From the Principal

To an outsider, our weekly newsletter must look pretty impressive. Week after week, digital page after digital page is filled with stories, honour rolls and events celebrating our students’ achievement in all its forms – from qualifying for competitions, to getting through to the next level or round, winning, placing or simply having a go as a participant and completing a personal goal. As a high-performing school, we are blessed to achieve success on a regular basis; equally, we understand the power of celebrating success and that success looks different for everyone.

Last week’s Visual Arts Exhibition is a prime example of how we celebrate the successful completion of Year 12 major works and honour the hours of labour that go with creating these artworks, long before a mark or a ranking has been awarded. Well done to all our Year 12 students who have finished major bodies of work – whether that’s for English Extension 2, TAS or Visual Arts. Much like our dancers, musicians and dramatists who have worked so hard on their HSC performances, your perseverance and dedication to your craft are worthy of celebration. Congratulations to all students who exhibited their works, and a special shout-out to Gemma Hodge who received the Packer’s Prize for her incredible linoleum print, Palimpsest (A Room of One’s Own) and to Amelie Miller and Phoebe Mason who were awarded the Principal’s Prize for their respective works, Erasure and Sunburnt Country (Still Life on Ceramics).

It was also a great joy to celebrate our Year 12 girls as a cohort today at a special teddy bears picnic on Mollie Dive Field. Hopefully the opportunity to come together for lunch with their Compass Groups, on such a beautiful warm day, will give them the time and space to appreciate how far they have come and help to motivate them for their final Year 12 hurdle, the HSC exams.

Celebrating students’ success is as important to us as acknowledging that each learner has different goals, at different levels, and different challenges to overcome. Sometimes, success looks like a table of medals, such as those awarded to our athletes who trained so hard to achieve their best on the track and field, winning the IGSA Athletics Championships and then going on to take out the National Championships in Canberra that same weekend.

At other times, a measure of success might be learning a new skill, making a new friend, getting to school on time in the morning for one whole week or avoiding resorting to takeaway dinners on school nights – okay, I confess, that last goal is mine on the weeks when my wonderful husband and master chef, Matt, is working away!

For our Deputy Principal, Mr Justin Raymond, success meant having a go at the unbelievably gruelling challenge of The Unreasonable East 200-mile race, which saw him run from 11.00am last Tuesday until the following Friday at 9.02pm, only resting for 4 hours, 11 minutes and 8 seconds in total and finishing in sixth place overall! Having completed many different ultra-marathons, this was his first attempt at a 200-mile (or 327.3km) race and a huge personal goal to achieve, given it covered a staggering elevation of more than 10,000 metres. When asked why, Mr Raymond said: “I really value the role of challenge in shaping a rich, adventurous life and feel it is a privilege to be in a position where you can choose your challenge in life.” Congratulations Justin, we are all a little bit in awe of you right now.

Celebrating an achievement that is meaningful to you, with people who are important in your life, creates stronger relationships, boosts morale and self-confidence, and can lead to greater productivity and more success. For this reason, the College has undertaken a strategic project to audit and seek feedback on all the ways we recognise students’ success – from formal awards, appointments, badges and medals to less formal, in-situ affirmation from staff at the point of achievement – across all areas and aspects of learning.

The project sits under the Emotional Intelligence pillar in our Strategic Direction, and involves surveys of current students, alumni, parents and staff. Our aim is to ensure our traditional, formal awards retain their special significance and value, while introducing additional ways to recognise and honour consistently high effort and application that leads to measurable, observable improvement. We look forward to introducing two new awards at our Year 12 Speech Day this year, and sharing more details of how we will be expanding our process of knowing, guiding, challenging and celebrating students’ achievements across the College at the conclusion of this comprehensive strategic review.

Say hello to our HOLAs

Our Head of Learning Area – Visual Arts is Mrs Brigiat Maltese, who joined Pymble in January 2021, a “quite unforgettable” year, given it was the year of the long lockdown. A significant part of her work is teaching our Visual Arts students in Years 11 and 12.

Brigiat, what was the ‘aha’ moment that led you into teaching?

“When I was younger, being a teacher felt like the biggest dream of all. I admired my teachers – they were like role models. I have always loved Visual Arts from a young age and both my parents were always so positive about my artwork. So, it was a combination of two loves. The adult aha moment occurred when I started my first full time position within a girls’ school. Educating young women and watching them achieve goals is truly a privilege and an inspiration – one that I never tire of.”

What is the most rewarding aspect of the work you do here?

“Seeing students and staff flourish. When students and staff build resilience, make connections between knowing and understanding, challenge themselves and embrace creative and critical thinking, the outcomes are extraordinary. Teaching is a relational profession; complex and dynamic. I love working with the Visual Arts staff as well – a skilled and committed group of educators. They bring out the best in me. So, the nature of the work itself here, is truly the reward.”

What are you most proud of achieving as a Pymble HOLA?

“I think the recent Year 12 Visual Arts Exhibition (with over 500 items of work!) was quite an achievement in terms of scale but also the extraordinary standard of work. The Vision Valley overnight Art Camps have also been an achievement as well as the restructuring of all Visual Arts Teaching programs from Year 7 to 12. The outcomes of this are bearing fruit.”

Work aside, tell us a fun fact about you…

“How about two? I’ve had my own artwork selected for exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW – three times. I’ve always had a love of horses and riding.”

Finish this sentence: If I could impart one life lesson to our students, it would be…

“Recognise that ‘mistakes’ are opportunities for reflection, redirection, and refinement. The goal is growth not perfection.”

Celebrating our Dads!

Wishing all the dads, grandfathers and father figures in our community a wonderful day on Sunday, hopefully spending some time with people you love. In the lead-up to Father’s Day, we will be sharing a glimpse into the lives of some of our staff members who happily juggle their roles at Pymble along with being loving and busy fathers. Look out for the campaign on our social media, or you can read more on our website. Happy Father’s Day to all the special men in our lives and thank you for being role models for all our young people, especially our Pymble girls.

Learning in Partnership

It was wonderful to see so many of our Year 3 parents at our Windows into Learning last week. Thank you, Year 3 parents, for the support you give our teachers, and your daughters in their learning. Our Year 3 parents, together with their daughters, designed and constructed a rocket ship, based upon the features and attributes of three-dimensional objects.  The girls worked together with their parents, justifying their choice of 3D object using their understanding of vertices, edges and faces. Creativity and collaboration were key skills being developed during this process.

It’s been an exciting week for Year 3 families as we had a wonderful evening yesterday with girls and their parents working together to make animal puppets. The girls, assisted by their equally enthusiastic parents, coded a micro:bit to bring their character to life so they could perform as part of a small play about the magic of teamwork. We look forward to more Tech Connect events in 2024. Thank you to our Head of STEM, Mr Brown, for leading this initiative for our Junior School community

Congratulations!

Huge congratulations to Zara Ware (Year 4) who is now our National U10 Springboard champion, winning two gold medals at Nationals. This is a phenomenal achievement. Congratulations to Emily Long who came 5th in the National U10 Springboard competition. Both girls show great skill and maturity as they compete and their success reflects their passion and dedication to their sport.

Congratulations to our Eisteddfod dancers who placed 1st (Jazz) and 3rd (Lyrical) in their eisteddfod last weekend. These teams have had phenomenal success throughout their season.

Good luck to our ballerinas who are performing the much awaited performance The King of the Polar Bears tomorrow and on Saturday. These girls have been working with dedication and passion over the last weeks to prepare their performance. I can’t wait to watch it tomorrow!

Thank you to our K-pop dance leaders

A huge shout out to Sophia Guo, Estelle Macolino, Lyann Shih, Gloria Yang and Reese Zhang who planned and led a fun filled and high energy K-pop dance challenge for our Year 4 to 6 girls. These amazing Year 6 girls worked together to bring K-pop to our Junior School on Monday lunchtime this week. Over 100 girls joined in the fun in our hall and the Year 6 girls encouraged others to join in and to have a go at learning the choreography. I am so proud of the way these girls celebrated others who showed courage in joining in and applauded those who mastered the choreography.

Year 1 visit Vision Valley for Outdoor Education – Michelle Cook, Year 1 Co-ordinator

On Tuesday 29 August, Year 1 excitedly boarded the bus for our Outdoor Education experience at Vision Valley. For some of the Year 1 cohort, this was their first visit to the Vision Valley campus. During the day, students were encouraged to explore the beautiful natural environment, step outside their comfort zone, and challenge themselves.

Our first activity involved a scenic bushwalk around the lake and throughout the surrounding hillside. The highlight of the bushwalk was sitting around an open fire and cooking marshmallows. We even got to cook two each and they were delicious!

We then formed small groups for an exciting and challenging orienteering activity that saw us utilising our mapping and position skills to locate various hidden signs throughout the bush.

Our final activity involved us challenging ourselves and using our problem-solving skills to build a shelter for a duck that would withstand the wind and the rain. The girls even amazed themselves with their clever designs. We can’t wait for our next visit to beautiful Vision Valley.

My favourite part was toasting the marshmallows and eating them. – Evelyn Sang

I liked the finding the clues when orienteering and the bush walk. – Sophia Thach

Our group had so much fun orienteering, but it was really challenging. – Neve Sadananda and Violet Li

I loved finding a big stick to use to cook the marshmallows on the fire – they were delicious! – Chloe Huang

A message from Mr. Riley, Head of Upper School

A big thank you to Mrs Harrison who steered the ship last week and afforded me the opportunity to travel to New Zealand to visit exchange schools. I had a thoroughly enjoyable few days at Woodford House in Havelock North, helping to settle Emily, Ellie, and Phoebe into their new home for the next five weeks. Woodford is very different to Pymble with only 350 girls from Year 7 to 13, and the majority of those being boarders. It is a wonderful opportunity for our girls, with Tessa and Sophia having joined last weekend, to experience a culture different to their own. I was particularly taken by the Chapel service in Maori and their amazing singing. I also visited a fabulous new school in Auckland that we hope to include in our 2024 Exchange offering – stay tuned on that front!

On the theme of Year 10 exchange, we also bid farewell to Maddy, Victoria, Abby and Sarah, and have enjoyed seeing highlights of our girls currently in South Africa, Scotland, Japan, Argentina, and New Zealand, and those girls here with us in Australia.

In Week 5 a group of Year 9s and I accompanied their Heads of Year to Knox Grammar School for a new focus group aimed at creating more collaboration between the schools and their year in 2024. The girls enjoyed a warm welcome from their counterparts and went to work discussing opportunities across a broad spectrum and size. They are now busy planning a return visit to Pymble in Week 8, and look forward to sharing an update with their cohort at the end of term.

Congratulations to the following students for their fantastic recent achievements:

  •  Lily Ikawa who achieved some remarkable results at the recent Ryde Piano Competition including a 2nd (Australian section), 3rd (Chopin Etude), and HC (for 15 and 16 years Piano solo)

The week the Year 12s had an interesting presentation from the Ex-Students’ Union. Guests from the ESU spoke to the Year 12 students about how that organisation can assist them in their post school life, in Australia and globally. The ESU is a vast network of ex-Pymble students who are very ready to provide and advice and mentorship. As Year 12 students ready to finish their formal schooling, they were also welcomed them ‘into the fold’ of the ESU. Interested students signed up and received a lovely gift as a memento and for good luck in their HSC examinations.

Year 12 Visual Arts Bodies of Work Exhibition

Congratulations to all our Visual Arts students for the tremendously creative art that you have all produced for your HSC. The diversity of media and range of sources of inspiration was overwhelming. Always a highlight of the year, you certainly did not disappoint. The ideas that you communicated through your art were so personal and well-considered. Many thanks to your teachers and mentors who have guided you all through this process.

Year 12 Shout Out to Spring! Picnic

Year 12 Compass classes will be enjoying the last of the winter sunshine this week, with a Shout Out to Spring! Picnic on Mollie Dive Field. Students should bring their own lunch or organise with their Compass classes for a group effort. This will be a great opportunity to get out in the fresh air and spend some time with each other, resting and relaxing.

Year 11 Examinations

I would like to congratulate the maturity and good sense of the Year 11 students as they began their first week of Yearly Examinations this week, and heartfelt thanks to the Year 12s who are showing their care and respect of their younger KM sisters.

Lendlease – Future Workspace Forum

On Thursday 24th August, Harriet and Saskia – the Geography and Business Studies captains, attended a Future Workspace forum at Barangaroo. The forum was hosted by Lendlease, the company who built the Barangaroo Reserve. The event was an opportunity for Harriet and Saskia to contribute their opinions about what the workplace in 2035 and beyond should be like. Harriet and Saskia connected with industry professionals and like-minded students and were challenged to ponder future workplace scenarios. They were given hands on design thinking-based activities, which made them reflect on how they see their own working future.

GBE students are regularly exposed to relevant and varied work experience opportunities as we prepare students for an ever-changing world. Attending work experience provides students with practical skills and knowledge and empowers them to explore non-traditional career paths.

Here is a reflection from Harriet and Saskia:

On Thursday week 6, we went to the Lendlease future workspace forum in Barangaroo. It was a great day and such a beneficial experience in learning more about workplaces and the different things that go on behind the scenes of a business to keep their staff happy and healthy at work.

We learned about how workplaces have changed in the past and will continue to change in the future. Not only did it allow us to expand our awareness of jobs/opportunities available, but it also helped us to consider what pathway and university courses we could go down in the future.

We also learned a lot about the sustainability of the International Towers, including the use maggots to break down food and paper waste, which was extremely insightful!

Term 3 Key Dates

28 August to 8 September – Year 11 Examinations

31 August – Year 12 Shout Out to Spring! Picnic

Monday 18 September – Year 12 Picnic Day at Clontarf

Wednesday 20 September – Year 12 Honouring Ceremony

Thursday 21 September – Year 12 Speech Day, Year 12 Final Chapel Service and Year 12 Valedictory Dinner

From the Boarding School

From the Boarding School

Our partnership with the Uniting Church is so special for our Boarding family. We have especially appreciated Reverend Karen joining our fortnightly Chapel services and, as you have previously read, our biannual visits from the congregation are deeply valued.

On Tuesday members of our Boarders’ Representative Council met with Reverend Karen to discuss how we could extend our relationship with the church. There were many great suggestions, withus ultimately agreeing that our Boarders would return to our pre-covid quarterly visits to the church. Reverend Karen is determined to ensure that these services are meaningful for the Boarders and there will be a number of options to attend.

We also spoke about ways in which our extended church family could be involved with our Boarders. There were lots of ideas including Sunday roasts, sharing of skills such as knitting and a special support group for our new Boarders.  If you have suggestions, please do not hesitate to send then through.

Our fabulous athletes

On Tuesday night we were thrilled to hear of the well-deserved recognition of three of our fabulous Boarders. Head Boarder Abigail (Abby) Ballhausen won the most Prestigious Award of the night – The Ripple Boyle Trophy for Commitment, Spirit, and Excellence for her contribution to Pymble Athletics and Cross Country. Year 10 Boarder, Lana Pike won the Distance Award and Year 7 Boarder, Madeleine (Mads) Gaden was awarded the Encouragement award for Sprints.

It was also wonderful to hear our Boarders being gracious and grateful for the opportunities they have been afforded at Pymble. Grace Peters was a particular standout as she acknowledged the wonderful contribution and the positive impact of Jack Pennington in the athletics program.

Our newest Boarder, Grace Townsend also did us proud, representing Pymble, along with day girl Samara Bond, and was interviewed and filmed by a film crew on Main Oval yesterday for Edstart and NSWCIS. The girls will feature in a promotional video for NSWCIS Athletics Championships. I look forward to sharing the video with you in the coming weeks.

Looking forward to 2024

With our new Year 7 Boarding House scheduled for completion in 2024 and a vertical structure planned for our Year 8 to 11 girls, we have much planning to do. This week we sent a survey to our Boarders to seek their feedback on how they see the new structure working, which House they would like to reside in and with whom. In the weeks to come we will send a similar survey to parents and we will pool this information with the view to making the best decision for each girl. In the meantime, if you have any questions or suggestions about the vertical system please do not hesitate to call or email me.

Love It – Mrs White, Deputy Director of Boarding

Last weekend was packed with plenty of action. We welcomed the Riverview Year 11 Boarders for a trivia night on Friday. Thanks to Erica and Holly, who volunteered to run the evening. The weather was perfect on Sunday as the Boarders headed to the Northern Beaches for a picnic. The Boarders enjoyed the glorious weather and even braved the cool water temperatures. On Sunday afternoon, we welcomed Mrs. Myles back into Boarding to assist with the Father’s Day gifts. These have turned out so well, and we can’t wait for the dads to receive their gifts this weekend. We will post photos of these next week so we don’t ruin the surprise 😉

Over the upcoming weekend, our Garden Party arrangements will commence. We’ll kick things off with our preparation of rocky road at Boarders Get Baking on Friday. Following that, Saturday will be dedicated to the craft of candle making. As Sunday arrives, we’ll be venturing to Macquarie for an enjoyable ice skating session. Additionally, the much-anticipated King of the Polar Bears performance, featuring all our talented ballerinas, is eagerly anticipated at school on Friday.

Boarding Community Event

On the eve of the Garden Party we look forward to celebrating with all our families at the Warrawee Club. This event follows our Boarder Parent Group meeting at 3.00pm and, most likely a few final preparations for the Garden Party. All Boarders are required to be in attendance on this night and we hope our families can join in the fun too.

View From My Window

My name is Georgie Stanley, and I am 14 years old, and live in Mudgee in Central West New South Wales. I am in Year 8 and have been boarding since Year 7.

I live around 10 minutes out of town on 25 acres, and Mudgee is around three and a half hours away from Pymble. I live with my mum Kim and my dad Bertie, my younger brother James, our labradoodle Bella, and my brother’s bird and guinea pigs. My parents both work in their own business as finance people and they have been doing this for around eight years.

Mudgee is a big tourist spot because of its wineries, food, and its countryside. The things I love about it are the cafes, the restaurants, and all the nice people. I also like going on walks with my dog and when my family from the Central Coast come up for Christmas.

When I look out my window, I can see the flats leading up to the town. Behind the town are the hills and at night when the sun sets the hills turn a beautiful bright orange and pink colour. I always look forward to coming back to Boarding after the holidays so I can see my friends again. As much as I love being at my home in Mudgee, I will always see Pymble as my home away from home.

Boarder of the Week

Please join us in congratulating Hannah Thornton, our well deserving Boarder of the Week. Hannah, who joined Pymble Boarding from Dubbo in Year 8, has always embodied team spirit and kindness, which was on full display over the weekend. Hannah kindly gave up her time during exam preparation to cheer on the Boarders and was a friendly presence at hockey on Saturday. Hannah ended up stepping in to play on the team, without hesitation when they were short players. She was a positive presence, encouraging her Boarding sisters, and they could not be more appreciate of her efforts. In house, Hannah is always assisting staff, supporting peers and actively participates in the Boarding Community. Congratulations Hannah we are lucky to have you with us!

From the Chaplains

From the Chaplains

You may have heard this before: that God is love.

You may have read or heard the powerful words from the book of 1 John, chapter 4 verses 7-8, which was written in Ephesus probably between 95 – 100 CE:

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

Last week at school we celebrated the International Day of Peace with students making peace doves, and chapel services dedicated to inter-faith understanding and peace between all people and nations.

Reverend Manas Ghosh from St John’s Uniting Church Wahroonga came to share with Year 11 and 12 his wisdom from years of working in the Inter-Faith space from within the Uniting Church.

He spoke about the importance of us looking at each other’s faces and seeing not differences, or otherness, but our brothers and sisters.

“We are all children of God, part of the one family; humanity.”

Each year Rev. Ghosh organises an Inter-Faith prayer service, and this year it will be held at Knox Chapel on Thursday 21 September at 11.00am. Some of the Pymble Religion and Ethics students will be attending, and the Year 10 Elective Music students will be singing. All are welcome.

God is Peace. God is Love.

God is not just loving. God IS love. God’s very essence, or nature, is love.

Although our limited human minds cannot really ever hope to grasp this, we can get a snippet of understanding of the depths of God’s love when we look at the mystery of the Trinity.

The three persons of God. Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer.

Three in one and one in three.

They are not people – for they are not human. Not human at all. But they are each distinct. One will, but distinct. Different, but the same.

So, for want of a better English word, we’ll call them persons.

We have another English word that we can use to describe the union of these three – the ‘Godhead’. Or, we can just call them ‘God’.

Together, these three persons are perfect. Whole. Complete. God does not need anything additional to Godself to make God complete. Not us. Not anything.

Now imagine these three persons are united in a kind of eternal, dynamic, ever-moving, ever-present dance. A kind of fluid, never-still, never-static, ever-flowing movement of relationship. It’s an eternal movement of perfect self-giving, self-giving, self-giving – and mutual receiving, receiving, receiving – between the three of them.

In other words, a movement or relationship of perfect love. And this blissful, self-giving love is not just their combined action, it is their very identity. Together, they ARE love.

So here at Pymble, we chaplains try to let our students know that they are loved by a God who IS love.

And that we as a community need to try to life in a way that is self-giving (and receiving) – welcoming in the other, inviting in the stranger, celebrating that which is different or distinct from ourselves. This is love.

Inclusion, not exclusion.

Acceptance, not judgement.

Invitation, not banishment.

In the spirit of non-judgemental inclusion, acceptance, invitation and love, Pymble Secondary students enjoyed a ‘Wear it Purple’ mufti day last Friday, with the gold coin donations going to the Wear it Purple organisation, which provides mental health and other support for the LGBTQIA+ community.

I am proud to be part of a Uniting Church community, in which we celebrate peace, inter-faith understanding and unity in diversity – a community which fosters a love for the other.

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

Blessings on your week.

We look forward to celebrating all things Pymble with you on the night.

Garden Party

It is just over two weeks to go until Garden Party and planning is in full flight. There are new rides to enjoy this year including the riptide and old favourites like the dragon wagon rollercoaster, turbo flyers and the giant slide. To purchase your Unlimited Rides Pass, please click here.

As the planning continues in the lead up to the big day, the Pymble Parent Association is holding a donation drive for toys, second-hand uniforms and textbooks. Donations can be dropped off from 7.30am to 8.30am and 2.30pm to 3.30pm daily in the Centenary Car Park drop off lane. Please note items that you donate must be washed and in good condition and, where appropriate, on sturdy hangers. If you would like to assist with the Second-Hand Uniform and Resources stall on the day, please sign up here.

Father’s Day

We are delighted to be welcoming more than 500 dads on site tomorrow for the Father’s Day Charity Sausage Sizzle on Main Oval. The event begins at 12.00pm with Junior School girls arriving first and Secondary School students entering the oval from 12.40pm.

Given this is a whole school event with around 3,000 people venturing onto Main Oval for lunch we would like to remind parents and carers of the following;

  • College gates will be closed for the event from 11.00pm to 2.00pm. No vehicles will be allowed onsite.
  • There is parking in the surrounding streets (particularly Avon Road and Pymble Road) but spaces are always at a premium and public transport is advised.
  • Grey House walk will be open for those parking on Pymble Avenue.
  • All girls have been ordered a sausage. If they are on campus on the day and not marked absent they will be charged for their meal. Please remind your daughter to come to Main Oval to enjoy lunch. All retail outlets will be closed over lunchtime.
  • We encourage all students and parents to use the toilets in the Gillian Moore Centre for Performing Arts and not James Kelso Pavilion for this event.

We look forward to seeing so many dads on campus tomorrow to celebrate! Thank you for supporting our chosen charity, the Prostate Foundation of Australia.

Vision Valley

Our Vision Valley campus has been busier than ever supporting our Year 9 Residential program, as well as our Outdoor Education program and several parent daughter events, and we hope to provide an opportunity for all families to experience this beautiful location during their time with us.

Last weekend dads and daughters from Year 6 camped onsite, enjoying a campfire and plenty of outdoor activities. We encourage parents to take the opportunity to connect with their daughter at our second campus as they become available; each camp offers something slightly different but are equally as enjoyable.

The current events on the Vision Valley calendar are;

  • Year 10 Mothers and Daughters Day, Sunday 8 October from 9.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Year 5 Dads and Daughters Camp, Saturday 14 to Sunday 15 October
  • Year 4 Parent Daughter Camp, Saturday 21 to Sunday 22 October

To book for these events, please click here.

Enrolments

This week our Enrolments team hosted an Open Morning in the Junior School, welcoming 72 families onsite to see first-hand the magnificent College grounds and exemplary academic program Pymble offers its students. The morning was a great success, and we hope to see many faces return in years to come.

Term 3 does not slow down for the Enrolments team as they host the annual Pymble in Orange event next Friday 8 September where we look forward to catching up with current and prospective Boarding families.

As we move towards the end of term, the complexity and scope of rehearsal processes intensify as students prepare for final performing arts events.

Celebrations of student work in Dance, Drama, Language Arts and Music will resound over the next few weeks.

Of immediate anticipation tomorrow is the HSC Academic Music showcase in the Music Gallery and the opening night of the RAD ballet performance of the King of the Polar Bears.

Recent success in eisteddfods, competitions and performance events for Dance, Music and Drama must also be triumphantly acknowledged.

In the final weeks of Term 3 also come a myriad of events to celebrate the journeys of the Year 12 students of 2023. So many of these students have enjoyed fulfilling and joyous experiences in the performing arts and it is fitting that many of them will be involved in the final valedictory events.

Diving

Diving

Monday 21 August to Sunday 27August School Sport Australia Diving Championships were held at Sydney Olympic Park. These Championships provide the experience of competing with and against the best divers from across Australia and New Zealand.

This year Pymble was represented at School Sport Australia Diving Championships by Angela Xenofontos (Year 9), Méa Shires (Year 9), Emily Long (Year 4) and Zara Ware (Year 4). To be selected in a School Sport Australia team is a privilege and honour and is always the result of commitment to training and competition in the year leading to the event.

During this week the divers competed in springboard, individual knockout, synchronised diving, and Team synchronised events. With the daily training and competition throughout the week the divers executed hundreds of dives. In addition to the competition the NSW team participated in an educational experience to Darling Harbour which allowed for team social interactions and complimented a great week in the pool.

The educational outcomes gained from this week cannot be learned in the classroom. These Championships provide students the opportunity to pursue personal goals in diving, demonstrate sportsmanship, leadership and forge and renew relationships from their team and with their peers from other teams.

School Sport Australia Sportsmanship Award

Congratulations to Angela Xenofontos (Year 9) who was recognised for demonstrating these qualities and those of sportsmanship and fair play throughout the Championships and was awarded a prestigious School Sport Australia Sportsmanship Award.

We commend Angela, Méa, Emily and Zara and the NSW team on a spectacular week of diving, fun and friendship. igsa Netball Round 6

We kicked off round 6 of igsa Netball on Saturday 26 August with lots of great Netball on display.

Congratulations to Team of the Week Pymble 16. This team had a hard game on Saturday, however listened very well to feedback and came home strong to win the game on the bell with a penalty pass or shot on the bell. Well done Pymble 16.

Sienna Melton (Year 8), Annika Maslin (Year 8), Charlotte Henderson (Year 8), Matilda Schmidt (Year 9), Stella Paterson (Year 8), Amelia Gross (Year 8), Gabriella Nutman (Year 8), Chloe Ayton (Year 8), Charlotte Blaiklock (Year 8), Livia Armstrong (Year 9),

This team has been awarded the Brave Team award for the week!

As we head into the last round of Netball, I would like to remind all students to turn up to both training sessions and games on time please. Especially if your games are offsite at another venue, make sure you allow time for traffic and parking. This will ensure that all players have a proper warmup, and the coaches can have their teams ready to go for the start of the game.

2023 Australian Netball Championships

Our 2023 Captain of Netball Grace Whyte (Year 12) and former Netball Captain Audrey Little (Alumni 2021) were part of the QBE Swifts Academy that returned from the 2023 Australian Netball Championships with Silver Medals after a fantastic week of action in Queensland.

The Championships were contested by feeder teams of 2023 Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) clubs, and State Bodies which do not hold an SSN license. In 2021 the ANC replaced the Australian Netball League as the feeder competition to SSN.

Congratulations girls on a wonderful achievement.

Orienteering

Orienteering

Anna Smart (Year 5) attended the NSW Schools Orienteering Championships over the weekend and walked away with some impressive results.

Day 1 held at Kings School saw Anna take out second fastest time in race 1 in the W9/10A Group. Unfortunately, during race 2 she miss-punched and therefore her time didn’t count but would have come in 1st or 2nd had it have been correct.

Day 2 was held in the Blue Mountains. Anna did extremely well to navigate in the bush for the first time and she came away with 4th place. Congratulations Anna.

She enjoyed the Blue Mountains race so much that after she finished the last race, Anna then did the next level up W11/12A map for fun and showed her family how to Orienteer.

A big thank you to Barbara Hill from Bold Horizons for showing her the ropes and for helping on the weekend. It’s great to see how far Anna has come from not knowing how to read maps or orienteer to being able to confidently go to new schools and navigate the bush on her own.

Orienteering contributes to enhanced fitness and challenges the mind. It offers independent skills in navigating and problem solving. Registrations for Orienteering are termly and offered to students from Years 5 to 12. Term 4 registrations will open at 12.00pm (Midday) on Wednesday 6 September. For further information, please contact Mrs Chris Boland cboland@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au.

NSW State Interschools Snowsports

Congratulations to our 37 athletes who competed at the 2023 NSW Interschools Championships in Perisher over the past week. With 121 entries, this was our largest team to take on the State Interschools Championships in many years. The week started with our Junior School students leading the charge and making Pymble a force to be reckoned with!

18 students from Year 2 to Year 12 took part in our first ever Cross Country on snow training in Perisher. It was so great to see the comradery between the athletes from all year groups. There are not many sports which have this opportunity to unite the whole team from both the Junior and Secondary School. For many of our girls, this was their first-time taking part in Cross Country Skiing (or even putting on skis). This is a massive testament to the “can do” attitude from the girls creating this moment even more special.

I would just like to say a massive thank you to all the parents/carers and families who have spent many hours driving down the freeway, booking accommodation, hiring equipment, and managing work commitments to give this Pymble team every opportunity to achieve their absolute potential! This program does not run without the families behind the team, and I am truly grateful for your support, volunteering on snow and offering to assist in any way possible.

As a Pymble team we have achieved some outstanding results!

1st – Primary Overall Girls Schools Champions

1st – Primary Girls Schools Skiing Champions

1st – Primary Girls Schools Snowboarding Champions

3rd – Primary Girls Schools Cross Country

Hilary Eyers (Year 6) – 2nd Moguls Division 4

Evelyn Zhu (Year 2) – 3rd Alpine Division 4

Additionally in the Team component, our girls put on a excellent display of teamwork, grit and determination in some pretty challenging conditions.

Division 5 Snowboard Cross – 3rd

Division 5 Snowboard GS –    3rd

Division 4 Moguls – 2nd

Division 6 Alpine – 1st

Division 4 Cross Country Classic – 3rd

Swim Race League

On Wednesday 23 August Pymble Ladies’ College held a swim race league against Barker College.

A Race League is a head-to-head competition with no timing, just good old-fashioned hand on the wall placings. Each team was awarded points for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placings. The schools were divided into 2 teams, Pymble Scarlet and Navy, Barker Blue and Red. Pymble had 25 girls competing from Year 3 to 6. The cheering was loud and there was some fast swimming. Swimming Parent Picnic and Dual Meet at Narrabeen

On Sunday 27 August our Junior Pymble Swim Team took part in our first Swimmer Parent Team bonding picnic at Narrabeen Lake. This was followed by a Dual Meet with Narrabeen Swim Club held at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation Centre in Narrabeen. The picnic was a huge success with over 30 families attending!

We started the day with some good old-fashioned picnic games where swimmers, parents, and siblings were all involved and had the chance to challenge themself and have a great time together. The picnic games we played were, 3 legged races, egg and spoon races, potato sack races, egg throwing competition and many more. After such a successful day we had some great feedback from our Parents such as:

Parent 1: “My child and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the AMAZINGLY fun day today! From the picnic location to the fun family games, and then onto the swimming- you both planned every single detail, and it was brilliant!!”

Parent 2: “You went above and beyond your role as coaches, including enthusiastic demonstrations of the games. The families enjoyed the chance to socialize outside of the pool as a team. Pymble Swimming is lucky to have you.

Parent 3:” My family and I had an amazing time, and my daughter is still talking about the games we played together. What a great way to create some special memories. We are looking forward to the next Parents and Swimmers picnic”.

The fun then moved to the pool our first Dual Meet Pymble V Narrabeen. A point score system was in place to determinate the winning Team.

The meet was very exciting, full of races and a lot of fun. The Pymble Team swam every race with their heart, and we left the pool with the “2023 Pymble V Narrabeen Trophy”

Special mention to our Pymble girls: Imogen Jones (Year 7), Oriana Fenton (Year 6), Penelope Hargraves (Year 6), Carla Eibach (Year 6), Chloe Shires (Year 6), Charlotte Sadler (Year 6), Amelie Berg (Year 4), Sarah Kranes (Year 6) and Jiayi Wu (Year 5)

A big thank you goes to our Pymble coaches Michelle and Sara for organising, planning, and running the day, and goes to all the parents and swimmers who attended the Picnic for the amazing day we all had.

Congratulations to the students of Mrs Jones, Ms Worth and Ms Bryce. The piano students performed on Monday night to proud parents in the Music Gallery. The singing students performed for the Mark Moran Nursing Home residents on Friday night. It was a glowing success to see Pymble Gives Back in action. The Nursing Home residents were most appreciative, and the girls were able to meet famous Mezzo Soprano Lauris Elms.

Thank You

Our Hindson Chamber String Ensemble performed two pieces at the Junior School Open Morning to showcase their talent and provide a beautiful backdrop of music. Thanks to Mrs Colbey for preparing the girls and conducting them so well.

Congratulations

Local community representative nomination for Pymble Ladies’ College Community Consultative Committee

Do you want to contribute to your community?

Community Consultative Committees work to improve engagement on State Significant Development.

Pymble Ladies’ College Grey House Precinct is a State Significant Development (SSD-17424905) and as a condition of consent, a Community Consultative Committee (CCC) is to be established before the commencement of construction. The CCC will continue throughout construction and operation of the proposed development or other timeframe agreed by the Planning Secretary. Further details of the project can be found on the Department of Planning and Environment’s (DPE) major projects website: www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/major-projects/projects/pymble-ladies-college-grey-house-precinct

A Community Consultative Committee (CCC) is now to be established for Pymble Ladies’ College Grey House Precinct to provide a forum for open dialogue between Pymble Ladies’ College and representatives of the local community, stakeholder groups and local council on issues directly relating to the development of the Grey House Precinct. It is anticipated that the CCC will be convened from September 2023.

We are looking for a mix of volunteers who live or work locally, may be impacted by the project or are members of a local community or stakeholder group (for social or neighbourhood groups) to join Pymble Ladies’ College Community Consultative Committee*.

As a volunteer committee member, you will be expected to contribute constructively to committee discussions, attend an estimated four meetings a year, and communicate information about the project to the committee and the broader community.

If you would like to apply, please click here to view and complete the nomination form.

Completed nomination forms and a supporting letter addressing the criteria are to be sent to Professor Helen Lochhead, Independent Chairperson of the Community Consultative Committee at PLCccc2023@gmail.com

Applications close: 30 August 2023

Seeking donations for Sony Camp

Seeking donations for Sony Camp

Sony Camp provides much-needed respite for the parents and siblings of children with disabilities. When they arrive to drop of their child, the parents of our campers are gifted with a pamper pack to allow them to enjoy a week of rest and relaxation. This includes generous donations from our community such as wine, movie vouchers, gourmet food, passes to amusement parks, chocolates and spa or dinner vouchers.

The support of our community in providing these gifts is invaluable. Donations to assist the running of the camp are also greatly appreciated. This includes donations from groceries (biscuits, snacks, water bottles and fruit) and arts and craft (scrapbooking albums and photo paper) to toys/children’s books and miscellaneous materials (in particular, mattress protectors).

If you would like to donate, please drop off all items to the Upper School Office or contact mlombard@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au.
