Whether you love, loathe or feel indifferent to Barbie, it’s hard to ignore her recent success. Barbie the movie has just made box office history by topping US $1bn in global sales in two weeks and breaking a record for female directors in the process. With a marketing budget reportedly bigger than its entire production budget, the movie is highly visible and highly likely to entice many of the girls and women in our community into the cinema to see what it’s all about. So, when a group of super-excited Year 8 girls emailed me about seeing the movie and holding a Barbie-themed assembly, it struck me as a great opportunity to connect with our young people, reflect on the messages we can take from the film, and align these messages with our vision for students at Pymble.

It’s an understatement to say, hosting this assembly was not a decision made lightly. To be honest, I was mildly terrified about the negative feedback the College might receive for channelling a divisive pop culture icon to talk about the incredibly important topic of belonging versus fitting in. It took an enormous dose of courage to get into that hot pink suit on Tuesday and speak to a sea of faces – some gleefully engaged, others not so much – but getting out of your comfort zone is what we encourage our girls to do, and so I did.

For me, the Barbie movie represents girl power; it’s about being the very best version of ourselves, quirks and all. And the character that can teach us most about ourselves is not Stereotypical Barbie, looking perfectly poised in her Dreamhouse, it’s Weird Barbie, the dishevelled doll at the bottom of the toy box with her hair partially hacked off, legs akimbo and random Texta markings all over her face. Weird Barbie was played by the actor Kate McKinnon, who eloquently described her character as follows:

“Weird Barbie has sort of been relegated, sequestered, quarantined to this space, which is her weird house, a sort of freakish amalgam of shapes and colours that obviously is the manifestation of who she is in this world: the keeper of everyone’s hidden weirdness. It’s that journey of self-actualisation that every human being is on and is thwarted by these rigid gender roles and ideas of what we ought to be.”

The truth is, there’s a little bit of weirdness in each of us, and that’s also the great joy and beauty of humankind. We are all “startlingly or extraordinarily singular, odd” (the Macquarie Dictionary definition of weird) or, in other words, “the only one of the kind; unique” (the Macquarie Dictionary definition of singular).

Weird Barbie makes us think about the complexity of identifying as unique individuals who seek to belong and, in doing so, challenges our understanding of what it is to belong.

In her book Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead, researcher and author Brene Brown highlights a critical difference between belonging and fitting in, which I also shared with the girls:

“Fitting in is one of the greatest barriers to belonging. Fitting in is about assessing a situation and becoming who you need to be in order to be accepted. Belonging, on the other hand, doesn’t require us to change who we are; it requires us to be who we are.”

As our students grow and become who they are meant to be at Pymble, my hope is that each individual can be the truest version of themselves – their best Barbie, in keeping with our theme – and that they genuinely feel they belong here in our school family.

Each day, I hear from students who have the most amazing stories to share about their passion projects, how they are helping other people in the community, and the steps they are taking to chase their dreams. We see each person for the unique gifts and talents they bring to our Pymble family. We highlight their achievements as our sportswomen, academics, da Vinci Decathlon scholars, musicians, debators, dancers, artists or first-time performers in the Years 1 and 2 Showcase on Friday. Equally, we celebrate the student who finds the mettle to come to school when she really feels like curling up under the covers for the day, or the Year 6 girl who is already thinking ahead to next year and figuring out how to be the best Year 7 student she can be. Each student matters.

Feeling more than a bit weird in my hot pink Barbie suit, against a backdrop of hot pink streamers, balloons, glitter and a fabulous Barbie photo box whipped up for the occasion by our amazing Technology and Applied Studies HOLA, Mr Ellis, my take-home message for the girls was this:

Sometimes we don’t feel like we measure up to expectations.
Sometimes we stand out as a bit weird.
The sooner you understand that who you are is enough; that all the things that are quirky and weird about you also make you magnificent and wonderful; the sooner you will make your mark on the world, in a way that is meaningful to you.

Like happy memories of favourite toys, I hope this message stays with our girls for life.

Say hello to our HOLAs

This week, it is my pleasure to shine a light on our Head of Learning Area – Science, Mrs Kylie Cooley, who has been a valued member of our academic staff since 1998 – that’s 25 years! Mrs Cooley stepped into the HOLA position this year to lead the delivery of the following subjects at Pymble: Science, Marine and Aquaculture Technology, and Agriculture (for Years 7 to 10); Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, and Physics (for Years 11 and 12); and Investigating Science, and Science Extension (for Year 12). Mrs Cooley currently teaches Year 11 Earth and Environmental Science, and Year 12 Investigating Science.

Kylie, what was the ‘aha’ moment that led you into teaching?

“During my Honours year at university, my supervisor asked me if I could help in his palaeontology lab sessions and go on different field trips to assist the first, second and third year students. I loved it so much. Showing people amazing things and helping them discover the meaning to the patterns in nature was so much fun that I ended up doing a Diploma of Education after my Science degree.”

What is the most rewarding aspect of the work you do here?

“I love working with the students on the clues, patterns and logic they can use to help them understand the world around them. Watching someone have an ‘aha’ or ‘wow’ moment is really rewarding.”

What are you most proud of achieving as a Pymble HOLA?

“This is my first year in the HOLA role, so I am still learning the ropes; however, I am proud of many of the initiatives I have helped build within our amazing Science team during 25 years at Pymble. This includes embedding more ‘working scientifically’ skills in the Years 7 to 10 syllabus to better prepare students for Years 11 and 12. We are lucky to have a team that has the depth and breadth of expertise to continually innovate to improve student outcomes.”

Work aside, tell us a fun fact about you…

“I nearly studied Graphic Design instead of Science!”

Finish this sentence: If I could impart one life lesson to our students, it would be…

“Stay curious, ask questions and be grateful for the amazing opportunities you have been given.”

See you at the ball!

No, we’re not leaping from Barbie to Cinderella in one fell swoop. 😉 This is just a friendly reminder that tickets for our inaugural Pymble Foundation Ball go on sale Monday 14 August, via a notification sent on MyPymble, where you can also find out more about the fine dining, entertainment, dress code, auctions and raffles planned for the night. Tickets are limited, so make sure you secure your table if you don’t want to miss out. Thank you in advance for your support of our College, and our current and future generations of Pymble girls.

Play, in all its forms, is a powerful tool for learning, growth and self-discovery. Research evidences that outdoor play in nature is incredibly beneficial for young learners. Whether it’s exploring the wonders of the natural world, engaging in physical activities, or sitting more quietly and observing nature, these experiences foster a sense of curiosity, creativity, and a deeper connection to the environment and prior learning. Outdoor play also offers a change of pace from the routines of the classrooms and an opportunity to take risks and get muddy, all of which is important for our children as they develop and learn to be courageously independent, to make and own their mistakes and to embrace new friendships.

Playing a character is another important element in a child’s development and our Year 1 and 2 girls have been incredibly busy preparing for the Showcase performance this week. I look forward to celebrating that in next week’s newsletter.

Our K-2 girls are enjoying the wonders of play around the world, an initiative designed by our Performing Arts teacher, Ms Maria Lee and our K-2 teachers. The girls have enthusiastically embraced playing Catch the Dragon’s Tail a game from China, Korean hopscotch, Sun and Ice a game from North America. They have also created interpretations of dreamtime stories using wooden animals and learnt how to play Weme a traditional bowling game played for thousands of years by Indigenous communities.

Alongside this, we also recognise the importance of unstructured play which allows our older children to take risks and run more wildly outdoors. While it may seem counterintuitive, allowing children to take calculated and seemly ‘wild’ risks helps them develop resilience, problem-solving skills, and better judgment.  There are always rules, whether spoken or unspoken, when children play collaboratively, and this empowers them to negotiate with empathy and build confidence in their communication skills. Whilst this play is technically termed ‘unstructured play’, it is closely observed by our teachers as they assess the girls’ capacity to communicate and connect with others with compassion and a strong sense of self.

We are looking for new objects (‘loose parts’) to inspire the engineering thinking and play of our girls in Years 3-6. If you have any large cardboard boxes, pulley systems rope, old (clean) sheets, or other objects (eg plumbing pipes or even an old wooden boat) we would love to have them to inspire our girls’ learning through play.

Our Sporty Staff – inspiring our girls

Congratulations to Ms Charlotte Baker, PDHPE teacher whose team won the Masters hockey competition this year being undefeated in all their games.

A highlight of the year for our Kindergarten and Year 2 girls is the buddy program. The aim of this program is to build connections across the years which are then strengthened and continued during vertical House activities. The Kindergarten girls are buddied with a Year 2 student from the same House, and they spend time during Compass Directions lessons getting to know each other, playing games and doing a variety of different activities. This term they have enjoyed collaborating and connecting during our “Play around the world” sessions.

The Year 8 National Exchange Program begins this Sunday and continues into next week. We have 25 excited students participating in this reciprocal exchange with schools in Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne. Middle School looks forward to hosting our exchange sisters here in Sydney from Wednesday till Saturday. Thank you to the families who will be billeting the girls, we appreciate working in partnership with you to ensure this is a really positive experience that sees all involved stepping up to independence and embracing opportunities.

Barbie Combined Assembly

Riley Atkinson (Year 8), Skye MacLeod (Year 8), Gabriella Sheh(Year 8), Amelia Watson (Year 8) and Lucy Simpson (Year 8) supported our Be Your Best Barbie assembly this week after an opportunistic conversation with Dr Hadwen which led to the creation of the barbie themed event. The group shared their admiration for the movie and how it empowered them to be their true selves and accept others as they are. The message of empowerment was shared through their video interviewing students in Year 7 to 12 and teachers on what they took from the movie and thoughts on being our best selves. The assembly concluded with an inclusive energetic dance performed together with the whole school.

Happy Box Update

Many of our Middle School girls are continuing to actively contribute to the Happy Box Project service initiative that provides remote Indigenous girls with items they may not easily get access to. Alongside the sanitary items requested, we have crafted a variety of handmade gifts to send: fabric scrunchies, origami paper cranes, felt animals to name just a few. We are asking the girls who have committed to this project to please bring in the sanitary items in a plastic bag with their names clearly marked by tomorrow Friday 4 August. Our intention is to continue crafting on Wednesdays and Fridays across the term, culminating in packing the Happy Boxes into beautifully designed and printed calico bags for delivery over the next term break. We are encouraging the girls to log their Service hours and are signing off on many student record sheets each week. Great work girls!

It is never too late to get involved!! We would like to be able to send as many Happy Boxes as possible so please encourage your daughters to join the craft sessions and as importantly, to drop off any sanitary items to the Middle School office as soon as possible (all late items will be graciously accepted). We would love all our Middle School families to be involved.

Below, is a list of suggested items and a link to the organisation for your further information. Sanitary items: period pants, pads, tampons, roll on deodorant, sheet-face masks, soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, face cleanser, moisturiser, hand sanitiser, shower gel, face washer and heat packs.

Our Middle School girls came together, as part of Gloucester Gatherings to make friendship bracelets. It was lovely to see so many girls enjoying the sunshine.

Year 7 Transition Leadership positions have now been finalised and offers made to over 60 students. Such an overwhelming response that demonstrates the willingness of our girls to support their Pymble sisters. This role is an opportunity for the girls to work with our Year 6 Junior School students on a program to assist with their transition to high school. More information regarding this role and other formal leadership positions is available on the Leadership Website . In Term 3 we will be launching the full suite of leadership positions for 2024 and would like to encourage all girls to consider applying.

NSW Health will be running their final vaccination clinic on Thursday 17 August. Students will be receiving the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (dTpa) vaccine. Any Year 7 students or Year 8 students who have missed receiving the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, will have the opportunity to have a catch-up during this clinic. Students will only receive the vaccine if consent has been provided. If you would like your daughter to participate in the school vaccination program, you can provide online consent here. Year 7 students only will need to wear their sports uniform on this day.

Year 8 Outdoor Education

Year 8 Outdoor Education communications have been sent to parents on the Parent Portal. Please ensure you complete the consent forms by Friday 18 August. In Week 5 the girls will attend a presentation by Southbound detailing the experience. A message from Mr. Riley, Head of Upper School

We have been working hard on Pymble gives back in the Upper School this week with students helping at the Goodooga Indigenous Games and our Year 10 Music Elective Class performing for Easy Care Gardening’s 35th Anniversary High Tea. We have also been busy planning our Year 9 Service Days for Week 5 and share Ellie, Adelaide and Annabel’s reflections on their time helping St Edmund’s with their Athletics Carnival at Pymble late last week.

It was a pleasure to perform at the Easy-Care Gardening’s 35th anniversary high tea alongside my incredibly talented peers from the Year 10 Elective Music class. Boasting a richly diverse line-up of music, ranging from opera, to piano, clarinet, trumpet and a “The Greatest Showman” number, the senior members of our community watched in awe of the passion and dedication of students written clearly in their art. In attendance also included the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Ku-ring-gai Shire Council, as well as the State Member of Parliament who gave inspiring speeches and enjoyed the music provided by us. We are incredibly grateful to be given this opportunity to practice taking the stage but more importantly, to give back. This was all made possible through the support of our teacher Ms Zeltzer and Mrs Seymour who took such great care of us!

Written by Ella Liu (Year 10)

Last Tuesday, 20 Year 10’s and I had the wonderful pleasure of assisting the St. Edmund’s School with their exciting athletics carnival. Throughout the day, we engaged with multiple students and experienced an endless amount of laughter and happiness. Personally, I was in charge of presenting the First Place Ribbons to the runners. Seeing the students running their hearts out, crossing the line, and receiving a bright blue ribbon was extremely heart warming and wholesome. It certainly brightened my day! Also, seeing the effort and dedication they had to not only finish the race but to succeed in it, as well as sharing the moments of celebration with them, felt so rewarding and uplifting.  I would absolutely do this experience again and definitely recommend it to my Pymble peers to volunteer for any St Edmund’s activities!

Written by Adelaide Taylor (Year 10)

Last week, I had the privilege of volunteering for St Edmund’s during their athletics carnival. Interacting with the students while overseeing the agility course filled me with immense joy. The atmosphere was brimming with positivity as teachers and students displayed unwavering support throughout the day. This experience not only brought fun but also valuable lessons in effective communication and the power of support. Engaging with the students taught me the importance of inclusivity and lending a hand where needed. I am very grateful for this experience, which underscored the significance of fostering connections and spreading positivity within our community.

Written by Annabel Charnock (Year 10)

I was blessed with the opportunity to go to the Goodooga Games with five other Year 9 girls and experience Walgett, Goodooga and Brewarrina. Some of my most memorable moments includes: my time at St Joseph’s School; taking an Indigenous Language class and connecting with the children in Years 1 to 6 and making new friends along the way. Brewarrina Aboriginal Cultural Museum showed us the world’s oldest man-made structure… the fish traps! Everyone’s highlight was the Goodooga Games. With so many schools coming together, the disco included fun moments and bonding experiences. The Goodooga hot springs were a bonus for us to relax in after a long day of travel.

Written by Jahle Tez (Year 9)

Elsewhere our final exchange student, Fukoko, arrived to much fanfare this week from Japan, and in Language Arts, Jenny Xu (Year 9) progressed through to the next round of the Legacy competition!

Finally, in keeping with Dr H’s message of improved sleep for the term, I share an excellent resource developed by renowned speaker and past-Pymble parent Glen Gerryn. This might serve as the touch paper for an important dinner table conversation, perhaps for both students and parents if my sleep is anything to go by!

From the Senior School

Our Year 12 students continue to manage their Trial HSC examinations with good sense and a calm approach. I have witnessed some very thoughtful acts of caring for each other and supporting each other, in amongst the Year 12 students and also offered by their younger peers in Year 11. These acts of kindness from the students and staff do create a ripple effect, that is passed on to others, and helps to build a supportive culture in the Senior School.

We are all gathering great inspiration from our two amazing Australian women’s sports teams – World Champions in netball, and the sheer determination and skill of the Matildas. I have been chatting to some of the Senior students about these women, and the idea that the strongest message in their performances is the value of a high-functioning team, where all know their roles and leave nothing ‘on the court / field’ in supporting each other to achieve their common goal. Across both teams, the player who ‘stars’ as the most valuable to the team is difficult to choose, and changes with each new match, and even within a game. Stepping up to lead when required and equally knowing when to support others are valuable skills for life. Alongside that is watching the sheer joy in the crowd, and sense of unity and community that such events create. Go the Matildas!

Year 11 Assembly

In Year 11 Assembly last week we enjoyed hearing from representatives from The Salvation Army, who came along to thank us for our efforts in fundraising during their Red Sheild Appeal this year. We also heard about the many service activities that they provide from their Hornsby base – ranging from food support through to skills development. Any students who are interested in getting involved in these activities to offer ongoing service should see Mrs Michie for more details.

Some students were involved in door knocking, whilst others ran a red bake sale, raising over $2000. Many thanks to those involved in supporting The Salvos – your efforts are truly appreciated by so many.

Gap Program – 2025

This week Year 11 students were invited to an information session with the Deputy Principal, Ms Rockwell, on the avenues available to those interested in pursuing a Gap position after HSC examinations.  These include positions facilitated by the College with partner schools as well as schools who accept direct applications. The relevant information, including the application form, is now available on the Futures Intranet, which your daughter has access to. Applications for Pymble partner schools will close at the end of Term 3, to be followed by interviews during Term 4.

The gap program is open to all Pymble graduates, but it is important to note that in order to be eligible they must be 18 years of age by 1 January 2025 or hold British citizenship or a British passport, and be ready to depart Australia as early as 1 January, 2025.

Should your daughter have any questions, Mrs Wyse or Ms Rockwell can assist.

Students can find out more information about the GAP Year Program on the Futures site by clicking here.

From the Boarding School

It was lovely to welcome back our Deputy Director of Boarding, Katie White, on Monday. Katie left big shoes to fill and we have all missed her energy and cheerfulness. We have all missed her energy and cheerfulness.

Our Boarder Parents

While our focus is always on supporting your girls to be their very best, it is wonderful to hear about our Boarder parents enjoying being together, this time in Mudgee, as Year 10 parent, Jacqui Schofield, shares below.

What a wonderful parents weekend we had last weekend celebrating our girls in Mudgee.

It was an opt in, opt out weekend & I opted for it all! We had a fabulous meet and greet on Friday night at ‘The Ori’ with a very relaxing meal & drinks. It didn’t take long for the stories to start, the laughter to begin and new & old friendships forged.

On Saturday we began the day with those that wanted to join us for lunch & a wine tasting at Gilbert’s, we enjoyed it so much we forgot to get a group photo! The venue was superb and we had exceptional service by the Gilbert’s staff.

The bus then collected us at 3pm for Vinifera Wines & Baker Williams Gin Distillery, they looked after us so well & everyone really enjoyed the afternoon of tastings, the scenery, the giant Jenga but most of all the company.

Our bus driver kept us on schedule & we arrived safely at our final venue, 791 Estate. ‘Fiona the owner’ introduced herself and we were inundated with wine, beer and a magical Mudgee sunset. The whole group came together for a fantastic night and we all thoroughly enjoyed the delicious meal by ‘from farm 2 plate’ Mudgee & Wellstead Shrubs.

Kerry, Gicinta, Woop and I would like to thank all the families that joined us for our inaugural Boarder Parents’ Regional weekend, it truly was so much fun and we hope you’ll consider the next one. Rumoured to be a very long lunch at Hillbilly Cider in Bilpin…. (we are hoping? Tess & Shane xx)

Garden Party News

Our parents came together again on Monday evening to firm up plans for the Garden Party. We enjoyed great success last year, raising significant funds for the Boarding Parent Scholarship fund and, more importantly, having a fun time together. We are hoping to be an even bigger hit in 2023 as we trial a new location on Marden Lawn.

We are keen for donations for our renowned produce stall and it would be great if you could email Garden Party convenor, Kylie Levy, k_levy@bigpond.com  and let her know what you would like to contribute.  We are also in need of people with a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) qualification to work on the Hillbilly Cider stall. If this is you, Kylie would love to hear from you.

Stay tuned for more details on Garden Party in the weeks to come and most importantly, save 15 and 16 September for our Garden Party ‘pres’ and the big day itself.

Love It – Kate Inglis (Acting Deputy Director of Boarding)

This weekend our Love It program sees us heading out to Allianz Stadium to watch the Roosters play the Dolphins in the NRL. On Sunday we will be welcoming the Pymble and Gordon Uniting Church Community for our Sunday Service followed by brunch. A reminder that this is a community event and leave will not be permitted until after lunch.

On Sunday afternoon we will be ready for some sports action with our Year 7/8 Boarders heading to Riverview for a games afternoon and barbecue.  Our Year 9 to 12 Boarders will be welcoming the boys from St Gregory’s onto campus. We are looking forward to introducing the boys to Netball and potentially Bench ball if time permits. These events last year were excellent, and the weather is looking perfect for some fun in the sun again this week.

View From My Window

Hello, my name is Alice Gall, and I am a new Boarder in Year 7 at Pymble. I live on a farm called Tycannah of 15,000 aces just out of Moree in northwest NSW with my Mum, Dad and three older brothers Will, Sam, and Jack as well as my puppies Rosie and Georgie and my brother Sam’s dog Bruce.

On the farm we grow wheat, barley, chickpeas, cotton, and sorghum we also have cattle on our other farm which is about an hour east of Moree.

I am the 5th generation to live on Tycannah.   Moree is best known for its artesian hot spring water; we have many tourists visit to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the water.

When I am at home, I love to take my dogs for a walk and chasing pigs with my brothers. We live very close to the Moree Water ski park and in the summer, we like to go water skiing and sometimes take the dogs.

When I look out my window, I can see George and Rosie playing in the garden while Mum is planting trees. The barley is in the distance glowing bright green and growing fast after the rain we have had over the holidays. My brothers are kicking the footy and riding motorbikes.  Dad is fixing machinery.

What I love about being home is going in the buggy with the dogs and being able to get away from all the chaos of the city. I enjoy the peace and quite of our farm and looking at the stars – something you can’t do in Sydney.

When I return to boarding, I feel lots of different emotions, not wanting to go back to boarding but also excited to see all of my friends and see all of the day girls and getting to hear about everyone’s holidays.

Boarder of the Week

Congratulations to Year 12 Boarder, Isabelle (Izzie) Francis. Izzie, who joined us in Year 9 from Forbes. As Head of Year 12, Anne Graham writes:

Izzie has such a lovely personality – her beautiful smile warms the hearts of everyone around her. Always upbeat, she spreads kindness and positivity. She brightens our days. Her endearing nature makes her everybody’s friend. She effortlessly connects with those around her and is always inclusive, making sure everyone feels valued and appreciated.

One of her most endearing qualities is her cheerfulness. No matter the challenges, she’s always optimistic and her optimism is infectious reminding us all to find the silver lining in every situation. She never forgets to say hello to staff any time she passes the office brightening our day. Beyond her cheerfulness, she is always ready to lend a helping hand.

She embodies the true spirit of empathy and compassion. Izzie is a shining example of the power of a lovely personality. Kind, cheery, and friendly, she leaves a trail of positivity in her wake. Her presence is a gift to Boarding and we are fortunate to have her brightening our days.

From the Chaplains

From the Chaplains

Last week I had the privilege of accompanying a group of Year 9 students from Pymble and Knox to Walgett, Brewarrina and Goodooga. Goodooga Central School hosts the Goodooga Indigenous games held annually at the school. I remember planning this trip in 2018 when the first group from Pymble went across to Goodooga. We caught a train to Dubbo, and then drove from Dubbo to Walgett, Brewarrina and then Goodooga.

This year, following the break we had due to Covid, was the first time we were able to make this happen. I had the privilege of journeying with some wonderful staff from Knox Grammar as well as Julie Shaw and Kate Howie.

Following my last regional trip in 2019, I had forgotten how rejuvenating it can be to be in the bush again with students. To be met with rural hospitality and friendship and to interact with children across these places we visited was soul inspiring. We experienced community and deep interactions with First nations families in these regions including a great insight into the Fish traps in Brewarrina.

I had the privilege of visiting these in 2018, although there was no water and we were amid a drought. To see the fish traps teaming with life and water filled our hearts with hope and was a miracle moment.

The trip was long and seemed arduous, and yet the journey was what will remain ingrained as the highlight of my year at Pymble. The journey was with First Nations and non-Indigenous students, all of whom participated fully in this cultural immersion.

I am enclosing some photos of our trip and the words of Jesus from the Beatitudes his most famous sermon quoting the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 5: Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

May we continue to find meekness in our approach to one another this week, as we communicate, relate, and involve ourselves in life. The depth of our inheriting the earth will come when we enter the journey of relationships and live the cost involved, emulating the footsteps of Christ who always walked alongside those who were in most need of a companion.

Blessings and peace.

Year 12 Trial Examinations and Spring Study Camp

Congratulations to the 2023 Year 12 cohort on the mature and calm manner in which they have approached their Trial examinations. Thank you to our teachers for their diligent work in helping Year 12 prepare. Only two days to go!

Post Trial exams is always the time for Team Pymble! Students are encouraged to work together to share resources, identify their gaps in understanding and exam technique so they can perform at their best as a cohort in the HSC Examinations.

There are major works and course content to finish and consolidation to be done. Every year, students are weary after trials, that is very normal. Teachers in every subject will be guiding students through a structured reflection process. Our advice at this time is to make sure students are focused on taking onboard their feedback and putting it into action.

So much progress can be made before the external exams which are worth 50% of the HSC mark in each subject.

Plans are well underway for our Spring Study Camp in the first week of the holidays from Monday September 25 to Friday September 29. This will run with a similar structure to the Winter Study Camp with teacher and alumni support and will take place in the Senior School Centre. Click here to register now.

Year 11 Examinations and Subject Selection for Year 12

Year 11 have been conscientiously preparing for their exams in Week 7 and 8 of Term 3. We know that all their hard work will be rewarded. Listed below are some important details for their planning.

Click here to see the exam timetable.

Dates for the Exams

The examinations will commence on Monday August 28 and conclude on Friday September 8.

Students will return to normal classes on Monday September 11.

Times

Morning examinations begin at 8.25am.

Afternoon examinations begin at 12.55pm.

Girls should arrive at school 30 minutes before the start of their examinations to sign in and get settled.

Illness

Students follow the usual Illness/misadventure procedures.

  • Email the Senior School and CC in their teacher to notify that they are ill and unable to do the exam
  • Obtain a medical certificate, attach this to the IMA form and submit as a PDF to curriculum@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au
  • Students will be emailed with the catch-up time for their exam which will be completed within the examination period.

Some students have already begun to think and discuss with their teachers about subject options for Year 12.

We encourage students and parents to attend the online Year 11 into 12 Subject Selection Evening which will take place on Monday September 6. (A link will be emailed closer to the date). Following this evening, families will be sent an email with a link and unique code for selecting Year 12 subjects.

NAPLAN Results

NAPLAN results are now available and have been mailed to parents. You will notice that NAPLAN achievement is being reported differently this year. The previous 10 bands have been replaced by 4 proficiency levels (described by ACARA as follows):

  • Exceeding: The student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
  • Strong: The student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
  • Developing: The student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
  • Needs additional support: The student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.

It is important for you to know that we are mapping these results with other assessment data to build a full picture of each student’s progress and level of achievement. Pymble teachers are highly skilled and differentiate to ensure our students are supported and enriched as required. In addition to the expert guidance provided in the classroom, assistance is also available through Homework Help, staffed by Pymble teachers, on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons between 3.30 and 4.30pm.

University of Tasmania – Early Offers for 2024 Students

The University of Tasmania has a Schools Recommendation Program as an alternative pathway of entry.

Watch the online seminar to understand how this program works to help students to understand how early offers to their university are made.

The Futures Report: Exploring Interstate Universities (VIC)

Did you know that in the past two years, 68 students applied to study in Victoria through VTAC*? It is great to see our student cohorts are also looking beyond NSW for courses that align with their interests and career aspirations. Interstate applications are a consideration for students who are determined to do a specific course or to study at a particular institution which may not be offered in NSW or where the ATAR cut off may be more accessible.

Our Futures Advisor, Katrina O’Kelly recently traveled to Victoria to visit the University of Melbourne and Monash University to learn more about their programs and opportunities that could benefit our Pymble students.

To view the opportunities available for institutions in Victoria, you can visit the VTAC website https://www.vtac.edu.au. A handy quick reference guide for Year 12 students and families is available at this link.

This week, I am pleased to handover my column to Katrina to share insights from her visit.

Melbourne University

My visit to Melbourne University was a valuable opportunity to see first-hand this outstanding educational establishment. The university offers students a combination of on campus learning in Melbourne, online learning and other global partnerships.

The main campus is in the heart of the city and is a combination of old and new architectural buildings with state-of-the-art resources and support.

Melbourne University has a different model compared to other universities and follows what it has named The Melbourne Curriculum

Why should students consider Melbourne University?

Recent rankings have reported that Melbourne University is:

  • 1st  IN AUSTRALIA
  • 14th IN THE WORLD
  • 8th IN GRADUATE EMPLOYABILITY WORLDWIDE*

*Source: 2024 QS World University Rankings & QS Graduate Employability 2022

Overseas exchange opportunities are also offered by a number of Global Partnership universities and dependant on the discipline studied. Examples of UK universities are; Kings, Durham, London School of Economics, Queen Mary University of London and UCLA and U Penn in the US.

Residential Colleges

I was privileged to visit 3 of the 10 colleges at University of Melbourne. All the colleges are slightly different and it is important to visit or do your research to see which college you’d best suit. They are all slightly different in both the room offerings and feel.  Some accommodate students from other universities , some only give access to undergraduate students, whilst are exclusive to University of Melbourne students. It is important to do your homework and get a feel for what suits you best.

Apply as the applications open but make sure you put your preferences in the right order. You only need to apply once and the application as these colleges work together to assist students to get accommodation.

Find more about Colleges at  https://www.colleges.unimelb.edu.au/why-choose-college/

Monash University

I learnt about several faculties within Monash University that may entice students who are interested in Natural and Physical Sciences.

Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science

Monash University ranks #2 in the world for Pharmacy and Pharmacology. Monash has retained its position as one of the top universities in the world for Pharmacy and Pharmacology in the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject, with a global ranking of number two behind Harvard. Teaching and Learning is set up in small groups and there is a focus on skills needed to be a pharmacist. The Mentor program learning is based on an integrated program where students are partnered with other students.

Medicine – This is a very popular program with two entry points, highlighted below.

Monash Medicine 2024

If you are from a rural background you may qualify for the following: Deans Rural List. Find out more information in the following video: Alternative entrance into medicine

Health (Nursing, Paramedicine and Midwifery) Science are very popular at Monash. Science and Physiotherapy are both also pathways into Medicine.

Equally, the Law, Business and Education programs are also very popular fields of study. Business and Law have excellent programs and teaching and learning in these courses are very themed based and taught in an integrated manner.

Monash provides an extensive range of Accommodation Services find out more at: https://www.monash.edu/accommodation/accommodation/on-campus-options. I visited facilities on both the Peninsular and Clayton Campus. Another accommodation service is Mannix Residential College  Mannix College Monash.

I was able to visit this brand new student accommodation facility at Gillies Hall, you can view some images below:

Students interested in learning more about opportunities at either of these two universities should contact the Futures Team at futures@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au or Booking a meeting with a Futures Advisor

Reading through the articles for this week, I am constantly impressed by the scope and depth of achievements in the Performing Arts.

I wanted to acknowledge, in particular, the splendid results of Speech and Drama students. The achievements of Junior School students in the recent Ryde Eisteddfod were outstanding.

As we journey through the term, there is much to anticipate. Events include Curriculum showcases in Dance and Drama, final co-curricular eisteddfods in Dance and a theatre sports competition in Drama involving a number of other schools.

Language Arts continues to offer a range of opportunities including Social Debating for Year 6.

We look forward to Garden Party where Music, Drama and Dance will all have exciting presentations and displays.

Diving

Diving

Last weekend Pymble Diving held two exciting events.

On Friday 4 August, the Competitive and Pathways divers and parents attended an information night followed by an exciting Come and Try session for keen parents.

This was an opportunity for parents to appreciate how talented their children are when it comes to soaring from heights while twisting and turning in the air.

Thank you to all parents and divers involved in this fun evening.

School Sport Australia Training (SSA)

On Saturday afternoon, Pymble Aquatic Centre came alive with 50 NSW SSA team divers and parents for an information and training session. It was inspiring to see the entire team training in the pool and displaying the depth of talent present in NSW.

We wish our Pymble divers Angela Xenofontos (Year 9), Zara Ware (Year 4) and Emily Long (Year 4) all the best for SSA which will be held from Monday 21 August Sunday 27 August in Sydney.

Matt Mitcham Interclub – Sunday 20 August

Training is in full swing for the first Interclub of the 2023/2024 Diving season. A reminder to all divers entering this event that Diving NSW registration is due as is registration for the Matt Mitcham event on Sunday 20 August at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. Dive sheets will be entered by coaching staff this week, so please ensure this date is clearly marked in the calendar.

International Success

Congratulations to Pymble Alumni, Kennedy Cooper, who recently competed at the World University Games in Chengdu, China placing 4th in the 10 metre Platform event. This is an outstanding result and exciting to see Kennedy competing on the world stage.

Congratulations to Pymble Alumni, Brittany O’Brien, who has continued her international representation at the World Aquatics Cup Super-Final in Berlin qualifying for the 3m springboard final and placing 8th in this event.

It has been an incredible competitive program for Brittany and we look forward to watching her continued commitment to Olympic qualification in the coming year.

Hockey

Congratulations to all Pymble hockey teams that played on Saturday 5 August. Round 3 saw some great results.

Well done to Pymble 2 and Pymble 3 Senior Teams for another win this round. Thank you to Jessica Brown (Year 10) arriving at Mollie Dive Hockey Field well before her game start time and taking the initiative to assist in cleaning up the field as well as the dug-out. Thank you, Jessica, for leading by example.

Our Junior Firsts had a competitive game against Abbotsleigh. Special mention to Amelia Brandon (Year 9) who is our most recent recruit to Hockey.  Amelia usually plays as a representative Football GK, however, Amelia used her skills stepping in as a Hockey GK impressively defending goals resulting in a 0 to 0 score.

Good luck to our Senior firsts team this weekend who have a repeat 2022 grand final game as they take on the top of the ladder – PLC Sydney.

All the best to our players and coaches for Round 4.

IPSHA Team of the Week

Congratulations to our Team of the Week, IPSHA Touch Football Pymble 7 (Year 3). Our Pymble players secured a narrow victory in a tough match, but it was their outstanding teamwork, skilful play, and genuine fun and joy of playing together on the field that really stood out. This was evident from the smiles on our Pymble players faces before, during and after the game. Well done to Pymble 7!

NSWCIS Golf

Congratulations to Sophie Tong (Year 5) who has achieved outstanding Golf achievements over the past several weeks. These are:

  • Selection into NSWCIS Golf Championships.
  • Placing 6th at the IMG Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego.  On the final day Sophie was placed 18th but then shot the overall best score of 66 among all players in this three day competition.
  • Placing tied 7th in her last tournament for the 9 and 10 girls division at the FCG Callaway World Championship in Palm Desert, California. 36 competitors participated in the three day event on a nine-hole course in extreme conditions every day of 45 degrees and over!

Congratulations to Team of the Week Pymble 23. They have attended their two training sessions to ensure they are playing to the best of their ability and working well as a team.  Well done to: Emma Yates (Year 7), Abby Pisani (Year 7), Aaliyah Chang (Year 7), Mea McBurney (Year 7), Willow Toll (Year 7), Clara Mudaliar (Year 7), Helena Fitzsimmons (Year 7), Isabella Quessy (Year 7), Bella Yang (Year 7) and Alina Shi (Year 7).

Special mention to Pymble 19 who had a tough game on Saturday against Meriden but showed Pymble spirit and determination by coming away with the win by one goal.

Pymble 5 had a close scoring game against Abbotsleigh, ending in a draw.

As we head into Round 4 of Netball, I would like to remind all students to turn up to both training sessions and games on time please. If your games are at another venue, it is important to make sure you allow time for traffic and parking. This will ensure that all players have adequate time to warm up and coaches have teams ready to go for the start of the game.

Good luck to all teams travelling to Frensham this Saturday 12 August – make sure you sample the bacon and egg roll.  Not only delicious but will give you extra energy for your game!

Winter Rowing Update

On Sunday 6 August, our Pymble Winter Rowers went out on the water at Iron Cove for some fun and to develop their skills ahead of the Summer Rowing Season.

The Learn To Row (Year 7) Squad went out in Quadruple Sculls, working on body positioning in the boat ensuring they are in the strongest possible position for the boat to go as fast as possible.

The Junior (Year 8) Squad took the opportunity to train in Single Sculls, seeing how fast they could row individually.

The Intermediate (Year 9) Squad continued to learn sweep technique, rowing in Eights and getting ready to race the upcoming season against other schools in this boat class.

The Senior Squad (Year 10 and 11) took to the water in Coxed Fours and had some exciting side-by-side power stroke racing.  This helps rowers learn how to make the boat go as far as we can per stroke.

Liesel Page (Year 12) – 7th in the World – Junior Women’s Double Scull

Congratulations to Liesel Page who celebrated a B-Final win at the World Rowing Under 19 Championships on Saturday 5 August in Paris. Liesel and her rowing partner Eliza Bridgefoot have now achieved 7th in the world in the Junior Women’s Double Scull. After a fast start, Liesel led after 500m and consolidated the lead to cross the line first ahead of the Chinese (2nd) and Belgian (3rd) crews. Head to the World Rowing page for full results from the regatta.

If you are interested in joining the team for the upcoming Summer Season, please email Mr Lewis Gray at lewis.gray@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au

Congratulations!

Zarina Nurlanov (Year 10) was invited to perform for the Emerging Artists program at Theme and Variations Piano Showroom on August 6. This event aims to give promising young pianists the exciting opportunity to prepare and perform a solo piano recital in front of a live audience. Solo performance occasions outside eisteddfods and examinations for young pianists are rare and we are grateful to our ongoing partnership with Theme and Variations for their invitation to ask one of our talented students. Estella Roche and I attended and thought Zarina was by far the best performer! We look forward to hearing of her progress in this event.

Seeking donations for Sony Camp

Seeking donations for Sony Camp

Sony Camp provides much-needed respite for the parents and siblings of children with disabilities. When they arrive to drop of their child, the parents of our campers are gifted with a pamper pack to allow them to enjoy a week of rest and relaxation. This includes generous donations from our community such as wine, movie vouchers, gourmet food, passes to amusement parks, chocolates and spa or dinner vouchers.

The support of our community in providing these gifts is invaluable. Donations to assist the running of the camp are also greatly appreciated. This includes donations from groceries (biscuits, snacks, water bottles and fruit) and arts and craft (scrapbooking albums and photo paper) to toys/children’s books and miscellaneous materials (in particular, mattress protectors).

If you would like to donate, please drop off all items to the Upper School Office or contact mlombard@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au.
