As the end-of-year showcases and celebrations continue, our girls continue to amaze us with the scope of their learning and how deeply they lean into their unique gifts, talents and passions. This week we have the pleasure of acknowledging our learners in co-curricular Theatresports and Film, Rhythmic and Artistic Gymnastics, Language Arts and Drama – and we were even treated to a fabulous Nativity play by our Year 12 (2025) Boarders on Tuesday night at their final Christmas Celebration in the Chapel. It’s gratifying to see our students ‘own’ their work with so much pride and joy.

While we are on the topic of exceptional creativity, we were thrilled to see an incredible 24 of our Year 12 (2024) Visual Arts students nominated for HSC ARTEXPRESS, which showcases the best practical work in this course in the state. Just this week, we were advised that four of these students have had their work selected for the exhibition, which is the maximum number from any one school in NSW. Congratulations to our gifted students and brilliant staff on this wonderful recognition of your talents.

We also shared a special end-of year-honouring of our Year 6 cohort at their final Chapel Service and Celebration of Learning before they step up to the Middle School next year. Congratulations on this milestone, girls, and always remember that your kindness and our College values are your trusty guides as you navigate your new learning environment in the Secondary School together.

Together is a key word at Pymble. Our motto of “Nothing to you, without you” means we will always consult and collaborate with our community on important matters. The launch of our Wise Phone Initiative is an example of this approach, which was based on student and parent feedback confirming a universal desire to work together to reclaim the childhood our young people deserve, off their devices.

Thank you for your feedback on our uniform review

Last Friday, all parents and carers, students in Years 4 to 12, Alumni and current staff received an email from our Deputy Principal, Ms Rockwell, requesting feedback on a collection of items for a proposed new uniform for all year groups at the College. The ideas presented were based on requests from our students for changes, and the designs informed by student, parent and Alumni focus groups.

Continuing our commitment to consultation on this important decision, Ms Rockwell and I also brought samples along to this week’s assembly, which raised some interesting comments and questions from students in Years 7 to 11. While the black watch blazer inspired a mixed reaction from the 2268 survey respondents, we certainly heard from the girls in assembly that, contrary to focus group feedback, the proposed new design is a ‘miss’. Students expressed a strong desire to remain with a navy blazer and black watch tartan skirt. Thanks for the feedback girls – we heard you and will revert.

The uniform review was undertaken with four key goals in mind:

  1. To address issues with the current uniform, as expressed by our students, such as the itchy fabric of the skirt and the sheerness of the shirt.
  2. To address the frequent requests from multiple groups of students over the years who have campaigned for pants to be introduced into the uniform range. Since the survey was sent on Friday, more than 30 per cent of our students have indicated they would like pants as an option. (As I write this today, I’m wearing a pant suit!)
  3. To reduce the number of uniform items required for students by providing options that can be worn in both summer and winter instead of having separate seasonal uniforms. This will also reduce the cost to parents and carers.
  4. To simplify the uniform for our Junior School students and introduce items such as skorts, at their request, so our girls feel more comfortable being active at school.

As mentioned above, based on all the feedback we have received so far, it’s clear we are not there yet.

As a result, we have made the decision to pause for now, and work toward introducing items that bring minimal change and maximum benefit, such as skorts in the Junior School and a pants option in the Secondary School (that doesn’t end up looking like ‘navy on navy’ when paired with a navy jumper or blazer). Of course, any new items introduced will be phased in.

Our survey remains open until 10.00am tomorrow, Friday 29 November, and we warmly invite you to add your voice to this ongoing discussion if you haven’t already done so.

Click here to submit your feedback.

To all those who have taken the time to share your thoughts on this first round of ideas, thank you. Your feedback shifts us into the next phase of the review, which will be more aligned with our current uniform.

Our girls have told us, repeatedly, that they would like to see changes to their uniform, for comfort and for flexibility. We love that our girls and community are so proud of their school, and their uniform. We remain committed to listening to the needs of our students and to getting this right for them.

Windows into learning

As we begin to wrap up this series for the year, we hope you have enjoyed these slices of life in classrooms at Pymble in 2024. This week we go behind the scenes of our upcoming Kindy nativity play – oh my goodness, I can’t wait for that one! – and the role PDHPE plays in developing leadership skills.

Kindy gets into the Christmas spirit

In Performing Arts this term, Kindergarten students have been diligently preparing for their special Nativity performance next Tuesday. The girls have worked so hard since early in Term 3 to learn all the songs, dance moves and actions, and they have been steadily growing in their confidence and love of performing. Starting from Week 5, students have had the opportunity to rehearse on stage in our beautiful Chapel. The first rehearsal in particular was a magical moment of learning. It was wonderful to see elements of the production starting to come together and to hear the students’ joyful voices united in singing and telling the story of the nativity.

Precious too were moments where students stepped out of their comfort zones and gained a boost in confidence from being able to practise performing in front of their teachers and peers. Students have also contributed their amazing artistic talents to the production by drawing and colouring backdrops which will be featured on screen. The 2024 Kindergarten Nativity will truly be a magical experience and a fabulous showcase of students’ learning in Performing Arts, and we can’t wait to share it with our Kindy parents and carers next week.

Training, teamwork and leadership in PE

This term, Year 9 students have been taking the lead in PE, working collaboratively in teams to lead their peers through a nominated sport.

Students began by reflecting on their strengths to help determine their various roles within their team. They then embraced these roles to lead their peers in training sessions and tournaments. Roles included leading warm-ups and cool-downs as the conditioning team, motivating and promoting wellbeing as team captains, setting and implementing rules of the game as team officials, designing and leading training session as team coaches, and organising the setup for all sessions as equipment officers.

It has been a wonderful opportunity for students to strengthen their leadership skills and build their capacity to engage in reflection and act on feedback to enhance their learning and the learning of others.

As we come towards the end of the school year, we honour our Year 6 leaders who have held specific responsibilities for portfolios within our Junior School. Each of these groups of leaders have been mentored by members of staff who have a vested interest in that specific area of leadership and the girls were honoured in our Year 3 to 6 assembly this week by some of our staff. Here are some of the words shared in appreciation of their leadership throughout the year:

Chapel Leaders: Emily Deutscher, Olivia Guo, Lakshi Rajeev and Tanvi Raniga

Thank you for your leadership of chapel this year. Across the year you have led our Year 3 to 6 chapel services with confidence, challenging yourselves and modelling the college values, particularly showing courage reading some of the difficult names in the Bible. Thank you for working with the Chaplains and the Year 7 to 12 Chapel Leaders on initiatives across the year, including leading and running Junior Ignite. Thank you for being wonderful role models and for supporting the younger Junior School girls this year.

Library Leaders: Emma Campbell, Imogen Martin, Charlotte Xue and Isabelle Yeh

Dear Emma, Imogen, Charlotte and Izzy

Thank you for being the best Library Leaders we’ve ever had! I know you are the first Library Leaders we’ve ever had but you have set an extremely high standard for those who come after you. We are so proud to have worked with you as our inaugural Library Leaders.

Your cheerful energy lights up the library and your enthusiasm in fulfilling your responsibilities has played a vital role in fostering a warm and welcoming environment for everyone in the library. Your love for our Junior School Library shines through everything you do, including:

  • your dedication in taking on library monitor duties every week and contributing to the smooth running of the library – you are always willing to jump in where needed and we appreciate that so much;
  • planning and running the fabulous opening assembly for Book Week;
  • helping us prepare for author visits – it was so much fun decorating for Nat Amoore and Tim Harris and Year 3 loved it;
  • creating and running our Staff Reading Challenge; and
  • creating and writing Shelf Life our first ever library newsletter – available this week!

Thank you!

A letter to our Library Leaders from Ms Itzcovitz, Mrs Colquhoun, Mrs Walker and Mrs Mann

Kindness Leaders: Safina Burgess, Melody Chen, Ria Iyer and Chloe Morrison

Our Kindness Leaders are changemakers. Determined to lead by example, they have consistently modelled kindness in all their interactions this year and advocated for those who are often marginalised within society. These phenomenal leaders have led initiatives to show care and kindness across the year and inspired so many younger students. Creative and goal focused, they inspired so many Junior School students to run in the Lindfield Fun Run that we won a school award, and they have designed and installed little boxes of kindness around the campus to try and encourage others to feel the impact of kindness and, in turn, undertake random acts of kindness.

Thank you Safina, Melody, Ria and Chloe for all your hard work; you’ve had a significant impact on our community through the kindness you have modelled and led. You have been exemplary leaders and the way you have worked together in all you have done has helped shine kindness through our weekly meetings and across our Junior School.

From Mrs Brown

STEM Leaders: Adeline Wu, Charlotte Wu, Michelle Xing (in absentia) and Lily Zhang:

Our STEM Leaders are the dreamers and innovators who live and breathe STEM, inspiring our students to problem-solve and create. From leading the STEAM Festival with flashing lights, racing robots, and ingenious Wonka-inspired games, to turning paddle pop sticks into planes and making music from aluminium rods, they have built a world of wonder for the Junior School. Like Willy Wonka, they’ve shown us that with imagination and curiosity, “Wanna change the world?” has only one answer: “There’s nothing to it.”

From Mr Brown

Student Representative Council (SRC) Leaders:  Zoe Chong, Alice Hockley, Bianca Ng, Chelsea Wang,

Our SRC leaders have ever so capably enabled student voice in 2024. Chairing the weekly meetings of SRC leaders from Years 1 to 6, they have encouraged class representatives to gather feedback from students of all ages and bring these to the group for discussion, debate and vote. Our leaders have shared the outcome of weekly meetings with Mrs Brown and met with her to bring a number of the ideas to fruition, including our Kindness and Service Day in Term 3, advocated for additional playground equipment and created opportunities for students to become involved, with drawing and colouring competitions throughout the year.

Sustainability Leaders: Sophie Ahn, Katelyn Gu, Sarah Tew and Oliana Zeccola

Our brilliant Sustainability Leaders, Sarah, Sophie, Katelyn and Oliana, have led with unwavering passion and enthusiasm, inspiring our Sustainability captains and the wider Junior School community to take meaningful action for the environment. From gifting their time for Clean Up Australia Day initiatives to reporting on tree planting within our College, launching a nature poetry competition, they’ve worked tirelessly to make sustainability a central focus within the Junior School. Their support for younger students, engagement with guest speakers, and dedication to teamwork have left a lasting impact, creating a greener, happier school for everyone. Thank you for your incredible efforts and leadership!

Farewell to a great amongst our team

As we come to the end of the school year, we inevitably farewell some of our staff members who head off for new adventures in different schools or away from Sydney. We thank each of those staff members for their contributions and service to our Junior School community and send them on their way with our love and best wishes.

One of those staff members is Mrs Geraldine Roberts who leaves at the end of this year to spend more time with her family and in particular her daughter and two young grandchildren who live in Brisbane. Mrs Roberts has given 11 years of dedicated service to our Junior School and positively impacted the learning of hundreds of little girls who began their school journey under her nurturing eye. Mrs Roberts has brought great wisdom, calm leadership and kindness to our girls, our community and our team and she will be dearly missed. We send her off to her new adventures as the beloved Gigi, as she is known to her grandchildren, with much love and gratitude from us all.

Geraldine will leave a legacy that will continue to inspire us as we strive to create a supportive and nurturing environment for all our students to feel valued and supported. – Mrs Genia Wright

I am delighted to announce that from 2025, Mrs Genia Wright will assume responsibility as Coordinator for Learning Enhancement K-6 and will bring significant experience and wise counsel to this role.

Congratulations to Olivia Lawrence, Stella Shen, Sienna Yeung, and Mischa Jadav who have achieved writing excellence for their work published in the Oz Kids in Print magazine.

A message from Mrs Tracy Reid – Year 3 Coordinator

Year 3 travelled by bus to the Australian Maritime Museum as part of our History unit on first contacts. We explored a replica of the Endeavour, walked through the museum, and visited other ships, including those linked to explorers and the spice trade. We learnt about Indigenous perspectives, studied maps used by early explorers, saw life size models and fascinating artefacts, participated in hands-on activities and discovered more about sustainability practices. Our favourite activity was going on the Endeavour and appreciating how difficult it must have been for the sailors. It was an enjoyable and engaging experience for everyone!

2025 Compass Classes

As we come to the end of the year, we understand that change can sometimes be challenging for children, and this can bring a mix of excitement and uncertainty. To alleviate this uncertainty across the holiday break, on Friday 29 November, your daughter will learn who her Compass class teacher will be for 2025. They will then have the opportunity to meet their new teacher and Compass class.

Compass class placements for 2025 have been carefully considered by our teaching staff and many factors are taken into account to ensure that every girl is placed into an environment that supports her individual learning and development. While we are aware that both parents and students may have preferences, we ask for your trust and understanding in this process. Some ways you can support your daughter to feel comfortable and confident with her new class include:

  • Staying positive: encouraging your daughter by highlighting positive aspects of meeting new people. This can greatly influence how your daughter feels about the transition.
  • Reassuring her: if your daughter feels concerned about the change, reassure her that these feelings are normal. Remind her how she has successfully navigated new classes and changes in the past and the benefits of these experiences.
  • Communicate openly: allow your daughter the opportunity to share how she is feeling and help her to process their emotions without judgement.
  • Organise play dates with classmates in the new classes over the break where possible.

We will now liaise with the Junior School Parent Group Year Co-ordinators for 2025 to set up new communication groups.

Unstructured Play

Thank you for those families who have already offered some items for our unstructured play sessions. We would still love donations of any of the following items:

  • Ropes
  • Large cardboard boxes (for example boxes that would fit whitegoods such as fridges)
  • Large clean plastic tubs/drums
  • Pipes (plastic, PVC or cardboard)
  • Hammocks (or sheets that can be used to make hammocks)
  • Plastic crates
  • cones
  • Barrels

Please let me know if you have any of these items that you may be able to provide.

204 for 2024 Service Initiative – A message from Kindness Club

This term Kindness Club are leading a final Kindness Challenge for the year – 204 for 2024! So far we have collected over 150 items for Westmead Hospital and the Rev Bill Crews Foundation so we are over half way to our goal!

We are asking all girls in Kindergarten to Year 6 to bring in either a new picture/board book or a Christmas gift or food item to Hedgehog House by the end of term and it will be then delivered in time for Christmas. It would be great to see if we could get 204 books and 204 gifts and food items!

Please help us with the 204 for 2024 challenge this year and let’s support these two great initiatives. Should you have any questions, please email kgiles@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au

Thank you, From Trisha Viswanathan, Riya Iyer, Chloe Morrison, Melody Chen & Safina Burgess, Year 6

Year 4 Training Band on Their Graduation!

This term, we are delighted to celebrate the graduation of 50 talented students from the Year 4 Training Band. Their musical journey over the year has been one of growth, hard work and joyful discovery. From learning the fundamentals of their instruments to performing as a cohesive ensemble, these young musicians have achieved so much and should be immensely proud of their accomplishments.

A heartfelt thank you goes to their dedicated teachers, Ms. Zeltzer, Miss Farlow, and Miss Ashton. Your guidance, expertise and encouragement have played a vital role in nurturing the students’ love for music and supporting their development as instrumentalists.

We look forward to seeing many of you continue your musical journey as you explore new opportunities in the College’s co-curricular music program. Keep playing, keep practising, and most importantly, keep enjoying the magic of making music.

PJ Factor Finale

Last Friday, students in Year 3 to 6 were treated to a spectacular showcase of creativity and talent at the PJ Factor Finals. Finalists performed in front of an enthusiastic audience, showcasing their skills across music, drama and dance.

We look forward to our final Speech Day ceremony next Wednesday and hope that you can join us in acknowledging all students for their investment in life at the College across 2024. This annual event will also be an opportunity to celebrate over 100 individual Middle School students who will be formally recognised as award recipients. If your daughter is receiving an award, you will be notified by email.

Congratulations to Wendy Wei (Year 7) on receiving receiving first place in the Year 7 category for the Transurban Art Prize! Read her recount of the art ceremony below:

The Transurban Art Ceremony felt unreal! The atmosphere was so lively, where students from all sorts of schools came together to celebrate each other and celebrate their achievements in art. I was so lucky to get first place in the Year 7 Category with my artwork called ’50 cent Flower’.

The flower, a Rhizanthella Gardneri, and the Pheidole ant are both critically endangered due to habitat loss. The artwork is to show the connection between the two and to emphasise the beauty of our environment that is being destroyed. This spreads awareness to persuade people to protect the Earth and keep it thriving. Again, I am so very grateful to take part in this ceremony.

A message from Victoria Harrison, Head of Upper School

It has been great to welcome Year 10 back from their Outdoor Education Program (OEP) adventures. Next week, we will share student reflections about their experiences. Sending big groups of students across the state for epic outdoor education experiences takes an enormous amount of planning to ensure we offer our students safe and rewarding trips. We couldn’t do this without the collaborative effort of the Pymble OEP and Upper School team. Thank you!

We are also grateful for the wonderful team of people who accompanied the girls last week. We appreciate the time you committed away from home to allow the girls to learn and grow outside the classroom.

Thank you to Peter Fogale, Candice Cooper, Gabby Zolezzi, Jamie Batten, Julia Squires, Emma Fryar, Rebecca Brown, Taylor Zeeman, Ryan Stewart, Alan Rome, Rowell Morales, Jack Routledge, Faye Crouch, Jackson Brown, Chris Eckford, Fliss Burgess, Tyla Riley, Lily Hoang, Winnie Jian, Joyce Lim, Felicity Gray, Myvanwy Carr, Mariel Lombard and Nick Wilkesmann.

In their final full week in Upper School, we collaborated with the Futures department to design a busy few days for Year 10 to culminate their time in the Upper School and to get their mind thinking about what is to come.

A range of workshops were offered by senior staff and industry professionals to help the girls prepare for the opportunities and challenges that they may have in Senior School and to also give the girls insights into the working world. Workshops and keynotes included:

  • Future of work – your skills are transferable
  • Using your Strengths to help prepare for interviews
  • Career conversations
  • Balancing the Busyness
  • Future opportunities – Sony Camp, Gap & Leadership
  • Authentically You: Building Your Personal Brand
  • Industry workshops
  • Preparing for the Perfect Interview
  • The Science of Wellbeing: Understanding Happiness
  • Moving Up the Ladder: From Junior to Senior Roles
  • Developing Your Portfolio: Work and Overseas Experiences
  • Using AI effectively when promoting yourself in applications

Our first leadership workshop for our 2025 leaders was held this week for our Peer Support Leaders. These Year 9 students are key role models for our incoming Year 7 students and we hope that the peer support training facilitated by Burn Bright has helped to upskill them for this important role. The girls spent the morning playing games, sharing stories, learning activities they can use to break the ice, and considering what actions an approachable and caring peer support leader might embody. We look forward to seeing them develop fun and engaging sessions in the new school year.

Marine and Aquaculture Technology

Year 9 Marine and Aquaculture Technology students have been learning about sustainable seafood this term. In conjunction with learning about the fragility of our marine ecosystems, our students are also more aware of the part they play as seafood consumers. We have also had a few opportunities to put those skills into action during some seafood practical lessons.

Our students were also lucky enough to have Tom Rolfe (from McKenzie’s Meats in Turramurra) share a few dozen of Narooma’s stunning oysters with our students, giving them all some insight into the industry, along with a taste if they were willing.

I am pleased to see so many of the girls using their prep/study lessons effectively to manage their time. It’s great to witness their dedication as they work through their first round of assessment tasks. These will provide an important opportunity to gain valuable feedback on their progress across subjects, and the skills they are developing in managing their workload will serve them well next year.

As we move into the warmer months, I’d like to remind everyone to prioritise their wellbeing – getting enough sleep, staying hydrated and avoiding excessive sun exposure will help ensure they stay healthy and focused.

Year 5 Buddy Christmas Celebration

Senior School celebrated a heartwarming Christmas event with our Year 5 students, marking the end of a wonderful year-long buddy program. Over the course of the year, our girls have formed strong friendships, and this special Christmas gathering was the perfect way to celebrate their bond.

The day was filled with festive cheer, starting with a special Christmas story shared by Rev Danielle. Lizzie also delighted us with a rocking Christmas song that set the perfect tone for the celebrations.

In addition to the Christmas activities, we also offered opportunities for reflection on the year ahead, ensuring that all students felt included in the spirit of the season. Whether through colouring cards, writing letters to Santa or creating festive decorations, the activities allowed everyone to celebrate in their own way and look forward to the new year with excitement and positivity.

A huge thank you to Josie, Alice, Lily and Abby for their hard work in preparing the activities and organising this memorable event. Your dedication made this celebration extra special for everyone involved.

The relationships formed through the buddy program will continue into next year, providing further opportunities for the girls to strengthen their friendships and share experiences.

It was a wonderful way to conclude the buddy program for this year, leaving our Year 5 students with lasting memories, deeper connections, and a sense of joy as we look ahead to the new year.

Year 12 Hospitality – Doing the Coffee Rounds!

Over the course of this term, the year 12 Hospitality cohort have been participating ‘service periods’ designed to mimic a real Hospitality environment. We have been thoroughly enjoying taking orders, making espresso coffee and providing ‘Service with a Smile’ to our staff! Overall, we have loved this learning experience and having the opportunity to put our knowledge into practice  – we have found it particularly fun to connect with our teachers by making them coffee whilst developing a skill that will prove useful once we leave school!

From the Boarding School

From the Boarding School

It has been a busy week with our Christmas festivities well underway. Last Friday, we enjoyed the company of our boarding neighbours from Knox Grammar School at our annual Christmas Trivia night. It was a fun night and the perfect lead up to our very own Christmas celebration on Tuesday night. This evening started with a beautiful Chapel service, followed by Christmas feast and dancing.

A real highlight was the Year 12 nativity play directed by our Avonmoore Prefect, Alice and performed by all our Year 12 Boarders. It was a fun and beautiful way to bring the retelling of the birth of Jesus to life for our Boarding family and I look forward to this becoming a special tradition for our Christmas celebrations.

As part of our service, Head Boarders Celeste and Sophie recognised the many people who work so hard to make Pymble Boarding so special. I am sharing their speech below for your enjoyment.

Welcome everyone to our end-of-year Christmas chapel service. We’d like to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Hadwen, Ms Rockwell, Heads of Schools, Heads of Years and the Heads of Houses. We’d also like to welcome Laurel, Rev Danielle, Rev Cass, Rev Karen, and Mrs O’Brien, and all of our guests. We really do appreciate you being here tonight and involving yourselves so wholeheartedly in our Boarding community – it means a lot to us. Everyone, you’ve made it to the end of 2024, and that’s something to be proud of. Let’s give ourselves a round of applause!

2024 sure was an exciting year! We started off with the Community Weekend at Raging Waters, which is always lots of fun, although we are all still waiting for Mrs Burgess to go on ‘The Drop’ with us like she promised in Year 7! Then, we had the swimming carnival where the Boarders, obviously dominated… beating the Day girls in the relay. Next was our fierce and ferocious Just Dance night where, not surprisingly, the Year 11s, now Year 12s took out the title. And then of course the Year 7 to 9 social, where we heard there was a lot of success with many new snapchats being added.

We then had Boarders’ Week, with some wins and a couple of losses, but we’ll look ahead to 2025. We also had our fair share of late nights thanks to fire alarms and running in the rain, which really wasn’t great for the fake tan!

And how can we forget, the shift into vertical boarding – a change that has brought our Pymble community closer together, truly emphasising that Boarding is the heart of the college and a family everyone wants to be a part of.

We’ve also seen the induction of our new Leadership teams for 2025 – the Year 12 Boarding Prefects, Spirit House Captains, and the Boarders Representative Council. Congratulations to you all. We know you’ll do amazing things, and we’re excited to see how we can support you in achieving everything you set out to do next year.

We could’ve made our slogan, 2024, the Year of Avonmoore – because this year the first ever round of Year 7s brought it to life. Even though the house is the newest thing you’ll ever see, it’s like they’ve always been there, and I’m sure you Year 7s are feeling much older and more mature to move into Marden or Goodlet next year.  And as for us Year 12s, we’re currently settling into Lang House and excited for this new chapter in Boarding.

There’s so much work that goes into making Pymble such an amazing home for us. So, on behalf of all the Boarders, we’d like to say a special thank you to Mrs. Burgess, Ms Mimmo, Ms Ayling, Kate, Danielle, Mardi, Dan, and all the casual staff. You all make such an impact on each Boarder’s unique experience here at Pymble, and your unwavering dedication to the Boarding family at Pymble does not go unnoticed. We truly appreciate everything you do for us.

As this year comes to an end, let’s take a moment to reflect on what we’re most proud of. Maybe you made it to the grand final in your sport, or perhaps you made a new friend this year. Or maybe it’s something like you’ve been making a conscious effort to find joy and gratitude in everyday life. Maybe you finally learnt where the house has good wifi! Whatever it is, give yourself a pat on the back for what you’ve accomplished.

We also want to thank the chefs, kitchen staff, the cleaners, the Healthcare team, the gardeners, and all those behind the scenes – IT, facilities, and everyone who makes sure our packages get delivered, we all know the boarders love an online shop! Your hard work ensures everything runs smoothly, and we are so very grateful for you all.

Lastly, congratulations to anyone who’s won some sort of award this year. But more importantly, thank you to the people whose kindness and integrity sometimes unnoticed. Whether you’re a Boarder, or member of staff. Maybe you helped set something up, kept the kitchen clean, maybe you dropped everything one day to support someone who really needed it. We want to remind you that these small acts make a huge difference, and they all add up and make boarding school a better place. So keep doing these things, even if no one sees them, because you’re putting good things into the world. And that’s what Pymble does.

As we approach the holidays, we want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. This year has been massive and we are so proud of everyone’s efforts in making it so successful. As Mrs Burgess says, Boarder’s rule the school and we are the best. This year we sure have proven that! With this in mind we are super excited to see what next year holds and we are confident that it can be even better than this one.

Have a great holiday and all the best,

Celeste and Sophie

Our Term 4 Pink Ladies – by our Head Boarders Sophie and Celeste

Pink Ladies are special people in the lives of our Boarders who go out of their way to make our time in Boarding easier, happier and much more connected.

This term we would like to recognise the wonderful Naito family: Mika, Mie and their amazing parents, who have consistently offered their help towards giving Boarders lifts to sport. Whether it’s for rowing, rugby sevens or more.

The Naitos are generous to the Boarding community and ensure that people get to where they need to go. They are kind and treat us Boarders like part of their family. We hope you understand the immense impact your efforts have on our Boarding community.

We would also like to acknowledge a wonderful member of our Pymble staff. If you’ve ever been in the Boarders’ Dining Room, you might have seen this man. When you see him, he immediately yells out, “Hey, girl!” He is like a ray of sunshine in the Pymble Boarding community. Yes, it’s Gary!

Gary has the very important job of serving the food, but most importantly, he serves. Period. Gary, you have a gift for turning a hall into a home, and you bring so much value to Pymble Boarding. So for this, we couldn’t have thought of a better person to pick!

The Margaret Brooke ‘Brooksie’ Award

The Margaret Brooke Award, also known as the ‘Brooksie’, is awarded in the final chapel service at the end of each term to a Boarder who exemplifies the spirit of a tenacious, courageous, compassionate and giving woman. This was an easy decision, and our Head of Marden House, Beth Ayling shares, Addison (Addi) of Year 10 is a most worthy recipient.

Addi is been a shining example of the values celebrated by the Brooksie Award. As this term’s recipient, she truly embodies its spirit through her caring, considerate and joyful nature. Addi is someone who consistently demonstrates integrity and responsibility in everything she does, whether it’s in her academic work, co-curricular activities or interactions with others. She approaches everything she does with a sense of tenacity and excitement.

Addi is a loyal and caring friend. She will always put her hand up to help anyone who needs it. She is inclusive, kind, thoughtful and empathetic. She cares about others and tries hard to put herself in their shoes so she can understand and relate to them on a deeper level. Addi ensures everyone feels welcome and inspires those around her with her unwavering kindness and selflessness, making her a universally beloved and admired member of the Pymble Boarding family.

Addi has an infectious sense of humour. She never takes herself too seriously, and she is always up for a chat and a laugh. Her natural warmth and magnetic personality mean others naturally gravitate towards her to enjoy her company.

Addi displays ‘Pymble Pride’ in all that she does. She consistently wears her uniform beautifully; she ensures that she is organised and punctual and keeps her living space tidy. She will always put her hand up to volunteer for opportunities that present themselves and is willing to challenge herself by stepping out of her comfort zone.

Addison has truly been a gift to the Pymble community since the day she joined us in Year 7 and we are beyond proud to call her one of our Boarders.

Live It, Love It, Learn It – Ms Theresa Mimmo, Deputy Director of Boarding

All Boarders came adorned in Christmas spirit last Friday as they enjoyed a ‘build your own burger’ dinner and trivia on Marden Lawn with Knox Boarders. Evie and Jemma, supported by their Year 12 counterparts, were enthusiastic in their running of the event and encouragement of others. Year 12 took out the prize for the best dressed Boarders; their costumes were well thought out and in the spirit of the evening. Winners were grinners as the team named “Year 10 PLC” took out the win and a chocolate prize. After trivia, all Boarders enjoyed a ‘Just Dance’ session. All Boarders participated in copying the dance moves from the screen to their favourite songs. There was lots of laughter and fun for everyone, including staff.

Boarders also enjoyed a Christmas shopping trip on Thursday evening to purchase Christmas gifts for staff on behalf of all Boarders. Staff were appreciative of their gifts and the thoughtful messages that were written by the girls on Christmas cards. With the warmer weather the pool was available and there was a beach trip to Clareville on Sunday which was a welcome relief from the heat.

This weekend, Year 9 is heading out on Friday night for a picnic at Balmoral beach. Year 12 Boarders have the opportunity on Saturday to learn about beach safety at Newport. Saturday afternoon, we can head into town to view the David Jones Christmas windows and surrounding decorations that are displayed. On Sunday, The King’s School has invited different schools to attend a sports day which promises to be a lot of fun.

View From My Window

Hi! My name is Isabelle, and I’m from Indonesia, a vibrant country made up of thousands of islands. I split my time between Jakarta, where my mother lives, and Bali, where my father resides.

At home, I have two adorable Shih Tzus named Pipin and Donut, and I’m the youngest of three sisters, both of whom live and study in Sydney. In Jakarta, I’m surrounded by towering skyscrapers and a bustling city life, while in Bali, I’m treated to breathtaking sunsets right from my window or the rice fields next to my villa.

What I cherish most about both homes are my wonderful friends, my dogs, and the amazing experiences Indonesia offers—like relaxing Balinese massages, stunning sunsets, and the warm-hearted people. One of my favourite activities in Jakarta is taking night drives around the city with friends, while in Bali, I love biking during sunset and feeling the refreshing breeze on my face.

Being back at Boarding gives me a sense of productivity and focus; the academic environment really helps me concentrate on my studies. No matter where I am, my heart is always connected to my homes, where every moment is filled with love and happiness.

Save the Date

Wednesday 4 December – Speech Day followed by Boarders’ Travel afternoon.

Please also make a special note of our 2025 dates, in particular note the dates highlighted in pink. These include Community Days and important safety sessions that all Boarders are required to attend.

From the Chaplains

From the Chaplains

“Music expresses that which cannot be said and that on which it is impossible to be silent.”

Victor Hugo

Thanks to a grant from the Ex-Students’ Union, this year the Chaplains have been able to engage an artist-in-residence to help strengthen and rejuvenate the music and singing in chapel services across the College, with a particular focus on the Middle School.

Singing together is a powerful way to unite our student community, to build an experience of Belonging into every week and to offer students (and staff) the gift of spiritual joy and refreshment that comes from worshipping together.

Tash Holmes, the Director of Uniting Creative, to come and collaborate with the Pymble chaplains; to teach the students some new songs, to bring some fresh energy, enthusiasm and expertise and to open the way for collaborative opportunities with other creatives, such as David Gungor, who visited us on 8 November.

Tash Holmes, Director of Uniting Creative

Uniting Creative is a network that seeks to inspire and equip emerging creative leaders and artists to enhance the ministry and mission of local congregations within the Uniting Church Synod of NSW & ACT.

This is what Tash says about the power of singing together, and the ability for music to move us, heal us and allow us to connect with the One beyond ourselves:

“When we pause and welcome the Spirit to move …. we let music transcend language and touch the heart. It can be so healing and uplifting, and I see this over and over as we gather, the deepening of our connection with the Divine.

In moments of grief, celebration, or spiritual longing, the act of singing together can offer healing and restoration. It creates a space for individuals to express what might otherwise be difficult to put into words, enabling them to find comfort and solace in the collective voice. This communal act of singing has a therapeutic quality—whether through familiar hymns that offer comfort, or new songs that speak directly to the struggles and joys of contemporary life.”

This year, Tash started to visit Pymble and to teach the students some new songs, from Uniting Creative’s beautiful 2023 album, ‘Transforming Spirit’. You can listen to the album here.

The students particularly loved ‘All of This is Us’, with its stirring chorus and beautiful, inclusive lyrics, and we have subsequently taught the song to Upper School and Senior School as well.

Here’s a video of the Uniting Creative team singing it, and a video of Pymble students singing it.

Tash Holmes teaching us her song ‘All of This is Us’

What’s next?

In Term 1 2025, the plan is to launch a series of songwriting workshops facilitated by Tash for interested Secondary students, with the support of the Chaplains.

Students will workshop, compose and rehearse songs with Tash, bringing their fresh new songs and ideas into their weekly Chapel services.

Pymble students may even have the opportunity to collaborate and sing on Uniting Creative’s next album!

Another hope is that Tash will be able to inspire and guide other students who would like to serve their community by being part of a Chapel Band.

Middle School students singing with Tash in Chapel

Through Tash Holmes, Pymble had a rare opportunity to engage with internationally recognised musician and songwriter, David Gungor, on Nov 8 2024.

‘The Mindful Bard’ Interview with Dave Gungor

David lives in New York City and tours the world leading workshops in songwriting and creativity. He is particularly gifted at building community, empathy, compassion and healing through communal singing.

On the day of his visit, Dave performed a lunchtime concert on Gloucester Lawn. His beautiful voice and guitar strumming wafted across the campus, drawing staff and students to come and sit in the shade and listen. The music was poignant, reflective and calming.

After the concert, Tash and Dave joined us for our weekly Middle School Chapel service.

The singing nearly lifted the roof off the chapel and for me, this was a moment of pure joy.

David answered some questions from the Chapel Captains, sharing his insights about the deep spiritual connection between music, singing and faith. He talked about how he has used singing as a way to bind people together and to overcome differences in places of conflict and tension, such as in the Holy Land, where he has facilitated workshops and collaboration between Muslims, Jews and Christians.

Q&A With David Gungor

Dave then sang some songs for us, but instead of this being a performance that was about him, he explained the meaning of each song and taught us the chorus. Then, we were all able to sing each song together.

Video of students singing ‘I wanna see the love’ with Dave

Another chorus we learned went like this:

When I look into the eyes of my enemy

I see my brother, I see my brother

When I look into the eyes of my enemy

I see my sister, I see my sister

Drawing on Jesus’ radical teaching to “love your enemy”,[1] Dave’s song gently introduced this idea into our communal experience: that even the people we see as our adversaries, as Other, as NLM (Not Like Me) … they too are our brothers and our sisters. They too are made in the precious image of God.

The tenderness and powerful feeling of unity in the room was palpable as the students sang these lines.

Tash Holmes, David Gungor, Chaplain Rev Cass Blake and Assistant Chaplain Edwina O’Brien

This is why I am so passionate about revitalising the singing in chapel services, and about bringing students’ voices, choices and ideas into this space – because worship songs work on a spiritual level and they can powerfully shape, challenge and change us.

God speaks through community.

Singing together can create harmony where there was division; understanding where there was argument. Worshipping together builds character and community. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that worship and singing, as a regular practice, (gradually) bring enlightenment.

Singing unites us with other people; it builds community. It literally allows us to hear other people’s voices. In this, it reminds us that Others are Like Us and that we are not alone. Singing powerful songs together about the experience of being human but made in the image of God and fully loved by God teaches us on a subconscious level that we are not alone on this journey we call life.

It joins us with the Other.

The words we sing matter. They can shape and inspire us spiritually.

We look forward to welcoming many Pymble families to the College Christmas Celebration this Sunday 1 December.

I pray that we as a community can continue to remember in our prayers those who are suffering in conflict and war this Christmas season, and those who are struggling to put food on the table.

If you would like to help, please send donations of non-perishable food in to school for the Bill Crews Foundation food collection. Thank you so much to those who have already donated.

This year, you may also like to buy your loved ones a gift that makes a huge difference – here is the 2024 ‘Everything in Common’ Gift Catalogue from the Uniting Church.

Year 10 Future You Festival

With support from the Upper School, the Futures Department are proud to share with you the program of events for the 2025 Future You Festival. You can view the program here.

This large scale event is the culmination of the Futures program for Year 10, preparing them with skills and knowledge to start planning for their post school pathways.

Each student in Year 10 will finish the year with a Cliftons Strengths Top 5 Report. This helps them to identify and use their strengths for:

  • Self-Awareness: Identify your natural talents and use this knowledge to build confidence, focus on your strengths, and achieve personal growth.
  • Career Success: Align strengths with career or academic goals to improve performance and satisfaction. For example, strengths like Achiever can drive productivity, while Learner supports thriving in growth-focused environments.
  • Effective Relationships: Use strengths to work effectively with others. For example, Harmony fosters collaboration, Empathy builds understanding, and Strategic helps in leadership and problem-solving. These strengths can enhance teamwork and communication in any setting.

Thank you to our keynote speakers, workshop facilitators, alumni, industry representatives, parents and staff who engaged in the program to allow us to deliver it to the year group.

A special thanks to the Future You Festival committee led by Katrina O’Kelly and Paula Cansick from the Futures Department and supported by the wonderful Upper School team, our marvellously talented Graphic Design Manager, Rachel Fairbairn and the amazing Facilities team for bringing this event to the students.

Look out our for article next week, where we will provide a wrap up of the program from a student perspective.

Basketball

On Saturday 23 November, our Junior School Lauren Jackson Academy students had the incredible experience of learning from Australian basketball legend Lauren Jackson herself.

The afternoon was actioned packed with drills and skills aimed to both challenge and engage the girls. With the guidance of Lauren, students began with skills focusing on shooting technique, offensive transition, ball handling, and footwork. Following this, students had the opportunity to apply their skills into full court matches. Lauren was with the students providing feedback along the way.

Lauren Jackson, with her vast experience and passion for not only basketball but sport, shared invaluable tips and techniques, teaching our students how to refine their skills as well as develop a resilient mindset both on and off the court. Lauren spoke with the girls about the importance of winning and losing and the teaching moments that can be gained for those experiences. Lauren took the time at the end of the session to answer questions and share some guidance. She emphasised the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and having fun which resonated with all students and staff at the session.

Well done to all students who attended and showed Lauren how far their skills have developed since the beginning of the program.

IPSHA Basketball Round 6 – Saturday 23 November

Round 6 of IPSHA basketball saw all Pymble teams showcase basketball IQ improvement and dedication to developing their skills on the court. Their hard work during training sessions was evident on the court this weekend with each team’s decision-making skills and aggression with the ball.

What truly sets our Pymble teams apart from the rest is the team spirit and teamwork that every single player demonstrates, from cheering on their teammates in other teams to supporting each other on the court.

Teams of the week: All Years 3 to 6 IPSHA Basketball

Congratulations to all Years 3 to 6 IPSHA basketball students who have demonstrated across the entire term what it means to be part of a team and to challenge themselves to develop their skills. With one week of IPSHA basketball left, we look forward to one final round of energy, excitement and fantastic basketball.

Northern Schools Cup

Last Friday our Pymble Cricket team took on Abbotsleigh in Round 2 of the Northern Schools Cup. We won the toss and elected to bat. Notable mentions to the following girls who top scored: Harriet Gregory (Year 8), Chloë Lenane (Year 7), Arushi Singh (Year 8), and Miesha Gal (Year 8). After the 20 overs, Pymble finished with a defendable total of 60 runs.

Aaleyah Bookless (Year 8) and Chloë Lenane (Year 7) initiated the bowling attack for Pymble against a strong Abbotsleigh opening partnership. Both bowlers had the batters on the back foot resulting in our first wicket from Aaleyah with a clean middle stump dismissal.

Unfortunately, despite some solid bowling from Harriet Gregory (Year 8), Arushi Singh (Year 8) and Miesha Gal (Year 8) from that point onwards, Abbotsleigh were too strong with bat in hand. Reaching our total with nine overs to spare.

A big thank you to all girls for competing this term and an even bigger thank you to Annabel Taylor (Year 9) who played her first match ever! As well as our last-minute recruits Aarushi Singh (Year 8) and Japmehar Bhatia (Year 8) who performed exceptionally.

Volleyball Week 6

Round 6 of the 2024 Santa Sabina Invitational Volleyball Competition took place this past Saturday.

Our three senior teams went undefeated at Santa Sabina. Pymble 1’s result puts them into the grand final of the Senior 1st Division. A win against Schols in the final will see our Senior Firsts win the competition for a third year in a row. Pymble 3’s win keeps them top of the table in the Year 10 Division, and Pymble 2’s fantastic win against PLC Sydney puts them in third place in what is a strong division. Pymble 4’s win gives them a slight chance of winning the Junior 1st Division, but are needing results to go their way this coming Saturday. Pymble 5 still sit top of the ladder in their division, knowing a win will secure them the title. Pymble 6’s semi-final loss means they miss out on winning the Year 8 division, but still have a chance of finishing with a bronze medal. Despite a loss for Pymble 7, a win this coming Saturday could jump them as high as third.

Best of luck to all our teams for their last round of matches!

Senior Firsts report from our Volleyball Captain, Chloe Gu (Year 11)

This week, Pymble 1victoried over Danebank in the Senior Division 1 semifinals. The first set was easily won, with 25:8, however in the second set, our team was a bit complacent and only won the set with 25:19.

There was obvious improvement in our team’s performance, including our hustling. We have gotten used to the sun in these six weeks and serving was much more consistent. The passing was also better, and even if there were overpasses, our back court players managed to cover and keep them in play.

Finals against St. Scholastica College will be tough next week, since they have taken a set off us before and we are losing players, but if we continue to play like this week, I am sure we are able to get gold.

Round 5 and 6 igsa Results

Throughout Round 5 and 6, our Pymble Water Polo teams faced fierce competition but they never backed down. Each game was an opportunity to improve, adapt, and push past the limits of what they thought was possible. Whether it was a nail-biting win or a tough loss, our players showed resilience, learning from every challenge and coming back stronger.

As the season heads into its final stretch, we’ve seen incredible growth not just in skill, but in the heart of the teams. The commitment to leaving everything in the pool, the hunger for success, and the love for the game is what has carried all team to new heights.

We wish all teams the best of luck in the final games of the season this weekend!

First Tech Challenge (FTC) Sydney Qualifier

This past Sunday, Pymble proudly hosted the FTC Sydney Qualifier, welcoming 24 teams from across the region for a thrilling day of robotics competition. Among them were three Pymble teams – 18360 Pymble Plions, 18359 Pymble Lion Cubs, and 23636 Pymble Pterojazama Party Sharks – who represented the College with determination, resilience and enthusiasm.

Hosting an event of this scale was no small feat, requiring an immense team effort. Volunteers gave up their Sunday to assist, and our robotics students worked tirelessly to ensure the event ran smoothly. They set up and dismantled fields, coordinated teams, managed logistics and supported participants with energy and professionalism, showcasing the very best of Pymble.

A special thanks to Mr. Becker, whose dedication and leadership made this event possible despite his many other commitments. His support and effort were instrumental in ensuring the competition’s success, and we are deeply grateful.

For our students, the Sydney Qualifier followed the lessons learned at the Wollongong event the previous week. Each team returned with a focus on improvement, showcasing incredible growth and persistence in their preparation and performance.

  • Team 18360 Pymble Plions approached the competition with confidence and determination, building on their experience in Wollongong. Their matches highlighted their grit, culminating in a hard-fought run to the final match, where they were narrowly defeated by the top alliance. Their incredible performance earned them a well-deserved spot at Nationals.
  • Team 18359 Pymble Lion Cubs, despite being one of the youngest teams competing, demonstrated exceptional focus and teamwork. They refined their intake mechanism and practiced driving tirelessly, leading to faster scoring and a sixth overall ranking. Advancing to the semifinals, they impressed judges with their creativity and were awarded the Innovate Award (First Place), securing their place at Nationals.
  • Team 23636 Pymble Pterojazama Party Sharks showcased their commitment to improvement by designing and building a new intake system within a week of the Wollongong event. Their efforts were rewarded with the Think Award (Second Place), a recognition of their continuous innovation and determination, earning them a Nationals qualification.

Each Pymble team faced unique challenges but rose to the occasion with perseverance, adaptability, and team spirit. Judges were impressed not only by their technical abilities but by their resilience and growth.

Hosting the Sydney Qualifier was an honour and a significant achievement for Pymble’s Robotics community. We are immensely proud of our students, staff, and volunteers who made the event a success, and we look forward to cheering on our talented teams as they compete at Nationals in December. The future of robotics at Pymble is brighter than ever!

Please consider donating to our Christmas Appeal

Please consider donating to our Christmas Appeal

The Christmas Story reminds us of the importance of giving to the most vulnerable. The first Christmas gifts were given by the Magi to the newborn Christ Child and his family. This family desperately needed these gifts. They had already been forcibly relocated from their homes by the government. Shortly after receiving the gift they were forced to flee from this new home. Jesus spent his early years as a refugee in a foreign land. The gifts of the Mag together with the kindness of a community of strangers in that foreign land ensured that the baby Jesus grew into someone who changed the world.

For many years Pymble has supported the work of Rev. Bill Crews Foundation (formally The Exodus Foundation) at Christmas through the donation of non-perishable food items, personal care essentials and gifts. These essential and simple donations are used by the foundation for those most in need. The difference that these small gifts make those receiving them cannot be over-emphasised. Donating gifts is simple way that we, as the Pymblecommunity, can bring hope and joy at Christmas to people we will never meet, but know matter in our community, because everyone matters. Through your support you can give the gift of a smile to the face of a child and family who are scared, worried and hungry. And who knows what this might do into the future? It is very possible, that these simple gifts, like the gifts of the Magi to the Holy family can change the world.

Donations can be drop off any time from now until Wednesday 4 December 2024.

Collections points can be found at:
