A Message from Mrs Kate Brown, Head of Junior School
Message from Mrs Kate Brown, Head of Junior School
Role models are important, and today we began the process of onboarding our Year 5 girls into leadership for 2026. Our Spring into Leadership Day, led by Mrs Giles, Mrs Bird and the Year 5 teachers, is a chance for the Year 5 girls to think about what leadership means to them, who they admire and why and ideas they may have for leading our College values and our focus on kindness across K-6.
Inspired by the recent Time Magazine’s collaboration with LEGO, She Built That which celebrates girls who are leading the way globally by driving change, solving problems and shaping the world we talked about the culture they would like to build as leaders next year.
LEGO’s extensive research into gender perceptions around building and STEM-focused learning and careers reveals some stark reminders as to why we need to continue to drive our strong focus on fostering a STEM mindset in all our girls. LEGO’s research states:
- 7 in 10 girls globally struggle to see themselves as someone who is good at building things
- Children are twice as likely to credit inventions to men than women. Most children think men invented Wi-Fi, fridges and the moon landing software although all were actually created by women.
Thankfully our Pymble girls are confident in their STEM exploration, making and construction skills and capacity to create and it’s important we continue to work together to build that mindset.

Respect and Courage in action: Year 1 speeches:
Last week, Mrs Bird and I had the privilege of listening to a few Year 1 students deliver their speeches to us on a range of topics. Juliette Benson spoke about kindness as her superpower, Xanthi Audley spoke about the power of respect and Evelyn……spoke about her dreams of becoming an archaeologist. Each girl spoke with clarity and confidence on their chosen topic and had us spellbound throughout their speeches. Congratulations to all of Year 1 who are leaning into their courage in preparing and delivering speeches.
Year 2 visit Wildflower Gardens, St Ives – Year 2 Compass Teacher, Emma Vumbaca
The Year 2 girls spent a wonderful day exploring the Wildflower Garden at St Ives, fully immersed in the sights, sounds and textures of the bush. They wandered along peaceful trails on bushwalks, discovering tiny creatures and hidden lookouts. With great care and curiosity, they tried dip net fishing and worked together to build habitats for local wildlife. One of the highlights was meeting and gently patting a range of animals—including a snake, turtle, stick insect, frog and a blue tongue lizard—which sparked both excitement and a few brave smiles. Some students used ash from tree bark to create natural face paint, while others cooled off with their feet in the stream. It was a day filled with hands-on learning, quiet moments of wonder and a real connection with nature.
