From the Principal

From the Principal

I had the privilege of attending the recent Year 7 Camp, and it was wonderful to witness our youngest MSCW students stepping into new adventures with such enthusiasm. For some, it was their first time away from home—a big milestone in itself. The students navigated unfamiliar settings, took on fresh challenges, and encouraged each other through every step. The comradery, encouragement and supportive shouts of “you got this!” were a genuine display of the sisterhood that is truly part of our MSCW culture.

I have always believed that camp plays a powerful role in students’ development. The time away from the classroom creates space for a different type of growth and learning. It was great to see new connections emerge and existing relationships strengthen as students braved the 30 metre high ‘Goliath’ giant swing, abseil down a rockface, take aim in archery or balance on the high ropes course. Students displayed courage and further developed their teamwork skills and confidence. Many discovered new gifts that they can share with the MSCW community.

I am very grateful to the dedicated staff who made this camp experience possible. Their care, encouragement and support created a safe and exciting environment for our students to thrive. I particularly thank Miss Grace Spurr, Assistant Leader of Wellbeing, who did an exemplary job in organising and leading the camp.

Many students and families were also treated to an impressive display of talent and passion at our recent and HSC Dance Showcase. Year 12 students performed their core performances for the upcoming HSC and were ably assisted by several younger dance students who performed the individual choreographed pieces of our senior students. This was another display of the sisterly relationships and genuine connection and support at MSCW.

The quality of each performance was impressive. Performing in front of a larger audience is an invaluable part of building confidence, stage presence, and composure under pressure. It’s also excellent preparation for the demands of the final HSC performances. Congratulations to all the performers and our dedicated staff who supported and guided the students.

Year 7 – 10 Parent/ Teacher/Student Conferences

To all Year 7–10 parents/carers, I strongly encourage you to attend our upcoming Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences. These important conversations offer a wonderful opportunity to build stronger connections between school and home, ensuring we are working together to support each student on their individual learning journey.

These conversations create a shared understanding of progress, strengths, and areas for growth. These interviews are not just about academic performance—they’re about nurturing confidence, motivation, and a clear sense of direction. Hearing directly from teachers provides valuable insight into your child’s development, and students benefit from being actively involved in the conversation about their learning and growth. We deeply value your role in this partnership and look forward to seeing every family engage in meaningful discussions that will help their daughter(s) thrive.

God Bless,

THE FEAST OF JEANNE-MARIE CHAVOIN

June 30 marked the 167th anniversary of the death of Jeanne-Marie Chavoin, revered foundress of the Marist Sisters.

Born in the village of Coutouvre in central France in 1786 the young Jeanne-Marie followed the call of the Colin brothers at Cerdon to establish the first community of Marist Sisters. Mother St Joseph, as she was known, died in 1858 at Jarnosse, not far from her birthplace.

Jeanne-Marie Chavoin, Foundress of the Marist Sisters, was a woman who lived simply and, like Mary, was attentive to the needs of others. As we recall the anniversary of her death we pray that like her we might always “try to live in a great spirit of faith which will lead us to see God in everything” (CMJ 90.3).

She is remembered as a courageous, large-hearted and generous woman. Her deep faith in God and love of Mary enabled her to be always ready to render service to those in need.

God of creation,
we praise and thank you for the birth of Jeanne-Marie Chavoin,
our foundress, Mother St Joseph.

We thank you for her parents, Théodore and Jeanne, for their love, their courage, their acceptance of responsibility and all they taught Jeanne-Marie.
We thank you for our own parents, the families which prepared us for life.

May Jeanne-Marie Chavoin intercede for us today,
that we may present a Marian face in our world –
a face of compassion, understanding and love,
a face which accepts people as they are,
yet encourages them to grow in goodness.

With them, may we be brought forth to the life of grace.
We pray this in the name of Jesus your Son.

The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (27 June)

In Catholic churches and homes, one of the most popular images of Jesus is the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is the image of God’s love revealed in the pierced heart of His Son. It is the symbol of a love that conquers sin and transcends death, the symbol of the One who loved us to the end.

The Friday that follows the Second Sunday in Time After Pentecost is the Feast of the Sacred Heart which brings to mind all the attributes of His Divine Heart mentioned above. Many Catholics prepare for this Feast by beginning a Novena to the Sacred Heart on the Feast of Corpus Christi, which is the Thursday of the week before. On the Feast of the Sacred Heart itself, we can gain a plenary indulgence by making an Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart.

From the earliest days of the Church, “Christ’s open side and the mystery of blood and water were meditated upon, and the Church was beheld issuing from the side of Jesus, as Eve came forth from the side of Adam. It is in the eleventh and twelfth centuries that we find the first unmistakable indications of devotion to the Sacred Heart. Through the wound in the side, the wound in the Heart was gradually reached, and the wound in the Heart symbolized the wound of love.” (Catholic Encyclopedia)

Prayers of Intercessions to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Open our hearts to receive your abundant gifts:

Make our hearts like yours.

Open our hearts to welcome all our sisters and brothers as your beloved friends:

Take away from us all prejudice and hardness of heart.

Open our hearts to feel the pain of your suffering people:

Turn our good intentions into acts of justice and mercy.

Open our hearts that we may speak for those whose voices are faint:

Give us the courage to challenge those systems and behaviours that compromise the dignity of people.

Open our hearts to forgive those who have caused us injury:

Let us grant forgiveness to others as God has granted forgiveness to us.

ACADEMIC REPORTS AND STAGE 4 & 5 ACADEMIC PROGRESS AWARDS

As we near the end of Semester One, it is essential to reflect upon our students’ achievements and celebrate their hard work, dedication, and learning in Years 7 to 10.  On Wednesday academic reports will be issued to parents and carers via COMPASS. The report is an invaluable tool that allows teachers and parents to assess a student’s progress. It overviews their academic performance, highlighting their achievements in various subjects, effort, behaviour, and overall growth.

The Stage 4 & 5 Progress Awards Assembly will take place on Monday, 20 June 2025. It is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate our students’ achievements. There will be two awards nominated by each class teacher for each subject in Years 7 to 10:

ACADEMIC MERIT

Awards for consistent and/or improved effort by students.

ACADEMIC PROGRESS

Awarded for high levels of academic achievement, commitment to learning and consistently strong aspiration during Semester One.

Beyond the symbolic significance of receiving an award, the Stage 4 & 5 Progress Awards Assembly is a powerful motivator for students. It reinforces the value of hard work, determination, and the pursuit of excellence. By publicly recognising student achievements, we encourage them to strive for greatness, set higher goals, and explore their full potential. It is important to remember that the awards are not solely about recognising the top achievers. We also value the progress and growth of each student, acknowledging their individual accomplishments and applauding their personal achievements.

Towards the year’s conclusion, more formal awards assemblies will be held to celebrate academic achievement, to which parents, carers and the broader College community will be invited.

In our Community ……

STAFF SPIRITUALITY DAY

Living Our Faith Through Service: Staff Spirituality Outreach Day

On our recent Staff Spirituality Day, the staff of MSCW embraced a different kind of day — one that took us beyond the school gates and into the heart of our wider community. Guided by our Gospel call to serve “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40), this special day was dedicated to outreach and active service.

Rather than gathering on campus for reflection and formation, our staff were sent out in the spirit of mission to various local charities and organisations. From St Vincent de Paul, Gift of Bread, House of Welcome, The Rev Bill Crews Foundation, OzHarvest, The Salvation Army – Sydney Streetlevel Mission, to Escabags and The Birthing Kit Foundation Australia, staff offered their time and hearts in the service of others.

It was a day deeply rooted in our Catholic values — of love, compassion, and solidarity with the poor and vulnerable. “Being able to serve others in this way reminded me why I chose to work in a Catholic school,” one staff member shared. “It was a chance to step into the community as the hands and feet of Christ.”

Each outreach placement became its own sacred space — full of encounters, stories, and moments of grace. Staff returned with full hearts, inspired by those they met and the work being done across our community to uphold human dignity and care for those in need.

May the fruits of our Staff Spirituality Outreach Day continue to inspire us all — staff, students, and families alike — to walk humbly, love generously, and serve joyfully.

MARIST SUPER CONNECT EVENING

Year 11 and 12 students recently had the exciting opportunity to participate in Marist Super Connect at Marist College Kogarah.

Joined by students from nine other Marist schools in the region, the night was filled with uplifting energy, meaningful workshops, and lots of laughter. Guided by the Marist Youth Ministry team, students explored themes of service and sustainability through interactive sessions that inspired action, collaboration and reflection.

Students participated in two of four inspiring workshops, each designed to help them reflect on what it truly means to look beyond, and embrace their calling as Pilgrims of Hope in 2025 and beyond.

From engaging games to new friendships, the event was a fantastic chance for students to connect, collaborate, and grow in the Marist spirit. We had a wonderful 13 of our inspiring students representing the College.

ENVIRONMENT WEEK 2025

As part of this year’s Environment Week campaign, our Social Justice and WSU Co-Captains have been leading the charge against plastic pollution.

Tutor groups have been growing beans in reused plastic bottles and cups, proving that even the smallest acts of reusing can spark meaningful change. Alongside that, students have also been getting creative with upcycled art, turning trash into thoughtful treasure. We’re eager to see which tutor group grows the tallest and healthiest bean….one reused bottle at a time!

Take a look at our student-made environment awareness ‘must watch’ movies and documentary list.

St Therese Denistone Stage Two Faith Retreat

On Wednesday 11th June, two students from Marist Sisters’ College participated in a Collaborative Network initiative with St Therese Catholic Primary School in Denistone. The retreat day was held at Mary Mackillop Place and was designed specifically for students to enhance their faith and deepen their relationship with God. In collaboration with Marist College, Eastwood, our students helped to facilitate the day for Stage Two students.

Thank you to our Year 9 students Ada Pessagno and Hannah Nader for their participation in the day.

Mr. Justin Salar, Religious Education Coordinator at St. Therese, Denistone commended Ada and Hannah for their service; “Their invaluable contributions and efforts truly made it a faith-filled and evangelising experience for all the students. It was wonderful to see both Ada and Hannah so engaged with our Stage 2 students. Their modelling of faith and knowledge for the students was truly commendable and had a significant impact.”

Year 7 Camp

Year 7 Camp is a wonderful opportunity for students to strengthen connections with their MSCW ‘sisters’, foster positive relationships and further develop their courage and resilience.

It was exciting to see Year 7 students participate in a range of activities in Week 7 as part of their Year 7 Camp experience. Students travelled to Stanwell Tops and took part in both challenging and fun activities from the giant swing, to survivor challenges, to high ropes courses, the treeline adventure, archery, orienteering and night time activities to name a few. Each activity encouraged students to support each other and step outside of their comfort zone, which our Year 7 group did with enthusiasm and bravery.

The Year 7 Camp Cup enabled students to gain House points when they demonstrated dimensions of their Marist Compass for Life. Throughout the camp students worked through challenges and demonstrated their Sisterly relationships as they supported each other, Courage was seen as students took risks and showed their independence, Empowerment was key as students became more confident in their abilities and students shared their many Gifts with their friends and camp groups. The challenge to take home the cup was welcomed by all of Year 7 with joy and eagerness. A big congratulations to Marcellin House, our 2025 Year 7 Camp Cup winners.

A huge thank you to our Year 7 Camp staff team who generously gave of their time to guide Year 7 through the camp experience. The staff team included; Mr Justin Hodges, Ms Leoni Hopkins, Ms Luisa Naventeri, Ms Laura Marshall, Mr Henry Davey, Ms Aleksandra Bridge, Ms Mary Domrow, Ms Melissa Carollo, Ms Brooke Cleggett, Ms Emily Naylor and Mrs Christine Iannello.

Marcellin Week

Marcellin Week

Week 6 provided the Marcellin House time to celebrate the founder of the Marist Brothers and the Patron of our House, St. Marcellin Champagnat, whose feast day is 6th June.

Marcellin was an educator who had a passion for teaching young disadvantaged people in France. It was through his community of brothers that many people around the world have received an education.

The Marcellin House celebrated by raising money for  Australian Marist Solidarity which focuses on projects to support locally sustained educational opportunities for young people in the Asia and Pacific regions. Over $800 was raised through lolly bags, bake sale and a spin-the-wheel game. More details of this organization can be found at: https://www.australianmaristsolidarity.org/

The highlight of the week was the Marcellin House Mass which was a wonderful celebration of the life of Marcellin Champagnat and gave the staff, students and parents the opportunity to catch up over supper. Thank you to all those who attended on that chilly June evening.

A special thanks to Charlotte, Amy and Olivia, our fabulous House Captains for all the preparation they did for the week and the other Marcellin girls who contributed lollies, cakes and their time to events. Great work girls!

Marcellin House Coordinator

Year 11 Music attended Sydney Conservatorium of Music

Year 11 Music recently attended an excursion to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. They were fortunate to attend an evening concert which was a staff recital featuring violin and piano, that included works by Mozart, Margaret Sutherland and Bartok. The excursion was to support their coursework for HSC Music 1 and Music 2. Students were able to see a professional music performance up close; admiring the expression, stylistic interpretation and exploration of musical elements by the performers. Students were mesmerised by the melodic interplay in the Mozart, amazed by the delicate harmonies in the Sutherland and surprised by the wide variety of instrumental techniques in the Sutherland. We also enjoyed the local eateries and the VIVID lights.

Year 9 Visual Arts

Year 9 Visual Arts students have been exploring their creativity and developing their painting techniques in the Places and Spaces unit.

With a strong focus on student voice and choice, each student captured their own photographic references and selected a painting style that reflects their personal interests and strengths. Whether working on a single artwork, diptych, or triptych, students are confidently expressing their artistic vision.

We can’t wait to share the finished pieces – stay tuned!

Building financially smart MSCW students of the future!

Our friends from Talk Money recently delivered a financial workshop for our Year 8 students. The program is aimed at equipping young Australians with fundamental money management skills for their lifetime.

Our Year 8 students really got stuck into some big ideas about money. They learnt about how their daily choices actually impact their savings and spending, and they picked up some neat tricks to make sure their money goes towards what they really care about. Plus, students gained skills to deal with social and advertising pressure that often try to persuade their spending habits. Most importantly, they learned how to set achievable money goals and even build solid savings plans to reach them – which felt pretty empowering!

According to feedback from students alongside members of the Maths Department, there is overwhelming agreement on the importance of this initiative in enhancing financial self-sufficiency and confidence.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 8 students for embracing this valuable learning opportunity, setting them on a path towards informed financial decision-making.

Canteen News

Parents and Carers

Please remind your daughters to collect their lunch orders from the Canteen.

If your daughter is going off to early sport on a Thursday, the student should collect their lunch order from the Canteen before they depart for their sporting venue.

Change to Flexischools

Due to the increase of online orders, the cut off time will now be 8:00 am!

Please order as soon as you are able to.

Flexischools is the system for students to order lunch online and to purchase over the counter in the Canteen. If you are new to this system we would encourage you to set up a Flexischools account. (Link: flexischools.com.au). The Canteen is a very busy area at lunchtime, so ordering online is the best option to ensure your daughter’s order is ready at the start of lunch and avoids any delays in purchasing over the counter.

All ID Compass Cards are to be used in the Canteen for picking up lunches and for Flexi Schools over the counter sales.

Please note Friday is always busy with online orders, please order early on Fridays to hopefully minimise issues you may experience. If you do have a problem please contact the Flexischool parent helpline Monday – Friday 7.00 am – Midday on 1300 361 769.

Students please see canteen staff for any assistance.

Calling on volunteers

The MSCW Canteen would love to welcome new and existing parents to help out. Any day and time you can spare or offer would be greatly appreciated by all, especially at recess and lunchtime with the pickup of lunches and service. If you are able to assist, please contact the Canteen via SMS on 0457 593 920.

This year on Foundress Day (2 July) the College is hosting a mini Fete, with food trucks, carnival games and of course a Chocolate Wheel.

  • Prize donations including Products and Services
  • Cash donations
  • Vouchers

Please contact Ms Jennifer Dove at the College (jennifer.dove@syd.catholic.edu.au) if you are able to support us.

Thank you so much for your continued generosity and support.
