From the Principal – Ms Pussich

Father’s Day Prayer

God our Father,
In your wisdom and love you made all things.

Bless those men who have the responsibility of parenting.
Bless them and give them wisdom as they love, nurture and guide their children.

Bless those fathers who are parenting alone, due to the loss of a spouse to death or due to separation or divorce.
Strengthen them by your love that they may be the loving caring persons they are meant to be.

Bless those fathers who are deceased. We pray that they are now in your loving arms.

Grant this through Christ our Lord
Amen

On Wednesday, 31st August we celebrated Father’s Day with a special Mass and Breakfast. It was a beautiful morning for the dad’s who came along with their daughters. Thank you to Fr Andrew for celebrating the Mass.

JJAMM Week

During Week 5 of this term, 15th August to 19th August, the College enjoyed our annual JJAMM Week (JJAMM – Joseph, Julian and Mary MacKillop). The week is an opportunity to celebrate our Josephite charism and the legacy of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Our students and staff celebrated JJAMM Week through prayer, service, fundraising and fun activities. Please enjoy the JJAMM articles and photos contained in this newsletter.

JJAMM Week 2022

J for St Joseph Day – Hands Of Support

J

On Monday 15th August, we focussed on St Joseph. St Joseph was a refugee who sought asylum in a foreign land when the life of Jesus threatened. Joseph took upon himself to journey to a new land so that he and his family may have life and live in peace without violence.

Some of our families, too, have made journeys to a foreign land for a better life.

We focused on Refugees & Asylum Seekers, where the community learned more about the road travelled by refugees to seek a safe place through ‘Hands in Support’ display and sharing of stories and developed a Storyboard Display for each House.

J is for Julian Tenison-Woods

J

On Tuesday 16th August, we focussed on Julian Tenison-Woods. Julian was a great supporter of Mary MacKillop, co-founding the Sisters of St Joseph. Julian was awarded the Clarke medal for ‘distinguished service to science’ and had a passion for the physical world and nature. We began the day with a sustainability quiz in homeroom.

We held a very successful plant sale to support our environmental initiatives and the Henderson recycling program which supports Mary MacKillop Today.

A for A Community Day

A

On Wednesday 17th August, we focused on our community and helping others. The mufti day saw students wear jerseys and make a donation in support of the Catholic Education Foundation.

At lunch time we had the Teachers versus Students School of Origin Touch Footy Match. The teachers were victorious winning 6 tries to 1.

M is for Mary Day, See a Need and Do Something About It

M

Mary MacKillop believed in God’s providence, living a life as a model for others in their own faith journey. She longed to provide education for children who were in need and worked to provide them a better future. Mary was able to provide schooling for students from underprivileged communities through the works of the Sisters of St Joseph.

On Thursday 18th August, Mary Day, we encouraged students to “see a need and do something about it” and to dare to be like Mary. Students were provided with a quote and a ‘do something’ card. Throughout the day they reflected on their card and aimed to see needs in our community and do something about it.

We also celebrated Mary Day with a Bake sale. All funds will go to support MMCC students in the Need Support Fund (e.g Breakfast Club).

M is for Mary MacKillop Day

M

On Friday 19th August, we celebrated our College Feast Day – Mary MacKillop Day.

Mary MacKillop Day brings the whole community together to reflect on our College Patron St Mary of the Cross MacKillop through celebrating the Eucharist, enjoying lunch on the oval, music and Talent Quest.

Year 12 Events Timeline & Details

STEM – Out of this World

In a place far, far away, students from the STEM team and Year 10 Design and Technology have been working towards entries for the Universal Robotics Challenge 2022. Through the hard work and persistence of STEM teachers and students, Mary MacKillop Catholic College was fortunate to receive a government grant for Artec robots, as a result we were able to enter the world wide robotics challenge organised by EduTech Australia.

Students were given access to robotics kits and resources that enabled them to explore problem solving using coding and innovative robot design. The brief was to develop a robot that improved road safety – a topic that all students were keen to explore and involve themselves in, creating an innovative robotic solution. The students made a valiant attempt, in the short time they had, to produce a life saving robotic mechanism that would compete with entries from Japan, Portugal, New Zealand and other countries around the world.

Results will be published late October and we look forward to liaising with the teams from overseas. It seems that the world has no limits for our STEM students.

Year 9 Commerce – Running a Business

Year 9 Commerce had a magnificent experience running a business. Two businesses, DYO-C and Lips N Lashes are included here:

DYO-Cupcakes

Our team, DYO-C (Design Your Own – Cupcakes), came to the decision to sell cupcakes at Mary MacKillop Catholic College, hence the company name. We decided to sell the cupcakes for $4.00 each, with the choice of icing (strawberry, chocolate or vanilla) and toppings, (Oreos, M&Ms or sprinkles). Our team learned the challenges and tasks of running a business and the hard work necessary for the company to succeed, for example, communication between the team, customer management, leadership and more.

Our business was successful as we sold all our cupcakes and our knowledge of running a business expanded. Everyone enjoyed their time and learned the basic steps in starting a business, hopeful assisting them in the future.

Lips N Lashes

Our team, Lips N Lashes, sold a beauty pack which included fake lashes, lip glosses, spoolies, eyelash curlers, lollipops and sweet heart lollies. We made 67 packs and we sold each pack for $10. We decided to sell in front of the Chapel as it gave us an advantage being the first business the students saw.

This was a very successful business venture as we sold out all packs in under 5 minutes when we were given 40 minutes to sell and we raised $300 for charity.

City Link Mentor Program

On Friday 29th July, students from Sydney Catholic Schools were invited to a City Link Mentor Program launch function. The launch function was at the Macquarie Group Limited building. Aseeter Saleem, Delya Mayoma, Maryam Baji, Onella Al-Simaani, Bardeen Rafoka and Nhu Trinh attended.

The students were invited to the City Link Mentor function to have an introduction to the program. The City Link Mentor Program is a Catholic based educational foundation mentor program which strives to enhance the knowledge and skills within a student. The program allows students to meet with significant individuals (who have achieved much during their careers) and learn based on their experiences. This gives students guidance with their futures.

MMCC students had the opportunity to hear Mr Tony Farley, Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools, and Mr Nicholas Moore speak about resilience in their school life. They encourage students to never be afraid to ask questions, and to always stay curious about life.

Uniform Shop Moving

As mentioned in a previous newsletter, we are moving the Uniform Shop offsite so that parents have greater access to the shop. Currently the Uniform Shop is only open every Wednesday and Thursday from 8am until 9.30am. By moving our Uniform Shop to the Cowan and Lewis retail outlet at 156 Main Street, Blacktown, parents will have access 5 1/2 days per week. Normal trading hours as well as extended trading hours in January for the Blacktown retail outlet are included in this newsletter.

For the convenience of parents, orders can be done online with free delivery to the school on Wednesdays and Fridays. Alternatively orders can be picked up at the Blacktown retail shop or delivered to homes via Australia Post with a $15 delivery fee. Exchanges or refunds simply require parents to fill in an online form and leave the goods at the College Office. The exchange would then be delivered to school for collection. We hope to still sell a few items, such as the grey stockings, through the College Office.

There have been some changes to prices. The price schedule is included in this newsletter. Most items are $3 to $5 increase except the Blazer, $10. There has not been a price increase since 2018.
