From the Principal

From the Principal

The HUGE weeks keep rolling on and we are now more than a third of the way through the term, believe it or not. In addition to all the exams, showcases, and celebrations of learning and community, we are also busily finalising exciting plans and new adventures for our girls in 2025. This includes initiatives from students who have come to see me or their mentors throughout the year to share their thoughts on a wide range of topics across the College, ranging from co-curricular interests to leadership, service and culture. It feels me with joy to hear our girls speak with such passion, knowledge and conviction about the changes they want to see in their world.

In assembly this week, I shared two messages I would like all our girls to know as they reflect on the year that was and the year ahead.

We truly value you for exactly who you are and what you bring to Pymble. With or without a leadership badge, every student is encouraged to share their own ideas to make our school, our community, our world a better place for all. You can always talk to your Head of School, Ms Rockwell or me about your passion projects and how to make them happen. A case in point is Her Village Festival, which was held here on campus last Sunday. This stemmed from an idea Tahmara Thomas (2022) had in Year 11 to make newly arrived refugees from Afghanistan feel welcome in our community through the international language of football. It was brought to life in her final year of school, thanks to Mr Meagher and a team of external and internal supporters, and is now an important regular event in our local community.

As I mentioned in assembly this week, some of the biggest mistakes in life are made when we automatically think we are right, jump to conclusions, or fail to consider there might be more to the story than we know.

People who have open hearts and minds, like Tahmara, who considered the perspective of refugees in our community, are more likely to consider new scenarios as opportunities to learn and grow, and ultimately help those around them.

So my second message to students is this: Stay curious. Be courageous. Be open.

Make suggestions. Use your voice. And if you don’t understand a leadership decision or direction the College is taking, do what we do best at Pymble, which is to ‘Go Direct with Respect’ and ask questions to learn more. If something is frustrating, confusing or not making sense to you, try responding with, “Help me understand why this is important to you.” This almost always sheds more light on the discussion and leads to a more informed and collaborative outcome for all involved.

It is now my pleasure to handover this column to our new Head Prefects, Ang-Ya Koo and Emily Abadee, who are inviting all students to stay curious and share their ideas for the Prefect theme for 2025.

Over to Emily and Ang-Ya…

“Thank you to Dr Hadwen for giving us this opportunity to introduce ourselves and share our theme for next year: 2025 Come Alive!

“We didn’t accompany our theme reveal in this week’s assembly with a circus, tightrope, or a flash mob to kick things off because our students are the real stars of this show. We want to hear from you all. What do you think 2025 Come Alive means for our Pymble community?

“There are Never Enough chances for your voices to be heard or to share A Million Dreams with us, so now is your chance to Rewrite the Stars and think about what Come Alive really means to you.

“For some, it’s chasing the dreams that get you out of bed in the morning like The Greatest Showman, P.T. Barnum. Perhaps you have a true passion for sport, music, or academics that pushes you forward and motivates you.

“Coming alive could also be about working together and supporting each other like Zac Efron and Zendaya soaring on the trapeze. It could mean cheering each other on at sports games or offering a helping hand to your peers when things get tough.

“Perhaps coming alive means embracing your true self; standing up and having the courage to say This is Me and letting your individuality and spirit shine.

“Our aim is to make this theme all of ours to share.

“So, how can students get involved? In each School Office, you’ll find slips of paper for you to tell us what Come Alive means to you. Your Compass teachers will also give you some time to contribute during the next few weeks. We’ll collect and read every single response and share your ideas with everyone at our next Combined Assembly.

“And, if you see us around, feel free to let us know what you think in person or just send us an email.

“We’re so excited to see your ideas about how 2025 comes alive for you.”

Windows into Learning

This week, we take a plunge into the geological process of erosion and the wonderful world of words, thanks to Miss Kennett and Mrs Reynolds.

Science rocks in the Junior School!

This term in Year 4 Science, students have been immersing themselves in the fascinating study of earth’s natural processes and the impact of human activity on our environment. Over the past few weeks, our focus has been on soil erosion, and it all began with a visit to the Senior School Rock Room to explore the three rock types.

Armed with materials like bark, straws, netting, rocks and paddle pop sticks, the girls crafted three unique models to prevent soil erosion. Carefully layering soil in tins and adding chosen materials on top, they poured water in a controlled way, observing how each model influenced water clarity, flow speed, and soil movement. This sparked powerful “aha!” moments, as students enthusiastically shared insights on erosion, connecting it to real life examples and brainstorming strategies for prevention.

When you read a great book, you don’t escape from life, you plunge deeper into it.”

In a world of change, literature remains a constant – a steadfast source of connection, of inspiration, of challenge. Our incoming cohort of Year 12 English Extension 1 students have begun a new journey this term, with literature by their side as an ever-faithful companion. Already, the classrooms in which we do our thinking are spaces where students feel allied in their love of literature and, correspondingly, well supported to ‘plunge deeper’ into their thinking about texts.

We begin with the course’s common module, Literary Worlds – an investigation into the ways of worldbuilding with the written word. This week, we have been evaluating different frameworks we might use to illuminate the qualities of texts and the ephemeral experience of exploring a world hidden within the ambiguities of language. Our evaluations, debates and discussions about each learner’s preferred way of ‘diving in’ to texts sharpens students’ critical thinking, metacognition, and collaboration skills.

The Year 12 English Extension course is one of rigour, depth and rich complexities that equips students with the skills needed to become self-directed learners and which gives students the opportunity to regularly review and reflect on their thinking and skills, and the products of these. Students plunge more deeply not only into literature and thus into life, but they come to know themselves better as readers, learners and thinkers.

Last week, each of our girls had the exciting experience of seeing what her learning will be like in 2025. We were so proud of the courage and Pymble spirit our girls demonstrated as they moved into their new grade, met new teachers and began to make new friends. Many girls expressed apprehension at the start of the day but by the end of the day, they left saying it had been a brilliant day!

Junior School Parent Group (JSPG)

This week, we formally farewelled and thanked our outgoing JSPG leaders. They have been a fabulous team who have worked tirelessly to run so many successful events, creating memorable memories for our girls to treasure. I am deeply grateful to them all and the time and energy they have gifted to our school community over the last couple of years.

2024 JSPG Committee: Leah Deutscher, Percy Yang, Shweta Deshpande, Leisa Whitehead, Jessica Du, Emma de Bilde, Colleen and Hanson Han, Amiee Birch, Leyya Li and Mimi Hu

I am excited to be working with the incoming JSPG team and I look forward to the many new memories we can create for our girls and parents in the coming year. Thank you for being courageous in stepping forward to help foster our community spirit and community of kindness where all feel welcomed and included.

2025 JSPG Committee: Deeviya Jolapara, Prad and Tara Navaratnam, Selina Kadeer, Jay Jay Xu, Sam Birch, Owen Brandner, Sheryl Wang Shi, Lalenya Waterhouse, Percy Yang and Betty Zhu

Kindness Champion

This week, I want to celebrate the courage and kindness of Elliyeen Azhar (Year 1) who recently donated her hair to help children battling cancer. We are so proud of Elli and her care, courage and selflessness.

Grandparents’ Day

Tomorrow, we welcome our grandparents to school for lunch and then a musical performance by all our Junior School girls. We know that whilst some girls are lucky enough to grow up living with or near their grandparents, there are others who have grandparents living far away or whom they cannot see, and we take care to ensure all girls have a lovely lunchtime on that day so no one feels left out. In our experience, many grandparents who are able to come then ‘adopt’ multiple children for the day who are friends with their grandchild which again shows the deep kindness that flows through our community.

OSHC Registrations

It is with thanks to parents and carers that we have now surpassed 90 per cent of students (Kindergarten to Year 5) being registered with OSHC. This important step not only provides a backup plan for when pickup may not go as planned but will allow students to be eligible to select co-curricular activities for 2025 (including tennis, co-curricular music and swimming).

Separate instructions will be shared via MyPymble notices that demonstrate where to find your OSHC registration number within Kidsoft, as this number will be a mandatory field when registering for 2025 co-curricular activities on 20 November 2024.

Lunch and Recess orders

A reminder for girls to pack a drink bottle for recess and lunch each day. Parents can order recess and lunch online through Flexischools. The cut off time for ordering on the day is 8.00am.

If your daughter has an allergy or dietary alert, please select Allergy Junior Recess or Allergy Junior Lunch so this can be highlighted for the kitchen.

If your daughter has no allergy/dietary alert please select Junior Recess or Junior Lunch.

Wellbeing Weekly – A message from Mrs Kate Giles – Head of Wellbeing K-6

Thank you to the parents who have attended the parent Wellbeing Series this year. The final session for 2024 that was held today focused on supporting your daughter manage worries, change and uncertainty. For those who were unable to attend, some of the key messages from the session included:

  • It is a natural part of childhood to have some worries and fears.
  • These worries and fears can be triggered by everyday school events.
  • Supporting children to face situations that cause them worry or fear helps build resilience and self-confidence.
  • Worries and fears can become an anxiety diagnosis when they do not go away, are intense or overwhelming and they start to significantly impact the child’s everyday life (for example, they avoid places or people).
  • About seven per cent of children aged between eight and 12 receive an anxiety diagnosis.
  • Things you can do to support your child with their worries or fears include:
    • Remaining calm (checking your own feelings)
    • Helping your daughter share her emotions and express how she is feeling
    • Give her time to share – listen, empathise and validate her feelings
    • Gently encourage and support your daughter to face the situations she is anxious about
    • Praise her for facing situations that cause her worry and fear
    • Avoid criticising your daughter for being afraid or worried
    • Know when to step in or step back- when does she need extra help with her emotions?
  • Some useful resources include:

We will be holding further parent Wellbeing Series sessions in 2025. If you have any feedback from the sessions or there are any particular areas that you would like to learn more about in sessions next year, please email me at kgiles@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au

Junior School Ensemble Concert: Symphony of Sounds

Last night’s Symphony of Sounds Junior School Ensemble Concert was a wonderful celebration of participation, excellence and teamwork. With over 250 choir, strings and band students from Years 3 to 6, the Gillian Moore Centre for Performing Arts stage was alive with music, spanning Baroque to Jazz, Disney favourites to the vibrant sounds of Spain.

Backstage, the energy was high as students prepared for their performances, supporting each other and sharing in the excitement. Thank you to everyone who attended the event. Proceeds from the concert will go to the Music Support Group, helping to provide new instruments and allowing the College to commission new works for future performances.

Looking ahead, we invite you to join us for the upcoming College Christmas Celebration, held in the College Chapel on Sunday 1 December. The evening will feature our talented College strings ensembles and choirs, promising to be a lovely way to usher in the festive season. We hope to see you there!

Last Friday, we hosted Links Day for our incoming 2025 Year 7 students. It was a wonderful day that showcased all things Middle School. I would like to acknowledge the many students who acted as ambassadors for the College and truly made all our visitors feel most welcome. Our Transition Leaders were outstanding. I would like to give a particular thank you and congratulate Amber Lewis and Jessie Li who addressed the cohort, sharing their own transition experiences and encouraging everyone to embrace the many opportunities on offer.

Last Friday, across the College, the girls had a chance to attend the Have a Go Expo at lunchtime. This was a fantastic introduction to an enormous suite of opportunities. Hopefully, your daughters have come away excited about their future co-curricular activities. So many friendships and wider connections happen as a result of joining after-school activities and we are very fortunate to have so many choices.

The team is progressing through our Middle School leadership interviews. The confidence and initiative of the candidates continues to impress. Hopefully, next week we will be able to finalise the positions and share this with our community.

Rianne Leung (Year 8) travelled to Melbourne to attend the Australian Open Women’s Foil Fencing Circuit #2 last Friday. Rianne made it to the podium and was awarded a prestigious Silver Medal.

A message from Victoria Harrison, Head of Upper School

One of the Upper School’s key features is providing a range of experiences to ensure students develop their perspective whilst in this stage of their education. Year 10 have had their heads down this week for the examination block. This should help to ensure they understand that, whilst important, their examination block is not the be all or end all of their existence and their results and accompanying feedback help to guide them positively toward their experiences in the Senior School. The Futures team is working on a program of activities to further support the girls in this transition.

It was great to see several Upper School girls involved in the HerVillage Championship events over the last few weeks. Thank you to Sofia Altorf and Sienna Phair (Year 10) for sharing their experience:

Over the past few weeks, a few Upper School girls were given the opportunity to participate in the HerVillage Championship events. This program aims to welcome girls of recently arrived Afghan refugee families into our local community through soccer.

There were previously two meet and greet events with the refugee girls where we were able to introduce ourselves, share stories and engage with them through team building exercises. Last Sunday, we had our last event together, the Her Village Championships. We got to play a soccer match with the girls.

The day was vibrant and filled with culture through a variety of stalls, Afghan food and live music. Although our team didn’t win the soccer match it was an unforgettable experience filled with joy and laughter.

There has been lots of work behind the scenes this year to boost our international partnerships and provide opportunities for the girls to explore the world beyond Pymble. We have included some images of current and prospective schools that we are optimistic about sending students to in 2025. We encourage our Year 9 students to apply for a position in the International Exchange program in 2025.

International Exchange Program 2025

Students are invited to apply for the 2025 International Exchange Program. It is open to students in Year 9, 2024 and students studying the language in Year 9/10.

Exchange programs provide a broad educational experience for students and increase international and cultural understanding among young people.   The experience will provide opportunities for selected students to travel internationally to live and study abroad, where they gain newfound cultural understanding as well as global perspectives. The program also involves reciprocal hosting whereby participating students, and their families host a visiting exchange student.

For further information on the International Exchange Program in 2025 (Cultural and Language) – click here.

Students wishing to be considered for this program must submit an application by the due dates (written or video).

Year 12 Information Night

It was so lovely to see so many of you in person on Thursday night for the Year 12 Information Night. For those who were unable to attend, we have made a recording of the presentations available below. It was also sent out via MyPymble this week.

Please do not hesitate to follow up with any of the presenters should you need further information. If you are not sure who to contact, your daughter’s Head of Year is a great place to start. They will be able to connect you with the right people related to your concerns.

Festival of Speech

Last week, Pymble students competed in the prestigious Festival of Speech across a range of disciplines. Our captain of Language Arts, Catherine, has provided the following report:

Last Friday and Saturday, students from Years 7 to 12 at Pymble Ladies’ College travelled to MLC School for the annual igsa Festival of Speech. This language arts competition brings together nearly 30 schools from Sydney and the ACT to compete in categories such as drama, debating, poetry, prose readings, current affairs and religious and ethical questions.

Over the past few weeks, our students have trained rigorously with their coaches in preparation. A full festival rehearsal last Wednesday helped refine their performances before the official competition kicked off on Friday. The air was filled with excitement and nerves as our representatives proudly competed for Pymble.

Pymble achieved an outstanding result, placing second overall, first in the junior category, and third in the senior category! We are incredibly proud of everyone who participated, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all the students, coaches and supporters. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at MLC and are already looking forward to next year’s festival!

Youth Ambassador – Sir David Martin Foundation, Supporting vulnerable young people

Year 12 student Ellie has been selected to sit on the Youth Advisory Group of the Sir David Martin Foundation. Please read below for further information from Ellie.

A year ago, I attended a fundraising event for the Sir David Martin Foundation, an incredible organisation that has been supporting vulnerable young people in crisis for over 33 years. At this event, I learned about the Youth Advisory Group, a diverse and passionate team of young individuals who bring their unique experiences to provide valuable insights and guidance to the Foundation’s executives and board.

Their work focuses on developing initiatives that can better support at-risk youth. Listening to the inspiring stories of resilience and the positive impact of the Foundation’s assistance deeply moved me. Motivated by what I heard, I expressed my interest in joining the Youth Advisory Group, and I feel truly honoured to have been selected as a member during the recent holidays.

Congratulations to Ellie for her advocacy of this vulnerable group of young people.

New Student Leader Workshop

We are excited to share that our recent Student Leaders Workshop was a resounding success. The girls had the incredible opportunity to hear from inspiring alumni about their own leadership journeys, which set the stage for a day of personal growth and exploration. Under the guidance of Dr Hadwen, they built their own understanding of their individual strengths and unique leadership styles.

Working alongside their staff mentors, they planned various initiatives while gaining valuable insights into program management, teamwork and goal setting. A heartfelt thank you goes to our staff mentors, Dr. Hadwen, alumni Samantha Guthrie and Viveca Tang, and especially to Mrs. Hunt, Head of Secondary Wellbeing, for organising and leading this wonderful day.

From the Boarding School

There was much excitement in the air as we welcomed 18 of our 2025 Year 7s to Pymble last Friday. It is always such fun to welcome new Boarders to our super-sized Boarding family and this first transition day was no exception. The morning started with a gathering in Avonmoore. This was an opportunity for the girls to meet their Boarding sisters and for them to meet us. Our prefects then introduced themselves and took our newest recruits off for Links Day in the day school. Meanwhile, our families had the opportunity to get to know each other and meet key staff before enjoying a presentation on getting ready for Boarding.

Boarders Get Baking was next on the agenda for our busy girls and this was followed by a delicious dinner and swim in the pool. With the girls happily ensconced in Avonmoore for the evening, our families headed off for a lovely dinner together. I am not sure who had more fun!

A Spooky Tuesday

Our beautiful Boarding houses were all set to scare, and it was lovely to have our youngest Pymble students visit for a healthy dose of trick or treating. Of course, our Boarders didn’t miss out either and we were incredibly grateful to one of our day school families who once again delivered a bounty of delicious treats for our Boarders. We are so grateful for the generosity of these families, and while the treats are delicious and dress ups are fun, it is the thoughtfulness, generosity and kindness of our wonderful day school family that has made our Halloween so special.

Live It, Love It, Learn It – Ms Theresa Mimmo, Deputy Director of Boarding

The Boarders had a great time in the pool on Friday night enjoying an “all-in” water polo game. On Saturday, we welcomed Year 7 and 8 Knox Boarders for some fun with trick or treat, and Addi and Ella along with some helpers did a fantastic job of organising and running the activities. Several Boarders were entertained with the Sydney Kings basketball match on Sunday. This week, Year 7 will enjoy a picnic, there is an adventure walk and a trip to Cabramatta to enjoy the delights it has to offer.

All Boarders have been working hard during the Learn It program, particularly with several assessments at this time of year. The academic staff will be here till the second last week of term so all Boarders are encouraged to continue to check in with them to refine their skills.

View From My Window

Hi, my name is Margaux. I’m 14 years old and come from the city of Hong Kong. I live in Cyberport which is known for its blend of nature and technology. It’s on the edge of the city with the ocean on one side and hills on the other.

I was born and raised in Hong Kong. My dad, Marcus, is a doctor, while my mum, May, is a businesswoman. Then there’s my younger sister, Marlene, who’s 11 and still in primary school, and our dog, Momo, a curious naughty Shiba Inu. We also have our auntie, she helps take care of things at home. She mainly helps Marlene but also looks out for me, because I am very forgetful.

When I look out my window, I can see the sea stretching out toward Lamma Island, with houses lining the shore and hills wrapping around the city. There’s always something on the water, from huge cargo ships gliding towards the port to small boats making their way across the harbour. But what I love the most is those few moments just before sunset, when the light reflects off the water and the glass buildings, turning everything a beautiful silver-golden colour. It’s like the whole city shimmers.

The buzz of city life is all around, with buses and trains carrying people to work or school early in the morning. On my balcony, Momo likes to poke her head through the railing, watching the people and boats go past. Sometimes, auntie takes her for a walk along the waterfront, and I watch as they disappear down the path, their figures slowly blending into the landscape.

Travelling from Australia to Hong Kong takes about 9 hours by plane, and while I’ve grown up in the fast-paced city, I’ve found a different rhythm at Pymble. I enjoy walking by the agriculture plot and seeing the farm animals, which is a very rare sight in Hong Kong’s bustling streets.

I miss the convenience of Hong Kong, where shops stay open until very late at night, and the huge variety of food. My favourite treats are shaved ice, spicy hot pot, and bubble tea. Boarding at Pymble has introduced me to a chaotic, family/friend-like atmosphere, and I love experiencing the different culture and people here.

I miss after-school adventures with my friends, taking the bus down to the Valley, walking together, eating, and chatting. However, I also enjoy the late-night talks with my roommates at Pymble. When I look out my window, I’m reminded of Hong Kong, but I also cherish the slower pace here. My favourite place is wherever my friends and family are; they bring me joy, whether we’re sharing a bowl of hot pot or enjoying sweet mango shaved ice on a hot day.

Boarder of the Week

Year 10 Boarder Summer joined us in Term 3 from Brisbane, Queensland and quickly became a much-loved, lively and friendly presence in Goodlet House. Summer can regularly be seen chatting happily to Boarders of all ages in the kitchen of an evening and she embraces all things Boarding.

She is an outstanding rower and manages to always keep a smile on her face despite the early starts and busy schedule. Her room is always immaculate, and she wears her uniform with pride. Summer is always ready to volunteer her time; most recently she was a welcoming and helpful presence with our 2025 Year 7s who were visiting and was instrumental in helping the Trick for Treat event be so successful.

Thank you, Summer, for your enthusiasm and many contributions to our Boarding family, you are a well deserving Boarder of the week!

Strength in Numbers

At the beginning of this term, our class of 2025 were inducted in as leaders across Pymble. In a very moving ceremony, Dr Hadwen called upon the Year 12s to encircle the entire school. For several moments, the auditorium went silent. The entire school was swept into the protection, care and leadership of the oldest students. In their induction as leaders of the school, our class of 2025 committed to being role models and representatives for the entire student body.

It reminded me of a scene in National Geographic. In North America mighty female bison travel together in herds. Especially, when predators like wolves and mountain lions come to pray on their young – the slower and more vulnerable of herd – the female bison encircle their young to form a multilayer circle of protection. The females form a ring around the young, and the males form an outer ring surrounding the females.

Their large, strong heads topped with horns and fast hooves often are enough of a deterrent to send predators elsewhere, although bison aren’t afraid to fight back if the predators decide to attack. These mighty females understand their role to create a safe space, an impenetrable guard, and strategic guide for the future generations.

In the Apostle Paul’s message to Titus, he exhorts the mature women of faith to gather around the younger women of faith. As they surround them, they are to set the example of faith, goodness, integrity and strength for the younger women. This he says, will not only encourage them but also protect them.

Such is the story of Mary and Elizabeth in the months leading up to the first Christmas. While Mary was pregnant, she visited her cousin Elizabeth who was also pregnant with John the Baptist (yes, Jesus and John the Baptist were cousins!).

The story in Luke’s Gospel recalls the way in which Elizabeth welcomed Mary into her home, to support her, creating space for her to grow. Elizabeth encouraged Mary to smile at the days to come, and most importantly, affirmed her future as the mother of the Saviour of the World. Indeed, the unborn John the Baptist leaped inside his mother Elizabeth’s tummy as Mary drew near, knowing that she carried the Chosen One.

The older woman linked to the younger woman is a powerful message for today. May we each remember that today is an opportunity to make an investment to pass something on by drawing near to protect and provide room for future generations to flourish.

Sports Awards Dinner 2024

On Friday 8 November, the College will honour the achievements of our talented sportswomen in Years 7 to 12 who have achieved great success and demonstrated outstanding commitment to their sports throughout 2024.

On the night, students who participate in competitive sports will be recognised through several awards which include Athlete of the Year, Para Athlete of the Year, All Rounder of the Year, Team of the Year (Saturday Sports), Representative Team of the Year, Strive for the Highest Awards, Sports Officials of the Year, Australian Representatives, and Sportswoman of the Year.

Students and teams are nominated for these awards by the sports co-ordinators and head coaches and are then finalised by a committee. The dinner will celebrate the achievements of our students and teams and give due regard to the College values which these awardees exemplify. Awards are a way to encourage good performance and instil competitive spirit. Sport at Pymble provides a platform for girls to be challenged, to achieve and grow and this awards dinner is designed to recognise those who compete at the highest level in their chosen disciplines.

Also, we acknowledge that not all girls who show excellence and commitment to their sport can be recognised at the awards evening – there are simply too many students who represent the College in sport. For those girls who are not receiving an award at the dinner, we recognise and acknowledge your contribution to Pymble and encourage you to continue to strive for your highest in your chosen sport.

I would also like to extend special thanks to our College Principal, Dr Hadwen, and the College Council for supporting our exceptional Sport program, and to all the parents/carers who support their daughters in their varied sporting pursuits.

Invitations have been sent to the families of award recipients, so please check your emails for the invitation and booking link and ensure you book your tickets before they close on Wednesday 30 October.

IPSHA Basketball – Round 2, Saturday 26 October

Round 3 IPSHA Basketball was filled with lots of energy, cheering and great basketball. All teams have shown significant improvement over the course of a few weeks in skills ranging from dribbling and shooting to passing and team communication.

Team of the Week: Pymble 9

On Saturday 26 October, Pymble 9 played Loreto 6. Our Pymble 9 players scored some amazing goals, with the first quarter score being 8 to 4. The second quarter was much better with players recognising that they needed to defend together as well as attack together, meaning a player was always defending the basket.

Due to some hard work from Alexandra Handley-Greaves (Year 5), Alana Waterhouse (Year 5) and Anaiya Patel (Year 5), our players managed to weave through the opposition to intercept and score a goal. In the second half, the main aim was to stay calm under pressure and this was shown through leadership from Dorothy Ban (Year 5) and Sooin Li (Year 5). The players worked together resulting in a nail-biting win of 18 to 14!

Congratulations to Pymble 9!

Are you interested in becoming a future green and gold athlete?

The Australian Sports Commission is running a National Talent Identification Program. They are looking for Australians aged 13+ who are keen to put their sporting skills to the ultimate test.

The Future Green and Gold campaign will be the nation’s greatest ever talent search, with a goal to find hidden sporting talent across the country. From rugby to para canoe there is more than 40 sports ready to welcome a new wave of athletes.

If you haven’t tried sport before, don’t worry – no sporting experience is required to take part. The talent search is designed to help guide you towards a sport you may be best suited to.

The opportunity is also open to current high performance athletes who are looking to transition into a different sport.

Future Green and Gold is a partnership between the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), the National Institute Network, national sporting organisations and Paralympics Australia. Some states have existing Talent Programs which this campaign will support.

  • Australian citizens or people who are eligible to become citizens

October Camps Wrap-up

In the recent school holidays, the Pymble Rowing Team attended the first October Rowing camps. Well done to all Pymble rowers completing the camp – a challenging week that all students handled well and got a lot out of. It was fantastic to see the crew bonding, camaraderie and sisterhood developing during the camp, including every student improving their rowing skills and physical fitness.

The Seniors and Inters travelled to Vision Valley to train on Berowra Creek for four and three days, respectively. In between some excellent training on the untapped pristine waters, the team bonded over the camp fire, cruised down water slides and ‘stacked some crates’!

On Wednesday 23 October, members of the Intermediate Squad (who are currently Vision Valley pioneers), extended their adventure to the pristine waters of Berowra Creek, completing an early-morning row in single sculls with Mr Schmidt and Mr Gray. The pioneers were also surprised to see Mr Gray the evening before at dinner! Well done to all and we will see you next week.

Junior and Learn-to-Row (LTR) Squads all travelled to the boatshed for day camp held over two days and were treated to some glassy water on Iron Cove. The extended time available allowed for in-depth technical progression, beam jump sessions and team bonding opportunities. Across both squads, huge kilometres were covered and training now sets up all teams very well for a successful Term 4. Well done to all Pymble rowers!

NSW High Performance Pathway Time Trial

Congratulations to Senior rowers, Summer Phillips (Year 10), Mika Naito (Current 2024 Year 11, 2025 Year 12), Millie Cullinane (Year 10) and Isabella Stalley (Current 2024 Year 11, 2025 Year 12) who, after 4 days of rowing camp, travelled to Nepean River (aka speed county) to race a 5km time trial against some of the best athletes in the state. The group competed in the Womens U19 single scull category, performing well. A special mention to Summer Philips coming in 5th out of 33 competitors that had entered in the category.

Australian Rowing Record Broken

Congratulations to Kelly Clifton (Year 9) who started the competition season early on Friday 25 October, setting two Australian Rowing Erg Records! Kelly challenged the 10,000m record first, setting a time of 45 minutes and 46.7 seconds, this is holding a split of 2:17.3. Kelly then challenged the 6000m, setting a record of 26 minutes and 38.4 seconds, this is holding a split of 2:13.2. Kelly’s courage, determination, planning and goal setting to take on this challenge and ultimately set these records is exciting to see – well done Kelly!

Tennis

Our igsa Tennis teams are off to a fantastic start this season, with strong performances across all divisions. After two rounds, our Senior Firsts, Junior Firsts, and Year 7 Firsts remain undefeated, showcasing impressive teamwork and determination on court. It’s exciting to see the players’ hard work paying off, and we look forward to building on this momentum in the upcoming matches.

Our Junior School athletes are also making us proud, with all four IPSHA tennis teams currently undefeated. These talented young players are demonstrating great sportsmanship and enthusiasm, setting a solid foundation for their future in tennis. Well done to all students involved – keep up the outstanding effort!

Senior Firsts report from our Volleyball Captain, Chloe Gu (Year 11)

Pymble 1 showed fierce determination in their game against Monte in week 2 of the Santa Sabina competition, winning the game with a close 1 to 0.

The first set started off strong, but our players were quickly affected by the sun. This caused the team’s skills to drop, only just taking the set 25 to 23. Shout out to Olivia Ayton (Year 10) and Vicky Hu (Current 2024 Year 11, 2025 Year 12), for consistently moving to the ball and trying their best to keep the ball up and in the game.

In the second set, Pymble was down by 15 to 12 with players hitting a slump. However, this was overcome as players brought the energy, cheered each other on, adjusted to the situation and played smart and safely. The second set ended with a tie of 23 to 23, and our Pymble team took the game 1 to 0. We hope to see improvement in the next few weeks.

Year 10 musicians

This week I would like to focus on the Year 10 cohort of musicians who have gone above and beyond in their preparations for music. Year 10 were given a study day on Friday 25 October and EVERY single musician showed up for a morning rehearsal, then again for an afternoon rehearsal. Joanna Au (Year 10) also gave her time to be at the Have a Go Expo during the day.

On the morning of their exams, our Year 10 students showed up on time to rehearse at 6.50am, with one reminding me that she wanted to “get her neurotransmitters firing in preparation for English and Science”. These students show such Resilience and know playing music helps prepare for their exams, whilst also being part of a very special, supportive community. Thank you to our Year 10 parents supporting these students in all they do – I am so grateful for their role modelling.

Secondary School Ensemble Concert

Apologies on the restructure of this event. Due to calendar clashes with students being absent, we felt that performing with only half an ensemble is not a true representation of what our musicians are capable of. For our musicians, we thought about the integrity of rehearsals and goals we have set: to perform. For this to happen, we need musicians, as well as an audience.

Throughout weeks 5 and 7, students will perform in the surrounds of our gorgeous College and entertain others during lunch time, with a Musical Buffet. Whilst this is not our preferred scenario, it enables us to remain true to our rehearsals and to provide a unique experience for both performers and audience. Times and dates will be published next week.

Farewell concert “Adios”

You are warmly invited to the Music Tour Farewell concert, which will take place at 4.30pm in the John Reid Hall (to be confirmed). Following the concert will be an information session from 6.00pm in the Jobson Lecture Theatre (Kate Mason Building). Please note this is the same date as the Dance Showcase and we are aware that some students will be involved in both dance and music.

Carols – Sunday 1 December from 5.00pm

Please save the date for this wonderful event, marking the end of an incredibly busy year. BYO picnic and sit on Gloucester Lawn whilst being serenaded by our wonderful Jazz musicians from the Junior and Secondary Schools. There may even be a visit from Santa Claus…

At 6.30pm, please join us for a Chapel Service with a musical feast of carols and lessons. Community Carols are made successful with the inclusion of our fabulous community. So, bring your picnics, your voices, and your Christmas Cheer!

A note about AMEB exams

Congratulations to the many students who have received their recent performance AMEB exams. To accompany the certificates above a certain grade, there is an expectation that students also complete a musicianship/theory exam.

The AMEB requirements are as follows:

Grade 6 Practical – requires a pass in Grade 2 Theory or Musicianship

Grade 7 Practical – requires a pass in Grade 3 Theory or Musicianship

Grade 8 Practical – requires a pass in Grade 4 Theory or Musicianship

Associate Diploma (A.Mus.A) – requires a pass in Grade 5 Theory or Musicianship

Pymble is very fortunate in that our tutors are all equipped to teach musicianship and theory, as well as knowing application rules around receiving an AMEB certificate. Taking part in an AMEB musicianship/theory exam takes time and a great deal of preparation and practice and the expectation for a teacher to have a student sit an exam within a term is not reasonable. If your daughter is planning to sit a practical AMEB exam, please be mindful of the musicianship/theory component and ask our tutors to work with you to ensure your daughter can achieve the highest possible grade.

Students in Years 7 and 8 have been working hard for months, putting in many extra hours to plan strategies, build their robots, program both autonomous and driver-controlled code, and practice driving their bots.

Team 65100K ‘Beluga’ (Penny Xing (Year 7), Jing Yuan Liu (Year 7), Athena Wu (Year 7), Arabella Hoang (Year 7) and Vivian Tian (Year 7)) attended the competition on Sunday 13 October. Students from this team handled the excitement and pressure of competition with determination and poise. Mentors were particularly impressed by their teamwork, and recognising and fixing errors, improving their performance. A highlight of the day happened during robot inspections, when some missing plates led the team to work quickly and creatively together to make replacement parts with equipment kindly loaned to them.

Six Pymble Robotics teams attended the VEX Tournament on Sunday 20 October:

65100A (Akshara Bhattacharya (Year 8), Shreya Mahendra (Year 8), Kayla Ma (Year 8))

65100B (Nicole Fan (Year 8), Alexa Wu (Year 8), Chloe Shao (Year 8), Bella Yang (Year 8))

65100G (Jessica Chen (Year 7), Aliya Singh (Year 7), Ula Cheng (Year 7), Hailey Judd (Year 7), Victoria Vaganov (Year 7), Summer Makan (Year 7))

65100M (Calla Zhu (Year 8), Jane Zhang (Year 8), Ava Christofides (Year 8), Zoe An (Year 7), Savenya Maganaarachchi (Year 8)

65100N (Lily Dao (Year 7), Ellie Lau (Year 7), Jessica Franklin (Year 7), Bella Xu (Year 7), Ella Su (Year 7), Esha Marwah (Year 7), Rose Bennett (Year 7))

65100R (Kathy Wang (Year 8), Lily Xing (Year 8), Joyce Li (Year 8), Erica Kwok (Year 8)).

All teams worked diligently and professionally throughout the day to optimise their robot performance and achieve their best. This involved repairing robots, strategising with other allied teams, and turning up promptly to a packed competition schedule. All teams at the event made it through to the quarter and semi-finals. In one match, three out of four teams versing each other were from Pymble Ladies’ College! Team 65100R won the Innovate Award presented at the competition after impressing the judges with design and implementation of their robot. Judges and organisers remarked that this event had the most encouraging and respectful atmospheres of the tournaments they had attended so far. Well done to Pymble students for contributing to the spirit of the competition! A huge thanks to parents for their ongoing support, transporting teams and robots to competitions – we couldn’t do it without you!

Thank you very much for your generous support of Garden Party 2024.

It was a beautiful day and like the sun, our Pymble spirit was out in full force! Special and heartfelt thanks go to our incredible parent and staff volunteers. Your hard work and commitment made this year’s event an incredible success. We know that we’ve beaten the amount that we raised for our charities last year and are looking forward to updating you on the total amount raised for the Barbara May Foundation and Sony Camp, once all the final figures are in.

Planning is already underway for Garden Party 2025, and we need your input!

To go in the draw to win one of four Gold Class movie vouchers for two people at Event Cinemas, we invite you to complete our Garden Party planning survey to help us create a bigger and better event in 2025. Please tell us what you liked, what you didn’t and how we can do things better. You can complete the survey by clicking here.

Please note that the survey will close on 28/11/2024. Winners of the movie vouchers will be drawn in the last week of Term 4 and will be notified by Community Engagement.
