On Tuesday 3rd March, the Year 12 Legal Studies students were spoken to by Sister Noelene Simmons SM with respect to Human Trafficking and Slavery and the role NGOs (Non-government organisations) play in addressing this issue – through their persistence, advocacy, and community action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sister Noelene is in charge of Communications and Advocacy at ACRATH (Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans). ACRATH\u2019s mission is to eliminate human trafficking and the harm it causes in Australia, as this isn\u2019t just an international issue; it affects Australia through various means such as migration pathways, labour exploitation, and online environments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sister Noelene’s talk relates to the students’ Contemporary Human Rights Issue which they are currently studying. Students learn about the enormity of the issue both globally and locally, the work that is being done in advocating on behalf of victims of human trafficking and measures being taken here and overseas to shut down human trafficking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sister Noelene’s talk left a lasting impression on the students as well as helping them with their preparation for their upcoming assessment task by encouraging them to think critically about where the law succeeds, where it falls short, and how NGOs such as AGRATH help bridge the gap.<\/span><\/p>\n
