International Women’s Day, celebrated on 8 March, invites us to pause and recognise the extraordinary legacy of women who have shaped our world. We also look ahead with confidence to the young women who will shape the future. At MSCW our mission is to nurture academic rigour, personal growth, and the formation of young women who know their worth, understand their potential, and feel empowered to pursue it boldly.

This year our senior student leaders embraced that mission with enthusiasm and creativity, transforming International Women’s Day into International Women’s Week at MSCW! Their leadership, passion and commitment were evident in every activity and initiative they coordinated for our community.

Monday saw the launch of International Women’s Week, with a video shared to every Homeroom to introduce this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Balancing the Scales” and what it means to our Marist community. Tuesday featured an interactive visual installation titled “Balancing the Scales.” A set of balancing scales was created to symbolise the challenges women continue to face. One side of the scales was weighted with representations of the inequities women still face in parts of the world. Students were invited to place coins on the opposite side of the scales to symbolically balance the scales and inequities. The installation served as a powerful visual reminder that collective effort and small actions can contribute to meaningful change. All funds raised will be donated to Project Compassion.

A “Sister Swap” took place on Wednesday morning in collaboration with Cerdon College – an initiative focused on connection and empowerment between our two Marist Sister School communities. Homerooms from both Colleges were paired as pen pals, exchanging letters of encouragement, shared experiences, and reflections on confidence, leadership, and opportunities as young women. This initiative fostered empathy, perspective, and solidarity, while reminding students that uplifting one another is a meaningful way to help balance the scales.

Thursday morning began with a before school Mass in the College Chapel lead by Fr Steve Drum. The mass was dedicated to celebrating women and recognising their contributions to our community and the wider world. Readings and Prayers of the Faithful honoured women and acknowledged those experiencing inequality. We especially prayed for women facing health challenges, hardship, or injustice.

The week concluded with ‘Sisters in Song’, a women’s empowerment concert featuring performances by students and teachers. This was a wonderful showcase celebrating strength, resilience, and unity through music that was enjoyed by all. Together, the week’s events created a strong sense of community, celebration and empowerment, while reinforcing the message of ‘balancing the scales.’

May we continue to nurture a community where every student is encouraged to dream boldly, learn deeply, and grow into the fullness of her God‑given potential.

Raising the Bar: CSDA Public Speaking Round 1

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of attending Round 1 of the CSDA Public Speaking competition at Marist College Eastwood. It was a remarkable evening, showcasing the incredible talent, wit, and confidence of our student speakers: SarahJane Foley (Yr 7), Ahana Minocha (Yr 8), Phoebe O’Connor (Yr 9), Amber Cotter (Yr 10), Angelina Severino (Yr 11) and Sophie Murphy (Yr 11).

The level of competition was high, but our students rose to the challenge with exceptional poise. To all our participants: thank you for representing the College with such distinction. You’ve made us incredibly proud.

I am thrilled to announce that Sophie and Ahana have both been selected to move on to the Zone Finals this week!

Congratulations to Sophie and Ahana on this well-deserved achievement. Your ability to engage an audience and articulate complex ideas is truly impressive.

Traffic Flow and Parking on Woolwich Road

To ensure the safety of our students and maintain positive relationships with our neighbours, please keep the following in mind:

  • Neighbourly Parking: Students and parents must ensure they do not block residents’ driveways when parking in surrounding streets.

  • School Zones & Speed: Please strictly adhere to speed restrictions on Woolwich Road. These regulations are essential for the protection of our entire school community.

  • U-Turn Restriction: For the safety of all pedestrians and motorists, U-turns are strictly prohibited directly outside the College. Please proceed to a safe intersection to turn around.
  • Pedestrian Safety: Students must use the designated traffic light crossing at all times when crossing Woolwich Road.

  • Drop-off/Pick-up Zones: Please do not park or leave your vehicle unattended in these marked zones during peak times.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our roads safe and our neighbours respected.

Reflection: Seeking Light in the Desert

As we journey deeper into the season of Lent, we often speak of it as a desert experience—a time of stripping away the noise to confront the harder truths of our existence. This year, that desert feels particularly vast and the air particularly heavy.

It is difficult to speak of hope while missiles fall and the global economy shutters under the threat of wider conflict. Yet, the Lenten journey does not end in the desert; it moves toward the promise of renewal and resurrection. It reminds us that even in the darkest hours, the work of the peacemaker is more essential than ever.

Eucharist Congress 2028 Launch

In 2028, Australia will host the 54th International Eucharistic Congress, an extraordinary global encounter with Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Pilgrims from around the world will come together in worship, reflection, and celebration, united by a shared faith and a mission to carry Christ into the world. We will be welcoming Pope Leo to Sydney during this period.

Eucharistic Congress Launch Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, we thank you for the gift of your real presence in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Grant us the grace to receive you reverently, worship you truly and serve you with hearts renewed. By the power of the Holy Spirit strengthen us, so that as you gave yourself to the Father and to us, we too may offer our lives to God and to others. Inspire and help us to serve you in those who are in need, especially the defenceless and homeless, the lonely and lost. Unite us with your sacrifice of the Mass, so that we may truly become what we have received, the Body of Christ. Amen.

Year 7 Reflection Day

The Year 7 students had a wonderful day at their Year 7 Reflection Day in Week 3. A Reflection Day is significantly different from an incursion or excursion.  At Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich, Reflection Days are an integral part of our communities focus on faith formation. They are an integral part of the Religious Education program and allow students throughout their time at Marist Sisters to build on, extend and deepen the reflection on their emerging self in relationship to their family, their peers and God.

The purpose of the Reflection Day program is to assist students to recognise the importance of their holistic development, to give them further understanding of fullness of life.  Activities are designed to open students to their spirit dimension as well as fostering a sense of community and a heightened awareness of their own faith and that of others.

The Year 7 students participated in a range of activities that focused on the theme of community. The students were asked the question: what do you see? This is from the scripture passage John 1: 35-42.  Throughout the reflection day, we unpacked what community means to our Year 7 students, with a focus on our Marist Sisters’ Community.

From the Leader of Learning and Curriculum

From the Leader of Learning and Curriculum

As we reach the halfway point of Term 1, students are beginning to encounter a growing number of assessment tasks. This is an important moment for establishing strong routines, planning ahead, and approaching learning with calm, consistent effort rather than lastminute pressure. The following updates outline key supports and upcoming events designed to help students stay organised and engaged in their learning as well as some key upcoming events.

Preparing for Assessment Tasks

Assessment periods can feel more manageable when students plan early and break tasks into smaller steps. Using the College Planner each day to record homework, assessment dates, and study blocks helps students avoid latenight work and ensures they approach tasks with clarity and confidence. Families can support this by encouraging students to review their planner regularly and spread their study across the week.

Study Skills and Support Programs

Students across the College are engaging with a range of programs designed to strengthen their study habits. Year 11 have begun sessions with Dr Prue Salter this week, with Years 12 and 7 to follow shortly. Years 7–10 have recently completed Elevate Education workshops focused on motivation, time management, and effective study strategies. All students also have access to the Enhanced Learning Educational Services (ELES) online study skills platform through the College Student Site, providing ongoing support throughout the year.

NAPLAN Online 2026

Students in Years 7 and 9 will complete NAPLAN Online from Wednesday 11 March to Wednesday 18 March. Students must have the NAPLAN Lockdown Browser installed on their device and bring plugin wired headphones for all tests. A full schedule and further details have been provided to families via Compass Communications.

Year 12 Study During Retreat Week

During Week 7, Year 12 students will attend their Senior Retreat. On the days they are not at Retreat, students will complete a series of selfpaced online workshops through Canvas, focusing on study skills and subjectspecific learning. All students will also attend an inperson English feedback workshop, offered twice during the week to accommodate Retreat schedules. Jarnosse will be open for private study, with students signing in and out through the General Administration Office. This structure is designed to support Year 12 as they continue to build momentum in their HSC year.

Looking Ahead

It has been encouraging to see students engaging so positively with their learning across the first half of the term. Their willingness to participate, plan ahead, and make use of the support available sets a strong foundation for the success ahead. With consistent routines and a commitment to doing their best, our students are well placed for a purposeful and productive year.

Year 12 – Legal Studies Incursion

On Tuesday 3rd March, the Year 12 Legal Studies students were spoken to by Sister Noelene Simmons SM with respect to Human Trafficking and Slavery and the role NGOs (Non-government organisations) play in addressing this issue – through their persistence, advocacy, and community action.

Sister Noelene is in charge of Communications and Advocacy at ACRATH (Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans). ACRATH’s mission is to eliminate human trafficking and the harm it causes in Australia, as this isn’t just an international issue; it affects Australia through various means such as migration pathways, labour exploitation, and online environments.

Sister Noelene’s talk relates to the students’ Contemporary Human Rights Issue which they are currently studying. Students learn about the enormity of the issue both globally and locally, the work that is being done in advocating on behalf of victims of human trafficking and measures being taken here and overseas to shut down human trafficking.

Sister Noelene’s talk left a lasting impression on the students as well as helping them with their preparation for their upcoming assessment task by encouraging them to think critically about where the law succeeds, where it falls short, and how NGOs such as AGRATH help bridge the gap.

We will be teaching proven memorization techniques, including:

Chunking: Breaking long strings of numbers into digestible “bites.”

Loci Method: Associating numbers with physical locations.

Rhythm & Patterning: Turning digits into a melodic sequence.

Whether you want to learn ten digits or a hundred, these workshops are a fantastic way to sharpen your brain and gain some serious bragging rights for your next family dinner.

When: During Maths Club on 18th March

Location: Jarnosse

Time: Lunchtime

Canteen News

Parents and Carers

Please remind your daughters to collect their lunch orders from the Canteen.

If your daughter is going off to early sport on a Thursday, the student should collect their lunch order from the Canteen before they depart for their sporting venue.

Change to Flexischools

Due to the increase of online orders, the cut off time will now be 8:00 am!

Please order as soon as you are able to.

Flexischools is the system for students to order lunch online and to purchase over the counter in the Canteen. If you are new to this system we would encourage you to set up a Flexischools account. (Link: flexischools.com.au). The Canteen is a very busy area at lunchtime, so ordering online is the best option to ensure your daughter’s order is ready at the start of lunch and avoids any delays in purchasing over the counter.

All ID Compass Cards are to be used in the Canteen for picking up lunches and for Flexi Schools over the counter sales.

Please note Friday is always busy with online orders, please order early on Fridays to hopefully minimise issues you may experience. If you do have a problem please contact the Flexischool parent helpline Monday – Friday 7.00 am – Midday on 1300 361 769.

Students please see canteen staff for any assistance.

Calling on volunteers

The MSCW Canteen would love to welcome new and existing parents to help out. Any day and time you can spare or offer would be greatly appreciated by all, especially at recess and lunchtime with the pickup of lunches and service. If you are able to assist, please contact the Canteen via SMS on 0457 593 920.
