Staff Spirituality Day

On Monday all staff travelled to the L’Hermitage, the Marist Retreat Centre in Mittagong for our annual Spirituality Day. The Day was facilitated by Br Tony Leon, Marist Brother and Paul Harris, from the Marist Missions Team. In the autumn-fresh and picturesque hills of the Southern Highlands, we adopted the theme “Breathe” as our inspiration.

The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life. – Job 33:3-4

God’s Spirit breathes life into all of creation, and it is that breath that provides life to all living things. The Christian life is one powered by the breath of God, transforming and calling us to be people who participate in the mission of Jesus: a mission that leads us out of fear and introspection to a renewed realisation of the importance of unity and human fraternity. As we live each day, the Holy Spirit continuously empowers us, breathing the glory and goodness of God into our every moment.

I share the photos below of staff engaging in this significant day.

Marist Girls Support St Anthony’s Marsfield to Celebrate 200 Years of Catholic Education

Last Friday two of our Marist girls, Jacqueline Lee and Jessica Crees, returned to their Primary School, St Anthony’s Marsfield to be part of the school’s liturgy to celebrate 200 years of Catholic Education. This occasion reminds us of the wonderful opportunities that our students experience in our Catholic schools and the pathways of Primary to Secondary in Sydney Catholic Schools.

College Co-Captains attend Student Luncheon

This week, we were honoured to attend an Annual Student Leader’s Lunch held by North Sydney Member of Parliament, Trent Zimmerman. We were accompanied by fellow leaders from schools within the North Sydney Electoral Division, where discussions were driven in the direction of current contemporary issues. These included Indigenous Acknowledgement and Land Rights, refugee immigration and detention centres, Australia’s action to combat climate change, equality in the workplace, schools and society, and the importance of consent.

We heard the perspectives and actions of the Australian Federal Parliament through Mr Zimmerman, as well as our own peers in relation to these topics, providing us with a critical insight into the current state of the world and our place in it. The necessity for education, conversation and action is further emerging as a priority for us as Co-Captains, and going forward, we plan to use this to drive our actions and initiatives at the College.

Jessica Challenger and Emma Serrao, College Co-Captains

As a Marist family, at Easter we recognise the image of Mary kneeling at the foot of the cross. We see the suffering and sacrifice she endures as a mother. Through the unconditional love of her son, we are offered much HOPE at Easter.

I wish a Happy Easter to you and your families.

From the Assistant Principal

The last couple of weeks of Term 1 have been very busy. Last week we engaged in our Principal’s Assembly, which brought an opportunity to recognise our Year 10 Amica leaders, and our Year 12 Student Leaders discussed with their fellow Sisters Bullying No Way initiatives, having pride in their surrounding school environment and uniform as well as their Easter initiative. Our assemblies also provide students an opportunity to give witness to the sharing of their gifts, we were very fortunate that Tiana Palandjian (Year 12), Annabel Femia (Year 11) and Jessica Smith (Year 9) demonstrated their musical talents with the community.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the students for their commitment to their learning and their involvement in the range of opportunities offered in Term 1 that allowed them to demonstrate their gifts and talents. I wish all students and staff very restful break during the holiday period.

Year 7 and 8 Parent/Student Dr Prue Salter Tools for Success Evening

Last week Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Educational Services (www.enhanced-learning.net) ran a study skills evening with Year 7 and 8  parents and students.  The evening helped families assess what changes could be made to help students work towards achieving their personal best in an efficient and effective way. Students examined their home study environment, the way they organise and manage their resources, how to work effectively at home and deal with distractions, how to manage the workload in high school, and the steps to studying in high school: making study notes, learning the notes by testing yourself and doing as much practise as possible.Parents are encouraged to review the handout from the session with students and discuss the main areas identified where changes need to be made.

Year 11 Dr Prue Salter

Last week Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Educational Services ran a study skills session with Year 11.  The session focused on helping students identify changes and improvements they could make to their approach to their studies in order to maximise their results in their final years of school. The main areas covered with Year 11 were working effectively in the evenings and dealing with distractions, managing time efficiently, planning for assessments, making brain-friendly study notes on a regular basis and using a wide variety of active study techniques to suit individual learning styles.

Study skills tip for April – Looking ahead to next term

Are you riding a rollercoaster at school? Rollercoaster study is where you stay up late doing last minute assignments, then you take it easy for a while and do very little, then panic again when something is due and have to spend huge amounts of time at the end completing the work.  If you plan ahead and are prepared, you will find school much less stressful and more rewarding.

Here are the top tips for thinking ahead:
  1. STUDY NOTES: If you know that you have a test at the end of each topic or examinations approaching, then on the nights you do not have much homework start working on your study notes and summaries. File them in folders at home so they are ready to go when you need them.
  2. ASSIGNMENTS: Always start the assignment the day it is given to you, even if it is just a little bit. Make sure you understand the requirements and if you don’t ask your teacher straight away the next day. Brainstorm the steps the first night and do a rough plan of when you will do each step.
  3. ASK FOR HELP EARLY: There is nothing more frustrating than a student who says ‘I haven’t understood anything we did in the last 3 weeks’. Ask for help as soon as you have a problem. Keep a list of questions for your teacher on a post-it in your textbook or sticky notes on your computer or a list in your phone. Don’t let problems or issues build up, ask for help early and often.
  4. THINK ABOUT WHO YOU SIT NEXT TO: Choose wisely who you will sit with in class. This can make a world of difference to your results. If you sit with someone where it is a productive relationship, you encourage and help each other and stay on task in the classroom. You will understand your work better and have less to do at home.
  5. CONSIDER YOUR WEEK: Plan ahead for busy times. If you know you have nights where you can’t do much work or a busy weekend, plan ahead and get things done early. Always look ahead for possible times where you could be caught short of time and make plans to avoid problems.

COMPASS Student Card

It is a College expectation that all students have their COMPASS student ID card with them everyday. The card is used in particular for students to tap in and out of the College for late arrival or early departure. I ask for the support of parents in ensuring that your daughter/s have this with them everyday.  If students have misplaced or lost their student ID card it is a requirement that the card is replaced. Please see below for how to order a new card online.

Easter is central to our Christian faith. We are “Easter people”. Jesus showed us that by surrendering to God’s will, new life can come from suffering and death. With the easing of restrictions, I encourage all to check the Liturgies available in Parishes for Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday/Easter Sunday.

Holy Week Prayer Service

Thank you to Orlaith, Orla, Arielle, Bianca, Olivia and Claire, House Liturgy Captains, Charlotte and Mia, Social Justice Captains and Alissa, Bianca, Mia, Valeria and Ava – Year 7 – for the prayerful presentation of the Way of the Cross at the Holy Week Prayer Service. MSCW Merit System

The College is committed to supporting each student to help find their compass for Life through the rich opportunities that we provide here at Marist Sisters’ College, Woolwich. At the commencement of Term 2, the College will be introducing a Merit System, which is intended support the development of each students’ compass for Life and affirm extraordinary effort in the areas of:

  • positive behaviour
  • individual learning success
  • co-curricular contributions
  • service to others, and
  • leadership within our College life community.

A parent letter will be issued via COMPASS when Term 2 commences that explain the four tiers and process behind the cumulative Merit system.

Winter Uniform Term 2

As we prepare for the transition into the College Winter Uniform, please be aware that this is effective as of the first day back of Term 2 – Tuesday 20 April. It is important that we continue to set high expectations in how our students represent themselves as ambassadors of the College in the community and that all parents and students are fully aware of the College’s policy

UNIFORM BLITZ

Times have been scheduled in Term 2 during different points of the calendar week/day and not during Tutor Group time.

The consequence will be an immediate after school detention and NOT a lunchtime detention.

WINTER UNIFORM REMINDERs

  • Navy stockings only.
  • Jumpers are only to be worn underneath the blazer .
  • All kilts are to be to the knee. Please check hem lengths during the holidays and before school commences as students have most probably grown since last year.
  • Year 12 jerseys are NOT to be worn off campus, or to and from College, even with blazers.  NB – Jerseys are only to be worn on College grounds.
  • All excessive jewellery, acrylic & painted nails, eyelash extensions, brightly coloured hair are to be removed before the commencement Term 2 as this will result in an immediate infringement.

#mscwsisters raising an awareness

The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) is Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative.

Our Student Leaders in Week 9 planned a week of educational learnings in Tutor groups, along with organised lunchtime opportunities for all to engage in some fun activities with their peers. We recognise the importance of fostering respectful relationships between all members of our community between students and staff to create a positive school climate that accepts each individual for their gifts and unique personalities. It was a wonderful week of cross connections amongst all year groups.

Functional Neurological Disorder Awareness Day – 25 March 2021

Another important awareness week that requires greater recognition within our community is Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). One of our brave students in Year 8 was interested in sharing her experience. During this journey, she has continued to develop a positive and highly optimistic outlook combined with a ferociously determined attitude.

Click here to see a clip that has been created to explain ‘what is FND?’ and best how to support someone in need.

We pride ourselves on being ‘sisters for Life’ and always looking at how best to reach out, offer social and emotional support as well as exercise compassion and understanding.

Project Compassion

As we enter Holy Week, we continue to reflect on the lives of people vulnerable to extreme poverty and injustice and how we can respond through supporting Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion appeal.

Let us take time to remember the life and teachings of Saint Oscar Romero. His many lessons include: live a simple life, commit to bringing peace to the world, speak the truth and of course aspire not to have more, but to be more.

Thank you for supporting Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion Campaign. Your generosity will work for the freedom of those living in poverty, challenge unjust structures, and empower people to work for a sustainable way of life.

A very special thank you to Mrs Kathryn Della Vedova, whose family donated over 75 jars of their homemade honey to be sold, with proceeds going to Project Compassion.

Social Justice Week

As a community we often take time to focus on our Catholic faith and how we can be advocates for goodness in the world. In this spirit, the Marists in Action group have organised to have a Social Justice Week, Term 2, Week 1.

Upon returning from the holidays, this will be an opportunity for students to learn more about ethical issues in our world. This year’s focus is how to be a ‘Conscious Consumer’ and choose products that are ethically sourced. Each lunchtime during the week, there will be activities students can take part in!

Marists in Action Logo Competition

This term, Marists in Action ran a competition to design a logo that will represent the group. Well done to all students who entered the competition, the designs were all wonderful representations of our Catholic faith and Marist charism. Congratulations to Jade Evans and Emma Edmonds in Year 11 for their winning submission.

From the College Counsellor

As the school term draws to a close, it is important for us to reflect on how hard many of the girls have worked during the term and the importance of enjoying a break from school work and to recharge during the school holidays. School holidays can also be a time to reconnect with family and friends, and I encourage the girls to do just that!

I cannot stress enough how important it is for the girls to find a balance between school work, study, extracurriculars and down time. Research shows that adolescent development thrives when sleep, playtime, downtime and family time are regularly in a teens schedule (Franz 2019 www.ascd.org).

As parents, we can support our young person during the term by helping them schedule their time to ensure that sleep, family time, study and down time can be regularly achieved. This can support girls to feel motivated and prevents feelings of burn out and fatigue.

If your daughter is needing mental health support over the holiday period, I have listed below some emergency contacts and supports:

Lifeline 13 11 14

Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800

Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636

Headspace 1800 650 890

I hope the holidays are relaxing and enjoyable and I look forward to the next term ahead.

If you wish to discuss the above or have any concerns about your young person please feel free to contact the College Counsellor, Monica Rogenmoser via monica.rogenmoser@syd.catholic.edu.au or ph: 0435 659 694 (during school hours)

Chanel House News

Chanel Week

Term 2, Week 2(26-30 April)

Chanel House is named after the Marist missionary St Peter Chanel, who joined the Society of Mary after being ordained. St Peter Chanel travelled to the Pacific Islands in 1830 to spread the Good News and became the first Marist martyr in 1841.

During Chanel Week we will be celebrating the values, life and work of St Peter Chanel. Chanel House would like to invite everyone in the College to join us in ‘reaching outwards and upwards’ and fundraise for the Marist Missions.

Throughout the week there will be activities, quizzes and prizes during homeroom, recess and lunch. Thank you in advance for your support, enthusiasm and participation!

Open Water Polo Report

The Water polo season started off rough, MSCW conceding 2 losses in the first rounds against older and more experienced teams. It went up from here winning more games and working together as a united team. We made it into the semifinals finishing third overall. We played Domremy and despite losing, we held their heads up high and relished the season.

The defence (Elsie, Amelia, Zara) stopped many goals and fully supported the rest of the team. Midfielders, (Victoria, Caragh, Sheridan, Tamara) moved the ball around effectively leading to numerous goals. This resulted in the attackers, (Sofia and Sienna) smashing the ball into the back of the net. Isabel, although new to the sport quickly picked up some excellent goal keeping skills. The year 8’s (Amy, Angela) also learnt new skills and are looking forward to the Junior competition in Term 4. New friends were made and thanks to the super coach, Ms Kemp, the girls thoroughly enjoyed their season.

Touch Football Results

Congratulations to our open team who finished first in the MCCS Competition.

They will play McAuley in the semi final this Thursday.

Volleyball Results

Congratulations to both our junior and senior teams on making the Volleyball semi-finals. The Junior and Senior teams will both play Trinity in the semi-finals.
