Mia Chan – Year 10

From the 18th to the 21st of August, I completed my work experience at Tata Consultancy Services, a company that specialises in IT consulting, software development, and helps clients to solve problems using current and emerging technologies. During my time there, there were a lot of workshops held that taught us skills that we could apply in the workplace, but also to apply in a final pitch. These workshops included presentation skills, how a project team works, AI, Women in STEM, VR, interview skills and how to approach a project and the methodologies to use.

The most helpful workshops were the presentation skills and the design thinking workshop, which taught us how to communicate our ideas clearly and creatively while approaching problems with innovative, user-focused solutions. We had to present our pitch to the Head of ServiceNow Woolworths Technology, with a solution for food waste and high energy usage that uses AI, IoT or data analytics to solve the problem. We had to collaborate in groups with girls from other schools, allowing us to network and bring different skills and perspectives to the table, which mimicked the dynamics of a real workplace, fostering teamwork, adaptability, and innovation. Additionally, the majority of the speakers were women, which empowered me as IT is a very male-dominated field. This experience gave me a deeper insight into how technology can address global issues, and I really enjoyed the experience.
