An historical moment for our College!

Last Friday was a significant moment in the history of our Marist Sisters’ College community. We unveiled and blessed a stunning life-sized bronze sculpture of Jeanne-Marie Chavoin – Our Foundress, affectionately known as the ‘JMC’ sculpture. Jeanne-Marie was the foundress of the Marist sisters, the sisters who originated in France, and who arrived in Australia in 1907 to commence Marist Sisters’ College. It was wonderful to have nine Marist sisters with us on this very special occasion.

Thanks to a very generous bequest from an ex-student of the college, we were able to commission the bronze sculpture. The ex-student was Paula Margaret Williams (nee Johnson) who graduated from the College in 1948. Sadly, Paula passed away on 23 January 2022, 92 years old. Paula’s sister Wendy, also an MSCW graduate, was not able to attend the event due to illness but in my conversations with her she recalls the wonderful time that she and Paula spent here at the College. Wendy said: “Paula went on to become a school teacher who developed a real love of English and writing”. Wendy also mentioned that she still has many Tower magazines from the 1940’s and that she and her sister Paula were part of the group of students who had to relocate to Mittagong during the Second World War. Paula’s very generous bequest acknowledges the profound positive experience that her Marist Sisters’ education provided.

Having a sculpture of Jeanne-Marie Chavoin “JMC” in the playground for students to see and interact with daily is something that I have always dreamt of for our Marist girls. It’s a tangible reminder and acknowledgement of the strong foundations on which we as a community are founded. I want the sculpture to be something that the students interact with…to touch, talk to, acknowledge, and even dress up at significant times. She is not an object we just look at. Instead, JMC is a personality we want fully involved in our College life.

Our sculpture artists, Gillie and Marc were chosen to bring to life our JMC vision due to their interest in our college community and search to know more, their passion as artists, their experience and their many examples of wonderful art all around the world.

Congratulations to our talented and creative Sculpture Working Party who responded to my call to help design the sculpture.

I also share the inscription on the plaque that describes the artistic rationale and meaning behind the design:

This stunning life-sized bronze of Jeanne-Marie Chavoin represents our Marist Tradition – the profound privilege of passing knowledge, values, traditions and stories from one generation to the next.  Our French Foundress, Jeanne-Marie Chavoin, was the embodiment of Marist Sisters’ commitment to the education of young women, depicted here by an open book in her hands, fully engaged in reading to her students. This generous act of dedication signifies the daily opportunities that learning brings to Marist students, opening the gateway to a world of future possibilities, each thriving on meaningful relationships. The gift of reading portrays the transformative power of education, but equally its spiritual connection to those values and traditions which form the foundation of the Marist Sisters’ philosophy, ‘Marist Women of Action”.

The senior student explores the text with curiosity, seeking guidance and wise discernment from Jeanne-Marie. The dynamic connection between them is evident – a common purpose characterised by the shared pursuit of knowledge and joined by the confident arm of Jeanne-Marie. Similarly, the senior, her arm resting reassuringly on her sister’s shoulder, captures a sense of genuine affection and belonging, the younger sister responding with a look of admiration and trust. The three women are gathered around our Marist Compass which symbolises courage, compassion and gifts while effectively expressing the ‘sisterhood’ of our Marist family.

The JMC sculpture is strategically positioned on Futuna Terrace, allowing students the daily opportunity to make a passing “touch” or acknowledge Jeanne-Marie with a ‘nod’ of respect and gratitude. It also becomes a welcome place for inspiration and prayer.

Within the college, Jeanne-Marie stands clearly as a visual reminder of the Marist Sisters’ vision for the education and empowerment of young women. Her welcoming presence invites students and staff to unite and gather regularly, inspiring them to make individual and collective contributions to the college and wider community, thereby developing their unique Marist ‘compass for life’.

Our newly elected 2024/2025 Student Leaders

Last week we announced our newly elected 2024/2025 Student Leaders. This week they have been on a 2-day Leadership Camp to build and form as a team, develop their motivating theme and start preparations for the positive impact they will make.

During our Foundress Day Mass, 3 July, we will invest and present badges to these new student leaders. Student leadership at MSCW is an opportunity for students to action their commitment toward ‘service’. It also represents an opportunity to make significant changes through their daily and weekly contributions, first in our MSCW community, then beyond in local and global communities. It is through their daily and weekly example, they become a voice for all students. This opportunity also equips students with important life skills to utilise and further enhance beyond school.

Welcome to MSCW!

Next week we welcome to our staff Mr Phillip O’Sullivan, Mathematics teacher. We wish Phillip well as he joins our Marist community.

In our Church ……

THE FEAST OF ST. ALOYSIUS GONZAGA, SJ (21 June)

The 21 June is the feast day of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, an Italian Jesuit known for his courage in serving the sick and his dedication to the education of young students.

As a young boy, St. Aloysius always had a great desire to know and serve God, but his family life was not always supportive of this desire. He was born into a noble Italian family, and his father was a compulsive gambler. He grew up in a castle and was trained from a very young age to be a soldier and courtier, and despite the opposition of his family, he taught catechism to poor boys.

He encountered many holy people in his lifetime; he received his first Communion from St. Charles Borromeo and studied under St. Robert Bellarmine. As a teen, he suffered from a kidney disease which he considered a blessing, as it left him with plenty of time for prayer.

At 18 he signed away his legal claim to his title and his family’s lands and entered the Jesuits. He died shortly thereafter of the plague at the age of 23, having devotedly cared for plague victims in Rome in the outbreak of 1591.

He was canonized in 1726 and is the patron saint of youth, AIDS patients and AIDS caregivers.

In our Curriculum ……

Year 9 Religious Education

This week we highlight the fantastic work Year 9 students are applying in their Religious Education classes. Throughout this term, Year 9 students have begun exploring the unit; Sacraments of Healing on 2 John 5;

“But now, dear lady, I ask you, not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning, let us love one another.”

The Sacraments of Healing include the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation and the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.  This unit will address the Scriptural foundations of the Sacraments of Healing, with a focus on Jesus’ acts of healing and inclusion.  Through their investigation of the Sacraments of Healing, students will consider the nature of sin and forgiveness, and healing and suffering in the world, in their community and in their own lives.  Students will come to an understanding of the hope and restoration offered through the Sacraments of Healing. To achieve this, students have been consolidating their knowledge, values and skills through activities such as journaling, creating posters on forgiveness and care studies of suffering.

Thank you to Year 9 for your efforts! Thank you to our teaching team for their continued commitment and dedication to Year 9; Ms. Veronica Barbagallo, Mr. Justin Hodges, Ms. Angela Bowland, Ms. Irena Jajcevic, Ms. Rosario Poli and Ms. Rebecca Bombaci.

ACADEMIC REPORTS AND STAGE 4 & 5 ACADEMIC PROGRESS AWARDS

As we near the end of Semester One, it is essential to reflect upon our students’ achievements and celebrate their hard work, dedication, and learning in Years 7 to 10.  On Wednesday 26 June 2024, reports will be issued to parents and carers via COMPASS at 4pm. The report is an invaluable tool that allows teachers and parents to assess a student’s progress. It overviews their academic performance, highlighting their achievements in various subjects, effort, behaviour, and overall growth.

The Stage 4 & 5 Progress Awards Assembly will take place on Monday, July 1, 2024. It is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate our students’ achievements. There will be two awards nominated by each class teacher for each subject in Years 7 to 10:

ACADEMIC MERIT Awards for consistent and/or improved effort by students. ACADEMIC PROGRESS Awarded for high levels of academic achievement, commitment to learning and consistently strong aspiration during Semester One.

Beyond the symbolic significance of receiving an award, the Stage 4 & 5 Progress Awards Assembly is a powerful motivator for students. It reinforces the value of hard work, determination, and the pursuit of excellence. By publicly recognising student achievements, we encourage them to strive for greatness, set higher goals, and explore their full potential. It is important to remember that the awards are not solely about recognising the top achievers. We also value the progress and growth of each student, acknowledging their individual accomplishments and applauding their personal achievements.

Towards the year’s conclusion, more formal awards assemblies will be held to celebrate academic achievement, to which parents, carers and the broader College community will be invited.

In our Community ……

VINNIES WINTER SLEEPOUT

On Friday, 14th June, a large group of MSCW students participated in our annual Vinnies Winter Sleepout to gain a unique insight into the complex issues that people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage face by “sleeping rough” for one night. Our sleepout centred on St Vincent de Paul’s current case study, the Working Homeless, an emerging group of people who are experiencing housing hardship despite being in employment.

To begin the evening, Brooke Simmons, a volunteer from St Vincent de Paul, spoke to the students about the extensive services and support provided by the organisation and importance of the Winter Sleepout through her own experience. Her testimony served as a reminder of the difficult circumstances many people experience, even within the Hunters Hill area. Then students organised snack and toiletry packs that were donated from the College community for the Vinnies Winter Appeal. These packs will be delivered to Vinnies Van Services in Lewisham and Ryde.

Afterwards students were provided with an extremely simple dinner, enabling them to understand the physical extremities people experiencing homelessness face. Dinner was followed by an activity called the Privilege Walk. Facilitated by the Marists in Action (MIA) group, the aim of this session was for students to reflect on their privilege in contrast to those experiencing hardships.  The night concluded with a TV program called ‘Filthy, Rich and Homeless’ which was about five high-profile Australians who agree to swap their privileged lifestyles for ten days of being homeless in NSW. The program enabled students to gain a deep insight into the complex causes of homelessness and become aware of the huge impact housing can have on peoples’ lives. The Winter Sleepout finished at 7 am on Saturday, 15 June.

Thank you to Samantha Ison, Jen Dove, Laura Marshall, Bonnie Chen, Josh Allen, Angus Bray, Matthew Iskander and Anne Ireland who gave up their warm beds for the whole night or supervised parts of the evening.  A huge thank you to Jenny Vu for organising the Winter Sleepout and the collection and packing of much-needed items for St Vincent de Paul.

St. THERESE COLLABORATIVE NETWORK –
Stage 2 Faith Retreat

On Thursday, 13 June, Year 11 students, Chloe Murray and Lilli Moujalli had the opportunity to accompany Stage 2 students from St. Therese Primary School, Denistone on their Faith Retreat to the Royal Botanical Gardens. In collaboration with Marist College, Eastwood, our students helped to facilitate the day.

It was great to reconnect and interact with students and staff. We travelled to the Royal Botanical Gardens in the city. We then explored the gardens and scenery, seeing many different types of flora and fauna. We sat and reflected on the land and scenery around us and how it was important to our faith, as God created the world. These concepts are important when learning about being a Catholic, as we can understand how the world came to be. We then made our way down to the Opera House for lunch where we enjoyed the views. It was a beautiful day and was great to see how students got involved in conversations. The experience was important in understanding the interpretations of younger generations and the continuation and understanding of the Catholic faith.

  • Chloe Murray, Year 11

Mr. Justin Salar, Religious Education Coordinator at St. Therese, Denistone commended Lilli and Chloe for their service;

“Both students were fully engaged and participated very well. They were great role models and responded well to our Stage 2 students. They contributed towards a successful faith formation experience for our Stage 2 students.”

Student Leadership Formation Retreat

On Tuesday and Wednesday of Week 8, our newly elected 2024-2025 Student Leadership Team came together for the Student Leadership Formation Retreat at the Collaroy Centre in Collaroy.

Surrounded by picturesque landscapes the team participated in activities that enhanced their understanding of leadership and began planning for action over the year to come. The group drew upon the teachings from the book “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” by Charlie Mackesy, a gift from Dr Ireland, and our strong Marist foundations of Mary and the College’s compass for Life.

The group then went into planning mode and created their theme for the year. This theme will underpin and provide purpose to every action and initiative over the coming year and will be revealed to the College Community in Term 3. The student leaders then broke into portfolio groups to start planning to bring their theme to life.

We are very much looking forward to officially welcoming the leaders into their roles on Foundress Day and their leadership over the coming year.

Gifted and Talented Report

Our Talented Artists!

On Tuesday afternoon MSCW ran an art enrichment workshop. Students in Years 7- 10 were selected by the art teachers and given the opportunity to work with mural artist Danny Mulyono. He introduced his amazing work to the students and students were introduced to new mediums- charcoal and paint. Whilst nervous at first, the students were inspired by watching Danny and produced incredible small pieces of work. When students removed the fear, they were able to see what was possible. My thanks to the art teachers for their time and support of this initiative and my congratulations to the students for embracing this unique opportunity.

Talk Money Workshop

This term, Year 8.1 and 8.4 students participated in two engaging ‘Talk Money’ workshops facilitated by the Ecstra Foundation, where they acquired essential skills for building financial independence. In Workshop A, students engaged in discussions about saving, spending, and various payment options. They learned how to align their spending choices with their goals, values, and beliefs, emphasising the importance of thoughtful financial decision-making. In Workshop B, students explored different approaches to making money, understanding employee rights, and navigating difficult conversations at work. Students gained valuable insights into their work rights and learned strategies for effectively entering the workforce.

Through these interactive workshops, students recognised the significance of managing and saving money for their future, as well as the importance of knowing their work rights when starting paid employment for the first time.

Arithmetic Olympics

The Mathematics Department at our school recently hosted an exhilarating event that had numbers flying and minds racing—the Arithmetic Olympics! This term, Year 7 and 8 students eagerly participated, with each class sending forth their finest arithmetic talents to compete.

Academic Dance

Year 10 Dance Industry Day

I’m excited to share the highlights of the Year 10 Dance Industry Incursion that took place on Wednesday of Week 7.

Students were thrilled to have renowned guest artist Millie Slennett with us. With her experience at Broadway Dance Center NYC and LOcREaDO Dance Company, Millie conducted an inspiring commercial dance workshop and Q&A on what it is like to work in the Dance Industry. It was a unique opportunity for our students to learn from one of the industry’s best, enhancing their technical and performance skills.

After the workshop, students participated in a professional portfolio photoshoot. As part of their Commercial Dance unit learning tasks, students are required to present a professional portfolio, show reel, and take part in a mock audition. This photoshoot was a valuable step in capturing each student’s unique presence as a dancer.

I’m so proud of our Year 10 students for embracing this enriching experience.

Congratulations to our Mixed Touch Football team, where Marist Sisters’ and Holy Cross teamed up again for another fine instalment. The team remained undefeated and made it to the Grand Final, where they fell short by 1 try under controversial circumstances. Despite the bitter pill to swallow, it is another amazing achievement to have been in the final or won the competition for 6 of the past 7 years.
Thank you to our brother school, Holy Cross, for making the day another memorable occasion. Being State Grand Finalists is something to be very proud of!

Canteen News

Change to Flexischools

Due to the increase of online orders, the cut off time will now be 8:00 am!

Please order as soon as you are able to.

Flexischools is the system for students to order lunch online and to purchase over the counter in the Canteen. If you are new to this system we would encourage you to set up a Flexischools account. (Link: flexischools.com.au). The Canteen is a very busy area at lunchtime, so ordering online is the best option to ensure your daughter’s order is ready at the start of lunch and avoids any delays in purchasing over the counter.

Please note Friday is always a busy with online orders, please order early on Fridays to hopefully minimise issues you may experience. If you do have a problem please contact the Flexischool parent helpline Monday – Friday 7.00 am – Midday on 1300 361 769.

Students please see canteen staff for any assistance.

Calling on volunteers

The MSCW Canteen would love to welcome new and existing parents to help out. Any day and time you can spare or offer would be greatly appreciated by all, especially at recess and lunchtime with the pickup of lunches and service. If you are able to assist, please contact the Canteen via SMS on 0457 593 920.
