Happy Feast Day!

On Wednesday, in a beautiful first-time Mass at St Mary’s North Sydney, we celebrated the Feast Day of Jeanne–Marie Chavoin, Foundress of the Marist Sisters. This was followed by some tasty Tutor picnics and fun House games including trivia competitions. The enthusiastic community spirit evident channelled the desire of Jeanne-Marie for a Marist school to be ‘United in One Spirit’. Our stunning new “JMC” sculpture provided a real focus point for the day, again emphasising Jeanne-Marie’s formidable courage, humility, strength and great trust in God.

We welcomed our Marist sisters to our Feast Day Mass and presented each sister with flowers to wish them a Happy Feast Day as well as thank them for their continued support of our College community: Sr Gail Reneker – Unit Leader, Sr Noelene Simmons, Sr Mary Farrelly, Sr Vivienne Goldstein, Sr Gemma Pearson and Sr Maureen Crick .

Thanks to Fr Richard Leonard SJ, Parish Priest at St Mary’s North Sydney, who invited our community to celebrate at St Mary’s North Sydney. Thanks also to Fr Brian Wilson – Holy Name of Mary Parish Hunters Hill who concelebrated with Fr Richard.

Congratulations to our new Student Leaders

As part of the Foundress Day Mass on Wednesday, we blessed and presented badges to our new student Leadership Team in our traditional Investiture Ceremony. Our student leaders have spent two valuable days in camp preparing their approach to their roles next term. I look forward to working with and supporting their initiatives.

Semester 1 Awards

Congratulations to all students who received Merit Awards and Academic Progress Awards on Monday. These awards recognise both achievement and success throughout Semester 1. This was a very happy occasion punctuated by a selection of outstanding musical performances. For many, it represents the achievement of some of their 2024 goals.

Cambodia Immersion

During the school holidays, Ms Samantha Ison and Mr Andy D’Archy, will take a group of 12 students to Cambodia. We wish them a very safe and satisfying journey. These types of immersions are very broadening for our students and allow them to reflect on and live out our College values in the service of others. Many thanks to these staff who have given up their holiday time to support our students in this way.

Happy Holidays

I wish all families a very restful holiday. Make sure you take time to read at least one book!

Innovate NOW

Congratulations to Harriet O’Connor (Year 10) and Seana Miao (Year 10) who have been selected by the College to engage in the Entrepreneurial Bootcamp being held in the upcoming school holidays 8-12 July. Students were invited to submit a business proposal to attend the bootcamp being run by Daniel McQuade (Columbia Business Faculty). This achievement allows both Harriet and Seana to delve further into their business ideas. We look forward to hearing about their experiences when we return in Term 3.

In our Church ……

THE FEAST OF JEANNE-MARIE CHAVOIN

June 30 marked the 166th anniversary of the death of Jeanne-Marie Chavoin, revered foundress of the Marist Sisters.

Born in the village of Coutouvre in central France in 1786 the young Jeanne-Marie followed the call of the Colin brothers at Cerdon to establish the first community of Marist Sisters. Mother St Joseph, as she was known, died in 1858 at Jarnosse, not far from her birthplace.

Jeanne-Marie Chavoin, Foundress of the Marist Sisters, was a woman who lived simply and, like Mary, was attentive to the needs of others. As we recall the anniversary of her death we pray that like her we might always “try to live in a great spirit of faith which will lead us to see God in everything” (CMJ 90.3).

She is remembered as a courageous, large-hearted and generous woman. Her deep faith in God and love of Mary enabled her to be always ready to render service to those in need.

God of creation,
we praise and thank you for the birth of Jeanne-Marie Chavoin,
our foundress, Mother St Joseph.

We thank you for her parents, Théodore and Jeanne, for their love, their courage, their acceptance of responsibility and all they taught Jeanne-Marie.
We thank you for our own parents, the families which prepared us for life.

May Jeanne-Marie Chavoin intercede for us today,
that we may present a Marian face in our world –
a face of compassion, understanding and love,
a face which accepts people as they are,
yet encourages them to grow in goodness.

With them, may we be brought forth to the life of grace.
We pray this in the name of Jesus your Son.

In our Curriculum ……

CAMBODIA IMMERSION – BON VOYAGE

Catholic Mission is the international mission agency of the Catholic Church in Australia. Compelled by the message, life and love of Jesus Christ, Catholic Mission forms Australians for mission and raises funds for mission—in Australia and around the world.

Catholic Mission operates in over 160 countries to support initiatives in 1,100 dioceses, including remote Australia. Grassroots needs are identified by local Catholics, to give people the opportunity for a full, enriched life— physically and spiritually—regardless of race, stigma, religion or gender.

Mission in action happens right now and for generations, to help people immediately, longer term and eternally. We engage in mission when we proclaim our faith through our words, actions and lives.

Marist Sisters’ College are very fortunate to be sending twelve students and two teachers to Cambodia to experience an immersion in the school holidays.

We wish Ms Samantha Ison, Mr Andy d’Archy, Edie Riley, Catherine Davis, Amelie Gomez-Nielwolik, Kayla Staniforth, Bianca Magner, Sophie Scoullar, Georgia Sherry, Audrey Williams, Lucy Mutimer, Elka Byczkov, Samara Naidu and Ellie Pondekas a safe trip to Cambodia. A big thank you to Catholic Mission for organising and leading this wonderful immersion. May God protect you on the way and bring you back safe and sound; and may his angel accompany you for safety.

YEAR 11 STUDIES OF RELIGION I – SHABBAT WORKSHOP

Currently, our Year 11 Studies of Religion I students are studying Judaism as a Religious Tradition. In this topic, the particular focus is on the ways in which Judaism, as an integrated belief system, provides a distinctive answer to the enduring questions of human existence for its adherents.

On Monday, 1st July, Year 11 Studies of Religion I immersed themselves in a Shabbat workshop with Ms. Lili Negrine, who shared her personal testimony on the Jewish practice of Shabbat. The workshop provided students with an opportunity to experience the rich traditions that define this weekly observance. During this session, students explored the significance of the rituals and objects used by herself and her family, and heard a recitation of the Hamotzi and Kiddush prayers.

Ms. Negrine also generously brought in traditional challah bread from her local bakery and a variety of delicious dips traditionally eaten during Shabbat for the students to enjoy. This allowed students to further deepen their understanding of the cultural and spiritual significance of Shabbat in a tangible way.

Thank you to Ms. Lili Negrine for providing our students with this enriching experience and a huge thank you to Ms Samantha Ison for organising the workshop.

YEAR 7, 8 & 9 EVANGELISATION DAY

Evangelisation Day at Trinity Catholic College Auburn was an awakening and reviving experience for me. With the range of activities such as fun challenges, icebreakers and a reflective mass enabled many to move out of their comfort zone and connect with other schools from the Sydney Archdiocese.

This year’s theme “We Journey Together as Joyful Witnesses to Hope” addressed the importance of Hope and Joy. I had learnt that as Catholics, we are all missionaries of joy, meaning our focal mission in life is to radiate joy to others . The talk by guest speaker, Caroline Khouri, reinforced the meaning of hope. Instead of seeking something for yourself, a new meaning was redeveloped: wishing good and wanting the best for others. This notion is continued as it showed how faith brings people together to see a new perspective of life.

Evangelisation day is an exceptional way to reconnect with God and form a refreshed perspective of my faith. Thank you to Ms Vu for organising the day and to Ms Ison for joining us as well!

– Sienna Vitale, Year 9

Academic Progress Awards Assembly for Stage 4 & 5

Congratulations to all award recipients presented with Academic Progress or Academic Merit Awards on Monday this week. I also want to express my sincere gratitude for the performances of our vocal ensemble, Coro Dolce and our Year 9 Elective Music ensemble. It was wonderful to see our Performing Arts shine.

I have included an extract from my address to the assembly:

Today, we celebrate the remarkable achievements of our Years 7 to 10 students. Many have demonstrated excellence and perseverance across all courses. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to each of these students and encourage everyone to maintain their dedication as we enter Semester Two.

Recognising and celebrating accomplishments is integral to our Marist community. By acknowledging the contributions of others, we enrich the quality of our collective learning experience.

In the spirit of the Marist tradition, let us draw inspiration from Mary—a woman of courage, fortitude, and unwavering faith. Her example teaches us to persist even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. We, too, are part of a greater plan, and our commitment to learning contributes to our personal growth and the wellbeing of our College community. As we reflect on Semester One, take pride in your achievements. Today’s celebration includes a sense of satisfaction—a reminder of our shared journey. Now, looking ahead to Semester Two, I encourage you to embrace challenges within the classroom. Revisit your My Marist Compass goals, showcase your unique gifts, and always strive for excellence.

NAIDOC Week

On June 26th, our College gathered to celebrate NAIDOC Week ahead of it taking place in the holidays from July 7th to 14th. We heard from staff and students about the history and significance of this celebration, as well as a moving speech from a special guest, Ms Hannah Owen — a member of our parent community at MSCW. Hannah shared her story with much heart and humour, and gave advice for connecting with those who outwardly or initially may seem very different to ourselves.

We finished the assembly with the handing over of our individual staff action plans as a commitment to reconciliation. Well done in particular to Indie in Year 12 for her touching and personalised Acknowledgement of Country, honouring the Wallumedegal people as the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet each day at school.

The City of Ryde has a special event on Friday 12th to celebrate NAIDOC Week. You can find out more information here or in the flyer included later in the newsletter: https://www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/Events/NAIDOC-Week
