Year 9 Commerce – Market Day

As part of the Year 9 Commerce topic “Running A Business”, Year 9 students completed Market Day on Friday of week 7. Students have been working in groups this term to plan a small business that would sell food and drink products at recess and lunch. This comprehensive simulation of running a business involves getting investment money to fund their business, conducting market research with their target markets, designing appealing products and branding, preparing all food and drinks, and running the business on the day.

Students embraced the challenges that the rain brought, and found the experience both very fun and very challenging. There were nine groups over three Commerce classes, who each established unique and creative brands and used this experience to share their gifts and demonstrate their leadership skills.

In total, the groups made $2,942 in profit on the day. The winning group, “Night In”, got to decide which charity it would be donated to, and selected Mary’s House, a women’s and children’s refuge in North Sydney that provides emergency accommodation and support to women and children in the Northern Sydney area.
