This policy adopts Gagn\u00e9\u2019s definitions of giftedness and talent as identified in his Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent (2010, DMGT 2.0).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Note the distinction between the terms giftedness and talent:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gifted students are those whose potential is distinctly above average in one or more of the following domains of human ability: intellectual, creative, social and physical to a degree that places an individual at least among the top 10% of age peers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Talented students are those whose skills are distinctly above average in one or more areas of human performance to a degree that places an individual at least among the top 10% of age peers who are or have been active in that field or fields.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Adapted from Gagn\u00e9, 2003)<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Gagn\u00e9\u2019s key argument for grouping of gifted students\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are THREE important aspects of educating gifted students \u2013 these are practical things and changes we can make to enhance the gifted students at MSCW.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Enrichment of curriculum.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grouping with differentiation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Acceleration \u2013 is one form of enrichment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Full time grouping of gifted students is the only way to fulfil the needs of these students on a daily basis.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote\">\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSubstantial gains in learning can be made when gifted students are grouped and accelerated, but only if they have access to a developmentally appropriate curriculum.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Rogers, 2002).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Newman Classes 2026<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We have TWO Newman classes in Years 7-10. These are Class 1 and Class 4. In Year 7, Class 1 has stronger data than Class 4. In Years 8-10 students, the two Newman classes are shuffled to aid in socialisation and there is no longer the distinction between Class 1 and 4. However, differentiation is still expected by staff within the Newman class.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Identification Process: Ability Data<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ability Data includes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">HAST Selective Test\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Academic Assessment Services tests<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Psychometric testing (WISC IV etc)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We then consider: <\/span><b>Achievement Data<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CoGat\/ AGat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PAT Reading Comprehension and Maths identifying those students achieving significantly above their age peers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NAPLAN<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Formative and summative tasks; school reports<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Competition results including ICAS\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teacher and parent nominations<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From this process, two Newman classes are created.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The following are ways teachers differentiate in the classroom everyday:<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Extension<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Extension is the provision of opportunities at a greater level of challenge to the student. A combination of practices, including acceleration, flexible grouping and differentiation of the curriculum, allows gifted students access to meaningful learning opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Enrichment<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Enrichment is the provision of breadth in the curriculum at the same level of challenge to the student.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gifted students want to think outside the box and solve real world problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will often be encouraged in their learning to develop the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abstraction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Complexity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Variety of content<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Organisation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Study of people<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Methods of inquiry<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Assessment<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students in Newman do extension assessment summative tasks. These are more complex and require higher order thinking- these are not about doing more.
