From the Acting Principal

From the Acting Principal

Our Upper School family has a brand-new home in the Lower Colonnade. It really is stunning, comprising a vast common area for students with a kitchen and comfy furniture for gathering and relaxing; a fresh new locker room; and a light and bright administration area with offices for staff and meeting rooms for families. This is the second sub-school ‘reveal’ since master planning began in earnest, the first being ‘Hedgehog House’ in the Junior School. It is exciting to see the College evolve so seemingly effortlessly, although of course there is a great deal of unseen work behind the scenes to make these enhancements to our school possible.

As you will be aware, the College has recently formalised our values of Care, Courage, Integrity, Respect and Responsibility as ‘Values Statements’ to guide student behaviour and provide the framework for all interactions among our community. A natural extension of this work involves establishing a culture of gratitude for each other as individuals, for the opportunities and resources Pymble provides, and for the staff who are 100 per cent committed to delivering the best possible educational experience for your daughters.

Gratitude is important for several reasons. It helps us focus on the positive aspects of our lives, which improves our emotional wellbeing. Gratitude can also help build and maintain relationships with others, resulting in a sense of hope, greater life satisfaction, and more proactive behaviours within our community.

Prior to students and staff ‘moving in’ to the Lower Colonnade we held a small gratitude and induction ceremony to acknowledge all the people who played a role in delivering this beautiful new facility. We are so proud of all the girls in attendance, including Isis Li (Year 9) and Katherine Pan and Sehjal Baveja (Year 10) who spoke about their appreciation for their new space and those who helped make it happen.

The team was delighted to receive the following letter from the Managing Director of the building team who, along with the architects and Master Plan team, were invited to the ceremony to hand over the space to our Upper School girls.

“I wanted to personally express my heartfelt gratitude for the remarkable appreciation ceremony you organised at Pymble Ladies’ College yesterday. It was a truly humbling experience…The ceremony was a testament to your commitment to recognising and celebrating the achievements and contributions of everyone involved. It was beautifully executed, with thoughtful planning that made the event both engaging and memorable. The inspiring speeches delivered by the students were particularly fantastic to listen to. Thank you once again for your hard work and for creating an occasion that allowed us all to come together and appreciate each other’s efforts.”

In assembly this week, we continued the theme of acknowledging staff whose work may not be highly visible but who all contribute to making Pymble the school we know and love today. Thank you to our Head Prefects, Bella Walker and Julie Sheng for singling out many of our professional services staff and teams to express our gratitude for the work they do to keep our campus beautifully maintained, and our special events, daily operations and operational processes running smoothly.

There was one more heartwarming story that I shared with the girls, and which I am so proud to share with you here, too.

At the recent National Cross Country Championships in Tasmania, Eliza Lawton (Year 8) performed at the top of her game, placing first in both the Individual event and in the NSW Team event along with three runners from other schools. Another Pymble parent – not Eliza’s – wrote to our Pymble Elite Sportswomen’s Co-ordinator, Mrs Skye Halliday, to commend Eliza for an even more impressive display of integrity, care and respect for her teammates.

“…let me tell you about the thing that made me most proud of our girl. They hand out team medals too…These have always gone to the top six team members but they decided at the last minute to only hand out medals to the top three. The fourth girl waited around for an hour after the race only to find this out – she was devastated. When Lizey got her team medal, she went straight up to this girl and gave it to her. She said, you deserve this as much as me. She had all the mums crying.”

These are the stories from within our community that are as important to us as the wins, the places, the top marks, improved marks, and all the other fantastic feats our incredible girls routinely achieve. These are the stories that define our community, and I look forward to hearing and sharing many more of them over the weeks, terms and years ahead.

Windows into Learning

The topic of gratitude leads us beautifully to our incredible academic staff and the care they take to make lessons engaging, effective and memorable. Please enjoy these windows into learning around the College in Term 3.

Andiamo in Italia! (Let’s go to Italy!)

Our young K-2 learners constantly show remarkable courage as they dive into learning Italian. They proudly sing the welcome song at the beginning of each lesson, happily sharing it with other members of our school community. The girls approach each lesson with curiosity and a willingness to ‘have a go’. Their courage to speak up and share their Italian, even when it feels unfamiliar, is a testament to their growing confidence and eagerness to learn new things. Whether it’s confidently trying out new words, practicing sentences aloud or embracing the challenge of what the next lesson brings, their bravery and enthusiasm is inspiring.

One highlight (among many) was Year 1 girls creating playful sentences about what people eat on certain days of the week. Many girls chose Signora Bellè as their subject, sharing weird and wonderful things she ate each day. Much to everyone’s amusement, according to the girls, Signora Bellè ate 100 black-coloured cheeses and even some caterpillars; however, she quite liked the gelato (all 100 of them!).

3D printing in Extension Mathematics

In Extension 2 Mathematics, students are given free rein to model and customise any 3D object they like. This is part of the ‘volumes of revolution unit’ covered by Extension 1 and 2 Maths where students learn methods of cross-section slicing combined with calculus that ultimately provide them the skills to calculate the volume of complex 3D objects such as those they have printed. Given the radius of the circular cross section and its distance from the centre axis, any Extension Mathematics student could tell you exactly how much filament you should order for your giant doughnut!

Welcome back, Dr Hadwen – we’ve missed you!

Hooray, Dr Hadwen returns to us in Week 8 after her well-deserved four-week sabbatical! I am incredibly grateful to her for giving me this opportunity to lead the school while she has been away and have gained a huge appreciation for the level of commitment, patience and multi-tasking required to be Principal of a school like Pymble. Thank you to all our staff and families who have supported me during this time, and especially our girls, for being their wonderfully enthusiastic selves and for giving me strength and lots of laughs along the way. It has been a joy.

Celebrating our Dads!

We are excited to welcome dads, stepdads, uncles, grandpas and father figures to our Junior School tomorrow morning for their belated Father’s Day breakfast and play session. The girls always love seeing family members at school and we’re grateful that so many of you are able to come along. As a working parent myself (although my children are now young adults) I appreciate how tricky it is to change work schedules, and how often it’s just not possible, so thank you to those of you who have managed to juggle schedules to come and spend time at school during the day.

Windows into Learning

This week we’ve enjoyed Windows into Learning for Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 3. It’s wonderful to see so many parents at these learning opportunities and on behalf of the teaching team, I thank you for your willingness to get involved in the learning alongside your daughter. I am sure you will agree that your girls are deeply engaged with their learning and so willing to have a go, embrace challenges and share their thinking.

Learning about Leadership

Our Year 5 girls explored aspects of leadership last week with their Spring into Leadership workshop. Building their understanding of the qualities of a positive and strong leader, the girls worked collaboratively to brainstorm and plan initiatives they would like to lead next year aligned with our College values. I hope many of them are now inspired to nominate themselves for leadership portfolios next year. Whilst not all girls can be given a specific leadership portfolio, we work hard to create leadership opportunities throughout the year for all girls who are keen.

What was particularly impressive was the way all the girls’ ideas centred around wanting to interact with the College values to bring more energy to the way we live our values every day. I’m already excited for the initiatives I will be able to help them bring to life next year. Some of their ideas include:

  • Courage jars for each class with challenges to encourage girls to step outside their comfort zone and try something new.
  • A fortnightly courage newsletter containing challenges and stories of examples where girls have shown courage in their learning.
  • A Junior School wellbeing diary to encourage each girl to show more care and kindness to herself.
  • Each girl being given responsibility for a seed to plant and grow throughout the year, developing her sense of responsibility by connecting with nature.
  • Ivy the integrity bunny who could be hidden around the Junior School with the finder receiving a small message.
  • A poem about respect that all the Junior School girls could learn to heighten awareness for the need for respect within our community.

Social action in the community

Yesterday Mrs Bird and I had the privilege of attending the 2024 Junior Social Action Expo at The King’s School with our 2024 Kindness Leaders Safina Burgess, Melody Chen, Ria Iyer and Chloe Morrison together with Candice Li, Evie Cho, Jasmine Smith and Ellie Rose Ruiz del Portal Greene. The girls shared their kindness leadership and service journey and learnt from other schools about the initiatives they have led to advocate for positive change. There was a powerful buzz of energy as these young change makers came together and shared their determination to change the world.

Kindness Champion of the week

This week I want to give a well deserved shout out to Arianna Lee who has been giving her time to support an environmental initiative at Flat Rock Gully where a project group are working to grow food for sick, injured and orphaned native animals. The activity is free, and Arianna’s parents advise that there is an engaging educational talk about snakes and owls on offer too. Please click here if you are interested in more information.

Robotics

Five Pymble teams competed at Knox Grammar School last week with 6510U Velocity winning the Design Award, an award for a team’s robot design, capability and documentation. 6510U also finished second in the tournament component of the competition. Another Pymble team 6510V 24 Quackers finished third.

All teams who competed are to be congratulated on their ‘have-a-go’ approach and having a robot completed so early in the season. These budding engineers have worked very hard for this year’s competition. This exciting challenge encourages students to work as a team to design, build, and program robots capable of completing a series of dynamic tasks, which focus this year on collecting a ball and shooting them into different height targets. The competition tests not only the girls’ technical skills but also their collaboration, strategy and problem-solving abilities.

We look forward to seeing how this successful start develops as the season progresses.

From the Middle School

Ms Jade Cuningham will be supporting the Middle School team as Acting Head of Year 8 for Term 4. Jade currently works in the Middle School to support the team and will be of great value temporarily stepping in for Theresa Mimmo as she moves into her new role as Deputy Head of Boarding.

This term, our Year 7 students have had the opportunity to apply for the role of Transition Leader, an important role that sees our students work with our incoming Year 6 students. This year we saw an unprecedented number of applications. Selected students have attended training and begun the first of the Year 6 into 7 Transition Workshops. In these workshops, they built rapport with Year 6 by undertaking the team spaghetti tower challenge, shared their experience of beginning Year 7, worked to dispel untruths of high school and shared some top tips. The leaders will run two more of these lunchtime workshops, a Compass Lesson, support the Middle School team in the running of parent information evening, Links Day and Year 7 Orientation.

Below, three of our Transition leaders share their experiences of their lunchtime workshop.

The experience was a really great time for both of us, being the leaders, and the Year 6 students. I think that the Year 6 students learned a lot about the transition from Year 6 to 7. We first started with a spaghetti tower challenge and a Q&A. Finally, we told them the false rumours about years, such as it’s difficult to make new friends. They learnt what to do if they have any issues, how you move from class to class, and some simple things, like where the bathrooms are and where the Middle School office is. Overall, I think the experience of hearing about the other point of view from my transition partner was interesting. I believe that the Year 6 students will have a very smooth transition into Year 7.

Written by Peyton Ashton

Last Wednesday, I had the opportunity to lead a group of Year 6 students with my transition leader partner through some fun tasks and activities. I enjoyed getting to know them better as well as talking to them about how they feel as they transition into Middle School. It was a great experience filled with many laughs and smiles. At first, I was a bit nervous to see how they would react but as I met them, I was greeted by very friendly and respectful people. Overall, I learned a lot about leadership through this workshop and I enjoyed getting to know everyone.

Written by Rachel Lin

Last week during transition day with the Year 6s,  Peyton and I were able to introduce the Year 6s to Middle School and give them a brief overview about how things worked and helped them understand that most of the negative rumours that they have heard are untrue, we also answered some of their questions and told them about how amazing middle school was. Peyton and I also were able to do a fun activity with the Year 6s and the activity helped us to bond with them a lot and understand some of their worries and concerns. Overall it was very fun and I really enjoyed meeting new people.

Garden Party Update

Each year, the Middle School creates hampers or gift baskets to sell at the Garden Party. Year 7 and Year 8 students can also volunteer to work at the Middle School stall on the day in shifts until we sell out of baskets. Due to the generosity of our students and their families, the stall is always very profitable with all proceeds donated to the college’s charity, The Barbara May Foundation.

This year, each House colour has been assigned a different basket theme. Your daughter may have already shared this with you. A list of themes can be found below.

Working in small groups, students have time across the week during Compass to plan and build their hampers/baskets.

Year 7 have been asked to bring in their items for their basket by Week 9, September 18 and as Year 8 are attending their Outdoor Education program in Week 9, their hampers/baskets need to be completed by Week 8, September 12.

Melissa Jeurgens presented to Year 7 on Tuesday. The girls were engaged and took a lot from her practical approach sharing information about healthy eating.

Melissa is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian and a Sports Dietitian. In addition to her clinic at Narrabeen, Melissa works with the GWS Giants AFL and Giants Netball as their head Sports Dietitian. It is Melissa’s mission to simplify diet and nutrition and help people see food as more than just calories. A balanced diet should not deprive you of foods you love but instead help you to be the healthiest, happiest version of yourself and enable you to thrive in our ever-changing world. Our Compass team will conduct follow up activities on Thursday.

Congratulations

Isabel Fan (Year 7) achieved some amazing results at the Australia National Eisteddfod in Canberra last weekend. She was awarded a first, second and third place across a variety of solo categories. Isabel’s passion and talent for music is so impressive. Well done!

Ayla Gorton (Year 8) is to be commended on her efforts to support and build awareness about the Women’s Resilience Centre in Mona Vale – which helps women who have survived domestic violence. She had the opportunity to attend a radio interview this week with her father where she shared her passion for helping others.

Here’s Ayla’s reflection from the day:

My dad commenced his fundraising for the Women’s Resilience Centre earlier this year by committing to run the very difficult Larapinta Trail in Alice Springs, an 82-kilometre train run.

Prior to the run me and my family visited the Resilience Centre and were given the privilege to sit in on a talk with some of the women who had been affected by domestic violence. I thought their stories were very touching. They all showed such amazing resilience and strength in face of everything they’ve been through.

My dad has now raised $120,000 which we are extremely proud of. As a family in support, we ran the Beach to Beach DY to Newport, a five-kilometre run. Yesterday, we were interviewed by the Northern Beaches radio station, where my dad and I discussed the importance of giving back to the community. All in all, it was a great experience.

Congratulations also to Eliza Lawton (Year 8) who was recognised at the Combined Assembly on Tuesday by Ms Rockwell, our Acting Principal. Lizey demonstrated a very strong commitment to our college values when competing at a National Athletics Competition in Tasmania over the weekend. Her selfless decision to care for others and demonstrate deep compassion is a testament to her character. Thank you, Lizey.

A reminder the Subject Selection Presentation will be held online on Thursday 12 September at 6.00pm for Year 8 2025 and 6.30pm for Year 9 2025.

A message from Ms Mariel Lombard, Acting Head of Upper School

It has been wonderful to see our Year 9 and 10 students fill the Upper School Common Room this week during their recess and lunch breaks. The puzzles, chess boards, knitting and card games have been in high demand! Last week, prior to the opening of our Common Room, some of our Year 10 students reflected on their hopes for the new space. It’s safe to say we think they will be thrilled with the results.

I think the new Upper School Common Room will have plenty of comfy seating and be a great spot for activities with our Compass groups, as well as a place to chat with friends. I’m most excited to catch up with friends, especially those I don’t see often because we’re all spread out during lunch and recess. I hope it has comfortable chairs, big tables for group hangouts, and a relaxing environment, which would make it more inviting. Overall, I think the common room will be a great place for everyone to gather, making it easier to connect with people we don’t usually talk to. – Written by Emma Pattison (Year 10)

I imagine the new Common Room will be warm, inviting, and comfortable—a perfect spot for Upper School students to relax. I’m excited about using the microwave to heat up food and hanging out on the cozy couches with friends. I think it will become a great place for us to gather, chat, and make our free time more enjoyable. Overall, I believe the Common Room will bring our year groups closer by giving us a shared space to spend time together. Written by Oliana Tighe (Year 10)

I think the new Upper School common room will be a great space for Year 9 and 10 students to relax, socialise, and connect without relying on technology. I’m excited to hang out with friends, meet new people, and play games during breaks. It’ll likely foster new friendships and make school more enjoyable by offering engaging activities. The room will also help us connect with Year 9 students, as we’ll share our final year with them in the KM (Kate Mason) Building. Written by Aria Wallbank (Year 10)

Here’s a video of last week’s gratitude ceremony, followed by some pictures of the common room being put to good use.

Year 9 Leadership Applications

On Friday last week, our Year 9 students were notified about the process of applying for leadership positions in 2025. Applications opened on Friday and will remain open until tomorrow. Students have been provided with an overview of the many positions available and can explore the full range of leadership roles by visiting the online website (accessible through the MyPymble parent portal). Year 10 students will hear more about 2025 leadership opportunities next week.

Exchange Update

It has been lovely to receive updates and photos from our Year 10 students on exchange in Argentina, Japan, Scotland and New Zealand. The photos below share some of the joys of their first weeks in their respective host countries.

Year 10 St Edmund’s AIM Initiative

A lucky group of Year 10 students attended the AIM initiative at St Edmund’s College earlier this week. The program, which is run by staff at St Edmund’s College, is designed to promote advocacy in the disability sector and allow students to immerse themselves within a community that is enriched by intellectual disability. Annabel and Jahle have shared their experiences below.

Last Monday, a group of Year 10 students were invited to St Edmund’s College for the day to learn about the importance of advocating for people with disabilities. St Edmund’s is a secondary school in Wahroonga that caters for students with a range of intellectual disabilities, autism and other sensory impairments. St Edmund’s College places huge emphasis on the importance of teaching their older students’ practical skills that they will need to live independently. Each class is run with no more than ten students in each, with every student having their work personalised to suit their abilities.

We listened to one of the St Edmund’s teachers talk about the school and he explained how some disabilities are hidden and so we shouldn’t make assumptions about people’s abilities or disabilities. We participated in an activity where we were blindfolded and used a walking cane to simulate the challenges faced by someone with a visual impairment. And while touring the school we couldn’t walk past a classroom without students enthusiastically smiling and waving at us! We spent recess and lunch with the students, and despite some barriers in communication, we were able to share experiences and make meaningful connections. So many of the St Edmunds students were genuinely so excited to see us and rushed over to introduce themselves. We also noticed that the school environment was very inclusive – with students from Year 12 happily playing sport with Year 7s.

After attending AIM, we all left with greater awareness of the barriers people with a disability face in everyday life. The initiative was such a rewarding experience, and we would highly recommend it if you are interested in advocating for people with disabilities.

Year 12 Visual Arts Bodies of Work Exhibition

Congratulations to all our Visual Arts students for the tremendously innovative artworks that you have all produced for your HSC. The diversity of media and range of sources of inspiration were so interesting to read about and view. Always a highlight of the year, you certainly did not disappoint. The ideas that you communicated through your art were so personal, complex and well-considered. Many thanks to your teachers and mentors who have guided you all through this demanding critical and creative process.

Year 12 Drama Showcase

Further congratulations to our students on their extraordinary performances at this year’s Drama Showcase. The diversity of scripts, coupled with innovative interpretations and commanding stage presence, made for a truly memorable evening. Each performance showcased not only the incredible talent within our student body but also the dedication and creativity that went into bringing these stories to life. A special thank you must also go to our drama teachers, whose guidance and support were instrumental in the success of this showcase. Their commitment to nurturing our students’ talents and encouraging their creative expression is deeply appreciated.

English Extension 2 Celebration

It was an absolute honour to hear from our English Extension 2 students as they submitted their major works, each one a testament to their extraordinary dedication and intellectual depth. The complexity and nuance in their projects revealed not only their creative talent but also a remarkable perseverance in exploring and articulating sophisticated ideas. The pride their teachers feel is well-deserved, as these students have truly demonstrated an exceptional ability to engage critically and creatively with their work. Grateful thanks for the guidance and mentorship provided by their teachers.

Year 12 Finishing with Style

Last week, I spoke to our Year 12 students about their final weeks at the College. This is a time of mixed emotions, including high excitement and nervous anticipation. I reminded them that it is an opportunity to reflect on their journey with joy, maturity, gratitude and pride. This wonderful year group has been distinguished by their deep pride in their school and their unwavering commitment to doing their best for each other and for themselves. While the end of their school days draws near, it’s important to remember that all timetabled classes and normal expectations continue, and that there is still much learning to be completed. These final weeks are an opportunity to consolidate their efforts, embracing the challenges ahead with the same dedication that has defined their time here.

Languages Week

Congratulations to our Languages Captains Kathie, Emily, Lisa and Amy, who lead a very successful Languages Week across the College last week. There were many fun activities for the students to engage with, resulting in a highly successful week, due to the planning and commitment of these leaders! Please find below a report from Kathie:

Salve, Buongiorno, Hallo, and Ni Hao from your 2024 Languages Captains.

We had a blast organising the annual Languages Week!

Monday kicked off with a bang, featuring our inaugural Masked Singer event with House in MBS, shoutout to all our mystery singers and their amazing dance moves!

Tuesday featured a bake sale, with cakes decorated to represent various cultures and languages. Thanks to our volunteer bakers, we were able to raise $121 for the Barbara May Foundation! Wednesday brought out hidden talents with an oratory competition, allowing participants to unleash their inner Cicero.

On Thursday, students became archaeologists, piecing together and translating ‘mosaics. The week also featured a joint House origami initiative, where each paper house folded earnt House points – stay tuned for the results!

Finally, we concluded on Friday with a thrilling game of Language Family Feud. Students and staff went head-to-head to see ‘what the survey said’.

Congratulations to everyone that participated! See you all next year!

Year 11 Examinations

I would like to congratulate the maturity and good sense of the Year 11 students as they began their first week of Yearly Examinations this week. Heartfelt thanks to the Year 12s who are showing their care and respect of their younger KM ‘sisters’ as they finish this milestone in their transition to Year 12.

Uniform

Now that the girls have moved back into their summer uniforms, with the warmer weather, could I please ask that all parents check their daughter’s uniform. In particular, please ensure that your daughter’s skirt is worn just above the knee and that she is wearing the correct socks.

From the Boarding School

As our Year 12s enjoy their final few weeks of formal lessons, they are busily planning for their life beyond Pymble. For many of our Boarders, this means a move to a residential college and, over the last few months, it has been my great pleasure to write many words of support for our Boarders in this endeavour.

While our Boarders certainly receive a world class education here at the College, the skills and dispositions they learn in Boarding are ones which will serve them equally well in their life beyond Pymble. The ability to be able to live successfully in community is a true art and one which relies on qualities our Boarders have in trumps – courage, independence, resilience, compromise and care. As in years gone by, I look forward to happy news of the next adventure that awaits our Boarders.

Meanwhile our Year 11 Boarders are fully immersed in their preliminary examinations. The girls have worked hard over the last few weeks, making excellent use of the Learn It program and staff to ensure they are well prepared to give these final examinations their very best. My thanks to our Boarding staff who have been caring for the girls during this period, ensuring they have a comfortable and productive environment in which to study and a welcoming home to return to following each exam.

Love It – Katie White, Deputy Director of Boarding

Last week’s Love It program made the most of the spectacular weather. Holly took a mini bus full of Boarders down to Mona Vale Beach last Sunday. The weather was so warm that the Boarders even decided to have a very quick dip in the 17-degree ocean pool. Saturday night was filled with action as well, with our always popular laser tag excursion to Chatswood. This week, we have the Boarders from Year 9 Shore joining us on Friday evening for trivia, and on Saturday afternoon and evening, the girls will have the opportunity to invite a Day Girl into Boarding. On Sunday, the wonderful Meredith Myles will be taking the girls on a thrifting adventure to UTURN at Punchbowl.

The Press Club

Just a reminder to sign up for our next Boarding Community Event, to be held on 20 September, the eve of the Garden Party. Following the Boarder Parent Group meeting and some last-minute Garden Party preparations, join our Boarding parents for a dinner at the Butchers Block at Wahroonga before heading to the Warrawee Club for an evening of live music and dancing. All Boarders are required to be in attendance on this night and we hope our families can join in the fun too.

A message about our Garden Party

As you may be aware the Garden Party is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Boarding community. Last year we raised $17,000 and $20,000 the year before. It is being held on Saturday 21 September and is a fantastic day. We will be running three stalls: the Produce Stall, the Boarders’ Barbecue and the fabulous Hillbilly Cider Shed. We will also be holding a raffle. This is a shout out to get you thinking of what you may be able to donate or contribute to the Produce Stall or the raffle.

Anything produced by Boarding families is welcome. Some examples include baked goods, jams, chutneys, sauces, pickles, fruit, eggs, bunches of herbs, flowers, wheat and cotton. It is a very popular stall and loved by all the city folk. Any donations for raffle prizes would also be greatly appreciated.

On the barbecue this year, we will also be serving bacon and egg rolls with tomato relish between 10.00am and 11.30am, and after that it will be our delicious pork and slaw rolls. Any donation of eggs for this stall would be amazing.

Finally, keep your eye out for the Google form to book a spot on the roster. Any help is appreciated and it really is a great way to catch up with other parents while contributing to the day.

View From My Window

Hi, my name is Dezi and I am from Narrabri in North Western NSW. However, when I was six I moved to a small country town called Walgett. Little did I know I would make some lifelong friendships there. I recently moved to Dubbo with my mum, but dad still lives in Walgett.

I have a little sister, Lexi, who is currently in Year 7 at St Catherine’s School in Waverley. I also have three older brothers: Brandon who is 27, Jayden who is 26, and Blake who is 25. They all went to TAS in Armidale, so they were pretty jealous when I got to go to a big city school.

I love having such a big family as I always have someone to talk to and to be around. A fun fact about my name: I am actually named after my Pop whose name is Desmond, but he gets called Dezi for short, so it can get really confusing when we are at family gatherings.

Pop is a really big Beatles fan; he always likes to say his life is based around the song ‘Ob-La-Di-La-Da’ as his name is Desmond. He has a dog named Molly and his daughter married a Jones. Not to mention my Mum’s name is Penny, after the song ‘Penny Lane’. When I am home my favourite thing to do is just be with my family; they are a big part of my life. I always feel sad about leaving my family back home, but I have a family here at Pymble that I always look forward to coming back to.

Boarder of the Week

Congratulations to Year 7 Boarder Zahra, who is our well-deserving Boarder of the Week. Zahra joins us from Breeza in the state’s Liverpool Plains agricultural region.

She consistently demonstrates kindness, courage and a playful nature. She is always well organised. Zahra wears her uniform with pride and ensures she is on time and ready for whatever the day may bring. She has a creative mind and uses this to build community and spread positivity.

This term Zahra proposed a competition to determine which foursome kept the tidiest room and her housemates have enjoyed the friendly rivalry almost as much as the Avonmoore team have enjoyed the extra sparkling surrounds. We are delighted to call Zahra a Pymble Boarder!

From the Chaplains

This Sunday is the Festival of the Winds at Bondi Beach. The Festival of the Winds is held each year and celebrates spring with a spectacular display of kites of all shapes and sizes spread along the beach.

As a local resident I have been lucky enough to attend for several years. Last year my daughter and I made the spontaneous decision to go on the Ferris Wheel that was temporarily installed near the pavilion. Normally I am a bit afraid of these things, but this time I decided to ignore my fear and jump on board. We climbed in, the gate was locked by the attendant and off we went slowly soaring high above Bondi Beach.

It was spectacular.

The ocean glimmered beneath us. The sand spread out like an arc of the golden sun. The kites, some of them as big as whales, became small pulsating spots. The thousands of people were pinpricks of colour as small as a grain of sand.

As we sat there suspended above it all I felt totally overwhelmed with awe at the beauty of what I was seeing. It allowed me to see myself and the world that I am a part of differently, and to reflect on what that meant in my day to day.

The Cambridge Dictionary describes ‘awe’ as ‘a feeling of great respect sometimes mixed with fear or surprise’.

‘Awe’ is also a word often used in the Bible. Sadly though, it is all too often translated simply as ‘fear.’ So much so that ‘fear of the Lord’ has become a common phrase. I worry that this limited translation has done us a disservice over the many years of use of these words. In translating the word ‘awe’ as only fear we have taught generations of people to fear God, and therefore to fear the teachings of faith.

But imagine if we reframed this.

If we stopped fearing God, and the teachings of faith but instead but approached God with curiosity and wonder? Imagine if we took this further to approach all things, particularly those that things that are different or unfamiliar in this way?

With an openness to discover something unexpected and wonderful when we approach the unknown despite our hesitation?

What might you find? What would you allow yourself to discover?

I know that in overcoming my fear of the Ferris wheel that day gave me a view of God and the world that I did not imagine. An ‘awesomeness’ that was beyond my expectation. My prayer for you is that you find the same. That you put aside your fear and invite possibility in the things that you would normally hesitate to experience. I promise that in doing so you may just discover something spectacular.

Winter Wonderland

Congratulations to all our wonderful Winter Wonderland Gymnasts! On Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1 September, our National Level 3, 4 and 9 gymnasts all competed at the annual Winter Wonderland gymnastics competition held at Manly Warringah Gymnastics Club, Cromer.

This was the first time for many of our gymnasts to compete at Winter Wonderland and it has a different award system. Instead of each gymnast receiving a certificate and a coloured ribbon according to their score for each individual apparatus and all around, they use the Level 5 and upwards system, whereby there are first to third place Medals and fourth to sixth place ribbon awards for each apparatus and all around trophies and medals.

The gymnasts are split according to their date of birth in age groups.

This week, we’re giving a huge shoutout to IPSHA Touch Football Pymble 3 (Year 5) for their fantastic performance on Saturday! They crushed it with a convincing win against their opponents. All the hard work and skill they’ve been putting into training really showed on game day.

The best part of the match was how much fun the girls had out there! They played with such energy and enthusiasm, making every play look effortless. It was clear that not only were they excelling, but they were also enjoying every moment on the field together.

Way to go, girls! Keep that spirit alive and keep having fun!

Pymble Netball had an outstanding weekend, with many exciting matches and all our teams demonstrating excellent teamwork and spirit. All the girls gave it their all, but a special mention goes to a couple of girls who stepped up and filled in for teams other than their own.

Lily Bartz (Year 8), Devishi Malla (Year 8), and Akshara Bhattacharya (Year 8) all filled in at Thornleigh for Pymble 5 before their own game at Sydney Olympic Park. Also, a big thank you to their parents for driving the extra distance to get them to both games. Japmehar Bhatia (Year 8), Sasha McGarrick (Year 8), Cynthia Zhao (Year 9), and Ruby Watson (Year 9) all filled in for Pymble 11 before their game at Pymble.

Lastly, a special mention goes to our Pymble 23 team who fought extremely hard and performed so well against PLC Sydney. Despite only having six players on the court, they managed to secure the win. Keep up the fantastic commitment and hard work girls, as this weekend is our last game before the finals!

Ryde Eisteddfod Highlights

Our Drama students recently participated in the Ryde Eisteddfod, showcasing their talent, creativity, and teamwork. We are thrilled to share the successes and highlights from this exciting event.

Congratulations to Amelia Hardas (Year 7), Ellie Lau (Year 7), Ella Gungor (Year 8), Isabella Benjamin (Year 8), Isabella Fung (Year 7), Annabella Bayfield (Year 8), and Dionne Jacobs (Year 7) for receiving a Highly Commended award for their performance of The Formal Club. This high-energy piece depicted a group of misfits who break into the principal’s office to alter their grades in a last-ditch effort to attend the formal. The students’ portrayal of the mischievous characters, coupled with a daring “mission impossible” movement sequence, made their performance a standout.

Our second group, consisting of Zoe Bloom (Year 9), Yvette Moodie (Year 9), Laranya Nanthakumaran (Year 9), Isabelle Port (Year 9), Katerina Economou (Year 9), and Grace McSweeney (Year 9), faced an unexpected challenge as one of their group members was unwell on the day of the performance. However, the group rose to the occasion, with Isabella Benjamin (Year 8) stepping in as an understudy at the last minute. Their performance, a humorous piece about a boy who mistakenly ends up attending an all-girls school for the day, was met with laughter and applause. Though they did not place, their ability to deliver a polished and entertaining performance under difficult circumstances is truly commendable.

I am incredibly proud of all our students for their dedication and hard work in preparing for the Ryde Eisteddfod. Well done everyone!

An End to the Eisteddfod Season

The Eisteddfod season has ended but what remains are the memories of the 88 solo performances given by Junior School students in the Ryde and Sydney Eisteddfods. They gained valuable experience by preparing creative, meaningful performances and by developing their talent and skill in collaborative ways with their peers. Miss Pip Dracakis and Mrs Victoria Clancy congratulate each and every performer.

VEX IQ Robotics Competition – Monday 26 August

The recent VEX IQ competition brought together 20 teams, including eight from Pymble, composed of our enthusiastic Year 5 and 6 students. This event marked the first competition experience for many of these young engineers, and they truly rose to the occasion. All teams competed with incredible focus and determination.

Throughout the competition, the students demonstrated their ability to stay composed and engaged, whether during matches or while interacting with the judges. The excitement in the air was palpable as they navigated the challenges and celebrated their achievements together. Their teamwork, respect for one another, and consideration for the event and its volunteers did not go unnoticed and are truly commendable.

A special congratulations goes to team 6510U for earning the Design Award. This prestigious award recognizes their outstanding ability to document and explain their engineering design process through their engineering notebook and during their team interview. Their dedication to thoroughly understanding and articulating their design journey is a testament to the hard work and collaboration of the entire team. VEX V5 Robotics Competition – Saturday 31 August

This past Saturday, we hosted an exciting VEX V5 competition in the Junior School hall, where 17 teams, including five from Pymble, came together for a day full of action. Families and friends filled the hall to support the teams as they put their robots to the test. The competition featured intense matches with four robots on the field at once—two on the red alliance and two on the blue—battling it out to score points. There was also a challenge where robots played the game on their own, trying to score as many points as possible.

Each year, VEX introduces a new game, and this year’s challenge was all about robots handling 17cm rings and scoring them on different height goals. To make things even more interesting, the robots have a ladder to climb, with the highest rung at 1.16m. It was incredible to see the students tackle these challenges, and we’re especially grateful to the volunteers who gave up their time to help make the day special.

The competition brought together teams with all kinds of experience levels. Some teams had been competing in VEX V5 for three to four years, while others, including our Pymble teams, were there for the first or second time. It was a great learning experience for everyone, and it was inspiring to see the newer teams learning from the more experienced ones.

A big congratulations to Team 65100R for winning the Think Award, recognizing their innovative programming approach to solving the game’s challenges, and to Team 65100K for the Judges Award for their special recognition. We’re also proud of all our Pymble teams for showing great teamwork and excitement throughout the competition.

  • Team 65100E – Hannah Murphy (Year 8), Anagha Kandala (Year 8), Madeleine King (Year 7), Aahana Paliwal (Year 8), Paanya Khatri (Year 8)
  • Team 65100H – Jennifer Xu (Year 7), Thalia Wang (Year 7), Georgia Halliday (Year 7)
