Science curriculum links through visit to Cochlear Australia
At Pymble, we are always looking for connections of learning with industry innovations. These connections help our students to see how skills and content are linked to future career pathways and post school study.
Towards the end of last term, Science teacher Elaine Lau visited the headquarters of Cochlear Australia to investigate curriculum links to student learning in Biology. This particularly interesting for students who are interested in studying biotechnology, biomedical engineering, audiology and software engineering.
Here are her reflections from the visit:
The day started with a presentation on the ear and hearing loss which aligned perfectly to our syllabus outcomes. Then about half an hour Q & A with the audiologist and engineer. After a small break, three other engineers from research and development showed us the technologies and devices in three groups. Finally, we went on the manufacturing tour.
It’s a very good visit – have talked to Robyn Rudd, our biology coordinator about the potential visit for our year 12 biology classes and careers opportunities especially as engineers. Lots of female engineers who gave presentations to us which were promising. The manufacturing tour was the highlight though I was not allowed to take any photos there.

Parents and carers, if you are working at an organisation willing to host our teachers for a visit to investigate curriculum links, please reach out to partnerships@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au.
