Over the break

Cambodia Immersion

During the July holidays, seven students from Year 11 and 12 were accompanied by Mr Ryan Leonard and Mrs Carolyn Criss to Cambodia. The Catholic Mission-led Immersion experience provided an opportunity for our students to discover the grassroots work of the church through accessing the challenges and joys of the local people and gaining a better understanding of the communities culture and faith.

These opportunities are only possible when there is support from our own community. I thank Mr Leonard and Mrs Criss for supporting our students in this opportunity.

CASE Junior Space School

Also during the July holidays we had twelve students from Years 7-9 who travelled with Ms Brooke Cleggett and the Actura team to the USA on a hands-on adventure, where students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in STEAM experiences.

College Works

Over the break in addition to the College’s scheduled maintenance program, the following upgrades also took place.

Update and refurbishment of the student toilet amenity blocks.

Coutouvre
The Flat
Stair and Walkways Upgrade

The College’s external stairs, landing’s and pathways were repainted and offer a refreshed overall look to these areas.

Start of the Term

College Musical – Frozen Jnr.

As we are all very much aware, last week we reached performance week of the 2023 College Musical Frozen Jr. What a fantastic week we had! After 9 months of rehearsals, we were very excited and proud to present the show to our College and the broader community.

My congratulations goes to all students who performed in this show, both from MSCW and Holy Cross, Ryde and St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill. Congratulations also to those who were part of the crew. Without them, the show would not have been possible.

I extend my gratitude to the support of Dr Ireland and the staff who assisted with supervision and running the refreshments bar at the performance. My thanks goes to our ex-students, Olivia Enright, Ashleigh McCurtayne and Esther Monk who assisted in the choreography. A particular thank you must also go to Mrs Caroline Marsh, Ms Monique Shippen, Ms Christina O’Neill, Ms Robyn Purcell, Mrs Wendy Chappell, Mr Sam Burridge, and additional music staff, for their work in their specialised areas; and finally, to Ms Jo George and Ms Emma Hughes for the many, many hours of our work together not just at the rehearsals but also in our planning meetings over the last twelve months!

World Youth Day – Lisbon 2023

On Friday 21 July, ten of our students across Year 10 and 11 began their faith journey with Ms Jenny Vu to World Youth Day in Lisbon. Our students and staff will personally experience with the rest of the world the universality of the Catholic Church. They will share their experiences with other young people during this faith journey.

We wish Ms Vu and our students well and safe travels to World Youth Day in Lisbon via Italy: 21 July – 11 August.

Sydney Catholic Schools Grand Final

On Wednesday our Intermediate Netball Team and Intermediate Soccer Team each played in the grand final of the SCS Championships. Congratulations to both Teams for their fantastic effort, playing with much grit, skill and determination. Our Intermediate Soccer Team were successful winners of their competition. Thanks to Mrs Healey for coaching the Netball and Mr Story for coaching Soccer.

Upcoming

Year 12 Parents

Our school is using the Perspectives: Graduating Year 12 surveys developed by AISNSW to support our school improvement endeavours. The information gathered will assist in furthering the growth and development of our school community. We will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

This survey has been specifically designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of stakeholders’ perceptions of four important areas: School Environment, Teaching and Learning, Student Wellbeing and Post School. All Year 12 students and parents/ guardians will be invited to participate.

The surveys will be available from 14th August to 1st September and are conducted online, taking approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. The survey link will be distributed via email to all from ‘evidence@aisnsw.edu,au’ on behalf of the school.

Year 12 Trials

Over the next two weeks, our Year 12 Students will engage in their HSC Trial Exams. This is a very important time for our Year 12 Students. I remind the Year 12 Students to give of their best in the preparation for these exams; to stay well rested, eat well and focused. While there is still plenty of work to be done after returning from exams, these Trial Exams are a good practise for what lies ahead in their HSC Exams.

I ask the College community to keep our Year 12 Students in our thoughts and prayers.

A prayer for Year 12:

Undertaking Exams

Loving God
be with them,
as they prepare for their exams.

Thank you for the many talents and gifts you have
given them and for the opportunity of education.

Calm their nerves and anxiety, help them
to remember all that they have studied,
to express it clearly and to answer the questions
the very best that they can.

Holy Spirit, sit with them in their exam
– and always.

In Jesus’ name

Amen

Good Luck Year 12!

Our Year 12 students are about to embark on their HSC Trial Examinations, and we extend our heartfelt wishes for their success in the upcoming two weeks. These students have demonstrated dedication in their preparation, collaborating closely with their teachers. I am truly impressed by the commitment shown by those who participated in holiday workshops and SCS Masterclasses, and I express my gratitude to the teachers who supported them during the break.

I recall my Tutor Teacher at secondary school, Mr O’Shea. He told me once before exams: “You don’t need luck because you have talent”. And, so, as I reflect on his wise words to me, I say the same to our Year 12s:

Use your talents and demonstrate what you do know, and what you can do! No luck is needed. Believe in yourself.

Attendance

Attendance in class is one of the most critical aspects of learning. Deep learning is relational and relies on the interaction between the learner, the teacher, and the learner and other learners. Not being in class significantly impacts how the learner can process new knowledge and skill acquired and then process in such a way as to draw significant meaning and understanding. Being in class is a legal requirement and an essential element in the learning process.

Applications for Student Leave

Please note that under the Education Act NSW (1990) there is a legal requirement of parents/carers to ensure students are at school each day. The College’s long-standing position has been that requests for leave made during school terms should only be made in exceptional circumstances. These include:

  • Elite sporting representation;
  • Paid acting work;
  • Travel for bereavement reasons.

Applications for leave for family holidays mid-term will be declined as they are not in the best educational interests of a student.

From the Religious Education Coordinator

In our Church ……

Saints Joachim and Anne

On 26 July, The Church celebrated the life of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, Jesus’ grandparents- Mary’s parents. In the Scriptures, Matthew and Luke furnish a legal family history of Jesus, tracing ancestry to show that Jesus is the culmination of great promises. Not only is his mother’s family neglected, we also know nothing factual about them except that they existed. Even the names “Joachim” and “Anne” come from a legendary source written more than a century after Jesus died.

The strong character of Mary in making decisions, her continuous practice of prayer, her devotion to the laws of her faith, her steadiness at moments of crisis, and her devotion to her relatives—all indicate a close-knit, loving family that looked forward to the next generation even while retaining the best of the past.

We believe that Jesus is truly God and truly human, and this feast of his grandparents is a testimony to that faith. While the names Joachim and Anne may be legendary, we know that Jesus had grandparents in the parents of Mary (as well as those of Saint Joseph). Our God truly became human and lived among us. World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, 23 July

Pope Francis decided in 2021 to institute a Church-wide celebration of a World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. He was moved to establish it not just because of the importance of grandparents and the elderly, a theme on which he has often spoken, but particularly because of the neglect and isolation so many grandparents and seniors experienced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel restrictions, nursing-home policies and fear for their safety prevented their being visited and embraced by their loved ones.

Pope Francis hopes that, on this day, grandchildren will visit their grandparents, perhaps even sharing with them a copy of his letter, and that parish families will have special Masses thanking God for the gift of grandparents, praying for them, and entrusting to him those who have died, particularly during the pandemic.

The choice of the fourth Sunday of July is transparently to connect it, as closely as possible, to the July 26 feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus. This link to Jesus’ family tree and to salvation history suggests that everyone’s genealogy and personal prehistory is part of the providential plan of God.

Pope Francis, in his message used the quote “I am with you always” (Mt 28:20) summoning grandparents to recognize and be renewed in their sacred calling to be guardians of the connection between their family’s history and salvation history and to pass on to younger generations a clear awareness of their place in the bigger picture.(from https://www.ncregister.com/blog/world-day-of-grandparents-and-elderly-fourth-sunday-of-july) MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS  FOR THE FIRST WORLD DAY FOR GRANDPARENTS AND THE ELDERLY

In our Community….

SCS Stage 4 Evangelisation Day

On Wednesday, 28th June, Sydney Catholic Schools hosted the Stage 4 Evangelisation Day at Aquinas College, Menai, which brought together enthusiastic Year 7 and Year 8 students from across Sydney, including 15 Year 7 and Year 8 students from Marist Sisters’ College. The theme of the day was “Walking with the Holy Spirit in our Hearts” by recognising that ‘Love is God’ and ‘God is Love’ in today’s society. The day included a variety of guest speakers, pizza lunch, ice breakers, singing, trivia, dancing and the afternoon with Eucharistic Adoration.

“I enjoyed listening to what the guest speakers had to say about the Holy Spirit, and it was good to learn about the significance of God and the Holy Spirit, as well as ways to strengthen bonds with God. I also enjoyed the fun aspects of the day, such as trivia, and of course, the pizza lunch! It was a lovely day, and on behalf of the students who attended the Evangelisation Day, we’d like to offer a very special thank you to Ms Ison for coming with us and organising the day, and another special thank you to Ms Vu who also organised the day.”

– Lola Christopoulos, Year 8 Student

Through prayer, reflection, and shared experiences, the students explored ways to live out their faith and embrace their role as compassionate and empathetic members of the community. As they returned to Marist Sisters’ College after this spiritually enriching day, the students carried with them a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper connection to their faith, ready to make a positive impact in the community.

CAMBODIA IMMERSION6 to 15 July

Going into the immersion, our attitude was one of positivity and awareness of the need to adapt to any situation. Throughout our trip, this was put to the test by the many different experiences, challenges and connections that were present throughout.

One of the highlights included teaching young students an English lesson at multiple Cambodian schools. This time in class with the students and also spending time with students at the Marist Center or Hope Hostel allowed us to create new friendships and strong connections. Leaving these students was very hard for the group as we were spending quality time with them every day and created unforgettable relationships.

We immersed ourselves in Cambodian history by visiting the S21 Prison and the Killing Fields, the Angkor Wat Temples, and we received a blessing from a Monk at the Peace Cafe. Experiencing real-life Cambodian culture through visiting family homes and eating traditional Cambodian meals overall created valuable life lessons.

We were also provided opportunities to visit the local food and clothing markets. At the food markets we purchased all of the food which we would prepare for dinner that night. This allowed all of us girls to contribute to a different way of cooking and working together to make a Cambodian style meal.

All of the opportunities involved in this immersion were selected and organised by both the Catholic Mission and the Marist Brothers. Our day-to-day activities from what we were eating to which places we would visit were taken care of for us and allowed us to completely immerse ourselves with no stress and worries. We are so thankful for the Catholic Mission and the Marist Brothers for providing this immersion experience and allowing us to have the best opportunities and experiences.

This trip has allowed every girl to experience new feelings of gratitude towards the lives we live in Australia and opened our eyes towards these people living in Cambodia every day. The whole group has made unforgettable memories over the 10 days that will last forever and will continue to develop in the after phase of the immersion.

Brianna Kelly, Year 11 Student

A huge thank you to Ms Carolyn Criss and Mr Ryan Leonard for experiencing this wonderful immersion with the students.  I would also like to thank Catholic Mission for organising and leading the immersion.  Also a big thank you to the families that put their trust in the College and Catholic Mission to allow their daughters to experience this amazing opportunity. And lastly, to the students: Brianna Kelly, Melodie Brown, Sophie Marsh, Freya Bosnich, Sarah Bell, Abby Irving and Bronte Fisher for having the courage to step outside their comfort zone and immerse themselves in the Cambodian culture.

WORLD YOUTH DAY UPDATE

We have heard from our Marist Sisters’ College students and Ms Vu on their travels so far at World Youth Day…..

“Finally arrived in Rome! Our World Youth Day pilgrims set off to explore the city including the Colosseum, Pantheon and mass at the Basilica of St Paul. Pilgrims indulged in a gelato while admiring the history of the ancient city.”  Ms Jenny Vu

We keep in our thoughts and prayers: Ms Vu, Kaia Wilkowska, Sarah Khoury, Hannah Khoury, Alliyah Gagliano, Annabella Di Marco, Indianna Fell, Angelika Fuda, Dion Esposito, Sienna Reid and Eva Tiani as they travel to Lisbon via Italy for World Youth Day.

  • Wednesday 30 August: Father’s Day Mass and Breakfast
  • Wednesday 6 September: Marist Connect Evening
  • Friday 8 September: Year 8 Reflection Day- Compulsory Event for Year 8

In our Curriculum….

This coming Monday, our Year 12 students will commence two weeks of Trial HSC Examinations. As a Marist Sisters’ College Community, we will keep them in our prayers for what can be a stressful and anxious time:

Dear Lord

We ask for your blessing on our students undertaking their Trial HSC Examinations over the coming weeks. Grant them the confidence they deserve from their years of diligent study. Grant them the ability to comprehend questions and effectively plan and articulate their responses. May they be enriched by the gifts of the Holy Spirit – Wisdom, Understanding, Fortitude and Knowledge. May their faith and piety give them the strength to face these examinations and the satisfaction of achieving their personal best.

We ask these things through Christ Our Lord,

Amen.

We wish our Year 12 students all the best!

CLICK HERE – MSCW Learning & Wellbeing Framework

The MSCW Learning and Wellbeing Framework is unique to Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich as it is centred on the students that form this thriving Catholic learning community in partnership with staff and their families.

Sisters for Life

Positive connections impact an individual’s motivation and thus strengthen their engagement in learning and creates a safe and supportive environment. How individuals feel about school is related to the quality of the relationships they experience within the community.

As a result of establishing and maintaining sisterly relationships, students are empowered to demonstrate their courage and share their gifts as they promote social connection, critical thinking, and active participation, which promotes attendance levels, achievement and ultimately an individual’s self-worth.

Sisterly relationships are established through the House system that supports and facilitates student and staff connections through Community Time events. Skills in establishing and maintaining positive relationships are explicitly taught through the evidence-based Wellbeing Curriculum in Years 7-10 that focuses on developing Social Emotional Learning of students.

Empathy and inclusivity are strengthened through opportunities to give back and doing things for others without the expectation of anything in return. Students are encouraged to engage in service of others through Marist Service where they demonstrate their commitment to being Marist Women of Action.

IMPACT -> Makes a lasting difference to the health and well-being of young people.

Improves senior students personal understanding of General Practice, where and how a GP can help with their physical and mental health so that they develop into health wise adults.

Increase in their knowledge can also help put parents’ mind at ease. By having their senior student children participate in the program they can be assured their daughter will be better equipped to deal with life’s health challenges – physical and emotional.

Students will acquire the relevant know-how for when and what to consult a GP about.

In this edition of SchoolTV – Yr 12 Exam Stress

Students in their final year of school are considered a high-risk group for depression and anxiety. Sleep deprivation, diet and social media are some of the biggest issues faced by this group of teens. Therefore it is vitally important that a student’s mental health is looked after as well as their physical health.

Keeping things in perspective for students and parents alike, can help prevent everyone getting overwhelmed. Although this final year is important, it will not be the most important year of your child’s life.

There are many strategies that students can implement to help themselves. Parents can provide support, not only emotionally, but also practically by keeping their child well-nourished and encouraging physical activity.

In this special report, parents will find useful tips to support their child during this often stressful time.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your daughter, please contact her Tutor Teacher or House Coordinator for further information or seek medical or professional help.

UAC News

All 2024 courses from UAC’s participating institutions will be available on UAC’s website in early August.

For students who have already applied, this is a good time to log in to your application and review and update preferences.

Early Bird closing date for course preferences is  Friday 29 September, at which time the processing fee increases. Even if you’re not sure what course you want to study, students should apply before then and put in any course as a placeholder until they are ready to decide.  Current Early Bird processing fee is $78.

In early August, an email will be sent all Year 12 students who haven’t applied to remind them of their UAC PIN. PINs will be emailed to the address they have registered with NESA, so they need to ensure that this is a current email address.

To start a UAC application, students will need their NESA Year 12 student number and their UAC PIN. Once they have applied, they use their UAC application number and UAC PIN to log in and manage their application.

If students don’t have their UAC PIN email, or are having problems with their PIN, they can read the PIN FAQs or contact UAC.

University of Sydney | ARTiculate – PDHPE: Health Equity in Australia Today August 3, 2023

Although Australia provides ‘universal’ healthcare through the publicly funded Medicare scheme, enormous health disparities exist among and across our population. Clinical services are often unequally available according to the ‘postcode lottery’ of where you were born. Numerous elements contribute to widely divergent health outcomes including sex, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic and migrant status, educational attainment and occupation, access to housing, the build environment and transport infrastructure, legacies of colonialism, and more.

In this seminar, Katherine Kenny, Kellie Burns, Cristyn Davies and Imogen Harper will discuss how health is socially patterned – not just individually achieved or experienced – in ways that systematically advantage some people over others. In addition to exploring some of the causes and experiences of inequality, we also highlight how better health equity might be achieved, especially for young people, in Australia today.

Hunters Hill Day Photography Competition

‘Life is Better in Shades of Pink’

We would like to congratulate Eva Koukounaris of our Y9 Photography and Digital Media class on winning the Hunters Hill Day Photography Competition. Students in Hunters Hill local government areas were asked to submit their original photo of something that they feel exemplifies and conveys the character and spirit of Hunters Hill. As the winning entry Eva’s work will be featured in the lead up to Hunters Hill Day (31 July) through Council’s communications channels and a feature on her will be included in the online newsletter. In addition to this her work will be featured in the Hunter’s Hill Council Annual Report, which is published in November.

Congratulations Eva we are very proud of you!

Foundress Day

30 June commemorates the feast day of our Foundress Jeanne-Marie Chavion. To honour this sacred day, the College celebrated Foundress Day; an annual celebration of our Marist faith, sisterhood and love. In doing this, the College attended mass at St Mary’s Cathedral, concluding with a leadership handover ceremony. Once returned back at school we travelled to different areas around our beautiful school area of Woolwich. Marcellin and Chavion travelled to Clarke’s Point, Colin and Jaricot to the Horse’s Paddock, and Chanel and Perroton to Weil Park. Students mingled and conversed with peers in their tutor groups while sharing a ‘Blue and White’ picnic. The students were encouraged to bring picnic blankets, food and decorations in the colours of blue and white, to symbolise the presence of Mary in our College community and remind us of the divinity and love she carried. Students also participated in house competitions, such as capture the flag, relays, and dodgeball, filling the day with some healthy competition. Foundress Day gave students the opportunity to grow stronger connections with their sisters, developing a bond that will foster “Sisters for Life”. It was a delightful day for the College and a great way to end our leadership journey and welcome the new student leaders for 2023-2024.

Space Camp 2023

Over the holiday break 12 students from Marists Sisters’ College travelled to the USA to engage in two weeks of STEM activities with a focus on space exploration.

During the first week students were located in Houston, Texas. Students had the opportunity to watch a baseball game, visit the health museum, the natural science museum and the Houston Space Center. When students were not out visiting attractions they were engaging in STEM based activities and engaging in presentations. The focus of the week was the ‘7 habits of highly effective people’ to equip students with necessary skills for life. Throughout the first week the students were grouped with Merici College from Canberra,  where they made many new friends when engaging in STEM based activities and solving current issues with space travel.

After a week students travelled to Huntsville , Alabama to engage in the space camp program at the U.S space and Rocket Center. During their time at Space camp students worked as a team to confront mission scenarios that required critical thinking and problem solving. Students were also immersed in astronaut training techniques using equipment adapted from NASA’s astronaut program. They learnt about space hardware, enjoyed an educational water activity and experienced a spaceflight mission while learning about aerospace career opportunities.
