From the Principal

From the Principal

Congratulations to our youngest students who celebrated a symbolic milestone this week – 100 days of Kindergarten. No doubt their parents and carers will appreciate the huge leaps and bounds their daughters have made in their learning and development since starting formal schooling at Pymble. Positively impacting on a child’s life is one of the unique joys of working in a school, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful Kindergarten teachers for the special care they take to instil the love of learning in our future graduates, who will be our Class of 2035!

On that note, a special shout-out to our Year 12 students who are one-third of the way through their Trial HSC exams, with two weeks left to go. Feedback from our girls is that they are feeling well-prepared and have not encountered any great surprises to date. I’m particularly proud of how our staff and students have worked together to ensure the best possible outcome for our Class of 2023.

Today’s column, however, is literally a TAS Fest, a celebration of our Technology and Applied Studies subjects, inspired by our inaugural TAS Fest event held in the GMCPA last Friday night.

It’s always exciting when an inaugural event is a huge success, especially when our students put their heart and soul into making it so. TAS Fest represented the first-time Pymble students and teachers of the different Technology and Applied Studies subjects have joined forces to present a combined showcase of learning. Guests viewed major works and creative projects by our Design & Technology and Textiles & Design students, while sampling food and drinks prepared and served by our Food Technology and Hospitality students. The evening culminated in our highly anticipated Textiles on Parade fashion show, which until this year was always a standalone event.

Our four Year 11 TAS Subject Captains, Stella Robertson (D&T), Manon O’Donnell (Hospitality), Arabella Sherlock (T&D) and Lucinda Woodfield (Food Tech) did an outstanding job working with their fellow students and staff to plan, promote and host the evening to an enthusiastic crowd of supporters. Thank you and great job, girls!

It’s no accident TAS at Pymble has grown in popularity and size in the last five years. Our two newest subjects, Design & Technology and Software Design & Development, cater to more than 150 students alone. TAS subjects are rich in opportunities for students to develop character, citizenship, collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking, which are the core competencies they will require in their future working lives. In addition, there are now more than 70 career pathways (that we know of) for TAS-based subjects and this number is rapidly growing due to the fast pace of technology innovation in the fields of design, hospitality, digital communications, and fashion.

Earlier in the year, our Deputy Principal Ms Rockwell and I seized the opportunity to take our Year 11 and 12 Textiles students to see the work of one of the world’s most famous designers, Alexander McQueen, at the National Gallery of Victoria. The intent of the tour was to inspire students and assist with their current studies while potentially nurturing future careers – for many of us, it was a highlight of the year.

Have I mentioned the cool tools and toys? Each of our TAS rooms and workshop spaces is fully stocked with equipment, and one of the Textiles rooms has a sublimator printer and heat press that allows students to print their graphic designs onto fabric. We also have a 1.2m x 1.2m overhead router in the workshop for cutting plywood and aluminium sheets to CAD profiles, so the opportunities for creativity and design are endless, as our TAS Subject Captains happily attest to.

Design and Technology has always been a creative outlet for me in which I’ve been able to push myself. I find that when I’m in the TAS rooms and the workshop there is no limit to what I can make, and I love to have a class where I can experiment and design freely. The TAS teachers are amazing people that make the subject worthwhile, each bringing a different aspect of learning to class to inspire and encourage everyone.”  Stella

Hospitality is a great subject to develop your understanding of food and beverage preparation, hygiene, safety, and working in a hospitality establishment as practicals reinforce the theory. It also allows students to collaborate in an exciting teamwork environment and experiment with a range of recipes and ingredients that are not always familiar. Students can achieve a CERT II in Hospitality: Food and Beverage, and an extensive skill set desired by many employers.” Manon

“As a Food Technology student, I appreciate the diverse learning it offers, including nutrition, the science behind food and cooking, and food presentation. Moreover, it allows us to work collaboratively in teams and unleash our creativity in the kitchen.” Lucinda

Textiles and Design is such a fulfilling and enjoyable way to express who we are and what inspires us, whilst being able to learn new sewing techniques and creative forms to communicate messages. You are constantly working with your teachers to develop the best ideas and learn techniques. I love how something drawn on paper or a visual created in your mind can be transformed into a physical object; this is a moment when you can feel so proud of yourself and how far you have come.” Arabella

Say hello to our HOLAs

Having learnt all about TAS and TAS Fest, I hope you now enjoy getting to know a little bit about Mr Peter Ellis, our Head of Learning Area – Technical and Applied Studies. Mr Ellis commenced at Pymble in 2018 to lead the department that teaches Design and Technology, Food Technology, and Textiles and Design (Stages 5 and 6); Hospitality, and Software Design and Development (Stage 6); and Technology Mandatory (Stage 4). He currently teaches Years 11 and 12 Design and Technology students as well as a Year 12 Compass Group.

Peter, what was the ‘aha’ moment that led you into teaching?

“I was fortunate to work with Bob Britton who has a car and race car building career that stretches over 56 years and includes component repair, redesign and replacement. He mentioned that his knowledge and skills were not documented or transferred to others. He passed them on to me and I saw an opportunity to continue the legacy of knowledge and skills sharing in teaching.

What is the most rewarding aspect of the work you do here?

“I have unlimited freedom to be creative with my classes and within all TAS subjects. All students drive creativity with their passion and varying project ideas.”

What are you most proud of achieving as a Pymble HOLA?

“I am most proud of leading a strong team of passionate, dedicated and driven TAS staff members who have extensive industry experience that provides our students with richer learning opportunities linked to real world contexts.”

Work aside, tell us a fun fact about you…

“I aim to complete three hours of physical exercise each weekday and more on the weekends. I cycle to the College and home each day and by the end of this year I would have ridden the equivalent of one lap around Australia since starting at Pymble in 2018.”

Finish this sentence: If I could impart one life lesson to our students, it would be…

“Find joy in what you do and the times that you share with each other and your family.”

Well said, Mr Ellis, and thank you to Stella, Manon, Arabella and Lucinda for being such wonderful champions of TAS at Pymble. As for our students who are looking ahead to subject choices for Stages 5 and 6, I hope this inspires you to channel your unique gifts and talents, as well as your creativity, in a way that brings joy to you.

My school – a reflection on our school and the learning day by our girls

Last Friday, I was lucky enough to spend time with some of our Year 6 girls at Bowden Brae Aged Care home and whilst I was there, I had a heartfelt chat with Mrs Rosalie Ramsay, former Head of Junior School at Pymble Ladies’ College from 1973 to mid 2002, serving 36 years working at Pymble. Rosalie shared her memories and her wisdom as a former Head of School. What stuck with me was Rosalie’s explanation of her highlight as Head of our Junior School:

My highlight was most definitely watching the girls celebrate their learning. I loved it when I could see the girls’ interest spark, when they knew they had learnt something new by themselves or had a new experience.

Each day our girls are learning who they are, what interests them, what matters to them and how they learn. Our girls don’t learn through text books, tests or worksheets. They learn through experiences, through owning their own learning and challenging their thinking and deepening their understanding.

This week I wanted to hand over the newsletter to some of our girls across the Junior School so you could hear from them what life as a Pymble Junior School girl feels like from their perspective:

Kindergarten:

I love that when I read a book it makes me imagine I am in that book. I love our school because it’s kind. I am kind to other people when they are upset – Lily O’Neill

I love Art, drawing cards and being helpful and kind to my friends at school and my family. I also love reading my Moana book – Zanetor Nanewortor

I like to learn and I love learning digraphs. I also love playing my violin and building with Lego – Stella Shen

I love Art and drawing unicorns. I also love playing my little piano and my harmonica – Bronte Boulos

Year 1:

I love creating new things that I haven’t even done before. For example, I tried my best recently to draw a realistic horse as I love horses. I also love writing because I learn new words and then try to use them in my stories – Alice Han

I love doing speeches and I’m excited as we got to choose our own topic. I am going to speak about ‘when I grow up’ and I will talk about my hope to become a scientist in Antarctica – Kitty Mae Ruiz del Portal Greene

Year 2:

I love Science because I got to choose to do a project about a famous scientist. I chose Jane Goodall because she’s a woman and she discovered so much in the wild. In the past lots of women have not been recognised so I wanted to choose a woman. – Li-Ya Koo

I also love Science and have chosen to research two astronomers because they wanted to teach everyone about the importance of all planets not just Earth and no one would listen to them. I have also learnt about the significance of the sun as without its energy there would be no life on Earth. – Claire Huang

Year 6: Glenworth Valley

I loved Outdoor Ed. For me, I didn’t really feel homesick because I knew it wasn’t forever! My favourite activity was abseiling. I loved it because there was a risk involved and I was facing my fears. I did the 12m cliff and the 20m cliff. The 20m cliff was my favourite because you had to walk down the cliff before you could abseil. You were connected to a single rope while walking down, then we got connected to other ropes and belayed ourselves down. It involved a lot of self-trust but was completely safe. I love Outdoor Ed so much. It is so much fun. – Aaliyah Khanche

I enjoyed my learning experience at camp immensely, but my all-time favourite activities were definitely horse riding, kayaking, abseiling and bushwalking. I had an awesome time with my friends in my group and the horses. – Madeleine Birrell

What makes a Pymble girl?

I asked girls across the Junior School to describe what makes them a Pymble girl and asked them to finish this statement ‘I am…’ and here are some of their thoughts:

I am brave because I try things even when I’m scared.

I am funny, I make other people laugh.

I am kind and inspiring.

I am talkative and will talk to anyone. I love to talk a lot!

I am not always right about things and that’s ok.

I am creative.

I am a scientist.

I am willing to challenge myself and do really hard stuff.

I am looking for new ways to do things.

I am determined and will keep on trying when I don’t know something. When I get stuck, I think, think, think and then try again.

I am kind to myself and kind to others.

This week’s Kindness message from Semester 2 Kindness Captains, Amna and Jessamy (Year 6)

Kindness thought for the week: To give an act of kindness costs nothing, but to the receiver it’s worth everything in the world.

100 Days of Kindergarten

On Wednesday, 2 August our fabulous Kindergarten girls celebrated 100 Days of Kindergarten. During the first 100 days of learning at Pymble, the girls have learnt about living things, cared for ducklings, investigated push and pull forces, materials and life in the past.  In both English and Mathematics, the girls have been developing strong foundational skills, becoming readers, writers and mathematicians. Well done girls!  We are very proud of you and can’t wait to see where the next 100 days of your learning adventure takes you.

“You’re off to great places!

Today is your day!

Your mountain is waiting,

So….. get on your way

~ Dr Seuss

NAPLAN

We are very proud of our girls’ performance in NAPLAN.  NAPLAN Reports have been mailed to parents and you should receive your daughter’s report this week.

Both Year 3 and Year 5, achieved wonderful academic results:

We had many students who received “exceeding” across all tests which is a phenomenal result. As a school, we don’t ‘teach to the test’ and the format of the tests is different to the way we teach or assess our girls, so our girls have performed exceedingly well. For our Year 3 girls this is the first time they have sat a formal exam and it is scary, so we honour them all. We are proud of the wonderful achievement in our results as the girls completed these tests at the beginning of the year, when they were just settling into their new grade and they showed maturity and responsibility for their learning.

“The more that you read

the more things you will know.

The more that you learn,

the more places you’ll go.

~ Dr Seuss

We are also proud of their performance on the day.  Our Year 5 girls were awarded 1st in Art and Poetry, 3rd in English, 2nd in Legacy. Year 5 placed 3rd overall in the competition.

Congratulations to Selina Jiang (Year 6) who entered the Kid News Short Story Competition and received Highly Commended for her story “A desolate world” and to Lily Zhang (Year 5) for having her work published in the “Oz Kids in Print” Magazine, her work “Seasons” is now eligible for the 2023 Young Australian Writer’s Awards. Lily was awarded writing excellence. Well done girls, we are very proud of you for having a go!

Welcoming our new Assistant Chaplains

We are very privileged to have Mrs Edwina O’Brien and Pastor Michaela Antill-Cassie join us as Assistant Chaplains. They delighted the girls in Chapel this week with beautiful[ND1]  singing and guitar playing. We are indeed blessed to have these role models who lead our girls in their faith each week, under the guidance of our wonderful Reverend Bent.

Keeping safe in carlines

We would like to remind all parents to please be vigilant during pick up and drop off times. We ask you to take particular note of the following – (we have used teacher vehicles for the purpose of dramatisation)

  1. During drop off in the morning please do not use the teacher carpark as a road. This is very dangerous. I am worried that one of our staff could be injured. We know that parents driving through this area use this to push in line to get out the College quicker, this is not allowed.

2. When collecting your daughter from flagpole in the afternoons please do not double park. This is very dangerous as it means your daughters have to cross the road to get to your cars and could be seriously injured in the process. Please wait in 1 line as you do for pick up.

3. Please do not park in the No Parking zones outside the GMCPA. This area must remain clear for vehicles to pass by and ensure safety to our students when moving to flagpole and other locations.

4. if you are waiting for your daughter to arrive at flagpole, please wait in the lined area around the oval (see photo). Cars at flagpole should be loading or unloading only.

We thank you for your co-operation to allow us to keep our girls, staff, and parents safe.

Happy Box Update

Many of our Middle School girls are continuing to actively contribute to the Happy Box Project service initiative that provides remote Indigenous girls with items they may not easily get access to. Alongside the sanitary items requested, we have crafted a variety of handmade gifts to send: fabric scrunchies, origami paper cranes, felt animals to name just a few. We are asking the girls who have committed to this project to please bring in the sanitary items in a plastic bag with their names clearly marked by tomorrow Friday 4 August. Our intention is to continue crafting on Wednesdays and Fridays across the term, culminating in packing the Happy Boxes into beautifully designed and printed calico bags for delivery over the next term break. We are encouraging the girls to log their Service hours and are signing off on many student record sheets each week. Great work girls!

It is never too late to get involved!! We would like to be able to send as many Happy Boxes as possible so please encourage your daughters to join the craft sessions and as importantly, to drop off any sanitary items to the Middle School office as soon as possible (all late items will be graciously accepted). We would love all our Middle School families to be involved.

Below, is a list of suggested items and a link to the organisation for your further information. Sanitary items: period pants, pads, tampons, roll on deodorant, sheet-face masks, soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, face cleanser, moisturiser, hand sanitiser, shower gel, face washer and heat packs.

Congratulations to Isis Li (Year 8) whose essay has been shortlisted for the Junior Category of the John Locke Institute 2023 Global Essay Prize. Isis has now been invited to Oxford for the awards ceremony, at which the winners will be announced

The MMG Survey was completed by our Year 7 and Year 8 students this week. Parents would have received via a Portal notification, information about the MMG Wellbeing Surveys which parents have also been encouraged to complete via the Portal.

On Thursday 3 March, Year 8 students attended a workshop run by guest presenter Michelle Chevalley Hedge. Michelle is a nutritionist and sleep expert, who shared information to help the girls consolidate their wellbeing. Please encourage your daughters to share their insights with you. Year 7 will hear from Michelle on Thursday 24 August.

This week we launched the Transition Leadership positions with our Year 7 cohort during Year assembly on Tuesday. This is an opportunity for the girls to work with our Year 6 Junior School students on a program to assist with their transition to high school. We are asking the girls to write a letter of application to be considered for this position of responsibility and to submit here. More information regarding this role and other formal leadership positions is available on the Leadership Website. In Term 3 we will be launching the full suite of leadership positions for 2024 and would like to encourage all girls to consider applying.

Our First Nations students held a bake sale during our NAIDOC Week celebrations. They raised over $500. All proceeds are going to support sporting groups with indigenous students.

Our Da Vinci Decathalon State Championship winners were presented with their certificates during assembly. They will be presented with their winning medals during the school combined assembly.

Year 8 Forensics Excursion – Student Reflections

On Monday Year 8 took part in a problem solving forensics activity hosted by Education Interactive. We were given a crime scene photo and information about the mystery murder. Including the 4 possible suspects. The drug dealer, the couple and the accused. We used clues from evidence stations set up in the room including DNA, ballistics, arson, tyre tracks and more. From these clues we gathered information and solved the murder.

We had to use our minds to uncover the motives of the different peoples’ actions, because the clues didn’t tell us. This activity was a fun and interesting way to learn some of the ways people use science in the real world. Some of us solved the crime and others didn’t. Josh, the leader of the activity, was very helpful and taught us how to do beginner forensic science. We got to bond with other classes while having fun solving a mystery. We would love to take part in another activity like this as it was a fun and interesting way to learn.

From the Upper School

From the Upper School

A message from Mr. Riley, Head of Upper School

It has been another action-packed week in the Upper School with Year 10 volunteers helping to run the St Edmund’s Athletics Carnival, Dr Andrew Browning from the Barbara May Foundation inspiring our girls in Chapel with his life of service, our Da Vinci Superstars showcasing their talents at Knox Grammar School, the Model UN filling the Senior School with students, laughter and debate, and our girls heading to Shore for a newly established focus group.

Elsewhere our exchange girls continue to enjoy Sydney and the beautiful weather we are experiencing, and we also had a visitor (Flavia) from Romania, who loved her time at Pymble.

This year we are working with our girls to develop more opportunities to build connection and understanding with young men at other schools in Sydney. Our joint Residential Program with Riverview provided an excellent opportunity for Year 10 to develop healthy and respectful relationships, and we have recently engaged in focus groups with Knox and Shore to ideate more opportunities for late 2023 and into 2024.

Please enjoy Mika Naito’s beautiful reflection on Dr Andrew Browning’s talk in chapel:

Listening to Dr Andrew Browning’s talk was an absolutely incredible experience. As an Obstetrician and Gynecologist working in some of the most remote areas of Africa, he shared his journey as one of the first senior fistula surgeons in the world. His dedication and passion for helping women in less fortunate situations left a profound impact on not just me but many of the girls in my cohort. Dr Browning’s honesty and openness about the struggles faced by these women truly shocked us. It confirmed once again how fortunate we are to live in Sydney and attend such an amazing school. One of the most inspiring aspects of his talk was when he emphasised that even as 15/16-year-old girls living in Sydney, we can contribute significantly by spreading awareness or donating to the Barbra May Foundation. It reminded us that no matter our age or background, we all have the power to create positive change in the world. Dr Browning is a truly remarkable and inspiring individual. His dedication to his work and his genuine concern for the well-being of others left a lasting impact on all of us. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to listen to him speak and to be reminded of the importance of making a difference, no matter how big or small.

Lastly, I have received numerous applications for work experience in Year 10 and encourage all of our families to consider this as an option for your girls. It is a wonderful way for our students to see what the world of work looks like, to collaborate with adults, and to begin to think about their future pathways. Please do visit the Futures section of the newsletter for a simple ‘how to’ flowchart, and enjoy Erin Porter’s reflections from her time at SBS:

During my week of work experience at SBS, I was lucky enough to experience the fast-paced environment of the news and media industry. I had the chance to explore all of the different jobs within SBS, such as marketing, production, sales and language translation. I found it so interesting to learn about all of the teamwork and time it takes to form a single news segment.

I took part in multiple different activities such as watching the live filming of the news, recording a radio ad, practising reading news scripts and going behind the scenes in the busy production studio. The camera crews took me along to a range of filming locations such as the city and Bondi, where I was able to watch them interview and film reporters.

I learnt so much about the SBS brand and the media industry – I really enjoyed this week and I am very grateful for this opportunity that I hope I will get to pursue into the future!

As we headed into Week 3, the Year 12 students sat their first HSC Trial examination – English (Paper 1) on Monday. All students are to be congratulated on their calm and sensible approach, which has continued throughout the week.  After the first examination, the girls had a special surprise on Marden Lawn – some home baked cupcakes from Dr Hadwen and Mr Bell! It was a lovely opportunity to enjoy a sweet treat, take in the sun and chat to see how everyone felt.

I would like to offer my sincere thanks to our Year 11 students, whose routines have been a little disrupted during these examinations. The Year 11s have been respectfully quiet and following a different procedure, as well as offering their care and support to their older ‘sisters’ in Year 12. The Year 11s also have constructed a beautiful heart shaped collage of positive thoughts and best wishes for the Year 12s.

TASFest

Congratulations to all students and staff who were involved in TASFest last Friday evening. What an outstanding night of great food and drinks (the marshmallows in the hot chocolate were amazing!), clever designs and dazzling fashion. Special mention to Arabella, who hosted the evening with poise and confidence. It was so clear how much effort had gone into making this such a success and the girls certainly shone in their respective roles.

Year 5 / 11 Buddy program

Last week our Year 11 students reconnected with their Year 5 buddies for some more fun. It is wonderful to see the positive role models they are providing, as they engage with their younger peers. Positive peer pressure and strong connections to community are the most effective ways to build a sense of belonging and a stronger sense of self-worth, for both our Year 5 and Year 11 students. I am really enjoying hearing some of the great stories the older girls are sharing with me about their conversations and experiences in this program.

Pymble-Knox Connections

Year 11 students enjoyed a fun night of Trivia at Knox on Tuesday night, in our most recent gathering of the Pymble-Knox Connections group. It is lovely to see some genuine friendships being built and a some tremendous fun and talent on display.

GAP Program 2024

Year 11 students are reminded that there is a special GAP presentation for those students interested in learning more about the program. This will be presented by Ms Rockwell next Monday 7 at lunch in the JLT.

Year 11 Business Studies – Rhodes Waterside Shopping Centre

Last week, the 88 Year 11 students who make up the Business Studies cohort visited Rhodes Waterside Shopping Centre to investigate the way in which successful global businesses operate and the marketing, finance, human resource and operations strategies they have adopted.

After travelling to the centre, and a brief of our mission and intentions for the day from Mr Howells, we were given total independence to explore the competitive advantage Kmart, Ikea, Aldi and Coles possess. Whether we were comparing prices, assessing where different businesses were in the business cycle, investigating different market tactics and strategies to draw in and sustain customers or grabbing some sushi between customer interviews, the day was a success. Not only did we see businesses in action for ourselves and being able to apply the theory we we’ve learnt to real life practice, and a fun day and allowed us to be self-motivated in our business inquiry.

Everyone walked away with an extended understanding of the nature of business and business functions and a deepened understanding of how customers interact with those businesses after interviewing consumers within the stores, it was a great way to step out of our comfort zones! Following on from the trip, we will apply our findings and data collection to a business report back in the classroom.

From the Boarding School

It is no surprise that our Year 12 Boarders have taken the challenge of the HSC Trial Examinations in their stride. They have worked hard all year and are justifiably confident that they are well prepared to show what they know about each of their subjects. There is certainly a big fan club cheering them on here in Boarding and it is lovely to know that our extended family of Pymble and Gordon Uniting Church also hold them in their prayers. Our Year 12s were delighted with the delivery of high tea treats on Sunday afternoon from the local congregation. We look forward to welcoming the community to our War Memorial Chapel on Sunday 13 August for a celebratory service.

Boarders’ Parent Group meeting

It was great to catch up with our Boarder parents last Thursday night. The minutes will be emailed to Boarding families in the coming days. Please make a special note of our next meeting which will be held on site on Friday 15 September, prior to the Boarding family community event and on the eve of the Garden Party.

Our Football Superstar

This week we bid a brief farewell to resident football superstar, Althea (Lethy) Levy who is heading off to play for Football NSW at the HiFA Peace Memorial 2023 International Tournament in Japan. She was very excited to receive her playing shirt on the weekend and we wish her well for a fabulous tournament.

Love It – Kate Inglis (Acting Deputy Director of Boarding)

Last weekend was an action-packed one for our talented Boarders! They were on the move, participating in various exciting events and showcasing their remarkable skills.

Friday – TAS Fest and Knox Senior Social

Friday evening was a blast at the TAS Fest! Our Boarding students were busy baking, displaying projects, and even strutting their stuff on the catwalk! Staff and Boarding sisters were thrilled to attend, and they were blown away by the incredible talents of our TAS girls! Meanwhile, our Goodlet Boarders had a great time at the Knox Senior Social. Dressed in fun and stylish outfits, the girls enjoyed a fabulous evening of dancing, singing, and making new friends.

Saturday – Barbie Movie and Newington Dinner

On Saturday morning, our Boarders showed their dedication and commitment to sports with many participating in both netball/hockey and rugby. We applaud their enthusiasm and sportsmanship!

In the evening, the excitement continued with a Barbie Party at Hornsby Odeon Theatre for Years 7-9 and 11. All dressed in pink, the girls relished the highly anticipated movie of the moment! Back on campus, our Year 10 Boarders enjoyed a memorable Formal Dinner with Newington. The evening began with mocktails on arrival and continued with a delightful 3-course etiquette dinner. It was wonder to witness the lessons taught by our very own etiquette expert, Carolyn Burgess, on full display in the dining hall!

Sunday – High Tea at Pymble Uniting Church and Knox-Pymble Junior Social

Sunday morning brought more wonderful experiences. Twelve of our Boarders walked up to Pymble Uniting Church for the ‘High Tea with a Twist’ event. They proudly represented Pymble and engaged with members of the community, including many Pymble Alumni.

Meanwhile, our youngest Boarders had a fun-filled time at Chatswood during their junior social with Knox. Year 7 & 8 students were eager to showcase their fabulous bowling skills, resulting in many strikes and endless laughter.

We are proud of our Boarding students for making the most of their weekends and embracing the ‘Love It’ Program.

View From My Window

My name is Hannah Carmichael, I am 15 years old, and I come from Forster, on the beautiful mid-north coast of NSW. I started as a Boarder at the College in 2022 when I was in Year 9.

When at home I live with my mum (Julie), dad (Lachie), 12-year-old brother (Hamish) and my extremely cute and fluffy labradoodle, Paddy, in a beautiful house on the iconic One Mile Beach at Forster. For those of you who know the area, that’s the beach with the large sand dune at the North end.

My mum works as a high school teacher at one of the local schools in Taree and my dad is a helicopter pilot in Western Australia where he flies offshore to oil and gas rigs. My dad is a FIFO (fly in fly out) – he works two weeks away in Karratha and then has two weeks at home.

Forster is an amazing place to live. It is a very popular tourist location where lots of people come for holidays. It is popular all year round because of the amazing beaches and lakes and the whale watching in winter.

It is not only the view from my window that makes it special, but also the noise of the waves crashing on the sand in front of our house and the smell of the salt air. Through the trees in front of my window I can see glimpses of the ocean and the surf gently rolling onto the shore.

My favourite times of day on the beach are sunrise and sunset. At the start of the day the beach is full of people walking their dogs and exercising and enjoying the beautiful sunrise. At the other end of the day, the waves are packed with surfers enjoying the last few rolling waves of the day.  This is my favourite time of day to surf – just as the sun is setting and the sky changes colour from blue to pink to orange.

Dolphins are frequent visitors to the beach. Sometimes if you are surfing you can get close enough to touch them. And in winter they are joined by migrating whales, jumping around, breaching, and slapping their tails with their calves.

My favourite thing about being at home is spending time on the beach. Every afternoon I like to go down to watch the sunset with my dog Paddy. I particularly love the long summer holidays as the weather is amazing and the days are long and warm. I like to sunbake on the beach or around my pool with my collection of bikinis and tanning oils.

When I go back to Boarding after the holidays I really the miss my family (especially my dog), the beach and the smell of the salt air. But I am always happy to go back to see my boarding and day-girl friends.

Boarder of the Week

Congratulations to Boa Kim of Year 10 who is our well deserving Boarder of the week. Boa joined us last year from South Korea and her kind, gentle manner quickly won her the respect and admiration of others. She is diligent, considered and is always willing to assist staff or her peers. Boa is a talented artist and enjoys spending her downtime in our music rooms with her Boarding sisters. Boa is caring and supportive of our younger Boarders, by visiting Marden House, escorting Boarders on leave, or enjoying activities around campus. Boa’s smile and friendly nature never fails to lift the spirits of her peers.

Head of Boarding

From the Chaplains

From the Chaplains

Hello! My name is Pastor Michaela Antill-Cassie, and I am excited to have joined the Chaplaincy team here at Pymble Ladies’ College. My first encounter with Pymble was in 1992. I was a student at St Luke’s College, an Anglican School situated on the Northern Beaches, and I have vivid memories of travelling to the Pymble campus to play in netball competitions on the weekends. I even have a photograph of myself holding a 1st ribbon on the courts, I assume St Luke’s must have been victorious on that occasion.

Since then, I graduated high school and completed a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education at Macquarie University. After working in childcare for several years I became involved with an organisation called Youth With A Mission, an interdenominational Christian training organisation, where I completed a Discipleship Training School and a three-month mission in Africa. During my time with YWAM, I discovered a strong sense of call to work for the Church and to encourage/support young people in their lives and walk with God – a call that I believe is still a big part of my life today. On returning to Australia, I took a part-time position as a Children’s Worker at a local Anglican Church and continued to search for a place to worship and call home. Throughout my life, I have been involved in numerous denominations, including Anglican, Baptist, C3, Hillsong and Uniting and have come to appreciate their different strengths and weaknesses. I have also had the opportunity to learn from other faith traditions and to experience the value and richness of such diversity.

In 2008, I extended my ministry experience from children into youth ministry and took on the role of Youth Worker at Roseville Uniting Church. As time went by, the youth grew up (as young people tend to do), and I stepped into the role of Youth and Young Adult Pastor. During my time at Roseville (15 years), I have been involved in Friday night youth groups, Sunday church services, camps, bible studies, mentoring programs, scripture teaching, lunch and after-school groups. And again, as part of this role, I found myself back at Pymble running the Ignite lunchtime group (of which there was only one, now there are three!) and as a guest speaker at a Boarders’ chapel service and facilitator of a Christian leadership camp. All of which have led me to where I am today.

Last year, I decided to formally pursue my call to ordained ministry and was accepted into the Uniting Church candidating program to become a Minister Of the Word. This process, which takes place over three years, involves academic study, weekly formation classes and field education. To participate more fully in the school, my family and I (which includes my spouse, 1-year-old son, dog and cat) have moved to the area and are enjoying exploring our new leafy surroundings. As I mentioned previously, I am excited to be back at Pymble after all these years. I am excited to be part of a Uniting Church School which proudly states that Christian faith is a core element of its identity and one where all students, from Kindergarten to Year 12 are encouraged to explore and express their spirituality in a manner appropriate to their age, understanding and their own culture and faith backgrounds. And ultimately, I am excited to watch Pymble change the world.

Blessings and Peace.

Cybersecurity Work Experience at TCS

Eight students from Year 10 and 11 have participated in a three-day work experience program hosted by TATA Consultancy Services this week.

Isabelle (Year 10) has shared her experience below:

This week, students from Year 10-11 attended the cybersecurity work experience course at TATA Consultancy. We learnt about the different types of cyber attacks and cryptography, as well as the process of a network intrusion. To apply our newfound knowledge, we participated in a hackathon where we completed various tasks to investigate the hidden functions of a webpage. It was a very engaging and informative course, and I would highly recommend it for students who wish to explore cybersecurity in the future.

One of the pleasures of this week was to attend, albeit briefly last Saturday, The PMUN training weekend held at Pymble which was ably led by the fabulous Mrs Bronwyn Hubbard. It was inspiring and galvanising to witness students in United Nations style contexts of proposal and debate of international scenarios from 22 schools including representatives from Abbotsleigh, James Ruse, Ravenswood, Barker, Knox and many schools located over Sydney and NSW rural areas. Well done to the Pymble students who were worthy representatives of their school in hosting this prestigious event.

Was also bowled over by the ongoing success of the Co-curricular Drama teams at the Ryde Eisteddfod. Surely a testament to not only the undoubted talents of the students but also the dedicated and expert leadership of Sarah Boyd as their co-ordinator.

I also had the opportunity to witness an ongoing rehearsal for King of the Polar Bears presented by Pymble Dance’s RAD ballet stream. A tantalising glimpse of what will be a magical performance. Please see below for booking details. A shout out to the Junior Lyrical and Jazz teams for their eisteddfod successes as well at the Opera House.

The range of the achievements of Music students in both Co-curricular and Curriculum areas of Music is a weekly wonder. I shake my head in admiration at the scope and integrity of their contributions. Please see the list of exciting events for Term 3 in Mrs Turner’s Music section and some advice concerning private music lessons.

In celebrating the outstanding success of Pymble students in this year’s Da Vinci Competition so brilliantly led by Mrs Debbie Tarrant, I wanted to acknowledge the achievements of the following  Pymble students in the Creative Producers section.

The Year 8 team placed third in Creative Producers out of 81 teams.

The students involved were Sitian Chen, Emily Chiang, Sophie Guo, Jenny He, Emily Huang, Karen Kim, Angela Tao and Chloe Wang.

It was a pleasure to work with some of these girls in their skills training sessions.

Congratulations to IPSHA Touch Football Pymble 5 (Year 4) who competed against Ravenswood and emerged victorious with a narrow 4 to 3 win. The game was an intense display of skill, determination, and teamwork. Pymble 5 showcased their exceptional offensive capabilities, manoeuvring swiftly past Ravenswood’s defence to score crucial points. In the second half, Ravenswood fought back, creating several opportunities, and managing to fight their way back and score a couple of late tries. Rugby Sevens

Saturday marked the beginning of the Rugby Sevens season! Our players were very excited after training in Term 2 to take the field in Round 1 of the Chloe Dalton Competition. There were some very promising results and it was great to see some Pymble students play their first ever match of Rugby Sevens.

A huge shout out to Meredith Reynolds (Year 11), Georgie Purcell (Year 11) and Hannah Weber (Year 10) playing multiple games for Senior Pymble 2 who were short on numbers on the day. An amazing effort from our Pymble Rugby players.

Sydney Eisteddfod

On Sunday, our Junior Eisteddfod dancers competed at Sydney Eisteddfod at the iconic Sydney Opera House. The weather blessed us with a perfect, sunny day, and we are absolutely delighted to share the outstanding success the girls had on the day.

The dancers showcased not only their exceptional skills but also represented the college with immense pride and talent.

We are thrilled to announce their remarkable achievements: a sensational First place for Junior Lyrical and a fantastic third place for Junior Jazz.

Being a part of this extraordinary event was an immense honour and the girls expressed their excitement and deep gratitude for the opportunity to dance in such a spectacular venue in front of thousands of audience members. Our groups even ended up having spontaneous audiences on the outdoors Opera House forecourt as they warmed up and rehearsed.

Thank you to all who attended and for your unwavering support.

Our Juniors are now eagerly preparing for their very last competition of the Eisteddfod season: The Hills Dance Spectacular on 27 August. After this, their next performance will be in our very own Dance Showcase in November.

Music

Music

Once again, we have the great joy in celebrating our uber-talented young ladies.

Our Year 12 Music 1, 2 and Extension cohort performed over two days as part of their trial HSC examinations. Mr Stafford, Mrs Colbey and I had the great pleasure of being spectators for this event, rather than marking the girls. It is times like these that we are humbled by the girls’ talents and attitude towards their studies. Congratulations to all who performed, along with each private tutor, who prepared the students. Particular thanks goes to Estella Roche, our College accompanist. Estella mastered every genre of music to accompany the girls, giving up hours of time to practise and work with the students to ensure they had polished performances.

Aine Oo is one of our year 10 clarinet students who had some remarkable success over the holidays:

At the Band Association of NSW Solo and Party championships held at Barker College, Aine won the U19 Clarinet section and placed second in the Open Clarinet section.

Aine also entered 3 events at the Sydney Eisteddfod where she placed Second in the clarinet U15 section and was Highly Commended in the hugely competitive Open Age Woodwind Concerto Competition.

Worth noting is that she also entered the Clarinet U20 section but was very unfortunately disqualified for being 20 seconds over the time limit. However, Aine has accepted the decision with impressive grace and has learned from this experience that boundaries are set for a reason.

It is a busy term in Music this term. Please note the following confirmed information and make note in your diaries.

Private Music Lessons

Private music lessons are offered at the College for brass, woodwind, strings, piano, percussion, musicianship, and voice. All our private music tutors are professional musicians, performers, and teachers, having spent many years perfecting their craft as a musician. As with any other degree and qualification, a fee is charged and is expected to be paid. In recent months I have been informed of fees not being paid in a timely manner, or not at all. We completely understand rising interest rates and the pressures on families, and I ask that you remind yourselves that our tutors are in the same situation with families and living expenses and respect these valued staff members. All tuition must be paid according to the invoice delivered by the tutor – all tutors have their own terms and agreements. I respectfully draw your attention to the handbook regarding missed lessons. This is something all parents and tutors must adhere to, as a business arrangement has been made.

  • NOTICE IN WRITING OF TERMINATION OF MUSIC TUITION MUST BE GIVEN TO THE PRIVATE TEACHER BY THE BEGINNING OF THE SECOND LAST WEEK OF EACH TERM.  If no notice is received, the following term’s fees will be payable even if the student does not attend any lessons.   It will be assumed that a student is continuing lessons unless such notice is given.

Student enrolments will be automatically rolled over into the following year unless appropriate notice is given. For students not continuing into the following year, notification needs to be given NO LATER THAN 2 WEEKS BEFORE DAY 1 TERM.

  • If payment has not been received within fourteen days of the invoice being issued, lessons may be suspended until payment has been received. Lessons lost due to suspension will be forfeited.
  • An additional fee for late payment of invoices may be applied at the discretion of the teacher.
  • Lessons missed owing to illness will be made up at the teacher’s discretion, and only when notice is received by the teacher no later than 7.30am on the morning of the lesson.
  • Notification of a student’s inability to attend a lesson due to a scheduled school excursion, examination or school event or a medical appointment is the responsibility of the parent or student and must be given to the private teacher at the earliest opportunity and no later than 48 hours prior to the lesson time otherwise the lesson will be forfeited.
  • It is the expectation that if a student is well enough to attend school, then she will attend her music lessons, even if a minor ailment precludes her from playing or singing, as aural work and musicianship can be covered in that lesson.
  • Where a teacher offers alternative times for missed lessons and these do not prove convenient, the lessons will be forfeited.

The term’s fees are not refundable.

Thank you for your consideration of these requirements  which are for the benefit of both Music tutors and students.

Sarah Turner

Head of Co-curricular Music
