2022 Year 12 HSC results released

Congratulations to our 2022 HSC class of graduates. Yesterday their HSC and ATAR results were released. It is immensely pleasing to see their persistent hard work and energetic commitment rewarded so richly, especially following the challenges of the past couple of years. Our 2022 Graduates have earned themselves an excellent reputation for rising to meet external challenges and community needs so capably and generously. While we already know that approximately 80% of our girls are heading to University and 15% are pursuing a Vocational career, we are delighted for the girls’ collective success. They should feel very satisfied and fulfilled by these outstanding HSC results. Congratulations!

The HSC highlights at this time are:

Stage 4 & 5 Awards Assemblies

Congratulations to all the students who were acknowledged this week for their success in academic subjects and co-curricular through receiving Academic Excellence or Merit Certificates or special College awards.

As Principal, it is extremely satisfying to present these awards to students who apply themselves consistently to their studies and give that extra effort and time to others, thereby embodying the Marist spirit. A full list of award recipients is included in this newsletter.

The highlight of each of the Award Ceremonies is our Marian Award. The Marian Award is awarded to a student in each year group for their commitment to living in the way of Mary”. This has been witnessed by many staff, each noting how the girls have been living each day with a joy and thankfulness for all that she has been given; who commits to prayerfulness; who shows steadfastness in faith; and who has committed to the service of God and others.

Congratulations to the 2022 recipients:

I congratulate Year 11 who prepared the other Year levels, demonstrating both their leadership and their persuasive ability to set House goals in preparation for a successful GALA DAY. It was a grand community example of ‘Evolve, Endeavour & Exceed”.

Gratitude for the 2022 year

As College Principal, it is with much pride and gratitude that I acknowledge our student achievements and consistent application throughout this 2022 year. I especially thank all those who have contributed to our vibrant MSCW community. The college Staff and I share an uplifting pride in the way our girls have conducted themselves at the college and in public. To publish the many positive accolades received by members of the public throughout the year, would extend this newsletter considerably!!

Through another very demanding…sometimes challenging year, our Marist values of ‘Sisters, Courage, Gift and Empower’ were very evident in rising to meet the unanticipated challenges of 2022. I especially thank our very dedicated and gifted staff, both Teaching and Support, for their daily enthusiasm, commitment and passion for the education and wellbeing of our Marist girls. Each week I have seen them lift others to new levels …sometimes even carry others. Without them, the wonderful opportunities provided for our students would not be possible. I also acknowledge the following staff who are leaving MSCW and thank them for their contributions to the College:

Teaching staff

Religious Education Coordinator, Mary Kleist

Mary Kleist has been a valued member of the Leadership Team as Religious Education Coordinator (REC) for the past 7 years. During that time, Mary has been instrumental in leading and implementing the strategic directions of MSCW faith formation and religious education. As REC, Mary has been charged with the responsibility of developing our new college Faith Formation Framework. In addition, Mary has overseen and attended the various student Retreat programs, prepared meaningful Liturgies for Year groups and Patron Feast Days, and generously given her time to assist with our community Charities program.

Of course, we also recognize other colleagues who have given significant service to the College through their roles as permanent staff members: Fionna Andersen, Adelina Boray, Kate Gibson, Sera Pollari, Steve Saliba, and Anne Wallace.

Also, I extend my sincere gratitude to both teaching and support staff, who have been with us on a short-term contracts as well as staff who have completed casual blocks: Andres Basso, Lillian Fletcher, Jessica Magee, Galen Neubronner, Shannon Graham, Loretta Muratore, Angelique Ockert and Evelyn Proimos.

I would also like to wish those staff who are taking 12 months leave in 2022, a time of relaxation and renewal: Deborah Kellert, Laura Peacock and Ellie Phillips.

At this close of academic and co-curricular school year, I especially want to acknowledge our thoughtful students who constantly give of themselves to build our College community. As confident young women they have helped develop their Marist Compass through their love of learning and contribution to the wider community through Marist service, social justice activities, sport, creative arts and more. This year, it has been uplifting to see our students resume more active involvement, showcasing their gifts and talents through learning and performance as COVID regulations have eased.

As the year closes, I thank Fr Brian Wilson sm, Fr Aliki Langi sm, Fr Greg Morgan and the Parish Priests of our feeder schools, for their support and care over the year and the time they commit to supporting the faith life of the students and staff. Their readiness to join our college community on special church feasts and events has been mush appreciated.

To our parents, Thank you’ for your consistent support and trust. I certainly enjoyed our weekly zoom meetings as an effective way to communicate, gather feedback and hear your thoughts on key issues while COVID regulations were in place. Two of the positives in this process was the higher participation by all parents and especially more Dads. It has been wonderful to see you back on-site for our showcase evenings, Parent Engagement meetings, Information Nights and Social Nights. I especially say thank you for your emails of support and gratitude as we navigated the year.

To our wonderful staff, thank you for your proven flexibility to continue to navigate a changing educational environment. Returning to face-to-face learning this year was certainly one of the highlights of the year after having to balance remote learning. Through all of this, the teaching and support staff have been committed to our Marist girls and families to ensure their learning and wellbeing needs have been well supported.

And finally, as we journey through the Advent season and prepare our homes for the coming of Jesus, I wish every student, staff member and family at Marist Sisters’ College the blessings of Christmas and look forward to a successful and rewarding 2023. May your family enjoy any planned gatherings and remain safe throughout the vacation period. I’m looking forward to doing the same with family, armed with a selection of good books in between.

From the Assistant Principal

From the Assistant Principal

As we come to the end of the school year for 2022 I would like to acknowledge the many accomplishments that we have achieved as a community this year. As a community we have continued to thrive.

This week we acknowledged the cultural, academic and sporting successes of our Years 7-10 students in a series of Stage Assemblies. It was an honour to watch the students proudly accept their awards and be recognised not only for their curriculum achievements but also for their generosity as we also recognised students who have made significant contributions to the life of our College over the course of the year.

The term ended with a spectacular Gala Day, which truly was a community day of celebration showcasing our many and varied gifts and talents. I wish to congratulate all of our girls for getting involved and working together to create such spectacular performances.

I wish you and your loved ones a blessed Christmas and a restful and peaceful break over the coming days and weeks.

From the Religious Education Coordinator

From the Religious Education Coordinator

As we come to the end of the school year, we have much to give thanks and to celebrate. This year has been one of many challenges: fire, floods, storms, pandemic, isolation, uncertainty and the unknown.  We also acknowledge the successes: the building of relationships and our learnings throughout the year. In the midst of all our challenges and successes has been God.Each year, we learn to appreciate family, friends and relationships. Father Paul Sullivan sm in a Marist Mission Centre newsletter said “I believe that our desire to care for those we love will ultimately shape who we are and what we do. The story of a baby born in a stable in Bethlehem is the gift of God’s care and compassion for us and our world. Jesus identifies with us by accepting our humanity and vulnerability. We are sharers in his life and mission.”May you celebrate ‘the gift of each other” this Christmas and for the years to come.Thank you for your support during my time as the Religious Education Coordinator at Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich.

Years 8 and 10 RE Tests Results 2022

The results of the Years 8 and 10 RE Tests have been delayed. The College has been informed that they should be available at the beginning of the school year 2023.

End of Year Prayer Service

On Tuesday, we gathered as a College community to mark the end of the College year. Led by the student leaders – Bianca, Ava, Claudia, Daniella, Isabelle, Olivia, Katelyn and Madison – we celebrated the season of Advent; a season of hope.  We gathered together in faith even though we were distanced throughout the College. The Prayer Service was a time for community prayer and personal reflection where we also acknowledged and thanked the staff members leaving the College.

I share with you the Opening Prayer of the service:

God our Father, our life is blessed with many good gifts. Make us truly thankful for the gifts of our sisters at the College, for the gift of those who guide us and help us to grow to be women of courage, especially the teachers in our school. May we be your presence in the world in how we relate to others, empowered in all that we say and do. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.

SUPPORT

As we move into the holiday period we want to make you aware of the support that is available to your daughter when she is not at school. Changes to routine can be challenging and your daughter may experience times when she feels a range of uncomfortable emotions such as sadness, stress, or isolated. Feelings come and feelings go. During the holidays we encourage you to check in with her if you notice any concerns or changes in behaviours or functioning. It can be helpful to let her know that you are available to speak with. You may also like to encourage them to stay connected with friends, look after their physical health and engage in the activities that they enjoy. If you identify that she may benefit from chatting with someone, we encourage you to make them aware and support them to access support services. This may be engaging with your local headspace centre, GP or access online or telephone support through eheadspace (1800 650 890) or kidshelpline (1800 55 1800). Please note that you can also call these numbers to help guide your support, alongside parentline (1300 1300 52).

Apps and websites for support:
  • My Compass https://www.mycompass.org.au/ This is a resource created by Black Dog which creates personalised support for mental health. This is focused on providing psychoeducation and skill development. This website can be used by staff and students.
  • Mood Gym https://moodgym.com.au/ An online resource that can help support and manage symptoms of mental health challenges.
  • eheadspace https://headspace.org.au/eheadspace/, 1800 650 890 Online access to a mental health clinician via telephone or webchat. It can be encouraged that students create an account with eheadspace, so that if they have to use this when distressed this is not a barrier for use. Parents can speak with a clinician for help supporting a young person.

Christmas Blessings

In my last lesson with my Year 8 Religious Education class, we explored some colouring in the nativity images, questioned them, and examined them in light of the Nativity stories in the Gospels. It was interesting to find a much deeper story in the Gospel accounts. This video gives you an insight into the lesson.

Sony Marist Children’s Holiday Camp

From Tuesday 6 to Saturday 10 of December, thirteen Year 11 students from Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich volunteered to participate in the Sony Marist Children’s Holiday Camp (SMCHC). Alongside students from St Joseph’s College and Loreto Normanhurst who alike, participated and gave up their time to take care of children with disabilities. This program gives parents and caregivers a much-needed respite, whilst also offering our special guests an unforgettable holiday.

The student companions looked after the children around the clock for four days, feeding, bathing, entertaining and attending to all of their needs. The companions stopped at nothing to provide their perpetual care, ensuring that each special guest enjoyed their holiday. Over the course of the program, the children enjoyed activities such as swimming, movie night, a magic show, dance classes, a carnival and a bouncy castle. To wrap it up, a Christmas party with the children’s families and a special visit from Santa. There were many restless nights for some, waking up in the morning with three hours of sleep or having to skip meals to attend to the guest’s needs. It was exhausting but rewarding. It provided me with an eye-opening experience into the lives of families with children who may require more care and attention than others. Ultimately, it changed the way I see the world.

On behalf of the volunteers, we would like to thank the staff who helped supervise to make this camp possible:

  • Leonie Clarke
  • Angus Bray
  • Jen Mathews
  • Karin Anthony
  • Josh Allen
  • Maria Del Moro
  • Matthew Iskander; and
  • Jenny Vu

For next year’s group presented with this opportunity, I would highly recommend volunteering to help out someone in need as it is incredibly enriching and will change your outlook on life.

Amelia Latham, Year 11 Student

Year 7 Geography

Year 7 Geography students have been finishing their first year of Geography by conducting fieldwork around the College. This gives students the opportunity to investigate the physical and human environment around them, and to participate in the practical application of Geography. Students tested the pH of water and soils around the boat shed and interpreted this data to understand how acidity and alkalinity affect the life forms that grow in those environments. They also tested the temperature of the water, conducted a microplastics survey, and practiced their mathematical skills by drawing the boat shed to scale. Students loved the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful surroundings whilst also utilising geographical skills to better understand the relationship between the physical and human world.

SCS Sport Report

Junior Oztag Report

The Junior Oztag team successfully made it to the grand final for their conference with then an unfortunate loss against Domremy College in extra time. The students played to the best of their abilities until that final siren. The team worked extremely hard throughout the whole season and developed new skills along the way. Having only 2 losses in the whole season the team kept their head up, and worked cohesively to get to the grand finals. With a mix of skills from both the year 7 and 8 students the team had a very successful experience and should be extremely proud of the achievements they accomplished.

Intermediate Oztag Report

The Intermediate Oztag Team successfully competed in their conference by taking home Gold against Bethlehem College and dominating the rest of the Competition. MSCW then compete at the Sydney Catholic Schools Oztag Championships. Unfortunately, the team was unsuccessful in the semi-finals against OLSH Kensington, therefore they were unable to progress to the grand finals in the Championships. Overall, the Intermediate Oztag Team placed 3rd in all of Sydney Catholic Schools, beating Mount St Joseph, Milperra. Throughout this season, the players have worked extremely hard by developing new skills both on and off the field. This resulted in a great improvement in personal growth and creating everlasting friendships as athletes enjoyed the rewarding experience. All players should be proud of their achievements and effort applied. The team’s talent and ambitions are already planning to strive for a Gold in the Sydney Catholic School Championships next year.

Senior Oztag Report

The Senior Oztag Team consisted of talented students from Years 9-11 who worked together in dominating the SCS competition. MSCW won every game except one whilst building their team game play and forming lasting friendships to make it to the semi and grand final. MSCW took a fantastic win over Casimir to progress into the final round against Bethlehem. Unfortunately, MSCW lost but they continued to show determination and enthusiasm right until the final whistle was blown, making sure to never give up. It was evident that the Senior Oztag team had great fun throughout the season and could not be happier with placing second in their SCS conference.

Junior Volleyball Report

The Junior Volleyball team came together as a team, and all worked together to improve individual abilities as well as the ability to work well together as a team. No matter the score or outcome everyone was encouraging towards each other to do their best. Despite the good season the Junior Volleyball team was unable to advance to the finals, but as a team along this journey. A great term of teamwork and camaraderie.

Intermediate Volleyball Report

The intermediate Volleyball team successfully made it through to the semi finals, playing to our best ability, yet unfortunately not progressing to grand finals. Throughout this journey, we have collectively developed our individual skills and learnt to collaborate cohesively as a team. It is evident that we have grown together throughout the season and it was a pleasure celebrating our personal victories together. It was apparent that the Marist spirit helped us persevere throughout the games and we look forward to the next season!

Senior Volleyball Report

The Senior Team competed against Bethlehem College, Rosebank College. Casimir Catholic College and Holy Spirit Catholic College during the regular season. MSCW played to their highest ability and were able to come away learning a lot more about the game than anticipated! Even though the team was unsuccessful in winning an overall game, it was a great experience of the competitiveness and teamwork that is a major part of the sport. It was a great pleasure for the senior team to play volleyball this term!

Junior Cricket Report

The Junior Cricket Team had an amazing season, winning 6 out of the 7 matches during the regular season. The team worked well together with cheers of support and encouragement heard from beyond the sidelines. The team scored over 40+ runs every game, which is quite impressive, considering the 7 over innings. The MSCW team played every single game to their highest ability and always made an outstanding effort in all areas of the game. After qualifying for the semi finals, the Junior Cricket team played Brigidine’s A team. They won the game leaving their opponents empty handed. The team then played a home game against Marist Penshurst in the grand final. They won with 70+ runs after Penshurst scored 30. As this was the first season of the competition that the Junior Cricket team participated in, Marist Sisters will officially be the first winners of this event!

National Cheerleading Report

Congratulations to Sarah Reynolds (Year 8 Student) on her recent success at the National Cheerleading Championships on the Gold Coast. She competed with her team and placed 1st to be titled undefeated National Champions. Sarah competed against teams from all across Australia and ended up with a great Nationals win. Overall it was an amazing competition with results that represented lots of hard work and training.

Awesome effort!

Badminton Report

Congratulations to the MSCW Badminton teams who participated in the recent Badminton Championship held at Sydney Olympic Park.

MSCW competed against Schools from all over the diocese of Sydney, including Bethlehem, Rosebank College, Holy Spirit, Trinity, Bethany, Southern Cross and Bethlehmem

Congratulations to the Senior team who made it into the semi finals, however they were unfortunately defeated.

Overall it was an honour for MSCW to participate in the first ever badminton championship held by Sydney Catholic Schools.

‘From now on’ – Collaborative Performance

‘From Now On’ – Collaborative Performance

The College Choir, Concert Band, String Ensemble, Year 10 Music, Year 9 Dance and Performing Arts Staff spent Term 4 working towards a performance of  ‘From Now On’ from the movie ‘The Greatest Showman’. The group performed last week at the FORM Showcase Evening with such success that we performed an encore at the end of Gala Day for the entire College. It was truly wonderful to see the success of this collaboration.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved in this project!

Concert Band and Stage Band

Concert Band and Stage Band
The Concert Band performed Circus Marchimus (the piece that won them a Gold at the Australian School Band Festival earlier this year) and Highlights from How To Train your Dragon at the FORM Showcase Evening. They also performed as part of the collaborative ‘From Now On’ ensemble. Earlier this week, the band played at ‘Carols on the Plaza’ for the College during lunchtime.

The Stage Band, who had been quietly rehearsing throughout the year had their first performance of 2022 opening the annual Mini Maestros event for our local primary schools. A week later, the band presented Chameleon, Rock Around The Clock and All I Want For Christmas at the FORM Showcase Evening. And finally an encore of All I Want For Christmas was a hit, closing the Carols on the Plaza event.

2022 was such a wonderful year for both groups and we are excited to present many new songs in the new year.

Clothing Pool News

The Marist Sisters College Clothing Pool has now ceased trading for 2022. Clothing Pool orders can be placed with Flexischools during the school holiday period and will be available for collection on Tuesday afternoon 31 January 2023.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the college community for supporting the Clothing Pool and to wish you a safe and happy Christmas.
