11<\/b>th<\/b> hour\u202611th day\u202611<\/b>th<\/b> month\u2026Remembrance Day <\/b>\"\"<\/span><\/h5>\n

From the poem titled, “For The Fallen”, written by 20 year old Laurence Binyon to honour his fallen comrades, we find the ‘The Ode’.\u00a0 It was first published in The London Times in 1914 to mark the ceasefire on the Western Front as armistice came into effect.\u00a0 In The Ode of Remembrance, the last few lines of the poem have been recited every year on Remembrance Day and Anzac Day since 1921 to commemorate Australian service men and women who never returned home.<\/span><\/p>\n

It begins: \u2026.They fell with their faces to the foe\u2026.and we recite:<\/span><\/p>\n

“They grow not old, as we that are left grow old<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

At the going down of the sun and in the morning<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

We will remember them”\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Lest we forget.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Interestingly, the last three words came from Rudyard Kipling\u2019s commemorative poem \u201cThe Recessional\u201d, a poem he wrote to commemorate Queen Victoria\u2019s Diamond Jubilee. However the concept of \u201cbeing careful not to forget\u2019 may have been inspired a lot earlier by \u201cLest Thou forget\u201d in the Bible\u2019s Book of Deuteronomy (4:7-9).<\/span><\/p>\n
