Advent: the journey has begun.

Last weekend, at Parish Masses and as a College community within our global Catholic community, we began our Advent journey. You will observe that the colour purple appears in church ceremonies signifying a time of change. This change begins a new year in the Churches’ liturgical calendar and is one of the key Church seasons. It is an exciting church season as it prepares us all to celebrate the birth of Christ. It’s also a reminder for us to take out our family Nativity scenes….and invite the spirit of Christmas into our homes.

I share with you the thoughts of Fr Kevin Bates who speaks about the meaning of the change God calls us to reflect upon in Advent:

Advent is with us once again and with it comes the call of John the Baptist to re-gather our energies, re-focus our plans, re-visit our hearts, re-engage with the wonderful story of salvation revealed to us in Jesus. The colour purple/violet appears in the Churches as a reminder that we are in a time of change, transition, that something is afoot here. There is a certain restlessness in the readings of the Advent. There is also a certain hope that things can at last change. There is a conviction that God is not done with us yet and that our conversion to the gospel is still possible.

In Australia, we are preparing to down tools for the summer holidays and to rest up a bit. This sudden burst of energy that emerges in the Liturgy, is a bit of a jolt that we may struggle to hear and heed. Having said that, we can also say that holidays are a good and appropriate time to reassess our lives and to take a good look at the things we might change in ourselves and among ourselves. When we are in a relaxed mode and not under the normal stresses of the year, we have the opportunity to listen a bit more attentively and to reflect a bit more deeply. The holidays can be an excellent time to enter again the story of salvation to see where we might next journey. Unlike the goldfish, and unlike those traditions whose worship involves a circle of life in which repetition is enough to fulfil one’s religious duties, we are called by God as each new season rolls around, to enter life’s mysteries more deeply, to live more lovingly, to forgive more whole-heartedly and to speak the truth more clearly.

The colour purple is a deep colour, indicating that the conversion in which we are engaged is something profound and powerful. Things really are shifting. We are indeed changing and embracing the call of John the Baptist to straighten out a few crooked roads, flatten a few hills, liberate the imprisoned bits of our inner and outer world and all the while we rejoice. We rejoice, because this is not change for change’s sake. This is all about seeking out and embracing a new way of being that is born of love and that finds its truest expression in love. It’s our chance to believe again that love can indeed be the energy that shapes all our decisions, all our relationships, all our hopes.  Preparing the way of the Lord is well within the reach of each of us. It’s what we are made for. It’s the project that will bring us the fullest imaginable joy and peace as God’s Word becomes born again in our time and through the quality of our love.

A purple ribbon, poster or decoration of some kind in our homes might provide a reminder through this Advent that we are readying ourselves for something wonderful to emerge in our midst. Happy Advent everyone.

Our College Musical 2023 – Frozen Jnr

Since the announcement at the recent Principal’s Assembly of our College Musical for 2023, FROZEN JNR, there has been a buzz of excitement in the air. Frozen Jnr is an enchanting modern classic from Disney which brings Elsa, Anna and the magical land of Arendelle to life. It reflects our Marist Compass through the story of love and acceptance between sisters. When faced with danger, the two discover their hidden potential and powerful bond. Thanks to our Performing Arts staff who have begun rehearsals. It is wonderful to see such a high degree of interest and passion among the girls while sharing their talents. Opportunities will be available both onstage and behind the scenes. We look forward to the show onstage in July next year.

MSCW Showcase of talents

Over the last few weeks of the year, there has been opportunities for our students to take the lead and share their talents through presentation and performance. The performance night last Wednesday evening highlighted an outstanding standard, proficiency and array of instruments and voice. These opportunities will be showcased later in the Newsletter. A further highlight has been the chance to have parents back onsite to share these experiences. Next week, we look forward to students showcasing their talents in areas of Performing Arts, TAS, Creative Arts and our Newman Gifted and Talented Program.

MSCW Representative Stars!

Congratulations to Mia Rodgers who received a Blue Award for Touch Football and Milly Puckeridge for Diving at the NSW Combined Catholic College Awards night.

The NSW CCC Awards recognise outstanding Sporting achievements and is the highest accolade a student can receive from NSW Combined Catholic Colleges.

Milly placed 2nd at the NSWCCC Diving Championships after competing remotely due to being interstate at the Olympic diving trials. She also placed 1st in the NSW All Schools 17 – 19 Years Girls Platform event.

Mia has been a long serving member of NSWCCC Touch Football. She was a member of the NSWCCC and NSW All Schools 15’s team and was Captain of the NSWCCC Open Team in 2022. Mia represented NSW U/20’s at State of Origin Touch this year and is a member of the Australian Youth Touch Squad. This year she was named the “Most Valuable Player” at the National Youth Championships while representing NSWCCC.

Both students are credit to the College and their families and I wish them all the best for their future endeavours involving Touch Football and Diving.

From the Religious Education Coordinator

From the Religious Education Coordinator

Advent is a time of waiting. As Christians we are waiting to celebrate the great joy and life that is the birth of the child Jesus at Christmas. Throughout the year we have faced the challenges of flood and fire, lived with the continued threats to our health and watched the impact of war and violence  in our world.

During these times, we reached to others. We were present with and for them. We generously helped in whatever ways we could.

The story of the birth of the child Jesus is one of the extraordinary gift of being present. God becomes one with us. “For God so loved the world that he dwelt ang us.” John 3:16

As we continue our journey through Advent and the last weeks of the school year, let us continue to be present for each other through our actions and words.

In this edition of SchoolTV – FRIENDSHIP & BELONGING

Learning how to make new friends and keep them involves a number of skills every young person needs to understand and develop. For some these skills will come very naturally, allowing them to easily move between different friendship groups, sharing their experiences and opening up to new people. For others, this can be much harder to navigate. Belonging to a group that is like-minded with similar interests is highly beneficial to a young person’s wellbeing. It gives them a sense of security helping them feel valued which in turn builds their confidence. Positive friendships are an important part of the journey to adulthood. Adult carers can support their child or teenager by providing guidance in the many social and emotional skills required for a healthy relationship. This will help them to obtain, retain and maintain friendships. However, not all friendships are regarded as positive. Sometimes young people develop negative or toxic friendships. Therefore it is also important for them to learn how to identify, avoid or deal with such a friendship. In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers can learn how to support their young person’s friendship so that they experience a sense of belonging.

Marist Student Leadership Gathering

On Sunday 20 November, College Co-Captains, Ava Gibson, Social Justice Captains, Isabelle Mourani, Katelyn Lopez and myself, were selected to attend the Marist Student Leadership Gathering (SLG). This was a two-night retreat at The Hermitage in Mittagong. Leaders from all Marist secondary schools in NSW and ACT gathered together, to learn more about our Marist faith and solidarity, discover our personal leadership styles and forge many new connections with like-minded people.

Throughout our time at the SLG we participated in various forms of prayer, including Taizè, Lectio Devina and Dadirri. We also learnt more about the leadership styles of Mary, Jesus and St Marcellin Champagnat, and how we can imitate these styles and implement them into our own lives.  Bec Bromhead, CEO of Australian Marist Solidarity, told us of ways we can get involved in programs that help the disadvantaged in countries such as Cambodia and Bangladesh.

On Monday night, Dr Ireland joined us for mass and dinner, where we presented our initiatives for Australian Marist Solidarity and shared many laughs and stories from the retreat experience.

The highlight of the SLG was the ‘Amazing Grace’ competition, similar to the Amazing Race. We also enjoyed the Trivia Night and Talent Show, where many ‘special talents’ were showcased, including the MSCW leaders singing our favourite prayer, the Salve Regina.

The SLG was a life changing experience, as it opened our eyes to many new perspectives and outlooks on our Marist tradition, leadership and connections with other Marist schools and with each other. We all made many special friendships and memories that we will hold close to our hearts.

Year 7 Poetry

This week year 7 has been exploring the work of Chilean poet-diplomat, politician winner of the 1971 Nobel Prize in Literature, Pablo Neruda. In class the students have been examining key works such as ‘If You Forget Me’, Ode to Tomatoes’ and ‘Ode to My Socks’

We delved deeper into the conventions of his work and explored his ability to express deep passion through sensual language and find vibrant life and majesty in mundane everyday items like tomatoes.

Year 7 then took what they had learned and applied it to their own creative piece of poetry. Constructing a passionate ode to an everyday household object of their choosing. Below are some examples of their efforts.

Ode to a Whiteboard Marker

A simple black pen,

What is so special?

Education, teaching, learning,

One single pen, has so much potential

The inky blackness squeaks when applied to the board,

Some students are tired, their knowledge needs to be restored.

Why is learning so awfully boring?

We don’t want to learn so early in the morning.

Give it a chance, I promise you will like it,

Don’t worry about that assignment you have to submit,

Get out of your chair,

Walk to the front,

Open the pen,

And write what you want.

Sophie Murphy, Year 7 Student

ODE TO A HAIR TIE

Oh hair tie,

How joyful you are

You alone are bizarre

My hair will now be secure

Usefulness you can assure

You’re elastic and stretchy

Never at all sketchy

Perfect for on-the-go hairstyles

Forever versatile

Adaptable and colourful

Tying hair is now wonderful

Naydine Seow, Year 7 Student

ODE TO APPLES

You are constantly new, unlike anyone or anything.

You have always been on the verge of falling from paradise: full and lovely sunrise cheek!

The earth’s produce, such as bunchy grapes, muted mangos, skeletal plums, and sunken figs, is so odd in comparison to you.

You are the cheese of all the flowers, fragrant bread, and clean balm.

We all temporarily regress to the state of the baby when we bite into your round innocence because we still have some apple inside of us.

Marie Karkour, Year 7 Student

ODE TO A MANGO

Your juicy flesh

So soft

And tender

Your skin is like a treasure box

Hiding the

Juicy tender flesh that treasures look for

Your flesh taste like

Golden flakes

Good enough to be in

A treasure box

Amelia Marteau, Year 7 Student

Year 9 Reflection Day

Year 9 Reflection Day

They reflected on how they could be called to respond and say ‘yes’ to other acts of service within their community. Students had the opportunity to listen to Ms Vu’s testimony about her pilgrimages from World Youth Day and Ms Clarke’s stories on the Cambodia Immersion and Marist Sony Camp. The day consisted of fun icebreakers, small group discussions, a liturgy and packing toiletry bags for St Vincent de Paul in preparation for Christmas.

Below are some of the highlights from students:

“Hearing the stories about the less fortunate made me think of how lucky we are.”

“I became more aware of the power of saying ‘yes’.”

“I learnt about how I can involve myself more in my community through activities and programs that MSCW and other schools offer.”

“Packing the bags for Vinnies made me empathise more with the less fortunate. I feel grateful for what I have.”

A huge thank you to Rosario Poli, Veronica Barbagallo, Galen Neubronner, Matthew Iskander, Te’Annie Makdessi and Leonie Clarke for assisting and facilitating the activities throughout the day.

Year 9 History Incursion

Last week, Year 9 got to experience a captivating performance from Mr Glenn Phillips, of Troubie. Glenn took the students back to a post-World War I Australian hospital. The performance gave students an opportunity to understand the horrors of the Great War and the mental and physical effect it had on Australian troops. Throughout the performance, students saw representations of ‘Shell Shock’ (what we now call Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), as well as a strong focus on the role Australian women played in the War. The passionate performance allowed students to sympathise with history and unpack a section of our past that is seldom explored.

Newman Classes 2023

At Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich, the process of constructing classes is a lengthy one involving evaluation of various data points. As you can appreciate, it is essential that as professionals we engage in rich and genuine discussion around the structure and composition of all classes to best meet the learning needs of our students.

Communication is essential in this process, therefore any movement between classes will be communicated to the students and parents.

A reminder that students in mixed ability classes still have the opportunity to complete the extension assessment tasks. Flexible groupings and differentiated classwork are also ways of extending students in mixed ability classes.

Sports News

During the first seven weeks of Term 3 on a Thursday, MSCW competed in the SCS AFL competition. The Junior, intermediate and Senior teams demonstrated outstanding skill and commitment against tough competition from Domremy, Holy Spirit, Brigidine and St Ursula’s at Meadowbank Park.

All three teams were extremely successful winning throughout the season with some close losses too. The Intermediates team won their final against Brigidine 42-18 while the Juniors unfortunately lost against Marist College North Shore 22-34. The Senior team competed each at Maroubra against Brigidine, Our Lady of Sacred Heart, Bethlehem and St Clares. The Senior team faced tougher competition during their season and unfortunately lost their final against Brigidine Catholic College 8-45.

Awesome effort!
