Garden Party 2024 Survey

Garden Party 2024 Survey

Thank you very much for your generous support of Garden Party 2024.

It was a beautiful day and like the sun, our Pymble spirit was out in full force! Special and heartfelt thanks go to our incredible parent and staff volunteers. Your hard work and commitment made this year’s event an incredible success. We know that we’ve beaten the amount that we raised for our charities last year and are looking forward to updating you on the total amount raised for the Barbara May Foundation and Sony Camp, once all the final figures are in.

Planning is already underway for Garden Party 2025, and we need your input!

To go in the draw to win one of four Gold Class movie vouchers for two people at Event Cinemas, we invite you to complete our Garden Party planning survey to help us create a bigger and better event in 2025. Please tell us what you liked, what you didn’t and how we can do things better. You can complete the survey by clicking here.

Please note that the survey will close on 28/11/2024. Winners of the movie vouchers will be drawn in the last week of Term 4 and will be notified by Community Engagement.

Thank you!

From the Principal

From the Principal

Wow, what a wonderful way to mark the end of term. To all our amazing staff, students, parents and family members who volunteered or contributed to this year’s Garden Party spectacular, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

An enormous amount of effort goes into making this day such a success and we are delighted to let you know that, collectively, we raised $20,000 to donate to the Barbara May Foundation and $60,000 to fund this year’s Sony Camp for children with special needs. Special congratulations to our enterprising Boarding families who raised approximately $17,000 to go towards Boarding scholarships at Pymble. This is a wonderful community achievement, made even more special by the tangible feeling of belonging to something much bigger than self and pride in being part of our remarkable school.

Thank you to all those who went out of their way to say hello to me or their daughters’ teachers on Saturday and speak with so much passion about their love of Pymble; these encounters truly made our day. The day was extra special for me this year as my Mum flew in from Brisbane to attend; it was such a privilege to wander around this beautiful community event with her by my side.

Celebrating our Class of 2024

This week we farewell our oldest ‘daughters’, our Year 12 cohort, as they embark on their final weeks of revision and preparation for the pending HSC examinations. Staff members who have taught and cared for these amazing young people over the years are looking forward to formally celebrating their successes and achievements at the Year 12 Speech Day tomorrow, before the much-anticipated Valedictory Dinner with parents and carers in the evening. For some of our families, this will be especially poignant as it’s their final College event with a daughter at school. This farewell is for you, too. Thank you for many years (and, for some families, many decades and generations) of being champions of your daughter’s learning and all things Pymble. ❤️ 💙 🤍

In a final assembly for the Year 12 cohort today, we celebrated our “treasure chest of rare and precious gems” with a guard of honour – a much-loved tradition that is impossible to watch without shedding a few happy-sad tears. The girls leave with our love, respect and admiration for all they have brought to our Pymble family.

In fabulous news, some incredible results for the cohort have already been trickling in ahead of their final HSC exams. We are so thrilled that every single one of our Year 12 Drama students has received an OnSTAGE nomination for their group performance pieces, OnSTAGE being the showcase of the best HSC Drama work from students in NSW. Eight of these students have also received nominations for their Individual Performance pieces. Huge congratulations to the entire 2024 HSC Drama cohort of Chiara Calvani, Elizabeth Graves, Imogen Hawkins, Lily Hearne, Lydia Heazlewood-Lee, Ashley Park, Shanya Parti, Aashna Rana, Murphy Scott, Gigi Spiller, Ava Thomas, Sophia Thurkettle, Estelle Vander, Demitria Volos and Bella Walker for these outstanding results.

Not to be outdone, every single one of our ten Year 12 Dance students who completed their Core Performance and Major Performance exams have received a nomination for each area of study for possible inclusion in CALLBACK, the annual showcase of the best HSC Dance work from all schools in NSW. Two students also received a third nomination for their Core Composition. Congratulations to our entire Dance Class of 2024: Georgia Dixon, Ashleigh Henderson, Lisa Ji, Stephanie Lee, Georgia Shaw, Jessica Slater, Stephanie So, Gigi Spiller, Claire Spring, and Demitria Volos.

And, just today, we were advised that eight Textiles and Design students and seven Design and Technology students have been nominated for the SHAPE exhibition featuring exemplary HSC major projects from these subjects. Shout-out to Brielle Mann, Emma Eaton, Jameson Heyman, Sophie Ma, Meredith Reynolds, Arabella Smithyman, Ava Thomas and Sivi Thomas (Textiles and Design); and Alessandra Braysich, Victoria Burton, Lara Groves-Berry, Isabella Li, Jennifer Makeham, Georgia Phillips, and Sabrina Rolinek (Design and Technology).

In addition, eight of our Year 12 Music Performance students have been nominated for the ENCORE showcase. Take a bow, Airiana Chan, Lux Fritz, Grace Ho, Si Ting Ji, Genevieve Jones, Kai Xuan Li, Amelie Matthews, and Yueqin Wang.

While we are still waiting to hear which Visual Arts students are nominated or selected for ARTEXPRESS, we were absolutely wowed by their recent exhibition of HSC Bodies of Work that are currently being marked off-site.

Year 12, we are #PymbleProud of you all.

All these incredible works, performances and results demonstrate just some of the innumerable ways Pymble works hard to ensure our students are set up for their future. Whether your daughter is in Year 12, in Secondary School, or starting out in Junior School, her unique talents and passions, the collective efforts of her peers, and the work the College continues to do to ensure Pymble is a school of excellence, nationally and internationally, all contribute towards her graduating as a confident, resilient young woman of character, compassion and influence.

As we head into the holiday period, I’d like to leave you with this poem from one of our wonderful Year 4 students. The poem was one of many submitted by Junior School girls in a competition to create a book designed to spread kindness within our community. It speaks to me of one of the most important character traits of Pymble girls. Kindness to one another may not receive a mark, nomination for showcase, or contribute to your ATAR but, along with our College values, is key to making our school, and the world, a better place for all.

Kindness

If kindness had a voice, it would hum,
A melody of warmth, like the beat of a drum.
Its tune would echo in every heart’s call,
A symphony of compassion, reaching us all.

In the gentlest whispers, it would speak,
Lending a hand to the wary and meek.
With every note, it would soothe and mend,
Bringing lightness to darkness, around the bend.

Its voice would sing of hope, of light,
Guiding lost souls through the darkest night.
In every act, it would ring true and clear,
Spreading joy and love, far and near.

For kindness knows no bounds, no end,
Its voice, a beacon, a steadfast friend.
So let it sing, let it soar,
For kindness, for evermore.

– Hailey Zhang (4L)

Wishing all our families a happy and safe break. We look forward to welcoming all our students back to the wonderful world of Pymble on Tuesday 15 October.

From the Junior School

From the Junior School

From the Head of Junior School

I can’t believe we’re almost at the end of this term. I wish those of you who are heading off on holidays the best of times and safe travels. I hope that for those of you who are staying home the term break provides a re-energising change in routine before the excitement and pace of Term 4.

Term 3 has been a glorious term full of so many learning adventures and special memories. There are so many highlights but, without a doubt, one of the many highlights was the phenomenal performances by our Year 6 girls (and our very own brave actress, Ms Davenport!) in Seussical. Both performances were highly energetic, colourful and confident. It’s hard to remember the girls are only 11 and 12 years old when you see their courage and poise on stage. Here are some of the reflections from our Year 6 girls:

Gabriella Hanna (6B): “I overcame my fear of performing in front of a crowd by building stronger friendships with my fellow performers, which made me feel more comfortable and confident.

Rosie Han (6L): “I confronted my stage fright, despite being shy, by believing in myself the way my teachers believe in me.

Iris Zeng (6C): “The musical performance united the class, which boosted my confidence when it was time to say my lines.

Savannah Sherlock (6M): “When I struggled to put on my costume and got my arm stuck in the jacket, I went on acting as if it were all part of the show.

Trisha Viswanathan (6M) “I had never performed a solo in front of that many people at the GMCPA while wearing a headset, so I focused on embracing the experience and opportunity.

Tanvi Raniga (6M): “I imagined myself giving my best performance, believing that if I could envision it in my mind, it could become a reality!

Wendy Pan (6D): “I demonstrated courage by standing on stage and reflecting on how far I had come in embodying the character. I focused on conveying their personality through my acting and expressions.

Chelsea Wang (6G): “I showed courage by smiling in the spotlight, even while feeling nervous, and bravely singing my solo.

Sissi Ko (6G): “I showed courage by wearing a rainbow-coloured wig that I wouldn’t normally choose and embraced a sassy attitude to match the character’s personality.

Garden Party last weekend was so much fun, and I know how hard many of you worked with our Junior School stalls and the College barbecue. Thank you for your commitment to our community. I want to say a heartfelt thank you to our families who prepared the food in Main Hall as it was so delicious. Days like Garden Party are such a fabulous way for us to come together and celebrate as the very large family we are. My sister-in-law, a proud Pymble alumni, came with her young family and as a former Pymble rower she couldn’t resist having a go at the rowing competition and for much of the day held the fastest mum time!

Congratulations and thank you to all our girls who entered the colouring and cake competition; the array of talent on display was outstanding. I loved seeing hedgehog-inspired cakes and even a very clever crochet hedgehog!

Year 1 and Year 3 are out at Vision Valley

This week our courageous Year 3 girls had their first overnight Outdoor Education Program. For many of them this was their first night away from home and we are proud of their spirit and determination to embrace the challenges of cave art, bushwalking, cooking damper over a campfire, the sugar glider five-metre aerial challenge and the much-loved water slide!

I loved spending the day with them all out at Vision Valley on Tuesday. Special shout out to Mrs Dreverman for her courage in having a go at the ‘vomitron’ (being spun around very fast as you ascend into the air) on the sugar glider!

Year 1 also enjoyed their first Outdoor Education experience at Vision Valley and by all accounts had a wonderful adventure together.

Year 5 visiting St Ignatius Riverview

Our Year 5 girls joined students from St Ignatius’ College, Riverview for an action packed day of constructing and racing billy carts, sparking excitement and teamwork. Throughout the day the girls engaged in hands-on problem solving which fostered critical thinking as they constructed their billy carts. The event combined creativity, engineering and friendly competition amongst the students, leaving the girls with newfound skills and memories.

Tomorrow is our Kindness Day

Our SRC leaders (Zoe Chong, Alice Hockley, Bianca Ng and Chelsea Wang) have led many initiatives to improve our school this year and tomorrow they are proud that we are holding our Kindness Day which was an idea from earlier this year which is now coming to life. Throughout the day girls across the Junior School will participate in activities which focus on kindness to self, kindness to the environment and kindness to others. These include:

  • Painting pots and making paper flowers to give to our elders at the Uniting Care Centres
  • Sewing felt hearts to give to our Year 12 girls as an act of support before their first HSC exams
  • Painting kindness rocks to place around the campus and community to bring a sprinkle of kindness and joy to people who spot them
  • Publishing stories and play scripts with an environmental message which will then be shared with the community

I am very grateful to all girls from Year 1 to 6 who have represented their class as SRC Captains this year as their ideas have such positive impact and ensure our Junior School is a place that all our girls can be proud of and a place where they know their ideas and voice is heard. To quote from Seussical: ‘A person’s a person no matter how small’ and all of our voices deserve to be equally valued. Thank you to Mr Robinson and Miss Buchner who have mentored the SRC girls this year. A special shout out to Tanvi Raniga who has led the Walking and Givin’ campaign for our Junior School which happens tomorrow.

Opportunity for our Junior School artists and designers

Pymble’s values of care, courage, responsibility, respect and integrity, reflect who we are as people, inform our behaviour and show the world what we, as individuals and as a College, know are important.

These five values also inform our statement of intent, Watch us Change the World, defining our goal to make the world a better place for all.

To celebrate the launch of our Behaviour Statements related to each of our Pymble Values, I am delighted to announce a very special Pymble competition to design the cover of our Pymble 2025 Junior School Student Diary.

The competition for Junior School is open to girls from Year 1 – Year 6 and entries will be accepted until day 1 of Term 4 at 8.00am. If your daughter is interested in having a go at this competition, please talk through these requirements with her:

Requirements

  • An original artwork, either hand drawn or digital, that represents the five College values and their relevant behaviour statements
  • This is an opportunity to explore your creativity, using visual elements to express your ideas. Please keep text and words to a minimum.
  • Your artwork must measure 180mm width x 170mm height.
  • Digital submissions must be made in high resolution, in JPEG or PDF format.
  • Each student must submit an artist statement (minimum 100 words) explaining your idea, rationale, inspiration and/or intentions. This statement, and your school photo, will be printed in the school diary.
  • Artworks will be judged by Dr Hadwen, Mrs Bird, Mr Robinson, Ms Rockwell, Mrs Kenny, Mr Raymond and me, and the winner will be decided on the demonstration of age appropriate technical skill and how effectively the College values are conveyed.
  • The winner will also receive a $100 gift voucher to Event Cinemas
  • Artwork must be clearly labelled with your name, year and Compass Class
  • Entries are to be submitted to Hedgehog House or to me on kbrown@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au

Take care and I look forward to seeing you all again in Term 4.

A message from Mrs Lara Bird – Deputy Head of Junior School – Academics

Congratulations to Flora Wu (Year 2) who is a Silver Award recipient in the Writeon Competition 2024. This competition is for students across NSW in Years 1 to 6; this year there were over 740 entries! Writeon is a highly competitive academic writing competition, and we are very Pymble proud of Flora and her wonderful achievement.

As the term ends, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on the academic challenges the girls have embraced and the courage they have shown as learners. Whether it was trying out different skills, learning new strategies, working collaboratively, presenting or performing in front of a small or large audience, sharing their creative ideas or having a go, every step forward is a celebration of growth.

As we enter the holiday break, it’s also important for the girls to find time for rest and to follow their passions outside the classroom – whether that’s drawing or painting, reading, or exploring the outdoors at the beach or bushwalking. Taking time to unwind and follow your passions should fuel creativity and curiosity for Term 4 ahead.

Looking forward into Term 4, students will dive into exciting topics across all year levels. Kindergarten will explore the properties of materials, while Year 1 will learn about how things grow and the external features of living things. Year 2 will investigate forces, and Year 3 will journey back to study early explorers. Year 4 will examine changes to the Earth’s surface investigating soil, rocks and erosion, Year 5 will delve into states of matter, and Year 6 will explore the world of extreme weather.

For families looking for activities during the break, consider a visit to local museums, parks and galleries. The Maritime Museum offers fascinating insights into sea explorations, while the Powerhouse Museum and the Australian Museum showcase science and technology wonders. The Art Gallery of New South Wales is perfect for those who love to explore creative works and draw inspiration.

Have a wonderful break, and I look forward to seeing everyone in Term 4, ready for new academic adventures and challenges!

An important message from Mr Robinson – Deputy Head of Junior School – Operations

We are seeking help from parents across the Junior School to assist on a Wednesday and Friday sorting lunch orders and handing out cold drinks/frozen treats that have been pre-ordered. Should you be willing to assist, please enter you name into one of the fields below (we are initially limiting the form to only accept one submission per person, to share this opportunity with all members of the community).

Please click this link if you are able to assist.

Note: There will be no cash or card purchases on Friday. Items are only available for pre-purchase via the Junior School Flexi-Schools app. Years 5 and 6 may use this facility, or access Archies Cafe as normal.

OSHC Registrations

Please note that there are 55 days left to register at OSHC. All Junior School students need to be registered at OSHC (through the Kidsoft Website) in order to enrol in new or additional co-curricular offerings, including swimming and tennis.

If your daughter is not registered with OSHC she will not be able to be enrolled in new activities from Term 4 2024 or be eligible to select new activities for 2025. Separate instructions will be shared via MyPymble notices that demonstrate where to find your OSHC registration number within Kidsoft, as this number will be a mandatory field when registering for 2025 co-curricular activities on 20 November 2024.

Water bottles

With the temperature increasing, a reminder to ensure you daughter has a named water bottle with her at school. Water bottle filling stations and water bubblers are available throughout the Junior School.

A message from the Administration Office

Thank you parents for a wonderful Term 3 and for your assistance in notifying us if your daughter had changes to her normal school routine day, was absent from school, or if you needed to pass a message onto your daughter.

A reminder that your daughter will return to school in full summer uniform for Term 4. Please ensure all items of clothing and items are clearly named with her full name so it can be easily returned to her if it is found. Further information regarding uniform and appearance can be found on pages 32 and 33 of your daughter’s College diary.

We wish you a safe and lovely school term break and look forward to providing assistance and seeing your daughter in Term 4.

From the Middle School

From the Middle School

This week we are saying farewell to Ms Mimmo, one of our Heads of Year 8, as she takes up the leadership role of Deputy Head of Boarding here at Pymble. I would like to thank Theresa again for her investment in ensuring the girls have been so well cared over the last two years. Her contributions to all things Middle School have been greatly appreciated.

Next term, we will be welcoming two new Compass teachers to the Year 7 team. As I shared with you previously, Ms Cunningham is stepping into the Head of Year 8 role from the start of term 4 and Ms Foster will be taking ongoing responsibility for her 7 Hammond B Compass group. Mr Catulong will be taking some well-deserved leave for term 4, and Ms Al Khaky will be taking responsibility for his 7 Bennett A Compass group during this time.

I’d like to wish all of our Middle School families a very safe term break. I hope that the girls take time to enjoy away from routines and we look forward to welcoming them back for the start of Term 4 on Tuesday 15 October.

Congratulations again to our Year 8 students who participated with such enthusiasm last week in their Outdoor Education camp experience. You were wonderful ambassadors for Pymble. Please enjoy the student reflections below.

Student reflections

Camp was an amazing experience that I will never forget. I have made many new friends that will last forever. Every day was great excitement to be moving from each campsite as we had to pack up and reset our tents each time giving us an extra fun job.

We also made our own breakfast with bread over the fire and the amazing waffles when we were back at base. The day’s activities included low ropes, base 7, archery, canoeing, hiking, wombat hole, river run and many more. All these activities were great for team building and overall thrill and excitement.

Each night’s dinner was made by a group of students from the camp group. They included minute steak, nachos, rotisserie chicken, beef noodles and concluding with damper or s’mores as a sweet treat. My highlight of the week was the river run as it was messy but great fun to jump into a big mud pool, something I will most likely never be able to do again.

Something else I really enjoyed was spending time with my camp group, especially when we would play footy, cards or sit around the campfire telling each other stories that would run late into the night. The main part of this camp was being able to have a great time whilst not having to care about anything but the excitement of the next day.

Written by Anabella Legge-Hughes (Year 8)

Year 8 camp lasted about five days and four nights around Colo River, Upper Colo. In that time, there were some unforgettable activities for Year 8 to take part in while we were away from our screens. Among all the amazing activities such as cooking, archery, rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, and hiking, I enjoyed the Base 7 activity the most.

This consisted of sneaking up a hill in camo to try to approach the top tower to get points. This exciting activity was a great way to work our brains by finding strategic ways to keep hidden in the bushes. Though there were many fun activities, there were some challenges throughout this experience. For example, we couldn’t choose our group members. I was quite worried about this part, but I realised talking to people outside of my friend group wasn’t too bad. Staying warm at night was also a struggle, as I didn’t expect the nights to be so cold.

Overall, I would definitely do it again, as the experience helped me gain independence, courage, and I am grateful for stepping out of my comfort zone.

A message from Victoria Harrison, Head of Upper School

Term 3 has been an exciting time for Upper School. We’ve settled into our beautiful new spaces, welcomed over 30 international exchange students and enjoyed our third Vision Valley Residential program of the year. The girls have worked hard, achieving great things both in the classroom and in their co-curricular activities. I’m sure everyone is feeling a bit tired, so I hope they take some time during the holiday break to relax and recharge for Term 4.

It’s been wonderful to see the common room bustling with activity, with girls connecting during break time and making good use of the kitchen space. We’re planning to add toasters and sandwich presses to enhance their experience. Next term, we’re excited to invite Year 8 students to join us in the common room during scheduled MBS times, fostering connections with Year 9 and giving them a taste of Upper School life.

A big thank you to all the girls, families and the Upper School team for their efforts in making last Saturday’s Garden Party a great success.

We were delighted to hear that Tara Sproules-Nath was awarded a Very High Commendation (one of twelve) in the Global Essay Prize (Junior Category) for the John Locke Award. Tara was shortlisted along with 6000 other students from a huge thirty five thousand students all over the world. A huge congratulations, Tara.

In Assembly on Tuesday, Jacaranda Awards for Term 3 were presented, along with Blue Colours and our Mathematic Prefects presented Katherine and Vivian with High Distinction awards from the Australian Maths Trust and Jenny He, a gold award in the Informatics Olympiad.

Year 10 Upcoming Events

For our Year 10 students and families, we are asking that you complete the consent on the MyPymble parent portal for the Pymble-Shore Dance by Friday as final numbers are required at the start of the holidays.

In Week 6, next term, all Year 10 students will be involved in one of four OEP programs. This program is a compulsory part of the Year 10 program, and we look forward to supporting all girls to enjoy this fantastic opportunity to be in nature and be involved in a rewarding experience. Information letters and the links for consent and medical forms have been posted on MyPymble. It would be great if all parents could complete these by the end of term. We appreciate your support in this important part of your daughter’s journey at Pymble.

Thank you for ensuring all documentation is submitted by tomorrow afternoon.

We wish all our Upper School students and their families a safe and restful break. Special wishes to our students heading to the United States on the Science Tour on Saturday and to our returning exchange students. Farewell to our treasured Year 12s of 2024

As we bid farewell to our remarkable Year 12s of 2024, a wave of mixed emotions sweeps over us. We will deeply miss their good sense, their unwavering dedication and their huge efforts across every pursuit—be it academic, sporting, cultural, speaking, performing, cooking or creating. Each one of them has left an indelible mark on our community, inspiring us with their kindness and inclusivity. As they embark on new adventures, this week we celebrate the memories we’ve shared and the bright futures that await them. Thank you, Year 12s, for being such an integral part of our journey; you will always hold a special place in our hearts.

In a heartfelt gesture of gratitude, our Year 11 students have created a beautiful heart-shaped farewell, filled with personal messages expressing their appreciation and well-wishes for the Year 12s. In turn, the Year 12s have contributed to a Tree of Knowledge for Year 11, sharing invaluable advice on how to navigate their upcoming year. This exchange symbolises the strong bonds of friendship that have flourished over the past two years, highlighting the support that define our community. Together, these tributes reflect the lasting connections that will continue to thrive, even as we part ways.

On behalf of the entire Senior School team, I would like to thank you, the parents of our beautiful Year 12s and thank the students, for their wit, their willingness to try their best and their kindnesses they have shown to all of us and each other. We will miss them all dearly!

Back to the Beginning Assembly

Last Friday, students who have been with the College since Kindergarten, Year 1 or Year 2 took a delightful trip down memory lane as they presented a beautiful assembly for our youngest learners. The atmosphere was filled with joy as the little ones eagerly participated in a guessing game, singing and dancing along with their older peers. It was heartwarming to see the connections formed over the years, especially as some Year 12 students reunited with the teachers who guided them during those foundational years. During the assembly, we also celebrated students who model our College values and extended warm birthday wishes to those celebrating this week. This special gathering reminded us all of the enduring bonds we create within our school community.

Garden Party

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the Year 11 and 12 students, along with their dedicated teachers, who played a vital role in making the Garden Party a success. Their enthusiasm in selling guessing game tickets and serving countless Devonshire Teas truly showcased the wonderful effort and great community spirit on display. It was lovely to see everyone come together to create such a joyful event, fostering connections within our College family. Your hard work and commitment are greatly appreciated!

From the Boarding School

From the Boarding School

It has been a huge week of celebration and togetherness starting with our Boarder Parent Group meeting on Friday – the perfect opportunity to discuss all things Boarding. There was the added bonus for our Year 9 parents to meet with our Head of Upper School, Mrs Victoria Harrison, to discuss all things Vision Valley and exchange.

Our annual sojourn to Warrawee did not disappoint with our Boarders embracing all the fun of a live band. There was lots of singing and dancing and once again, the very gracious band, Press Club, encouraged the girls to join them on stage and perform. Many of our Boarder parents enjoyed dinner at Wahroonga before joining us at the event and they too made the most of the opportunity to ‘bust a move’ with their daughters.

Garden Party

I don’t think it is a secret that Garden Party is my favourite day on the College calendar and this year was another fabulous occasion. It was nice to be back in the ‘thick of things’ on the flagstones outside the Hall with a lovely spot to catch up with current and past families. A laden produce stall, the fabulous Hillbilly Cider Bar and gourmet pork rolls all helped to ensure the Boarder Produce stall was a must visit on the day.

None of this would have been possible without the amazing Edwina Beveridge who co-ordinated the Boarders’ stall. Edwina worked tirelessly with her committee of Edwina Payne, Tessa McLaughlin, Kirsty Pockley, Sharon Maslin and Tara Taubenschlag to ensure the day was a huge hit.  Thank you to all of you who contributed in so many special ways. It was a fabulous effort and even better to know that all profits will go to the Boarder Parent Scholarship Fund.

Farewell Year 12

On Tuesday night it was our Boarders chance to farewell their Year 12 sisters. Rev Danielle put together a beautiful service to appropriately honour these special girls and many of our Boarders participated to give them a wonderful send off. There were tears – happy, sad and nostalgic – and I am sure this will be a cherished memory for our 2024 Year 12s.

The service was followed by a delicious and very stylish dinner by Chartwells. With a menu filled with Boarder favourites and a beautifully decorated Boarders’ Dining Room, it was the perfect end to a special evening.

Celebrating with our families

Tonight we celebrate our Year 12 Boarders with their parents and it promises to be a fabulous night of reminiscing and acknowledging the wonderful contributions of these special young women. They are a great bunch of Boarders, kind, fun loving and hard working and I am incredibly grateful to our families who have entrusted them to our care. I look forward to sharing some happy snaps with you next term. For now, we wish them well as they prepare for their final examinations and head off on their next adventure.

The Brooksie Award

The Margaret Brooke Award, also known as ‘The Brooksie’, is awarded to a Boarder who exemplifies the spirit of a tenacious, courageous, compassionate and giving woman.

This term I am delighted to announce Imogen (Immie) of Year 12 as our deeply deserving recipient.

Immie has been a delight ever since first arriving in Boarding in Year 8. She was quick to make friends and inspired us all with her daily yoga routine. She continues to lead by example, wearing her uniform with pride and keeping an immaculate room.

Immie is courageous and tenacious, most recently she has researched and applied for alternate entry schemes for university and continued to give her all across each of her subjects. She is a much-loved housemate, with a fabulous sense of humour. Immie is always willing to step up and not afraid to put herself ‘out there’. Her individual piece for HSC drama had the entire audience in stitches.

Just like our Brooksie, Immie juggles a multitude of activities, she has conquered no less than three major works, two for Drama and one for Visual Arts. The latter was a beautiful depiction of the stories held within the heritage of the boarding houses and the strings that tie the community together. Immie also works in the OSHC Centre, plays hockey and water polo and is an active member of our Boarding family. She likes to give back and shares her many talents generously whether it be producing videos, acknowledging country or public speaking.

In the five years that I have known Immie, she has left me with a smile following every encounter, she is kind, inclusive and joy to be around. She embodies the Boarder spirit and a most fitting recipient of the Brooksie award. Congratulations Immie!

Eat Like a Boarder

We would love you to join us for dinner on Monday 14 October at 6.00pm, when you return your girls from the term break. This will be the ‘real’ experience, with you being able to enjoy the regular dinner service, just as the girls do each evening. If you would like to join us, please rsvp to boarding@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au no later than Monday 30 September.

From the Chaplains

From the Chaplains

The holidays are now just a day away and I am sure that you are all tired and needing some rest. At the same time, I know that you probably have a thousand things you need to get done during these holidays so that you are ready to face the new term.

Most of you will have some sort of list, either in your head, or written down. Your list might include study, catching up on homework, assignments, exam preparation, exercise, sporting events, birthday parties and catching up with friends. Even in the holidays it often feels impossible to do all the things that we have to do, let alone fitting in some chill time to simply listen to music, or read a book just for the fun of it.

And yet rest and relaxation are really important. Our body needs time to be still. Our thoughts appreciate a rest from the many distractions of every day.

The scriptures give us many suggestions for how we might do this. Genesis 1 speaks to the idea of planning rest into your busyness by ensuring you take space once a difficult or complex task is complete. God creates for 6 days, and then God rests on the 7th. God takes time to enjoy the satisfaction of having achieved after a period of busyness.  We have built this into the rhythm of our modern lives with Sunday in many cultures the day of rest.

In the Gospels we find that Jesus often takes time to rest before he begins a new stage in his journey. He does this by finding a quiet spot away from the crowds and praying. The time that Jesus takes to rest helps him to prepare and to be ready for the joys and challenges that he will face.

In the Psalms we can assume that the writers took rest when they needed to. Taking time to write, pray and sing into the chaos and confusion.

There are of course other ways we might find rest. We might plan just to rest and leave everything else for a time.

The way we seek rest is also different. Rest for you may be a busy activity that is different from your every day that inspires, entertains and helps you to think about differently for a time. Rest for you might be taking time to plan your next adventure or wondering about what the future may bring.

Whatever your rest is these holidays, I hope it is wonderful. And that you return next term refreshed and renewed to start again.

Resonate Dance Competition

Our Secondary Eisteddfod Dance students had a thrilling experience participating in the Australian Dance Festival (ADF) on Friday and Sunday. ADF is a remarkable celebration of Australia’s top talent in dance, offering a dynamic blend of workshops, industry talks, and captivating performances. The festival offers open classes in a wide range of dance styles, making it a great opportunity for dancers to grow and explore different techniques.

The festival was an incredible whirlwind of excitement, talent, and inspiration for our dance students, who demonstrated their dedication, passion, and courage. Here’s a recap of their unforgettable journey:

Friday 20 September

The day started with our Jazz White team participating in a variety of workshops, where they had the chance to learn from experienced choreographers. It was a motivating experience, guided by an inspirational teacher and surrounded by countless passionate dancers. A highlight of the workshops was that many of our students were selected by the choreographers to perform again in front of the other workshop participants.

In the evening, Jazz White proudly took to the ADF stage to represent our college. They competed in the ‘Resonate’ competition and delivered a breathtaking performance of ‘Day of the Dead,’ captivating the audience with their energy and precision. Their look was enhanced by a professional makeup artist who crafted a stunning, standout design. Congratulations to their choreographer, Miss Alex De Santi, for guiding the team to such a spectacular performance!

Sunday 22 September

On Sunday, our Pymble Eisteddfod Secondary dancers participated in further ADF workshops, getting the change to learn from some of Australia’s top choreographers.

Our students participated in various styles, including Jazz, Contemporary, and Hip Hop, alongside dancers of all ages and skill levels. They loved the chance to try new things, push their boundaries, and connect with other dancers from around the country.

It was an exciting experience, and we are proud of how our dancers embraced every class with enthusiasm and a love for learning. We look forward to seeing the skills and inspiration they bring back to their classes at Pymble!

(Sunday section written by Miss Genevieve Gardiner (Dance Program Co-ordinator))

Briar Nolet – International Dancer Visits Pymble

On Monday 23 September, our top tier Pymble Dancers were lucky enough to host well-renowned dancer and actress, Briar Nolet, for a two-hour master class.

This special workshop featured a comprehensive class focused on strength, conditioning, technique, and choreography, followed by a Q&A session with Briar. Students also had the chance for a meet-and-greet, where they could take individual photos with her on their devices, along with a group photo. Each student attending received a signed poster.

The dancers are to be commended on their bravery in their approach to taking a class with a celebrity who they all look up to. The experience pushed the students out of their comfort zones and provided a wealth of inspiration.

15 students are now being selected from this workshop to learn a short two to two and half minute troupe routine, created in four hours with Briar, to be performed at the Dance Showcase. This routine will continue to be reworked and cast for years to come.

Congratulations to Teagan Ning (Year 10) who was selected during the workshop as the Number One choice by Briar.

Garden Party

What a spectacular day at the Garden Party! The crowds came in numbers, making it a vibrant and festive atmosphere. Our busy dance day featured performances from our Hip Hop Crew below the chapel stairs, and we proudly showcased our dance stall.

Mrs Pettigrew and the Dance Captains chatted with lots of visitors at the busy stall, sharing insights and discussing all things related to Pymble dance. The friendship bracelet making station was a big hit, with plenty of chatting and connection as they were made.

We also held an exciting raffle with fantastic prizes and all prize winners have been contacted.

  • 1st Prize – A dance photoshoot for one dancer and two friends, including digital photos and a 12×18 inch print of each dancer’s favourite shot (valued at $595.00).
  • 2nd Prize – Four Dance Showcase tickets (valued at $120.00).
  • 3rd Prize – Morning tea with Miss Cluff for one student and two dance friends.

Congratulations to the lucky winners.

It was a lovely day and thank you to our dance staff and student dance leadership team for all their hard work in creating a wonderful dance stall.

Dance Showcase 2024 – ‘A Date to Remember’

The annual Pymble Dance Showcase is just around the corner, scheduled for Week 5 of Term 4.

This year’s theme is “A Date to Remember.” Students have been reflecting on meaningful memories, moments, and milestones in their co-curricular classes, and all routines will align with this theme.

We encourage all parents and students to check the Dance Showcase website for important information.

Please remember that it is essential for students to attend at least 80% of their lessons throughout the year. We will be reviewing any unexplained absences or those exceeding 20% absences to assess students’ readiness to perform. As Term 4 approaches, we expect all students to attend their classes regularly to prepare for the Showcase. Familiarity with their choreography will help ensure a wonderful experience for everyone.

Additional details will be posted on the showcase website during the term break, including the schedule. Tickets go on sale Week 1 of Term 4.

Thank you!

Garden Party proved to be yet another gorgeous day. The weather was sensational and our clever bands, Piccoline Choir, and Pizzicato strings gave the day an extra sense of beauty.

Thank you to all students involved, and I extend my gratitude to our fabulous Music staff; Ms D’Elia, Ms Farlow, Ms Buckley, Ms Lee, Mrs Hare, Mr Schweinberger, Ms Ashton, Mr Stafford, Ms Zeltzer, Mr Rossman, and Ms Gladys.

Joubert Singers Performance of JS Bach’s St Matthew’s Passion

Recently, a group of our students participated in a performance of JS Bach’s St Matthew’s Passion, joining the Joubert Singers. The Joubert Singers is a group of non-auditioned members of the community who love to sing, directed by Ms Erzsi Marossecky. Erzsi works with one of our trios along with teaching at the Conservatorium of Music. The students who participated in this concert formed lasting friendships, and met people outside of our Pymble world, learning to sing a difficult piece of music. They gave up their time on the weekends to be part of the rehearsals and showed care and commitment to their musical pursuits. Well done to Ellie Lau (Year 7), Constance Chow (Year 8), Elena Duan (Year 8), Annabella Bayfield (Year 8), and Joanna Au (Year 10).

Tour 2024

Parents have been sent home a google sheet to complete, asking for instruments to be weighed and measured. Please encourage your daughter to continue to practise over the holidays as we are going to be giving more repertoire to prepare in Term 4.
