simon Rothery, Alison Rothery, Rebecca Sullivan, Melinda Graham, Li-Enn Koo, Yehan Koo and Jessica Shirvington for coming along to spend the evening among friends and family in our community.

With such a great turnout and welcoming vibe, it’s no wonder we were all reluctant to leave. Certainly, it was a #PymbleProud kind of night; thank you to all those who contributed to making our event so special.

An insight into strategic priorities for 2023

Of course, this week marks the end of summer as well as the halfway point of Term 1, which is a great time to share an overview of the strategic objectives we are focussing on in 2023. For our newer families and those who joined Pymble this year, each of these objectives sits under one of four focus areas that provide the framework of our Strategic Direction 2021-2030, Watch Us Change the World. These focus areas are referred to as Academic Intelligence; Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence; and Digital Intelligence, and objectives are mapped out in three trienniums. As 2023 is the final year of our first triennium, we will review our progress at the end of the year before setting our next three-year plan, which will begin in 2024.

In the meantime, here are our top three strategic objectives for each pillar in 2023.

Academic Intelligence

  1. Now in its third year, our HSC Improvement Program in 2023 includes more HSC subject intensives, expansion of our study support program and the introduction of a study skills continuum.
  2. We are reviewing, developing and refining new courses, experiences, electives and pathways to achieve Future-focused Academic Excellence.
  3. Growing Learning Leaders involves developing a shared understanding of leadership excellence and goals that positively impact student learning.

Emotional Intelligence

  1. We continue to focus on building House Spirit and Belonging by establishing House zones for students participating in lunchtime activities on campus, diversifying the range of House activities and launching an Arts Festival.
  2. Being of service remains a priority as we develop a K-12 service continuum and engage students and staff in action and reflection to achieve community objectives and a ‘giving back’ disposition.
  3. Our acknowledgement and awards systems for students will evolve to include new structures for Recognising and Honouring Diversity of Achievement and Effort.

Social Intelligence

  1. We continue to Celebrate Diversity and Inclusion and use data and demographics-driven planning to inform the development of a framework for intercultural activities for students as well as recruitment strategies for staff.
  2. A focus on Skill-building for Belonging and Connectedness involves creating a communications toolkit, continuing to offer professional learning resources and expanding the curriculum to promote greater intercultural awareness and inclusion.
  3. In our quest Towards Zero Emissions 2030, we are evaluating our current emissions, confirming our target for 2030 and assembling the working committee and processes to implement actions.

Digital Intelligence

  1. New Digital Festivals aim to amplify the arts through STEM, with students participating in an international digital Shakespeare festival and STEM-focused dance performances. The Junior School STEM Festival will be extended to include an inter-house Robotics competition.
  2. The Pymble Passport will be introduced to students in Years 3, 4, 7 and 8 and become a tool in Compass Learning discussions to promote reflection, celebration of growth and progress in learning.
  3. Our focus on the Digital Curriculum for K to 12 includes growing STEM opportunities and participation in 7 to12, integrating digital experiences across different learning contexts in K to 6, and training staff to teach wise use of AI.

Hopefully, this gives you a broad overview of the strategy guiding your daughter’s learning at Pymble this year. What you can’t see in the summary above is the hours and hours of research and planning that sits behind each objective, or the multiple layers, interconnections, and complexities of our strategy, which ultimately aims to build the strengths, skills and attributes in each student that will allow her to thrive and be her best self in all aspects of life. It’s such an exciting time to be a student at Pymble, and we are so proud of our executive and academic teams who are leading the delivery of theses intents and playing such a formative role in your daughter’s educational journey. It really does feel like we are changing the world, together.

A sneak peek at next week’s IWD celebrations

Speaking of changing the world, next week is a huge week for the College. Australia celebrates International Women’s Day on Wednesday, and I am beyond excited to share that we have partnered with the Australian Financial Review to produce a bespoke IWD magazine celebrating women who are using their incredible gifts and talents to make their mark in business, sport, politics, science and many other fields. Best of all, many of these women are former Pymble girls, and the magazine also features opinion pieces from some of our current students.

In addition, we have partnered with Women on Boards to encourage corporate Australia to take one small but important step to advance gender equality, which is of course the aim of IWD. There will be IWD activities for students to take part in, plus the launch of a new series of podcasts featuring stories of Pymble alumni who are, without a doubt, making the world a better place through the work they do.

We can’t wait to tell you more when all is revealed next week!

A joyful weekend of stories and music!

Thank you to all of you who attended the College Icebreaker on Friday evening. What a glorious evening we shared! It was lovely to chat to so many of you and to meet so many new families. I am sorry if I didn’t manage to get to chat with you on the evening and I hope to be able to chat with you soon.

A huge thank you to all of you who brought your daughters to Band Camp on the weekend and a special thank you to all of you who volunteered and helped with the logistics of this event. These events are not possible without your support- thank you!

Mrs Bird and I had a wonderful time listening to the girls’ practise and perform on Sunday and it’s fabulous to see them so passionate about their music.  For many of our girls this was their first performance, so they were extremely courageous in sharing their emerging skills with our parent audience.

An enormous thank you to Mr Kurt Schweinberger, Deputy Director of Co-Curricular Performing Arts, who led this opportunity for our Junior School girls with Mrs Maria Lee, Miss Ellen Buckley, Miss Tiffany Farlow, Mrs Narelle Colby, Mrs Sarah Turner, Mrs Julie Hare and our many music tutors.

Junior School Parent Group – Self and Service

Thank you to all of you who attended our first JSPG meeting of the year. It’s always a good chance to catch up and share stories and I am always so grateful by the number of you who give up your time to support these events.

For those of you who were unable to attend, Mrs Lara Bird provided an overview of the new English and Mathematics curriculum with these key points to note:

  • 2023 –new K-2 English and Mathematics Syllabuses implemented in all NSW schools.
  • 2024 – Years 3-6 new English and Mathematics Syllabuses will be implemented.
  • Parent Academic Series
  • Term 1 Week 6 – Being a Junior Mathematician – on campus
    • Term 2 – Transitioning to Middle School

I spoke about our focus this term on ‘Self and Service’. Our Term 1 focus is on Kindness to Self and I’ve chatted with the girls about how important it is to know yourself and to value all that you are and all that you bring to each day and each opportunity. Please watch the video below to view a short animation by picture book author and illustrator, Peter Reynolds.

When we have self-assurance we can embrace each new experience as a chance to learn and grow. When we are happy being ourselves, we can understand that mistakes in learning are inevitable and a chance to challenge our thinking and grow. When we are kind to ourselves, we can show true kindness to others and embrace opportunities to make new friends from outside our existing social circle or culture. When we are happy being who we are we can go out into the world and make a positive impact.

Our Kindness Captains, SRC Captains and Sustainability Captains have been working on their launch of our Junior School Service mission for the term. On Tuesday 4 April 2023, each girl across K-6 will work in her House group to create a postcard to welcome refugees. This is part of the Student Rebuild project where the Bezos Family Foundation are giving $5 to humanitarian agencies supporting refugees around the world for each postcard they receive designed by a child before 9 June 2023. We hope to raise almost $4000 as a Junior School through this initiative led by our girls. Our Kindness Captains for Semester 1, Melanie Xu and Eden Ni, are going to extend the challenge to our Secondary School in the hope that as a College we can raise even more money and awareness for children and young people who are displaced from their homes.

Our swimmers and divers

I was very proud to cheer on our swimmers and divers at the ISPHA Swimming and Diving Competition this week. The girls swam and dived with Pymble Pride and I was most impressed by their sense of team as they supported one another throughout the day.

Year 1 Visit to the Chapel

How does the organ work?, What sort of sound does it make?, How many years does it take to learn to play the organ?, What are the pipes made of? and How old is the Pymble organ?

These are the many questions that our Year 1 students investigated as we visited the gallery in our Chapel. As part of our Science and Technology unit ‘What’s that sound?’, students listened to Mr Kurt Ison play the organ and were amazed to learn that the organ had over 1000 pipes. Thank you to Mr Kurt Schweinberger for organising such an exciting experience for the girls. During class, we also learnt about the various instruments in the orchestra, including instruments from the woodwind, brass, string and percussion families.

A message from Mrs Lara Bird, Deputy Head of Junior School – Academics

On Thursday, 23 February we launched our academic series for parents with a webinar on “Supporting Reading at Home”. Thank you to our parent community for joining us and for your positive feedback. Here are the suggested texts for our Junior readers referred to in our presentation.

Kindergarten suggested reading list

Years 1 and 2 suggested reading list

Year 3 suggested reading list

Year 4 suggested reading list

Year 5 suggested reading list

Year 6 suggested reading list

In our webinar we also talked about the reading environment, one of my most fond memories of my children when they were young was hearing them read aloud or reading to them curled up together on the sofa. We had a favourite family picture book which was regularly read! We would immerse ourselves in stories, travel to faraway lands, talk about the different characters, their traits and the problem or problems found within the story. We would even change the ending to a story or add in additional characters from other stories we had read!

Please find a selection of questions that you may want to ask your daughter when reading together. We hope this selection of questions provide opportunities for your daughter to build a strong understanding of texts read and also encourage rich conversations about literature.

Academic Series for Parents – Being a Junior Mathematician

On Thursday, 9 March the Junior School will be hosting “Being a Junior Mathematician”.  This presentation will be held on campus in John Reid Hall from 6.00pm to 7.00pm.  Parents will hear how Mathematics is taught in the Junior School, learn about the structure and content of the new K-2 Mathematics Syllabus, and the proposed 3-6 Mathematics Syllabus to be taught in NSW schools in 2024. There will be stations set up for parents to participate in hands on activities that encourage mathematical reasoning, problem solving, critical and creative thinking as well as experience how concrete materials are an important tool used in the teaching of Mathematics. Parents will be provided information on the flexible strategies used to solve addition and subtraction problems. If you would like to attend this event, please register using this link.

Academic Opportunities

Throughout the year there will be opportunities for our Junior School girls to participate in various opportunities and competitions. They may have an academic focus, encourage passions and interests or develop leadership skills and may involve a whole year group or a small group of students. Set out below are some of the current opportunities for the girls.

OzKidsinPrint – Kindergarten to Year 6

Calling all budding writers, poets and artists who would like to see their work published!

Girls in Kindergarten to Year 6 are invited to submit short stories, artwork or poetry as part of the OzKids in Print Competition. Student work may be chosen to be printed in the OzKids magazine throughout the year or selected as an overall winner. Entries close September 2023. For more information please visit: https://ozkids.com.au  Girls are asked to submit work to Mrs Lara Bird, Deputy Head of Junior School –Academics, who will upload work on behalf of students.

National History ChallengeYears 4 to 6

The National History Challenge is a research based competition for Australian students. The 2023 theme for the challenge is “Change and Continuity”. There are eight special categories students can enter: Australia’s Wartime Experiences, Democracy Matters, History of Sport, Indigenous History, Australian Women’s History, Using Primary Sources, Asia and Australia and Museum Exhibit. The theme “Change and Continuity” needs to be incorporated in the special category entry.

Entries are to be submitted online before 25 August 2023.  If your daughter is interested in undertaking research work as a historian, please email Lara Bird, Deputy Head of Junior School – Academics at lbird@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au

HARK Refugee Clinic

As part of the College’s focus on service, we will be supporting HARK Refugee Clinic at the Children’s Hospital Westmead. We are seeking donations of new stationery items to assist students at school. This could include lead or coloured pencils, pencil cases, pens, textas, exercise books, scissors and other small stationery items. These items can be brought to school by your daughter or dropped at the Junior School offices.  If you have any questions, please email kgiles@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au. We thank you for helping support this initiative.

PJ Factor – Years 3 to 6

In 2023, the annual Junior School PJ Factor will be held in Term 4 and will be in a different format. As part of the College Let’s Get Creative Day, students will have the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills for their peers. Dates and further information will be communicated to students in their Junior School PA/ Music lessons and via the College Newsletter.

Uniform and Appearance

All students are expected to wear their uniform correctly and with pride. Uniforms cannot be mixed with each season.  Junior School has a strict ‘no hat no play policy’, please ensure your daughter has her bucket play hat at school every day. The navy ‘P’ cap is only to be used for sport not PE lessons or in the playground.  The Junior School raincoat should be packed in your daughter’s school bag every day. Please make sure that your daughter’s uniform is named.

Jewellery: please note that we are doing lots of checks of uniform and particularly jewellery this week as we’re noticing lots of girls wearing jewellery which is not permitted by our College rules. If your daughter comes to school wearing earrings or jewellery which is not permitted, we will confiscate this jewellery and keep it safe until the end of the school day.

Please refer to pages 32 and 33 of your daughter’s student diary for further information.

Car line

Parents are reminded that parking along the LOWER Road is not permitted at any time.

Please be aware that girls arriving before 7.45am must attend Out of School Hours Care. Our playgrounds are not supervised before 7.45am.

From 7.45am, staff will be in attendance at car line and in the playgrounds. Students in Kindergarten to Year 6 may enter grade spaces to put their belongings in their lockers.

Please do not arrive before 2.30pm in the afternoon. Girls are escorted to car line after the conclusion of the school day at 2.45pm. We do our best to ensure drop off and pick up is a smooth process but we need your help! Please be patient with the queues at the start of this term and please only arrive at the set times.  Once co-curricular activities start, car line becomes much quicker.

Parents are reminded to remain in their car for the safety of both girls and adults and to assist with traffic flow.  If you are delayed in collecting your daughter please be reassured that she will be taken to Out of School Hours Care until your arrival.

For those who missed the JSPG Semester 1 Meeting, here is a video recording of the event:

We are very excited to announce that we have just (this moment!) secured the date of Saturday 6 May for our Family Fun Day and Movie Night. Please save the date! The Family Fun Day is the biggest Junior School social event of the year and it was a much-loved day in the last few years. This year we are going to focus on family values and building connections across our Junior School families by downsizing to more of a picnic, old-fashioned games and BBQ-style event (with a reduced entry price). We are in the very early stages of planning and if you have any thoughts about what you would like to see, please send your thoughts to pymblelcjspg@gmail.com

We have two year group events coming up for Year 1. There is a Year 1 Mums’ Night Out on Wednesday 15 March from 7.00pm at The Governor Hotel and Year 1 Dads’ Night Out on Thursday 23 March from 7.00pm at The Greengate Hotel.

There is also a KD class park play date coming up on 4th March from 10am to 12pm at St Ives Village Playground.

Hopefully you had an opportunity to connect with other Middle School families and your daughter’s Compass teacher on Gloucester Lawn. The following presentation was designed to provide an overview of the year ahead. Below is a link to a recording from the evening.

Year 7 Parent Information Evening

Year 8 Parent Information Evening

You will have received a survey following the event asking you to preference topics that would be of interest to you for future deliveries. Please access this link if you have not as yet responded.

During Combined Assembly on Tuesday our Year 7 students were formally inducted into their Houses, receiving their newly designed House Badges from their Year 12 House Leader. This was a warm and welcoming ceremony that acknowledged the importance of House connections and introduced exciting new initiatives that will involve the girls coming together across Years 7 to 12 at a number of events across the year. House pride was evident across the gymnasium.

Congratulations to our Year 8 Gloucester Gathering Leaders: Serena Cummings, Isabelle Port and Chloe Wei- who have been absolutely outstanding in their organisation of a variety of very popular events across lunchtime on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Last week they ran a karaoke competition for both Years 7 and 8 and this week it was a “Let’s Dance” experience. It is amazing how music brings us all together whilst at the same time allowing individuals to showcase their talents. The atmosphere was full of fun- a space where everyone was welcome. Please encourage your daughters to get involved. Below is a poster of the activities happening across the term.

Click here to see the Gloucester Gathering agenda for the remainder of the term.

It is great to see the enthusiasm of our Middle School girls when it comes to service to the college. Over the last weeks we have launched an initiative that invites each Compass group on a rotational basis to spend 10 minutes on Mondays working together to ensure our beautiful spaces are kept clean and tidy. Taking ownership of the environment around us demonstrates respect and appreciation for our campus.

Year 8 Dance Incursion Student Reflections

Today, Year 8 had the pleasure of participating in numerous dance workshops, teaching us skills and techniques to benefit our dancing experience for our PDHPE assessment task. Led by Pymble’s specialist Dance teachers, the all-day incursion was jam-packed with action and fun, from the start of the day through to the grand finale, the House Dance Off.

We began our day in the gym for a whole year warm up, where we followed two Dance teachers’ stretches and movements like a real-life version of Just Dance. There was music pumping in the background, and together we followed along, no matter how novice our movements were. Following the warm-up, we separated into groups and were assigned dance teachers who would assist us for the rest of the day. My group’s talented (and friendly) dance teacher taught us how to properly pirouette and leap, as well as more fundamental movements that would appear later in our assessment routine.

As a dance beginner, I was new to many movements (as was most of the class), but our teacher’s clear instructions made it easy for me to learn. Once we understood the basics, we got to choreograph a mini dance routine in groups and include some movements we learnt. This was my favourite part, as we used our creativity to form a unique dance routine to call our own. However, things got tricky when we began our assessment routine. The routine was fast and complicated, and I struggled with memorising it all.

Despite the setbacks, I managed to develop a mediocre understanding of the dance, knowing that we all had to perform it in the House Dance Off. When it was time for the House Dance Off, everyone split up into their House group to perform the routine, led by our House mascots (Year 8 House Captains). All the Houses performed with charm, but it was Hammond who won not one, but two awards for their enthusiasm and overall effort. I loved watching each House perform, since it was fun to see who remembered the dance and who didn’t.

Another great part of the House Dance Off was watching the House mascot’s dance off, and we all cheered for the person under the mask. This was a fitting end to conclude our day, and it’ll be one all year 8s remember. Altogether, the PDHPE Dance Incursion was a fun, exciting experience, and the skills we learnt are ones we won’t forget. Thank you to all the staff and dance teachers for your contribution today, and we can’t wait to perform our routine to you soon.

Written by Chloe Ayton (Year 8)

Last Thursday Year 8 had the exciting opportunity to attend this year’s PDHPE Dance Incursion. The day consisted of us participating in a series of workshops where we learnt an array of new dance skills and were taught an exhilarating routine that we will be performing for our assessment led by Pymble’s incredible Dance teachers. They helped us perfect our routine and helped us be more comfortable performing. Once we finished learning our dance the day ended with a house competition where each house competed with each other. Two different houses went against each other until we had a winner. I believe I can speak for the whole grade when I say this incursion was such a great experience to participate in. I will cherish this memory for the rest of my life.

Year 9 Parent Information Evening

Year 10 Parent Information Evening

We have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming our new students to the Upper School this term and have loved watching them make new friends and enjoy new experiences as they settle in. Last week we hosted them for a morning tea, at which I promised I will no longer call them new! So, officially… welcome to the family!

New Students

Our Compass Staff have been very creative in coming up with new activities for our Monday Fun-Day, and it was great to see some of our Year 9s enjoying the Agriculture Plot last week.

On Friday our first intrepid Residential Program adventurers arrive on their Great Return! Here they are on Monday morning before their epic five-day adventure.

Study of Barangaroo

On Friday last week Year 10 Mandatory Geography students travelled to Barangaroo as part of their Australia’s Urban Future topic. We travelled across the 22-hectare area, marvelling at the 11-hectare share of public land. This public area consists of beautiful Barangaroo Reserve, Nawi Cove and the Cutaway as well as the newly opened swimming area – complete with shark net – at Marrinawi Cove.

The variety of Indigenous-to-Sydney plant species was quite overwhelming and the flora has flourished with the higher than average rainfall last year. We were inspired by the environmental sustainability of the International Towers, Wynyard Walk and Scotch Row. The Gadigal people of the Eora Nation are recognised and acknowledged with artworks, signage, indigenous vegetation walks which really impressed our class.

All around us were signs of cultural inclusivity, rainbows for pride month and celebrations of all people of our society. The geographical significance of Barangaroo was not lost on our class and we felt it was a world class location, worthy of a global city and an excellent example of urban renewal and regeneration that recognises and deliberately focuses on social, economic and environmental sustainability.

These special people, and their families, help out in myriad ways including welcoming new families to the College, inviting Boarders to their homes and helping out with transport. We are grateful for their dedication, care and kindness.

It was a pleasure to be able to reciprocate some of their hospitality with a special BFF event last Friday. Our youngest Boarders invited 20 of their Day girl friends to enjoy dinner and a movie in Marden House, while their parents were at the College Icebreaker. Our Day school parents were not forgotten and invited to a pre-Icebreaker event in which the BFF program was discussed and information on ‘how to host a Boarder’ was provided.

Loving Love It

Our Boarders enjoyed another great weekend of activities, beginning with the BFF event.  Saturday was a beautiful day for a trip to the Glebe markets and Sunday turned out to be perfect for a trip to Wylies’s Baths at Coogee.  This weekend we will be heading in the opposite direction for a trip to Palm Beach and then into the city to sample ‘chocolate heaven’ at Max Brenner.

A few parents have been asking for a copy of the Love It program. Please click here to view the digital version or call in to the Houses for a hard copy of the program.

Learn It – Our Evening Study Program

Our evening study program Learn It is in full swing with tutors assisting the Boarders three nights a week. Boarders are emailed a link at the start of each week, where they can sign up for assistance in 20-minute time slots. This term we have the assistance of Ms Mimmo and Ms Grey from the Mathematics Department, Mr Long from Science and Mrs Collins from Learning Support. The teaching staff are joined by ex-students including Zohara Mendis and Elizabeth Backhouse who are valuable in assisting our Boarders with English, Math, Science and History subjects.

View From My Window – Skye Pockley

My name is Skye and I am in Year 11. I started Boarding at Pymble halfway through Year 8. I have a younger sister Phoebe in Year 8 and two brothers Sam and Tommy in Years 6 and 10. Having four kids away at Boarding school has made us all closer as we all come home with stories and experiences to tell, it also make the holidays much more fun because we know we have to go back to school by the end.

My parents run two properties, one west of Cobar which runs goats and one in Cootamundra which runs cattle and a few crops. Apart from spending time on the farm, my mum works and lives in Byron Bay in the far north coast of NSW and this is where my family calls home.

When we spend the holidays in Byron, I work as a Lifeguard and also at an Ice-Cream shop which is really great. My family is very involved in the Surf Club and that is where we spend most of our time. My mum is the secretary and my grandfather is the IRB Captain as well as a life member. All of us are patrolling members and compete when we can.

My favourite part of living in Byron is the freedom and the atmosphere. I love walking down the street to get an Acai Bowl, or a burger depending on the day. I also had an amazing opportunity after Christmas to help out with the Westpac Helicopter training. I was at work as a lifeguard and they brought the helicopter about 5kms out of Byron where we met them and the Police boat on the Jetski. I got to watch them practice drills with the police before the time came for me to be winched up into the rescue helicopter, other than it being really windy and the stingy spray it was a once in a life time opportunity I will never forget.

When we are at the farm in Coota, we often just spend time helping Dad out by mustering or processing cattle. We go down to the creek, when it’s not dry, and have mud fights. Sometimes we will take the camping trailer out into the paddock and camp the night. If it’s really hot we will just stay inside, I will probably end up making a cake and we just play inside in the aircon. We don’t go out to Cobar as often but when we do we go for drives around, climb up the escarpment or just play in the backyard if it is not too hot. I also drive into town a bit so I can get my hours up because it is about a 2 hour round trip.

Our house in Byron backs onto the Tallow Beach which is a really long beach and I love just going down there for a walk and a swim while watching the sunset. When my dad is down, he goes for bike rides down the beach all the way to the end and then back up to below the lighthouse. The short strip of national park separating our house to the beach makes a really pretty track to walk down to get to the beach as well as seeing echidnas, wallabies and rabbits hop around. My street in Byron is a bit of a mix. There are a couple of AirBnBs, a surfing coach, a musician, some annoying little kids and then there is us the loud house that gets the occasional shoosh from the neighbours. I love the freedom of being at home and getting to spend time with my family and animals.

As much as I love being at home I love coming back to school and seeing my friends and getting back into the swing of things. I row, and that takes up a lot of my time second to school, and although its busy I love it and have had some amazing opportunities through the sport. I love boarding at Pymble and will forever cherish the memories that I have made.

Boarder of the Week

Our Boarder of the Week this week has been a delight in the house with her bubbly nature and fun sense of humour. Congratulations to Gina Lau of Year 10! Gina always has an immaculate room, is reliable and punctual, and never fails to bring a smile to staff and Boarders’ faces. She is willing to try new things, active and involved, and polite and respectful to staff. Thank you Gina for being such a fun presence in our house!

Study Skills Continuum

Pymble is excited to be partnering with Dr Prue Salter to provide a Study Skills Continuum from Year 7 to Year 12 using the evidence based resources on the Study Skills Website. Research shows that students who are taught study skills and effectively use study periods during secondary school experience improved academic outcomes. Moreover, the positive impact is seen in post- secondary/university achievement.

All students have a timetabled study lesson within the Mind Body Spirit program that is supervised by their compass teacher. Once per term, students will be explicitly taught a study skill relevant to their stage of learning. These intentional focus areas will be reinforced in student’s academic subjects.

Self-directed study opportunities are proven to reduce a student’s cognitive load and reinforce self-regulation. Therefore, students are able to use the remaining study lessons to complete homework tasks, work on assessments or group tasks, attend special meetings or programs, etc. under the supervision of their compass teacher.

The study skills website and VC page are also available online asynchronously. Together, students and parents/carers can use the website to address a unique study skills issue or concern to complement the study continuum we deliver in MBS.

You may access the study skills website using the following credentials:

From the Chaplains

From the Chaplains

We continue on in the season of Lent. Every year during this season I think it is a great opportunity to stop and reflect on what our spiritual journey may be. Things in our life we want to change, giving ourselves more time or doing something which energises us.

In our chapel services last week, as the season of Lent was beginning, I encouraged the students in Years 3 to 12 to think about saying “no” to the voice which might make them feel small, wherever that voice may come from. I do not mean that moment of epiphany, when we see ourselves as small, in the scale of the cosmos and history – but rather, when we are made to feel small compared to others, when we are unable to celebrate who we are and what we have to offer. It is in this context which distinguishes between a good spiritual practice/discipline and a bad one, as a bad spiritual practice can make us feel small. Of course, this voice can come from someone in the playground, at home or all too often it is the inner voice we carry within.

Perhaps this is an opportunity for you if you want to give something up for Lent and don’t know what to let go of. Let go of that voice that makes you feel small, that makes you feel like you are not enough. Whatever your spiritual practice, good discipline will remind you that you are loved. If there is any bad behaviour or practice you need to work at changing or letting go of, you can practice changing that behaviour, or attitude, without needing to feel small.

Blessings on your spiritual journeys.

Thank you

A big shout out to all the new and returning parents and carers who attended our Icebreaker last Friday night. It was a great turnout and a fabulous night. We were so thrilled to witness the joy and excitement of those who attended and reconnected again with old friends and meet some new ones. We also heard from the Chair of the Pymble Foundation, Mr Simon Rothery, about the work we are doing around philanthropy at Pymble to support programs, people and places. I look forward to providing more information about this and upcoming Foundation events in the coming weeks.

International Women’s Day next week

International Women’s Day is one of my favourite times of the year as it presents a wonderful opportunity to discuss and advocate for the importance of accelerating gender equality for girls and young women. Now really is our time to lean in and build on the great work and inroads being made to promote a more equal world. Please look out for our new advertising and communications from next week.

The co-curricular and curriculum areas of Music, Drama, Language Arts, Dance and Speech and Drama are vibrant rhythms in the resonating heart of the Performing Arts at Pymble.

I have been lucky in the last few weeks to explore the past heritage of Performing Arts at Pymble and to consider what has changed and what has not changed over the years.

Much has changed in the Performing Arts world at Pymble. Spaces, technologies, opportunities abound in ways that could not have dreamed of in earlier years.

What has not changed is the passion and commitment of the practitioners and the students.

Music teachers and students have presented performances for multiple parental events over the last few days and these performances inherent in the resounding successes of these events. In the same few days, Music teachers have led a joyously creative Junior School Music Camp which engaged and delighted the participating students.

Language Arts students have begun several competitions with much scholarly rigour and travel across Sydney to compete at other school locations.

Classes in Dance, Speech and Drama and Co-curricular Drama continue to gallop apace providing experiences that encourage students in their performance skills.

Speech and Drama has vaulted the broad terrain of the Pymble landscape to find a new and nurturing home in which  Speech and Drama students are taught with assured expertise and excellence.

Some exciting events coming up in the next week!

Please consider attending the exciting and innovative production of A Chorus Line which unites all of the performing arts in a student driven production. Click here to purchase tickets.

Celebrating the first Empower Lunch of 2023!

EmPOWER Lunch is an initiative run by the Learning Prefect Portfolio at Pymble. We facilitate an opportunity for students to meet inspiring leaders in diverse industries, to allow insights to be gained on the ever-evolving workforce. This term, a group of students from Years 9 to 12 had the opportunity to talk to Selena You, a 2019 Pymble graduate and a fourth-year Bachelor of Commerce and Laws student at the University of Sydney.

Selena shared her experiences as a university student and an intern at various companies, including Allier Capital, National Bank of Australia, and Macquarie Bank. It was insightful and inspiring to hear about Selena’s experience at different investment firms and the sort of work students could expect if interested in such a field.

Through her own experience, she encouraged students to take up every opportunity, whether it be applying to internships or networking – as there is so much to learn and some of the best opportunities are right here, at Pymble. In addition, Selena highlighted the flexibility of university courses and how there’s still room to change and grow – transferring degrees is very doable.

A special thank you to Selena for her time to share her valuable experience with our students, empowering Pymble students to their future career pathways. Thank you so much to all the girls who have joined this term’s emPOWER Lunch and hope to see you all next time!

Sydney Science Park Stem Challenge Planning Day

Planning is well under way for the fourth annual Sydney Science Park Stem Challenge, which our Elective Geography students will participate in throughout Term 2. Western Sydney is the heart of one of the largest infrastructure projects in the developed world. It is expected that by 2050, the population west of Blacktown will be over 1 million people – the same as Adelaide today.

At the centre of this is the Sydney Science Park – a $5 billion smart city, which is being developed by Celestino. Visiting the site pictured below requires all powers of imagination to visualise the thriving city it will become. By 2026, the pile of dirt will be Luddenham Metro Station. 2026 will also see the opening of Badgery’s Creek airport, which is 3km south of the Sydney Science Park.

Careers in and associated with urban development projects are a key future growth area. Studying Elective Geography at Pymble provides amazing opportunities for young women to participate in authentic STEM opportunities. Students work alongside industry experts, solve complex real-world challenges, develop crucial future skills and make a difference to Sydney’s future… which might inspire a career pathway in one of these areas.  An opportunity not to be missed!

Pymble AFL had fantastic results over the weekend with five out of seven teams winning, with high scores. Our Pymble 3, Senior team, took victory over Wenona School with a win of 60 to 0. Seniors, Pymble 1 won 86 to 4 over Brigidine College and our Junior, Pymble 6 team beat Monte Sant’ Angelo 110 to 0. Pymble 2 and Pymble 7 were narrowly defeated by their opposition but showed true Pymble spirit and never gave up.

It is great to see the improvement in all our Pymble teams. I am particularly impressed with the new Year 7 students in the program, their attitude at training is fantastic and it is reflected every Saturday out on the field, great job!

Badminton

Well done to all our Badminton players over the weekend. Yet again, we had some great results and a lot of wins.

Our Senior teams dominated this weekend, which has given our players extra confidence leading into round four this weekend.

Congratulations to our Senior First team for coming away with another win.

Elina Wu (Year 12) has been an outstanding role model as the 2023 Badminton Captain to all our Badminton players this term.

Elina and I had a chance to chat to some players last Saturday, and here is what they had to say;

What do you love about Badminton?

“We love the social aspect. The coaches are supportive and friendly”.

“They are like our family, big Badminton family”.

“It provides the exercise we need”.

“I have made friends from Badminton”.

“It clears my mind from studying”.

“Even though we are all at different levels, everyone is very inclusive”.

Would you encourage your friends to play badminton?

“Of course, because we interact more and become closer to our teammates”.

“Yes! we can bond as friends and grow and improve together”.

“Yes, it challenges yourself to try something new”.

“Yes, it has been a great opportunity for older and younger players to interact more”.

It is always so wonderful to hear students enjoying themselves and finding a love for sport. It is without a doubt the reason why Badminton continues to grow every year at Pymble

Wishing our Pymble Badminton players, the very best of luck heading into this weekend’s round.

Pymble North Shore Cricket Competition

We are now at the halfway point of the Pymble Cricket season. I would like to commend the students on their attendance and attitude at trainings. Because of this we have seen a noticeable improvement in their skills on Saturdays. Our cricketers play in a club competition facing some of the top players in each region, many of whom also play high-level representative cricket. The resilience that is on display each Saturday is commendable! It has hard work batting and fielding in 30 plus degree heat!

Swimming

On Monday 27 February the Pymble Swimming, competitive stream, held our Term 1 Mini Meet. We had 80 swimmers participate from the Tiger, Sharks, Mini, Star and Cadet squads. The senior squads, Pride and Engine, were the team leaders for each lane and mentored the younger swimmers in racing and team spirit.

The Mini Meet provides a platform for the young swimmers to gain experience of racing in a fun environment with their friends and team.

At the start of the Mini Meet we had one swimmer from the Pride, Engine and Cadet Squads talk to the younger swimmers about race day, teamwork and sharing their experiences of racing.

The coaches would like to thank all swimmers and parents for their support to make our Mini Meets an event that always brings great energy, happiness, and learnings.

With the undesirable combination of Covid-19 and flooding across the state, it’s been three years since NSW All School Triathlon Championships has taken place, and it was beyond exciting to see our triathletes back in competition. Across the two days, we were blessed with blue skies and a steady breeze and were set for some fantastic races and results.

We are now going into our third year offering Qualifications in Dance with the 2023 registered students ready to start this term. Students who complete the courses now have a Nationally recognised qualification to add to their resume for career opportunities in the arts. We have already started employing our qualified Cert III in Assistant Dance Teachers in our own Dance Program.

For more information about the courses please, click here to view the prospectus.

What some students have said about Qualifications in Dance

Bonita Xie – Completing the Certificate II in Dance course was an amazing experience! Not only did it allow me to experience a different side of the onstage action, through assistant teaching a class, but it also helped me learn more about the backstage component of dance as well. Being able to see how the stage and theatre works and how the costumes and make-up of a piece can enhance the performance was eye-opening. Through this course I was also able to become more aware of my body and technique, making improvements along the way. Overall, Cert II immensely improved my dance knowledge, both onstage and offstage, and was an enjoyable experience.

Denise Wang – The Certificate II in Dance course was highly educational as it allowed me to broaden my knowledge within the dance industry through both practical and theory exercises. It was an eye-opening experience with many benefits! Additionally, this course allowed me to create new bonds with different girls amongst the Pymble Dance family and strengthen personal skills.

Olivia Eichmann – Certificate 2 in Dance was a great opportunity to understand the many important elements of the dance industry. We undertook exercises, research, experienced performances, learnt from professionals and performed throughout this course. I was able to learn more about the technical foundation of dance, recognise the history and growth of this art and apply newfound knowledge backstage to understand the many components that help to create a dance performance. This course helped broaden my perspective of the performing arts and become even more fascinated by the industry.

Music

Congratulations

Isabel Dean (2022 Graduate) performed at Encore on Monday 27 February, which was held at the Opera House. Mr Stafford, Mrs Colbey, Ms Zelzter, Mr Schweinberger and I travelled with girls from Year 11 and 12 to witness this spectacular achievement. Encore nominations are given to students who achieve the highest mark for their performances and/or compositions. Isabel was selected from many nominations and demonstrated her superior skills. We were all Pymble Proud.

Performance Jackets

Please return any performance jackets that are no longer required. We are running low. They can be returned to the Music Admin office.

All new girls must have a performance jacket – these will be worn at the upcoming Ensemble Concert, over the Pymble Music T-Shirt with black pants. Please make sure you have the correct attire for the concert. New students can visit Gladys in the Music Office to be fitted for a jacket. All students will receive an email with their jacket is ready for collection.

Music Support Group Meeting

This is a group of volunteer parents who offer to assist the Music team with fund raising, food service, dedication to the Music students, and general help when we need it. If you would like to be part of this wonderful team, please come along to our first meeting for 2023:

Tuesday 7 March at 7.00pm in the Music Gallery. If you would like to be part of the team, but unable to make it, you can email Elizabeth Toh at Elizabethtoh@gmail.com

We look forward to having you on board and helping our music students sail through life having music in their souls.

Thank you! – Stage Band

Mr Stafford and the girls from the College Stage Band performed at the Icebreaker event on Friday night. These students continually amaze us with their ability to lighten the room/venue with classic jazz numbers. Thank you all for giving up your Friday evening.

Over the last weekend, our fabulous Music staff were part of the Junior School Music Camp. Girls from Year 3 strings, Year 4 Band, Stanhope Band and Grainger Band came together to work on repertoire over the course of either 1 or 2 days, depending on their ensemble.

It is an enormous commitment from our girls and their families to be part of this, but I am forever humbled by the dedication of our staff. Mr Schweinberger put together a fabulous program of music making, swimming with obstacle courses, and eating activities. Thanks to Mr Schweinberger, Mr Stafford, Mrs Colbey, Ms Ashton, Ms Zeltzer and Mr Rossman, along with all our fabulous tutors who helped tutor our girls to produce some fine music. Thanks to Mrs Brown and Mr Griffiths for their support and encouragement of the Music program in the Junior School.

Debating

Chelsea Shi (Year 11) and Sophie Guo (Year 8), recently competed the 37th Annual Stanford Invitational Speech and Debate tournament on 12 to 14 February. The girls participated, online, in ten debates over the course of the three day tournament, half being preprepared motions and half being impromptu motions. Despite the time zone challenges and high calibre of competition, Chelsea’s team won the competition and Sophie’s team were placed third. Well done girls!

FED

FED welcomed MLC last week and while not as successful as the previous week when they won every debate, our FED debaters enjoyed hosting.

ISDA

Last week Pymble ISDA debated well at Redlands.

Debating Supper

Next Friday 10 March, FED and ISDA will be in the Colonnades. As we are double hosting, with both competitions on site, parents are asked to contribute a plate. This is optional. All contributions are to be brought on the evening or dropped into Mrs Hubbard’s new office in the Music Colonnade, ground floor. Thank you! Ideas include – sandwiches, dip and biscuits, cheese, chips, cheezels, cupcakes, biscuits, fruit etc.

Social Debating Update

We are still sourcing a supervisor for Social Debating on a Friday evening at Pymble. If you know of anyone with a WWC number who may be interested, please inform Mrs Hubbard at BHubbard@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au

Parents are invited to join our Language Arts parent support chat: https://chat.whatsapp.com/Br6FdmuxZy752ttBDWBQ8D

House Debating

A revival of lunch time House debating is coming later this month. Stay tuned for details on the portal!

Public Speaking

Thank you to all who auditioned. The standard was very high. Results will be released on the completion of all catch up auditions.

Pymble will host a Rostrum heat on 22 March, at Pymble.

Pymble girls take part in the Starlight Super Swim

Pymble girls take part in the Starlight Super Swim

The Pymble Ladies’ College Swim Team has been making a splash over the last month for a very worthy cause, taking part in the Starlight Super Swim to raise funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

In particular, the team have selflessly given their time to extend their support towards Helen Nguyen (Year 12) and Chloe Bookless (Year 10) who were diagnosed with leukaemia last year in the Term 3 holidays and January, respectively.

Throughout her time at Pymble, Helen has been an integral part of the community through her involvement in volunteering, co-curricular music and academics. Helen exhibits warmth, integrity and courage, and despite undergoing treatment, she remains steadfast in her care and attention towards her peers. Since learning of her diagnosis, Helen has undergone three cycles of chemotherapy and remains committed to her battle.

Diagnosed at the beginning of 2022, Chloe spent time being treated at Randwick Children’s Hospital before bravely enduring 12 months of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, spending the majority of the year in hospital with rare visits to home. With the everlasting support of her family and friends, Chloe recently finished her treatment and has begun her one-year maintenance period.

At the start of the challenge the Pymble Swim Team set a goal of raising $15,000, and as of this moment have bettered that target having raised $17,309.

Donations will be accepted until next Monday 6 March, so please consider showing your generous support to Helen and Chloe as they continue their fight, as well as the Pymble Swim Team who have put in an extraordinary amount of effort to help their peers.

Please click here to donate and read more about Helen and Chloe’s journey.

How incredible was the weather on the evening of the annual PPA Icebreaker!

Thank you to all parents, carers, teachers, staff, College Board members, Chair James Hunter and Dr Hadwen who made this night so memorable. We had a wonderful night of drinks and an ample selection of canapes, and despite multiple hints ranging from formal dismissal by our Principal and clanging of the glasses, to turning off individual lights and eventually completely shutting down all the school lights, there were many parents who lingered and continued to enjoy a night of fun conversation and great company.

We would like to give a special thanks to the student Prefects, musicians and Mr Marcus Stafford who graciously served on the night. The jazz music and songs made the night so much more vibrant and relaxed.

To all our Boarding parents, thank you for making time to attend the event. We understand it may have been a long drive home, but we loved having you with us to join in the fun.

We have an e-gallery available with numerous photos taken on the night by Naomi Reiter from Naomi Reiter Photography. Please feel free to download any of the photos by clicking here.

To access the photos, enter your personal email, and then enter the gallery password: xmK7owpfF8

One final note of thanks to all our parent year group co-ordinators and leaders from the Junior School and Senior School and Meredith Coleman, Kelly Mancey and Kate Walther from the Community Engagement team who worked tirelessly to gather our parents, carers and staff to make this event possible.

For parents and carers who were not able to attend Icebreaker, the following events will give you the opportunity to meet other parents and carers within and across various year groups:

We trust you will take some time to recover from your hectic schedule over the weekend and please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or wish to get involved with the various events during the year. Please feel free to email me at sunny.hres@gmail.com.

Term 1 Bus Registrations are now open!

Term 1 Bus Registrations are now open!

Registrations are now open for the Pymble private bus service during Term 1 – all students must be registered to catch the bus and must have a current student ID card to tap on and off each trip.

The bus service commences on Tuesday 31 January and concludes on the last day of term with the scheduled afternoon run on Wednesday 5 April 2023.

Please check the bus stops and times for your preferred bus route.

Registration for the Pymble bus service is offered on a term-by-term basis, in two formats:

  1. Term registration enables the student to access the bus service every day in the morning and afternoon. The charge is currently set at $390 per term.
  2. Flexible registration enables the student to register for specific day(s) with a choice of morning and/or afternoon runs. The charge is currently set at $6.50 per trip.

While face masks are no longer mandatory on Pymble buses or all public transport options as per the updated COVID-19 rules in NSW, students are encouraged to wear one when travelling on Pymble buses. Existing government guidelines for household contacts/positive cases remain in place.

Notification of upcoming price increase

The College is committed to supporting our families by providing the Pymble bus service as an option for students travelling to and from school

Unfortunately, increased running costs due to inflationary pressures on all operating expenses, particularly fuel, has necessitated an increase in our bus registration fees. We are conscious of this impact on our families and have endeavoured to keep this increase to a minimum.

From Term 2 2023, bus registration fees will be as follows:

Full Term registration: $430.00 per term

Flexible registration: $7.50 per trip

Please contact College Services via collegeservices@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au if you have any further questions about transport to and from Pymble Ladies’ College.
