Truancy is when an individual does not want to attend school. School refusal occurs when a young person is experiencing emotional distress at such a significant level that they are unable to attend school, and their parents are aware that their daughter is not attending school as they have witnessed the emotional distress, usually at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is getting to the why they do not want to attend school that is important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reasons vary from individual to individual. Some common reasons are listed below:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">experiencing social anxiety<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">having been subject to bullying<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">finding it difficult to concentrate<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not feeling supported by teachers and staff<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">feeling excluded or \u2018othered\u2019 amongst peers<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">finding it challenging to keep up with the schoolwork<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">finding it challenging to build a social network and friendship circle<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">finding themselves disinterested or bored with the school material and subjects<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b><i>What can a parent do about School Refusal?<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Inform the College.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Contact the Tutor Teacher or House Coordinator of your daughter. The Wellbeing Team at the College has a range of skills working in collaboration with parents, students and external agencies to guide students to improving their attendance. When we work together for the benefit of your daughter\u2019s learning and wellbeing through developing a positive relationship we achieve more.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Engage your daughter in conversations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with a focus on listening to her and what she is and is not saying for the purpose of discovering the cause of the refusal to then arrange a suitable support plan that can be co-created with you, your daughter and the College as well as any external providers you have secured to help support your daughter during this time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If she is not seeing a therapist, <\/span><b>seek a therapist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, one who specifically works with young people &#8211; Adolescent Psychologist, Educational psychologist, This site assists individuals looking for support that is located close to home with the training and experience required to address specific areas: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psychology.org.au\/find-a-psychologist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Find a Psychologist | APS<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Engage with your GP<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and keep them up to date with what is currently happening &#8211; They may discuss medication as an additional treatment pathway, however, medication alone may not be the only solution.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once the cause has been identified &#8211; a graded exposure plan can be arranged in collaboration with us to help support your daughter in returning to school that is based on the causes leading towards the refusal. This may look like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">returning on certain days at certain times\/for certain subjects until they gradually build back up to a full-time schedule.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the College coordinating, preparing and facilitating a restorative conversation between students to clarify understanding.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">connecting with Inclusive Learning to assist in closing any gaps that may have occurred in her learning due to school refusal.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b><i>Additional Information<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><a DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Students Acceptable Use of Technology Agreement addresses the particular use of mobile technologies that has come to be referred to as \u2018Cyberbullying\u2019 (see 4.3 below).<\/span><\/i><b><i> The school will investigate and take action where this kind of bullying occurs in school and outside of school when it causes significant harm to the relationships between students and or teachers, is criminal in nature or has the capacity to impact on relationships across the wider school community.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>4.3. <\/b><b><i>When using ICT to communicate or publish digital content students will\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><i>never<\/i><\/b><b><i> include:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a) Unacceptable or unlawful material or remarks, including offensive, abusive or <\/span><\/i><i style=\"font-size: 1rem\">discriminatory comments\u00a0 <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i style=\"font-size: 1rem\">b)<\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Threatening, bullying or harassing material or make unreasonable demands<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">c) Sexually explicit or sexually suggestive material or correspondence, as per division 15A of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">d) False or defamatory information about a person or organisation<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">e) The school name, crest or any other identifying material without the written permission of the Principal.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1pkPXy_13HdkYOaJAmnYF42ELAOS74p89_ZV-bd4tfu8\/edit?usp=sharing\"><b>STUDENT MOBILE DEVICE USE POLICY<\/b><\/a><b><i>: MSCW DOCUMENT<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p><b>3.1<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is the College\u2019s <\/span><b>position<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that there will be no use of mobile devices from the time a student enters the College gates until the final bell at 3:15 pm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3.3<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Messaging or texting on a mobile device and\/or laptop during the course of a school day is considered inappropriate use and <\/span><b>will result in devices being confiscated for the day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as per the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1t2rYEWB7bArknCLk985OegUU3-tSNjS41_H57X_-Ocw\/edit#\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Classification of Unacceptable Student Behaviours.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In some circumstances, there may be a need for a parent to collect the mobile device from the College.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4.1 <\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mobile devices <\/span><b>must be<\/b> <b>turned off and remain out of sight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> during the school day.
