Congratulations to Fr Brian Wilson

Today Fr Brian, Parish Priest of Holy Name of Mary Hunters Hill, celebrates his Golden Jubilee for 50 years in the priesthood. A wonderful achievement of service and ministry to many here in Australia and overseas. Special thanks to Fr Brian for his support and care of our Marist community this year.

Foundress’ Feast Day celebration and presentation of new Student Leaders 2022/2023

On Wednesday 29 June, we will celebrate our College Feast Day, the Feast Day of Jeanne–Marie Chavoin, Foundress of the Marist Sisters. On this significant and special day, we will begin with Eucharist as a community at St Mary’s Cathedral followed by House activities.

During the Mass, we will invest and present badges to our new student leaders who will be announced next week. At Marist Sisters’ College, our model of leadership is seen through the values and life that Jesus lived. Jesus, as a young man, showed us leadership by service, which often means sacrifice, although it is always accompanied by other less tangible rewards.

As Marists, Mary too is our role model, and she showed us that through the love of her son, this servant leadership means that when we see a need, we must be of service and help to others.

Additionally, Jeanne-Marie was inspired by this example and with confidence, tenacity and determination founded a religious order, the Marist Sisters’, to be of service in the ‘way of Mary’. By thinking, judging, feeling and acting as Mary did, Jeanne-Marie has provided the opportunity for us as a Marist family to live responsibility and nurture an obligation to reach out in service to others.

Academic Progress Awards

At the end of the term on 28 June, we will acknowledge our students’ hard work through Progress and Merit Awards at the Stage 4 and 5 Academic Assemblies. Students can receive an award for progress in a course so far, or improvement/consistent application in their studies. More formal assemblies that recognise academic, cultural, sporting and personal efforts will be held at the end of the year. At this formal assembly in December, we look forward to the presence of all parents.

A full list of recipients will be included in the final Newsletter of the term.

I look forward to presenting certificates to the students. For many, it represents the achievement of some of their 2022 goals.

Parent/Teacher interviews

This term concludes with Year 7-10 Parent/Teacher interviews via Zoom on Thursday, 30 June and Friday, 1 July. I request that parents take this vital opportunity to book appointments to discuss their daughter’s progress with each of her teachers. Students will prepare for these interviews by completing their own reflection on their progress and will lead the conversation with parents and their teacher.

Your presence and interest in your daughter’s commitment to her academic work supports the research that parent engagement is one of the key factors behind ongoing student success, achievement and wellbeing.

From the Assistant Principal

From the Assistant Principal

Thank you to the large number of parents who have responded to the ‘Tell Them From Me’ survey that was issued recently. This is a significant opportunity for our parent community to provide the College with constructive annual feedback and it continues to help inform the College’s strategic plans. Students have also had the opportunity to provide feedback to the College via a similar process. Once again, this important feedback is discussed and is taken into consideration when the College develops its new plans for the future.

If you are yet to have completed the survey, there is an opportunity to still do so as the survey closes Friday 17 June.

Feeling unwell at school

With the winter season approaching, it is important that students are following the College process if they are feeling unwell. If a student is feeling unwell at school, they are to:

  • Seek permission from their classroom teacher to attend the Student Administration Office.
  • The staff in the office will then make contact with parents to come and collect their daughter.

Students should not be texting, calling or making arrangements for collection from the College with their parents prior to presenting to sick bay.

Unfortunately there have been a number of students who have not followed the above process, and parents are arriving at the College to collect their daughter/s before they are presenting to sick bay and prior to contact being made by office staff. I ask for parents support on enforcing this process with you daughter/s.

College winter uniform

COMPASS Student ID Card

It is a College expectation that all students have their COMPASS Student ID Card with them every day. The card is used in particular for students to tap in and out of the College for late arrival or early departure. I ask for the support of parents in ensuring that your daughter/s have this with them everyday. If students have misplaced or lost their Student ID Card it is a requirement that the card is replaced. Please see below for how to order a new card online.

School buses

It is imperative that students at the College are using their OPAL Cards when using buses to travel to and from school. Current statistics of bus usage by students are not representative of the numbers of students relying on buses for transport to and from school and there is a significant shortfall in the statistics.

The statistics that are gathered do have a significant impact on the number of bus services that are provided to the College and we need to be sure that students are using the OPAL Cards if we are to maintain the number of bus services allocated to the College at this stage and to increase the number.

I ask all parents and carers to talk with their daughters about this important issue. Should you have any concerns related to the travel of your daughters on the buses, I welcome the feedback. Added to this, I ask that you, too, contact the Bus Depot as well to raise your concerns with them.

COVID update

Can household contacts return to school?

Students who are close contacts and have no symptoms may to continue to attend school if they follow guidelines agreed with NSW Health.

Close/household contacts attending school will need to adhere to the following in addition to the NSW Health guidelines:

  • You must notify the school if they are intending to return under this provision mscw-attendance@syd.catholic.edu.au.
  • Conduct a daily RAT and return a negative result each morning before attending school for five (5) school days.
  • Must wear a mask indoors except when eating or exercising.
  • No student identified as a close contact will be permitted to participate in overnight excursions, including school camps.

If your daughter is a COVID positive they are not to return to school until they have completed their full seven (7) days isolation. The medical clearance letter received from NSW Health when a case is reported via the Service NSW App or if the PCR test is positive, indicates the isolation period dates. Students can return the day after the end date for the isolation period and no sooner as long as they are nor presenting with symptoms.

Please send through medical clearance letter received from NSW Health to mscw-attendance@syd.catholic.edu.au

Travelling to and from school – Masks

I ask for your support as a parent/carer in ensuring that your daughter/s are wearing masks on public transport, which includes the bus and ferry. Please see the below communication for the School Liaison Police Officer for the Ryde Area, which was sent to all schools in the area:

The current Public Health Orders regarding face coverings for students aged 12 years and older are required to adhere to this legislation

COVID-19 MANDATORY FACE COVERINGS

Public Health Act 2010

The Public Health (COVID-19 Mandatory Face Coverings) Order 2021 was amended commencing 29 January 2021.

A fitted face covering is a mask or other covering that fits securely around the face and is designed or made to be worn over the nose and mouth to provide the wearer with protection against infection. A scarf is not a fitted face covering.

Requirement to wear a fitted face covering

Public transport

A person in Greater Sydney must wear a fitted face covering at all times when:

(a) at a public transport waiting area, or

(b) when the person is in a vehicle, train or vessel that is being used to provide a public transport service and the vehicle, train or vessel is carrying passengers or is in service and available to carry passengers.

Public transport service includes a taxi service, rideshare service and community transport service. A public transport waiting area is a station, including the platform of a passenger railway station or light rail station/stop, a ferry wharf, a bus stop or taxi rank.

From the Religious Education Coordinator

From the Religious Education Coordinator

This Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ with the Gospel being Luke’s account of Jesus feeding the five thousand.(9:11-17). Over the years there have been attempts to explain what really happened at this event. Any attempt to explain away the miracle of the loaves and the fishes completely misses the point of the story. Jesus miraculously makes it possible for the Twelve to feed all those present, so much so that there were basketfuls left over. At its core is the miraculous abundance that God provides for all through Jesus.

Pope Francis said in his reflection on the miracle story that ‘thanks to that small freely-given and therefore heroic gift, Jesus is able to feed everyone. This is a great lesson for us. It tells us that the Lord can do a lot with the little that we put at His disposal.’ He then went on to ask the question ‘What do I bring to Jesus today?’ and continued God ‘can do a lot with one of our prayers, with a gesture of charity for others, even with one of our sufferings handed over to His mercy.’ Let us remember that God is present in our everyday lives.

Attendance matters

Below is a snapshot of the impact an individual’s attendance has on their learning.

What to do if your daughter is refusing to go to school

Inform her Tutor Teacher or House Coordinator

As soon as it becomes challenging to get your daughter to school, make contact with her Tutor Teacher or House Coordinator.

Why?

The sooner your daughter is re-engaged with school the better the outcome. Studies have shown that the longer a student stays away from school the more challenging it is for them to return and reconnect socially and with their learning. The College has the ability to put in place measures to support her return to school and these are co-created between the family and the House Coordinator.

Dr Justin Coulson published an article this week that outlines things that an individual may be doing that indicate they are engaging in school refusal:

  • Verbal refusal
  • Emotional outbursts when being prompted to prepare for school
  • Complete unwillingness to dress for school, pack lunch or a schoolbag, or leave the house
  • Tantrums
  • Panic attacks
  • Emotional explosions
  • Aggression
  • Tears, and more.

The article also includes 7 School Refusal Solutions. Access the article using this link: Happy Families – Dr Justin Coulson.

Subject selection

During Community Time, Year 10 students participated in subject inquiry talks this week. This allowed students to hear from our Key Learning Area Coordinators about details of subjects offered in Years 11 and 12. Students had the opportunity to ask questions to make informed choices for their pattern of study to achieve their HSC credential. I congratulate the students on their engagement and sense of maturity.

Next week, Year 8 students engage in a similar process as they choose two elective subjects for their Stage 5 studies. Later in the year, Year 7 students will participate in a language taster day to allow them to choose from French, Italian or Spanish in Year 8 next year.

Parent/Student/Teacher conferences

As mentioned by Dr Ireland, Parent/Student/Teacher conferences are on Thursday, 30 June and Friday, 1 July. A reminder that bookings can now be made for these important conferences for Years 7 to 10. Semester One reports will be published on COMPASS on Friday, 24 June.

Gifted and Talented Report

Mathematics and Year 9 gifted students: Inquisitive Minds

The Newman Year 9 5.3 class attended an excursion last Friday at Cerdon College, Merrylands called ‘Inquisitive Minds’. On this day they completed a wide range of mathematical puzzles and activities.

Highlights on the day:

  • 1st round of tasks: Sienna Gatt and Jasmine Comerford placed 3rd
  • 2nd round of tasks: Jasmine Comerford and her partner placed 1st, Zali Iannello and her partner placed 5th
  • Group task (bridge building): The students split into two groups, one group placed 1st creating a bridge spanning 67cm and the second group placed 2nd creating a bridge spanning 52cm.

Friday 10 June, was a day full of fun and adventure for the Year 9 Mathematics class from Marist Sisters College Woolwich. This day was an amazing opportunity for us to explore and extend our mathematical talents, critical thinking expertise and teamwork skills. All students were to compete as individuals and in teams. We all had a lot of fun throughout the day. We had the chance to meet many new individuals from five other high schools, learning about each of their own unique gifts and abilities. This event was held at Cerdon College in Merrylands. We were pushed past our own mathematical skills and were challenged to think outside the box. There were a variety of activities presented throughout the day, continuously stimulating our growing minds. It was a time to acknowledge, recognise and appreciate what we could all bring to the table collectively as we move into our Senior years. The day was an amazing experience for all of us as Year 9 students, topped off with our group win for one of the last activities.”

MSCW Winter Sleepout

More than 90 students participated in the MSCW Winter Sleepout on Friday, 3 June. The purpose of this overnight stay in Bon Repos was to provide a glimpse into the realities of homelessness by ‘sleeping rough’ and to raise awareness and funds for the Vinnies Winter Appeal.

There were guest speakers, Jennifer Aduckiewicz and Cathy Langman, who worked as volunteers for Vinnies. They spoke about the services offered to residents living in public housing in Hunters Hill and how there are over 116,000 people experiencing homelessness in Australia.

Students participated in a range of activities facilitated by the Marists in Action (MIA) group. This included the Privilege Walk activity, which enabled them to reflect on their privilege in contrast to those experiencing hardships. Dinner was a cup of soup and a bread roll. There were several rounds of trivia and singing throughout the night.

The Winter Sleepout was an opportunity for students to connect and develop empathy for those who are disadvantaged in our society.

Thank you to the staff who supported and supervised the sleepout – Mrs Criss, Ms Shippen, Mr Iskander, Mr Leonard, Ms Khean, Ms Andrews, Mr Bray, Ms Dove, Mr Allen and Miss Kleist.

NSW All School Mixed Touch Challenge

Six MSCW students – Mia Rodgers, Mackenzee Southcombe, Tatum Kelly, Giselle Kusto, Sienna Wheelhouse and Brianna Kelly – combined with six Holy Cross students to participate in the NSW All School Mixed Touch Challenge on Thursday, 2 June.

The carnival took place in Waterworth Park Earlwood and consisted of five rounds, which the team successfully completed after winning all five games.

The mixed team had a great run in their quarter-final against Narara Valley, progressing through to the semi-finals with a comfortable win of 8-3.

In the semi-finals, the mixed team came up against Mater Maria with another successful game, winning 4-1. This meant that the Marist Sisters’ and Holy Cross mixed team had secured their position in the grand-final.

Held in the grandstand of Waterworth Park, the Marist Sisters’ and Holy Cross team had a big game ahead of them to defend their 2021 Champion title against the Balgowlah and Mackellar mixed team. The grand final was a very intense and tight game with the score being even or a one try difference. Unfortunately, towards the end of the game, the Balgowlah and Mackellar mixed team managed to score one last try that put them in a winning position. As the final buzzer went, the final score was 4-3, resulting in the MSCW and Holy Cross team placing second overall in the competition.

Overall, a huge congratulations to all the players and their efforts! Also, a massive thank you to the NSW All School committee for their thorough organisation with referees, which further provided the opportunity for all these students.
