Congratulations and Best Wishes to our 2022 Graduating Class

This week we have celebrated and acknowledged our Year 12 students as the Graduating Class of 2022. They began in earnest in 2017 as young Year 7 girls and now they are graduating as young Marist women equipped with their Marist Compass to take them on the next stage of their life journey. We acknowledge that the last couple of years have certainly been a challenging one for our girls, one that has developed in them much courage and resilience. As they graduate there is much hope for what their future will bring and they have determination and the skills to ‘take life in both hands’ and be ‘Marist women of action’. It is great to hear that so many have them have already received early entry into their chosen area of study. Over the past couple of weeks, it has been enjoyable to watch them reflect on their time at MSCW, listen to their funny stories as they reminisce as well as hear of the special memories of school that will remain with them forever.

During the week, the girls were excited when gifts arrived from our feeder primary schools. These gifts were very special as the primary school students had taken time to write personalised cards to the Year 12 students. The thoughtfulness and prayers of the Primary schools for our Year 12 students are very much appreciated.

Wednesday commenced with our formal Graduation Assembly acknowledging every student as they graduate from the College. The Assembly also included academic and special awards. Congratulations to the Year 12 students who received awards this year!

A full list of award recipients is available for you to view

Today began with the Year 12 Concert showcasing the creativity and fun nature of our Year 12’s. House/Tutor farewells followed, allowing the Tutor and House to thank their Year 12 students, for their support and care, particularly as their ‘big sisters’. It is these ‘sisterly relationships’ that are a special feature of the family atmosphere here at MSCW. These farewells included our traditional Carnation Ceremony. Each of these events have allowed us to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of our 2022 Year 12 students and give thanks for their time at Marist Sisters’.

As Year 12 conclude their time at MSCW, I would like to thank those who have encouraged and cared for the girls over the past six years: their parents and families, the Marist sisters, Fr Brian, Fr Aliki, Fr Greg Morgan, Fr Greg Walsh, the College Leadership Team, House Coordinators, Subject Coordinators, Tutor teachers, subject teachers and support staff.

Many thanks to the large team of staff who contributed to the organization of the many events to recognize and farewell Year 12. Special thanks to our Year 11 Parent Engagement Group who hosted the Year 12 Graduation Supper on Wednesday evening. It is this type of enthusiastic support that allows our parents to engage together socially while also giving back to the College.

I wish Year 12 calm minds and peaceful hearts over the coming weeks as they continue to prepare for their HSC. Many have registered for the HSC workshops in the holidays. These will continue to provide a structured focus in preparation for their HSC. I remind our Year 12 students to also look after their wellbeing with plenty of sleep, good nutritious meals and regular exercise as part of their study program.

As we begin this holiday period, I wish the entire College community a safe and well-earned break. May we all return to Term 4 refreshed and energized to complete the 2022 year successfully.

From the Assistant Principal

From the Assistant Principal

As we draw to the end of another school term, I would like to acknowledge the efforts made by so many of our students and staff over the course of this term.

This week we acknowledged the successes of our Year 12 students in the academic, sporting, cultural and service areas. Congratulations to all Year 12 Students in graduating from Marist Sisters’ College, Woolwich. We wish you well in your exams and your future endeavours beyond school.

I would like to thank the staff, both teaching and support staff, for their commitment to our students and their learning this semester.

I wish all students and staff a very restful break. May it be a time of rest and rejuvenation.

Year 12 Supper

On Wednesday evening, our Year 12 parents/carers and students celebrated their completion of their time here at the College with supper. Thank you to our Year 11 Parent Engagement volunteers, Year 11 Hospitality students and our staff who worked in the background and on the evening to ensure our Year 12 students and families enjoyed their graduation celebrations.

Term 4 Summer Uniform

All parents/carers and students are reminded that students return to school in Term 4, in summer uniform.

As there will be a number of girls who have had a growth spurt over the last two terms it is recommended that the length of uniform is checked before returning to school.

I ask for your assistance in ensuring that your daughter’s summer uniform complies with the College Uniform Policy. In particular:

  • The junior dress or senior skirt is to be worn at the correct length (hem finishes below the knee when the student is standing upright.)
  • The jumper is not to be worn to or from school unless under the blazer.
  • To avoid any uniform infringements, please also ensure that your daughter adheres to the College standards for hair, make-up, jewellery and nails.

COVID-19 regulations – Term 4

From the beginning of next week, staff, students and visitors who have tested positive to COVID-19 must:

  • complete 5 days of isolation from the date they test positive
  • be symptom-free before returning to school, if symptoms remain after day 5 they must continue following NSW Health guidelines to self-isolate and undertake a rapid antigen test
  • complete a rapid antigen test (RAT) and return a negative result before attending school on days 6 and 7 after testing positive to COVID-19
  • wear a mask on days 6 and 7 when attending school (for all staff and those students 12 years and older).

From the Religious Education Coordinator

St Paul in his letter to the Romans says that “love is the fulfilment of the law.” As we approach the end of Term 3, let us remember that the love of Jesus Christ for us, the love of Christians for Jesus Christ and the love of Christians for humanity is the answer for living our lives.

Celebrating Year 12 Graduation Mass

Thank you to our celebrating priests – Fr Greg Walsh from St Anthony’s Marsfield, Fr Steve Drum from Ryde Gladesville Parish and Fr Pawel Kopczynski from St Kevin’s Eastwood – for the joyful and prayerful Graduation Mass. Thank you to Mrs Caroline Marsh and the Bel Canto Choir for leading the singing during the Mass.

You are invited to pray the following prayer for our Year 12 students during their HSC examination period:

God our Father we ask that Year 12 students feel your closeness during the HSC examinations.

Give them calm hearts and quiet confidence in the knowledge that you hold them in the palm of your hand.

Bless them with keen understanding and a retentive memory.

Give them the ability to grasp things correctly, be exact in their explanations and an ability to express themselves clearly. Direct their progress and help them in the completion of each of their responses.

Holy Spirit send to them your gifts of wisdom and knowledge.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

House Farewell Year 12

Under the leadership of the House Coordinator, throughout the term Tutors have been working with their Tutor groups preparing to farewell their ‘sisters’ in  Year 12 who have journeyed with them every step of the way since their arrival at the College. The baton has been passed and the legacy of MSCW is now in the hands of those that continue to develop their compass for life as Year 12 moves beyond Woolwich Road seeking opportunities to use their gifts to positively contribute to and develop the world around us. Grace be with you all the Class of 2022.

How Can Parents Help?

Ask open-ended questions when you are checking in. Tell her what you have noticed over the past couple of days. You could state something like this  “I’ve noticed you haven’t been enjoying time being outside and active lately.” or “I’ve noticed that you haven’t asked to use the car for a couple of days to go and catch up with friends – what’s going on, is everything alright?” Sometimes identifying what you’ve noticed helps them to open up about it.

Students in their final year of school are considered a high-risk group for depression and anxiety. Sleep deprivation, diet and social media are some of the biggest issues faced by this group of teens. Therefore it is vitally important that a student’s mental health is looked after as well as their physical health.

Keeping things in perspective for students and parents alike can help prevent everyone from getting overwhelmed. Although this final year is important, it will not be the most important year of your child’s life.

There are many strategies that students can implement to help themselves. Parents can provide support, not only emotionally, but also practically by keeping their children well-nourished and encouraging physical activity.

In this special report, parents will find useful tips to support their child during this often stressful time.

We hope you take the time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your daughter, please contact her Tutor, House Coordinator or seek medical or professional help.

Evangelisation Day

On 26 August, a group of Year 7 and 8 students attended the Evangelisation Day at Holy Cross College. This day brought together students from Sydney Catholic Schools and inspired us to connect with our faith through the presentations and interactions.

Steve Agrisano, a guest musician, performed songs which helped us reflect on our role as Catholics. The engaging speakers shared their experiences on connecting with their faith along with ways to not hold back in “spreading joy”, a phrase reflected in the event’s theme. The Scriptures and prayers helped us to think about ways we can improve ourselves and live out Jesus’ teachings.

A big thank you to Mr Neubronner who supervised us at the event.

Year 9 Camp

It was exciting to see Year 9 students participate in a range of activities in week 9 as part of their Year 9 Camp experience. Students travelled to Stanwell Tops and took part in both challenging and fun activities from the leap of faith, to survivor challenges, to the giant swing, to go-carting, team building activities and night time activities to name a few. Each activity encouraged students to step outside of their comfort zone, and that our Year 9 group did with enthusiasm and bravery.

The students also spent time listening to guest speaker Glen Gerreyn from The Hopefull Institute. Glen challenged students’ thoughts about themselves and their world by looking at the power of purpose, challenging limiting beliefs and becoming unstoppable. This day was full of many take aways about courage and hope.

2022 saw the introduction of the Year 9 Courage Cup. House points were awarded to students when they demonstrated courage. The challenge to take home the cup was welcomed by all of Year 9 with joy and eagerness. A big congratulations to Perroton House our 2022 Year 9 Courage Cup winners.

NSW CCC Netball Championships

Congratulations to the Junior, Intermediate and Open girls who represented MSCW at the NSW CCC Netball Championships on Tuesday 16 August in Penrith. Catholic Schools from all over NSW come to compete in this extremely competitive and tough tournament.

The weather was perfect for Netball and MSCW students made the College proud with some great results on the court throughout the day.

MSCW Tennis

Congratulations to the MSCW Tennis Team for their recent success in the Sydney Catholic Schools Tennis competition from Weeks 3-7 Term 3.

Well done to the Intermediate Tennis Team for their excellent play in their doubles and singles games. They demonstrated great teamwork and skills in their serves and volleys. In the end the intermediate team pulled through bringing home second place.

The Senior Team also played with great power and displayed amazing forehand and backhand shots with topspin. Unfortunately, due to the tough competition their season came to an end, only missing out by a few games in singles and doubles, stopping just short of the semi-finals.

That’s why we’ve created the High School Student Photography Awards! We’re inviting high school students from all over Australia to enter and be recognised for their creativity and originality.

This is an open theme competition, and creativity and originality is highly encouraged. Photographs can be taken on any photographic medium, phone cameras, film cameras, instant cameras, whatever works – if it takes a photo – USE IT!
Entries are open until 31 December 2022. Find out more: https://www.ccp.sa.edu.au/high-school-student-photography-awards
