From the Principal

From the Principal

Thank you for a wonderful, albeit bittersweet at times, first term. It was wonderful to see our girls and their teachers, coaches and mentors embrace Term 1 with fabulous energy, attitudes and appetites for learning. With Easter on our doorstep, we send our best wishes to our Cattle Team members who are currently at the Sydney Royal Easter Show participating in cattle parading, judging and the auctions of Terry, Tigger and Tommy, our College steers. Next week, our Pymble Pride Robotics team heads off to Houston for the World Championships, where we know they too will make us Pymble Proud. Go well, girls, and all students who are representing Pymble teams during the break.

The bittersweet part of this term was saying farewell to a very special member of our family, Reverend Lorenzo Rodrigues Torres, who leaves us after 12 years of exceptional service to take up ministry at Balmain Uniting Church. It is impossible to sum up the measure of the beautiful man we all know and love, and to convey the impact of the joy, wisdom, comfort and unconditional support he has given so selflessly to all in our community during his tenure at Pymble. We are truly blessed to have had Rev Lorenzo in our lives; I know many of us will keep him in our prayers, just as we know he will keep us in his. From the bottom of our hearts, Lorenzo, thank you for the gift you have been to our Pymble family. ❤️

As you would imagine, finding someone to take Lorenzo’s place is not an easy task. As individuals and as a team, our Chaplains play an incredibly important role in our lives and in binding us as a community. Our initial search left us feeling like we had to dig a little deeper to find the perfect person for Pymble, so the position will remain vacant for a little while longer while we extend our search. In the meantime, we are delighted to announce that our Head of Religion and Ethics, Edwina O’Brien, has been appointed Assistant Chaplain to support Rev Bent. Ms O’Brien is a former Pymble student and English Teacher, who recently moved into Religion and Ethics, a space where she is thriving. Eddy, as she is affectionately known to staff, is currently halfway through a Bachelor of Theology and has begun her period of Formation with the Sydney Central Coast Presbytery of the Uniting Church Synod of NSW and ACT. This will prepare her as she discerns her call to ordained ministry and service in the Uniting Church and gains experience and spiritual direction in pastoral ministry and practice. Eddy will split her time between her two roles from Term 2.

In reflecting on Lorenzo’s legacy, and the way he and Rev Bent have combined their gifts and talents to care for our community, it occurred to me that we are incredibly fortunate to have a number of unique teams that sit outside our academic departments, and that are equally dedicated to serving our students and their families in their own special way. This week it is my pleasure to introduce to you to a few of our less-visible teams at Pymble and share a glimpse of the work they do behind the scenes each term – and often throughout the breaks – to enhance the Pymble experience for our students and their families. We have chosen to end the term highlighting these very special members of our Pymble family, in part to acknowledge and thank them for all they do for our community.

Shining a light on Professional Services staff at Pymble…

Boarding School Administration Office

Can you imagine the organisation required to keep 127 teenage girls safe, well and happy while living on campus? Think about the food, laundry, appointments, outings, travel, fun and treats needed! Our Boarding Administration team of two works tirelessly to ensure the holistic care of each Boarder, organising everything from Easter egg hunts to return trips to and from Boarding to destinations all over Australia and the world. They do this with the greatest of care and apparent ease, and always, always with a huge smile.

Junior School Office

The kind souls in our Junior School Office work seamlessly to provide a high level of care for 793 students aged from four to 12 years old, 1,600+ parents and carers and 80 staff members. On a day-to-day basis, this entails managing multiple events such as excursions and incursions, often on the same day, across all year groups; sorting and distributing 400 student lunches each day; and supporting the Junior School Executive team with daily logistics. Oh, and lots of hugs.

Secondary School Offices (Middle, Upper and Senior School)

Apart from all of the usual administrative functions, such as event organising, monitoring attendance, organising meetings, seeking the whereabouts of students needed for one thing or another, dealing with lunches, caring for unwell girls and answering questions from students and parents, our sub-school Office Administration staff are often the first people our girls come to for help, a chat or a shoulder to cry on. Our big-hearted and ever-efficient office admin staff are all genuinely interested in our girls and their wellbeing – kind of like a Mum at school – and are dedicated to giving a high level of attention and care to our students each day.

Curriculum Office

This team is the centre of the Secondary academic universe, supporting students, parents and staff as they navigate their choices in learning from Years 7 to 12. When life throughs curveballs, such as illness or misadventure, this fabulous team comes to the rescue, helping students and their families navigate the requirements for assessments and examinations with kindness and care.

IT (aka The Hub)

It would be a rare student or staff member who never had cause to visit or seek help from our amazing Hub technicians. Seriously, we couldn’t exist without them. In preparation for the new school year, The Hub’s Helpdesk team efficiently unboxed, configured and distributed 2,500+ assets to students and new staff members. Throughout the term, the team provided exceptional technical support during new orientations, office relocations and NAPLAN tests across three days and four locations in Week 7. We love the Hub team for their unwavering dedication and kindness, ever-present smiles and can-do attitude which ensures that no IT challenge is too difficult to overcome.

Facilities

Our diverse Facilities team of skilled professionals goes above and beyond to deliver to the ‘Pymble standard’ when tending to a wide range of building projects, renovation works, preventative maintenance, grounds maintenance and sports preparation, logistics and events as well as security and cleaning services – always with a focus on sustainability and an aim to please. Before Term 1 began, the team completed the summer works program and made sure the campus was safe and stunning for our first day back. Throughout the term, our fabulous Facilities team assisted with multiple event and function set ups, including our PPA Ice Breaker, New Parents’ High Tea and Parent Breakfasts, as well as NAPLAN Exams and this week’s Careers Expo.

Finance

Fun fact: our Finance team of eight has more than 70 years of combined experience at the College. Fun notwithstanding, the day-to-day focus of this rock-solid team of legends is running the finance function of the College, which includes invoicing fees and making payroll and supplier payments. Finance also manages the College budget and prepares our Strategic Financial Forecast for the next ten years, including managing the financing of the Masterplan. This is all achieved through the hard work, dedication and commitment of a great team of professionals who genuinely care for each other, the College and the work they do.

Community Engagement

Our Community Engagement (CE) team spans our Alumni, Enrolments, Events, and Marketing and Communications departments, as well as the Pymble Foundation and Uniform Shop. The team is kept busy throughout the year connecting with and celebrating our wonderful Pymble community of students, parents, carers, ex-students and staff. They are the people who organise events, design publications, keep our community informed, outfit the girls in Pymble style, support the wider community, cultivate philanthropic connections for the College’s development, promote Pymble to the world, and welcome more than 350 new Pymble girls each year – no small feat! From enquiry to graduation and beyond, our CE team goes above and beyond to ensure all families have a great experience during their Pymble journey.

Human Resources

Our people mean the world to us at Pymble; we aim to attract and retain the best staff to support your daughter’s learning journey. In Term 1, and throughout the year, our Human Resources (HR) team onboard new staff through our highly rated Welcome Program. At the start of the year our intake included new teachers as well as operations, administrative and co-curricular staff, all of whom received a warm welcome and supportive start to their Pymble journey. Our HR team also implemented the new Pymble Pulse Staff Engagement Survey, to ensure we continue to listen to and amplify the voice of our staff. The team is now pumped to use this feedback to work on plans for areas where we can do even better and strive for that perfect mark. As we say here at Pymble – no survey without service!

College Services

Our versatile College Services (CS) team is an administrative hub of the College, managing everything from our central services (Pymble buses, Opal and concession cards, mail service and Print Room) to data management (contact details, student reports, records and awards), while also supporting our Heads of Learning Areas and other teams as required. In Term 1, the team was busy printing an array of College magazines and documents, playing a part in the internal roll-out of various features of the MyPymble in partnership with our IT team, finalising the proofing of reports, and working on a new bus registration form to give our parents a better user experience, to be rolled out later this year.

Out of School Hours Care

For many of our busy, working families, Pymble’s Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) centre, also known as the Department of Fun, offers support and a second home for their daughters who attend before and after school care and/or holiday care. Term 1 is an especially busy time for OSHC staff, who follow on from the Early Learning Curriculum to support the transition of our new Kindy students from pre-school to their new ‘big school’ environment. For our older girls, OSHC provides a caring, safe and supportive environment before and after the school day, and during term breaks, to help them settle into their new school year, attend co-curricular activities and, most importantly, relax and play with their carers and friends.

Libraries in our Junior and Senior Schools

Pymble’s three libraries are staffed by a talented team of teacher librarians and technicians, many of whom are qualified librarians with significant experience in public and university libraries. Their work includes audio visual services, managing subscriptions, managing the databases that hold all the libraries’ records, creating the digital interface for browsing and borrowing, providing services for borrowers including re-shelving, creating online compilations of learning material, managing the purchasing, repairing books and assisting with research. The technicians also run maker space activities for students, create a quarterly newsletter of book reviews, supervise the library monitors, and create stunning and engaging displays throughout the year. Their dedicated and consistent service allows us to open our libraries beyond the hours of the school day and provide safe and warm spaces for students to relax, study and enjoy their learning.

Co-curricular

A huge department at the school, Co-Curricular covers everything that happens outside the classroom, including organised Sport, Performing Arts, Extended Learning, our Aquatic Centre and Learn to Swim programs, and afterschool programs in the Junior School. Pymble girls are fortunate to have best in industry coaches and co-ordinators providing their co-curricular learning, and these incredibly talented people are supported by a team of equally talented office administrators. This hard working and dedicated team is the engine room of our myriad co-curricular programs, managing every process, student registration and student list as well as all the logistics required to support the interests and passions of 2,300+ students plus external families who use the Aquatic Centre.

GMCPA Theatre

How lucky we are to have a Theatre team that brings a wealth of professional experience to the technical, design, safety, production management and front house operations for all shows and events in our Gillian Moore Centre for Performing Arts (GMCPA). In addition to the professional qualities they bring to each Pymble production, our dynamic duo also provides technical training for staff and students, manages all bookings and oversees venue maintenance.

Vision Valley

Over at our other stunning campus at Arcadia, the mighty Vision Valley (VV) team has been welcoming a range of guests this year, including church, sports, First Nations and other school groups. In Term 1, VV was also home to 125 Pymble and Riverview students in Year 9 who attended one of two Residential Programs for four weeks, where they were guided by Outdoor Education staff on expeditions, car mechanic courses, scaling up and down the sides of cliffs and working on their Teaching and Learning projects, including architectural designs for the Vision Valley master plan and and directing their very own musical. To ensure everything functions safely and perfectly for all guests, the VV team manages the cleaning and maintenance of 97 acres of land, four lodges, the main centre and all outdoor education equipment – this is in addition to upgrading VV’s amphitheatre stage and outdoor classroom, and renovations to Echidna Lodge in time for the arrival of the next group of Pymble and Riverview students in Term 2. The team is excited about hosting their first Holiday Camp during the upcoming Easter break, when they will welcome 100 Pymble Junior School girls and their friends for a week of fun and games in the great outdoors.

Health Care Centre and Wellbeing team

The kind, caring souls in our Health Care Centre have soothed, tended and cared for approximately 1,300 students this term, and organised and delivered flu vaccinations to more than 300 Boarding students and staff. The team strive hard to create a ‘vibe’ of kindness and care – a gift to all that walk through the door. We are also blessed with the services of a wonderful team of psychologists who work closely with our Health Care team and Wellbeing leaders to support students and their families in challenging times and to promote positive mental health among our community.

As you can see, this is a huge list but it’s by no means a complete list as we also rely on a range of other professional teams, such as our sub-contracted cleaners, plumbers, electrician and painters, our fabulous new caterers (who look after our Boarders so well), as well as a number of dedicated individuals who work on Master Planning, Risk and Policy management, Project Management, Archives and Executive Administration support. If I have missed anyone, my sincere apologies for the unintended oversight. Please know you are valued for who you are and what you bring to our big, beautiful family.

There’s a famous quote saying people come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. We close out the term with deep gratitude for the people of Pymble, past, present and future, the unique gifts and talents they bring and the significant role each person plays in shaping our lives.

Have a wonderful break, stay safe, and see you in Term 2.

Can you believe it’s the end of term? Wow! It’s been a busy term and a term full of wonder, curiosity, questioning, creativity and hard work by our girls. I am very proud of them all. A special shout out to our amazing Kindergarten girls who have given their first term of schooling their absolute all -they are justifiably exhausted and very ready for a break over these holidays. I hope they are as proud of themselves as we all are of them!

I want to give a shout out to our Year 6 girls who have worked so hard to lean into leadership this term. Whilst it’s not always easy being a leader, these girls have done an amazing job of modelling our College values and looking for opportunities to make a positive difference in our school and wider community. Last week two Year 6 girls; Ellie Lau and Daisy Scarborough showed immense courage and Pymble pride as they presented their learning to our College Board, and this week Polly Hargraves, Arabella Hoang and Annabel Makeham will show their courage and leadership when they present to our K-12 College staff on Thursday about their learning experiences.

Thank you to all of you who take the time to say a thank you to our amazing Junior School staff; our Admin team and our teaching team. I feel so honoured to work alongside these dedicated professionals and know how much your gratitude means so much to them. In return, I would like to thank you all for your ongoing trust in us and for your support. Thank you to all of you who have given your time to help with events and to support your daughter at her Windows into Learning this term. For those of you whose work commitments mean you can’t attend during the school day (which I totally relate to as I was very rarely able to be at school events for my own daughters), thank you for your support which is evident through you reading these newsletters, reading our Portal notices and in the way in which you support and empower your daughter to give her best in her learning.

For those of you who are heading off on travels around Australia and overseas; please travel safely and enjoy your family adventures. I know many of our girls are going to enjoy time with grandparents whom they haven’t seen for a couple of years, so I wish you much joy with these special reunions. We look forward to hearing all about your experiences from the girls when we come back together next term.

Pedalling our own Smoothies!

Our Junior School Hall was a whir of wheels last week when our girls from Years 2 to 6 pedalled their hearts out to blend their own smoothies and to raise money for charity at the same time. Thank you for supporting this JSPG initiative. A huge thank you to the large group of volunteers who gifted their time on the day (and in the lead up to this huge event) to bring it to life for our girls. The event ran so smoothly and many girls told me this was a highlight of their Junior School year.

We love worms! – building a more sustainable school

A shout out to our Term 1 Sustainability Captains and to our phenomenal Semester 1 Sustainability Leaders; Georgia Friedel and Charlotte Pang, who have led a focus on composting our fruit and vegetable scraps in our Junior School worm farms.  Thank you to our Head of Horticulture, Mrs Sarah Shields, who met with these girls to teach them about caring for worms. As an avid gardener, I am proud of these girls and the way they are striving to encourage us all to be mindful of how we use our food waste.

Around the Grounds Mrs Kate Giles, Lead Coordinator (K-3)

The girls were so excited to be together in House groups to work on their first whole school service activity for the Welcoming Refugee Project. They channelled their creativity to create postcards to welcome refugees around the world, working together to support each other, with our youngest and oldest girls working together. The Bezos family Foundation will donate $5 to refugee aid organisations for every postcard created so collectively our Junior School have raised over $4000 through this event!

ySafe presented to Year 7 and Year 8 last week, covering topics such as: Cyber Bullying and online Content, Online Wellbeing and Sexting and the Law. Students reflected on what they learnt:

On Friday Week 9, the middle school participated in a program and presentation run by an Australian cyber safe company known as Y-Safe. Georgia, from Y-Safe, presented a short cyber safety slideshow about social media apps such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Be Real. She informed us about what we should do if we observe cyberbullying, who to report it to, and the importance of understanding what we should and shouldn’t be sharing with others online. Georgia reinforced the importance of reflecting before posting something online. This was an important message for the middle school to hear given how prevalent social media use is among our age group.  We must always reflect before using social media to communicate with others and consider whether what we are posting is appropriate and whether it will negatively affect someone else. I believe this presentation was timely considering we are at the perfect stages in our lives to learn how to make positive and healthy choices and learn how to effectively deal with cyberbullying.

  • Stacy Sharp, Year 7

On Monday of this week we took Year 8 to Long Reef for their Mind/Body/Spirit Day. We were certainly blessed with beautiful weather that allowed the girls to really enjoy their experience in the surf. The day provided the girls with new skills and plenty of opportunities to connect to nature and build community. Thank you to Mrs Budd, our Deputy Head of MS for her commitment to making this a great day.

I would like to commend Bella Yang one of our passionate and talented Year 7 debaters. She went above and beyond at ISDA last Friday evening, offering to chair not one but three debates! She offered to stay back late as Yr 12 were short a team member and Bella did a brilliant job! She is an impressive, caring and giving member of the Middle School and an excellent role model for the other girls.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Learning Discussions on Tuesday evening and Wednesday. It is always good to be able to share insights into your daughter’s learning and celebrate her achievements across the term. I would like to wish all of our Middle School families a wonderful break over Easter and I look forward to welcoming the girls back in their winter uniforms at the start of Term 2.

A message from Mr Riley, Head of Upper School

And just like that, we reach the end of a busy term! It has been an exciting week in the Upper School, with our 1B Residential Program Adventurers making their way back Vision Valley on their Great Return, our Icebreaker event for our 2A cohort, farewelling our beautiful Rev Lorenzo in Chapel, our Year 10s learning who had won their Urban Challenge (congratulations Miss V and her Bananas in Pyjamas), and our Year Assemblies where we celebrated our Jacaranda Awards, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, and a myriad of individuals pursuits and successes.

I very much hope your daughters manage a break and some downtime over the upcoming break; they have certainly earned it. I too hope the Easter bunny is kind to them (they had an early visit on Tuesday) and that the long weekend provides an opportunity for family time. We look forward to seeing them refreshed and ready for another busy term.

From the Senior School

From the Senior School

The last few days of Term 1 have been packed for the Senior students. Our Year 12 students were engaged in a workshop with doctors, as part of the GPs In Schools program. The students were given advice regarding managing their own health care and then had the opportunity to speak directly with a GP in a smaller friendship-based group. Here they were given practical advice about the own wellbeing and could ask questions in a safe and confidential space.

Following GPs In Schools, the Year 12s enjoyed their annual Food for Thought Luncheon. Our guest speaker, Lexie Hunter (ESU, 2015) spoke with passion and wisdom about her ‘Five Spark Notes’ for success, covering such topics as managing your own social media algorithm, backing yourself and self-care and knowing your path.

We also welcomed back nearly 40 2022 graduates who came along to give their advice, tops tips and some well-earned perspective. The afternoon provided a lovely opportunity for information, friendships to be reconnected and community.

Year 11 University Immersion Day

Year 11 headed out on our inaugural University Immersion Day on Friday last week. The students were able to choose their destination of four universities – Macquarie, UTS, UNSW and ACU – to engage in the day of the life of a university student. My sincerest thanks to the universities who offered their time, student ambassadors to support our girls and access to workshops and lectures. I would also like to acknowledge the Futures Team, who worked in collaboration with the Senior School team to organise this event.

Here are the experiences from Julie, who visited Macquarie University:

As Year 11 students, we are journeying closer and closer to the end of high school, and it’s hard not to wonder about where exactly we are headed. Thankfully, the concept of tertiary education is not completely alien to us, now that Pymble has provided us with the valuable opportunity to taste college life up close through our inaugural University Immersion Day experience.

I had always wanted to learn more about the university environment. I had heard things from friends attending university, but I longed to witness it firsthand. So, I was thrilled to be able to attend Immersion Day at Macquarie University and participate in the Ancient History and Economics workshops.

It was an action-packed and rewarding day. I started off by navigating my way through Sydney’s public transport system like a full-time university student would. Then, I was able to meet and connect with current Macquarie students, who shared their stories and gave valuable tips on how to prepare for uni life. The first workshop session – Ancient History –  followed, and I was awed by the university’s extensive collection of antique artifacts excavated from Greece, Egypt and Rome, amongst other sites. I then played a game that mimicked real-life market dynamics in the Economics workshop, where my team was paid (to our great delight) with chocolate.

After that, our group was led on a campus tour, where we gained an understanding of the various facilities and opportunities that the university provided for its students to extend their learning, maintain their wellbeing and pursue their extracurricular passions. Finally, we had a Q&A session, where the friendly uni students responded to our queries and dispelled many university myths.

I think I can speak for everyone when I say that the Immersion Day was incredibly fun and immersive. We are now more confident about our future, and we are grateful to the school for giving us this chance to experience what university would be like for us – the class of 2024.

Senior School Farewell Chapel Service for Reverend Lorenzo

On Tuesday this week, the Senior School farewelled our beloved Chaplain, Reverend Lorenzo, in a special Senior School Chapel Service.

My sincerest thanks to all the students who took part in the service, reading Bible passages, saying prayers, reading our special story, singing and playing the piano and thanking Lorenzo on our behalf. All students showed their care and respect for Lorenzo during the service, and I was very proud to be a part of this with all of our girls. It was a beautiful service, full of love and appreciation.

Lorenzo has been a tower of strength, wisdom and love for the students and staff over the past twelve years. His care and presence in our daily lives and at all of our special events has been much appreciated and, as the girls said, he has been a positive influence on all of our lives with his consistent messages around loving and accepting ourselves and accepting and caring for others.

We presented Rev Lorenzo with a specially made stole, which he wore proudly for the rest of the service. My grateful thanks to Mrs Meredith Myles, who sewed this for us.

Finally, best wishes to all Senior School families for a safe and happy Easter break. May you find some time to spend together, and I hope the girls give themselves some much needed rest. Looking forward to seeing you all next term.

None of this would happen without our amazing Boarding team and I thank them for the energy, commitment and care they give so generously. I would also like to acknowledge all our other Pymble staff including our Day school staff, the Facilities team and our Catering crew who work tirelessly to make Pymble such a wonderful place to live. Most importantly, I thank our Pymble families who demonstrate deep trust in allowing their beautiful girls to stay with us during term time.

Lynda Hart

In usual Boarding form, we made sure we made the most of every opportunity and on Monday evening our Police Liaison Officer, Lynda Hart, spoke with the Boarders about public transport use, digital identity, the legal implications of sending and/or receiving inappropriate photos, theft, vaping and the legal implications of vaping. Our Boarders were fully engaged in the presentation and it was great to have them asking thoughtful and relevant questions.

If you would like more information on online safety, the E-safety commission Parent webpage includes a range of information that will be helpful for parents and carers. See below some resources that are considered to be most relevant for families:

  • Parent and Carer webinar series on a range of key online safety topics. There are a range of topics across the year – all are free of charge.
  • Key issues and advice for parents and carers on common online safety issues and challenges.
  • Hard-to-have conversations provide some tips and prompts on how to start tricky conversations on online safety topics.
  • eSafety’s parents guide covers key online safety issues and a range of practical tips and advice on what to do if things go wrong.

Easter Egg Hunt

There was no way our Boarders were going to miss out on our Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Our new ‘hunting ground’ on the Gloucester Lawn, provided a fitting level of challenge with good scope for our ‘Easter Bunnies’ to craftily hide their eggs. I am looking forward to the girls uncovering a few very well hidden eggs in the months to come!

Onsite Learning Discussions

On Tuesday night we were fortunate to have our very own ‘Boarder Only’, face to face Learning Discussions here onsite. My deep thanks go to Mr Jake Plasket and Ms Penny Prosser for all their organisation of this event and to all our teachers who made this possible. I am hopeful this will be an annual event with the opportunity for you to meet with more of your daughter’s teachers. If you have any feedback, please send through to boarding@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au.

The Balmoral Swim – Mrs White Deputy Director of Boarding

What a morning!  The girls braved the weather on Sunday to raise money for research into children’s cancer. Our wonderful Boarders competed in the school’s relay section of the Balmoral Swim for Cancer.   We had three junior teams and one intermediate team compete. All Boarders were outstanding and fantastic ambassadors for the College. Two of our Year 10s also made their way onto the Today Show during the Weather segment.  Congratulations to all involved especially our Intermediate team who placed third. Well done to Hannah, Alice, Evie and our honorary Boarder for the day Kiera. If you would still like to donate, please click here.

It’s not too late to sign up for Eat Like a Boarder

I hope you can join us for dinner on Tuesday 25 April at 6.00pm, when you return your girls from the Term 1 break. This will be the ‘real’ experience, with you being able to enjoy the regular dinner service, just as the girls do each evening. If you would like to join us please RSVP to boarding@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au before 10 April.

A View From My Window

Hi, I’m Elke and I am from Walcha which is about four hours north of Sydney in the Northern Tablelands. Walcha is beautiful place and very seasonal – it gets hot in summer and can snow in winter. Walcha is a small town with about 1800 people. We live on a property ten minutes out of town where we run sheep and cattle. My mum also has a cafe and homewares shop where I sometimes work in the holidays. In my family there is my mum and dad, my older sister Olivia, and my older brother Dougal who are both at university in Sydney. Although I love going to school in Sydney, I always look forward to going home to the country and hanging out with my dogs Honeybee and Minty.

From the Chaplains

From the Chaplains

Easter greetings for this weekend to those of us celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, as a way of remembering God with us, God beside us and God encompassing us.

I hope as the weather changes you can find a moment to sense the message hidden as the mood shifts with the season. As it grows darker earlier, may you have moments to light a candle and sit with yourself or a loved one, and if you have your family and children around you, them as well.

Sitting together and honouring these moments can also be felt within the Jewish celebration of Passover (PESACH). This celebration is at the heart of the Jewish faith for centuries and marks the liberation of the Israelites who were freed from slavery in Egypt, and led by God.

The coolness of the weather makes one mindful of wardrobe changes and warmer clothes. Change can be welcome when we look forward to being part of it rather than resisting it. Lent has been a period of reflection and fasting for some and it is no coincidence that our Muslim brothers and sisters are also partaking of a similar practice during the holy month of Ramadan.

As we think of God amid our suffering, I turn to the work and message of Uniting World through Lent. Uniting World believes in solidarity not Charity and I do love this approach. For it is when we sit at the table together, that we partake in the sharing of that which we have been blessed with.

Last week we had the opportunity to attend an Iftar dinner hosted by Australian International Academy in Strathfield.

I had the privilege of attending this sacred meal with 11 students and two teachers from Pymble. This time was shared with Muslim students and staff in a community that housed a Hindu temple (incredible!) It is moments like these where Christ breaks through for me through sitting in solidarity with one another and sharing a friendship that shifts tolerance into harmony, and a probability into possibility.

May the risen Christ who gives us life and hope, bless us this Easter with the joy life brings and support in those times when we are challenged. Have a blessed Passover, a holy Easter, and a reflective Ramadan.

Food Technology Cookbook and Pymble Gives Back

As part of the College’s Pymble Gives Back initiative, the 2023 Food Technology captains are creating a cookbook from the recipes of the Pymble community, with all proceeds donated to Dignity.

Dignity is one of the three chosen Pymble Gives Back not-for-profit charities for 2023. The organisation empowers Australians experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness by providing a range of innovative services. These include providing emergency guest home accomodation, home cooked meals, new clothing and support workers. Dignity’s aim is to end homelessness through prevention and changing attitudes within society about those experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.

To support this chosen charity we are asking students from Kindergarten to Year 12, parents and staff to contribute a recipe that has meaning to their family. In submitting the recipe, please provide a short explanation about what makes it so special. Feel free to also upload a photo of the recipe you wish to submit.

Details about purchasing the cookbook will be released once it is complete. If you would like to contribute to this initiative, please complete this short survey and upload your treasured family recipe here.

The Senior Music Concert last Thursday was an extraordinary event that not only celebrated the prodigious performance skills of the Pymble students across Year 7 to 12 but also the dedication and expertise of staff conductors led by Mrs Sarah Turner, Head of Co-Curricular Music.

Gloucester Lawn was an incandescent and elegant setting for this concert. The event reflected everything that Pymble exemplifies: collaboration, integrity, passion and exemplary quality.

I join with Mrs Turner in thanking the Music Support whose generos support also extended to fabulous Music breakfast for the students and staff on Monday.

Huge congratulations to Mrs Hubbard and the Language Arts students for their many achievements this term which are detailed in Mrs Hubbard’s report.

Thank You And Congratulations

On Thursday 30 March all our Senior School Ensembles came together and performed for parents and friends. It was a stunning evening with a light breeze, divine lighting designed by Tom, our resident sparky, and the VET girls, sound from Brilliant Bob, culminating in a perfect evening.

Each of our ensembles took to the stage to showcase a term’s work, varying from the old (Tchaikovsky) to the new (Fiddler on the Gloaming and Flourish and Fiesta 2022). I was immensely proud of our girls and their talents, but the real thanks go to our wonderful conductors for the evening. Mr Stafford, Mr Schweinberger, Mrs Colbey, Ms Ashton, Ms Zelzter, Mr Rossman, Mrs Bruce, Mr Walmsley and Ms Ford, you continue to amaze. To the talented and unflappable Estella Roche and Gladys Uy, accompanist extraordinaire and the most brilliant Music Administration person ever. Thanks Mr Griffiths and the Executive team for your guidance and support.

Thanks too to the Music Support Group for doing what they do: support. They ensured we were all fed and watered and made sure our girls were constantly supported.

Music Breakfast

On Monday 3 April we held our Music Breakfast, kindly organised by the Music Support Group. The girls came together to eat a healthy breakfast, enjoying some frivolity to end a ridiculously busy term.

AFL

AFL

Over the weekend we had the final round of AFL matches. Pymble 1 took the field against Barker College in the Division 1 Grand-final. With a huge crowd the Senior First side put on their best display of the season, taking out the premiership with a 29 to 7 win! Pymble 1 now qualify for State Championships which will take place later in the year.

Our mighty Pymble 4 intermediate side, who were undefeated this season, came up against a strong Ravenswood, in the Division 1 Grand-final. The conditions did not suit our Pymble team and Ravenswood dug deep to get a well-deserved win.

Pymble 6 played in a Lightening Round Robin carnival and unfortunately, even though being undefeated, lost one of their matches to St Catherine’s School which resulted in them being crowned the division runners up.

Pymble 7 had the opposite experience, after only winning one match all year they were able to put together a great performance on Saturday making their way to the carnival Grand-final. Our Pymble Footballers finally clicked as a team and were able to come away with a division two premiership. Well done Pymble 7!

A big thank you to all of our wonderful coaches for their time and commitment to our students every morning at training. Rowing

2023 Australian Rowing Championships, Perth

Pymble Senior Rowers have spent the last week competing at Champion Lakes in Perth, as part of the 2023 Australian Rowing Championships. The team competed on multiple fronts, entering several events in which to test themselves against the very best rowers from around Australia.

The 1st Eight had a big week of racing, having raced a heat, repechage, and Semi-final. They finished the week on a high by winning the B-Final ranking 7th overall of the Schoolgirl’s Coxed Eight event, a fantastic achievement! Well done to Jessica Colbran (Year 12), Tilly Morgan (Year 12), Mia Booth (Year 11), Megan Wood (Year 11), Charlotte Hartin (Year 12), Holly Craig (Year 11), Catherine Walker (Year 11), Alessandra Braysich (Year 11) and Coxswain Serena Leung (Year 12).

Mia Booth, Jess Colbran, Megan Wood, and Tilly Morgan also competed in the Under 19 Women’s Quadruple Scull. They had a strong start by winning their heat in impressive fashion, before achieving bronze with a 3rd place finish in the final, beating some very fast composite crews from around the country. An excellent achievement, well done Pymble Rowers!

Skye Pockley (Year 11) and Lucy Miller (Year 12) had a great run in the Under 19 Women’s Double Scull event, having raced three times, their brilliant run ended with a 5th place finish in the Semi-final against a tough field, narrowly missing out on the final.

Charlotte Hartin (Year 12), Holly Craig (Year 11), Catherine Walker (Year 11), Alessandra Braysich (Year 11) and Serena Leung (Year 12) competed in the Under 19 Women’s Four, producing a cracking finish in the heat in which they rowed through an experienced Canberra Girls Grammar School crew to finish 3rd in the Semi-final, narrowly missing out on the final.

A big congratulations to Liesel Page (Year 12) who had a very successful Nationals campaign competing for Sydney Rowing Club and New South Wales. Liesel won an incredible four events: the Under 23 Lightweight Women’s Quadruple Scull, the Under 21 Women’s Double Scull and the Under 19 Women’s Quadruple Scull. Finally. Liesel was selected into the New South Wales Women’s Youth Eight, coming first in the Interstate race. Liesel was also awarded silver for coming 2nd in Under19 Women’s Single Scull.

The Grand-final of the Invitational Independent Schools Softball Competition took place this past Saturday with Pymble 2, our Junior Firsts, taking part. Having won their Semi-final match against Brigidine College last weekend quite comfortably, Pymble 2 had the chance to win gold against the number one seed from PLC Sydney. After being down 3 to 1 at the end of the second innings, Pymble managed to fight back to win 7 to 4 and take home the gold medal.

Grand Final Match Report

Catcher, Verity Haslam (Year 9)

On Saturday 1 April, ten excited Pymble Softballers arrived at Stanhope Gardens for the Independent Schools Grand Final against PLC Sydney.

Dressed in red, white, and navy, with ribbons flying in their hair the team looked happy and confident. Coaches Sue, Lauren, and Dale warmed up the players, and sorted them into a batting order. Spirits were high and parents were nervous. PLC Sydney batted first but the pitching efforts of up-and-coming fast pitcher Zoe Bloom (Year 8) meant that many balls could not be hit by the opposition.

Pymble batted next and despite some great hits by Addison Hartog-Smith (Year 9) and Sienna Phair (Year 9) only one player made it home. The game was close and the Pymble dads were seen pacing on the sidelines.

PLC Sydney batted again, and the score changed. PLC Sydney were in front but, not for long. Leahara Wijesuriya (Year 7) and Holly Graham (Year 9) made some big hits. Annabel Taylor (Year 8), the fastest in the team, ran like a cheetah between bases. First baseman Ruby Watson (Year 8) and catcher Verity Haslam (Year 9) managed to get several players out with their strong throws and catching skills. Isabella Eum (Year 7) was all over second base and Akshara Bhattacharya (Year 7) was fast and awesome in the outfield.  Pymble was in the lead. The final score was 7 to 4 with Pymble crowned as the Grand-final Champions.

Well done to all students that were involved, including Isabel Donald (Year 9), Ella Mitchell (Year 9), Eloisa Hunt (Year 9), and Sophia Wu (Year 9), who were away for the Grand-final but made significant contributions to a fantastic season!
