From the Principal

At MSCW, we remain deeply committed to ensuring every young woman is known, valued and supported throughout her learning journey. As part of this commitment, I am pleased to share an important and positive development in our College’s wellbeing structure.

Beginning in 2027, MSCW will introduce a Year Coordinator model, with dedicated leaders appointed to each year group. These staff will work closely with students to support their learning, wellbeing and holistic formation, ensuring every young woman is guided with care, consistency and purpose. This model strengthens our capacity to walk alongside students, helping them flourish academically, socially and emotionally.

This enhanced approach will allow for more comprehensive and responsive support. Year Coordinators will be able to build strong relationships with students, understand the unique needs of each cohort, and foster a deeper sense of unity and sisterhood. Their presence will help create year‑group communities where students feel safe, connected and empowered to discover their gifts.

This shift reflects our ongoing commitment to nurturing young women who grow in confidence, resilience and purpose. MSCW students recognise their strengths, embrace challenges, and flourish through supportive relationships.

I want to emphasise that our House system remains an integral and valued part of our identity. The Houses are woven into our traditions, our Marist story and the spirit of belonging that defines MSCW. This will not change.

Staff and students will continue to belong to their House, and there will remain many opportunities for House connection and celebration. Our House Masses, College Carnivals and Gala Days will continue unchanged, nurturing House spirit, camaraderie and healthy competition. These experiences remain central to who we are, our Marist spirit and our College life.

This adjustment to our wellbeing structure is an exciting step forward for our community. It aligns with our vision for holistic education and strengthens our ability to support the formation of young women who are confident, compassionate and ready to contribute to the world.

As we prepare for this transition, further details will be shared with families next term. We are committed to ensuring a smooth and thoughtful implementation that places student wellbeing at the centre.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership and trust. Together, we look forward with enthusiasm to this next chapter in the life of our College… a chapter grounded in growth, connection and the flourishing of every young woman entrusted to our care.

God bless,

Ms Rachel Sampson, Principal

The Baptist’s Final Sermon

Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist, August 29

Herod was the one who had John the Baptist arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. Mark 6:17–19

Today’s memorial recalls one of the most appalling acts of murder the world has ever known, surpassed only by the crucifixion of the Son of God. Saint John the Baptist stands as a towering figure in Salvation History. Though God raised up many prophets from the time of Israel’s founding, none was greater than John, as our Lord Himself declared, “Among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:11).

John was miraculously conceived by elderly parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth, after long years of barrenness. The Archangel Gabriel foretold his birth, identifying him as the one who would go before the Lord “in the spirit and power of Elijah” (Luke 1:17). According to ancient Christian tradition, John was sanctified in his mother’s womb at the moment of the Visitation. When the Blessed Virgin Mary, newly pregnant with the Son of God, greeted her kinswoman Elizabeth, “the infant leaped in her womb,” and Elizabeth was “filled with the Holy Spirit” (Luke 1:41).

From the desert, John preached repentance, preparing hearts for the coming of the Messiah. But his boldness went beyond gentle invitations to conversion. He confronted the most powerful of his time, publicly rebuking Herod Antipas for his unlawful union with Herodias, his brother’s wife. This courageous act of prophetic truth-telling cost John his freedom and, ultimately, his life.

Reflect today on your own willingness to imitate Saint John’s bold fidelity. How far are you willing to go to proclaim the Gospel to those who need it most? No sacrifice is too great, no cost too high when it comes to responding to Christ’s call. Give everything for the Truth, and your witness will bear eternal fruit.

My sorrowful Lord, Your Heart was grieved at the death of Saint John the Baptist, yet it also rejoiced in his unwavering fidelity to the truth he proclaimed with boldness and love. Fill me, too, with the spirit and power of Elijah, that I may carry on the proclamation of salvation in the way You have called me, even to the shedding of my blood, if You so will. Jesus, I trust in You.

RCIY – Sacrament of Reconciliation

Last Thursday, students gathered at St Kevin’s Parish for a beautiful Sacrament of Confirmation service. It was a wonderful combined celebration, uniting candidates from Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich—including Mackenzie and Roisin—alongside students from Holy Cross College and Marist College Eastwood.

The service was led by Fr Greg from the Ryde-Gladesville Parish, marking a significant milestone for all the students involved.

We are pleased to announce that we will be running the sacramental program again in 2027 for any interested students.

From the Leader of Learning and Curriculum

From the Leader of Learning and Curriculum

As we move through the final weeks of Term 3, students across the College are engaging with significant milestones in their learning. This period offers valuable opportunities for reflection, purposeful preparation, and steady routines as students work toward their upcoming examinations and future pathways. The following updates outline key events and support for students and families in the coming weeks.

Year 12: Using Trial Exam Feedback to Build Momentum

Year 12 students have now completed their Trial HSC Examinations and received their results and feedback. The feedback from Trials is the most valuable set of insights students will receive before the HSC, as these exams closely mirror the structure, intensity, and expectations of the final examinations.

Students are encouraged to use their Trial experience; the successes, the challenges, and the detailed teacher feedback to guide their preparation for the HSC, now just over a month away. This period is often when students experience the most significant growth in their marks, provided they maintain consistent study routines and balance their preparation with healthy habits and selfcare.

Families can support this process by continuing open conversations at home, helping students plan ahead, and encouraging them to act on the feedback they have received.

Year 11: Preparing for Preliminary Examinations

Preliminary Examinations are fast approaching, and for Year 11 this will be the largest and most comprehensive set of exams they have completed to date. Preparing well in advance is essential. Students should be planning their study across the coming weeks, mapping out when they will revise each subject, and avoiding lastminute cramming.

To support their preparation, students are encouraged to access the Enhanced Learning Study Skills resources available through the College:

Study Skills Resources

  • Website: www.studyskillshandbook.com.au
  • Username: MSCW
  • Password: 93success

These resources offer practical strategies for revision, organisation, and managing study effectively.

Years 8 and 10: Finalising Subject Selections

Both Year 8 and Year 10 have now finalised their subject selections for 2027. The College would like to thank families and students for their genuine engagement throughout the process. The thoughtful discussions, careful consideration, and collaborative decisionmaking that have taken place at home and at school are a testament to the commitment shown by our community.

Subject selection is an important milestone, and the energy invested in these decisions will support students as they move into the next stage of their learning journey.

Looking Ahead

Across the College, it has been encouraging to see students engaging positively with their learning and taking responsibility for their progress. Whether they are preparing for major exams, acting on feedback, or making decisions about future pathways, our students continue to show resilience, curiosity, and a desire to do their best. With the support of families and the guidance of their teachers, they are well placed for a purposeful and productive end to the term.

Youth Ministry News

2026 Evangelisation Day
On 12 August, a group of students in Years 7 and 8 attended the 2026 Evangelisation Day at Mount Saint Joseph College, Milperra, which joined schools from across the Archdiocese of Sydney for a day of faith, reflection, and community. This year’s theme, “Trust in the Lord for true peace and strength,” encouraged students to pause and reflect on their own faith journeys and consider how they can seek goodness in their everyday lives.

Throughout the day, students took part in a variety of engaging activities that promoted personal growth, connection with others, and deeper exploration of their faith.

The experience offered a meaningful opportunity for students to strengthen their relationship with God, build new friendships, and share in a vibrant celebration of faith with peers from across Sydney.

Year 7 & 8 Youth Afternoon
On Friday 21 August, a group of our Year 7 and 8 students attended the Youth Afternoon hosted at Marist College, Eastwood. The gathering offered a welcoming space for students to connect through icebreakers before moving into a thoughtful talk and activity focused on prayer, encouraging them to reflect on how they can bring moments of stillness and faith into their daily lives.

The evening concluded with a beautiful Mass, giving students the chance to come together in worship and finish the day grounded in community and shared faith. It was a simple yet meaningful experience that strengthened friendships and supported students in their ongoing spiritual growth.

Year 11 Legal Studies Incursion

Our Year 11 Legal Studies students recently had the opportunity to spend the morning with Inspector Robertson and Senior Constable Duncan from the NSW Police Public Order and Riot Squad, gaining valuable insight into the role of policing within the legal system and its response to a range of criminal offences.

During the session, Inspector Robertson and Senior Constable Duncan explored key aspects of their work, including their responsibilities as police officers, the use of force in carrying out their duties, and the challenges of balancing the rights to freedom of speech and protest with the need to maintain public safety and community order. They also discussed the prevalence of organised crime networks, the role of social media in facilitating recruitment and criminal activity, and the impact of mental health issues on contemporary policing.

Through the sharing of real-life experiences and case studies, students were able to deepen their understanding of the legal concepts studied in the classroom and make meaningful connections between theory and practice.

This informative incursion has provided our Year 11 Legal Studies students with a strong foundation as they look forward to commencing the HSC Core Topic on Crime.

National Science Week

During Week 5, MSCW celebrated National Science Week 2026 under the theme:

“Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All.”

Throughout the week, students engaged in interactive classroom activities and gathered for a popular lineup of lunchtime events, starting with an explosive Science Show Spectacular on Monday. Students applied their collaborative problem-solving skills to unlock the SEED Vault during an Escape Room challenge, and enjoyed fresh ice cream made using liquid nitrogen during Friday’s Sub Zero demonstration. With daily science competitions keeping minds active in Jarnosse, our students truly embraced the opportunity to cultivate their critical thinking.

We look forward to seeing our next generation of MSCW scientists continue to grow!

Year 9 Visual Arts Artist Incursion

Year 9 Visual Arts students recently participated in a dynamic ceramics workshop led by multidisciplinary artist and ceramicist Christian Bonett. Drawing inspiration from contemporary ceramic artist Mechelle Bounpraseuth, students created hand-built sculptures of pigeons and ibis birds using a range of ceramic techniques, including slab building, coiling, and sculpting.

Throughout the workshop, students explored how contemporary artists transform familiar subjects into playful and thought-provoking artworks. Incorporating humour and elements of postmodern practice, students challenged traditional perceptions of these often-overlooked urban birds while developing their technical skills and creative confidence.

Once fired and glazed, the individual sculptures will be combined to form a collaborative installation artwork, celebrating both collective creativity and contemporary approaches to ceramics. We thank Christian for sharing his expertise and providing our students with an engaging and inspiring creative experience.

Year 9 Photography and Digital Media
Year 9 Photography and Digital Media students recently participated in a hands-on product photography workshop led by photographer, visual director, and multidisciplinary creative Claudia Lowe.

Responding to a series of mock client briefs, students worked in teams to plan, style, and photograph advertising campaigns for a range of products, including skincare, beverages, coffee, and sustainable consumer goods. Through experimentation with lighting, composition, styling, and visual storytelling, students explored how photographers use creative decisions to communicate a brand’s identity and engage an audience.

The workshop provided students with valuable insight into contemporary commercial photography and the creative industries, while encouraging collaboration, problem-solving, and creative confidence. We thank Claudia for sharing her expertise and inspiring our students through this authentic industry experience.

Year 9 Camp

In week 5, Year 9 Students travelled to Camp Somerset, along the Colo River and took part in a three day, two night camp. The experience was filled with both challenging and fun activities such as canoeing, bushwalking, archery, abseiling, rock climbing, obstacle courses, river run and sleeping in tents. Each activity encouraged students to step outside of their comfort zone, and that our Year 9 group did with enthusiasm and bravery.

Students also navigated their way along the Colo River from activity to activity and cooked and prepared all meals. Highlights were the “My Campsite Rules” challenge where students selected a cuisine and key ingredients to cook dinner.

The Year 9 Courage Cup was up for grabs. House points were awarded to students when they demonstrated Courage and aspects of our Marist Compass for Life. The challenge to take home the cup was welcomed by all of Year 9 with joy and excitement. The winners of this year’s Year 9 Courage Cup will be announced during Empower in Week 8.

We are proud of our Marist students who courageously challenged themselves, learnt new skills and built new meaningful relationships with others during this experience.

Canteen News

Dear Parents and Students

Thank you for your continued support of the College Canteen. Please note the following information regarding online lunch order:

Order Cut-off Time

Lunch orders must be placed by 7:45am each morning.

Cancellations

It is the responsibility of the account holder to cancel any orders.

Cancellations must be made before 7:45am on the day of the order.

Orders in Advance

To avoid the morning rush, we strongly recommend placing orders in advance, ideally for the entire upcoming week.

Collection of Orders

Please ensure your daughter is aware when a lunch order has been placed, as:

  • Orders that are not collected will not be sent to the Student Office
  • No refunds can be provided for uncollected food, as items such as salads, sandwiches and wraps are freshly prepared
Early Collection Options

If your daughter needs to leave early, lunch can be collected early at the the following times via flexischools:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday: 12:30pm
  • Thursday 11:15am

If lunch is required before these times, we recommend purchasing food directly at the Canteen register during recess instead of placing an online lunch order.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Canteen Staff

Parents and Carers

Please remind your daughters to collect their lunch orders from the Canteen.

If your daughter is going off to early sport on a Thursday, the student should collect their lunch order from the Canteen before they depart for their sporting venue.

Change to Flexischools

Due to the increase of online orders, the cut off time will now be 7:45 am!

Please order as soon as you are able to.

Flexischools is the system for students to order lunch online and to purchase over the counter in the Canteen. If you are new to this system we would encourage you to set up a Flexischools account. (Link: flexischools.com.au). The Canteen is a very busy area at lunchtime, so ordering online is the best option to ensure your daughter’s order is ready at the start of lunch and avoids any delays in purchasing over the counter.

All ID Compass Cards are to be used in the Canteen for picking up lunches and for Flexi Schools over the counter sales.

Please note Friday is always busy with online orders, please order early on Fridays to hopefully minimise issues you may experience. If you do have a problem please contact the Flexischool parent helpline Monday – Friday 7.00 am – Midday on 1300 361 769.

Students please see canteen staff for any assistance.

Calling on volunteers

The MSCW Canteen would love to welcome new and existing parents to help out. Any day and time you can spare or offer would be greatly appreciated by all, especially at recess and lunchtime with the pickup of lunches and service. If you are able to assist, please contact the Canteen via SMS on 0457 593 920.
