To be considered a bicycle it cannot be propelled exclusively by a motor. In Australia e-bikes must not assist pedalling past the speed of 25km\/h.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before buying an e-bike ask the retailer for evidence the e-bike is legal to be ridden on public roads and that it comes with the compliance sticker that ensures the bike is legal and that it meets Australian quality standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-color-2-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-6870f3d951637e3ff4a256f474548e27\">New education resource for young riders now available<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out the new free&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sutherlandshire.nsw.gov.au\/living-here\/roads,-traffic-and-parking\/bicycle-licence-scheme-pilot\">Student Digital Bicycle Licence Scheme<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-color-2-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-d1ddf8c3fe60e8e2ff0f0a08ddb73c70\">Liability and insurance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the event of an accident, ensure you or your child are covered for personal and public liability for injuries and property damage. Parents may be held responsible for their child\u2019s behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider looking into bicycle insurance to protect your family against potential liability issues.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bicyclensw.org.au\/insurance\/\">Bicycle NSW<\/a>&nbsp;provides insurance to its members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Remember, insurance is void for illegal devices, so ensure your e-bike complies with regulations.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-color-2-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-3a1bcca96982c38172a0a47c54e63bd3\">What are the rules for riding e-bikes?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find out more about e-bikes at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transport.nsw.gov.au\/operations\/active-transport\/e-bikes#:~:text=E%2Dbikes%20that%20comply%20with,the%20same%20road%20rules%20apply.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Transport for NSW<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-color-2-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-ab78242d163068e4c2367be23f76c410\">E-scooters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Personal e-scooters cannot legally be ridden on public roads and paths in NSW, only on private property.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NSW Government is working with some local councils to enable trails of shared e-scooters. Shared e-scooter trials are currently taking place in Kogarah, Forster-Tuncurry and Wollongong.&nbsp;Sutherland Shire Council is not currently taking part in the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trials are in response to the growing popularity of e-scooters and the need to safely manage their use. The trials are collecting information on demand for shared e-scooters, safety, and community sentiment. This will help inform the future of e-scooters in NSW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find out more about e-scooters at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transport.nsw.gov.au\/roadsafety\/road-users\/e-scooters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Transport for NSW<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sutherlandshire.nsw.gov.au\/__data\/assets\/image\/0014\/61214\/varieties\/800w.jpeg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-color-2-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-1a65420d5fbd0ee63f75c2c3c64c60f1\">Road rules for bicycles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only children under 16 years of age of age can ride on the footpath, and they can be accompanied by adults.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bicycle riders must keep to the left on footpaths and give way to pedestrians.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bicycles are not allowed in pedestrian malls such as Cronulla Mall (there is no riding of ANY recreational vehicles in Cronulla Mall &#8211; all riders need to dismount).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All bicycle riders must have a bell on their bike to warn others of their approach and wear a helmet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-color-2-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-78373871886507e8527db77384f195b9\">Road safety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Road safety is a shared responsibility. Council and police follow up where, and as appropriate with unsafe and illegal behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As individuals, we cannot change the behaviour of others. It is important whether riding, driving, or walking that we are all responsible for our own safety and the&nbsp;safety of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-color-2-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-ba099a8f4e00fa76761f46363d777fe9\">Courteous ways to use a shared path<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Have a pleasant and fun experience by looking out for each other and following a few simple steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be the best version of you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always keep to your left<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your wits about you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t be distracted by your phone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your animals on a short lead<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide space for others when passing them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look where you\u2019re going and keep an easy pace<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People riding bikes should\u00a0<strong>ride slowly and use their bell or voice<\/strong>\u00a0to give pedestrians plenty of warning that they are approaching<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold your child\u2019s hand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you need to stop, move off the path to the left<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be visible in the dark! Use lights, reflectors, and wear reflective clothing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-color-2-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-b6606b2fc2bbe71a6fd5f7873c2f2e60\">E-bike and e-scooter fire risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>E-bikes and e-scooters commonly contain lithium-ion batteries.
