Term 3 has begun with much excitement and energy as our new Student Leaders introduced their theme “Ignite your light, Together we shine”.

As you would be aware, the Paris Olympics is in full swing and providing the perfect inspiration for our MSCW girls to shine in the Student Leadership Team activities. These Paris games, and the multiple achievements we have witnessed, demonstrate that goal setting, hard work and determination can reap benefits as well as personal and team satisfaction. Our  students can not only adopt a similar approach towards their academic pursuits, but as well in their inter-House competitions, thereby gaining valuable House points.. One of the first activities of the Student Leadership Team is their coordination of the “MSCW Olympics”. They share their progress later in this Newsletter.

The recent Athletics Carnival at the former Olympic Stadium was a huge success. It was a delight to see students participating and achieving personal bests. Congratulations to the Sports Coordinator, Mr Dan Watts, and PDHPE staff for the running of events on the day. Final results to come.

This Term we welcome Cara Barilla to the Inclusive Learning Team and Lynda Challenger to the Science faculty as Lab Assistant.

Humpty Dumpty Foundation

At our first Assembly this term, the Humpty Dumpty Foundation attended to acknowledge the girls participation and present the College with the Humpty Cup. This Cup recognises the Sydney school who raised the highest amount of money to support the Humpty Dumpty Foundation to “help sick kids in hospital”.

Typical of our girls community giving spirit, MSCW raised $6467.00 this year through their energetic involvement in the Balmoral Burn, one of Sydney’s outstanding community events. This outcome doubled the efforts of 2023. The money raised has been used to purchase a Connex Vital Signs Monitor with stand for the Hornsby Ku-ring-Gai Maternity Hospital (see image below).  This vital equipment allows health care teams to accurately assess a range of vital signs like temperature, blood pressure and oxygen saturation levels within paediatric care settings. The monitor recognises deteriorating clinical conditions immediately, and this allows for early intervention to avoid risks and adverse outcomes for the patient. It is a very important piece of equipment to have in the ward.

Thank you to every girl who ran on the day and to those who sponsored them. These types of contributions are a very active way that we can be of service and give back to the wider community.

Upgrade of facilities

On your next visit to the College you will see that our College front doors and Hall door have been upgraded, as well as gardens replenished. Staff bathrooms have also been refurbished.

Year 12 Trials

Please keep Year 12 in your thoughts and prayers as they began their HSC Trials on Monday. These exams are significant for Year 12 in their HSC preparations and will give them a good guide regarding their performance so far. Once these are marked by staff, there will be significant conversations regarding further strategies for improvement and skill building.

Looking forward to the term ahead.

InnovateNow

The InnovateNOW program, led by Columbia Business School’s Professor Daniel McQuade from July 8-12 allowed secondary students across Sydney Catholic Schools to showcase their entrepreneurial skills. Harriet O’Connor and Seana Miao represented the College in this unique experience. Both students were a part of a group of female students who collaborated on and executed their business project Sustainable Honey Farming Social Enterprise – An initiative promoting sustainable beekeeping practices to support local communities and protect the environment.

At the end of their week of workshops each project group pitched their idea to a panel of experts which included Daniel McQuade. Congratulations to both Harriet and Seana who were a part of the overall winning group.

During the holidays, we had the wonderful opportunity to partake in InnovateNOW, a 5 day entrepreneurial bootcamp taught by Columbia Business School Faculty Daniel McQuade. The key points that we took away from this experience:

  • Integrating with like-minded individuals on group projects- these are crucial life-long skills that we will carry with us into team environments.
  • Getting a business idea from a maybe to a yes takes time, but is achievable with hard work and a growth mindset.
  • Although it is daunting, confidence, cohesion, and courage are KEY when pitching a business idea.

Overall, this bootcamp taught us many life skills that we will carry with us throughout our future endeavours. We are very grateful for this opportunity and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone thinking of participating in the future.

In our Church ……

Saints Joachim and Anne

On the 26th July, The Church celebrated the life of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, Jesus’ grandparents- Mary’s parents. In the Scriptures, Matthew and Luke furnish a legal family history of Jesus, tracing ancestry to show that Jesus is the culmination of great promises. Not only is his mother’s family neglected, we also know nothing factual about them except that they existed. Even the names “Joachim” and “Anne” come from a legendary source written more than a century after Jesus died.

The strong character of Mary in making decisions, her continuous practice of prayer, her devotion to the laws of her faith, her steadiness at moments of crisis, and her devotion to her relatives—all indicate a close-knit, loving family that looked forward to the next generation even while retaining the best of the past.

We believe that Jesus is truly God and truly human, and this feast of his grandparents is a testimony to that faith. While the names Joachim and Anne may be legendary, we know that Jesus had grandparents in the parents of Mary (as well as those of Saint Joseph). Our God truly became human and lived among us. (taken from https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-of-the-day/saints-joachim-and-anne)

A Prayer to Saint Anne and Saint Joachim

Saint Anne and Saint Joachim,
you were ever faithful to God, trusting in Him in your lives and while you prayed for a child.
Your patience and perseverance in prayer are an example to us.
We ask that you pray for us, that we may be ever faithful and trusting in God.
May our love for God and our faith in Him never waiver, no matter what happens in our lives.
May we appreciate the faith of others like Saint Anne and Saint Joachim and
be inspired to a
deeper faith.
Saints Anne and Joachim, thank you for your example of faith.
Thank you for your wonderful daughter, our spiritual mother Mary.
Thank you for the love of God and the faith you inspire in us.
Grandparents of Jesus,
All respond: pray for us
Parents to Mary,
All respond: pray for us

World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, 28th July

Pope Francis decided in 2021 to institute a Church-wide celebration of a World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. He was moved to establish it not just because of the importance of grandparents and the elderly, a theme on which he has often spoken, but particularly because of the neglect and isolation so many grandparents and seniors experienced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel restrictions, nursing-home policies and fear for their safety prevented their being visited and embraced by their loved ones.

Pope Francis hopes that, on this day, grandchildren will visit their grandparents, perhaps even sharing with them a copy of his letter, and that parish families will have special Masses thanking God for the gift of grandparents, praying for them, and entrusting to him those who have died, particularly during the pandemic.

The choice of the fourth Sunday of July is transparently to connect it, as closely as possible, to the July 26 feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus. This link to Jesus’ family tree and to salvation history suggests that everyone’s genealogy and personal prehistory is part of the providential plan of God.

Pope Francis, in his message used the quote “I am with you always” (Mt 28:20) summoning grandparents to recognize and be renewed in their sacred calling to be guardians of the connection between their family’s history and salvation history and to pass on to younger generations a clear awareness of their place in the bigger picture. (from https://www.ncregister.com/blog/world-day-of-grandparents-and-elderly-fourth-sunday-of-july) MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS  FOR THE FIRST WORLD DAY FOR GRANDPARENTS AND THE ELDERLY

In our Community ……

CAMBODIA IMMERSION

A huge thank you to Ms Samantha Ison and Mr Andy D’Archy for experiencing this wonderful immersion with the students.  I would like to thank Catholic Mission for organising and leading the immersion.  Also a big thank you to the families that put their trust in the College and Catholic Mission to allow their daughters to experience this amazing opportunity. And lastly, to the students:  Edie Riley, Catherine Davis, Amelie Gomez-Nielwolik, Kayla Staniforth, Bianca Magner, Sophie Scoullar, Georgia Sherry, Audrey Williams, Lucy Mutimer, Elka Byczkov, Samara Naidu and Ellie Pondekas for having the courage to step outside their comfort zone and immerse themselves in the Cambodian culture.

YEAR 9 REFLECTION DAY

On Friday, the Year 9 students experienced their wonderful Reflection Day at Holy Name of Mary, Hunters Hill. The theme of the day was Courage with a focus on the question: What are you discussing on your journey?

This day, inspired by the scripture passage ‘The Walk to Emmaus’ Lk 24: 13-35 invited students to reflect on their own journey throughout their time at Marist Sisters’ College.

The Year 9 students were asked to focus on the following: “we need many things when we embark on a journey, some are practical, some are physical, some are emotional, spiritual.  Sometimes our needs change, mid journey…we need to be adaptable, careful, be active listeners.

“Year 9 had a wonderful day full of activities during Reflection Day at Holy Name of Mary, Hunters Hill. Through the days’ theme on “Courage” a dimension of our College Compass, we were able to reflect on our obstacles courageously which allowed us to share, connect and build relationships with our peers and teachers.” – Year 9 Student

I would like to thank all the staff who attended the day and ran small groups: Ms Samantha Ison, Ms Jenny Vu, Ms Adrianna Tesoriero, Mr Liam Story, Ms Laura Marshall, Ms Nicola Savvidis, Mr Joshua Allen, Ms Chanel Basha, Ms Rosario Poli, Ms Tanya Guinness and Ms Aleksandra Bridge. A huge thank you for being such a wonderful team and for all your support throughout the day.

In our Curriculum ……

This coming Monday, our Year 12 students will commence two weeks of Trial HSC Examinations. As a Marist Sisters’ College Community, we will keep them in our prayers for what can be a stressful and anxious time:

Dear Lord,

We ask for your blessing on our students undertaking their Trial HSC Examinations over the coming weeks. Grant them the confidence they deserve from their years of diligent study. Grant them the ability to comprehend questions and effectively plan and articulate their responses. May they be enriched by the gifts of the Holy Spirit – Wisdom, Understanding, Fortitude and Knowledge. May their faith and piety give them the strength to face these examinations and the satisfaction of achieving their personal best.

We ask these things through Christ Our Lord,

Amen.

We wish our Year 12 students all the best!

Gifted and Talented Report

I hope everyone has settled back into their learning and is excited to be back for Term 3.

I also hope parents and students were able to reflect on their semester 1 results and meet their teachers for parent teacher interviews. These are invaluable. It is your opportunity as parents to meet the people who are nurturing and supporting your daughter everyday. It is also an opportunity to celebrate achievement and growth and reflect on how to move forward when the results have not been as expected.

The Newman Program at MSCW is thriving. Your daughter should be coming home everyday excited about her learning and feeling challenged. In the day to day of school life, the program offers our gifted and talented students academic rigour, creative and critical thinking experiences and enrichment opportunities.

I refer to the principles from SCS regarding the Newman Program and its aims:

3.1 Giftedness is present in every culture, socio- economic context and a variety of domains.

3.2 All students have the right to receive an education that is responsive to their needs.

3.3 Effective school environments based upon quality teaching, learning and leadership are essential for helping all students achieve their potential.

Learning goes hand in hand with their social and emotional wellbeing. Where your daughter is struggling, it is important you reach out. I am also open to hearing about the learning your daughter is experiencing in class.

Tomorrow, I will join some of the philosophy students and Newman students for the Thriving Minds Conference. This is a day of critical thinking, where students will listen to lectures from Oxford University professors and discuss big philosophical ideas from Descartes and the intricate debate between science and miracles.

College Co-Captains Report

Dear MSCW Community,

As the College Co-Captains we are so excited to be working with the Woolwich community to foster an environment of inclusion and belonging both within and beyond the gates.

The Student Leadership Team theme; ‘Ignite Your Light, Together We Shine’ reflects our goals for the College over the next twelve months. We aim to ignite the light of each individual so that we may shine as a collective.

As leaders we will strive to unlock the potential within each student and enhance their unique gifts and talents. We will inspire students to have courage to embrace their skills across all areas, by providing the community with a wide range of opportunities and initiatives, one of which we will introduce.

In honour of the current athletes representing Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics, the Student Leadership Team are hosting the Marist Mini Olympics at the College over the upcoming weeks. We are conducting a wide array of inclusive activities and events in line with the diverse talents within the community, including an inter-house Olympic themed art competition, seated volleyball and sprints up our steep driveway.

Houses will compete against one another to earn points which contribute to the House Cup awarded at the end of the year. We encourage MSCW students to participate in the events offered, not only as a tribute to the 2024 Olympics, but to recognise the incredible abilities in our community. We will have lots of fun along the way!

Please see the schedule of events that will be made available on the school’s Instagram, Facebook pages and on the COMPASS notification page over the next week. We can’t wait to see who will stand as the winning house…Let the games begin!

We hope you have had a lovely start to Term 3 and we look forward to the upcoming year.

Have a great weekend,

Hannah and Aisling

UAC Application deadlines

UAC Early Bird application deadline: Monday 30th September 11.59pm

SRS Application deadline: Monday 16 September 11.59pm

First offers released: 8 November (November Round 1)

Conditional offers converted to unconditional offers: from 23 December (December Round 2)

Navigating offers and preferences

In November Round 1, students can receive one unconditional offer and multiple conditional offers. To convert a conditional offer to an unconditional one, students must keep the course in their UAC preference list and meet the institution’s specified criteria

Students should always prioritise their dream course. In December Round 2, they won’t be penalised for ranking their dream course above a course for which they’ve received a conditional offer, even if an institution instructs them to list the conditional course as their ‘highest eligible preference’.

If they miss out on their dream course, their next choice will be considered, and so on. Their conditional offer will be considered after the courses listed above it have been considered. If the conditional course is listed as their top choice, and they’ve met the conditions, they will receive the offer and not be considered for courses listed below it.

Canteen News

Change to Flexischools

Due to the increase of online orders, the cut off time will now be 8:00 am!

Please order as soon as you are able to.

Flexischools is the system for students to order lunch online and to purchase over the counter in the Canteen. If you are new to this system we would encourage you to set up a Flexischools account. (Link: flexischools.com.au). The Canteen is a very busy area at lunchtime, so ordering online is the best option to ensure your daughter’s order is ready at the start of lunch and avoids any delays in purchasing over the counter.

Please note Friday is always a busy with online orders, please order early on Fridays to hopefully minimise issues you may experience. If you do have a problem please contact the Flexischool parent helpline Monday – Friday 7.00 am – Midday on 1300 361 769.

Students please see canteen staff for any assistance.

Calling on volunteers

The MSCW Canteen would love to welcome new and existing parents to help out. Any day and time you can spare or offer would be greatly appreciated by all, especially at recess and lunchtime with the pickup of lunches and service. If you are able to assist, please contact the Canteen via SMS on 0457 593 920.
